Selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) toward cinnamyl alcohol (COL) is an extremely important and challenging reaction. Herein, a series of PtxFey-Al2O3 bimetallic catalysts with varied Pt to Fe ratios were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation method. The introduction of Fe significantly modifies the electronic and surface properties of Pt, which clearly enhances the C=O hydrogenation selectivity. Among all the catalysts, Pt3Fe-Al2O3 displays the best catalytic performance and the conversion of CAL is 96.6% with 77.2% selectivity of COL within 1 h. In addition, Pt3Fe-Al2O3 had excellent reusability with 76% COL selectivity after five runs of the recycle process. Further characterization of the fresh, used and cycled catalysts revealed that the structure and electronic state of the synthesized PtxFey-Al2O3 are unchanged after hydrogenation reaction. The identical-location transmission electron microscopy (IL-TEM) results revealed that the interaction between the nanoparticles and the supports was strong and the catalyst was relatively stable.

Hydrogenation of aldehydes (RHO) is one of the frequently used reactions in organic synthesis and pharmaceuticals industries. In this contribution, we have synthesized control shaped and nano-sized tetragonal zirconia (t-ZrO2), palladium supported on zirconia (Pd/t-ZrO2) and nickel promoted palladium supported on zirconia (Ni-Pd/t-ZrO2) though modified microwave irradiation method. All the prepared samples were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray Diffractometry (XRD), Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and pore size analysis, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). Theoretical calculation (DFT) revealed high interaction of Pd with t-ZrO2(101) surface. Furthermore, adsorption energy, support relaxation and charge transfer studies confirmed the stability of Pd on t-ZrO2(101) surface. The catalytic activity of catalysts was tested for cinnamaldehyde (CAL) hydrogenation in a modified microwave reactor. The comparative study of microwave irradiated (MW) and conventional heating (C-Heating) systems show supremacy of MW over C-Heating by a factor of 46% under optimal reaction parameters for Pd/t-ZrO2 catalyst. The stability, life span, conversion and selectivity of Pd/t-ZrO2 under MW system suggest the applicability of the catalysts for a variety of organic hydrogenation reactions.

Natural bioactive compounds with anti-carcinogenic activity are gaining tremendous interest in the field of oncology. Cinnamon, an aromatic condiment commonly used in tropical regions, appeared incredibly promising as adjuvant for cancer therapy. Indeed, its whole or active parts (e.g., bark, leaf) exhibited significant anti-carcinogenic activity, which is mainly due to two cinnamaldehyde derivatives, namely 2-hydroxycinnaldehyde (HCA) and 2-benzoyloxycinnamaldehyde (BCA). In addition to their anti-cancer activity, HCA and BCA exert immunomodulatory, anti-platelets, and anti-inflammatory activities. Highly reactive α,ß-unsaturated carbonyl pharmacophore, called Michael acceptor, contribute to their therapeutic effects. The molecular mechanisms, underlying their anti-tumoral and anti-metastatic effects are miscellaneous, strongly suggesting that these compounds are multi-targeting compounds. Nevertheless, unravelling the exact molecular mechanisms of HCA and BCA remain a challenging matter which is necessary for optimal controlled-drug targeting delivery, safety, and efficiency. Eventually, their poor pharmacological properties (e.g., systemic bioavailability and solubility) represent a limitation, and depend both on their administration route (e.g., per os, intravenously) and the nature of the formulation (e.g., free, smart nano-). This concise review focused on the potential of HCA and BCA as adjuvants in Cancer. We described their medicinal effects as well as provide an update about their molecular mechanisms reported either in-vitro, ex-vivo, or in animal models.

Transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) channel activation induces cutaneous vasodilation in humans in vivo. However, the mechanisms underlying this response remains equivocal. We hypothesized that nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and Ca2+ activated K+ (KCa) channels contribute to the TRPA1 channel-induced cutaneous vasodilation with no involvement of cyclooxygenase (COX). Cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) in 9 healthy young adults was assessed at 4 dorsal forearm skin sites treated by intradermal microdialysis with (1) 1.985% dimethyl sulfoxide + 0.015% lactated Ringer solution with propylene glycol (vehicle control), (2) 10 mM l-NAME, a nonselective NOS inhibitor, (3) 10 mM ketorolac, a nonselective COX inhibitor, or (4) 50 mM tetraethylammonium, a nonselective KCa channel blocker. Cinnamaldehyde, a TRPA1 channel activator, was administered to each skin site in a dose-dependent manner (2.9%, 8.8%, 26%, and 80%, each lasting ≥30 minutes). Administration of ≥8.8% cinnamaldehyde increased CVC from baseline at the vehicle control site by as much as 27.4% (95% confidence interval of 5.3; P0.001). NOS inhibitor attenuated the cinnamaldehyde-induced increases in CVC at the 8.8%, 26%, and 80% concentrations relative to the vehicle control site (all P ≤ 0.05). In contrast, both the COX inhibitor and KCa channel blockers did not attenuate the cinnamaldehyde induced-increases in CVC relative to the vehicle control site for all concentrations (all P ≥ 0.130). We conclude that in human skin in vivo, NOS plays a role in modulating the regulation of cutaneous vasodilation in response to TRPA1 channel activation with no detectable contributions of COX and KCa channels.

The hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde is usually performed in the liquid phase in batch mode. In this study, a vapour phase flow system has been used to evaluate the use of cobalt catalysts supported inside and outside hollow carbon spheres (HCSs). The influence of temperature, hydrogen flow rate, and catalyst mass on the hydrogenation reaction was investigated. The catalysts generally showed modest conversion to the required products, hydrocinnamaldehyde, 3-phenyl propanol, cinnamyl alcohol, together with formation of various decomposition products. The data revealed that the Co@HCS showed better conversion and product selectivity compared with the Co/HCS. The catalysts with smaller particle sizes (ca. 6 nm) were more efficient than those with larger particles (30–40 nm). An increase in reaction temperature (200–300 °C) resulted in a lower cinnamaldehyde conversion and a poor product selectivity. TPR studies revealed that the Co@HCSs had a stronger metal-support interaction than the Co/HCSs catalysts. Catalyst recycling studies revealed that only the Co/HCSs could be regenerated (four cycles) and post reaction analysis of the catalysts revealed that this was due to HCS pore blockage and not Co sintering.

