The synthesis of a novel polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane functionalized with eight rigid and directional terpyridine-based arms (Ter-POSS) was successfully achieved via a Sonogashira reaction. The POSS based ligand was extensively characterized using different techniques including 1H, 13C and 29Si NMR as well as UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. The assembly of these nano-caged units in the presence of different transition metal ions (Fe2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+) as well as of a cation from the lanthanides (Eu3+) was investigated using absorption and emission spectroscopies. The final materials display an evident emission in different regions of the visible spectrum as a function of the cation employed. Additional insights into the structural organization of Ter-POSS in the presence of metal cations were obtained via molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics simulations. The polymeric material resulting from the complexation with europium displays a white light emission ascribed to the presence of combined contributions from the blue, green and red regions. The final self-assembled organizations display an increased quantum yield with the highest value (29.6%) obtained in the presence of Zn2+. Moreover, the white-light emitting europium-based nanostructure exhibits one of the highest quantum yields reported in the literature for similar solids.

We study by scanning thermal microscopy the nanoscale thermal conductance of films (40-400 nm thick) of [1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (BTBT) and 2,7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (C8-BTBT-C8). We demonstrate that the out-of-plane thermal conductivity is significant along the interlayer direction, larger for BTBT (0.63 ± 0.12 W m-1 K-1) compared to C8-BTBT-C8 (0.25 ± 0.13 W m-1 K-1). These results are supported by molecular dynamics calculations (approach to equilibrium molecular dynamics method) performed on the corresponding molecular crystals. The calculations point to significant thermal conductivity (3D-like) values along the 3 crystalline directions, with anisotropy factors between the crystalline directions below 1.8 for BTBT and below 2.8 for C8-BTBT-C8, in deep contrast with the charge transport properties featuring a two-dimensional character for these materials. In agreement with the experiments, the calculations yield larger values in BTBT compared to C8-BTBT-C8 (0.6-1.3 W m-1 K-1versus 0.3-0.7 W m-1 K-1, respectively). The weak thickness dependence of the nanoscale thermal resistance is in agreement with a simple analytical model. This journal is, M. G., D. G., S. L. and D. Peptoids are attractive substitutes for peptides in several research areas, especially when they adopt a helical structure. The chain-size evolution of the secondary structure of the widely studied (S)-N-1-phenylethyl peptoids is here analyzed by means of the ion mobility mass spectrometry technique increasingly used as a powerful analytical tool and is further supported by theoretical modeling. We conclude that the helical shape of the peptoids prevailing in solution is lost in the gas phase by the need to screen the positive charge borne by the peptoid even though the collisional cross sections are close to the values expected for helical systems. We further illustrate that trend line analyses predicting molecular shapes from fits of the size evolution of cross sections can be very misleading since they critically depend on the range of polymerization degrees under study.

Mass spectrometric techniques and more particularly collision-induced dissociation (CID) experiments represent a powerful method for the determination of the primary sequence of (bio)molecules. However, the knowledge of the ion fragmentation patterns say the dissociation reaction mechanisms is a prerequisite to reconstitute the sequence based on fragment ions. Previous papers proposed that protonated peptoids dissociate following an oxazolone-ring mechanism starting from the O-protonation species and leading to high mass Y sequence ions. Here we revisit this backbone cleavage mechanism by performing CID and ion mobility experiments, together with computational chemistry, on tailor-made peptoids. We demonstrated that the B/Y cleavages of collisionally activated O-protonated peptoids must involve the amide nitrogen protonated structures as the dissociating species, mimicking the CID behavior of protonated peptides. Upon the nucleophilic attack of the oxygen atom of the N-terminal adjacent carbonyl group on the carbonyl carbon atom of the protonated amide, the peptoid ions directly dissociate to form an ion-neutral complex associating an oxazolone ion to the neutral truncated peptoid residue. Dissociation of the ion/neutral complex predominantly produces Y ions due to the high proton affinity of the secondary amide function characteristic of truncated peptoids. Whereas the production of Yx ions from acetylated peptoids also involves the B/Y pathway, the observation of abundant Yx ions from non-acetylated peptoid ions is shown in the present study to arise from an A1-Yx mechanism. The consecutive and competitive characters of the A1-Yx and the B/Y mechanisms are also investigated by drift time-aligned CID experiments.

