Water electrolysis is a promising technology to produce hydrogen but it was severely restricted by the slow oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we firstly reported an advanced electrocatalyst of MOF-derived hollow Zn–Co–Ni sulfides (ZnS@Co9S8@Ni3S2-1/2, abbreviated as ZCNS-1/2) nanosword arrays (NSAs) with remarkable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), OER and corresponding water electrolysis performance. To reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2, the cell voltage of assembled ZCNS-1/2//ZCNS-1/2 for urea electrolysis (1.314 V) is 208 mV lower than that for water electrolysis (1.522 V) and stably catalyzed for over 15 h, substantially outperforming the most reported water and urea electrolysis electrocatalysts. Density functional theory calculations and experimental result clearly reveal that the properties of large electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) caused by hollow NSAs and fast charge transfer resulted from the Co9S8@Ni3S2 heterostructure endow the ZCNS-1/2 electrode with an enhanced electrocatalytic performance.

This article deals with the numerical simulation of a two-dimensional instantaneous heat and mass transfer processes within a commonly used intermetallic compound (a.k.a. Mischmetal) packed in a unit disc of an annulus-disc reactors, during hydrogen gas desorption. Using the finite volumes technique bundled in the OpenFOAM® CFD code, temperature and amount of desorbed hydrogen and their time-averaged quantities inside the metal-hydride packed bed are obtained for various temperatures of fluids used in heat transfer, and several outlet pressure magnitudes. Using a set of numerical simulations, we have emphasized the impacts of both parameters on metal-hydride reactor performance related to discharging time. An excellent accord was recorded for the present simulations results compared against the literature-reported experimental data [20].

Galvanisasi merupakan proses pelapisan dengan seng ( Zinc ), dengan caara mencelupkan logam yang akan dilapisi kedalam media pelapis zinc yang sebelumnya telah mengalami proses peleburan, dimana titik lebur logam pelapis harus lebih rendah dari logam yang akan dilapisi. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh waktu pencelupan dan temperatur terhadap proses pencelupan. Analisis yang akan dilakukan adalah uji ketebalan permukaan dan melakukan uji kekerasan bahan setelah dilakukan pencelupan. Dalam penelitian ini material yang digunakan adalah baja dengan tipe UNP, Sebelum dilakukan Hot Dip Galvanized perlu dilakukan pretreatment menggunakan bahan kimia, yaitu proses degreasing, water rinsing, pickling, fluxing, drying . Setelah itu dilakukan tahap Galvanisasi, Variabel yang akan digunakan adalah suhu zinc bath 440 o C,445 o C,450 o C dan waktu pencelupan 2,4,6,8,10 menit. Dari hasil analisis semakin lama waktu pencelupan pada proses hot dip galvanizing mengakibatkan semakin tebal lapisan zinc yang dihasilkan dan Semakin tinggi temperatur zinc saat proses hot dip galvanizing juga mengakibatkan semakin tebal lapisan zinc yang di hasilkan, di karenakan kekentalan dari zinc menurun.

The concentration and sources of organic nitrogen (ON) in lake sediment significantly affect the lake nitrogen cycle. However, the influencing factors and contributors to the ON accumulation rate (ONAR) are unclear. In this study, tree sediment cores from northern, eastern, and southern Dianchi Lake (DC-N, DC-E, and DC-S, respectively), sampled in July 2014, were used to study the effects of autochthonous and allochthonous sources on ON. The results showed that ON and the ONAR increased 2.4–5.1 and 2.6–4.8 times, respectively, from1900 to2000, especially since the 1980s, at which point algal blooms occurred more frequently. The ON contents decreased in the order: DC-S > DC-N > DC-E, whereas the ONAR values followed the order: DC-N > DC-S > DC-E, suggesting that the ONAR was influenced by ON content as well as depositional environmental conditions. The total concentrations of n-alkanes (n-C12 to n-C34) ranged from 4719.4 ng g− 1 to 61,959.6 ng g− 1 in the three sediment cores, each of which exhibited different n-alkanes characteristic variation with vertical depth. The sources of ON were mainly allochthonous (soil erosion and terrestrial plants) and autochthonous (algal and aquatic plants) in DC-S and DC-N, respectively, whereas they were primarily mixed planktonic and terrestrial sources in DC-E. Using the stochastic impacts by regression on population, affluence, and technology model to further examine the ONAR values revealed that 1% increase in temperature and nitrogen fertilizer can increase the ONAR by 73.8–86.2% and 73.2–151.3% in all sediments, especially in DC-S and DC-E. However, a 1% increase in construction area could reduce the ONAR by 2.4–14.2%, especially in DC-N. Overall, climate change and human activities determine the spatial and temporal ONAR variation in Dianchi Lake.

Statement of problem The crystallization process of lithium disilicate crowns has been reported to cause dimensional change, but whether the fit of chairside computer-aided design and computer-aided manufactured (CAD-CAM) zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate crowns is affected is unclear. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate with a 3-dimensional superimposition analysis technique the marginal and internal adaptation of fully crystallized versus partially crystallized zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramic CAD-CAM fabricated crowns. Additionally, the silicone replica technique and direct viewing of marginal gap values were compared with the 3-dimensional superimposition analysis technique. Material and methods The marginal and internal adaptation of a fully crystallized zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (CELTRA DUO) were compared with those of a partially crystallized zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (VITA SUPRINITY) after crystallization. Sixteen crowns (n=8) were fabricated with a chairside CAD-CAM system. The crowns and die and crown assembly were scanned with an optical scanner for the 3-dimensional superimposition analysis. Four hundred sixty-eight measurements were made for each crown, 78 in each 2-dimensional section. Marginal discrepancy was measured by using the direct viewing technique. The internal adaptation of the shoulder area, axial space, and occlusal space was measured by using the silicone replica technique. Both gap values were compared with the 3-dimensional superimposition analysis results by using the independent t test. The 2-way ANOVA was used to detect the effect of each variable (group and site) (α=.05). Results The VITA SUPRINITY crowns showed statistically higher marginal discrepancy values than the CELTRA DUO crowns in both 3-dimensional superimposition analysis and the direct viewing method, and the lingual aspect recorded the highest marginal discrepancy mean value when compared with other aspects. The 3-dimensional superimposition analysis and the direct viewing method were statistically similar (P=.076). The VITA SUPRINTY crowns showed higher internal gap mean values than the CELTRA DUO crowns in both 3-dimensional superimposition analysis and silicone replica techniques. The occlusal space recorded the highest mean value in both groups. Assessment by 3-dimensional superimposition analysis and silicone replica techniques showed statistical difference in internal gap values (P=.04). Conclusions CELTRA DUO showed better precision fit values than VITA SUPRINITY. Three-dimensional superimposition analysis is a reliable method of evaluating marginal and internal adaptation.