Differences in the activity of Pd/WO3 and Pd/MoO3 (Pd loading 0.4–4 wt%) catalysts in competitive hydrogenations of the C C and C O groups in polyfunctional reagents have been studied as a function of two effects: (1) the in situ formation of hydrogen bronzes, HxWO3 and HxMoO3, and (2) the electronic interaction between the supports and the metallic Pd. The cinnamaldehyde (CAL), furfural (FU) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) were hydrogenated under mild reaction conditions. The formation of hydrogen bronzes in Pd/WO3 and physical mixture of Pd/WO3 with supporting WO3 oxide upon exposure to H2 was also studied using the gas flow-through microcalorimetry. In both Pd/MoO3 and Pd/WO3 catalysts, the electronic interactions contributed to the promotion of selectivity toward the C O hydrogenation in CAL and FU, yet in Pd/MoO3 this effect was much more pronounced. On the other hand, apart from increasing the overall reaction rate, the formation of hydrogen bronzes remarkably enhances the C C hydrogenation in CAL, as well as the decarbonylation of FU to furan and hydrogenolysis of C–OH in HMF to 5-methylfurfural. The bronze effects are significantly stronger in HxWO3, compared to HxMoO3, which may be related to higher H-species mobility and weaker H-bonding in the W–O–H (54 kJ/mol H2) than in the Mo–O–H (100 kJ/mol H2). This may also explain very high tendency of Pd/WO3 to furan ring hydrogenation in FU and HMF as well as almost selective (>98%) hydrogenation of furfuryl alcohol to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol.

Although the selective hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehyde to unsaturated alcohol (UOL) is an extremely important transformation, it is still a great challenge to achieve high selectivity to UOL due to thermodynamic favoring of the C C hydrogenation over the C O hydrogenation. Herein, we report that iridium nanoclusters (Ir NCs) confined within hollow MIL-101(Fe) expresses satisfied reaction activity (93.9%) and high selectivity (96.2%) for the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) to cinnamyl alcohol (COL) under 1 bar H2 atmosphere and room temperature. The unique hollow structure of MIL-101(Fe) benefits for the fast transport of reactant, ensuring the comparable reaction activity and better recyclability of Ir@MIL-101(Fe) than the counterparts which Ir NCs were on the surface of MIL-101(Fe). Furthermore, The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data indicates the electropositive Ir NCs, owing to the electron transfer from Ir to MIL-101(Fe), can interact with oxygen lone pairs, and Fourier transform infrared spectrum shows the Lewis acid sites in MIL-101(Fe) can strongly interact with C O bond, which contributes to a high selectivity for COL. This work suggests the considerable potential of synergetic effect between hollow MOFs and metal nanoclusters for selective hydrogenation reactions.

Cinnamic acid and cinnamaldehyde may be obtained from renewable plant bio-mass, Cinnamon plants, therefore these compounds should be considered as bio-based platform chemicals for synthesis of novel substances. This review describes recent achievements in organic synthesis based on transformations of cinnamaldehyde, cinnamic acid and its derivatives, focusing, mainly, on the preparation of biologically active compounds. Reactions of these cinnamic derivatives may proceed both onto carbon-carbon double bond and carbonyl group that allows obtaining a wide variety of organic compounds having high synthetic importance and different practically valuable properties, including biological activity.

Ovarian cancer is the deadliest type of cancer in women. It is often presented at an advanced stage and has a poor prognosis. The current treatment methods for this tumor are not safe and have serious side effects. It has been suggested that the use of steroids for hormonal purposes is linked to the development of ovarian cancer. The current study aims to investigate the effects of cinnamaldehyde on these hormones. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of cinnamaldehyde on the reproductive hormones of rats after being induced to develop ovarian cancer. Cinnamaldehyde is an active compound that has been used in Asia for over 4000 years. Cinnamaldehyde has different biological activities including antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, antiviral, antioxidant, antitumor were reported by many investigators. In the present study, animals were randomly allocated into VI groups: Group -I served as a control with normal water and group-II was drug control (50 mg/kg b. w) rats received only cinnamaldehyde orally for 36 weeks. The rats in group III were given a single dose of 7,12 Dimethyl benzanthracene (100 µg/rat) dissolved in 10 µL of sesame oil to surgically exposed left ovary and maintained up to 36 weeks to initiate ovarian carcinogenesis. Group IV rats received DMBA + cinnamaldehyde 50 mg/kg b. w (before starting the experiment and continued up to 24 weeks). Group V rats received DMBA + cinnamaldehyde 50 mg/kg b. w (25-36 weeks). Group VI rats received DMBA + cinnamaldehyde 50 mg/kg b. w (1-36 weeks). Serum levels of Estrogen, progesterone, LH, FSH were estimated using ELISA. The results showed that significant increase in serum level of Estrogen, LH, FSH, and decreased progesterone in only DMBA treated group when compared with control groups. Also, there was a significant decrease in serum levels of Estrogen, LH, FSH, and increased progesterone in cinnamaldehyde treated groups (dose-dependent) when compared to only DMBA treated group. The results of the present study suggested that cinnamaldehyde has anticancer activity and further investigations are needed for evaluating the anticancer potential and mechanism of its action. Objective: This study aims to evaluate novel compounds of isothiocyanate (ITC) based on eugenol and cinnamaldehyde derivatives as the drug candidate of Plasmodium falciparum anti-malaria using in silico method, physicochemical, pharmacokinetics, toxicity, and synthetic accessibility prediction. This present study also describes molecular docking and pharmacoinformatics of natural ITC in Moringa oleifera leaves. Methods: A series of novel ITC compounds (3, 5, and 6) were designed and analyzed with a series of natural ITC compounds (7, 8, 9, 10) for P. falciparum anti-malaria. This research is descriptive qualitative and uses the reverse molecular docking method, proving the biological activity of compounds theoretically using software and database information. Results: Molecular docking study showed that compound 6 exhibits binding affinity (-5.3 Kcal/mol) on Van der Waals interaction with the residual active site (His159, Cys25) of cysteine protease. All designed ITC compounds are obeyed the Lipinski and Veber Rule, have a well-brain penetrant character and have a medium risk for mutagenic, tumorigenic, and reproductive prediction. They are also in the simple rate of synthetic accessibility (SA) estimation. In regards to natural ITCs, they all have better assay characteristics except the SA. Conclusion: Molecular docking, physicochemical, pharmacokinetic, and toxicity studies show that methyl eugenol isothiocyanate and cinnamaldehyde isothiocyanate are promising anti-malaria compounds. Substituents of hydroxy, acetate and tetrahydropyran groups in the building block ring are suggested for better in silico profiles enhancement.

