This work aims to describe the socio-technical network of a Chemistry laboratory in the school "Professora Maria do Rosário Castaldi", a State Center for Professional Education in the city of Londrina, Brazil, taking the translation theories proposed by Bruno Latour as motivation. The observation data were either recorded in audio or written in a diary, following the laboratory studies perspectives, particularly those of the Actor-Network Theory. According to these perspectives, the laboratory can be understood as an imbricate network composed of several elements, instances, interests, partnerships, procedures and knowledge, all of which produced by human and non-human entities that constitute the objects and meanings known to us as sciences or scientific practices. In addition, the concept of translation--a key concept of this theoretical body--helped to understand the heterogeneous set of elements mobilized by its actors with the aim of making the laboratory a recognized and consolidated organization. The observation and description of the material indicate how the network makes the analyzed laboratory something that is both completely dependent on and producer of the network in which it operates. Namely, the manner such process of materialization of the laboratory is dependent on a number of associations, negotiations, strategies, and alignments performed by human and non-human actors, linking the largest number of elements in order to make the construction of this space possible. The discussion allowed one to conclude that its permanence and success are not guaranteed, given that the whole process of collective action is always about to break or fall apart at any point.

It is essential to develop a safety culture with the participation of university teachers and students in actions and studies that can contribute to safer and more sustainable practices in academic laboratories. The present work analyzes the potential of a training program to raise awareness and establish environmental education and green chemistry concepts concerning procedures for the management and treatment of chemical waste generated in experimental classes. This is a qualitative case study providing a critical perspective of environmental education. The training activity, lasting 45 minutes, was conducted with 66 students entering Chemistry courses at a Brazilian public university. Data collection was carried out using an initial questionnaire to identify the students' prior knowledge, and a final one applied after the training period. The questionnaires contained open questions and closed questions with a Likert-type scale. The results showed that the training activity contributed to the students' understanding of the concepts, procedures, and attitudes related to the management and treatment of chemical waste, including the interrelations among the environmental, social, and economic impacts of waste management, the importance of correct separation and storage of residues for disposal using different types of treatment, the civil liability of the academic community for the residues generated, and how the 3Rs principles can favor sustainable practices in the academic context.

This research draws on Legitimation Code Theory (LCT) to understand the epistemic dimension of the higher education classroom discourse of a professor who is well evaluated by his students. In expository science classroom discourse, concepts are loaded with different meanings, a process that is called "condensation of meanings" in LCT, and are expressed using the concept of epistemic semantic density (ESD). The ESD can vary in classroom discourse, generating what is called a semantic wave in the LCT context. In this work, we initially compare two different translation devices, which are ways of systematically exploring the characteristics of the knowledge expressed in the classroom and how they vary, generating semantic waves. We were able to observe the strengths and weaknesses of both devices. They proved to be powerful tools in revealing how the complexity of science knowledge varies in a lesson. However, neither one demonstrates how meanings are connected in the lesson or how the semantic density of a particular concept changes over time. In this sense, we explore how everyday words at times become loaded with technical meaning when other concepts are connected to them. To achieve that, we use third device based on network science, an approach that analyzes and represents the systems of interactions of a wide range of physical and social phenomena. This allows us to evaluate how a term commonly used in everyday language, such as "lamp," can play a central role in the construction of meanings related to the episteme of chemistry. In addition, while LCT assumes that semantic waves necessarily optimize learning, the results obtained herein revealed that constellation of meanings does not directly relate to semantic waves.

It is notorious that researches related to electrochemical sensors increased significantly due the promising characteristics that these devices present such as the possibility of obtaining information, with minimum manipulation of the studied system, in real time, and with low environmental impact. This article covers the carbon nanomaterials, presenting important aspects such as main properties, synthesis methods, and the application of these materials in the development of electrochemical sensors for the analysis of drugs and compounds of clinical interest. In this context, drug analysis is extremely important for quality control, to ensure that the medicine fulfills its role effectively without possible complications that could compromise the patient’s health and quality of life. In addition, analytical methods capable of determining compounds of clinical interest in biological fluids are extremely important for the indication of effective diagnoses. Thus, the versatility, selectivity, and portability of the electroanalytical techniques make the electrochemical sensors a favorite tool for the determination of drugs and compounds of clinical interest. It will be possible to follow in the present work that carbon nanomaterials have excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, strong adsorption capacity, high electrocatalytic effect, high biocompatibility, and high surface area. The possibility of formation of different composite materials based on carbonaceous nanomaterials that makes these materials promising for the development of analytical sensors, contributing to rapid, sensitive, and low-cost analyses can also be highlighted.

