Background: Demethylzeylasteral (ZST93), a pharmacologically active triterpenoid monomer extracted from Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F (TWHF), has been reported to exert antineoplastic effects in several cancer cell types. However, the anti-tumour effects of ZST93 in human colorectal cancer (CRC) cells are unknown. Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antitumor effects of ZST93 on cell cycle arrest, disruptive autophagic flux, apoptotic cell death and enhanced chemosensitivity to 5-FU in human CRC cells. Methods: 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, colony formation assay, flow cytometry, immunoblotting, immunofluorescence, 5-ethynyl-20-deoxyuridine (EdU) incorporation assay and autophagy analysis were used to evaluate the effects of ZST93 on cell viability, cell cycle progression, apoptosis and autophagy in two human CRC cell lines. Moreover, ZST93’s combined anti-tumour effects with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) were evaluated. Results: ZST93 inhibited CRC cell proliferation and growth. It was responsible for blocked cell cycle transition by arresting CRC cells in the G0/G1 phase via down-regulation of CDK4, CDK6, Cyclin D1 and c-MYC. Moreover, ZST93 induced suppressive autophagic flux and caspase-3-dependent cell death, which was further strengthened by the blocking of the autophagy process using chloroquine (CQ). Moreover, ZST93 enhanced CRC cells’ chemosensitivity to 5-FU via modulation of autophagy and apoptosis. Conclusion: ZST93 exerts anti-tumor effects via disruptive autophagic flux and apoptotic cell death in human CRC cells and increases cell chemosensitivity to 5-FU. These results provide insights into the utilisation of ZST93 as an adjuvant or direct autophagy inhibitor and suggest ZST93 as a novel therapeutic strategy for treating CRC.

Water pollution caused by heavy metals poses a serious threat to the ecosystem and human survival safety and becomes a major obstacle to human health, economic and socially sustainable development. Among the various treatment techniques for water remediation, adsorption is an efficient method due to its high capacity, low cost, and simplicity. Thallium (Tl) is highly toxic to mammals and its removal from water is gaining increasingly prominent attention. In this study, three fungal strains (Fusarium sp. FP, Arthrinium sp. FB and Phoma sp. FR) were tested for removal of Tl(I) from an aqueous solution and showed excellent removal performance. The prepared inactive fungal strains were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, and XPS analysis. The effects of pH, contact time, biomass and reaction temperature on the removal efficiency of Tl(I) were systematically investigated. The results indicated that the adsorption isotherm data fit well with the Langmuir model, and the pseudo-second-order model was more consistent with the kinetic data description. The maximum adsorption capacity of the fungal strain (Fusarium sp. FP, Arthrinium sp. FB and Phoma sp. FR) for Tl(I) was found to be 94.69 mg/g, 66.97 mg/g and 52.98 mg/g, respectively. The thermodynamic data showed that the sorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The present study showed that the inactive fungal strains could be a promising adsorbent material for Tl(I) removal.

Strain-sensitive and conductive hydrogels have attracted extensive research interest due to their potential applications in various fields, such as healthcare monitoring, human–machine interfaces and soft robots. However, low electrical signal transmission and poor tensile properties still limit the application of flexible sensing hydrogels in large amplitude and high frequency motion. In this study, a novel ionic liquid segmental polyelectrolyte hydrogel consisting of acrylic acid (AAc), 1-vinyl-3-butylimidazolium bromide (VBIMBr) and aluminum ion (Al3+) was prepared by molecular design and polymer synthesis. The cationic groups and amphiphilicity of ionic liquid chain segments effectively improve the tensile behavior of the polyelectrolyte hydrogel, with a maximum tensile strength of 0.16 MPa and a maximum breaking strain of 604%. The introduction of ionic liquid segments increased the current carrying concentration of polyelectrolyte hydrogel, and the conductivity reached the initial 4.8 times (12.5 S/m), which is a necessary condition for detecting various amplitude and high frequency limb movements. The flexible electronic sensor prepared by this polyelectrolyte hydrogel efficiently detects the movement of different parts of the human body stably and sensitively, even in extreme environment (−20 °C). These outstanding advantages demonstrate the great potential of this hydrogel in healthcare monitoring and wearable flexible strain sensors.

Feces are enriched with microRNAs (miRNAs) that shape the gut microbiota. These miRNAs are differentially expressed in the feces of healthy and diseased subjects. However, whether fecal miRNAs in subjects with inflammatory bowel diseases are involved in regulating microbiota composition and whether they have any beneficial effects remains unknown. Here, we studied the fecal microbiome composition and miRNA abundance in mice with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis and mice at the recovery phase to explore different miRNAs expressed, their relations with microbial abundance, and their effects on colitis. We found that miR-142a-3p expression was significantly increased in the feces of mice recovered from colitis and that it could alleviate disease symptoms in mice treated with DSS in a microbiome-dependent manner. Specifically, miR-142a-3p promoted the growth of Lactobacillus reuteri, which had a high abundance in the feces of mice recovered from colitis, by regulating transcripts of polA and locus tag LREU_RS03575. Moreover, L. reuteri, as well as its metabolite reuterin, could alleviate DSS-induced disease symptoms. These results highlight the role of fecal miR-142a-3p in the prevention of colitis. We propose that the feces of subjects who have recovered from diseases might be enriched with miRNAs with preventive effects against those diseases.