The electrochemical performance of solid oxide cells (SOCs) is investigated under both fuel cell and electrolyzer operations to understand their asymmetric behavior between the two operation modes. The current–voltage and electrochemical impedance characteristics of a hydrogen-electrode-supported cell are experimentally analyzed. Also, a numerical model is developed to reproduce the cell performance and to understand the internal resistances of the cell. Partial pressures of supplied gas and load current are varied to evaluate their effects on the cell performance. The gas partial pressures of hydrogen and steam supplied to the hydrogen electrode are kept equivalent so that the cell performance can be fairly compared between the two operation modes when the same current is applied. It is found that the origin of the asymmetry is mostly from the hydrogen electrode; both activation and concentration overpotentials show asymmetric behavior particularly at high current densities. A numerical experiment is also conducted by deliberately changing parameters in the model. Asymmetry in the activation overpotential is found to be originated from the non-identical charge-transfer coefficients in the Butler–Volmer equation and also from the non-uniform gas concentration formed in the hydrogen electrode under current-biased conditions. On the other hand, asymmetry in the concentration overpotential is associated with the non-equimolar counter diffusion of hydrogen and steam caused by the effect of Knudsen diffusion. Therefore, enhancing gas transport in the hydrogen electrode and reducing the contribution of Knudsen diffusion are effective approaches to reduce asymmetry not only in the concentration overpotential but also in the activation overpotential.

Hydrogen as an energy vector is seen as a key for the energy transition. Recently, more than 30 countries have launched their hydrogen strategies and roadmaps. Hydrogen storage and transportation are challenging steps of the hydrogen economy since all available options have significant drawbacks. This paper evaluates a power-to-liquid hydrogen process; the system is “charged” with electricity from renewable sources to produce hydrogen via water electrolysis; the produced hydrogen gas is liquefied and stored at ambient pressure and cryogenic temperature. The purpose of this paper is to report the first evaluation results of a system including a polymer electrolyte membrane electrolyser and a hydrogen liquefier. The evaluation was conducted using exergy-based methods, i.e. exergetic, exergoeconomic and exergoenvironmental analyses. The process of hydrogen liquefaction was simulated with the aid of the Aspen Plus software. The exergetic efficiencies for the liquefaction process and for the electrolyser are 42% and 47%, respectively. While the total exergetic efficiency of the power-to-liquid hydrogen system amounts to 44%. The total exergy destruction for the liquefier amounts to 9.3 MW and for the polymer electrolyser membrane electrolyser amounts to 19.3 MW. The electrolyser followed by the hydrogen compressors were identified as the components with the highest exergy destruction values and investment costs, while the compressors and the recuperators account for the highest exergoenvironmental impact. The sensitivity analysis shows that the specific liquefaction cost of hydrogen strongly varies with the electricity price and the cost of green hydrogen.

The loading strategy of cocatalysts affects its activity exerting and atom utilization. Here, a novel strategy for loading precious metal (Pt) cocatalysts by means of ultrathin N-doped carbon layer is reported. The strategy is based on a pyrolysis process of predesigned N-containing polymers and Pt complexes on hard-template surface, during which Pt can be reduced by carbon from pyrolysis at high temperatures. Finally, the hollow TiO2 composite with stable and dispersed Pt on its inner surface was prepared. It shows an ultrahigh photocatalytic H2 production activity as high as 25.7 mmol h−1 g−1 with methanol as sacrificial regent, and displays an apparent quantum yield as 13.2%. The improved photocatalytic activity and stability can be attributed to the highly dispersed and ultrafine Pt nanoparticles, enhanced interaction between Pt-species and carbon support, fast photo-excited electron transport from the high graphitization degree of NC layers, ample oxygen vacancies/defects, as well as the manipulated local charge distribution of Pt/NC-layer configuration. Additionally, the universality of the proposed strategy was demonstrated by replacing metal sources (such as, Ru and Pd). This work presented a promising strategy for the design and development of novel photocatalysts, which shows a broad application prospect.

Abstract: In this study, children with vitamin B12 deficiency anemia (V-B12DA) and control subjects were evaluated for erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase enzyme activities, glutathione, malondialdehyde, serum total sialic acid, total antioxidant status, cobalt, chromium, copper, selenium, vanadium, zinc, iron, lead, magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium, chloride, phosphorus levels, and the associations of these variables were assessed. The study included 50 children with V-B12DA and 50 control subjects. It was found that the V-B12DA group was significantly lower than the control group, with regard to the mean±the standard error of the mean levels of cobalt (0.089±0.009; 0.058±0.0063 μmol/L, p12 (427.20±21.45; 157.08±3.96 pg/mL, p12DA, significantly linear correlations were observed between cobalt – vitamin B12 (r=0.334; p=0.025), vanadium – MCV (r=0.315; p=0.017), vitamin B12 – MCV (r=−0.297; p=0.026). The findings of the study indicated that the levels of cobalt, vanadium significantly associated with traditional vitamin B12-deficiency parameters. Vitamin B12 and MCV should be measured together with cobalt, vanadium for monitoring the vitamin B12 deficiency anemia.

Biogas, landfill gas, associated petroleum gas, and other tail gases accompanying various industrial processes are potential sources of hydrogen and carbon monoxide for solid oxide fuel cells via the reforming process. As these gases contain heavy hydrocarbons, fine-tuning of steam and carbon dioxide addition and specific temperature control are necessary to avoid carbon deposition during the reforming process. Numerical simulation plays a crucial role in designing miniaturized steam reforming reactors and optimal working conditions. All simulations of reforming processes must account for carbon deposition. The methods commonly seen in the open literature include Gibbs free energy minimization or parametric equations formalism. This paper utilizes Gaussian process regression as a tool for making predictions about which reforming parameters are suitable for carrying out this process without the danger of damaging the catalyst due to a carbon formation. Parametric equations formalism and Gibbs free energy minimization involve either the minimization of objective function or a search for roots of nonlinear functions. These tasks are sensitive to a choice of the starting points of the algorithm — wrong choice of starting points could lead to numerical instability. Unlike conventional methods, the Gaussian process regression approach bypasses the computation of equilibrium composition. It predicts carbon formation tendencies directly from the initial conditions which ensure stability.