Considering the important role played by mathematical derivatives in the study of physical-chemical processes, this paper discusses the different possibilities and formulations of this concept and its application. In particular, in Chemical Thermodynamics, we study exact differentials associated with the so-called state functions and inexact differentials associated with path functions. As an application, we discuss the equation of state associated with a gas.

Abstract P53 Phase separation is crucial towards amyloid aggregation and p63 and p73 have enhanced expression in tumors. This study examines the phase behaviors of p53, p63, and p73. Here we show that unlike the DNA-binding domain of p53 (p53C), the p63C and p73C undergo phase separation, but do not form amyloids under physiological temperatures. Wild-type and mutant p53C form droplets at 4°C and aggregates at 37 °C with amyloid properties. Mutant p53C promotes amyloid-like states in p63C and p73C, recruiting them into membraneless organelles. Amyloid conversion is supported by thioflavin T and Congo red binding, increased light scattering, and circular dichroism. Full-length mutant p53 and p63C (or p73C) co-transfection shows reduced fluorescence recovery after photobleaching. Heparin inhibits the prion-like aggregation of p63C and p73C induced by p53C. These findings highlight the role of p53 in initiating amyloid aggregation in p63 and p73, opening avenues for targeting prion-like conversion in cancer therapy.

Natural curcumin is composed of three curcuminoids, namely curcumin (CUR), deme-thoxycurcumin (DMC) and bis-demethoxycurcumin (BDMC). These compounds are utilized in various biophotonics applications, including photodynamic therapy (PDT). This work aimed to evaluate the photodynamic action (alternative to antibiotics) of synthetic curcuminoids against Staphylococcus aureus. Herein, we evaluated an optimal proportion of the three curcuminoids mixed in solution to improve photoinactivation effects. Therefore, a set of computational calculations was carried out to understand the photodynamic action (stability and mechanism) of curcuminoids. Regarding computational analysis, the curcuminoid molecules were optimized using DFT with the hybrid exchange–correlation functional M06-2X, which includes long-range correction, and the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. DMC and BDMC were more effective as photosensitizers than curcumin at a very low concentration of 0.75 µM, inactivating more than five orders of magnitude of S. aureus. Theoretical UV-vis absorption spectra showed that at maximum absorption wavelengths, electronic transitions of the π→π* type originated from H→L excitations. The BDMC was more stable than the other two curcuminoids after photobleaching, and the fluorescence emission was also higher, which could lead to its usage as a fluorescence dye to track bacteria. In fact, the results of electronic structure calculations proved that the stability order of curcuminoids is CUR < DMC < BDMC. The mixture of synthetic curcuminoids was more effective in the inactivation of S. aureus compared to curcumin by itself; for all proposed mixtures, an equal or superior reduction was achieved.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic and debilitating condition that affects a significant number of individuals worldwide. Unfortunately, the currently available therapeutic approaches often yield unsatisfactory results and may be accompanied by harmful side effects. A medicinal plant called Psidium glaziovianum Kiaersk has potential benefits in the treatment of this condition due to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. In this study, our objective was to investigate the potential therapeutic effects of P. glaziovianum essential oil (PgEO) in alleviating arthritis symptoms in mice induced by Complete Freund’s Adjuvant (CFA). The effect of P. glaziovianum essential oil was evaluated in mice with Complete Freund’s Adjuvant (CFA)-induced arthritis. Edema sizes, macroscopic and radiographic images, cytokine levels, and oxidative stress were evaluated. Administration of PgEO at dosages of 50 and 100 mg/kg effectively prevented CFA-induced osteoarticular changes in arthritic mice, resulting in a significant reduction in joint damage. Additionally, the PgEO treatment exhibited the ability to minimize edema, a common symptom associated with arthritis. Furthermore, PgEO can modulate the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress, both of which play crucial roles in the progression of the disease. In conclusion, our study suggests that PgEO holds great potential as a natural therapeutic agent for rheumatoid arthritis.