Latent fingerprint recognition technique has received increasing attention because it helps to precisely identify human information for many applications. In this study, bifunctional core-shell magnetic fluorescent microspheres have been synthesized via a facile interface Pechini-type sol-gel method using citric acid and polyethylene glycol as chelating agent and cross-linking agent, respectively. The obtained Fe3O4@YVO4:Eu3+ microspheres possess a typical core-shell structure, large magnetization, and strong fluorescence emission. The surface morphology and roughness of the microspheres can be flexibly tuned by controlling the multistep interface deposition process and subsequent calcination temperatures. Due to their well-integrated bifunctionalities, these magnetic fluorescent microspheres show outstanding performance in the visualization of latent fingerprints on various substrates with high definition and excellent anti-interference, and therefore they have great potential for application in identity recognition.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors γ (PPARγ) is a master regulator that controls energy metabolism and cell fate. PPARγ2, a PPARγ isoform, is highly expressed in the normal prostate but expressed at lower levels in prostate cancer tissues. In the present study, PC3 and LNCaP cells were used to examine the benefits of restoring PPARγ2 activity. PPARγ2 was overexpressed in PC3 and LNCaP cells, and cell proliferation and migration were detected. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining was used to detect pathological changes. The genes regulated by PPARγ2 overexpression were detected by microarray analysis. The restoration of PPARγ2 in PC3 and LNCaP cells inhibited cell proliferation and migration. PC3-PPARγ2 tissue recombinants showed necrosis in cancerous regions and leukocyte infiltration in the surrounding stroma by H&E staining. We found higher mixed lineage kinase domain-like (MLKL) and lower microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3) expression in cancer tissues compared to controls by immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining. Microarray analysis showed that PPARγ2 gain of function in PC3 cells resulted in the reprogramming of lipid- and energy metabolism-associated signaling pathways. These data indicate that PPARγ2 exerts a crucial tumor-suppressive effect by triggering necrosis and an inflammatory reaction in human prostate cancer.

In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis were conducted to characterise the co-pyrolysis of low-rank coal (SJC) and direct coal liquefaction residue (DCLR) as well as the evolution of the main functional groups of the pyrolysis products. This research is expected to further elucidate the reaction mechanism of co-pyrolysis. It was found that the co-pyrolysis of SJC and DCLR has synergistic effects and increases the hydrogen supply during co-pyrolysis. The chain breakage and thermal decomposition of functional groups during co-pyrolysis lead to the formation of solid, liquid, and gaseous products. The presence of DCLR promotes deep pyrolysis to produce numerous aromatic and aliphatic groups; many of these free-radical fragments rearrange and condense with hydrogen free radicals ([H]) to produce tar with a high molecular weight. When the [H] content is low, the free-radical fragments combine with each other to form solid coke. During co-pyrolysis, SJC and DCLR serve as both, hydrogen transmitters and donors. The catalysed hydrocraking of aromatic hydrocarbons and phenols in the tar product in the presence of hydrogen increases the content of the light component in the tar and produces alkanes, decreasing the aromatics and phenol contents.

Ovarian cancer (OC) is one of the most common malignancies of the female reproductive system. The miRNA miR-582-3p is associated with a variety of tumors, and the aim of this study was to investigate the role and mechanisms of miR-582-3p specifically in ovarian carcinogenesis and progression. Low expression of miR-582-3p was noted in OC tissue and cell lines, and lower expression of miR-582-3p correlated with lower overall survival in OC patients. Knockdown of miR-582-3p promoted the proliferation and migration of OC cells, while overexpression inhibited them. TUG1, a long non-coding RNA, was found to bind to miR-582-3p, and inhibition of lncRNA TUG1 decreased viability and migration and weakened the effect of miR-582-3p knockdown in OC cells. Implantation of OC cells with reduced miR-582-3p caused increased tumor growth, while lncRNA TUG1 knockdown suppressed tumor growth and relieved the impact of reduced miR-582-3p in vivo. Phosphorylation of AKT and mTOR were significantly enhanced with decreased miR-582-3p expression, but lncRNA TUG1 knockdown attenuated this trend in vitro and in vivo. The novel miR-582-3p represses the malignant properties of OC via the AKT/mTOR signaling pathway by targeting lncRNA TUG1. This axis may represent valuable prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for OC.

