This is the first study to report the distribution of urolithin metabotypes (UMs) in Asian people, specifically in the Chinese. As was reported for Europeans and Latin Americans, three UMs were observed, UM-A (54.3%), UM-B (31.4%), and UM-0 (14.3%), in 35 healthy Chinese youth. The richness and diversity of gut microbiota were lower in UM-0 than in UM-A and UM-B at the genus level. Gordonibacter in UM-A and UM-B was significantly higher than that in UM-0. The Akkermansia was not found in UM-0. The correlation analysis between the type and content of urolithins and the gut microbiota at the genus level showed that 27 genera were significantly positively correlated with urolithin A and 20 genera were significantly positively associated with isourolithin A and urolithin B. In addition, different KEGG pathways such as TCA cycle, energy metabolism, and some disease were found between the gut microbiome of the three UMs. Further research is needed to explore the mechanisms of metabotypes and the differential health benefits or illness predisposition of the three UMs.

Driven by economic development, ideational changes and family planning policies, the Chinese family has experienced significant change over the past several decades. Based on data from the 2018 wave of the China Family Panel Studies, this study analyzes China’s younger generations’ union formation and childbearing behaviors. The results show that although the average age of entry into a first marriage continues to rise, young people generally express a desire to enter into marriage and value the creation of a family. As premarital cohabitation became more prevalent, its determinants change from the “second demographic transition” model to the “pattern of disadvantage” model. The differences between cohabitors and non-cohabitors in premarital conception, premarital childbirth and divorce diminished in the recent cohorts. The findings suggest that the age of childbearing for Chinese women remains relatively early. The implementation of the “universal two-child policy” in 2015 has also encouraged younger women’s childbearing. Among those born in the 1980s, almost half have already given birth to a second child. The ideal number of children has declined across birth cohorts in China, especially for individuals with a higher educational level and urban hukou. In summary, changes in union formation and childbearing among Chinese youth imply that China will be facing a further rise in the first marriage age and a further decline in the fertility rate. However, voluntary singlehood will remain rare, and Chinese youth still value the importance of marriage and childbearing.

Rural youth in China experience numerous challenges during their transition into adulthood. Yet, research on this transition and its relevant influential factors is rare. Through the lens of family systems theory, this study examined the impacts of family dynamics (i.e., interparental and parent-adolescent interactions) in adolescence on the psychological adjustment of youth as they transition into adulthood. Participants were 1330 youth and their mothers in rural Gansu. In 2004, mothers completed questionnaires of interparental and parent-adolescent interactions when youth were adolescents (Mage = 15.03, SD = 1.15). In 2009, youth completed questionnaires of depression and self-esteem when they were emerging adults (Mage = 20.03, SD = 1.15). Results of structural equation modelling suggested that while interparental interactions in adolescence were not associated with the psychological adjustment of youth in emerging adulthood, positive parent-adolescent interactions in adolescence predicted better psychological adjustment of youth in emerging adulthood. Furthermore, mediation analysis showed that although interparental interactions did not directly affect the psychological adjustment of youth, they were positively associated with parent-adolescent interactions, which in turn contributed to the psychological adjustment of youth. The results reveal an enduring influence of family dynamics on psychological adjustment among rural Chinese youth during the transition into adulthood.

Russia-China relations are a major research focus in international relations, yet few studies have so far addressed the issue of how the two nations view each other. This study seeks to contribute to closing this gap by focusing on how college-age millennials perceive the counterpart country. We have selected students who have had experience studying abroad, namely Chinese students who have studied in Russia and Russian students who have studied in China. Our findings are based on the analysis of 150 in-depth qualitative narrative interviews conducted with Chinese and Russian students (75 in each group). The study demonstrates that ethnocentric stereotypes prevail and both groups engage in cultural ‘othering’. Meanwhile, students from both countries perceive Russian President Vladimir Putin as a central determining factor in shaping Russia-China relations.

