The cerebral ischemic stroke is a major type of stroke characterized by brain injury, neurological deficits, and cognitive impairments, which accounts for increased disability and mortality worldwide. The present study focusses to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of ononin against the ischemic stroke induced by ischemia–reperfusion (I/R) injury via suppression of I/R injury stimulated neuroinflammation in rat model. Animals were separated into four groups as Sham, I/R induced, I/R + ononin pretreated (10 mg/kg body weight), and I/R + ononin pretreated (20 mg/kg body weight). The ischemic stroke was stimulated in animals by middle artery occlusion method as described previously. The infarct volume, brain edema, and neurological deficits were studied by standard methods. The oxidative stress markers like SOD, CAT, GSH, GSH-Px, Cu/Zn-SOD, Mn-SOD, MDA, and acetylcholinesterase were assessed by previously described methods. The contents of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 were assessed using assay kits. The in vitro studies were performed using SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells. The level of Ononin given at 10 and 20 mg/kg body weight resulted in increase in water content, reduced volume of infarct, improved neurological deficit score, and exerted its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective efficacy against cerebral I/R injury-induced rats. Increase in proinflammatory cytokine expression was observed in cerebral I/R injury-stimulated rats. Oxygen glucose deprivation/ reoxygenation (OGD/R) injury showed reduction in cell viability of SH-SY5Y cells which was attenuated following treatment with ononin at varying concentrations. Ononin has reduced proinflammatory cytokine expression in vitro. Thus, ononin has successfully attenuated I/R injury-induced neuroinflammation in rats and thus minimized neuronal injury. Therefore, all the findings of the study depicts that ononin can thus be used as a beneficiary move toward treatment of cerebral I/R injury.

Al-Si casting alloys are the most commonly used materials for piston alloys. The coefficient of thermal expansion is the key property of a piston material for improving the overall performance and service life of an engine. In the present study, the relationship between the morphology of the excess silicon phase and the coefficient of thermal expansion of Al-Si binary casting alloys was discussed. Optical and scanning electron microscopy were utilized to observe the morphology of the excess silicon phase in the Al-Si binary casting alloys before and after solution aging treatment. The results showed that the morphology of the excess silicon phase significantly influenced the coefficient of thermal expansion of the Al-Si binary casting alloys. After solution aging treatment, the coefficient of thermal expansion of the Al-Si binary casting alloys increased due to the rounding and granulating of the excess silicon phase precipitated during the casting process and decreased due to the precipitation of the finely dispersed Si phase in the α-Al matrix. The change in the coefficient of thermal expansion depended on which of the two kinds of morphological transformation of the excess silicon phase is dominant.

Highly hydrophobic surface property is important for many applications, such as anticorrosion, antifogging, and antifouling. With regard to some practical applications, both mechanical endurance and thermal stability are essential. Here, we report a new method for making highly hydrophobic surfaces with simultaneously enhanced mechanical endurance and thermal stability. Such high-performance hydrophobic surfaces were prepared by coating electrospraying derived fluorinated SiO2 particles on various substrates, including glass slide, ceramic wafer, metal foil, and polymer sheet, with methyl silicone resin as the binder. Fluorinate silane was homogenously doped in the matrix of SiO2 particles, which can provide excellent protection effect. Meanwhile, the thermally stable methyl silicone resin can afford strong binding force between SiO2 particles and the substrates. Therefore, the hydrophobic surfaces created here possess both high mechanical endurance and excellent thermal stability.

Bismuth (Bi)-activated luminescence materials have attracted much attention for their tunable broad emissions ranging from a visible to near-infrared (NIR) region. However, it remains a challenge to regulate the Bi valence state and achieve NIR emission via a facile way. Here, we report the design and preparation of Ba3Sc4O9:Bi phosphors, which emit visible and NIR emissions simultaneously even prepared in the air condition. The self-reduction mechanism of Bi3+ species in Ba3Sc4O9 with a rigid crystal structure is illustrated based on the charge compensation model, and the coexistence of different Bi-active centers, Bi3+ for visible emission, while Bi+ and Bi0 for NIR emission, is confirmed by the spectroscopic data and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The enhanced NIR emission was further achieved through controlled reducing treatment and the related mechanism has also been clarified. This work paves a new way to control bismuth valence and tune the emission of Bi-based luminescence materials for emerging photonics applications.

Bi-Doped nitridated germanate glasses covering the whole NIR region from 800–1600 nm have attracted considerable attention due to their potential application in tunable fiber lasers and optical amplifiers. However, it remains challenging to regulate the luminescence behaviour of Bi because of the coexistence of multi-centers in the glasses. Here, we successfully regulated multi Bi NIR centers to obtain a flatter and ultra-broadband emission in nitridated germanate glasses. By varying the alkaline earth metal fluorides from MgF2 to BaF2, the glass structures were gradually depolymerized. A looser glass network, on one hand, promoted Bi in lower valences to be oxidized into Bi2+ and Bi3+, thus reducing the NIR emission intensity at ∼1150 and ∼1260 nm; on the other hand, it also enhanced the energy transfer from Bi+ to Bi0, which resulted in a relatively flatter emission band. In addition, the depolymerised glass structure could facilitate more nitride bonds, which are favorable for dispersing and stabilizing the new Bi NIR active centers related to germanate for ∼930 and ∼1490 nm emission. This investigation offers an efficient way to manipulate the multi-center luminescence behaviour of Bi in nitridated germanate glasses, and is beneficial to understand the mechanism of Bi NIR emission centers in glasses.

This report is on the synthesis by electrospinning of multiferroic core-shell nanofibers of strontium hexaferrite and lead zirconate titanate or barium titanate and studies on magneto-electric (ME) coupling. Fibers with well-defined core–shell structures showed the order parameters in agreement with values for nanostructures. The strength of ME coupling measured by the magnetic field-induced polarization showed the fractional change in the remnant polarization as high as 21%. The ME voltage coefficient in H-assembled films showed the strong ME response for the zero magnetic bias field. Follow-up studies and potential avenues for enhancing the strength of ME coupling in the core–shell nanofibers are discussed.