IntroductionUntargeted metabolomics is often used in studies that aim to trace the metabolic profile in a broad context, with the data-dependent acquisition (DDA) mode being the most commonly used method. However, this approach has the limitation that not all detected ions are fragmented in the data acquisition process, in addition to the lack of specificity regarding the process of fragmentation of biological signals. The present work aims to extend the detection of biological signals and contribute to overcoming the fragmentation limits of the DDA mode with a dynamic procedure that combines experimental and in silico approaches.MethodsMetabolomic analysis was performed on three different species of actinomycetes using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The data obtained were preprocessed by the MZmine software and processed by the custom package RegFilter.Results and DiscussionRegFilter allowed the coverage of the entire chromatographic run and the selection of precursor ions for fragmentation that were previously missed in DDA mode. Most of the ions selected by the tool could be annotated through three levels of annotation, presenting biologically relevant candidates. In addition, the tool offers the possibility of creating local spectral libraries curated according to the user’s interests. Thus, the adoption of a dynamic analysis flow using RegFilter allowed for detection optimization and curation of potential biological signals, previously absent in the DDA mode, being a good complementary approach to the current mode of data acquisition. In addition, this workflow enables the creation and search of in-house tailored custom libraries.

Palygoskite pellets were synthesized with lignin and WAX® and subjected to technological characterization for application in the remediation of Pb ions contained in aqueous effluents. X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization of the palygorskite:lignin:WAX® material in a proportion of 70:15:15 revealed that the heat treatment of the pellets did not compromise the crystalline structure of the palygoskite. Texture analyses demonstrated that the surface area increased after synthesis and heat treatment, thus increasing the adsorption capacity. Regarding porosity, X-ray microtomography revealed that the pellets exhibit an irregular and porous spherical morphology with interconnected pores. Adsorption tests showed a removal of 73% of PbII contained in aqueous effluents after 15 min, with equilibrium reached in 60 min (88.36%). After the adsorption process, the presence of lead in the material was qualitatively confirmed through scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) images. The produced pellets exhibit promising adsorbent qualities, such as strength and effective PbII ion adsorption.

The history of the discovery, use, and development of dyes is closely linked to the history of humanity itself. Among the first records of human civilization are cave paintings made from, e.g., fruits, plants, minerals, and insects. Over the centuries, using different techniques, colors have been given to all types of materials and products, from clothing to food. The chemicals responsible for colors are dyes - a vast collection of molecules of the most varied compositions, but which have in common the absorption of light within the visible window of the electromagnetic spectrum. This article aims not only to review the properties of some classes of natural dyes, their origins, and their applications but also to describe the various computational chemistry methods involved in designing new bio-inspired molecules.

The main difference between a dry cell battery and an alkaline one is the composition of the electrolyte. In zinc–carbon batteries, dry cell, the electrolyte is a paste formed by mixing ammonium chloride and zinc chloride, whereas in alkaline batteries, the electrolyte is a concentrated aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide containing a certain amount of zinc oxide, hence the name alkaline for this battery. Therefore, the improper disposal of these materials has numerous consequences for the environment, since the potentially toxic metals present in them can be leached, infiltrating, and contaminating the soil layers, the groundwater, as well as the fauna and flora of the regions nearby. Thus, the objective is to perform studies that aim to simulate and analyze the release of potentially toxic metals present in batteries found in normal environmental conditions, through leaching tests from regular batteries (Zn–C) on fertilized soil, simulating a landfill, in addition to tests on sandy soil in order to aid the identification of possible waste release.