The aim of this study was to explore Chinese adolescent’s social and moral transgressions and strategies for self-correction. For this study, following protocols that have been approved by an Institutional Review Board, 61 Chinese adolescents living in Guangzhou—distributed across three age groups: 10- to 11-year-olds ( N = 21, Mage = 11.03 years, SD = 0.43 years), 12- to 13-year-olds ( N = 20, Mage = 12.92 years, SD = 0.35 years), and 15- to 16-year-olds ( N = 20, Mage = 16.15 years, SD = 0.30 years)—participated in one-on-one semi-structured interviews. The study employed a deductive analytical approach based on prior social domain research on children’s and adolescents’ transgressions and strategies for self-correction. This study found that Chinese youth reported conventional transgression events more frequently than any other domain. Moreover, many of adolescents’ transgressions involved academic considerations, suggesting that how adolescents’ time is organized and the social expectations for adolescent behavior influence the types of transgressions and justifications adolescents will make. Furthermore, participants reported developing self-correcting strategies following 73.6% of events, while 74.5% of strategies were reported to be developed by the adolescents themselves. Therefore, the findings suggest that there is room for adults to collaborate with adolescents in developing strategies to prevent future misbehavior and to encourage youth to not only be “good” or “moral” but also to be and do better.

Purpose To adapt an evidence-based coping skills training program to the cultural context and healthcare system for youth with T1D in China, and to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of the modified program. Design and methods A multiphase process was used based on a heuristic framework for program modification. This included information gathering, preliminary adaptation, and feasibility evaluation. Results In Stage 1, the coping skills training protocol was translated and evaluated for relevance by the stakeholders (youth diagnosed with T1D, parents, and healthcare providers). Recommendations for revisions and culturally relevant scenarios were identified. In Stage 2, the program was adapted for youth with a wider age range. Scenarios and logistics of the program were changed, and a session on blood glucose management was added to enhance cultural relevance. In Stage 3, the feasibility of the modified program was evaluated with 15 youth participants diagnosed with T1D (mean age: 13.88 years). Problem-solving coping and the self-efficacy of the youth improved over time (p Practice implications The CST-China program has the potential to provide Chinese youth with T1D an interactive and engaging program to improve health outcomes. The adaptation process of a CST program can provide a reference for pediatric nurses to develop programs which are culturally relevant, acceptable to stakeholders, and aligned with the healthcare system in China. Conclusions A coping skills training program was systematically adapted and aligned to the healthcare system in China, with evidence of feasibility and acceptability in Chinese youth with T1D.

The goal of the present study was to examine the moderating effect of emotion regulation in the longitudinal relations between rejection sensitivity and indices of adjustment among Chinese children. Participants were N = 590 children (Mage= 11.25 years, SD = 1.33) attending public elementary and middle schools in Shanghai, P.R. China. Measures of anxious rejection sensitivity and socio-emotional functioning were collected via self-reports and peer nominations. Among the results, rejection sensitivity significantly predicted higher levels of later internalizing problems. Moreover, emotion regulation significantly moderated (i.e. buffering effect) the relations between rejection sensitivity and later peer and emotional difficulties. The current findings suggest that rejection sensitivity poses developmental risk over time, but emotion regulation may serve as a protective factor for Chinese youth. Results are discussed in terms of the implications of rejection sensitivity and emotion regulation in Chinese culture.

Highlights • The proportion of school-aged children and adolescents in China who engage in recommended levels of physical activity (PA), in or outside of school time, has been declining for decades. • Current PA promotion policies for Chinese schools are primarily “stand-alone” approaches and their efficacy appears limited. • Re-evaluating the problem from a comprehensive social-ecological perspective within a public health model offers greater potential for developing effective and culturally appropriate interventions to increase PA among Chinese youth. • If the goals of Healthy China 2030, including the prevention of the early onset of chronic diseases among Chinese children and adolescents, are to be met by reversing the trend of declining PA, careful consideration of this new paradigm is imperative.

Singles’ Day, or 11 November, was initially conceived as a way to celebrate singlehood among Chinese youth. Since 2009, the e-commerce giant Alibaba has transformed Singles’ Day into the world’s largest online shopping day, using its discursive power to define the day as overtly commercial. To analyse emerging consumerist discourses around Singles’ Day, we considered news coverage alongside posts on Sina Weibo. Although the Singles’ Day bent towards consumerism occurred over time, in concert with demographic and political changes within China, our research shows that consumerist understandings of Singles’ Day emerged from a nascent cultural logic that celebrated togetherness through consumption.