Despite offering robust mechanical properties, polymer networks suffer from a lack of recyclability, reshaping, and healability. Designing stiff and remendable polymer networks that can repair under mild conditions remains a challenge to extend their field of applications. Herein, we describe a simple approach to design a nonisocyanate-based polyurethane network featuring multiresponsiveness (to humidity and temperature) and outstanding healing properties, as obtained by combining iminoboronate and boroxine chemistry. In spite of the presence of abundant dynamic bonds, the network has a high stiffness (Young's modulus of 551 MPa) and tensile strength (11 MPa). C?N iminoboronate and B-O boroxine exchange reactions at high temperature enable efficient network recycling over multiple cycles without compromising its properties. Owing to these features, 3D objects could be designed and printed. Peptoids constitute an emergent class of synthetic biocompatible macromolecules that are best described as polymers of N-substituted glycines. Peptides and peptoids are regioisomers with the side chains appended in peptoids to the nitrogen atoms rather than to the α-carbon atoms as in peptides. Peptide sequencing now takes great advantage of collision-induced dissociation experiments, based on the elucidation of the decomposition pathways of protonated peptides. In contrast, data on peptoid ion decompositions are to date scarcely present in the literature. Upon CID, protonated peptoids were recently shown to mostly dissociate by cleavages at the backbone amide bonds yielding B- and Y-fragment ions. In addition, the loss of the side-chain group and/or the formation of the side-chain fragment ion are common reactions for peptoids containing protonated N-α-aromatic side chain. In the present paper, we submitted protonated tailor-made peptoids to (energy-resolved) collision-induced dissociation experiments to investigate the side-chain loss reaction mechanisms. We also used orthogonal methods, such as quantum chemistry, ion mobility spectrometry and infrared photodissociation spectroscopy to establish the structures of the fragment ions. We ended up with different mechanistic scenarios consistent with the nature of the fragment ions and the kinetic energy dependence of decomposition reactions. Our mechanistic proposals associate the proton mobile model, proton bound dimer intermediacy and concerted rearrangement reactions.

The synthesis and photophysical study of two dinuclear copper(I) complexes bearing a 2-(1H-imidazol-2-yl)pyrimidine bridging ligand are described. The tetrahedral coordination sphere of each copper center is completed through the use of a bulky bis(phosphine) ligand, either DPEphos or Xantphos. Temperature-dependent photophysical studies demonstrated emission through a combination of phosphorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence for both complexes, and an intense emission (ΦPL = 46%) was observed for a crystalline sample of one of the complexes reported. The photophysics of these two complexes is very sensitive to the environment. Two pseudopolymorphs of one of the dinuclear complexes were isolated, with distinct photophysics. The emission color of the crystals can be changed by grinding, and the differences in their photophysics before and after grinding are discussed. Postprint

The charge transport–limiting factors in conjugated polymers without single-bond linkages in the backbone have been identified., We investigate the charge transport physics of a previously unidentified class of electron-deficient conjugated polymers that do not contain any single bonds linking monomer units along the backbone but only double-bond linkages. Such polymers would be expected to behave as rigid rods, but little is known about their actual chain conformations and electronic structure. Here, we present a detailed study of the structural and charge transport properties of a family of four such polymers. By adopting a copolymer design, we achieve high electron mobilities up to 0.5 cm2 V−1 s−1. Field-induced electron spin resonance measurements of charge dynamics provide evidence for relatively slow hopping over, however, long distances. Our work provides important insights into the factors that limit charge transport in this unique class of polymers and allows us to identify molecular design strategies for achieving even higher levels of performance.