Effective and robust electrocatalysts are mainly based on innovative materials and unique structures. Herein, we designed a flakelike cobalt phosphide-based catalyst supporting on NiCo2O4 nanorods array, which in-situ grew on the nickel foam (NF) current collector, referring as N–Co2P/NiCo2O4/NF electrode. By optimizing the microstructure and electronic structure through 3D hierarchy fabrication and nitrogen doping, the catalyst features with abundant electrochemical surface area, favorable surface wettability, excellent electron transport, as well as tailored d band center. Consequently, the as-prepared N–Co2P/NiCo2O4/NF electrode exhibits an impressive HER activity with a low overpotentials of 58 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a Tafel slop of 75 mV dec−1, as well as superior durability in alkaline medium. This work may provide a new pathway to effectively improve the hydrogen evolution performance of transition metal phosphides and to develop promising electrodes for practical electrocatalysis.

Aluminum (Al) powder is widely used in solid propellants. In particular, nano-Al has attracted extensive scholarly attention in the field of energetic materials due to its higher reactivity than micro-Al. However, the existence of aluminum oxide film on its surface reduces the heat release performance of the aluminum powder, which greatly limits its application. Hence, this paper used iron, a component of solid propellant, to coat micron-Al and nano-Al to improve the heat release efficiency and reactivity of Al powder. SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, XPS, and BET were used to investigate the morphological structure and properties of pure Al and Fe/Al composite fuels of different sizes. The results show that Fe was uniformly coated on the surface of Al powder. There was no reaction between Fe and Al, and Fe/Al composite fuels had a larger specific surface area than pure Al, which could better improve the reactivity of pure Al. Besides, the catalytic effects of pure Al and Fe/Al composite fuels of different sizes on ammonium perchlorate and ammonium nitrate were explored. The results show that the catalysis of pure Al powder could be greatly improved by coating Fe on the surface of Al powder. Especially, the micron-Fe/Al composite fuel had a higher catalytic effect than the pure nano-Al powder. Hence, Fe/Al composite fuels are expected to be widely used in solid propellants.

Sluggish kinetics of methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) even on precious Pt catalyst impede the large-scale commercialization of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) and water electrolysis technologies. Since both of MOR and alkaline HER are related to water dissociation reaction (WDR), it is reasonable to invite secondary active sites toward WDR to pair with Pt for boosted MOR and alkaline HER activity on Pt. Mo2C and Ni species are therefore employed to engineer NiPt–Mo2C active site pairs, which can be encapsulated in carbon cages, via an in-situ self-confinement strategy. Mass activity of Pt in NiPt–Mo2C@C toward HER is boosted to 11.3 A/mgPt, 33 times higher than that of Pt/C. Similarly, MOR catalytic activity of Pt in NiPt–Mo2C@C is also improved by 10.5 times and the DMFC maximum power density is hence improved by 9-fold. By considering the great stability, NiPt–Mo2C@C exhibits great practical application potential in DMFCs and water electrolysers.

Manganese oxide (MnO2) exhibits excellent activity for volatile organic compound oxidation. However, it is currently unknown whether lattice oxygen or adsorbed oxygen is more conducive to the progress of the catalytic reaction. In this study, novel hollow highly dispersed Pt/Copper modified-MnO2 catalysts were fabricated. Cu2+ was stabilized into the δ-MnO2 cladding substituting original K+, which produced lattice defects and enhance the content of adsorbed oxygen. The 2.03 wt% Pt Cu0.050-MnO2 catalyst exhibited the highest catalytic activity and excellent stability for toluene and benzene oxidation, with T100 = 160 °C under high space velocity (36,000 mL g−1 h−1). The excellent performance of catalytic oxidation of VOCs is attributed to the abundant adsorbed oxygen content, excellent low-temperature reducibility and the synergistic catalytic effect between the Pt nanoparticles and Cu0.050-MnO2. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism occurring on the catalysts.

Mg alloys are considered the most promising engineering materials because of their unique properties. However, the uncontrolled corrosion rate of these alloys limits their applications. Therefore, in this study, a micro-arc oxidation layer was used as a transition layer to “directly” grow a zinc-based metal-organic framework (MOF) composite coating on the surface of a Mg alloy (AZ91D). Herein, the two zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) coatings with different morphologies were separately prepared by homologous metal oxide induction and a one-step in-situ growth method. The superhydrophobic composite coating showed strong hydrophobicity and self-cleaning properties, which could prevent the penetration of water and corrosive ions (Cl−) into the surface of AZ91D. Electrochemical tests demonstrated that the super-hydrophobic composite coatings greatly enhanced the corrosion resistance of AZ91D, and the corrosion current density decreased from 10−5 to 10−9 A/cm2. These results indicate that the ZIF-8 coatings are beneficial for improving the hydrophobicity and enhancing the corrosion resistance of Mg alloys. Therefore, MOF composite coatings provide a new strategy that can be used to prepare multifunctional anticorrosion coatings on metal substrates.

Formation of super-hydrophobic and corrosion-resistant coatings can provide significant corrosion protection to magnesium alloys. However, it remains a grand challenge to produce such coatings for magnesium-lithium alloys due to their high chemical reactivity. Herein, a one-step hydrothermal processing was developed using a stearic-acid-based precursor medium, which enables the hydrothermal conversion and the formation of low surface energy materials concurrently to produce the super-hydrophobic and corrosion-resistant coating. The multiscale microstructures with nanoscale stacks and microscale spheres on the surface, as well as the through-thickness stearates, lead to the super-hydrophobicity and excellent corrosion resistance of the obtained coating.