The high frequency of infectious diseases has spurred research into effective tactics to combat microorganisms that are resistant to several drugs. The overproduction of the transmembrane efflux pump protein NorA, which may export hydrophilic fluoroquinolones, is a common mechanism of resistance in S. aureus strains. This work evaluated the antimicrobial activity of the ethanolic extract from the leaves of Croton heliotropiifolius (EECH) against different bacterial and fungal strains, as well as investigating its modulating effect on the resistance to norfloxacin in a Staphylococcus aureus SA1199B overproducing the NorA efflux pump. Microdilution assays were used to assess the EECH’s antibacterial efficacy. The MIC of norfloxacin or ethidium bromide (EtBr) against the SA1199B strain was determined in the presence or absence of the EECH in order to assess the modifying influence on drug resistance. The EECH showed no activity against the Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains tested. The EECH also showed no antifungal activity against Candida albicans ATCC 10231. On the other hand, the extract reduced the MIC values for norfloxacin against SA1199B at subinhibitory concentrations. In addition, the EECH also reduced the MIC values of EtBr at subinhibitory concentrations, suggesting the occurrence of phytochemicals that inhibit efflux pumps. Molecular docking showed that retusin, a flavonoid found in the extract, could compete with norfloxacin at the orthosteric site of the NorA, indicating that it could be a potential efflux pump inhibitor. However, isolated retusin did not enhance the activity of norfloxacin or EtBr and it did not inhibit the EtBr efflux, showing that it is not a NorA inhibitor. Even though C. heliotropiifolius is a source of phytochemicals that function as adjuvants for norfloxacin, isolated retusin cannot be used in conjunction with norfloxacin to treat infections brought on by S. aureus that overproduces NorA.

Silver (Ag) doped titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles are promising photocatalysts for the degradation of emerging pollutants. These nanocomposites enhance the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 in visible light, suppress the e-/h+ rearrangement, and enhance their bactericidal properties. This review proposes a bibliometric analysis that elucidates research trends, and important topics on contaminant degradation, analyzes the advantages and limitations of different synthesis techniques (solvothermal, photochemical reduction, sol-gel, and others), their properties to produce Ag/TiO2, and their potential for pollutant degradation. Thus, depending on the technique chosen, Ag doping of TiO2 can offer high stability, recyclability for more than 3 cycles, customized morphologies and sizes, among others. Applications of Ag/TiO2 include wastewater treatment, antibacterial surfaces, food packaging, implants, and others. Advances in the synthesis of Ag/TiO2 photocatalysts offer excellent photocatalytic degradation, between 80 % and 100 %, for organic dyes, hormones, pharmaceuticals, pesticides and other emerging pollutants. Ag/TiO2 photocatalysts show superior degradation rates compared to pure TiO2, with some achieving up to 99 % pollutant removal. The bibliometric analysis performed by Methodi Ordinatio, classifying 267 articles, reveals a foundation of relevant articles, around 35 % of articles published on these topics were published between 2019 and 2021. A complete cost analysis of Ag/TiO2 is considered to determine the feasibility for pilot and large-scale experimentation. These nanocomposites offer a promising solution to address the growing concern about emerging pollutants, disinfection of water, and in the inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms.

ABSTRACTThe anti-corrosive effect of the extract in ethanol of Justicia brandegeeana (Acanthaceae) against carbon steel AISI 1020 in sulfuric acid medium 1 mol L−1 was investigated. In addition to the effect of seasonality, several techniques were used to investigate the anti-corrosive activity, such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PP), linear polarization resistance (LPR), and weight loss. The chelating effect was analyzed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and the surface was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the inhibition efficiency is dependent on the concentration of the extract, reaching its maximum at 1500 ppm and despite having good thermal stability (82.41% inhibition at 70°C), it decreases with increasing temperature, indicating a physisorption behavior. The extract obeyed the Langmuir isotherm and the Tafel curves characterized it as a mixed inhibitor, with a tendency to cathodic region. It also presented a 52% chelating effect against Fe+2 ions, and the SEM analysis indicated a protection with the presence of plant extract, thus minimizing surface roughness. These results indicated the J. brangeeana ethanol extract as a green anti-corrosive agent.

Microparticulated whey protein can be used as a fat substitute in foods to enhance their nutritional value and improve their sensory and rheological characteristics. Microparticulation denatures whey proteins through heat treatment, followed by shear rate control to determine the aggregate sizes formed. The processing method used during microparticulation can modify the protein denaturation rate, which may enable the application of new proteins. This study sought to develop a methodology for quantifying whey protein fractions in commercial samples before and after microparticulation at different concentrations and physical states. The developed methodology proved to be applicable because of its selectivity, quantification, detection limits, and precision. The analyzed samples exhibited a higher denaturation rate for β-lactoglobulin than α-lactoalbumin; the denaturation rate varied among samples due to differences in the microparticulation process.