The two-dimensional shape information yielded by ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS), usually reported as collision cross section (CCS), is often correlated to the underlying three-dimensional structures of the ions through computational chemistry. Here, we used theoretical approaches based on molecular mechanics (MM), molecular dynamics (MD), and density functional theory (DFT) to elucidate the structures of sodiated poly(ethoxy phosphate) polymer ions at different degrees of polymerization (DP) for three different charge states (1+, 2+, and 3+) by comparing computational results to experimentally obtained CCS values. From the calculated structures, we extract several key interaction distances which merge in clusters for all screened charge states and DPs, independent of the three-dimensional structures and the polymer ion structural rearrangements. These distances were also used to extract the minimum coordination numbers in poly(ethoxy phosphate) and to describe the preferred coordination geometries. When sodiated and protonated polymer ions are compared, the experimental CCS evolutions differ at small DP values and merge at higher DPs. In the field of polymer characterization, the use of ion mobility mass spectrometry (IMMS) remains mainly devoted to the temporal separation of cationized oligomers according to their charge states, molecular masses and macromolecular architectures in order to probe the presence of different structures. When analyzing multiply charged polymer ions by IMMS, the most striking feature is the observation of breaking points in the evolution of the average collision cross sections with the number of monomer units. Those breaking points are associated to the folding of the polymer chain around the cationizing agents. Here, we scrutinize the shape of the arrival time distribution (ATD) of polylactide ions and associate the broadening as well as the loss of symmetry of the ATD signals to the coexistence of different populations of ions attributed to the transition from opened to folded stable structures. The observation of distinct distributions reveals the absence of folded/extended structure interconversion on the ion mobility time scale (1-10 ms) and then on the lifetime of ions within the mass spectrometer at room temperature. In order to obtain information on the possible interconversion between the different observed populations upon ion activation, we performed IM-IM-MS experiments (tandem ion mobility measurements). To do so, mobility-selected ions were activated by collisions before a second mobility measurement. Interestingly, the conversion by collisional activation from a globular structure into a (partially) extended structure, i.e. the gas phase unfolding of the ions, was not observed in the energetic regime available with the used experimental setup. The absence of folded/extended interconversion, even upon collisional activation, points to the fact that the polylactide ions are 'frozen' in their specific 3D structure during the desolvation/ionization electrospray processes. Self-healing polymeric materials that can spontaneously repair in a perpetual manner are highly appealing to address safety and restoration issues in different key applications. Usually built from reversible moieties that require to be activated using, for example, temperature, light, or pH changes, most of these self-healing materials rely on energy-demanding processes and/or external interventions to promote self-healing. In this work, we propose to exploit rapid dynamic exchanges between urea-based moieties and moisture as an alternative to promote local and spontaneous healing responses to damage using atmospheric moisture as an external stimulus. Non-hygroscopic urea-based polyurethanes with repetitive moisture-induced healing abilities at different degrees of humidity were thus designed through coupling reactions with non-hygroscopic polypropylene glycol and urea moieties. As supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations coupled to local FTIR experimental studies, we furthermore established that the healing mechanism is ultimately related to the formation of water-urea clusters. Obviously, this work represents a platform for designing more advanced spontaneous self-healing materials beyond the present study, which hold promise for use in a wide range of technological applications.

Neutral green-emitting four-coordinate Cu(I) complexes with general formula POPCu(NN), where POP = bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether and NN = substituted 2-pyridine-1,2,4-triazole ligands, were synthesized. The crystal structures of (POPCuMeCN)(+)(PF6)(-) (1), POPCuPhPtp (2a, PhPtp = 2-(5-phenyl-2H-[1,2,4]triazol-3-yl)-pyridine), and POPCu(3,5-2FPhPtp) (2d, 3,5-2FPhPtp = 2-(5-(3,5-difluorophenyl)-2H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)pyridine) were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The electronic and photophysical properties of the complexes were examined by UV-vis, steady-state, and time-resolved spectroscopy. At room temperature, weak emission was observed in solution, while in the solid state, all complexes exhibit intense green emission with quantum yield up to 0.54. The electronic and photophysical properties were further supported by calculation performed at the (time-dependent) density functional theory level. One of the complexes was also tested as dopant in electroluminescent devices.

The molecular properties of [1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (BTBT) are vulnerable to structural modifications, which in turn are determined by the functionalization of the backbone. Hence versatile synthetic strategies are needed to discover the properties of this molecule. To address this, we have attempted heteroatom (oxygen) functionalization of BTBT by a concise and easily scalable synthesis. Fourfold hydroxy-substituted BTBT is the key intermediate, from which the compounds 2,3,7,8-bis(ethylenedioxy)-[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene and 2,3,7,8-bis(methylenedioxy)-[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene are synthesized. The difference in ether functionalities on the BTBT scaffold influences the ionisation potential values substantially. The crystal structure reveals the transformation of the herringbone motif in bare BTBT towards π-stacked columns in the newly synthesized derivatives. The DBU·I2 dual catalyst is shown to have a very high activity for the coupling reaction of CO2 and various (bis)oxiranes. The cooperative work of both DBU and iodine is tolerant to water and allows performing the cyclo-addition of carbon dioxide in very mild conditions of pressure (pCO2 = 1 bar) and in total absence of organic solvent.

Reported here is a characterization of a series of NDI–thiophene copolymers with one, two, three, and four thiophene units synthesized using Stille polycondensation of dibromo-naphthalene diimide and the trimethylstannylthiophene monomers. The effect of extension of the thiophene donor group is studied in terms of structure-charge transport correlation. The influence of side chains located on the thiophene units of copolymers with two and four thiophene units per monomer is also investigated. Charge transport of both signs is studied experimentally in field-effect transistors. Microstructural data obtained by near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) is supported by AFM topography scans. The ionic nucleophilic character of ammonium betaine catalysts allows for controlling the ROP of L-LA for DP as high as 750 with very narrow dispersity values (≤1.18). Compared to ionic nucleophilic and hydrogen-bonding based catalysts for ROP, meta-betaine combines the positive aspects of both processes in terms of kinetics and selectivity. The versatility of ammonium betaines was evidenced by varying the nature of the initiating alcohol and monomer used.