The growing dynamics of cooperation between Russia and China in various spheres of economic activity generate the need for training bilingual specialists. Russia has a significant educational potential, which includes a wide range of specialties and professions, it is an attractive country of study for students from China. The article based on in-depth interviews and analysis of statistical data, is aimed at identifying some of problematic issues regarding education of Chinese students in Russia. The research interest is focused on determining the educational and everyday needs of Chinese students, the motivational grounds for choosing a country of study, the prospects for internalization in the labor market and self-realization after qualification. The main factors that motivate the Chinese youth to receive education in Russia are: the attractiveness of the Russian language and culture, and the financial accessibility of Russian education. The results of the research allow also to conclude that the educational potential of Russia in relation to Chinese students in comparison with the countries of North America and Western Europe is realized insufficiently. The authors identified main reasons for such situation: the vague prospects for Chinese graduates of Russian universities in the labor market and the active policy of the Chinese government to return home students who received education abroad.

Previous studies indicated a positive association between physical education (PE) and mathematics achievement (MA). This study explored how PE curriculum implementation relates to MA using data from the China National Assessment of Education Quality (CNAEQ) in 2015, including Mathematics (CNAEQ-MA 2015) as well as Physical EducationHealth (CNAEQ-PEH 2015).This study included 22,619 students (48.7% girls) age 13.96 ± 0.64 yr. from the national sample of Grade 8 students from CNAEQ. During 2015, MA and cardiorespiratory fitness (CF) were assessed. PE curriculum implementation, personal hygiene, eating habits, PE interest, mathematics interest, and self-confidence were collected via a self-report student survey. Personal hygiene and eating habits were combined to create the latent variable, healthy lifestyle (HL). Structural equation modeling was applied to examine the associations. Socioeconomic status, school location, Body Mass Index (BMI), and sex were all controlled.PE curriculum implementation had an indirect, positive association with MA through CF, HL-mathematics interest, and HL-mathematics self-confidence. Together, the model explained 27.8% of the variance in MA.PE curriculum implementation may benefit mathematics education, and this link is mainly through HL, CF, mathematics interest, and self-confidence.

Physical education (PE) in school provides opportunities for physical activity (PA) engagement and reportedly results in improved health-related fitness. This study explored the underlying correlations between PE and activity-related healthy lifestyle practices with current level of cardiorespiratory fitness.A total of 13,138 students age 14 (boys = 7,094, 54.0%) in Grade 8 from the China National Assessment of Educational Quality - Physical EducationHealth 2015 were included in this study. Two independent structural equation modeling (SEM) analyses were conducted to obtained sex-specific results. Data included the results of the 15-m progressive aerobic cardiovascular endurance run (PACER) and questionnaire data regarding PE curriculum implementation, learning and practice, perceived support from PE teachers, PE facilities, PE equipment, activity-related healthy lifestyle practices, habitual physical fitness, appropriate method of physical fitness, and breakfast eating habits. Structural equation modeling was applied to examine the associations between variables, controlling for socioeconomic status, the location of schools, and Body Mass Index.There was a statistically significant relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and activity-related healthy lifestyle practices, which was somewhat positively impacted by skill learning and practice and perceived support from PE teachers. Together, the boy's model explained 21.8% of the variance in cardiorespiratory fitness, whereas the girl's model explained 15.9%.A well-organized PE program is related to students' activity-related healthy lifestyle practices, and consequently provides an improvement to cardiorespiratory fitness.

When China joined the United Nations in 1971, it viewed UN peacekeeping operations (UNPKOs) as an instrument for powerful countries to exploit weaker countries. Today, under Xi Jinping, China contributes the largest number of UN peacekeeping personnel among the five permanent (P5) members of the UN Security Council. This article presents findings from a pilot study based on a survey conducted at two international universities in China in the fall of 2016, regarding how Chinese students perceive China’s UNPKO involvement. A total of 297 Chinese university students participated in this survey. Given that there has been little scholarship on how Chinese citizens view China’s UNPKO spending or involvement, this article aims to contribute to our understanding of this subject.