Cinnamaldehyde is a natural antimicrobial food preservative. Previous studies have suggested that cinnamaldehyde interacts with the cell membrane, but the molecular targets of cinnamaldehyde action on foodborne pathogens are still unclear. In this study, the structural changes of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli cells were observed after cinnamaldehyde treatment. Then, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and parallel reaction monitoring were used for determining the effects of cinnamaldehyde treatment of these bacteria on the expression of genes and proteins associated with glycerophospholipid biosynthesis. Changes in fatty acids (raw materials for the biosynthesis of glycerophospholipids) and glycerophospholipids in S. aureus and E. coli after cinnamaldehyde treatment were analyzed to confirm the results of gene and protein expression experiments. Cinnamaldehyde regulated the glycerophospholipid biosynthesis pathways of these foodborne pathogens, mainly targeting phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine, which resulted in the disruption of cell membrane integrity.

The improved properties of Euchema cottoni biopolymer films are significant determinants as a functional material. In this study, cinnamon oil extract reinforced cellulose nanofibre biopolymer films were fabricated. The CNF isolated via supercritical CO2 was obtained from bamboo precursor to enhance the properties of the films at different concentrations of cinnamon essential oil obtained from cinnamon bark which were incorporated in the matrix networks. The physico-chemical, thermal and antimicrobial properties of the isolated CNF reinforced E. cottoni biopolymer films was obtained using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transmission irradiation (FT-IR), Atomic forced microscopy (AFM), water contact angle measurement (WCA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and antimicrobial properties. The characterization study was carried out for improved mechanical, thermal, morphological, wettability and antimicrobial properties. The result revealed that the morphology, mechanical, and wettability properties of the biopolymer films were significantly enhanced with the incorporation of 1, 2, 3 and 4% (w/w) of cinnamon essential oil in the matrix structure containing CNF. The hydrophobic property of the film was enhanced with the incorporation of cinnamon oil extract indicated decrease in surface roughness of the films which were exhibited by increased water contact angle compared to the neat film. The homogenous dispersion of CNF resulted to decreased surface roughness relative to the neat film by 314.96 to 48.30 Rq respectively. The hydrophobicity of the films increased as concentration of cinnamon oil in the matrix component was increased as the surface roughness decreased. Increased hydrophobic property of the film was noticed after the incorporation of 3% concentration of cinnamon oil with equivalent contact angle of 92.36○. The tensile properties of the biopolymer film was significantly improved as SW/CNF/C3 cinnamon oil was incorporated in the matrix. The optimum tensile strength was exhibited by the film by the addition of 3% concentration of essential oil, 75.2% cinnamaldehyde was contained in the oil extract. The E. cottoni derived biopolymer film demonstrated satisfactory mechanical and thermal stability including improved surface hydrophobicity. Furthermore, the biofilms exhibited good inhibition activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria with the incorporation of the cinnamon oil extract with inhibition zone diameter at 26.94 ± 9.4 and 30.28 ± 0.46 respectively indicating effective antimicrobial activities of the biofilm. The functional properties of the fabricated biopolymer film was enhanced with the addition of cinnamon oil.

One of the most troublesome postharvest diseases of citrus fruits is sour rot, caused by Geotrichum citri-aurantii. Sour rot reduces the shelf life of the fruits leading to massive economic losses. This study investigated the potential for a combination of cinnamaldehyde and citral (CC; 1: 2, v/v) at reducing the incidence of sour rot postharvest and its possible effect on fruit quality. Our findings show that CC could totally inhibit germination of G. citri-aurantii spores, with the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) both being 0.80 mL L(−1). The combination (CC) acted against G. citri-aurantii by targeting the chitin content of the cell wall. Wax + CC (WCC; 1 × MFC) treatment also showed high efficiency in reducing the incidence of sour rot, which was 40% lower than in the control group by day 8 when all the fruits in the latter were rotten. Apart from vitamin c (Vc) content which was higher in the test group than in the control group, WCC treatment did not have any significant effect on the quality of the citrus fruits, the examined fruit quality parameters being weight loss rate, coloration index, firmness, pH, total soluble solid (TSS) content, Vc content, as well as solid acid ratio. These results indicate that the combination of cinnamaldehyde and citral (CC, 1: 2, v/v) can be used as a natural preservative to alleviate the progress of sour rot in citrus fruits postharvest.

Digestive tract disorders, especially gastric disorders, are often experienced by people. One drug to treat this disorder has a mechanism of blocking the H2 receptor. This research was conducted to find compounds from C.verum which have the stability of bind to H2 receptors. The method used is protein modeling with swiss-model, docking with PLANTS (CHEMPLP) and activity prediction. The test results obtained that the docking score was ?- amorphene (-65,79), ?-bergamotene (-65,48), ?-copaene (-66,62), ?-cubebene (-66,46), Cadinene (-64 , 79), Camphor (-52.15), Caryophyllene (-62.61), Cinnamaldehyde (-68.17), Epicatechin (-80.43), Ergosterol (-85.24), Eugenol (-67.35), Hydrocinnamaldehyde (-65,53), Quercetin (-74,38), Protocatechuic acid (-71,49), Stigmasterol (-88,88), 4- (2,3-dihydro-3- (hydroxymethyl) - 5- (3-hydroxypropyl) -7- (methoxy) benzofuranyl] -2-methoxyphenyl (-85,29). Combined with the probability activity of compounds that have the potential to be further developed are Epicatechin and urolignoside.