The influence of the interface of the dielectric SiO2 on the performance of bottom-contact, bottom-gate poly(3-alkylthiophene) (P3AT) field-effect transistors (FETs) is investigated. In particular, the operation of transistors where the active polythiophene layer is directly spin-coated from chlorobenzene (CB) onto the bare SiO2 dielectric is compared to those where the active layer is first spin-coated then laminated via a wet transfer process such that the film/air interface of this film contacts the SiO2 surface. While an apparent alkyl side-chain length dependent mobility is observed for films directly spin-coated onto the SiO2 dielectric (with mobilities of ≈10−3 cm2 V−1 s−1 or less) for laminated films mobilities of 0.14 ± 0.03 cm2 V−1 s−1 independent of alkyl chain length are recorded. Surface-sensitive near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy measurements indicate a strong out-of-plane orientation of the polymer backbone at the original air/film interface while much lower average tilt angles of the polymer backbone are observed at the SiO2/film interface. A comparison with NEXAFS on crystalline P3AT nanofibers, as well as molecular mechanics and electronic structure calculations on ideal P3AT crystals suggest a close to crystalline polymer organization at the P3AT/air interface of films from CB. These results emphasize the negative influence of wrongly oriented polymer on charge carrier mobility and highlight the potential of the polymer/air interface in achieving excellent “out-of-plane” orientation and high FET mobilities.

Synthesis, isolation and characterization of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) dimers are described. These derivatives were prepared starting from symmetric or asymmetric DPP monomers through Pd-catalyzed homocoupling, Yamamoto coupling or Suzuki coupling. The spectroscopic properties of these newly synthesized DPP dimers were investigated and were supported by quantum-chemical calculations.

International audience; Five new molecular semiconductors that differ from dioctylbenzothienobenzothiophene, by the introduction of ether or thioether side chains, have been synthesized and obtained in good yields. Their availability in sufficient quantities has allowed investigation of their electrochemical behaviour in solution and their electronic properties in solid state. Both ether and thioether compounds oxidise rather easily in solution, but nevertheless, they exhibit rather high ionisation potentials. This is a consequence of their crystal structure. Dioctylthioetherbenzothienobenzothiophene is rather sensitive to oxidation and degrades easily in close to ambient conditions. Dioctyletherbenzothienobenzothiophene is more stable. Its charge carrier mobility remains however rather moderate, on the order of 0.5 cm2 V−1 s−1, whereas that of dioctylbenzothienobenzothiophene reached 4 cm2 V−1 s−1, in the same conditions. The difference is explained by intrinsic factors as shown by a theoretical modelling.

A 50 : 50 wt% mixture of L-lactide and trimethylene carbonate yields a eutectic at 21.3 °C. This mixture was exploited to prepare poly(L-lactide) homopolymers at r.t. without addition of extra solvent. The intrinsic kinetic behavior of the DBU organocatalyst also allowed for the sequential polymerization of both comonomers, leading to well defined gradient copolymers.

A method for the preparation of uniaxially oriented thin films of terthiophene (20–50 μm thick) is introduced. It relies on the crystal growth with a Bridgman-type process that decouples nucleation and growth phenomena. An effective thermal gradient of 6–11.6 °C/mm has been used in which the sample (terthiophene powder deposited on either glass or fluorinated glass substrates) is displaced from a hot zone to a cold zone at a constant rate of 2.5–5 μm/s. The size and orientation of crystals have been investigated by polarized optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements. A coexistence of two polymorphs of terthiophene has been observed, but optimal gradient conditions enabling the selective crystallization of only the room temperature stable polymorph have been found. Terthiophene films deposited on fluorinated glass substrates and crystallized using the thermal gradient technique show a stronger tendency to polymorphism and random orientation of crystallites for all gradient conditions tested. The synthesis and characterization of two new anthradithiophene (ADT) derivatives substituted by thiophenyl or 2-octylthiophenyl units at the 5,11-positions and donor (triphenylamine) or acceptor (aldehyde functions) moieties at the 2,8-positions of their backbone are described. Optical measurements were performed to evaluate the effect of electron-rich/-poor substituents on their stability towards photo-oxidation and were supported by quantum chemical calculations and cyclic voltammetry experiments. A new series of cationic blue-emitting, heteroleptic iridium(III)-based metal complexes were systematically synthesized using two 4,6-difluorophenylpyridine ligands as well as one methyl- or n-butyl-substituted bisimidazolium salt carbene-type ligand. In degassed CH(2)Cl(2), all complexes display highly efficient, blue phosphorescence (λ(max) ∼ 452 nm; emission quantum yield ∼ 0.30) at room temperature and also show blue emission in a thin film. The measured photophysical properties of the complexes have been rationalized with the help of quantum-chemical calculations. Because of the high solubility of the complexes, solution-processed devices, light-emitting electrochemical cells (LEECs), were made. The results showed that true blue emission and short turn-on time is achieved when an ionic conductor, tetrabutylammonium trifluoromethanesulfonate, was used as the matrix for the film containing the emitters. These iridium complexes and the described devices are the bluest materials ever reported and the first case of LEECs based on carbene ligands.