Background This study investigated the natural development pattern of mindful awareness and its relation with mental health in a sample of Chinese youth. Methods 1,483 students (57.11% boys) from fourth to ninth grade (Mage = 11.18 ± 1.78, Wave 1) participated in the study. Students participated in up to 3 waves of assessment, each spaced approximately 6 months. The data were collected by the Chinese version of the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale-Children (MAAS-C), the Chinese Version of 10-item CES-D Depression Scale (CESD-10), and the Academic Pressure subscale of Inventory of Influencing Factors of Trait Anxiety for Secondary School Students (IIFTAS). Results Cross-sectionally, higher graders scored lower mindful awareness than lower graders. Results of latent growth curve analysis showed a slight decrease, but not at a significant level, of mindful awareness in the longitudinal measurement. Results from the parallel-process model indicated that decreases in mindful awareness significantly predicted children and adolescents' depressive emotions and academic pressure. Limitations As a longitudinal study, the time points were insufficient and all variables were assessed by self-report measures. Conclusion Mindful awareness might be a significant protector for youth when co-developing with mental health problems.

Based on social cognitive theory, we studied the relationship between coaches’ paternalistic leadership (PL) and youth athletes’ organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and the mediation effect of athletes’ trust in coaches, in China. This age-specific research was conducted among more than 2,000 Chinese youth soccer players. Overall, 758 youth soccer players, aged 13–18 years, completed a self-report questionnaire. The results showed that the three dimensions of the coaches’ PL have different relationships with OCB, and the differences were due to differences in athletes’ ages. Additionally, we verified the mediation role of trust. Our research conclusions are of great significance to the study of Chinese youth soccer as in-depth research can provide a deeper and more precise understanding of the relationship between PL and the OCB of Chinese youth soccer players. This study expands the literature on social cognitive theory and sheds light on the relationship between coach leadership and athlete OCB by providing extensive evidence.

The implementation of the reform and opening-up policies within the last four decades have brought China a deeper connection with the whole world. Benefiting from actively integrating itself into economic globalization and the current world order, China has experienced profound social and economic changes, which promote value changes or even shifts of Chinese at the same time. As the most active group in a society, youth is like the barometer of social development, from which we can clearly see value changes in the society. Thus, the study focuses on Chinese youth’s values and explores how socioeconomic development exerts its influence on individuals. The article begins with a literature review of both foreign and domestic research on Chinese youth, from which the research gap—Chinese youth’s values—is pinpointed. It then briefly describes the theoretical background, followed by the methodology and results. Discussion will be given as the final part.

In recent years, STEM education has set off a boom around the world, and many countries have adopted policies and measures to encourage the development of STEM education. In China, many adolescents show their scientific and technological innovations by participating in CASTIC. CASTIC is the most influential science and technology competition in China. It is also an important way to cultivate innovative talents. This paper takes CASTIC in line with the philosophy of STEM education as a research object, systematically discusses the relationship between STEM education and CASTIC, and explores the development of Chinese youth STEM education by analyzing the subject distribution and regional distribution of CASTIC award-winning entries in the past five years, which will provide a new experience for STEM education research.

BACKGROUND BMI and waist circumference (WC) have commonly been used to identify obesity in practice. The aim of the present study was to assess the blood pressure (BP) status among Chinese college students categorized by BMI and WC. METHODS A total of 4226 college students (2107 males and 2119 females) aged 19-22 years included in the study. The WHO BMI cutoffs were used to define underweight, normal weight and overweight. The WC cutoffs (90 cm for man and 80 cm for woman) were used to define central obesity. High BP was defined as SBP/DBP ≥140/90 mmHg. The BP status of subjects within each category across BMI and WC were assessed. RESULTS When subjects were categorized by BMI, overweight males and females had a higher prevalence of high BP than their nonoverweight counterparts. When WC was used to diagnose central obesity, subjects with central obesity had a higher prevalence of high BP than those with normal WC. A positive association between BMI, WC and BP was also observed even in normal-weight subjects, with 'high normal BMI' subgroup (BMI = 23.7-24.9) had a higher BP level and prevalence of high BP than 'low normal BMI' subgroups (BMI = 18.5-19.7 and BMI = 19.8-21.0, P