Natural plant-derived antimicrobial nanocoatings have been synthesized by mixing brewed tea with cinnamaldehyde oil. Concurrent addition of copper or silver salts produces hybrid tea-cinnamaldehyde-copper or tea-cinnamaldehyde-silver nanocoatings, respectively. Tea-cinnamaldehyde, tea-cinnamaldehyde-copper, and tea-cinnamaldehyde-silver coatings are all found to display strong antibacterial efficacy against both Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (Log10 Reduction = 8.44 and 7.90, respectively). Tea-cinnamaldehyde-copper and tea-cinnamaldehyde-silver hybrid nanocoatings deposited onto nonwoven polypropylene provide 98.6 and 99.8% deactivation, respectively, toward murine coronavirus MHV-A59 (a potential surrogate for COVID-19 global pandemic coronavirus SARS-CoV-2). Key advantages of this approach are that the coating fabrication involves just a single step, utilizes cheap reagents (which are widely available over the counter to the general public), does not require any equipment apart from a container, and the coatings spontaneously adhere to a variety of substrate materials (including silicon, glass, polyester, nonwoven polypropylene, poly(tetrafluoroethylene), and cotton). Tea is one of the most ubiquitous beverages in the world, meaning that these antimicrobial coatings could be produced locally almost anywhere and by anyone without the need for any specialized technical training or expertize (for example, at remote field hospitals during humanitarian crises and in low-income countries). © 2021 The Authors. Background: In Ayurveda, single or multiple herbs mixed in a particular proportion are used for the treatment of different diseases. Caturjata Curna (CC) is a popular Ayurvedic medicine with therapeutic application in tastelessness, diseases due to vitiated Kapha, poisoning and discoloration. The present study is an attempt to standardize a polyherbal medicine CC. Methods: CC was prepared by mixing an equal proportion of ingredients including Tvak (Cinnamomum verum) - stem bark, Ela (Elettaria cardamomum (L.) Maton) - seed, Tvakpatra (Cinnamomum tamala (Buch.-Ham.) T.Nees & Eberm.) - leaf and Nagakesara (Mesua ferrea L.) - stamen in equal parts as per guidelines in Ayurvedic Formulary of India. Macro-microscopy, physico-chemical parameters, HPTLC fingerprinting, and spectroscopic parameters were determined according to standardised methodology available in Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India. Results: Caturjata curna is brown coloured with a characteristic odour and aromatic taste. Powder microscopy showed the presence of diagnostic characters like horse shoe-shaped stone cells, perisperm cells with volatile oil droplets, paracytic stomata and endothecium layers of anthers indicating each ingredient of the formulation. HPTLC showed 13, 13 and 16 bands each under short UV, long UV and white light post derivatisation respectively in ethanolic extract of the formulation. Physico-chemical standards like loss on drying at 105º (10.39 %), total ash (4.1 %), acid-insoluble ash (0.90 %), ethanol- soluble extractive (10 %), water-soluble extractive (8.77 %) and pH of 10% aqueous solution (4.58) were recorded. The presence of cinnamaldehyde and 1-eicosene was confirmed by GC-MS and NMR studies. Conclusion: a monograph on quality standards for CC has been proposed which would serve as a document to control the quality of this polyherbal formulation.

The purpose of this study is to develop a green and safe chitosan-based preservative which can be applied in strawberry preservation. Chitosan (CS) was treated by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine oxygen radical/laccase oxidation system (TEMPO/laccase oxidation system), which was mainly used to prepare TEMPO/laccase chitosan (TLCS). Furthermore, on this basis, the structure and performance of TLCS were also studied. The results showed that compared with CS, the solubility of TLCS improved, and the kinetic viscosity reduced significantly. Next, a cinnamaldehyde-TEMPO/laccase chitosan (CIN-TLCS) antibacterial agent was prepared by covalently combining the aldehyde group in cinnamaldehyde (CIN) and the amino group in CS. It was found that CIN combined with TLCS through covalent bonds, which changed the structure and crystallinity of TLCS. In addition, the total antioxidant capacity of CIN-TLCS also improved, which was necessary for the application of CIN-TLCS in extending shelf life. Cytotoxicity experiments showed that CIN-TLCS had no cytotoxicity. Furthermore, strawberries were used to explore the actual bacteriostatic and fresh-keeping effects of CIN-TLCS. The experiment found that CIN-TLCS could maintain the freshness of strawberries at room temperature (23 ± 1°C) for 5 days and had positive effects on strawberry color, loss-weight rate, hardness and pH. These results showed that CIN-TLCS could be used as a potential preserving agent for fruit storage. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: To obtain a green, safe and effective food preservative, chitosan (CS) was modified by a 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine oxygen radical/laccase oxidation system (TEMPO/laccase oxidation system) to get TEMPO/laccase chitosan (TLCS) and cinnamic aldehyde-TEMPO/laccase chitosan (CIN-TLCS). At the same time, the structure and antibacterial properties of TLCS and CIN-TLCS were analyzed, and their possibility as a new green and safe strawberry preservative was studied. Compared with oxazolidine, imidazole and triazole commercial drugs, CIN-TLCS has the advantages of low price, no pollution, no cytotoxicity and no drug resistance.

Biofilm-associated Candida infections threaten public health and show high mortality. The drugs used in treatment are very limited due to reasons such as toxicity, low efficacy, and drug resistance, and new alternatives are needed. The use of natural products of plant origin in the biofilm management draws attention. CA (cinnamaldehyde, cinnamic aldehyde, or 3-phenyl-2-propenal) is an essential oil component that can also inhibit mold growth and mycotoxin production. However, there are some limitations in its use due to its poor solubility and volatility in water. Recently, the combination of natural components and nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems shows positive results. In this study, the effects of PLGA (poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide)) nanoparticles arrested with CA (CA-PLGA NPs) on C. albicans planktonic and biofilm forms (prebiofilm and postbiofilm) were investigated. According to the results, the amount of active ingredient loaded in CA-PLGA NPs is much lower than the free CA and a strong antifungal effect was obtained even at this rate. Also, the postbiofilm application is more effective than prebiofilm application. PLGA NPs can also be a useful carrier for other essential oils, and their potential in various antifungal, antibiofilm, and biomedical applications should be investigated.

Cinnamaldehyde is an essential oil extracted from the leaves, bark, roots and flowers of cinnamon plants (genus Cinnamomum). Cinnamaldehyde has shown biological functions such as antioxidants, antimicrobials, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity and anti-cancer. However, poor solubility in water as well as molecular sensitivity to oxygen, light, and high temperature limit the direct application of cinnamaldehyde. Researchers are using different encapsulation techniques to maximize the potential biological functions of cinnamaldehyde. Different delivery systems such as liposomes, emulsions, biopolymer nanoparticles, complex coacervation, molecular inclusion, and spray drying have been developed for this purpose. The particle size and morphology, composition and physicochemical properties influence the performance of each delivery system. Consequently, the individual delivery system has its advantages and limitations for specific applications. Given the essential role of cinnamaldehyde in functional food and food preservation, appropriate approaches should be applied in the encapsulation and application of encapsulated cinnamaldehyde. This review systematically analyzes available encapsulation techniques for cinnamaldehyde in terms of their design, properties, advantages and limitations, and food application status. The information provided in this manuscript will assist in the development and widespread use of cinnamaldehyde-loaded particles in the food and beverage industries.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-invasive method for cancer treatment that relies on the generation of excess reactive oxygen species (ROS), upon excitation of photosensitizer (PS), to eradicate tumor cells. However, the overexpress of endogenous antioxidants in tumor cells will eliminate the ROS and restrict the therapeutic efficacy of PDT. Herein, a novel type of PS was developed by conjugating cinnamaldehyde (CA), a kind of oxidative stress amplified agent, with porpholactam through a hydrazone bond. The new PS retains the photophysical properties of porpholactam, which displays high singlet oxygen quantum yield for the PDT function. The results of in vitro experiments performed including ROS assay and the cytotoxicity in cancer cells suggest that the rational design of the novel porpholactam-CA derivatives result in enhanced ROS generation upon irradiation, providing a possible approach to achieve enhanced therapeutic effects in PDT.