We present a joint experimental and theoretical study of the structural and charge-transport properties of a liquid-crystalline alpha,omega-disubstituted oligothiophene derivative for application ill organic field-effect transistors. The structural properties of the crystalline and smectic phases are investigated by atomic force microscopy, X-ray reflectometry, and X-ray diffraction. To complement these data, molecular mechanics calculations together with the simulation of X-ray diffraction spectra were performed to determine the relative positions of the molecules in the unit cell. The electrical characteristics of field-effect transistors based oil the oligothiophene derivative were measured and compared in the crystalline and smectic phases. Although the silanation of the SiO2 gate dielectric promoted a marked improvement in the char-c-carrier mobilities in the crystalline Phase, the expected suppression of grain boundaries ill the liquid-crystalline phase was not unambiguously evidenced. The experimental results were further complemented by a detailed theoretical analysis of the electronic couplings governing the charge-transport properties oil the molecular scale.

This paper describes the synthesis and physicochemical characterization of novel metal-free phthalocyanines Pc(SO2R)8, bearing eight peripheral alkylsulfonyl substituents. The key synthetic step is the efficient eightfold oxidation of sulfanyl (SR) into sulfonyl (SO2R) functions in the precursor Pc(SR)8. Quantum-chemical calculations show a considerable stabilization of the HOMO and LUMO levels of Pc(SO2R)8 as a result of the presence of the strongly electron-withdrawing groups, while the HOMO−LUMO gap remains nearly unaffected. The redox behavior and electronic spectra of Pc(SO2R)8 were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and electronic absorption spectroscopy, respectively, to confirm the theoretical predictions. Particularly noteworthy is the first reduction potential of −0.14 V vs the saturated calomel electrode (SCE), which falls within the empirically established air-stability window for n-type semiconductors. We report on the synthesis and electronic spectra of the chiral, donor-acceptor (push-pull) chromophores (±)-4 and (±)-5 with a 6H,12H-5,11-methanodibenzo[b,f][1,5]diazocine scaffold (Scheme 1 and Fig. 2). The electronic structures of these compounds were investigated at a quantum-chemical level (Figs. 2 and 3). The chemical reactivity of 6H,12H-5,11-methanodibenzo[b,f][1,5]diazocine ((±)-11) towards aromatic electrophilic substitution (Scheme 2 and Table) provided additional information about its electronic structure and confirmed nonnegligible derealization of the lone pair of the bridge-head N-atoms in this heterocyclic system. © 2007 Verlag Helvetica Chimica Acta AG.

The self-organization behavior of an amphiphilic sexithiophene bearing amide functionalities is studied and compared to that of a deriv. bearing an ester group at the same position. The introduction of hydrogen-bond interactions in assemblies of these pi-conjugated oligomers is found to affect the mol. organization both in protic media and in thin deposits on mica. The amphiphilic 2,2';5',2'';5'',2''';5''',2''''; 5'''',2'''''-sexithiophene-5,5'''''-dicarboxylic acid bis[(4,7,10,13,16-pentaoxaheptadecyl)amide] forms assemblies in n-butanol and water and partially aggregates in toluene. Spectroscopy reveals that the presence of a hydrogen-bonding moiety increases the thermal stability of the assemblies in n-butanol and even more in water soln. On mica surfaces, the formation of rod-like one-dimensional nano-structures is obsd. after deposition from toluene solns. In addn., transmission electron microscopy in combination with selected area electron diffraction shows that in water plate-like structures are formed built from parallel oriented stacks, with a pi-pi distance of 3.5 .ANG.. Comparison of these data to mol. modeling and quantum chem. calcns. is used to better understand the influence of the amide group on the stacking of these compds. The introduction of these H-bonding interactions leads to denser and more stable stacks. Furthermore, we show that a deriv. of the amide compd., bearing terminal ammonium groups, forms a complex with chiral polyanions in aq. media such that the sexithiophene segments are stacked in a meta-stable helical fashion with preferred handedness. We obsd. that poly(glutamate) and DNA generate a chiral sexithiophene assembly. In time the induced chirality disappears, which is explained by the meta-stability of the kinetically formed adduct. This constitutes one step forward towards the controlled formation of functional multi-component systems in aq. soln. [on SciFinder (R)]