Objective The aims of the current study were to assess the prevalence of overweight and obesity by four different references and to explore the characteristics of adolescent overweight and obesity in Chinese secondary school students aged 12–18 years. Study design A cross-sectional study was conducted in this study. Methods Using stratified random cluster sampling, 8999 secondary school students were enrolled. The references developed by Must and Dallal and Dietz, the Childhood Obesity Working Group of the International Obesity Task Force, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Group of China Obesity Task Force (GCOTF reference) were used to identify overweight and obese students. Results The prevalence of adolescent overweight and obesity vary substantially based on the four references. The prevalence of adolescent overweight and obesity based on GCOTF reference are 8.4% and 4.1%, respectively, which is significantly lower than the prevalence of overweight and obesity in their peers in 2000 (χ2 = 24.03, P Conclusion The GCOTF reference is more suitable for screening overweight and obesity in Chinese adolescents. The current prevalence rates of adolescent overweight and obesity decreased, and girls made a tremendous contribution to this decreasing trend. Singletons and adolescents in lower school community ladder of subjective socio-economic status may be at higher risk of getting overweight and obesity. More effective strategies with full consideration to the characteristics above should be developed to control and prevent adolescent overweight and obesity.

Physical inactivity is a growing issue in Chinese youth, but parks can facilitate traditional and non-traditional forms of physical activity for little to no cost. Despite this opportunity, very little is known regarding park use among Chinese youth. The purpose of this study was to conduct a cross-sectional observational study of park usage and physical activity of youth in municipal parks in Nanchang, China. Data were collected in June of 2014 in eight parks across Nanchang, Jiangxi a large city in southeast China. Physical activity was measured by a modified version of System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities. Ordered hierarchic generalized linear models were estimated using a logit link function. The influence of the park was estimated using random effects, with fixed effects and park, environmental, and park user characteristics. Youth were most often seen active in the afternoon, on weekends, and during cooler times (≤ 29 °C). Paradoxically, more children were active when air quality was poorer. Older boys were more active than younger boys, but no differences were observed in girls. More children were seen active in unstructured play compared to structured activities. Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) are two common ways to measure obesity. There is a debate, however, about which of these two measures are more closely associated with elevated blood pressure (BP). The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of obesity and whether BMI and WC is better associated with elevated BP in children and adolescents. A representative sample of 8613 Chinese youth aged 7-17 years from seven cities in Northeastern China was selected and measurements of height, weight, WC, BP were taken from 2012 to 2013. The average age of the children was 11.3±2.3years. The prevalence of overweight/obese and abdominal obesity in the subjects was 35% and 44.8%, respectively. We found that both BMI and WC were significantly associated with elevated BP. An increase of 1kgm-2 in BMI was associated with a 1.10 (1.08-1.12, 95% CI) increased risk of an elevated BP diagnosis in boys, and a 1.14 (1.11-1.16, 95% CI) increased risk in girls. Meanwhile, a 1cm increase in WC correlated with a 1.03 (1.02-1.04, 95% CI) and a 1.05 (1.04-1.06, 95% CI) increased risk of higher BP in boys and girls, respectively. Compared to the normal-weight youth, subjects with elevated BMI (BMI>85th) had higher risk of elevated BP (OR: 2.42, 95% CI: 2.13-2.75) than that of in elevated WC participants (OR: 2.00, 95% CI: 1.77-2.27). Therefore, BMI may associate better with elevated BP than WC in Chinese youth in our Seven Northeastern Cities study.

Limited research has explored longitudinal impact of stress on negative health outcomes, including overweight and obesity in Asian societies. Using data from a longitudinal school-based health promotion study conducted in Wuhan, China from 1999 to 2004, this study investigated the longitudinal effects of childhood stress exposure, including stressors related to school, family, peers, violence and health on overweight, and obesity risk during the transition to adolescence among 2179 Chinese adolescents. Results showed that health stressors were consistently related to higher BMI Z score for both boys and girls baseline, it also predicted higher likelihood of overweight status over time for girls. This finding highlights a particularly challenging time period for girls, suggesting a particular challenging time they face at the intersection of puberty and demanding school environment.

