This paper reports an attempt to enhance Japanese learners’ Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) through an undergraduate English class in 2022. The students read essays on an American writer’s experience living in Japan, exchanged thoughts, and gave individual presentations. They also learned and practiced discussion skills in the first half of the semester. In the second half, they read and discussed several chapters of a book on propaganda and gave group presentations. Its effectiveness was examined by conducting a questionnaire survey after the first and last lessons based on the Council of Europe’s (2018b) Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture (RFCDC). The 21 participants responded to pre- and post-surveys, wrote reflections on their learning, and gave consent to the use of their responses for research. Their answers to the multiple-choice questions were analyzed using SPSS, and their comments were analyzed using KH-Coder. Significant improvement was found in some descriptors in the competence areas of “attitudes,” “skills,” and “knowledge and critical understanding.” The participants’ comments revealed that the activities of sharing opinions in groups, practicing discussion skills, including how to disagree politely, lessons on culture and propaganda, and group work for group presentations contributed to the improvement. To what extent do we value future generations? It may seem from our behavior that we don't value future generations much at all, at least in relation to how much we value present generations. However, in his book Death and the Afterlife, Samuel Scheffler argues that we value the future even more than we value the present, even though this is not immediately apparent to us. If Scheffler's argument is sound, then it has important ramifications: It would give us a strong motivation to put more energy into abating environmental crises like climate change, and it supports at least a limited form of ethical longtermism. However, in this paper, I show that Scheffler's argument is fallacious. Scheffler claims that we do not regard the fact that we in the present generation will all die relatively soon as a catastrophe, but we do regard the non-existence of future generations as a catastrophe. But the particular scenario used by Scheffler to illustrate this point—the plot of the book The Children of Men—is one in which both the present generation will perish and there will be no future generations, and it is this conjunction that is catastrophic, thus giving no information about which is worse. I suggest other ways to compare our valuations of present and future generations, and recommend that philosophers who are interested in the moral psychology of how we value future generations ought to engage with social science, as it is an empirical issue. COMPARATOR circuits ,CINAHL database ,RESEARCH personnel ,CHILDREN'S books - Abstract
Background: Pragmatic trials evaluating complex health interventions often compare them to usual care. This comparator should resemble care as provided in everyday practice. However, usual care can differ for the same condition, between patients and practitioners, across clinical sites and over time. Heterogeneity within a usual care arm can raise methodological and ethical issues. To address these it may be necessary to standardise what usual care entails, although doing so may compromise a trial's external validity. Currently, there is no guidance detailing how researchers should decide the content of their usual care comparators. We conducted a methodology review to summarise current thinking about what should inform this decision. Methods: MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL and PsycINFO were searched from inception to January 2022. Articles and book chapters that discussed how to identify or develop usual care comparators were included. Experts in the field were also contacted. Reference lists and forward citation searches of included articles were screened. Data were analysed using a narrative synthesis approach. Results: One thousand nine hundred thirty records were identified, 1611 titles and abstracts screened, 112 full texts screened, and 16 articles included in the review. Results indicated that the content of a usual care comparator should be informed by the aims of the trial, existing care practices, clinical guidelines, and characteristics of the target population. Its content should also be driven by the trial's requirements to protect participants, inform practice, and be methodologically robust, efficient, feasible and acceptable to stakeholders. When deciding the content of usual care, researchers will need to gather information about these drivers, balance tensions that might occur when responding to different trial objectives, and decide how usual care will be described and monitored in the trial. Discussion: When deciding the content of a usual care arm, researchers need to understand the context in which a trial will be implemented and what the trial needs to achieve to address its aim and remain ethical. This is a complex decision-making process and trade-offs might need to be made. It also requires research and engagement with stakeholders, and therefore time and funding during the trial's design phase. Trial registration: PROSPERO CRD42022307324. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures keeps a small collection of fragments of ancient Egyptian qeresu-coffins dated to the Late Period (ca. 747-332 BCE), specifically the Twenty-fifth Dynasty (ca. 747-664 BCE). Five of the six pieces came from the Monthu priests' burials at Deir el-Bahri and have been already published in the past. The sixth unprovenanced specimen, Inv. No. P 4551, is dealt with in the present paper. While its provenience remains unknown it was accessioned as part of the former study collection of the Czechoslovak Institute of Egyptology, Charles University in Prague. The decoration of the piece comprises of depictions of two Sons of Horus, Amset and Hapi, with captions and partially preserved texts of two chapters of the Book of the Dead, namely the Chapter BD 1 and Chapter BD 72. Both of these spells represented typical components of the decoration of coffins. Based on the texts, the anonymous owner of the coffin could be identified as a woman. The stylistic analysis confirmed the dating of the fragment to the Twentyfifth Dynasty and its Theban provenience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates why auditors engage in practitioner research and whether these auditors subsequently provide higher audit quality and increase their reputation. Based on the theory of domain learning as well as insights from interviews, we argue that engaging in practitioner research could help auditors to acquire expertise relevant for performing the audit. Further, we draw on signaling theory and argue that this engagement might also contribute to the development of auditors' reputation. We use the German setting for our study, where many auditors write professional articles, books, and book chapters. We observe that various motivational and support factors are important determinants for writing publications. We find that having prior publications is associated with higher audit quality, i.e. lower absolute discretionary accruals and a lower likelihood of restatements. Finally, we provide indications that having prior publications helps auditors to develop their reputation, i.e. achieving growth in their client portfolio. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gesar (ge sar) is a warrior-like king in the realm of Ling (gling) and the protagonist of a voluminous folkloric poem that many Tibetan bards have performed for centuries. With Gesar's increasing fame in modern times, the orature has become a quintessential representation of Tibetan culture. This paper compares two children's books that draw on the Gesar tradition, Tibetan Heroic Epic: Gesar Children's Literature Collection (gling ge sar sgrung gi byis pa'i rtsom rig dpe tshogs) and Gesar Epic: Hor-Ling Battle (ge sar rgyal po'i sgrung hor gling gyul 'gyed). The two books approach the relationship between adaptation and authenticity differently, with Tibetan Heroic Epic adhering to textual renditions of the orature, while Gesar Epic significantly transforms the ancient tradition. The latter is more accessible for children. As much as the editors of Tibetan Heroic Epic aspire to present an authentic Tibetan tradition to children, their method of literal transcription is unappealing and unsuccessful. The problem of Tibetan Heroic Epic mainly lies in a flawed understanding of cultural authenticity. Culture, when alive and thriving, is mobile and fluid. Hence, the authenticity of culture is not about keeping a tradition unchanged from the past to the future. With Gesar's adaptation in children's literature as an example, the author argues that cultural authenticity is not an imagined reservoir of immutability. Instead, authenticity is generated from changes made by people who know and own that particular culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Elements of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in diverse books support children's intellectual, social, and emotional development. Public library storytime programs serve as venues to showcase books with characters of varied backgrounds, identities, and experiences who may or may not reflect those of the communities the libraries serve. Because storytime providers often rely on online resources to plan their programs, it is important to investigate the presence and quality of EDI elements in books recommended for storytimes by these resources. The present study analyzed the text, illustrations, and WorldCat metadata for a random sample of 481 children's books recommended by six popular online resources for storytime planning. Results revealed an overall lack of EDI in the recommended books with few characters representing parallel cultures, living with a disability or chronic illness, practicing a religion other than Christianity, or communicating in a language other than English. The paper includes implications for storytime providers and library administrators in the areas of program planning, professional development, and program assessment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ming Xin Bao Jian, compiled by Fan Liben in the Ming Dynasty, is an enlightenment book for children and a morality book for adults focused on moral education. There are some issues to be further discussed in the aspects of the source of citations, punctuation, collation and annotation in the existing versions. Through extensive collection and combing of relevant literature materials, in this paper, some suggestions on the text collation are put forward in terms of exploring sources, multi-version text comparison, text character identification, interpreting the meaning of the words, and clarifying the meanings of the sentences. HUNGARIAN literature ,CHILDREN'S books - Abstract