The supramolecular organization of the n-type P(NDI2OD-T2) polymer (also known as Polyera Activink N2200), featuring two branched octyldodecyl lateral chains, has been investigated by a combination of quantum-chemical and molecular mechanics techniques coupled to two-dimensional X-ray diffraction simulations. The structures exhibit non fully extended alkyl chains due to a compromise between the size of the monomer unit and the nature and length of the alkyl chains. Interestingly, the supramolecular organization of the polymer chains is only weakly affected by the nature of the stereogenic centers of the branched alkyl chains. The size and shape of the monomer unit and the chemical structure of the side chains appear to be the key elements governing the relationship between the supramolecular organization of P(NDI2OD-T2) polymer chains and their charge transport properties and are as important as the fine-tuning of the electronic properties of the molecular subunits in order to guarantee large electron (and hole) mobility. This study opens new perspectives for the rational design of new n-type and/or p-type polymers for further improvements of organic-based device efficiencies.

Five complexes of the form [Pd(L)(L’)] were synthesized, where L = IPr, SIPr or IPr* NHC ligands and L’ = PCy3, or IPr and SIPr NHC ligands. The photophysical properties of these complexes were determined in toluene solution and in solid state and contrasted to the poorly luminescent reference complex [Pd(IPr)(PPh3)]. Organic light-emitting diodes were successfully fabricated but attained external quantum efficiencies of between 0.3 and 0.7%. Publisher PDF

Two thienoacene dimers based on the thieno[3,2-b]thiophene moiety were efficiently synthesized, characterized and evaluated as active hole-transporting layers in organic thin-film field-effect transistors. Both compounds behaved as active p-channel organic semi-conductors showing averaged hole mobility of up to 1.33 cm2 V−1 s−1.

We present a Monte Carlo approach to estimate how molecular parameters impact hopping rates and charge mobilities in organic pi-conjugated materials. Our goal is to help in establishing structure-properties relationships. As a first step, our approach is illustrated by considering a model system made of a one-dimensional array of pentacene molecules; we describe the variations of the electron-transfer rates and of the resulting charge mobilities as a function of electric field and of the presence of molecular disorder and traps. The results highlight that there is no direct relationship between the degree of spatial overlap among adjacent molecules and charge mobility.

Semiempirical Hartree-Fock techniques have been applied to assess the molecular parameters governing the efficiency of photoinduced charge generation and recombination processes in donor/acceptor complexes involving a three-ring oligophenylenevinylene as donor and perylene bisimide as acceptor. The corresponding rates have been estimated in the framework of the Marcus-Levich-Jortner formalism for different geometries of the complexes. The results indicate that dissociation pathways involving the lowest two charge transfer excited states contribute significantly to the dynamics of the whole process. The rates are found to be strongly sensitive to the relative position of the donor and acceptor units and can be rationalized in terms of symmetry arguments applied to relevant electronic levels.

We report a detailed quantum-chemical characterization of the electronic and optical properties of polyfluorene chains and compare them to those in copolymers containing alternating fluorene and benzothiadiazole or ethylenedioxythiophene units. The introduction of the comonomer can strongly modify the excitonic properties as well as the efficiency of charge- and energy-transfer processes. The choice of the comonomer is thus critical in targeting specific optical properties while maintaining good transport properties.

In an effort to reduce hazardous chemicals, a one-pot two-step process with active bases and inactive salts was developed for the synthesis of high molar mass PEO-block-PCL-block-P(L- or D,L-LA) amphiphilic triblock copolymers. A series of poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL)/poly(L- or D,L-lactide) (P(L- or D,L-LA)) di- and triblock copolymers have been prepared in bulk from metal-free catalytic systems and starting from either 1-pyrenemethanol or poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) macroinitiator. The controlled generation of such structures was obtained after screening and comparing a wide variety of organic activators. Narrower dispersity characterizing each sample prepared from the PEO macroinitiator were elucidated by theoretical modeling. Finally, the ability of those triblock copolymers to self-associate in water was studied by dynamic light scattering and compared to PEO-b-P(CL-co-LA) copolymers.

The structural organization of three different families of semicrystalline π-conjugated polymers is reported (poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), poly[2,6-(4,4-bis-alkyl-4H-cyclopenta-[2,1-b;3,4-b0]-dithiophene)-alt-4,7-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)](cyclopentadithiophene-benzothiadiazole) (CDT-BTZ) and poly(N,N"-bis-2-octyldodecylnaphtalene-1,4,5,8-bis-dicarboximide-2,6-diyl-alt-5,5–2,2-bithiophene (P(NDI2OD-T2))). These have triggered significant interest for their remarkable charge-transport properties. By performing molecular mechanics/dynamics simulations with carefully re-parameterized force fields, it is illustrated in particular how the supramolecular organization of these conjugated polymers is driven by an interplay between the length and nature of the conjugated monomer unit and the packing of their alkyl side chains, and to what extent it impacts the charge-carrier mobility, as monitored by quantum-chemical calculations of the intermolecular hopping transfer integrals. This Progress Report is concluded by providing generic guidelines for the design of materials with enhanced degrees of supramolecular organization.