Valproic acid (VPA) is widely used as an important drug for the treatment of epilepsy, seizures, bipolar disorders, and migraines. However, its narrow therapeutic range lead to risks of unintentional poisoning and potential suicide. Symptoms of VPA intoxication include drowsiness, hyperactivity, confusion, ataxia, coma, and sometimes can mimic brain death. Severe cases necessitate intensive care observation and evaluation of blood/plasma concentrations to determine the severity of poisoning. Analytical methods are crucial for monitoring drugs in biological fluids. This review aimed to describe the extraction methods used for the analysis of VPA in human biological samples using gas chromatography. Among 19 studies reviewed, liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), liquid phase microextraction (LPME), and solid-phase microextraction (SPME) are the most used extraction methods. Considering the laborious nature and large sample volumes required for LLE and solid-phase extraction (SPE), more efficient microextraction methods are needed. LPME, dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME), air-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction (AALLME), and others offer promising alternatives. LPME, in particular, is favored ecologically due to reduced solvent usage compared to LLE. Novel approaches like dried blood spots (DBS) present emerging options for sample collection, helping in analytical and therapeutic monitoring contexts. Selection of extraction protocol hinges on method objectives, sample type, and laboratory capacity.

We report a facile hydrothermal method for the synthesis of niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) under two different temperatures, 120 °C (Nb2O5-120) and 150 °C (Nb2O5-150). The obtained materials were characterized by structural, optical and morphological techniques. Also, the photocatalytic properties of the Nb2O5 samples were evaluated in two reactions under ultraviolet (UVC) irradiation: degradation of methylene blue (MB) and indigo carmine (IC) dyes; and esterification of free fatty acids (FFA) present in waste cooking oil (WCO). The Nb2O5 was formed at different temperatures of synthesis, and the increase in temperature did not cause significant changes in the structural and optical characteristics, but resulted in an increased surface area of the synthesized materials. Both synthesized materials showed excellent efficiency for dye photodegradation. The sample Nb2O5-150 presented the best performance for the MB photodegradation, with almost 85% of the removal efficiency. In this case, the adsorption of MB molecules on the surface of the material was high due to the favorable electrostatic interaction and also because of its high surface area. For the IC photodegradation, the adsorption was insignificant, and both samples presented approximately 100% of the removal efficiency. These materials were also promising for the reduction of free fat acids in waste oil by photoesterification.

Low-cost lignocellulosic filters were made from soybean hulls (SH), sugarcane bagasse fibers (SBF), cellulose nanofibers (CNF), and Kraft-bleached pulp (BP) as renewable feedstocks and applied in Cu (II) and Cd (II) removal from aqueous medium. Filtration was performed with a vacuum pump; filtration times ranged from 3 to 1200 seconds. For the same filter, the best permeate flow was 13,333 L.h.m-2 for both cations. The best Cd (II) removal (77.2 %) was achieved within 7 seconds at a permeate flow of 5,714 L.h.m-2. The same filter was also the best at removing Cu (II) (46.5 %), which was achieved within 7 seconds at a permeate flow of 5,714 L.h.m-2, as well. This short time evidenced that a long contact time is not needed to achieve higher removal. The best filter was made of BP, CNF, and SH. The presence of SBF and SH increased the contact angle and decreased the solid free energy surface. By FTIR-ATR it was possible to verify with which groups present in the chemical structures of the filter components the Cd (II) and Cu (II) cations interacted best. These results demonstrate the potential use of lignocellulosic biomass for producing composites aimed at water decontamination.

