There is a lack of research on effective interventions to improve the early numeracy skills of children with severe disabilities---autism spectrum disorder, developmental disability, and intellectual disability---and complex communication needs. While preliminary research suggests the Early Numeracy curriculum is effective for teaching children with severe disabilities, efficacy of this curriculum has not yet been examined for students with co-occurring complex communication needs. Using a multiple probe across participants research design, we evaluated the efficacy of the Early Numeracy curriculum for increasing targeted math skills of four children with severe disabilities and complex communication needs. Results indicated a functional relation between the intervention and improvements in early math skills. Limitations and future research needs are discussed.

Collected time-use diaries of television viewing from two cohorts of children (ages 2-5 and 4-7) from low-income families and gave annual tests of reading, math, receptive vocabulary, and school readiness. Found that viewing of child-audience informative programs between ages 2 and 3 predicted higher academic performance. Frequent viewers of general-audience programs performed more poorly than infrequent viewers. (Author/KB)

Time-use diaries were collected over a 3-year period for 2 cohorts of 2- and 4-year-old children. TV viewing declined with age. Time spent in reading and educational activities increased with age on weekdays but declined on weekends. Time-use patterns were sex-stereotyped, and sex differences increased with age. As individuals' time in educational activities, social interaction, and video games increased, their time watching entertainment TV declined, but time spent playing covaried positively with entertainment TV. Educational TV viewing was not related to time spent in non-TV activities. Maternal education and home environment quality predicted frequent viewing of educational TV programs and infrequent viewing of entertainment TV. The results do not support a simple displacement hypothesis; the relations of TV viewing to other activities depend on the program content, the nature of the competing activity, and the environmental context.

We examined the effectiveness of systematic prompting of peer-related behaviors delivered during small group academic instructional sessions with three dyads of preschool-aged children with deficits in social competence. One child was randomly assigned as the target child in each dyad. A multiple-probe single-case research design was utilized to examine the functional relation between a system-of-least prompts procedure and the frequency of unprompted peer-related social behaviors emitted by target children during small group instructional sessions. The results support a functional relation between systematic prompting and peer-related behaviors, and all three target children increased their use of peer-related behaviors. Furthermore, we examined the effect of intervention on the untrained peer play partner (i.e., observational learning). Two of the three peers increased their use of peer-related social behaviors; however, results were variable and did not support a functional relation. Our study extends the research in this area by examining the effectiveness of small group instruction on potentially context dependent, complex social behaviors (e.g., sharing materials, complimenting a friend, offering to help).