International audience; Polyphenols (synthetically modified or directly provided by human diet) scavenge free radicals by H-atom transfer and may thus decrease noxious effects due to oxidative stress. Free radical scavenging by polyphenols has been widely theoretically studied from the thermodynamic point of view whereas the kinetic point of view has been much less addressed. The present study describes kinetic-based structure-activity relationship for quercetin. This compound is very characteristic of the wide flavonoid subclass of polyphenols. H-atom transfer is a mechanism based on either atom or electron transfer. This is analyzed here by quantum chemical calculations, which support the knowledge acquired from experimental studies. The competition between the different processes is discussed in terms of the nature of the prereaction complexes, the pH, the formation of activated-deprotonated forms, and the atom- and electron-transfer efficiency. The role of the catechol moiety and the 3-OH group of quercetin as scavengers of different types of free radicals (CH3OO(*), CH3O(*), (*)OH, and (*)CH2OH) is rationalized. Identifying the exact mechanism and accurately evaluating kinetics is of fundamental importance to understand antioxidant behavior in physiological environments.

A series of blue and blue-green emitters based on neutral bis- and tris-cyclometalated Ir(III) complexes with 1-benzyl-4-(2,6-difluorophenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole (dfptrBn) as cyclometalating ligand is reported. The bis-cyclometalated complexes of the type [Ir(dfptrBn)(2)(L(^)X)] with different ancillary ligands, L(^)X = picolinate (pic) (2) or 2-(5-(perfluorophenyl)-2H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)pyridine (pytrF(5)) (3), are described and their photophysical properties compared with the analogous complexes containing the archetypal 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridinato (dfppy) as cyclometaled ligand (C(^)N). Complex 2 exhibits a marked solvatochromic behavior, from 475 nm in toluene to 534 nm in formamide, due to the strong MLCT character of its emissive excited state. Complex 3 displays a true-blue emission, narrower in the visible part than FIrpic. In addition, the homoleptic complex [Ir(dfprBn)(3)] (4) and the heteroleptic compounds with mixed arylpyridine/aryltriazole ligands, [Ir(dfptrBn)(2)(C(^)N)] (C(^)N = 2-phenylpyridinato (ppy) (5) or dfppy (6)), have been synthesized and fully characterized. The facial (fac) complex fac-4 is emissive at 77 K showing a deep-blue emission, but it is not luminescent in solution at room temperature similarly to their phenylpyrazole counterparts. However, the fac isomers, fac-5 and fac-6, are highly emissive in solution and thin films, reaching emission quantum yields of 76%, with emission colors in the blue to blue-green region. The photophysical properties for all complexes have been rationalized by means of quantum-chemical calculations. In addition, we constructed electroluminescent devices, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) by sublimation of fac-6, and by solution processed polymer-based devices (PLEDs) using complexes fac-5 or fac-6 as dopants.

The synthesis and characterization of two new anthradithiophene (ADT) derivatives bearing electron donating (triphenylamine) or accepting (5-formylthiophen-2-yl unit) moieties have been performed to assess their potential as materials for organic photovoltaics. Optical spectroscopy was used to evaluate the effect of electron rich/poor substituents on the visible absorption spectrum and on the stability towards photo-oxidation. The results are interpreted with the assistance of quantum-chemical calculations and cyclic voltammetry experiments.

Synthetic control of the mutual arrangement of the cyclometalated ligands (C^N) in Ir(III) dimers, [Ir(C^N)(2)Cl](2), and cationic bis-cyclometalated Ir(III) complexes, [Ir(C^N)(2)(L^L)](+) (L^L = neutral ligand), is described for the first time. Using 1-benzyl-4-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole (HdfptrBz) as a cyclometalating ligand, two different Ir(III) dimers, [Ir(dfptrBz)(2)Cl](2), are synthesized depending on the reaction conditions. At 80 °C, the dimer with an unusual mutual cis-C,C and cis-N,N configuration of the C^N ligands is isolated. In contrast, at higher temperature (140 °C), the geometrical isomer with the common cis-C,C and trans-N,N arrangement of the C^N ligand is obtained. In both cases, an asymmetric bridge, formed by a chloro ligand and two adjacent nitrogens of the triazole ring of one of the cyclometalated ligands, is observed. The dimers are cleaved in coordinating solvents to give the solvento complexes [Ir(dfptrBz)(2)Cl(S)] (S = DMSO or acetonitrile), which maintain the C^N arrangement of the parent dimers. Controlling the C^N ligand arrangement in the dimers allows for the preparation of the first example of geometrical isomers of a cationic bis-cyclometalated Ir(III) complex. Thus, N,N-trans-[Ir(dfptrBz)(2)(dmbpy)](+) (dmbpy = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine), with cis-C,C and trans-N,N arrangement of the C^N ligands, as well as N,N-cis-[Ir(dfptrBz)(2)(dmbpy)](+), with cis-C,C and cis-N,N C^N ligand orientation, are synthesized and characterized. Interestingly, both isomers show significantly different photophysical and electroluminescent properties, depending on the mutual arrangement of the C^N ligands. Furthermore, quantum chemical calculations give insight into the observed photophysical experimental data.