Cinnamaldehyde (Cin) is a natural product obtained from cinnamon and is reported to have a potential anti-fungal, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticancer effect. The present study investigated the possible protective role of Cin against tenuazonic acid-induced mycotoxicity in the murine model. Tenuazonic acid (TeA), a toxin produced by Alternaria is a common contaminant in tomato and tomato-based products. Here, Swiss male mice were administered with TeA isolated from Paradendryphiella arenariae (MW504999) (source-tomato) through injection (238 µg/kg BW) and ingestion (475 µg/kg BW) routes for 2 weeks. Thereafter, the prophylaxis groups were treated with Cin (210 mg/kg BW). The experiment was carried out for 8 weeks. The treated groups were compared to the oral and intra-peritoneal experimental groups that received the toxin solely for 8 weeks. Haematological, histopathological and biochemical aspects of the experimental and the control mice were analysed. Sub-chronic intoxication of mice with TeA showed elevated malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) production; abnormal levels of aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT). Treatment with Cin reversed TeA-induced alterations of antioxidant defense enzyme activities and significantly prevented TeA-induced organ damage. Thus, cinnamaldehyde showed therapeutic effects and toxicity reduction in TeA induced mycotoxicosis.

Background and Objective: Strangle in the horses is the commonest and the most significant infectious disease. An antibiotic of the first choice, commonly Penicillin, is used for antimicrobial therapy. Due to side effects and resistance against used antibiotics, interest in novel antimicrobial substances from other sources, including herbal medicine as safe agents has been raised. This study evaluated the antibacterial susceptibility profile of Streptococcus equi subsp equi in the confrontation of Trans-cinnamaldehyde, 1, 8 Cineole, and Pulegone on bacterial pathogens isolated from the horse. Materials and Methods: Two hundred clinically isolates were studied by the single disk method to Ampicillin, Ciprofloxacin, Trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole, Gentamicin, Enrofloxacin, Chloramphenicol, Azithromycin, Cefotaxime, Oxytetracycline, Erythromycin, and Penicillin. Paper discs were prepared by impregnation in 10 µL essential oils main compounds (EOMC). The antibacterial activities of Trans-cinnamaldehyde, 1, 8 Cineole, and Pulegone were evaluated by microbroth dilution and disk diffusion methods against isolates of S. equi. Results & Conclusion: All the isolates were resistant to Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and Cefotaxime. The maximum growth inhibition zone was related to Oxytetracycline and Ampicillin. The growth inhibition zone diameter was 30 mm, 20 mm, and 26 mm for Trans-cinnamaldehyde, Pulegone, and 1, 8 Cineole, respectively. The results of the Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentrations (MBCs) showed that Trans-cinnamaldehyde had the highest antibacterial activity compared to other EOMC against S. equi. This study indicated that Trans-cinnamaldehyde, 1, 8 Cineole, and Pulegone revealed antibacterial properties; therefore, these main constituents of the medicinal plant could be a safe candidate for the new antibacterial products.

Synthesis of proanthocyanidin-cinnamaldehydes pyrylium products (PCPP) was achieved by the condensation reaction of proanthocyanidins (PAC) with cinnamaldehyde and four cinnamaldehyde derivatives. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) spectra of PCPP show masses that correspond to (epi)catechin oligomers attached to single, double, or triple moieties of cinnamaldehydes. Synthesized PCPP exhibited fluorescence at higher excitation and emission wavelengths than PAC. Results indicate that PCPP were more bioactive for agglutinating extra-intestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) compared to PAC. Scanning electron microscopy indicates that PCPP interact with ExPEC surface structures and suggests that PCPP have a higher affinity with the fimbriae-like structures of ExPEC than PAC. Fluorescent microscopy performed on in vitro and in vivo agglutination assays show that PCPP were entrapping ExPEC in a web-like network, thus demonstrating agglutination of ExPEC. This study demonstrated the potential of PCPP to improve our understanding of the temporal and dynamic interactions of PAC in in vitro and in vivo studies.

Several supported gold metal catalysts with different Au nanoparticles sizes were prepared and evaluated for the chemoselective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CA) to cinnamyl alcohol (CAL). To investigate the structure-activity relationship, stability of catalyst, heterogeneity and recyclability, the structural characteristics of materials and Au catalysts (fresh and spent catalysts) were studied by employing variety of physico-chemical techniques. The interrelationship among Au nanoparticles size (nm) with turnover frequency (h-1 ) of Au catalysts has also been explored. Among the various Au catalysts tested, nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon (NMC) supported Au catalyst having homogeneously dispersed (78.8%) Au nanoparticles (1.6 nm) synthesized by sol-immobilization method (Au-NMC-SI) demonstrated improved catalytic activity affording 78% CAL selectivity and 94.2% CA conversion without using any promoter. Moreover, Au-NMC-SI catalyst exhibited good recyclability and stability. The catalyst synthesis approach described in this investigation opens up a novel strategy for the design of highly efficient metal nano-catalysts supported on NMC materials.

Cinnamaldehyde has a strong biological activity, with an obvious effect in killing foodborne pathogens. In this study, an optimal formula of cinnamaldehyde nanoemulsion (CN) was selected and characterized by mean droplet size analysis, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and Turbiscan analysis. The results showed that the optimal formula was composed of 6% w/w cinnamaldehyde, 10% w/w surfactant EL-90 (castor oil polyoxyethylene ether), and 84% w/w deionized water. The droplet size of CN was very small, reaching 48 nm, and the droplet distribution was uniform. Also, the fluctuation of the multi light scattering spectrum of CN was very stable. It was found that CN had a strong antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) due to its lipophilic nature and induction of oxidative stresses. For E. coli, the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was 0.5 mg µL−1. Compared with E. coli, CN had a weak inhibitory effect on S. aureus. It was also revealed that CN had a high cyto-compatibility on L02 cells; the survival rate of the control group was 96.7%, and the total apoptosis rate was 3.25%. The survival rate of the L02 cells in the treated group with CN (0.05, 0.15, and 0.25 µg µL−1) was 95.6%, 95.1% and 86.3%, respectively, which reveals their high safety. The findings of this study provides an effective reference for the development of food-grade preservatives in the future.