Background Lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) plays pivotal roles in several physiological processes and their disturbances are closely associated with various disorders. In this study, we described the development and validation of a reliable and simple flow injection analysis–tandem mass spectrometry (FIA‐MS/MS)‐based method using dried blood spots (DBS) for quantification of four individual LPC (C20:0, C22:0, C24:0, and C26:0). Methods Lysophosphatidylcholines were extracted from 3.2 mm DBS with 85% methanol containing 60 ng/ml internal standard using a rapid (30 min) and simple procedure. The analytes and the internal standard were directly measured by triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry in multiple reactions monitoring mode via positive electrospray ionization. Results Method validation results showed good linearity ranging from 50 to 2000 ng/ml for each LPC. Intra‐ and inter‐day precision and accuracy were within the acceptable limits at four quality control levels. Recovery was from 70.5% to 107.0%, and all analytes in DBS were stable under assay conditions (24 h at room temperature and 72 h in autosampler). The validated method was successfully applied to assessment of C20:0‐C26:0LPCs in 1900 Chinese neonates. C26:0‐LPC levels in this study were consistent with previously published values. Conclusion We propose a simple FIA‐MS/MS method for analyzing C20:0‐C26:0LPCs in DBS, which can be used for first‐tier screening., We proposed a reliable and simple flow injection analysis–tandem mass spectrometry (FIA‐MS/MS)‐based method using dried blood spots (DBS) for quantification of four individual LPC (C20:0, C22:0, C24:0, and C26:0). Low-expansion alloys are of great importance and can be used for the development of new aerospace materials. Herein, we report diverse rare earth quasicrystal alloys fabricated by the vacuum suction casting process. The effects of the addition of cerium (Ce) on the microstructure, thermal expansion properties and microhardness of the Al-Cu-Fe alloy were systematically investigated. This study discovered the tiny Al-Cu-Fe-Ce microstructure. A uniform distribution could be achieved after Ce addition amount is elevated. At the Ce addition amount of 1 at%, the lowest alloy thermal expansion coefficient was obtained. The alloy exhibited the maximum microhardness under these conditions. The microhardness of alloys containing 1 at% of Ce was approximately 2.4 times higher than the microhardness exhibited by alloys devoid of Ce additives. The coefficient of thermal expansion decreases by approximately 20%. The use of the suction casting process and the addition of an appropriate amount of Ce can potentially help design and develop Al-Cu-Fe-Ce alloys.

Xanthates are by far the most widely used collectors in the froth flotation beneficiation of sulfide ores. However, the xanthate production process suffers from low yield, low productivity, long reaction time and environmental pollution. To address these issues, an effective method was developed for the synthesis of xanthates using phase transfer catalyst. Sodium isobutyl xanthate was synthesized from isobutyl alcohol ((CH3)2CHCH2OH), sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and carbon disulfide (CS2) with dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) as solvent and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) and tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBAC) as phase transfer catalyst. The compound was characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectrum, 1H NMR and 13C NMR. The influencing factors on the content and yield of sodium isobutyl xanthate including phase transfer catalyst type, phase transfer catalyst dosage and reaction time were studied by single-factor experiments. The influencing factors on the product purity and yield including reaction temperature, solvent volume, material ratio and rotating speed were studied by orthogonal experiments. The results showed that when the amount of TBAC was 3.0%malcohol, the reaction temperature was 35 °C, the solvent volume was 3.5 Valcohol, the rotating speed was 180 rpm, the reaction time was 4 h and the material ratio was n[(CH3)2CHCH2OH]:n(NaOH):n(CS2) = 1:1:1.10, the product yield could be up to 86.66% and the product purity reached 82.56%.

Paper plays an important role in various aspects of human life. However, most of the paper materials are vulnerable to both flame and water, which seriously restrict their performance in many applications. Here, we report a new kind of flame-retardant paper with high-temperature-resistant hydrophobicity. This kind of paper was fabricated by vacuum filtration of electrospun fluorinated SiO2 fibers and methyl silicon resin. It is mechanically flexible. Its Young’s modulus is 94 MPa, similar to normal printing paper. The optimized paper demonstrated a water contact angle (WCA) of 151°, which can be maintained as high as 126° even after 30 min of annealing at the temperature of 600 °C. Finally, writing with inorganic ink can be performed on this paper with inhibited ink diffusion. The written paper can maintain its integrity after 5 min of firing by alcohol flame. The flame-retardant and hydrophobic paper here may extend the applications of paper in wide range of fields.

In the conventional fiber drawing process, the waveguide parameters (fiber core diameter, refractive index profile, numerical aperture) of the optical fiber are decided (with very limited perturbation range) once the optical and geometric properties of the preform are determined. In comparison, yttrium aluminosilicate (YAS) fibers prepared by “molten core method” (also termed as “melt-in-tube” method) reveal a unique fiber formation process. Although the previous works have shown that the element diffusion plays a significant role in the formation of YAS fiber, the description of this formation process is still vague and the properties of YAS fibers obtained by this method show low controllability in practice, which cannot be explained by elemental diffusion alone. Here, a new model for the formation mechanism of YAS fibers is proposed based on the experimental data, which involves the consideration of interfacial stress during the formation of YAS fibers. The relationship between the refractive index and the element distribution in the YAS fibers was studied. Structural simulation based on the molecular dynamics was also performed to demonstrate the formation mechanism of glassy YAS fiber core.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) exhibits aggressive behavior and high levels of metastasis owing to its complex heterogeneous structure and lack of specific receptors. Here, tumor cell membrane (CM)-coated bismuth/manganese oxide nanoparticles (NPs) with high indocyanine green (ICG) payload up to 50.6 wt% (mBMNI NPs) for targeted TNBC therapy are constructed. The extra-high drug load Bi@Bi2 O3 @MnOx NPs (honey-comb like structure) are formed by Kirkendall effect and electrostatic attraction. After modified with CM, they can home into tumor sites precisely, where they respond to internal overexpressed glutathione (GSH), releasing Mn2+ for chemodynamic therapy (CDT) with GSH depletion, while H2 O2 degrades into O2 enabling relief of tumor hypoxia. In response to external near-infrared irradiation, mBMNI NPs intelligently generate vigorous heat and single oxygen (1 O2 ) for photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) owing to high load. Importantly, O2 production and GSH consumption during the internal response reinforce external PDT, while the heat generated through PTT during the external response promotes internal CDT. The honeycomb-like structure with high ICG load and mutual reinforcement between internal and external response results in excellent therapeutic effects against TNBC.