Nb2O5 nanoparticles with an average particle size of 10 nm supported on a rhombic dodecahedral metal organic framework (MOF) were successfully synthesized by a facile one-pot hydrothermal reaction and subsequent calcination process. Experimental results demonstrated that the prepared catalyst drastically improved the hydrogen storage behavior of MgH2. 7 wt% Nb2O5@MOF doped MgH2 started to desorb hydrogen at 181.9 °C and 6.2 wt% hydrogen could be released within 2.6 min and 6.3 min at 275 °C and 250 °C, respectively. The fully dehydrogenated composite also displayed excellent hydrogenation by decreasing the onset absorption temperature to 25 °C and taking up 4.9 wt% and 6.5 wt% hydrogen within 6 min at 175 °C and 150 °C, respectively. Moreover, the corresponding activation energy was calculated to be 75.57 ± 4.16 kJ mol−1 for desorption reaction and 51.38 ± 1.09 kJ mol−1 for absorption reaction. After 20 cycles, 0.5 wt% hydrogen capacity was lost for the MgH2+7 wt% Nb2O5@MOF composite, much lower than 1.5 wt% of the MgH2+7 wt% Nb2O5 composite. However, the addition of Nb2O5@MOF had limited effect on reducing the dehydrogenation enthalpy of MgH2. Microstructure analysis revealed that Nb2O5 particles were uniformly distributed on surface of the MgH2 matrix and synergistically improved the hydrogen storage property of MgH2 with MOF.

Aiming to elucidate the hydrogen absorption/desorption cycling properties of Mg-based alloys with in-situ formed Mg2Ni and LaHx (x = 2, 3) nanocrystallines, the hydrogen storage cycle stability, hydriding/dehydriding cycling kinetics and thermodynamic stability of the experimental alloys have been investigated in detail. The results show that the Mg–Ni–La alloys exhibit improved hydrogen storage cycling properties and can remain storage hydrogen above 5.5 wt% after 200 cycles. With the increase of cycling numbers, the dehydrogenation rates of the experimental samples increase firstly and then gradually decrease, and eventually maintain relative stable state. Microstructure observation reveals that powders sintering and hydrogen decrepitation both exist during hydrogen absorption/desorption cycles due to repeated volume expansion and contraction. Meanwhile, the in-situ formed LaHx (x = 2, 3) and Mg2Ni nanocrystallines stabilize the microstructures of the particles and hinder the powders sintering. After 200 cycles, the average particle size of the experimental samples decreases and the specific surface area apparently increases, which leads to the decomposition temperatures of MgH2 and Mg2NiH4 slightly shift to lower temperatures. Moreover, Mg2Ni and LaHx (x = 2, 3) have been proven to be stable catalysts during long-term cycling, which can still uniformly distribute within the powders after 200 cycles.

Owing to the advantages of high operating voltage, environmental benignity, and low cost, potassium-based dual-ion batteries (KDIBs) have been considered as a potential candidate for large-scale energy storage. However, KDIBs generally suffer from poor cycling performance and unsatisfied capacity, and inactive components of conductive agents, binders, and current collector further lower their overall capacity. Herein, we prepare coral-like carbon nanowires (CCNWs) doped with nitrogen as a binder-free anode material for K+-ion storage, in which the unique coral-like porous nanostructure and amorphous/short-range-ordered composite feature are conducive to enhancing the structural stability, to facilitating the ion transfer and to boosting the full utilization of active sites during potassiation/de-potassiation process. As a result, the CCNW anode possesses a hybrid K+-storage mechanism of diffusive behavior and capacitive adsorption, and stably delivers a high capacity of 276 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1, good rate capability up to 2 A g-1, and long-term cycling stability with 93 % capacity retention after 2000 cycles at 1 A g-1. Further, assembling this CCNW anode with an environmentally benign expanded graphite (EG) cathode yields a proof-of-concept KDIB, which shows a high specific capacity of 134.4 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1, excellent rate capability of 106.5 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1, and long-term cycling stability over 1000 cycles without negligible capacity loss. This study provides a feasible approach to developing high-performance anodes for potassium-based energy storage devices.

Investigating the effects of different air CO2 concentrations on the carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) contents of straw and roots of different generations of crops is crucial to predict crop responses to elevated CO2. We performed a field experiment with open-top chambers (OTCs) and applied consecutively elevating CO2 concentrations (120 ppm and 160 ppm during the investigated 2018 rice and 2018–2019 winter wheat seasons, respectively, with a consecutive increase of 40 ppm per year beginning from the first winter wheat–rice rotation season in November 2015) and a continuously elevated CO2 concentration of 200 ppm during each season. The results indicated that elevated CO2 concentrations generally increased the root C content of both rice and winter wheat. The most obvious effects between the treatments appeared in the crops grown from seeds harvested in the OTCs each season. An elevated CO2 concentration increased the rice root N content, with more obvious effects over multiple generations that had been planted in the OTCs for three or four growing seasons than on a single generation that was planted in the OTCs for only one growing season. An elevated CO2 concentration also induced an increase in the ratio of C to N (C/N) in the roots of rice and in the straw and roots of winter wheat. The C content of the rice and winter wheat roots increased significantly with increasing root N content. The enhancement effect of an elevated CO2 concentration on the C and N content and the C/N ratios in rice and winter wheat is more significant for multiple generations than for one generation.

Co–N–C is a promising oxygen electrochemical catalyst due to its high stability and good durability. However, due to the limited adsorption ability improvement for oxygen-containing intermediates, it usually exhibits inadequate catalytic activity with 2-electron pathway and high selectivity of hydrogen peroxide. Herein, the adsorption of Co–N–C to these intermediates is modulated by constructing heterostructures using transition metals and their derivatives based on d-band theory. The heterostructured nanobelts with MoC core and pomegranate-like carbon shell consisting of Co nanoparticles and N dopant (MoC/Co–N–C) are engineered to successfully modulate the d band center of active Co–N–C sites, resulting in a remarkably enhanced electrocatalysis performance. The optimally performing MoC/Co–N–C exhibits outstanding bi-catalytic activity and stability for the oxygen electrochemistry, featuring a high wave-half potential of 0.865 V for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and low overpotential of 370 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at 10 mA cm−2. The zinc air batteries with the MoC/Co–N–C catalyst demonstrate a large power density of 180 mW cm−2 and a long cycling lifespan (2000 cycles). The density functional theory calculations with Hubbard correction (DFT + U) reveal the electron transferring from Co to Mo atoms that effectively modulate the d band center of the active Co sites and achieve optimum adsorption ability with “single site double adsorption” mode.