The low-kinetic energy collision-induced dissociation (CID) behavior of different sodium-cationized polylactide (PLA) oligomers was thoroughly investigated to shed some light on the analytical potentialities of CID experiments in the context of polymer characterization. Indeed, investigation of several end-groups modified PLA reveals that, in addition to the expected end-group specific dissociations, collisionally-excited PLA.Na(+) suffer from a backbone cleavage. The so-obtained sodium-bound dimer cations consecutively undergo the loss of a monomeric residue that corresponds to neutral acrylic acid. The experimental observations, performed on a hybrid Q-ToF instrument, were totally corroborated by a theoretical study involving DFT calculations, molecular mechanics, and molecular dynamics calculations.

While polymer light-emitting diodes are currently finding commercial applications in displays and lighting, the development of low bandgap polymers emitting in the infrared has received much less attention in spite of potential applications for instance in the field of communication technologies. We report here a light emission at 1 eV from a low bandgap polymer made of an alternation of dialkoxy-phenylene units and a low bandgap monomer composed of an electron accepting 2-thia-1,3,5,8-tetraaza-cyclopenta[b]naphthalene group fenced with electron donating thiophene units. The electronic structure of the polymer chains has been characterized at a quantum-chemical level to shed light into the experimental results. Two donor–bridge–acceptor compounds containing triphenylamine (TPA) donors and perylenemonoimide (PMI) acceptors have been studied by spectroscopic techniques and quantum chemical computation. Both systems have been observed to emit prompt and delayed fluorescence under certain conditions indicating that forward and reverse electron transfer (ET) processes can occur between the locally excited and the charge separated states. The experimental and computational results show that the TPA and PMI chromophores are better coupled by almost 50% in the meta isomers which undergo ET more readily than the para isomers. Quantum chemical calculations indicate that this unexpected situation is the result of a phenyl group on the side of the bridge being advantageously positioned in the meta isomers. This leads to more extensive delocalisation of the TPA HOMO into the bridge enhancing the total through bond electronic coupling between the TPA and PMI chromophores. The calculations also indicate a strong angle dependence of the total coupling in both isomers. The experimental results are discussed in the context of the high temperature limit of Marcus's theory of non-adiabatic ET.

We describe at the quantum-chemical level the main parameters that control charge transport at the molecular scale in discotic liquid crystals. The focus is on stacks made of triphenylene, hexaazatriphenylene, hexaazatrinaphthylene, and hexabenzocoronene molecules and derivatives thereof. It is found that a subtle interplay between the chemical structure of the molecules and their relative positions within the stacks determines the charge transport properties; the molecular features required to promote high charge mobilities in discotic materials are established on the basis of the calculated structure-property relationships. We predict a significant increase in the charge mobility when going from triphenylene to hexaazatrinaphthylene; this finding has been confirmed by measurements carried out with the pulse-radiolysis time-resolved microwave conductivity technique.

The self-assembly of a series of tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivatives at the interface between non-volatile organic solutions and the graphite surface has been studied by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). The TTFs have been prepared such that they bear none, one, two (in different constitutions) or four alkyl chains of different lengths and different functional groups. The STM images reveal that the packing of the TTF cores can effectively be controlled by changing the substitution pattern on the heterocycle. Several structures are seen at the interphase—parquet-type packing, single and double core tapes, and even isolated molecules—all of which have the TTF core essentially coplanar with the surface. Molecular modelling has shown that several orientations of the molecules are practically equal in energy on the graphite, which explains the polymorphous packing of some of the molecules. Solvent effects also play a role in determining the 2D structures.

1,5,7-Triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD) polymerizes rac-lactide (rac-LA) to form highly isotactic polylactide (PLA) with a Pm = 0.88, while meso-LA yields heterotactic PLA (Pm ~ 0.8) at &minus, 75 &deg, C. The stereocontrol of the cryogenic-based ring-opening polymerization comes from a perfect imbrication of both chiral LA and the propagating chiral end-group interacting with the achiral TBD catalyst.