Fish oil dietary supplements have been linked to various health benefits due to the high concentration of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (ω-3 PUFA). The potential use of attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy with partial least squares regression (PLSR) was assessed to determine the docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and ω-3 PUFA in commercial fish oil capsules taking as a reference 1H NMR spectroscopy values. Comparing the results achieved by interval PLS (iPLS), synergy interval PLS (siPLS), and backward interval PLS (biPLS) algorithms, it was found that siPLS provided the best results. The proposed method predicted DHA with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.990, root mean square error of cross-validation (RMSECV) of 0.625%, and root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) of 1.941. EPA (R2=0.976, RMSECV=0.789%, and RMSEP=2.795%) and ω-3 PUFA (R2=0.978, RMSECV=2.667%, and RMSEP=3.980%). The results indicated that ATR-FTIR and siPLS provided a robust method that could be employed in the analysis and quality control of fish oil supplement capsules. This method has the advantage of being simple, fast, and non-destructive for quantitative analysis.

NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) spectroscopy is a well-established technique for elucidating the structure and composition of Natural Products (NP). However, while NMR spectra offer qualitative insights, there is often a growing demand within the NP research community for quantitative analysis using NMR techniques. Unfortunately, this demand is sometimes met with misconceptions and lacks the methodological rigor typically associated with analytical procedures, particularly concerning validation and mandatory adjustments of quantitative NMR (qNMR) parameters. Therefore, this minireview highlights the practical approaches concerning preparation and validation for qNMR analyses of plant extracts. Specifically, we provide a concise protocol detailing experimental settings crucial for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of quantitative measurements. It is noteworthy that such guidance is often absent in existing literature, and our minireview wants to bridge this gap by offering clear methodological recommendations.

Non-plasma technologies are being extensively investigated for their potential to mitigate microbial growth through the production of various reactive species. Predominantly, studies utilise atmospheric non-thermal plasma to produce plasma-activated liquids. The advancement of plasma-liquid applications has led to the investigation of plasma-activated aerosols (PAAs). This study aimed to produce a rapid-prototyped plasma-activated aerosol setup and perform chemical and anti-bacterial characterisation on the resultant activated aerosols. The setup was produced using stereolithography 3D printing, and air was used as the carrier gas. The novel design of the device allowed for the direct production of PAAs without the prior generation of plasma-activated water and subsequent aerosolisation. The generated PAAs were assessed for nitrite, hydrogen peroxide and ozone content using colourimetric assays. Anti-bacterial efficacy was tested against three human pathogenic strains: Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enterica. It was observed that nitrite and ozone contact concentration increased with exposure time, yet no hydrogen peroxide was detected. The generated PAAs showed significant zones of no growth for all bacterial strains. These devices, therefore, show potential to be used as anti-bacterial disinfection technologies.

This review provides an overview of the recent progress in organic electrosynthesis in Brazil, ranging from 2013 to 2023. By highlighting the principles, applications, and limitations of various electrosynthetic methodologies, this article aims to contribute to the understanding of basic principles and stimulate research in this field in Brazil. Moreover, the limitations and challenges associated with organic electrosynthesis are covered. Factors such as electrode material selection, solvent effects, and reaction optimization are discussed, highlighting the need for further research and development to overcome these obstacles. Finally, future prospects are outlined.

Bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disruptor used in different commercial polymers, is a persistent pollutant commonly found in effluents. Conventional wastewater treatment processes have low chemical removal efficiency and are expensive. This work evaluated BPA removal using laccase enzyme produced from white rot fungus Pleurotus ostreatus. For the enzymatic production, residues of acai berry and pineapple were used as laccase inducers. The use of natural inducers led to a high enzyme production (1139 and 1031 U mL−1 to acai and pineapple, respectively). Bisphenol A was removed to a concentration lower than LOD (limit of detection) after 4 h. The degradation mechanism of BPA occurred by oxidation of methyl to hydroxymethyl group in a propane portion, with breakdown of the aromatic ring. The developed technology brought to the scene a new green, viable methodology, using vegetable waste, adding value to these residues and bringing an alternative to the BPA treatment.