The spread of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative (MDR) bacteria is a global public health problem, as infections caused by MDR Gram-negative bacteria are difficult to treat. New antibiotic agents need to be developed to overcome this problem, and phytochemicals show promise at this point. In this study, methanol extracts were prepared from cinnamon, thyme, nettle, white tea, rosehip, and antibacterial activity of the methanol extracts was studied against two MDR Gram-Negative bacteria (K. pneumoniae and A. baumannii) by broth microdilution method. The MICs of methanol extracts of cinnamon, rosehip, thyme, white tea for A. baumannii were found as 0.015125 g/ml, 0.07825 g/ml, 0.030625 g/ml, 0.00796875 g/ml, respectively. It was found that only cinnamon methanol extract had antibacterial activity in the used extract concentrations against K. pneumoniae and the MIC value was 0.0605 g/ml. The effects of plant methanol extract with antibacterial activity and imipenem combinations were studied in vitro using the checkerboard method. The FIC Indexes were obtained from the checkerboard results and it was observed that the combination of methanol extract and imipenem showed an antagonistic or additive/indifferent effect but not a synergistic effect. We evaluated the binding affinity of epigallocatechin 3-gallate, quercetin, cinnamaldehyde, carvacrol, and thymol phytocompounds using in silico methods, which are well known as a phytocompounds in white tea, cinnamon, thyme, nettle, and rosehip and have antibacterial activities. The results suggested that these phytocompounds should be supported with in vivo and in vitro experiments to investigate their potential for being inhibitor candidates.

Cinnamomum verum and Cinnamomum cassia are widely used as spice and herbal medicine around the world. However, it is challenging to differentiate and make a quality evaluation for both Cinnamomum types due to their similarities in morphological features and general chemical composition using traditional analytical methods. In this study, a simple and efficient method was developed for the comprehensive evaluation of the two Cinnamomum, together with Cassia twig, by combining UPLC fingerprint analysis combined with quantitative analysis using two internal standards for the determination of multiple components (TSDMC). The content of 9 components (procyanidin B2, cinnamtannin B1, coumarin, 2-hydroxycinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl alcohol, cinnamic acid, cinnamaldehyde, 2'-methoxycinnamaldehyde, and eugenol) in samples was determined using reliable relative conversion factor factors that were obtained using procyanidin B2 and cinnamic acid as two internal reference standards. The quantitative results combined with chemometrics analysis were employed to identify these samples. This simple and reproducible method revealed great differences among the three Cinnamomum in their chemical composition and provides a promising method for accurate differentiation and quality evaluation for the three Cinnamomum.

This study was aimed to explore the comparative efficacy of cinnamon bark extract, cinnamaldehyde and kaempferol against acetaminophen (APAP)-induced oxidative stress. Cinnamon bark extract, cinnamaldehyde and kaempferol were utilized for in-vivo analysis. From the results of in-vitro screening tests, cinnamon ethanolic extract was selected for in-vivo study in mouse model. For this, Balb/c albino mice were treated with cinnamon ethanolic extract (200 mg/kg), cinnamaldehyde (10 mg/kg) and kaempferol (10 mg/kg) orally for 14 days followed by single intraperitoneal administration of APAP during 8 hours. Blood and organ samples were collected for biochemical and histopathological analysis. The results showed that cinnamon bark ethanolic extract, cinnamaldehyde and kaempferol ameliorated APAP-induced oxidative stress and organ toxicity in mice. In conclusion, cinnamaldehyde and kaempferol possess comparable antioxidant potential even at 20-times less dose as compared to cinnamon bark ethanolic extract suggesting therapeutic potential in oxidative stress-related disorders.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation with cinnamon products on the growth, meat quality, liver structure, and blood composition of striped catfish. All diets were developed using intact protein and formulated to have similar protein (25.5–25.7%) and lipid (7.3–7.9%) contents. The control diet was formulated without cinnamon products (C), while dietary treatments were formulated by adding 1% cinnamon powder (CM), 0.1% cinnamon extract (CE), and 0.1% cinnamaldehyde (CN). Each treatment contained four replications. Striped catfish (n=25, average size of 11.97±0.55 g) were stocked in 2 × 1 × 1.5 m3 cages on 20 × 10 m2 pond and fed until apparent satiation twice a day for 72 days. The results demonstrated the differences among CM, CE, and CN diets compared to C diet based on protein retention (27.77% vs 32.62, 34.39, 34.96%, respectively), lipid retention (71.10% vs 60.96, 52.83, 52.93%, respectively), meat hardness (197.07 gf vs 278.37, 283.87, 248.27 gf), lightness (48.37 vs 52.73, 49.93, 48.62, respectively), muscle lipid (7.74% vs 2.61, 2.72, 3.80%, respectively), muscle protein (13.17% vs 18.75, 18.66, 16.35%, respectively), malondialdehyde (0.13 μmol/L vs 0.07, 0.06, 0.06 μmol/L, respectively), and superoxide dismutase enzyme (3.52 U/g protein vs 7.70, 8.71, 7.92 U/g protein, respectively). The CM, CE, and CN diets also improved the fish liver tissue followed by decreased low-density lipoprotein level in blood plasma (1226.27 mg/dL vs 839.77, 811.52, 849.40 mg/dL, respectively). Therefore, cinnamon products can improve the growth, meat quality, liver structure, and blood composition of striped catfish.

In this study, a novel eco-friendly chitosan-cinnamaldehyde cross-linked nanoparticles (CSN) were synthesised via a green route and deposited, in alternating combination with sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP), over polyester (PET) nonwoven fabric using layer-by-layer (L-B-L) coating technique. The successful deposition of a nano-level coating (upto 684.7 nm) of 10.5 bi-layers of CSN and TPP, i.e. (CSN/TPP)10.5, with CSN at the top, was achieved at individual fibre surface as confirmed via scanning electron microscopy. Fabric coated with (CSN/TPP)10.5 showed remarkable antibacterial activity against both the Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria, even with a low concentration of the nanoparticles (0.1 w/v). Moreover, the coating material possesses very low toxicity as revealed by the cytotoxicity test. The developed fabric could also adsorb metal ions like Pb2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Ni2+, Zr4+ and Cd2+, etc. from water. The coating was found to be stable in alkaline and neutral pH environments. The slight reduction in the pore dimensions, air permeability and tensile strength of fabric after coating were insignificant with respect to its potential applications in developing health care products, medical and health care textiles and dry or wet purification media.