Plasma methods are given significant attention in the context of conditioning the producer gas derived from biomass gasification. The goal of this work is to present the impact of hydrogen on the other producer gas compounds during microwave plasma valorization. These compounds include main producer gas components (CO, CO2, CH4, N2) and minor impurities (tar compounds, H2S and NH3). The results prove a beneficial impact of hydrogen addition on the conversion of CH4 and toluene, increasing it from ca. 68%–95% and ca. 97%–100%, respectively. Additionally, the presence of hydrogen changes the distribution of the products, inhibiting soot and aromatics production and promoting C2 compounds. In the case of CO2, the conversion increases from ca. 18%–63% when compared to nitrogen plasma, with CO being the resulting product. The article presents the results of research on the optimization of the supply of maize plants with the main nutrients under different agrochemical loads in the Forest-Steppe. The aim of the research was to establish the effect of different doses of mineral fertilizers and by-products of the predecessor as fertilizers on the supply of plants with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and corn yield. The research was carried out during 2016-2019 on dark gray wooded soil of the Forest-Steppe with the use of field, chemical, calculation-weight and mathematical-statistical methods. It were found that long-term growing of agricultural crops for 30 years under different agrochemical loading in crop rotation on dark gray wooded soil of the Forest-Steppe led to the creation of different agrochemical backgrounds. According to the results of soil and plant diagnostics, it has been established that nitrogen is the limiting nutrient for growing corn. In the variants with application of increased (N180P120K180) and high (N240P120K240) norms of mineral fertilizers against the background of by-products of the predecessor (winter wheat straw), where the highest yield of corn is formed - 11.21-12.10 t / ha, mobile phosphorus content 20 cm layer of soil was very high, mobile potassium - high, easily hydrolyzed nitrogen - very low. In these variants, maize plants in stages BBCH 16, 19 and 65 accumulated the optimal amount of nitrogen, and the content of phosphorus and potassium showed optimal and high supply during the growing season for the application of mineral fertilizers in the norms above N60P45K60.According to the results of correlation and regression analysis, the decisive role of nitrogen and potassium in the formation of corn productivity was confirmed. Mathematical models have been constructed that make it possible to predict the level of maize yield depending on the content of chemical elements in the soil and plants at the early stages of BBCH development.

Self-assembled porous alumina structures (por Al2O3) were prepared by two-step anodization process and characterized by scanning electron microscopy.Filling quasi one-dimensional parallel nanochannels of por Al2O3 host matrixwith iodine guest substance by vapor phase adsorption method resulted inthe formation of I/por Al2O3 nanocomposite. Electrical properties of thesenanocomposite samples were studied by alternating-current measurements ata frequency of 1 kHz. Ellipsometric measurements were carried out in thespectral range 350–1000 nm. Structural transition of iodine species from thechain structures to molecular iodine was found in I/por Al2O3 nanocompositeat ∼ 70 ◦C.

The chip study can be the simile to the biopsy in the machining process, as it exposes physical phenomena that are generated in the machining process (heat transfer, hardening, phase changes, heat treatments, etc.). These physical phenomena are directly influenced by the cutting parameters applied to the process (feed, cutting speed, and depth). A chip analysis procedure is proposed to estimate some of the physical phenomena generated in the micro-end-milling in a conventional CNC machine on 7075 aluminium and Ti-6Al-4 V titanium alloys. The procedure is composed of hardness tests, metallography, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and infrared thermography. A softened chip is observed in the Ti-6Al-4 V titanium a hardened one in 7075 aluminium alloy. The chip approach evaluation evidences a great variation regarded to thermal characteristics between micro-machining and meso-machining focused on the scale of the removed layer thickness.

An 8-week feeding trial investigated the optimum dietary vitamin K3 requirements of largemouth bass. A total of 600 healthy fish (12.96 ± 0.07 g) were fed diets containing varying levels of vitamin K3 at 0.78 (K0), 5.80 (K5), 10.82 (K10), 15.84 (K15), and 20.85 (K20) mg/kg with four replicates per level. Results showed that dietary vitamin K3 enhanced growth, with weight gain rate and specific growth rate in K15 trials significantly higher than K0 trials (P 0.05). However, the supplementation of vitamin K3 significantly contributed to calcium accumulation in muscle tissues and vertebrae (P 0.05). The antioxidant capacity was improved with the addition of vitamin K3, which was inconsistent with the changes in malondialdehyde and MK-4 (a form of menaquinone) within liver and serum, suggesting that the toxicity of excessive artificial vitamin K3 may account for this difference. Using regression analysis, the appropriate dietary vitamin K3 levels within a largemouth bass diet was determined to be in the range of 9.93–15.22 mg/kg, which will provide a reference for the preparation of vitamin premix and artificial diet for largemouth bass.

In an effort for further improvement of LSCF hollow fiber membrane properties in oxygen purification application, this work studied the use of polyethylene glycol (PEG) with different molecular weight of 2000, 3400 and 6000 Da as a pore former. A well-prepared hollow fiber membrane was successfully fabricated via extrusion followed by a sintering method. The results showed that the addition of PEG increased the viscosity of the dope suspension and formed a constant asymmetric pore configuration of the membrane after sintering at 1250 °C. The increasing molecular weight of PEG also leads to a decrease in the mechanical strength of the membranes, indicating that finger-like pores were sacrificed by forming irregular pores. The gas tightness was also examined under room temperature which showed that membrane with PEG 3400 achieved the best tightness with the nitrogen permeability of 3.55 × 10−5 mol·m−2·s−1·Pa−1. The oxygen permeation of the membranes was also influenced by the addition of PEG, where the highest oxygen permeation flux of 6.07 × 10−8 mol·cm−2·s−1 was obtained using a hollow fiber membrane with PEG 3400 due to the existence of the lowest dense layer thickness.

RE-containing magnesium alloys were prepared via molten-salt-mediated magnesiothermic reduction by using RE2O3 (RE=Y, Nd and Gd) and Mg metal as raw materials. The thermomechanical analysis of the magnesiothermic reduction reactions in molten salt was investigated. Then the molten-salt-mediated magnesiothermic reduction process was studied from three different perspectives. After that, the RE-containing magnesium alloy was characterized by using chemical analysis, XRD analysis and SEM analysis. The magnesiothermic reduction was a liquid-liquid reaction with relatively weak driving force. During the melting process and the magnesiothermic reduction process, magnesium metal and the obtained alloy went up and down as a whole in molten salt, which improved the process safety without introducing chloride inclusions. Meanwhile, the hydrolysis of the RECl3-containing molten salt occurred at elevated temperature, which severely impeded the magnesiothermic reduction process. After the magnesiothermic reduction at 750 °C for 2.0 h, the content of RE and the common impurity elements in the obtained RE-containing alloy met the both requirements of the commercial WE43A and WE43B.