This paper asks why so few works of Hungarian children's literature have made it to publication in English-speaking countries. It finds that few translated children's books make it onto the English-language market and those translations that are successful mainly appear in major European languages. Representation at the Bologna Children's Book Fair has been dogged by a lack of financial resources and polish while Hungarian State funding has lacked continuity. Nearly all the English translations of Hungarian children's books available today have been published in Hungary, although a book will occasionally find its way to foreign publishers by informal means. This paper also follows the development of Hungarian children's literature from the late nineteenth century to the present day, noting changes in terms of character, subject matter and attitudes to diversity and use of the fairytale tradition. It outlines one recent controversy surrounding the publication of Meseország mindenkié ['Storyland for Everybody'], a book which aims, in contrast to the current regime's ideology, to represent the marginalized in Hungarian society. It also details recent clashes sparked by the new Hungarian National School Curriculum and one writer's feminist critique of a classic text. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RECORDS management ,TRAINING of executives ,CHILDREN'S books ,AFRICANA studies ,SCHOOL year - Abstract
This article is part of a contribution to honour Professor Justus Wamukoya, one of the leading records and archival practitioners and academics in Africa. The article started as a book chapter that Prof. Wamukoya had contributed to a proposed book meant to be published by professional colleagues at the University of Botswana during the four years that Prof Wamukoya spent with them. Unfortunately, the publication of the book was overtaken by events and interest in completing the work waned over time. However, Prof. Wamukoya's chapter has been converted into an article that is now being published as a tribute to remember him and his passion for the profession. The article looks at records management development in Africa and challenges and constraints that hinder development of records management in Africa. It also presents examples of some case studies in African governments aimed at improving records management. Much of the information used in this paper is from general literature and personal experience of the author having witnessed these developments during his years as a practitioner and academic. The aim of this paper is to critically review how social semiotics has contributed to the study of reading and to develop an agenda for further research. We consider the theoretical and methodological resources that social semiotics has developed to account for multimodal text in the contemporary semiotic landscape, and explore how they can be used to teach critical reading skills to young people to support their participation in different social domains. We reflect on the possibilities and limitations of different analytical frameworks, highlighting barriers and possibilities for advancing social semiotic scholarship on reading and beyond. We end with a sketch of a new research agenda for social semiotics, in the light of technological change and its implications for reading. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This conceptual paper contributes toward our understanding of the underlying mechanisms in children's understanding of self and the other with media. We synthesize diverse bodies of literature, concerned with children's reading with digital and traditional (print) books, to explicate the parameters that may, in part, explain positive learning outcomes and further illuminate the patterns across various measures. We propose the "Distance Model," which suggests that a child's interest in a reading activity depends on its proximity to the child's funds of identity (Esteban-Guitart and Moll, 2014). The closer the proximity, the more salient the impact on the child's cognitive understanding and sense of belonging. The familiarity of the reading content and the relevance of the reading medium for a child's personal life can be evoked through a number of reading strategies and design techniques, which we discuss in relation to children's literature and the contemporary design of children's interactive e-books. We conclude with some suggestions regarding future applications of the Distance Model in children's media research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The future of countries depends on the educational opportunities provided to their children. As in every country, the Ottoman Empire understood the importance of child education after Tanzimat and took steps on this issue in the 1869 Maarifi Umumiye Regulation. In the following years, the number of printed and periodical publications for children's education increased. As the first book for ottoman-era children's education, "Children's First Information" is published by Ali Nazima in 1890 with the approval of Maarif Custody. In this field, it is seen that it was published in booklet types for children before this date. One of them is the booklet titled "Gift for Children (1875)", which was printed by maarif custody in this study. The printing of the book in the state printing press and the distribution of it to children through maarif power of attorney shows the importance given to children's education at that time. In this study, document analysis technique was used. In this booklet, scientific advice, geographical knowledge, Ottoman history, plant science, nebatat, animal science-zoo, various professions and moral knowledge are given as examples. When evaluated in terms of its period, this booklet, which is at the level of preschool and the elementary school, shows that it contributes to the general cultural knowledge of children. This paper is a study of the fantastic character throughout the history of human civilization. This type of character has evolved from the hybrid creatures playing a divine role in the art of Assyro-Babylonian civilizations and of Ancient Egypt, to the monstrous characters of the Middle Ages which served as substitutes for sin and the force of