ADP-ribosylation is a reversible and site-specific post-translational modification that regulates a wide array of cellular signaling pathways. Regulation of ADP-ribosylation is vital for maintaining genomic integrity, and uncontrolled accumulation of poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation triggers a poly(ADP-ribose) (PAR)–dependent release of apoptosis-inducing factor from mitochondria, leading to cell death. ADP-ribosyl-acceptor hydrolase 3 (ARH3) cleaves PAR and mono(ADP-ribosyl)ation at serine following DNA damage. ARH3 is also a metalloenzyme with strong metal selectivity. While coordination of two magnesium ions (MgA and MgB) significantly enhances its catalytic efficiency, calcium binding suppresses its function. However, how the coordination of different metal ions affects its catalysis has not been defined. Here, we report a new crystal structure of ARH3 complexed with its product ADP-ribose and calcium. This structure shows that calcium coordination significantly distorts the binuclear metal center of ARH3, which results in decreased binding affinity to ADP-ribose, and suboptimal substrate alignment, leading to impaired hydrolysis of PAR and mono(ADP-ribosyl)ated serines. Furthermore, combined structural and mutational analysis of the metal-coordinating acidic residues revealed that MgA is crucial for optimal substrate positioning for catalysis, whereas MgB plays a key role in substrate binding. Our collective data provide novel insights into the different roles of these metal ions and the basis of metal selectivity of ARH3 and contribute to understanding the dynamic regulation of cellular ADP-ribosylations during the DNA damage response.

We present a Chemistry and Structure Screen Integrated Efficiently (CASSIE) approach (named for Greek prophet Cassandra) to design inhibitors for cancer biology and pathogenesis. CASSIE provides an effective path to target master keys to control the repair-replication interface for cancer cells and SARS CoV-2 pathogenesis as exemplified here by specific targeting of Poly(ADP-ribose) glycohydrolase (PARG) and ADP-ribose glycohydrolase ARH3 macrodomains plus SARS CoV-2 nonstructural protein 3 (Nsp3) Macrodomain 1 (Mac1) and Nsp15 nuclease. As opposed to the classical massive effort employing libraries with large numbers of compounds against single proteins, we make inhibitor design for multiple targets efficient. Our compact, chemically diverse, 5000 compound Goldilocks (GL) library has an intermediate number of compounds sized between fragments and drugs with predicted favorable ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) and toxicological profiles. Amalgamating our core GL library with an approved drug (AD) library, we employ a combined GLAD library virtual screen, enabling an effective and efficient design cycle of ranked computer docking, top hit biophysical and cell validations, and defined bound structures using human proteins or their avatars. As new drug design is increasingly pathway directed as well as molecular and mechanism based, our CASSIE approach facilitates testing multiple related targets by efficiently turning a set of interacting drug discovery problems into a tractable medicinal chemistry engineering problem of optimizing affinity and ADME properties based upon early co-crystal structures. Optimization efforts are made efficient by a computationally-focused iterative chemistry and structure screen. Thus, we herein describe and apply CASSIE to define prototypic, specific inhibitors for PARG vs distinct inhibitors for the related macrodomains of ARH3 and SARS CoV-2 Nsp3 plus the SARS CoV-2 Nsp15 RNA nuclease.

Background Phe-restricted diets have been the basis of therapy for phenylketonurics; however, little is known how this treatment effects homeostasis of other important amino acids. This study aimed to describe blood amino acid patterns in neonates with phenylketonuria (PKU) and identify any effects of Phe restriction on these patterns in young children.Methods Neonate group (age 0-4 weeks): 45 PKU patients, 45 age-/sex-matched controls without PKU; 1-4 year-old group: 27 diet-treated PKU patients, 27 age-/sex-matched children without PKU. Concentrations of 11 amino acids were measured using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) performed on dried blood spots.Results Elevated blood phenylalanine (Phe), arginine (Arg), citrulline (Cit), valine (Val) and methionine (Met) concentrations were observed in PKU neonates relative to controls (Phe, Arg, Cit, Val: P < 0.001; Met: P < 0.05), of which Phe, Arg, and Met levels could be either partially or completely restored with dietary intervention. Diet had no effect on elevated Cit and Val. Decreased blood tyrosine (Tyr) and proline (Pro) concentrations were observed in PKU neonates compared to controls (P < 0.001). Both amino acids could be near completely restored to normal with dietary treatment. No significant differences in alanine (Ala), leucine (Leu), ornithine (Orn) and glycine (Gly) concentrations were found in the PKU neonates and 1-4 year-old groups (P > 0.05).Conclusions Blood amino acid homeostasis is disrupted in neonates and young children with PKU. Although dietary intervention adjusts amino acid homeostasis in the direction of a healthy equilibrium, complete restoration is not achieved. This persistent disruption may represent a clinically significant barrier to achieving the best possible therapy for those with PKU. Use of laboratory technologies such as LC-MS/MS enable characterization of persistent blood amino acid disequilibrium in the treated phenylketonuric. Testing of this kind presents opportunity for customized treatment feedback that may allow even greater optimization of therapy for neonates and children with PKU.