The development of talented athletes is a priority for many countries across the world, including China. A validated Chinese 5-factor Talent Development Environment Questionnaire (TDEQ-5) would go some way in helping researchers and practitioners investigate talent development systems within China from an evidence-based perspective. For this purpose, the 25-item English TDEQ-5 was translated to Chinese through a standardised process. The translated scale was then administered to 538 talented Chinese youth athletes. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed adequate model fit of the scale. The internal reliability, concurrent and discriminant validity, and test–retest reliability of the scale were adequately supported. The scale was also invariant across gender. It is recommended that the Chinese TDEQ-5 can be used with confidence in both applied and research settings.

This study compared Chinese adolescents' reports of covert parental monitoring with the overt strategies of solicitation and control. We investigated these behaviors in terms of unique associations with adolescents' perceived privacy invasion and the information management behaviors of disclosure and secrecy. High school students (N = 455, 61.5% female; Mage = 17.39, SD = 0.83) from a predominantly rural province of Mainland China reported a high incidence of covert monitoring (60.40%). Covert monitoring predicted privacy invasion more strongly than solicitation or control. Solicitation positively predicted disclosure, while covert monitoring negatively predicted disclosure and positively predicted secrecy. Privacy invasion fully mediated links between covert monitoring and information management. These latter effects were significantly stronger for girls than for boys. Similar to Western adolescents, Chinese youth might apply selective resistance when parents violate their personal domain. The findings suggest linkage between some parental monitoring behaviors and disruptions in Chinese family communication.

Background Chinese youth have become more sexually active over the years, yet their behaviours of contraceptive use are influenced by socioeconomic and lifestyle factors. This study aimed to investigate the socioeconomic and lifestyle determinants of contraceptive use among Chinese college students, and to investigate quantitatively their reasons for choosing different contraceptive methods. Methods The study used the data from a cross-sectional survey, which was conducted in 2015 among 17,517 students from 130 colleges and professional schools in mainland China. Chi-square tests were performed to test the differences in the awareness and uses of contraceptives between male and female students. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to analyse the associations between socioeconomic and lifestyle factors and contraceptive uses. Results Condoms (95%), oral contraceptives (91%) and emergency contraceptives (71%) were the most commonly known contraceptive methods among the sample of Chinese youth that were surveyed. Among male participants, high monthly expenditure (OR = 1.37, 95%CI: 1.07–1.75), light alcohol consumption (OR = 1.47, 95%CI: 1.03–2.11), and high sexual knowledge (OR = 1.96, 95%CI: 1.57–2.45) were positively associated with contraceptive uses, while tobacco use (OR = 0.47, 95%CI: 0.23–0.95) showed a negative association with contraceptive uses. Among female students, suburban residency (OR = 1.38, 95%CI: 1.03–1.83), high level of parental education (OR = 1.96, 95%CI: 1.19–3.22), moderate alcohol consumption (OR = 2.66, 95%CI: 1.05–6.77), and high sexual knowledge (OR = 1.50, 95%CI: 1.18–1.91) were positively associated with contraceptive uses, while tobacco use (OR = 0.60, 95%CI: 0.36–0.99) showed a negative association. Conclusions A series of socioeconomic and lifestyle factors were associated with contraceptive choices among Chinese college students. Targeted sexual education programs are in demand to improve the awareness and the use of contraceptives in this population.

This proposal expresses a standpoint concerning a discussion for the phenomenon of a poor sense of copyright in Chinese youth netizens and the suggestion. The phenomenon of a poor sense of copyright in Chinese youth netizens has disadvantages. By analyzing it, a clear status of Chinese youth netizens' problems on the poor sense of copyright will be shown. At the same time, when we consider a discussion for the phenomenon of a poor sense of copyright in Chinese youth netizens and the suggestion, we must address several main reasons that contribute to problem. These include cultural tradition restriction, incomprehensive market system, inappropriate price incentive, imperfective legal institutions and indifference education system. It is valuable for the originators feel free to create better works. Meanwhile, those factors are essential for Chinese youth netizens to consider the way to be cultivated the right spending habits. Only by analyzing all these factors together and then using these results to apply to intensity notional cultural competitiveness and form an innovative market. This paper is organized as follows: The first part will outline the poor sense of copyright in Chinese youth netizens' case studies and analyze. The second part is an introduction of the problems of the phenomenon of a poor sense of copyright in Chinese youth netizens. The reasons causing the problems are analyzed in part three. Some proposals to overcome copyright problem will be advocated in last part. This study found that enhancing copyright awareness is a very complex task for Chinese youth netizens. Cultural tradition restriction, incomprehensive market system, inappropriate price incentive, imperfective legal institutions and indifference education system are all factors which bring difficulties to promote copyright awareness in Chinese youth netizens. Combined those factors with four problems of the phenomenon in China, I offer appropriate suggestions to overcome problems and help youth netizens acquire the knowledge of copyright.