Corrosion inhibition propriety of (2E)-3-phenylprop-2-enal, known as trans-cinnamaldehyde (TCA) for mild steel in 1 M HCl medium was investigated by weight loss technique (WL), potentiodynamic polarization (PP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and density functional theory approach, using the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) basis level. It was shown that the inhibition efficiency augmented with TCA concentration. The potentiodynamic polarization was revealed that TCA acted as a mixed type inhibitor with prevalence cathodic. The adsorption isotherm of TCA on the mild steel surface was found to obey to El-Awady, Temkin and Florry–Huggins. The scanning electron microscope analysis was confirming that a protective adsorbed film of the studied inhibitor showed on the metal surface. Moreover, the most relevant global and local quantum chemical parameters according to the inhibition effect were demonstratedthat the adsorption of the studied compound on the steel surface is mostly associated to its active electrophile and nucleophile sites.

A series of novel trienone curcumin analogues 1, based on Claisen–Schmidt condensations of cinnamaldehyde, arylaldehyde, and acetone, is prepared and the crystal structure of 1a is determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal belongs to the monoclinic system, space group P21/c with a = 18.120(5) A, b = 14.624(4) A, c = 5.8926(16) A, β = 97.686(3)°, Z = 4, V = 1547.3(7) A3, Dc = 1.265 mg/m3, μ = 0.243 mm–1, F(000) = 616, final R = 0.0449 and wR = 0.1109 for 2156 observed reflections (I > 2σ(I)). In addition, molecular docking of compounds 1a, 1d and IKKβ protein are performed in CDOCKER of Discovery Studio 4.5 and the three-dimensional crystal structures of the cancer factor-human kinase-β enzyme IKKβ (PDB: 4KIK) are obtained. Furthermore, the antitumor activities of 1a and 1d are evaluated by the CCK-8 assay against human cancer cell line A549 in vitro, indicating that the small molecules have a moderate antitumor activity.

The increased incidence of food spoilage has exacerbated the need to enhance the protection of processed foods. Food packaging incorporated with bioactive components can be exploited to improve the security of food products from microbiological contamination. Thus, this study aimed to generate an alginate-based film loaded with cinnamaldehyde for use in food packaging. Aspergillus niger ATCC 9029 was utilised to assess the biodegradability of the film. The fungal growth on the plate with alginate film was evident after 21 days of incubation period and 29.7% of weight loss was monitored. The mechanical characterisation of the film indicated that the resulting film was sturdy and flexible. In the cinnamaldehyde release test, no burst release was observed. The release was slow and gradual. Out of 8 test microorganisms, only 6 microorganisms were inhibited by the film with cinnamaldehyde during the cross streak test. The growth inhibition test signified that there were 4 Gram-positive bacteria with 100% growth inhibition. The application of the film showed a notable reduction of bacterial load in the cooked rice. Besides, it exhibited 5.0-log suppression of bacterial growth, which relative to control. The results indicated that the alginate film incorporated with cinnamaldehyde could be potentially used as an eco-friendly food packaging material.

In this study, we produced a novel chemical cross-linked Guar gum/Poly(methylvinylether-alt-maleicacid) (GG/PMVE-MA) hydrogels with various blending weight ratio of GG, and PMVE-MAn (GG/P20, GG/P40, and GG/P70). These produced hydrogels were analyzed by fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, thermogravimetric analysis, swelling degree, and mechanical characteristics. The results demonstrated that with increasing PMVE-MAn content, thermal stability, swelling degree, and mechanical characteristics of hydrogels were improved. As a result, the GG/P70 hydrogel was selected as an optimal hydrogel. Moreover, MTT analyze indicated that these hydrogels were non-toxic and any reduction or stop of cells growth wasn't observed over time. Additionally, encapsulation of cinnamaldehyde (CA)-loaded chitosan nanoparticles CSNPs into optimal hydrogel formulation significantly (P E. coli and S. areus, demonstrating that the hydrogel had high antibacterial and antioxidant activities. The general results showed that this composite hydrogel (GG/P70/CA-loaded CSNPs) could be useful for various applications such as drug delivery, tissue engineering and food industry.

Surface states—the electronic states emerging as a solid material terminates at a surface—are usually vulnerable to contaminations and defects. This fundamental limitation has prohibited systematic studies of the potential role of surface states in surface reactions and catalysis, especially in more realistic environments. Herein, we use selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) on platinum-covered titanium oxide (Pt@P25) as a prototype reaction, and show that the competitive exchange of extra-introduced species (sodium hydroxide and sodium formate) with spontaneously formed weak bound carbonate and bicarbonate anions at Pt NPs can reconstruct the surface states, which directs the preferred adsorption of the conjugated C=O and C=C double bonds of CAL, and consequently, results in highly efficient synthesis of unsaturated alcohol cinnamyl alcohol (COL) and saturated aldehyde hydrocinnamaldehyde (HCAL) with high selectivity of 98.9% and 99.5%, respectively. Our concept of restructured surface states to tune the chemoselectivity of α, β-unsaturated aldehydes triggered by the selective adsorption of alien molecules may lead to new design principles of heterogeneous catalysts, beyond the conventional d-band theory.

Aldehydes comprise a major portion of skin sensitizers because they can react with both cysteine and lysine. Moreover, cinnamaldehyde (CA) is a typical moderate sensitizer and is often used in an alternative test method for skin sensitization. The amino acid derivative reactivity assay (ADRA) is an in chemico test method that evaluates the reactivity of cysteine derivatives (N-(2-(1-naphthyl)acetyl)-l-cysteine, NAC) and lysine derivatives with the test chemicals and uses CA as a proficiency substance. We found that NAC depletion for CA was only 10-20% when CA was used directly from the reagent bottle, although it increased to almost 100% when stored after being aliquoted from the reagent bottle. It was also found that this was due to the air oxidation of NAC itself rather than the reaction of NAC with CA, indicating that this result simply shows an increase in apparent reactivity. Aldehydes are known to produce active species, such as radicals, during air oxidation. Therefore, we investigated whether radicals were generated under storage conditions using the radical scavenger OH-TEMPO. LC/MS/MS analysis revealed that CA and OH-TEMPO complexes were produced during the air oxidation of CA. In the results of five aldehydes, similar to CA, active species were not generated as significantly as CA. Collectively, during the evaluation of the aldehydes, it can be seen that careful measures need to be taken to prevent the aldehydes from oxidizing during storage, indicating that assessment without preventing air oxidation carries an increased risk of overestimation compared with the intrinsic skin sensitization potency.