B-Rapidly Accelerated Fibrosarcoma (BRAF) mutations are found in about 50% of melanoma patients. Treatment with Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved BRAF and MAP/ERK kinase (MEK) inhibitors has improved progression free and overall survival of patients with BRAF mutant melanoma. However, all responders develop resistance typically within 1 year of treatment with these inhibitors. Evidence indicates that reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels are elevated after BRAF pathway inhibition treatment. We aim to decipher the role of mitochondrial antioxidant proteins relative to ROS levels and BRAF pathway inhibitor resistance. We observed BRAF mutant melanoma cells treated with the combination of a MEK inhibitor (trametinib) and a BRAF inhibitor (dabrafenib), exhibited elevated ROS levels, both in in vitro and in vivo melanoma models. We next generated trametinib- and dabrafenib-resistant (TDR) cells and found increased ROS levels after acquisition of resistance. An immunofluorescence experiment showed an increase of DNA damage in TDR cell lines. Furthermore, we observed that TDR cells increased superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2), an antioxidant, at both mRNA and protein levels, with the upregulation of the transcription factor Nuclear Factor (NF)-&kappa, B. Knockdown of SOD2 significantly reduced the growth of BRAF pathway inhibitor-resistant cells. In addition, the results indicate that TDR cells can be re-sensitized to BRAF pathway inhibitors by the ROS scavenger, N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC). Overall, these data indicate that BRAF pathway inhibitor-resistant cells can compensate for elevated ROS via increased expression of the antioxidant SOD2.

Sol-gel derived noble-metal-silica nanocomposites are very useful in many applications. Due to relatively low price, higher conductivity, and higher chemical stability of silver (Ag) compared with copper (Cu), Ag-silica has gained much more research interest. However, it remains a significant challenge to realize high loading of Ag content in sol-gel Ag-silica composite with high structural controllability and nanoparticles’ dispersity. Different from previous works by using multifunctional silicon alkoxide to anchor metal ions, here we report the synthesis of Ag-silica nanocomposite with high loading of Ag nanoparticles by employing acetonitrile bi-functionally as solvent and metal ions stabilizer. The electrical conductivity of the Ag-silica nanocomposite reached higher than 6800 S/cm. In addition, the Ag-silica nanocomposite could simultaneously possess high electrical conductivity and positive conductivity-temperature coefficient by properly controlling the loading content of Ag. Such behavior is potentially advantageous for high-temperature devices (like phosphoric acid fuel cells) and inhibiting the thermal-induced increase of devices’ internal resistance. The strategy proposed here is also compatible with block-copolymer directed self-assembly of mesoporous material, spin-coating of film and electrospinning of nanofiber, making it more charming in various practical applications.

Trivalent bismuth (Bi3+) activated blue-emitting materials have attracted considerable attention because they effectively avoid the reabsorption demerits compared to traditional rare earth activators. Unfortunately, these materials are often plagued by mismatch to the near-ultraviolet (n-UV) chip and short blue emission peak as well as low n-UV absorption efficiency. In this work, we successfully designed a blue-emitting phosphor SrZnSO:Bi3+ with a wide n-UV excitation band ranging from 310 to 400 nm and an ideal blue emission band centered at 460 nm. Furthermore, SrZnSO:0.03Bi3+ phosphor exhibits an extraordinary absorption efficiency of 73.21% ascribed to the intense absorption of the matrix and Bi3+ in the n-UV region. The relationship between the excitation peak position of Bi3+-related phosphors and the size of the polyhedron were also summarized. A white light-emitting diode (WLED) was fabricated using a 370 nm n-UV chip, the composition-optimized sample SrZnSO:0.03Bi3+ and the commercial phosphors. Interestingly, the temperature-sensitive luminescence behavior is beneficial to the performance improvement of the WLED. The WLED demonstrates a warm white light whose Commission Internationale de L′Eclairage (CIE) coordinates are (0.3817, 0.3885), outstanding color rendering index of 93.4 and low correlated color temperature of 4051 K at current of 80 mA. The study suggests that SrZnSO:Bi3+ blue emitting phosphor has great potential in LED-based applications. Also inspires researchers to explore Bi3+-related phosphors with low energy excitation band and high absorption efficiency to develop high-quality n-UV pumped WLEDs.

The novel Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19) has led to a world-wild pandemic. The replication of SARS-CoV-2 RNA genome involves the core replication-transcription complex (RTC, nsp12-nsp7-nsp8) and the proofreading complex (nsp14-nsp10) that can correct mismatched base pairs during replication. Structures and functions of SARS-CoV-2 RTC have been actively studied, yet little is known about SARS-CoV-2 nsp14-nsp10. Here, we purified, reconstituted, and characterized the SARS-CoV-2 nsp14-nsp10 proofreading nuclease in vitro. We show that SARS-CoV-2 nsp14 is activated by nsp10, functioning as a potent RNase that can hydrolyze RNAs in the context of single- and double-stranded RNA and RNA/DNA hybrid duplex. SARS-CoV-2 nsp14-nsp10 shows a metal-dependent nuclease activity but has different metal selectivity from RTC. While RTC is activated by Ca2+, nsp14-nsp10 is completely inhibited. Importantly, the reconstituted SARS-CoV-2 nsp14-nsp10 efficiently removed the A:A mismatch at the 3′-end of the primer, enabling the stalled RTC to restart RNA replication. Our collective results confirm that SARS-CoV-2 nsp14-nsp10 functions as the RNA proofreading complex in SARS-CoV-2 replication and provide a useful foundation to understand the structure and function of SARS-CoV-2 RNA metabolism.