The current study examined the characteristics of targets of bullying using a sample of students from two distinct school types (key vs. non-key), wherein key middle schools are defined as having better teaching resources and higher performing students than non-key middle schools. Open-ended, self-report surveys were collected from 322 Chinese students in sixth to 11th grades. Two cycle coding methods analyses generated 3,566 original codes in which 21 main categories and 77 subcategories were extracted. Five major themes emerged: multiple deviant personalities; prominent puniness and imperfect body characteristics accompanied by polarization of appearance; polarization school engagement and academic performance; psychological and behavioral problems; and problematic family and social contexts. Results of chi-square analysis indicated characteristics of targets of bullying were significantly different between key and non-key school in 12 main categories. Implications for ecological systems theory and person-group dissimilarity theory as well as bullying prevention approaches in schools are discussed.

International audience; Reading from a postcolonial perspective the historical experience of a French educational establishment for Chinese youth in the 1920s – the Institut franco-chinois de Lyon – this article highlights the coincidence between the inscription of China in global modernity and the spread of a Chinese national imaginary. It questions the discursive connection between the Western colonial project of a ‘civilising mission’, applied here to the scientific education of a new Chinese elite and, in this context, the shaping of a peculiar Chinese national subject. This article understands this institution as a utopian synecdoche of China, being dressed simultaneously in the clothes of Chinese-ness and those of (Western) modernity. In this training school, where students endeavoured to become intellectuals and scientists fashioned by the methods, values and epistemologies of the French academic realm, in this place where students became familiar with ‘modern’ leisure and sports like football, tennis, cinema, snooker and so on, between those walls where students had to learn how to behave as ‘civilised/westernised’ modern men and women, China as a cultural, ethnic and national identity referent was, paradoxically, constantly mentioned in the discourse of both the students and the initiators of this educational institution.

Attenuated psychosis syndromes (APS) is defined as a high-risk state with an increased probability of developing a frank psychosis. It is crucial to investigate psychosis risk states in Chinese youth, including APS, in order to better understand characteristic features like psychotic-spectrum symptoms and the complexity of an individual’s real-life experience. In 2012, the “Shanghai At Risk for Psychosis (SHARP)” program was launched at the Shanghai Mental Health Center (SMHC), the largest outpatient mental health clinic in China. Here, we present both epidemiological data from this program and offer an APS case to illustrate the complexity and some common features of APS in China.

This article explores how graduates of a junior high school in Dalian City, Liaoning Province, China, chose their high school and college major subject of study and the extent to which their majors fit with their work trajectories. We found that most interviewees considered the likelihood of a major and degree leading to better job opportunities more important than how the major fit with their personal interests. However, the unpredictability of the market economy in China made it difficult to anticipate which majors would lead to more lucrative jobs, and many eventually found work that did not match their majors.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between low-grade inflammation (LI) and increased arterial stiffness in Chinese youth and adolescents with newly-diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: Ninety-eight subjects aged 10 to 24 years with newly-diagnosed T2DM were investigated for findings of general inflammation. Anthropometric measurements were taken. Data related to arterial stiffness [brachial artery distensibility (Branch D), augmentation index (AIx), carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (CF-PWV)] were collected. The subjects were divided into a non-LI group (NLI, n=42) and a LI group (n=56) according to their high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP) levels. In this paper, we examined if high SES families had an effect on youth’s adjustment by comparing 226 internationally adopted female Chinese youth who experienced pre-adoption institutionalization with 1059 non-adopted Chinese peers living in China, as well as 209 non-adopted American peers. On average, the adopted youth’s families had a higher SES status than the two comparison groups. Survey data on behavioral problems and prosocial adjustment were collected with the third edition of the Behavioral Assessment for Children (BASC-3). We found the adopted Chinese youth outperformed their Chinese counterparts in all comparisons and their US counterparts in most comparisons. These results offer some evidence that a high family SES may compensate for the adoption-related risks such as earlier institutionalization. Possible mechanisms underlying the benefit of high SES were discussed.