Ultrasonic treatment has great contributions on modifying the morphology, dimension and distribution of constituent phases during solidification, which serve as dominate factors influencing the hydrogen storage performance of Mg-based alloys. In this research, ultrasonic treatment is utilized as a novel method to enhance the de-/hydriding properties of Mg-2Ni (at.%) alloy. Due to ultrasonic treatment, the microstructure of as-cast alloy is significantly refined and homogenized. Ascribing to the increased eutectic boundaries and shortened distance inside α-Mg for hydrogen atoms diffusion, the hydrogen uptake capacities and isothermal de-/hydriding rates improve effectively, especially at lower temperature. The peak desorption temperature reduces from 392.99 °C to 345.56 °C, and the dehydriding activation energy decreases from 101.93 kJ mol−1 to 88.65 kJ mol−1. Weakened hysteresis of plateau pressures and slightly optimized thermodynamics are determined from the pressure-composition isotherms. Owing to the refined primary Mg, a larger amount of hydrogen with the higher hydriding proportion is absorbed in the first stage when hydrides nucleate in eutectic region and grow on primary Mg periphery subsequently before MgH2 colonies impinging, resulting in the enhancement of hydrogenation rates and capacities.

Statement of problem: Changing the internal design of a metal framework may decrease the manufacturing time, the weight of the restoration, and the amount of alloy powder used, as well as simplify the fabrication process. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of framework internal design changes on the mechanical properties of cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) specimens manufactured by using direct metal laser sintering (DMLS). Material and methods: Dumbbell-shaped test specimens were designed as per the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 22674(E) standard by using a 3-dimensional software program. A total of 70 dumbbell-shaped specimens were prepared by using Co-Cr alloy powder and DMLS (n=10). The control group specimens were solid with the internal completely filled. For the test groups, the internal design of the dumbbell-shaped specimens was modified. Leaving the outer shell thickness of the specimens at 0.5 mm for all test groups, 6 different internal designs were created, and the specimens were weighed. The tensile strength test was used to evaluate the mean peak strength, elastic modulus, and percentage elongation of the specimens. One-way ANOVA followed by the Dunnett T3 test was used for statistical analysis (α=.05). Results: A statistically significant difference was found among the groups in terms of bar weight and peak strength (P.05). Conclusions: Decreasing the weight of the frameworks by changing the internal design of the specimens also decreased the peak strength. However, it did not affect the elastic modulus or the percentage of elongation.

In the present study, the unique three-dimensional graphene coated nickel (Ni/C) foam reinforced silicon carbide (Ni/C@SiC) composites were first obtained via the precursor impregnation and pyrolysis (PIP) processes. The microstructure images indicated that the SiC fillers were successfully prepared in the skeleton pores of the Ni/C foam. The influence of the PIP cycles on the microwave absorption performances was researched, and the results indicated that after the primary PIP process, Ni/C@SiC–I possessed the optimal microwave absorbing performance with a minimum reflection loss(RL) of −25.87 dB at 5.28 GHz and 5.00 mm. Besides, the RL values could be below −10.00 dB from 5.88 GHz to 7.74 GHz when the corresponding matching thickness was 3.85 mm. However, the microwave absorption properties of Ni/C@SiC-II and Ni/C@SiC-III were tremendously degraded as the PIP times increased. At last, the electromagnetic parameter, dielectric loss, attenuation constant as well as impedance matching coefficient were further investigated to analyze the absorbing mechanism, which opened a new path for the certain scientific evaluation of the absorbing materials and had extremely important to the defence technology.

Natural fish scales demonstrate outstanding mechanical efficiency owing to their elaborate architectures and thereby may serve as ideal prototypes for the architectural design of man-made materials. Here bioinspired magnesium composites with fish-scale-like orthogonal plywood and double-Bouligand architectures were developed by pressureless infiltration of a magnesium melt into the woven contextures of continuous titanium fibers. The composites exhibit enhanced strength and work-hardening ability compared to those estimated from a simple mixture of their constituents at ambient to elevated temperatures. In particular, the double-Bouligand architecture can effectively deflect cracking paths, alleviate strain localization, and adaptively reorient titanium fibers within the magnesium matrix during the deformation of the composite, representing a successful implementation of the property-optimizing mechanisms in fish scales. The strength of the composites, specifically the effect of their bioinspired architectures, was interpreted based on the adaptation of classical laminate theory. This study may offer a feasible approach for developing new bioinspired metal-matrix composites with improved performance and provide theoretical guidance for their architectural designs.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have caused a serious threat to the atmosphere and human health. Therefore, it is of great significance to exploit effective catalytic materials for the safe and effective catalytic elimination of VOCs. Herein, Ag-MnOx-ACF composite catalysts were constructed via a two-step impregnation strategy and used for catalytic toluene degradation. A remarkable low-temperature catalytic activity (T100 = 50℃), excellent stability, as well as CO2 selectivity (80%) were achieved over the Ag-MnOx-ACF catalyst. A series of characterizations indicated that the unique manganese defects structure of birnessite phase manganese oxide played an essential role for toluene oxidation, which was conducive to generating surface adsorbed oxygen. The higher ratio of Mn3+/Mn4+, abundant surface adsorbed oxygen and highly dispersed Ag species were determined to significantly facilitate toluene degradation. The mechanism of efficient degradation of toluene at low temperature was proposed. O3 and H2O molecules were activated via surface hydroxyl and Mn defects on Ag-MnOx-ACF to produce sufficient •OH, enhancing the degradation performance of toluene. We provide a new idea for the catalytic oxidation of benzene VOCs at low even room temperatures.

Defect-engineered carbon materials have been emerged as promising electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in metal-air batteries. Developing a facile strategy for the preparation of highly active nanocarbon electrocatalysts remains challenging. Herein, a low-cost and simple route is developed to synthesize defective graphene by pyrolyzing the mixture of glucose and carbon nitride. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the graphene formation is ascribed to two-dimensional layered feature of carbon nitride, and high compatibility of carbon nitride/glucose systems. Structural measurements suggest that the graphene possesses rich edge and topological defects. The graphene catalyst exhibits higher power density than commercial Pt/C catalyst in a primary Zn-air battery. Combining experimental results and theoretical thermodynamic analysis, it is identified that graphitic nitrogen-modified topological defects at carbon framework edges are responsible for the decent ORR performance. The strategy presented in this work can be can be scaled up readily to fabricate defective carbon materials.