This report is on strain control of magnetic order parameters in 50 nm epitaxial NiFe2O4 (NFO) films grown on (001), (110), and (111) SrTiO3 (STO) single-crystal substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The related in-plane strains for NFO films on (001), (110), and (111) STO substrates are found to be ―1.36 %, 1.35 %, and 1.52 %, respectively, where the lattice mismatch between film and substrate is as high as 6.7 %. Our analysis of magnetization and ferromagnetic resonance on all the NFO films reveals the presence of a uniaxial anisotropy field, which is perpendicular to the film plane. The anisotropy field decreases with the increase of strain in NFO films. Specifically, NFO films on STO (111) and STO (001) have the lowest and highest uniaxial anisotropy fileds of 1.4 kOe and 6.1 kOe, respectively. These experimental values of anisotropy field are a factor of 5–10 times smaller than those of the calculated ones due to the film defects induced by the high lattice mismatch. The studies of magnetic anisotropy of spinel ferrite films are of interest for spintronics and microwave devices.

The evolution of the microstructure and the variation in the thermal expansion properties of the Al 63 Cu 25 Fe 12 alloy by the addition of different amounts of cerium (Ce) are investigated by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Herein, a new series of quasicrystal alloys containing Ce are prepared. Results revealed that the Al 63 Cu 25 Fe 12 alloy contains icosahedral quasicrystal phase (I-phase), λ − Al 13 Fe 4 phase, β − Al 0.5 Fe 0.5 phase and Al 2 Cu 3 phase. The addition of Ce is confirmed to lead to grain refinement, formation of the Al 13 Ce 2 Cu 13 phase, disappearance of the λ − Al 13 Fe 4 phase. Furthermore, the area fraction of the I-phase in the alloy is confirmed to reach the maximum value, and the linear expansion coefficient of the alloy is the lowest due to the addition of Ce of up to 1 at%. The addition of Ce can reduce the linear expansion coefficient of the Al 63 Cu 25 Fe 12 alloy by ∼20%. The contribution of Ce will render better prospects for the application of Al-Cu-Fe-Ce materials.

However, its role in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unclear. Our study showed that PDGF-D was highly expressed in CRC tissues and was positively associated with the clinicopathological features. Down-regulation of PDGF-D inhibited the tumor growth, migration and angiogenesis of SW480 cells in vitro and in vivo . Whereas up-regulation of PDGF-D promoted the malignant behaviors of HCT116 cells. Moreover, PDGF-D up-regulated the expression of Notch1 and Twist1 in CRC cells. In addition, PDGF-D expression promoted Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT), which was accompanied with decreased E-cadherin and increased Vimentin expression. Consistently, PDGF-D, Notch1, and Twist1 are obviously up-regulated in transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) treated HCT116 cells. Since Notch1 and Twist1 play an important role in EMT and tumor progression, we examined whether there is a correlation between Notch1 and Twist1 in EMT status. Our results showed that up-regulation of Notch1 was able to rescue the effects of PDGF-D down-regulation on Twist1 expression in SW480 cells, whereas down-regulation of Notch1 reduced Twist1 expression in HCT116 cells. Furthermore, we found that Twist1 promoted EMT and aggressiveness of CRC cells. These results suggest that PDGF-D promotes tumor growth and aggressiveness of CRC, moreover, down-regulation of PDGF-D inactivates Notch1/Twist1 axis, which could reverse EMT and prevent CRC progression.

A new investigation on the variation rule of the structure, morphology, chemical composition and photocatalytic performance of bismuth oxyiodide synthesized by solvothermal method as a function of reaction conditions was performed here. The composition and morphology of the product could be determined by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The results revealed that the particle size together with content of iodide in bismuth oxyiodide decrease with the increase of the concentration of reaction precursors. Hollow Bi 4 O 5 I 2 microsphere with specific surface area as high as 120.88 m 2 g −1 can be easily synthesized when the concentration of the reaction precursors finally increased to 62.5 mM. Photocatalytic water purification performance of the as-prepared samples was evaluated by using Rhodamine B (RhB) as a model contaminant. The results revealed that the hollow Bi 4 O 5 I 2 exhibited the best performance among all the bismuth oxyodide synthesized here for the degradation of RhB under visible light irradiation. Meanwhile, the formation mechanism of the hierarchical hollow structure of bismuth oxyiodide was investigated by the dissolution-recrystallization mechanism.

Nanofibers are characterized with unique electronic, magnetic and optical properties, due to their extremely high aspect ratio and large specific surface area. Assembly of nanofibers with predesigned macro architectures is a key step toward practical applications. Herein, we demonstrate the scalable oriented assembly of nanofibers based on electrospinning, and explore their potential application in constructing optically anisotropic films. By the post soaking-and-drying approach, the nonwoven films assembled by oriented polymer nanofibers can be readily converted to flexible films with high transparency, which show optical transmission contrast exceeding 0.9 in the visible to near infrared region. The method for preparation of optically anisotropic films proposed here circumvents the sophisticated dye-doping and thermal drawing processes which are inevitable in conventional approaches. Considering the scalability potential of the electrospinning technique, the method demonstrated here is promising for industrial production of film polarizers.

Sepsis, frequently caused by infection of bacteria, is considered as an uncontrollable systematic inflammation response syndrome (SIRS). Maresin 1 (Mar1) is a new proresolving mediator with potent anti-inflammatory effect in several animal models. However, its effect in sepsis is still not investigated. To address this question, we developed sepsis model in BALB/c mice by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) with or without Mar1 treatment. Our data showed that Mar1 markedly improved survival rate and decreased the levels of proinflammatory cytokines in CLP mice such as interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-1β (IL-1β). Furthermore, Mar1 reduced serum level of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and enhanced the bacteria clearance in mice sepsis model. Moreover, Mar1 attenuated lung injury and decreased level of alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), creatinine (Cre), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) in serum in mice after CLP surgery. Treatment with Mar1 inhibited activation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κb) pathway. In conclusion, Mar1 exhibited protective effect in sepsis by reducing LPS, bacteria burden in serum, inhibiting inflammation response, and improving vital organ function. The possible mechanism is partly involved in inhibition of NF-κb activation.