evil, visible in the entrelacs of illuminated manuscripts or the gargoyles guarding the walls of Gothic cathedrals, to the characters of non-human origin in children's book illustrations, and up to the characters found in fantasy films or today's hybrids, who are in a perfect relationship with technological and cultural evolution. The paper discusses some original visions and working methods, from the slightly humorous portraits signed by Arcimboldo, the hybridization of animal kingdoms, in a much more tragic register, in the works of Hieronymus Bosch or the fantastic character used as a weapon of political and moral satire in the works of Goya and Grandville, to the unexpected, occult and mysterious visions of Ernst Fuchs' creations or the imaginary universe populated by hybrid beings, of 'extra-terrestrial origin, found in the works of HR Giger. This paper explores the theme of children in the book of Job. It will be argued that a significant theme in Job is divine blessing through progeny to continue his household name. Both Job and his friends refer to the death of his progeny in the prologue as a sign of disfavor and the possible reinstatement of his children as divine favor. The focus upon progeny as heirs to continue the house of Job explains why the replacement of children in the epilogue is not presented as problematic in the text. Within the text, progeny is the sign of divine favor not specific children, so the epilogue is only concerned with the reinstatement of potential heirs to continue Job's name. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CHILDREN'S books ,ENGLISH language education ,ENGLISH as a foreign language - Abstract
The increasingly important position of English language in the world makes children's learning of English a concern of teachers as well as parents. However, due to children's cognitive traits, they are reluctant to spend a long time reading paper books which, from their point of view, seem to be tedious and boring. Gradually, they will probably lose interest in reading and for a long time this issue has vexed many teachers and parents. With the development of computer technology, we have entered into a digital age in which ICT (Information and Communication Technology) tools has been implemented into our lives and has become more accessible to children than ever before. The children who grow up in a digital environment have become affinitive to digital technologies. Many ICT tools have been proven to have the ability to facilitate learning. It is possible to find a kind of technology to help children with reading. An e-book is an ICT tool among them. It combines educational content intended to teach and entertainment. It is a book publication made available in digital form stimulating senses and making learning enjoyable. The concept of using e-books in the process of teaching-learning is in conformity with the didactic principle of audiovisual education and constructivism. In this paper, we will explore the features as well as the benefits of children's e-books and analyze the theoretical foundation of using e-books in education. We also share previous studies on the use of children's ebooks. We come to the conclusion that an e-book is a useful means for supporting and encouraging children's learning of English as a second language. In the end, we will provide the implication on the use of children's e-books. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Unreliable narrators, multiple perspectives, and lack of a resolution are all experiences children in the twenty-first century increasingly encounter. These traits are present in metafictive children’s texts and are characteristics of the postmodern era. There is a greater need to equip students with skills to interpret, evaluate, and analyse various forms of communication and representation. Metafictive strategies have increasingly been incorporated into children’s books in the past decade. This paper adopts a reader-response perspective to explore the potential of metafictive elements to cultivate active readers. Through a qualitative case study approach, the paper examines the responses of 11-year-olds to two metafictive novels:
The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket, andThe Name of this Book is Secret by Pseudonymous Bosch. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

RING formation (Chemistry) , *PROBLEM solving , *CHILDREN'S books , *TETRAHEDRA - Abstract
Several forerunners to the Woodward‐Hoffmann rules appear in the chemical literature in the early 1960s. While these precedents refer to orbital symmetry and explain either electrocyclic reactions (Luitzen Oosterhoff, cited by Egbert Havinga and Jos Schlatmann in Tetrahedron in 1961) or some cycloaddition reactions (Kenichi Fukui, in a book chapter published in 1964), they did not attract any attention and did not serve to initiate any research prior to the publication of the five Woodward and Hoffmann communications in 1965. Even Woodward and Hoffmann were unaware of these precedents (though Hoffmann knew of Fukui's frontier orbital theory) until after they had completed the relevant portions of their work. The Oosterhoff‐Havinga‐Schlatmann story will be told in this paper; the Fukui story will be told in the next paper in this series on the history of the development of the Woodward‐Hoffmann rules. Explanations for these precedents not being productive in solving the no‐mechanism problem are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PICTURE books ,EARLY childhood educators ,CHILDREN'S books ,LITERARY prizes ,CULTURAL values - Abstract
