Abstract: The article discusses a study to examine the effect of the minimum nurse-patient staffing legislation (AB 394) passed in California in 1999, on nursing population demographics. According to this law, a minimum number of licensed nurses must be assigned to a set number of medical-surgical patients. It was found that since implementation of the law, job satisfaction had increased amongst nurses. The need to offer non-pecuniary incentives such as career advancements was also highlighted.