Electrospinning-derived nanofibrous films functionalized by photocatalysts have been extensively studied in the applications of environmental remediation. In this investigation, we propose a simple strategy for preparation of flexible and chemically stable nanofibrous films with high photocatalytic efficiency. Specifically, SiO 2 nanofibrous film modified with Bi 2 WO 6 nanoparticles was studied as a representative. Flexible SiO 2 nanofibers were derived through sol–gel and electrospinning techniques. By simple soaking in precursor solution of Bi 2 WO 6 and calcination, the SiO 2 nanofibrous film was functionalized by Bi 2 WO 6 nanoparticles, forming hierarchically porous composite film. Micro morphology, mechanical property and photocatalytic performance were tuned via changing the concentration of the soaking solution. Photocatalytic removal of organic pollutant from water was performed using RhB (Rhodamine B) as a model. The strategy proposed here is also widely applicable for preparation of composite films modified with other kinds of photocatalysts. SiO 2 –Bi 2 MoO 6 , SiO 2 –TiO 2 and SiO 2 –CuO composite films were prepared in a similar way to demonstrate the versatility of the proposed preparation strategy.

OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes of the iodine value quantified on the Couinaud segments measured in port-venous phase using the iodine-mixed technique of contrast-enhanced dual-source dual-energy computed tomography (CT) scanning in different Child-Pugh stages of hepatitis B-induced liver cirrhosis. METHODS Patients clinically diagnosed with hepatitis B-induced cirrhosis were prospectively engaged in our study. Each patient underwent multiphase iodine agent contrast-enhanced dual-source dual-energy CT scanning, and then the iodine-mixed imaging of port-venous phase was postprocessed. Iodine concentration was obtained for each segment based on the Couinaud segments. The volume of each segment and the total of the liver were measured and calculated using the postprocessing software of volume. All the cirrhosis patients were grouped into 3 subgroups based on the Child-Pugh stage method. Patients without cirrhosis were engaged for the control group. The iodine concentration, volume, and iodine storage among groups were analyzed by SPSS version 19.0. Single energy was used for the nonenhanced phase scanning, which was used for the radiation dosage comparison with dual-energy CT scanning. RESULTS Two hundred three patients were ultimately enrolled in our study, including 148 patients with cirrhosis (Child A, 69; Child B, 51; Child C, 28) and 55 patients without cirrhosis as control subjects. The total volume and iodine storage of cirrhosis group were smaller than those of the control group (P < 0.001). Compared with the control group, the iodine concentration in each segment decreased with progression of cirrhosis. The volume, iodine concentration, and iodine storage of the right hepatic lobe and left medial segment decreased with cirrhosis severity (P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the volume of right hepatic lobe between Child C group and Child B group, whereas the iodine storage of Child C group was lower than that of Child B group (P < 0.05). The volume and iodine storage of left lateral segment increased with the progression of liver cirrhosis in the Child A and Child B groups (P < 0.05), whereas there was no statistical difference between the Child B and Child C groups, and the iodine storage in the Child C group was lower than that of the Child B group (P < 0.05). The radiation dose of dual-energy scanning was lower than that of single-energy scanning (P < 0.001). The iodine concentration 1.512 mg/mL on the left medial segment reached the most optimal evaluation on cirrhosis, with a sensitivity of 100%, specificity of 0.722, and area under the curve of 0.914. CONCLUSIONS Iodine concentration in portal phase measurement can evaluate and reflect the severity of cirrhosis. Iodine content segmental quantification can analyze the changes of the liver storage with a progression of cirrhosis. Dual-energy scanning reduced the radiation damage in patients and is valuable for a further study and clinical application.

Lightweight and flexible energy storage devices are urgently needed to persistently power wearable devices, and lithium-sulfur batteries are promising technologies due to their low mass densities and high theoretical capacities. Here we report a flexible and high-energy lithium-sulfur full battery device with only 100% oversized lithium, enabled by rationally designed copper-coated and nickel-coated carbon fabrics as excellent hosts for lithium and sulfur, respectively. These metallic carbon fabrics endow mechanical flexibility, reduce local current density of the electrodes, and, more importantly, significantly stabilize the electrode materials to reach remarkable Coulombic efficiency of >99.89% for a lithium anode and >99.82% for a sulfur cathode over 400 half-cell charge-discharge cycles. Consequently, the assembled lithium-sulfur full battery provides high areal capacity (3 mA h cm−2), high cell energy density (288 W h kg−1 and 360 W h L−1), excellent cycling stability (260 cycles), and remarkable bending stability at a small radius of curvature (, Lightweight and flexible energy storage devices are needed to persistently power wearable devices. Here the authors employ metallized carbon fabrics as hosts for sulfur and lithium to achieve flexibility, electrochemical stability and high energy density in a lithium-sulfur battery.

Plateau-Rayleigh instability describes the infinite falling stream of fluid breaks into smaller droplets. With the development of nanotechnology, more and more attention is being drawn to Plateau-Rayleigh instability. This surface tension-driven instability performs well in the preparation of the nanoparticles, especially in photonics applications, such as optical micro-resonators in nano-biosensing systems. In this article, we mainly adopt the thermal fluid coupling method. The effect of temperature field on instability is studied with the aid of numerical simulation. In addition, the radius of the inner fluid column, the thickness of the outer fluid, and the temperature gradient are also studied to explore how the factors influence the Plateau-Rayleigh instability. The wavelength of the instability is characterized by droplet diameter, which is formed through the process caused by Plateau-Rayleigh instability.

Nanofibers functionalized by semiconductor nanocrystals are drawing increasing interest, due to their widespread applications in the fields of new energy development, environment protection and chemical sensing, etc. Herein, we demonstrate a simple approach to prepare CuO/SiO2 nanocomposite materials. The flexible SiO2 nanofibers were prepared via the sol–gel electrospinning techniques. CuO nanocrystals were grafted on the surface of SiO2 nanofibers by simply soaking and post-calcination. Micromorphology, structure and mechanical strength of SiO2/CuO nanocomposite fibers were investigated by SEM, TEM and stress–strain test. Photocatalytic water purification ability of SiO2/CuO nanofibers was evaluated by employing rhodamine B as a model pollutant. Our results indicated that the SiO2/CuO nanofibers were flexible, thermally resistant and photocatalytic reactive, which promise the potential application in environmental remediation.

