The jumbo squid Dosidicus gigas is the most abundant cephalopod species in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, which supports the biggest cephalopod fishery in the world. Due to its growing economic importance, the population growth and distributional expansion of this squid is being increasingly studied. Nevertheless, some basic features of the biology of D. gigas are still unknown or have been poorly investigated. In this review we summarize the known information regarding the biology and ecology of this species in the southeastern Pacific Ocean; we focus on the Chilean region in order to propose hypotheses and research lines for a better understanding the life history of this organism. Available data on the size structure, reproduction and genetics of D. gigas allows us to propose hypotheses related to the squid's life history traits. Based on the current literature and publications of colleagues, we propose two hypotheses regarding the effect of spatial variation on the life history of D. gigas. Hypothesis 1: Squids mature at large sizes and spawn in oceanic waters with warm temperatures where paralarvae and juveniles develop. Immature squids migrate near shore to feed, grow and mature, and then return to the offshore sites to spawn. Hypothesis 2: Alternatively, juvenile D. gigas in the oceanic zone do not migrate to coastal waters and mature at small sizes compared to individuals living near the coast that mature at larger size and migrate to oceanic waters to spawn. We provide background information about the feeding behavior and parasitism of this species, suggesting that D. gigas is an important trophic link in the southeastern Pacific marine ecosystem. However, more studies on the feeding habits, reproduction and parasite load are needed not only to test hypotheses proposed in this study, but also to advance the overall knowledge of this species. Su creciente importancia económica, ha motivado el aumento de estudios asociados al crecimiento de sus poblaciones y su expansión geográfica. Sin embargo, algunas características biológicas básicas de esta especie son desconocidas o escasamente estudiadas. En esta revisión, se resume la información sobre la biología y ecología de esta especie para el Pacífico suroriental y se proponen hipótesis y líneas de investigación para el mejor entendimiento de su historia de vida. Los datos sobre estructura de tamaños, reproducción y aspectos genéticos de la especie, permiten avanzar en las hipótesis relacionadas con la historia de vida de estos rasgos. Hipótesis 1: Los calamares maduran a gran tamaño y desovan en aguas oceánicas con temperaturas cálidas, donde paralarvas y juveniles se desarrollan. Los calamares inmaduros migran hacia la costa para alimentarse, crecer y madurar, y luego vuelven a los sitios en alta mar para desovar. Hipótesis 2: Alternativamente, los juveniles de D. gigas en la zona oceánica no migran a las aguas costeras y maduran pequeños en comparación a los individuos que viven cerca de la costa que maduran a un tamaño más grande y migran a las aguas oceánicas para desovar. Se proponen dos hipótesis acerca de la variación espacial de la historia de vida. Además, se proporciona el marco relativo a la alimentación y parasitismo del calamar, que coloca a D. gigas como un importante nexo trófico en los ecosistemas marinos del Pacífico suroriental. Continuous monitoring of three specieswas undertaken between 1978 and 1999: Loligo gahi, Dosidicus gigas and Octopus mimus.Total cephalopod catches increased from 69 tonnes in 1978 (0.13% total mollusc catch) to 3503 tonnes in 1996 (3.64%).Amaximum haul of 15,169 tonnes was taken in 1992 (11.27% total mollusc catch). Small-scale fisheries accounted for the majority of cephalopod captures and industrial catches were rare. L. gahi is caught year-round mainly in the south of Chile, with maximum catches in summer and autumn. Catches of D. gigas are also year-round, mainly concentrated in central Chile. O. mimus has been fished since 1978, although recorded as Octopus vulgaris until the 1990s. The O. mimus fishery is located on the north coast of Chile, and catches are made for the most of the year. Octopus has been landed in the south of Chile since 1991, and is considered as O. mimus in capture statistics despite the fact that several species are represented, including Enteroctopus megalocyathus

The jumbo flying squid Dosidicus gigas is widely distributed in the eastern Pacific Ocean and supports an important fishery. Although many studies have been carried out on the biology of this species, limited biological information is available in the waters outside the Exclusive Economic Zone of Chile (EEZ) (20°S-41°S and 74°30’W-84°W). Three surveys were conducted in this area by the Chinese squid jigging vessels during the period from April 2006 to May 2008. The majority of the catch in the survey was from the two areas defined by 37°30’-41°S and 78°30’-80°W and by 25°-30°S and 76°-77°30’W. The sex ratio (M: F) of the catch was 1: 2.48. The mean mantle length (ML) was 376 mm for males with a range of 257-721 mm and 388.7 mm for females with a range of 236-837 mm. Two distinguished size classes, medium- and large-sized groups, were identified in this study with the medium-sized group (350-450 mm ML) consisting of 89% of the total catch. The sizes at first sexual maturity were 638 mm ML for females and 565 mm ML for males. This study suggests that all the individuals examined were hatched from March 2007 to February 2008, indicating that D. gigas might spawn all year around with a peak spawning time from November 2007 to January 2008. Most of the stomachs analyzed had food remains. The preys included three major groups: fish (mainly lanternfish), cephalopods and crustaceans, but D. gigas was the dominant species in the stomach contents, showing strong evidence of cannibalism. The information obtained from this study improves our understanding of the fishery biology of D. gigas off Chile., La pota gigante Dosidicus gigas está ampliamente distribuida en el océano Pacífico oriental y soporta una pesquería importante. Aunque se han realizado muchos estudios sobre la biología de esta especie, la información existente para aguas externas a la Zona Económica Exclusiva (ZEE) de Chile (20ºS-41ºS y 74º30’W-84ºW) es muy limitada. Los barcos poteros chinos realizaron tres campañas en esta área entre abril de 2006 y mayo de 2008. La mayoría de las capturas en esas campañas proceden de dos áreas definidas por las coordenadas 37º31’S-41ºS 78º30’W-80ºW y 25ºS-30ºS 76ºW-77º30’W, respectivamente. La relación sexual (M:H) en las capturas fue de 1:2.48. La longitud media del manto (LM) fue de 376 mm para los machos con un rango que varió entre 257 y 721 mm, y de 388.7 mm para las hembras (236-837 mm). Se diferenciaron dos clases de tamaño: un grupo medio, cuya LM varió entre 350 y 450 mm representando un 89% de la captura total, y un grupo grande. La talla de primera maduración sexual fue de 638 mm para las hembras y de 565 mm para los machos. Este trabajo sugiere que todos los individuos examinados habían nacido entre marzo de 2007 y febrero de 2008, lo cual indica que D. gigas puede frezar durante todo el año, habiendo existido un pico de puesta desde noviembre de 2007 hasta enero de 2008. La mayoría de los estómagos analizados contenían restos. Las presas incluyen tres grandes grupos de organismos: peces (principalmente mictófidos), cefalópodos y crustáceos. Sin embargo, D. gigas fue la presa dominate en los contenidos estomacales, lo cual es una evidencia del fuerte canibalismo existente en esta especie. La información que se deriva de este trabajo mejora nuestro conocimiento sobre la biología de D. gigas frente a Chile.