Immunostaining was performed to evaluate glycogen synthesis in the liver and morphological changes in the heart. Gut microbiota was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene amplification sequencing. The serum metabolomics were determined by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. The relevant gene expression levels were determined by quantitative real-time PCR.Results: CA treatment significantly improved the glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity in T1DM mice. CA increased glycogen synthesis in the liver and protected myocardial injury in T1DM mice. CA affected the gut microbiota particularly by increasing the relative abundance of Lactobacillus johnsonii and decreasing the relative abundance of Lactobacillus murinus in T1DM mice. The glucose level was positively correlated with 88 functional pathways of gut microbiota and negatively correlated with 2 functional pathways of gut microbiota. Insulin resistance was positively correlated with 11 functional pathways. The analysis of serum metabolomics showed that CA treatment significantly increased the levels of taurochenodeoxycholic acid, tauroursodeoxycholic acid, tauro-α-muricholic acid and tauro-β-muricholic acid, taurodeoxycholic acid, taurocholic acid and taurohyodeoxycholic acid in T1DM mice. Taurohyodeoxycholic acid level was highly correlated with the blood glucose levels. Furthermore, the abundance of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii was positively correlated with AKT2, insulin like growth factor 1 receptor, E2F1 and insulin receptor substrate 1 mRNA expression levels, while taurohyodeoxycholic acid level was negatively correlated with IRS1 mRNA expression level.Conclusion: Our results indicated that CA may interfere with gut microbiota to affect host metabolomics, especially the bile acids, so as to directly or indirectly modulate the expression levels of glucose metabolism-related genes, thus subsequently reducing the blood glucose level in the T1DM mice.Keywords: cinnamaldehyde, type 1 diabetes, glucose, insulin, gut microbiota, serum metabolomics

Aeromonas hydrophila is one of the most important pathogens of zoonotic importance globally, causing various diseases in humans and animals. With the increase of drug resistance and the emergence of multidrug-resistant strains, therapeutic effects of antibiotics against A. hydrophila are limited. Hence, novel agents and strategies are urgently needed to overcome these difficulties. Wavy pili (W-pili), one of the major adhesion molecules, play a crucial role in adhesion and hemagglutination in the pathogenesis of A. hydrophila and regarded as a potential target for therapy. In this study, cinnamaldehyde, a natural compound isolated from cinnamon, could inhibit the production of W-pili and its biological function at the sub-inhibitory concentration (sub-MIC). To determine the active mechanism of cinnamaldehyde, transmission electron microscopy, adhesion inhibition, hemagglutination, electrophoresis, semi-quantitative RT-PCR, biofilm assay, and fish immersion challenge were performed. The results showed that cinnamaldehyde can reduce the production of W-pili and the formation of biofilm without affecting the growth of A. hydrophila. Besides, cinnamaldehyde interfered with the synthesis of W-pili by downregulating the expression of the genes related to pili protein, thereby reducing the adhesion and hemagglutination ability of A. hydrophila and its adhesive ability to the gills and intestines of channel catfish. Therefore, cinnamaldehyde could be employed as a promising candidate for preventing and controlling A. hydrophila infection in aquaculture, especially in antibiotic-resistant strains.

World Journal of Advanced Research and Reviews Fungicidal activity of nine selected conventional fungicides, identified five plant oils and their combined effect againstA. solani, the causal pathogen of early blight on tomato. GC-MS analysis of the tested oils indicated that terpene hydrocarbons (97%) with cinnamaldehyde as the major compound; sulfur compounds; fatty acids and organo-sulfur-containing compounds were the main components in cinnamon, garlic, mustard and onion oils, respectively. In vitro, Speedcide® (difenoconazole) and Cabrioduo® (Dimethomorph + Pyraclostrobin) were the most effective against theA. solanifungus with EC50values of 94.6 and 88.6 ppm respectively. Toledo® (Tebuconzole) achieved EC50value of 631.2 ppm. Roxyl-M® was significantly more effective than Roxyl–plus® or Remik®. Speedcide® alone or mixed with mandipropamid or azoxystrobin in Revus-Top® or Cruze® were the lowest effectivein vitro. Garlic and mustard oils were more effective in liquid media than solid one. Cinnamon, onion, garlic and bitter almond oils caused moderate fungi-toxicity against early blight pathogen and could be implemented in the IPM program. Lower EC50values were obtained in case of combinations of fungicides with oils than separate treatments. The effect of free cinnamaldehyde (CA) and CA-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) on the post-harvest quality of Mazafati date as a soft date cultivar was evaluated. Date fruits were immersed in sodium alginate (SA) solution alone or incorporated with 1000 and 2000 ppm free CA or CA-loaded NLC, then packed in polyethylene bags and stored for 180 days at 4 and 25 °C. The weight loss and the variations of pH, titratable acidity, and total soluble solids of the coated samples containing free CA and CA-loaded NLC were significantly lower than the treated sample with distilled water as control at the end of the storage period. The CA-loaded NLC treatments reduced the weight loss of the samples stored at 4 and 25 °C respectively by 32.7% and 55.1%, compared to the control. The total sugar content (TSC) significantly decreased, but reducing sugar content (RSC) increased in all samples during the storage period. The TSC and RSC of the samples treated with 2000 ppm CA-loaded NLC (stored at 4 °C) were 15.2% higher and 7.0% lower than the control, respectively. Total bacteria and fungi counts in the treated CA-loaded NLC samples were about 3.5 log CFU/g less than the control. The use of free CA or CA-loaded NLC, especially 2000 ppm CA-loaded NLC, improved the sensory attributes of the date samples. Overall, it can be concluded that edible coatings containing CA, especially CA-loaded NLC, can extend the shelf life of date fruit without any undesirable impacts on sensory attributes.

The experiment has been conducted in the present study., aimed to evaluate the hepatoprotective, role of Cinnamomum zeylanicum ethanolic extract in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced hepatotoxic male rats, The cinnamon and its oil reported to have many beneficial uses in food preservation due to antioxidant of cinnamon. The Phenolic compounds extracted from cinnamon such as hydroxyl cinnamaldehyde and the hydroxycinnamic acid act as scavengers of peroxide radicals and avoid oxidative damage (Mathew and Abraham, 2006; Leela, 2008). Ranjbar et al, (2006) observed individuals consuming cinnamon tea showed increased total serum antioxidant status, increased thiols such as glutathione, NADPH, NADH, SOD, and decreased lipid peroxidation.

Herein, we report a rapid catalyst-free three-component reaction of 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone, cinnamaldehydes and 3-aminopyrazoles in ethanol medium under reflux conditions for the easy access of styryl-linked dihydropyridines fused with naphthoquinone and pyrazole moiety. A wide variety of cinnamaldehyde derivatives and 3-aminopyrazoles were found suitable for this three-component reaction. All the products were fully characterized by spectroscopic tools and by recording single crystal XRD of one of the product. Catalyst-free reaction conditions, short reaction time, good yields of the products, easy purification process, formation of three new bonds (Two C-C and one C-N) in one-pot and products having four different bioactive moieties are the notable features of this methodology.