Microscopic structure and photo-responsive characters are two important facets that dominate the synthetic performance of photocatalysts in environment remediation. In the present investigation, we report the simultaneous tailoring of these two facets toward improving the water purification performance of TiO2 based photocatalyst. Electrospinning-derived TiO2 nanofibers were decorated with the visible-light responsive BiOI nanosheets via a simple hydrothermal reaction approach, constructing heterostructured composite fibers. The obtained hierarchical TiO2@BiOI fibers demonstrated improved reactivity toward decomposition of Rhodamine B in the visible-light range over the pristine TiO2 nanofibers, meanwhile possessed high recycling convenience. The mechanism for advancement of the photocatalytic reactivity of the TiO2@BiOI fibers was elucidated by analyzing the results of photoluminescence and transient photocurrent response.

Silicon carbide (SiC) fiber-reinforced SiC matrix composites are inherently multifunctional materials. In addition to their primary function as a structural material, the electric properties of the SiC/SiC composites could be used for the sensing and monitoring of in situ damage nucleation and evolution. To detect damage and use that information to further predict the useful life of a particular component, it is necessary to establish the relationship between damage and electrical resistance change. Here, two typical SiC/SiC composites, melt infiltrated (MI), and chemical vapor infiltrated (CVI) woven SiC/SiC composites, were tested to establish the relationship between the electrical response and mechanical damage in unload–reload tensile hysteresis tests. Compared to the 55% resistance increase seen for CVI composites, the MI SiC/SiC composites exhibit a maximum resistance change in 450% in response to mechanical loading (damage), which is the highest sensitivity known among various composites. An analytic model accounting for fiber breakage and matrix cracks was developed to link the electrical resistance to mechanical damage in the composites. The predictions from the models agree well with the experimental data for both composites with high and low conductive matrices. The residual resistance change after unloading is also correlated to the loading history by the analytical relationship. This study demonstrates that resistance change is sensitive to damage in a predictable manner and can be used to improve the reliability of damage assessment of SiC/SiC composites.

Structural design is of great importance to the performance of photocatalysts in environmental remediation. Therefore, micro/nanofibrous morphology and nanoporous local structures have been found to be beneficial to improve the photocatalytic activity. In this investigation, we report the design and fabrication of flexible and thermal stable nanoporous SiO2–TiO2 composite fibers as efficient photocatalysts. Combining electrospinning and modified Stober techniques, core-shell and mesoporous SiO2 fibers with high flexibility were fabricated and employed as the scaffold for supporting TiO2 nanoparticles. A nanoporous shell of TiO2 nanoparticles was then muffled over the SiO2 fibers to form core@dual-shell SiO2–TiO2 composite fibers with hierarchically porous structure, which were conveniently patterned into a nonwoven, recyclable film. This nonwoven film exhibits better photocatalytic activity for Rhodamine B degradation under UV irradiation compared with some other TiO2-based materials reported in recent years.

We report on a red-emitting ScVO4:Bi3+ phosphor which does not show excitation at energies below 2.88 eV (430 nm). X-ray diffraction, time-resolved, and quantitative photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy were employed to characterize relations between crystal structure and luminescence properties of the material. Results show that incorporation of Bi3+ renders the blue photoemission of blank ScVO4 to red. Dynamic luminescence analysis between 10 and 300 K reveals a complicated dependence of energy transfer from VO43– groups to Bi3+ ions and population redistribution of 3P1 and 3P0 of Bi3+ on temperature. This reflects in distinct changes in the luminescence decay functions. That is, a dramatic decrease of Bi3+ luminescence lifetime occurs from hundreds to only several microseconds. Density functional theory is employed to reveal how the unusual red Bi3+ luminescence comes, and results indicate that the perturbation of oxygen vacancies which is generated readily when bismuth precipitates into ScVO4 is the re...

The trivalent green element of bismuth, when doped into different compounds, can produce multiple emissions in ultraviolet, blue, green or even yellow spectral regimes. The emission adjustability comes from the susceptibility of bismuth naked 6s electrons to the crystal field particularly surrounding Bi3+. However, this has never been observed in a single compound. In this work, we report that broadly tunable bismuth emission indeed occurs even within the same host (CaMoO4) when the local microenvironment around Bi3+ is modified by intentional introduction of alkali ions. As the radius of the selected alkali ion decreases, the emission regularly blue-shifts from 586 to 554 nm, and its intensity is enhanced greatly. For instance, the integrated intensity for the Li+ and Bi3+ codoped sample is 4.46 times stronger than the Bi3+ single-doped sample upon excitation at 300 nm. Low-temperature photoluminescence spectra surprisingly reveal that energy transfer can partially take place from the MoO42– group to Bi3+ at lower temperature when excited into the charge transfer state of the MoO42– group, however, this does not occur at higher temperature. The mechanism needs further study. Dynamic luminescence analysis between 10 and 300 K implies a population dependence of the excited states 3P0 and 3P1 on temperature that is responsible for the evolution of the Bi3+ emission lifetime with temperature.

Here, we report for the first time the optical properties of Bi 2+ and Tm 3+ co-doped germanate glasses and elucidate the potential of this material as substrates to improve the performance of CdTe solar cell. A strong emission peak at 800 nm is observed under the excitation of 450–700 nm in this material. The energy transfer processes from the transitions of Bi 2+ [ 2 P 3/2 (1) → 2 P 1/2 ]: Tm 3+ [ 3 H 6 → 3 H 4 ] are investigated by time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy. A cover glass exhibiting an ultra-broadband response spectrum covering the entire solar visible wavelength region is suggested to enhance the conversion efficiency of CdTe solar cells significantly.