The effects of addition of minor amount of (0.5 wt.%) antimony (Sb) or gadolinium (Gd) and combined addition of Sb and Gd (0.5 wt.%, respectively) on the hot tearing susceptibility (HTS) of Mg-5Al-3Ca alloy were investigated experimentally using a “T-shaped” hot tearing measuring system. Various solidification parameters of the alloys were measured and calculated through thermal analysis experiments. The microstructure, grain size, and morphology of the crack zone were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction, and the crystal phases of the alloys were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The results showed that the addition of 0.5 wt.% Gd resulted in the increase in the vulnerable temperature range (Tv) and reduced the eutectic structure content that could participate in feeding, thereby improving the HTS of the alloy. However, addition of 0.5 wt.% Sb or combined addition of Gd and Sb (0.5 wt.%, respectively) to the Mg-5Al-3Ca alloy shortened the Tv and improved the skeleton strength of the alloy, thereby reducing HTS. Moreover, significantly refined structure of Mg-5Al-3Ca-0.5Gd-0.5Sb alloy improved the feeding ability of the eutectic structure, thus the alloy exhibited the lowest HTS.

The pulsed current has been proposed to achieve fast charging and extend the lifetime of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. However, the optimal condition of the pulsed current is still inconclusive in previous studies. This article experimentally investigated the effect of the low-frequency positive pulsed current (PPC) charging on the lifetime and charging performance of Li-ion batteries. A two-stage degradation model of Li-ion batteries is developed to determine the inhibitory effect of the PPC on degradation mechanisms at different aging stages. Moreover, the changes in the internal resistance (IR) and the incremental capacity (IC) curve are provided to thoroughly explore the effects of the PPC on the degradation of Li-ion batteries. Compared with the traditional constant current (CC) charging, the lifetime, maximum rising temperature, and energy efficiency of the Li-ion batteries that were cycled by the PPC charging are improved by 81.6%, 60.5%, and 9.1%, respectively, after 1000 cycles. Therefore, low-frequency PPC charging should be considered as a promising charging strategy for Li-ion batteries.

The Ru-catalyzed carbonylation of alkenes with CO2 as a C1 surrogate and imidazole chlorides as the promotor is investigated by a combination of computational and experimental study. The conversion rate of CO2 to CO is positively correlated with the efficiency of both hydroesterification and hydroformylation, which is found facilitated in the presence of chloride additives with a decreasing order of BmimCl ∼ B3MimCl > BmmimCl ∼ LiCl. Taking the hydroesterification with MeOH as a representative example, BmimCl bearing C–H functionality at the C2 site of the cation assists the reduction of CO2 to CO as a hydrogen donor medium, with the anion and cation acting in a synergistic fashion. Subsequent insertion of CO2 into the formed Ru–H bond with the assistance of chloride anion produces the Ru–COOH species, which ultimately accelerates the activation of CO2.

A soil column test was carried out to investigate the mechanism of multicomponent landfill gas transport in loess. Four gas components, namely methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), oxygen (O2) and nitrogen (N2), were considered. Based on the dusty-gas model and mass balance equation, a one-dimensional transient model for multicomponent gas transport in landfill layered cover soils was then developed. Methane oxidation in the soil is also considered in the model. The numerical model was solved by the finite-element method-based program Comsol Multiphysics v5.1. The numerical results agree well with those observed from the soil column tests. The parameter analysis shows that ordinary diffusion plays an important role in the transport of multicomponent gases. For methane and carbon dioxide, ordinary diffusion contributes to 97% of the total transport flux in the shallow zone. The effect of ordinary diffusion decreases with the increase in the depth. Advection contributes to 37% of the flux at the bottom of the cover soil. The effect of Knudsen diffusion is relatively weak, which only contributes 0.5–12% to the total flux. This is due to the relatively high gas permeability of the soil. The contribution of advection is comparable to that of diffusion when the gas permeability increases up to 3 × 10−13 m2. The maximum methane oxidation rate is found to increase by a factor of 1.8, when influent flux increases from 1 × 10−5 to 1 × 10−4 (mol/m2)/s. The numerical solution can be used for the analysis of multicomponent landfill gas transport in the soils and the design of landfill cover systems with respect to gas pollution control.

Energy conversion technologies like fuel cells and metal-air batteries require oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts with low cost and high catalytic activity. Herein, N-doped carbon spheres (N-CS) with rich micropore structure have been synthesized by a facile two-step method, which includes the polymerization of pyrrole and formaldehyde and followed by a facile pyrolysis process. During the preparation, zinc chloride (ZnCl2) was utilized as a catalyst to promote polymerization and provide a hypersaline environment. In addition, the morphology, defect content and activity area of the resultant N-CS catalysts could be regulated by controlling the content of ZnCl2. The optimum N-CS-1 catalyst demonstrated much better catalytic activity and durability towards ORR in alkaline conditions than commercial 20 wt% Pt/C catalysts, of which the half-wave potential reached 0.844 V vs. RHE. When applied in the Zn-air batteries as cathode catalysts, N-CS-1 showed a maximum power density of 175 mW cm-2 and long-term discharging stability of over 150 h at 10 mA cm-2, which outperformed 20 wt% Pt/C. The excellent performance could be due to its ultrahigh specific surface area of 1757 m2 g-1 and rich micropore channels structure. Meanwhile, this work provides an efficient method to synthesize an ultrahigh surface porous carbon material, especially for catalyst application.

Activated red mud (RM) has been proved to be a promising base material for the selective catalysis reduction (SCR) of NOx. The inherent low reducibility and acidity limited its low–temperature activity. In this work, molybdenum oxide, tungsten oxide, and cerium oxide were used to reconfigure the redox sites and acid sites of red mud based catalyst. When activated red mud was reconfigured by cerium-tungsten oxide (Ce–W@RM), the NOx conversion kept above 90% at 219–480 °C. The existence of Ce3+/Ce4+ redox electron pairs provided more surface adsorbed oxygen (Oα) and served as a redox cycle. Positive interactions between Ce, W species and Fe oxide in red mud occurred, which led to the formation of unsaturated chemical bond and promoted the activation of adsorbed NH3 species. WO3 and Ce2(WO4)3 (formed by solid–state reaction between Ce and W species) could provide more Bronsted acid sites (W–O modes of WO3, W O or W–O–W modes of Ce2(WO4)3). CeO2 species could provide more Lewis acid sites. The Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L-H) routes and Eley-Rideal (E-R) routes occurred in the low-temperature SCR reaction on the Ce–W@RM surface. NH4+ species on Bronsted acid sites, NH3 species on Lewis acid sites, bidentate nitrate and bridging nitrate species were key active intermediates species.