The use of extracts rich in bioactive compounds is becoming increasingly common in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries for the production of functional products. Araticum is a potential fruit to be analyzed due to its content of phenolic compounds, carotenoids and vitamins, with antioxidant properties. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of ultrasound on total phenolic compounds, total carotenoids, ascorbic acid, color, turbidity and rheology in araticum juice. Response surface methodology based on a central composite design was applied. Araticum juice was subjected to sonication at amplitude levels ranging from 20 to 100 % of the total power (400 W) at a constant frequency of 20 kHz for different durations (2 to 10 min). Morphological analysis was conducted to observe microscopic particles, and viscosity and suitability to rheological models (Newtonian, Power Law, and Herschel-Bulkley) were assessed. The ultrasonic probe extraction method was compared to the control juice. According to the responses, using the desirability function, the optimal conditions for extraction were determined to be low power (low amplitude) applied in a short period of time or low power applied in a prolonged time. These conditions allowed an ultrasonic probe to act on releasing bioactive compounds without degrading them. All three rheological models were suitable, with the Power Law model being the most appropriate, exhibiting non-Newtonian pseudoplastic behavior.

The improper disposal of batteries has numerous consequences for the environment, since they contain potentially toxic metals that can be leached, infiltrating, and contaminating the soil layers, the groundwater, as well as the fauna and flora of nearby regions. Therefore, studies were conducted to simulate and analyze soil contamination by the release of potentially toxic metals from the incorrect disposal of alkaline batteries in the environment, in similar natural conditions, by doing leaching tests in fertilized soil resembling a landfill. Therefore, in this paper a simple experiment is proposed for sensitizing students toward the consequences of an incorrect disposal of batteries in the environment.

Abstract This study describes methodologies for extracting and isolating bergenin, a C-glucoside of 4-O-methylgallic acid found in some plants and it presents various in vitro and in vivo biological activities. Bergenin was previously obtained from the Pelthophorum dubim (Fabaceae) roots with a good yield. Conventional chromatographic procedures of the CHCl3 soluble fraction of the MeOH extract gave 3.62% of this glucoside. An HPLC/DAD method was also developed and validated for bergenin and its precursor, gallic acid quantifications. Microwave extractions with different solvents were tested to optimize the extraction of bergenin, varying the temperature and time. MAE (Microwave Assisted Extraction) was more efficient than conventional extraction procedures, giving a higher yield of bergenin per root mass (0.45% vs. 0.0839%). Molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) and non-imprinted polymer (NIP) based on bergenin as the template molecule, methacrylic acid, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate were synthesized and characterized by FTIR and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). Bergenin adsorption experiments using MIP and NIP followed by molecular imprinted solid phase extraction (MISPE) showed that MIP had a higher selectivity for bergenin than NIP. A dendrochronological study using the proposed method for detection and quantification of gallic acid and bergenin in five P. dubium growth rings of a 31-year-old heartwood and in the phelloderm and barks indicated that bergenin was more abundant in the 11–14th growth rings of the heartwood and decreased from the heartwood to the barks.

With the aging of the global population, neurodegenerative diseases are emerging as a major public health issue. The adoption of a less sedentary lifestyle has been shown to have a beneficial effect on cognitive decline, but the molecular mechanisms responsible are less clear. Here we provide a detailed analysis of the complex molecular, cellular, and systemic mechanisms underlying age-related cognitive decline and how lifestyle choices influence these processes. A review of the evidence from animal models, human studies, and postmortem analyses emphasizes the importance of integrating physical exercise with cognitive, multisensory, and motor stimulation as part of a multifaceted approach to mitigating cognitive decline. We highlight the potential of these non-pharmacological interventions to address key aging hallmarks, such as genomic instability, telomere attrition, and neuroinflammation, and underscore the need for comprehensive and personalized strategies to promote cognitive resilience and healthy aging.

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) create images by pitting a generator (G) against a discriminator (D) network, aiming to find a balance between the networks. However, achieving this balance is difficult because G is trained based on just one value representing D’s prediction, and only D can access image features. We introduce a novel approach for training GANs using explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) to enhance the quality and diversity of generated images in histopathological datasets. We leverage XAI to extract feature information from D and incorporate it into G via the loss function, a unique strategy not previously explored in this context. We demonstrate that this approach enriches the training with relevant information and promotes improved quality and more variability in the artificial images, decreasing the FID by up to 32.7% compared to traditional methods. In the data augmentation task, these images improve the classification accuracy of Transformer models by up to 3.81% compared to models without data augmentation and up to 3.01% compared to traditional GAN data augmentation. The Saliency method provides G with the most informative feature information. Overall, our work highlights the potential of XAI for enhancing GAN training and suggests avenues for further exploration in this field.

Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) peel is a potential source of bioactive phenolic compounds such as ellagic acid and α- and β-punicalagin. This work explores the efficiency of natural deep eutectic solvents combined with ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) for their extraction. Five NaDESs were evaluated by employing UAE (25 °C, for 50 min) to determine their total phenolic content (Folin–Ciocalteu assay) and ellagic acid and α- and β-punicalagin contents (high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-DAD)). The NaDES composed of choline chloride (ChCl) and glycerol (Gly) (1:2, molar ratio) was the most efficient in the UAE when compared with the rest of the NaDESs and water extracts. Therefore, ChCl:Gly was further evaluated using PLE at different temperatures (40, 80, 120 and 160 °C). The PLE-NaDES extract obtained at 80 °C for 20 min at 1500 psi exhibited the highest contents of ellagic acid and α- and β-punicalagin compared to the rest of the temperatures and PLE-water extracts obtained under the same extraction conditions. Combining UAE or PLE with a NaDES emerges as a sustainable alternative for extracting ellagic acid and α- and β-punicalagin from pomegranate peel.

The two-kidney, one-clip (2K1C) Goldblatt rodent model elicits a reduction in renal blood flow (RBF) in the clipped kidney (CK). The reduced RBF and oxygen bio-ability causes the accumulation of the tricarboxylic cycle intermediary, α-ketoglutarate, which activates the oxoglutarate receptor-1 (OXGR1). In the kidney, OXGR1 is abundantly expressed in intercalated cells (ICs) of the collecting duct (CD), thus contributing to sodium transport and electrolyte balance. The (pro)renin receptor (PRR), a member of the renin–angiotensin system (RAS), is a key regulator of sodium reabsorption and blood pressure (BP) that is expressed in ICs. The PRR is upregulated in 2K1C rats. Here, we tested the hypothesis that chronic reduction in RBF in the CK leads to OXGR1-dependent PRR upregulation in the CD and alters sodium balance and BP in 2K1C mice. To determine the role of OXGR1 in regulating the PRR in the CDs during renovascular hypertension, we performed 2K1C Goldblatt surgery (clip = 0.13 mm internal gap, 14 days) in two groups of male mice: (1) mice treated with Montelukast (OXGR1 antagonist; 5 mg/Kg/day); (2) OXGR1−/− knockout mice. Wild-type and sham-operated mice were used as controls. After 14 days, 2K1C mice showed increased systolic BP (SBP) (108 ± 11 vs. control 82 ± 5 mmHg, p < 0.01) and a lower natriuretic response after the saline challenge test. The CK group showed upregulation of erythropoietin, augmented α-ketoglutarate, and increased PRR expression in the renal medulla. The CK of OXGR1 knockout mice and mice subjected to the OXGR1 antagonist elicited impaired PRR upregulation, attenuated SBP, and better natriuretic responses. In 2K1C mice, the effect of reduced RBF on the OXGR1-dependent PRR upregulation in the CK may contribute to the anti-natriuretic and increased SBP responses.

The Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) process was investigated to enhance the adhesion of AA2024-O aluminum alloy with a polyetherimide (PEI) matrix composite, using oxy-fuel welding (OFW). A Central Composite Design (CCD) statistical model was used to optimize three independent parameters in PEO: immersion time (s), duty cycle (%), and electrolyte concentration (Na2B4O7·10H2O), aiming to achieve a maximum value of shear strength of the hybrid joint (in MPa). The hybrid joint without PEO treatment presented a resistance of 2.2 MPa while the best condition presented a resistance of 9.5 MPa, resulting in a value 4× higher than the untreated material, due to the characteristics of the coating, which presented a more hydrophilic surface, allowing better mechanical interlocking with the polymer matrix and resulting in mixed-mode failure (adhesive, cohesive, and light fiber). In addition to improving adhesion, the PEO treatment provided better corrosion resistance to the alloy, forming an inert aluminum oxide (Al2O3) coating, with an improvement of approximately 99.84% compared to the untreated alloy. The statistical design covers about 77.15% of the total variability of the PEO + welding process, with independent factors influencing around 48.4% of the variability.