This study examines the association between childhood physical abuse and an increased risk for violent victimization in youth and young adulthood in China. It further assesses if this relationship is mediated by an individual’s routine activities. Data used in this study were collected from more than 2,000 individuals of school-based samples in Changzhi, a city of over 3 million people in Northern China. Drawing from a survey that captures childhood physical abuse, violent victimization, and routine activities, this study uses negative binominal regression to examine the relationships between childhood physical abuse, routine activities, and violent victimization among Chinese youth and young adults. We find that individuals who were physically abused in childhood were at a greater risk for violent victimization in youth and young adulthood, and that an individual’s routine activities (e.g., drinking) partially mediated this relationship. The findings from this study suggest that routine activity theory provides a useful framework for explaining the link between childhood physical abuse and risk for violent victimization in the Chinese context. Furthermore, our findings stress the importance of future research to look more closely at childhood experiences when studying future behaviors. In addition, our findings challenge beliefs held among Chinese parents about the acceptability of physical punishment to discipline children. These findings can be used to shape programs that create awareness of acceptable parenting practices in China.

This is a sociological analysis of empirical data regarding the alleged rising nationalism in contemporary China. Different from most of the studies of Chinese nationalism with a focus on the official and elite alike, as well as eye-catching nationalistic scenes, such as, pro-China demonstrations, this study adopts a micro-sociological approach and looks into how the forefront of China’s rising nationalism, the Chinese youth, engages with notions of nation and nationalism, and when, if at all, such notions become salient to them. Through this investigation, this article finds that the nation is not something students self-consciously engage themselves with between times of overt ‘hot’ nationalism display. So far from being fervent nationalists as has been suggested by some based on eye-catching nationalistic scenes, the forefront of China’s rising nationalism, the Chinese youth, neither actively (self-consciously) engages with nation and nationalism nor do they advance these to the highest political value as fervent nationalists do. Therefore, it is the contention of this article that the usual portrayal of a rising Chinese nationalism based on eye-catching nationalistic scenes overly exaggerates the degree to which the nation and nationalism are seriously and actively engaged by the Chinese people, especially the young Chinese who are supposed to be the most active social segment of the rising nationalism.

There are no cognitive studies of love conducted in an Asian culture. Our study is the first to probe the cognitive qualities that urban Chinese youth associate with what it means to be in love. To this end, we build on de Munck et al.’s pioneering studies in two European cultures (Russia, Lithuanian) and in the United States. Expanding on their study, we used a similar questionnaire that also includes additional questions designed to probe the youth of urban China’s perception and understanding of romantic love as an emotional and psychological force. We found that Chinese youths’ responses are similar to the Euro-American five core findings that all individuals, regardless of gender, experience when “in love.” These core attributes are as follows: “I will do anything for the person I love” (or altruism), “I constantly think about the person I am in love with” (or intrusive thinking), “romantic love is the supreme happiness of life” (or self-actualization), my “love makes my partner stronger and a better person,” (or emotional fulfillment), and “sexual attraction is necessary for love” (biology).

With the spread of Information communications technology\ud (ICT) in China, the tourism industry has come to recognize the importance of examining the factors that influence adoption of smartphones during leisure-based tourism among Chinese youth, a vital segment in what the world’s greatest domestic, inbound, and outbound 10 tourism market will be by 2020. Using data collected from undergraduate students at a university in China, this study, based on the technology acceptance model (TAM) and theory of reasoned action (TRA), found that an extended model can predict travelers' intentions. A detailed profile of Chinese youth and their smartphone usage is provided, and the managerial implications of increased adoption of Internet-capable smart- 15 phones during leisure-based tourism are also explored.