Molten salt has been widely used in latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) system, which can be incorporated into hybrid photovoltaic/thermal solar system to accommodate the built environment. Solar salt (60 wt.% NaNO3 and 40 wt.% KNO3) was employed as the phase change materials (PCMs) in this study, and both aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanopowder and metal foam were used to improve the properties of pure solar salt. The synthesis of the salt/metal foam composites seeded with Al2O3 nanopowder were performed with the two-step and impregnation methods, and the composite PCMs were characterized morphologically and thermally. Then pure solar salt, the salt/2 wt.% Al2O3 nanopowder and salt/copper foam composite seeded with 2 wt.% Al2O3 nanopowder were encapsulated in a pilot test rig, respectively, where a heater of 380.0 W was located in the center of the LHTES unit. The charging and discharging processes of the LHTES unit were conducted extensively, whereas the heating temperatures were controlled at 240 °C, 260 °C and 280 °C respectively. Temperature evolutions at radial, angular and axial positions were recorded, and the time-durations and volumetric mean powers during the charging and discharging processes were obtained and calculated subsequently. The results show that physical bonding between Al2O3 nanopowder and nitrate molecule has been formed from the morphological pictures together with XRD and FTIR curves. Slight changes are found between the melting/freezing phase change temperatures of the salt/metal foam composites seeded with Al2O3 nanopowder and those of pure solar salt, and the specific heats of the salt/Al2O3 nanopowder composite slightly increase with the addition of Al2O3 nanopowder. The time-duration of the charging process for the salt/copper foam composite seeded with Al2O3 nanopowder at the heating temperature of 240 °C can be reduced by about 74.0%, compared to that of pure solar salt, indicating that the heat transfer characteristics of the LHTES unit encapsulated with the salt/copper foam composite seeded with Al2O3 nanopowder can be enhanced significantly. Consequently, the mean volumetric powers of the charging process were distinctly enhanced, e.g., the volumetric mean power of heat storage can reach 110.76 kW/m3, compared to 31.94 kW/m3 of pure solar salt. However, the additive has little effect on the volumetric mean power of heat retrieval because of the domination of natural air cooling.

Advanced safe battery storage systems with health prognostic performance are vital for electric vehicles. Various faults of lithium-ion batteries are usually undetectable in their early stage due to their concealment and graduality. This paper presents a real-time fault diagnosis and isolation scheme for real-scenario batteries using the normalized discrete wavelet decomposition. The early frequency-domain features of the fault signals are extracted utilizing the high-frequency detail wavelet components, and a multi-level fault prognosis strategy is developed considering complex charging/driving characteristics under real-vehicle operating conditions. The verification results, implemented on loose wire connection batteries and real-scenario thermal runaway batteries, demonstrate that the proposed method can accurately extract and locate the hidden fault signals even under small magnitudes, as well as effectively detecting and isolating battery faults before thermal runaway. Furthermore, significant reliability and stability of the proposed method are verified on more real-vehicle operation data, enabling online monitorable and traceable of battery faults before triggering thermal runaway, safeguarding drivers and passengers in real-world vehicular operation.

The interactions between a plate-like precipitate and two twin boundaries (TBs) ( { 10 1 ¯ 2 } , { 11 2 ¯ 1 } ) in magnesium alloys are studied using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The precipitate is not sheared by { 10 1 ¯ 2 } TB, but sheared by { 11 2 ¯ 1 } TB. Shearing on the (110) plane is the predominant deformation mode in the sheared precipitate. Then, the blocking effects of precipitates with different sizes are studied for { 11 2 ¯ 1 } twinning. All the precipitates show a blocking effect on { 11 2 ¯ 1 } twinning although they are sheared, while the blocking effects of precipitates with different sizes are different. The blocking effect increases significantly with the increasing precipitate length (in-plane size along TB) and thickness, whereas changes weakly as the precipitate width changes. Based on the revealed interaction mechanisms, a critical twin shear is calculated theoretically by the Eshelby solutions to determine which TB is able to shear the precipitate. In addition, an analytical hardening model of sheared precipitates is proposed by analyzing the force equilibrium during TB-precipitate interactions. This model indicates that the blocking effect depends solely on the area fraction of the precipitate cross-section, and shows good agreement with the current MD simulations. Finally, the blocking effects of plate-like precipitates on the { 10 1 ¯ 2 } twinning (non-sheared precipitate), { 11 2 ¯ 1 } twinning (sheared precipitate) and basal dislocations (non-sheared precipitate) are compared together. Results show that the blocking effect on { 11 2 ¯ 1 } twinning is stronger than that on { 10 1 ¯ 2 } twinning, while the effect on basal dislocations is weakest. The precipitate-TB interaction mechanisms and precipitation hardening models revealed in this work are of great significance for improving the mechanical property of magnesium alloys by designing microstructure.

A novel strategy was developed to fabricate FeNx-doped carbon quantum dots (Fe-N-CQDs) to detect Cu2+ ions selectively as a fluorescence probe. The Fe-N-CQDs were synthesized by an efficient electrolysis of a carbon cloth electrode, which was coated with monoatomic iron-anchored nitrogen-doped carbon (Fe-N-C). The obtained Fe-N-CQDs emitted blue fluorescence and possessed a quantum yield (QY) of 7.5%. An extremely wide linear relationship between the Cu2+ concentration and the fluorescence intensity was obtained in the range from 100 nM to 1000 nM (R2 = 0.997), and the detection limit was calculated as 59 nM. Moreover, the Fe-N-CQDs demonstrated wide range pH compatibility between 2 and 13 due to the coordination between pyridine nitrogen and Fe3+, which dramatically reduced the affection of the protonation and deprotonation process between H+ and Fe-N-CQDs. It is notable that the Fe-N-CQDs exhibited a rapid response in Cu2+ detection, where stable quenching can be completed in 7 s. The mechanism of excellent selective detection of Cu2+ was revealed by energy level simulation that the LUMO level of Fe-N-CQDs (−4.37 eV) was close to the redox potential of Cu2+, thus facilitating the electron transport from Fe-N-CQDs to Cu2+.