This paper investigates the visual and verbal representation of diversity in Australian early childhood picture books, focusing on those that have been shortlisted for the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Early Childhood Book of the Year award (2001–2020). Educators at all levels draw on award lists to help create their reading lists and build their library collections. For early childhood to kindergarten educators, these selections are principally picture books. Picture books are significant for the cultural messages and values they convey about society, and for helping children learn about their world. How diverse that world is impacts on a child's sense of belonging and inclusion. Using content analysis, this study demonstrates the extent to which the story worlds in the CBCA award winning early childhood picture books may be considered a source of diversity for young Australian readers. This paper sets out to investigate interracial adoption narratives in children's picture books and explores how these narratives are constructed through the combined use of verbal and visual metaphors. The study examines a selection of six picture books published in the U.S.A. over the last few years and targeting a readership between the ages of four and eight. Interracial adoption books can help youngsters make sense of their reality and can be relied upon to initiate family conversations about difficult topics such as the lack of genetic bond and resemblance between parents and children. Since metaphors involve talking about one thing in terms of another, they can be strategically used in picture books to make complex concepts accessible to young readers. The study identifies the main metaphorical configurations of interracial adoption discourses in children's books by means of a hybrid methodological toolkit that integrates the approaches of Critical Discourse Analysis, Critical Metaphor Analysis and Multimodal Metaphor Studies. Findings suggest that narratives about interracial adoption are positively biased and often contain oversimplifications or inaccurate descriptions of adoptees' life situations; while these stories aim to offer children reassuring answers about complicated issues such as identity and ethnicity, they frequently fail to provide validation for adoptees' ambivalent feelings towards their new situations and families. CHILDREN'S books , *READING promotion , *CHILDREN'S literature , *LIBRARY administration , *LITERARY prizes , *CRITICAL thinking , *SCHOOL children - Abstract
Purpose. The aim of this paper is to present the activities of the Children's Jury of the "Grigor Vitez Award" organized by the Croatian Center for Children's Books at the Zagreb City Libraries and reading promotion among older primary school children. It also seeks to emphasize the importance of collaboration between the library and external partners in achieving the goals of reading promotion. Approach/methodology. After an introduction to the topic of reading promotion, the first part of the paper presents children's juries in the world and in Croatia, as well as programs to promote reading in the Zagreb City Libraries. The second part of the paper explains in detail the work, activities, and importance of the Children's Jury in reading promotion among children and young people. Findings. Children's scoring of books, their written explanations and selection of the best books reveal what children love and want to read. Having the right to directly select the award winners of the „Ptičica Award", the children members the Children's Jury are given special importance, as well as the libraries from which they come and the librarians who have recommended them. Also, the award winners are especially honoured to receive the award from the children for whom they wrote or illustrated the book. Since the award-winning books are popular and gladly read, the members of the Children's Jury are a positive example and encouragement to other children in reading quality literature. Practical implications. In the Croatian Association of the Societies „Naša djeca", there is a vision to expand the „Grigor Vitez Award" through cooperation with other Croatian libraries in the organization of additional content and programs, including the Children's Jury. Social implications. Through reading promotion, developing critical thinking, and enhancing the freedom of expression of children and youth through the work of the Children's Jury, the library, as their organizer, plays an important role in building a better society as a whole. Originality/value. The Children's jury of the „Grigor Vitez Award" is the only children's jury for children's and youth literature in Croatia that selects the best books and awards in two categories: text and illustration, which gives importance to both the writer and the illustrator of the literary work. ANATOMY ,PROHEXADIONE-calcium ,HISTORY of medicine ,CHILDREN'S books - Abstract
Purpose: The publication of the compendium Pantegni by Constantinus Africanus in the monastery of Monte Cassino in the eleventh century CE was a pivotal moment in the history of medicine in Western Europe. The work is predominantly based on the Liber regalis by Haly Abbas (Baghdad, tenth century CE). The earliest available manuscript of the Pantegni (KB 73 J6) is handwritten and has been supervised by Constantinus himself. It includes a chapter on ocular anatomy. In this paper we try to distill the anatomic description by Constantinus. Methods: The chapter “de oculis” on ocular anatomy as found in chapter 13 of book 3 in KB 73 J6 is interpreted in the historical context and translated into Modern English. Results: We present an English translation of the concerning chapter. Conclusion: Constantinus bequeathed a compact but comprehensive account of the anatomy of the eye, which can be rendered into a contemporary representation with use of the historical context.