Se estudiaron los hábitos alimentarios del calamar rojo Dosidicus gigas (D'Orbigny, 1835) frente a la costa de Chile centro-sur, durante el invierno del año 2005. Se examinaron un total de 52 estómagos, en todos los cuales había contenido alimentario. Los ejemplares provenían de pescas efectuadas por la flota arrastrera industrial que opera entre 36°39' S y 38°55'S sobre la merluza común Merluccius gayi (Guichenot 1848) y a una profundidad media de 290 m sobre la plataforma continental. Para la descripción del espectro trófico, alimento principal y el establecimiento de las eventuales diferencias sexuales u ontogenéticas en la frecuencia de aparición de los ítemes presa, se utilizaron los métodos numérico, gravimétrico, de frecuencia de ocurrencia, índice de importancia relativa (IIR) e índice de similitud porcentual (ISP). No se observaron diferencias sexuales ni ontogenéticas en la frecuencia de aparición de los ítemes presa. Los resultados muestran que D. gigas es un depredador oportunista, principalmente ictiófago, y secundariamente malacófago (incluye el canibalismo) y carcinófago. Se discuten los eventuales motivos e implicancias de tal conducta A study on the feeding habits of the jumbo squid Dosidicus gigas (D'Orbigny, 1835) was carried out during the winter season 2005, in waters of the Chilean central and southern Pacific. A total of 52 jumbo squid stomachs from the fishing of the continental slope were collected and examined, in the Eighth and Ninth regions, between 36°40' S and 38°55'S, at an average depth of 290 m. To determine the trophic spectrum, the feeding preferences and the importance of the sex and ontogenetic condition in the diet, the numeric, gravimetric, frequency of occurrence methods, and the index of relative importance and dietary similarity were utilized. The frequency of the prey did not vary with relation to the sex and ontogenetic conditions, and was besides a hight trophic similarity in such analysis. The results showed that the diet of D. gigas consist predominatly of fishes and secondly of Mollusca (to include the cannibalism) and crustacean; suggesting that D. gigas is an oportunistic predator of third trophic level. El presente trabajo estudia la biología reproductiva de la jibia o calamar gigante, Dosidicus gigas frente a la costa de Chile central capturados en julio-agosto (invierno) y octubre-noviembre (primavera) de 1993. En 254 hembras (93 de invierno y 161 de primavera) se analizó el estado de madurez microscópico, determinándose un predominio de hembras en maduración, y en menor porcentaje a punto de desovar. El índice gonadosomático (IGS) y el índice del peso del complejo oviductual (IPCO) indicaron que las hembras estaban en un proceso de maduración gonádica. En hembras, el IGS y el IPCO muestran diferencias significativas en los valores promedio entre invierno y primavera (p= 0,000 y p= 0,002, respectivamente). Sólo para el IPCO de invierno existió una relación lineal con la longitud dorsal del manto (p=0,009, r²=0,067). En aguas chilenas la presencia de hembras maduras de D. gigas abarcaría gran parte del año, alcanzando los ejemplares de invierno una mayor talla de madurez sexual.

The present study examines the reproductive biology of the giant squid, Dosidicus gigas collected off the coast of north-central Chile from july-august (winter) to october-november (spring) of 1993. In 254 females (93 in winter and 161 in spring) the microscopic stage of maturity was analyzed, being determined a prevalence of females in maturation, and in smaller percentage near the spawning. The Gonadosomatic Index (IGS) and the Index of the Weight of the Oviductual Complex (IPCO) indicated females were in process of gonadic maturation. Seasonal significant differences for IGS and IPCO were found between winter and spring (p=0,000 and p=0,002, respectively). Only winter IPCO showed a lineal relationship with the mantle dorsal length (p=0,009, r²=0,067). In Chilean waters mature females of D. gigas were found the major part of the year, but the winter individuals had bigger size of sexual maturity.