A novel phosphor with near-infrared (NIR) long persistent luminescence, SrSnO3:Bi2+ was successfully synthesized by traditional solid-state reaction. The phosphor shows deep red-NIR persistent luminescence with a broad emission band from 700 to 900 nm peaking at 808 nm, as well as a persistence time of >30 min. This phosphor has broken the domination of conventional Cr3+, Mn2+ and Mn4+-activated long persistent phosphors and provides a new perspective on the NIR phosphorescence of Bi-doped long phosphorescent phosphors. Meanwhile, the characteristic operational waveband offer the possibility of potentially being applied in vivo bio-imaging of this new NIR phosphorescent material.

The remarkable mechanical and electronic properties and large surface area of carbon nanotube make it an excellent candidate for energy and environment applications such as solar cells, fuel cells, batteries, and composite structures for windmill blades. One of issues that determine the useful life and hence reliability of the energy devices and structures is the interface between the nanotube and matrix/current collector that the nanotube embedded in. Here, we developed a simple method to quantitatively measure the interfacial strength of nanotube/matrix interfaces. Instead of nanoscale measurement which requires nanomanipulation, a micropillar was imprinted onto a composite surface on which nanotubes stick out with a given protruding length. The polymer pillar was then pulled out from the surface, and the maximum force was measured, based on which interfacial energy was calculated by finite element methods and analysis formula. The results show that the interfacial friction stress between nanotube and polymer matrix is in the range of 36-51MPa, which is consistent with the measurement by other methods.

The work of adhesion at the interface of electrospun membrane and rigid substrate is measured by a shaft-loaded blister test (SLBT). Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) were electrospun with an average fiber diameter of 333 ± 59 nm. Commercial cardboard with inorganic coating was used to provide a model substrate for adhesion tests. In SLBT, the elastic response PVDF was analyzed and its adhesion energy measured. The average value of the adhesion work is 206 ± 26 mJ/m(2). Elastic modulus of electrospun membrane obtained by SLBT is found to be 23.42 ± 2.69 MPa, which is consistent with the value obtained from standard tensile tests. The results show SLBT presented a viable methodology for evaluating the adhesion energy of electrospun polymer fabrics.

Broadband spectral conversion from visible light to near-infrared radiation in Ce3+–Nd3+/Yb3+ codoped yttrium aluminum garnet is reported. Excitation, emission spectra, and decay curves have been measured to prove the energy transfer from Ce3+ to Nd3+ or Yb3+. The energy transfer efficiencies have been estimated, and the mechanisms of the energy transfer between Ce3+ and Nd3+/Yb3+ have been proposed. Ce3+–Nd3+ codoped YAG can obtain more effective emission in the desired near-infrared region (around 1100 nm) through broadband conversion, showing potential application to improve the conversion efficiency of Si solar cells.

Utilizing convenient electrospinning techniques, CaTiO3 : Pr3+, SrAl2O4 : Eu2+,Dy3+ and CaAl2Si2O8 : Eu2+,Dy3+ nanofibers with afterglow emission were fabricated. X-ray diffraction (XRD), micro-Raman spectrometry (Raman) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the composition and morphology of electrospun nanofibers. The results showed that calcined samples were super-long nanofibers with a diameter of hundreds of nanometres. Fluorescence and afterglow properties were investigated by spectrofluorometery, which indicated that CaTiO3 : Pr3+, SrAl2O4 : Eu2+,Dy3+ and CaAl2Si2O8 : Eu2+,Dy3+ nanofibers show characteristic red, green and blue afterglow emission. The electrospun nanofibers with afterglow emissions of the three primary colors are expected to be applied in the field of miniature lighting, biological markers, multi-wavelength photo-detection, etc.

Ba0.7Sr0.3TiO3 (BST) thin films were deposited on Pt and SrRuO3(SRO)/Pt hybrid bottom electrodes by radio frequency magnetron sputtering. X-ray analysis indicated that both films were polycrystalline. Dielectric measurements showed that the films on SRO/Pt hybrid bottom electrode had lower dielectric constant and loss than the films on single Pt and the dielectric properties were frequency-independent. The leakage current density of Ba0.7Sr0.3TiO3 thin films on hybrid bottom electrode was also lower. Leakage mechanism investigations showed that the contact between the electrode-film interfaces of thin films on SRO/Pt hybrid bottom electrode was ohmic. Based on the results, the effects of SRO/Pt hybrid bottom electrode on the crystallization and electrical properties of BST thin films were discussed.

Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly (vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) nanofibers embedding Ag nanoparticles (5–18 nm) have been prepared successfully by electrospinning at room temperature. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Fourier transform IR spectra (FTIR), and Raman scattering were used to characterize the structure and properties of Ag nanoparticle-embedded PVA and PVP nanofibers before and after heat treatment at different temperature. The antibacterial activity of Ag nanoparticle-embedded PVP nanofibers after heat treatment was also tested, which indicated that the biological activity of yeast cells was effectively inhibited by these Ag nanoparticle-embedded PVP nanofibers.

Utilizing Maker fringe (MF) method, second-harmonic generation (SHG) has been observed within the GeS2–Ga2S3–CdS pseudo-ternary glasses through thermal/electrical poling technique. The SHG phenomenon was considered to be the result of breakage of the glassy macroscopic isotropy originated from the reorientations of dipoles during the thermal/electrical poling process. Under the same poling condition conducted with 5 kV and 280 °C for 30 min, the maximum value of second-order nonlinear susceptibility χ(2) of the poled (100−x)GeS2·x(0.5Ga2S3·0.5CdS) glasses was obtained to be ≈4.36 pm/V when the value of x is equal to 30. Nonlinear dependence of χ(2) on compositions of these glasses can be well explained according to the theory related to the reorientation of dipoles.