A novel aluminium foam-filled circular-triangular nested tube (AFCTNT) energy absorber was developed in this study, and its energy absorption behaviour under impact loading was experimentally and numerically studied. Drop-weight impact tests on the AFCTNT energy absorbers with different volumes of aluminium foam filler were first conducted to obtain their energy absorption parameters, force–displacement responses, and deformation modes. In addition, numerical studies on AFCTNT energy absorbers were also carried out, and the specific energy absorption of nested tubes and aluminium foam were obtained to further reveal their energy absorption performances. Experimental results indicated that the deformation modes of AFCTNT energy absorbers were evidently affected by the volume of aluminium foam filler. Moreover, the energy absorption performances of AFCTNT energy absorbers were found to be significantly improved by filling aluminium foam in terms of higher energy absorption, specific energy absorption, mean crushing force, and crushing force efficiency. Both experimental and numerical results demonstrated that the AFCTNT energy absorber with fully-filled aluminium foam outperformed the other AFCTNT energy absorbers owing to more significant interaction effect between the nested tubes and aluminium foam.

The endophytic fungus Periconia sp. TJ403-rc01 (Dematiaceae) isolated from the leaves of Rosa chinensis Jacq. (Rosaceae) was cultivated on rice medium and chemically investigated, affording two new lanostane-type triterpenoids, namely pericinones A and B (1 and 2). Their structures were determined mainly by 1 D and 2 D NMR and HRESIMS data. Notably, it is the first report of lanostane-type triterpenoids from species of Periconia. Compounds 1 and 2 showed moderate anti-inflammatory activity against the NO production with IC50 values of 24.12 ± 0.73 and 11.38 ± 1.56 μM, respectively.

Rational design and precise regulation over the morphology, structure, and pore size of functional conducting mesoporous polymers with enriched active sites and shorten electron–ion transport pathway are extremely important for developing high-performance micro-supercapacitors (MSCs), but still remain a great challenge. Herein, a general dual-colloid interface co-assembly strategy is proposed to fabricate hollow mesoporous polypyrrole nano-bowls (mPPy-nbs) for high-energy-density solid-state planar MSCs. By simply adjusting the size of block copolymer micelles, the diameter of polystyrene nanospheres and the amount of pyrrole monomer, mesopore size of the shell, void and shell thickness of mPPy-nbs can be simultaneously controlled. Importantly, this strategy can be further utilized to synthesize other hollow mesoporous polymers, including poly(tris(4-aminophenyl)amine), poly(1,3,5-triaminobenzene) and their copolymers, demonstrative of excellent universality. The structurally optimized mPPy-nb exhibits high specific surface area of 122 m2 g−1and large capacitance of 225 F g−1 at 1 mV s−1. Furthermore, the MSCs assembled by mPPy-nbs deliver impressive volumetric capacitance of 90 F cm−3 and energy density of 2.0 mWh cm−3, superior to the most reported polymers-based MSCs. Also, the fabricated MSCs present excellent flexibility with almost no capacitance decay under varying bending states, and robust serial/parallel self-integration for boosting voltage and capacitance output. Therefore, this work will inspire the new design of mesoporous conducting polymer materials toward high-performance microscale supercapacitive devices.

In this work, the discharge properties and electrochemical behaviors of as-cast AZ80-La-Gd anode for Mg-air battery have been investigated and compared with the AZ80 anode. The microstructure evolution, electrochemical behaviors and surface morphologies after discharge have been discussed to connect the discharge properties. The results indicate that the modified AZ80-La-Gd is an outstanding candidate for anode for Mg-air batter, which has high cell voltage, stable discharge curves, good specific capacity and energy, and good anodic efficiency. It exhibits the best anodic efficiency, specific capacity and energy of 76.45%, 1703.6 mAh•g−1 and 2186.3 mWh•g−1, respectively, which are 20.24%, 18.92% and 25.71% higher than values for AZ80 anode. Such excellent discharge performance is attributed to the Al-RE particles. They refine the Mg17Al12 phase and therefore improve the self-corrosion resistance and desorption ability of AZ80 anode.

Algae play an important role in ecological processes of aquatic ecosystems. Understanding the interactive effects of algae with invertebrates in litter decomposition is important for predicting the effects of global change on aquatic ecosystems. We manipulated Typha angustifolia litter to control exposure to shrimp fecal pellets and/or grazing, and the green alga Chlorella vulgaris were added to test their interactive effects on T. angustifolia litter decomposition. Our results showed that algae largely shortened microbial conditioning time and improved litter palatability (increasing litter quality), resulting in greater decomposition and higher fecal pellet production. Fecal pellets enhanced grazing effects on decomposition by increasing litter ash content. The effects of algae and especially fecal pellets on decomposition were dependent on or mediated by grazing. Without grazing, algae slightly promoted decomposition and marginally offset the negative effect of fecal pellets on litter decomposition. Shrimp grazing dramatically decreased microbial activity (extracellular enzyme activity and microbial respiration) at microbial conditioning stage while enhanced microbial activity after 84 days especially with both algae and fecal pellets present. Algae significantly upregulated N- and P-acquiring and slightly downregulated C-acquiring enzyme activity. Fecal pellets significantly depressed recalcitrant C-decomposition enzyme activity. Nevertheless, the three factors synergistically and significantly increased C loss and most enzyme activities, microbial respiration, and N immobilization, resulting in the decrease of litter C:N. Our results reveal the synergistic action of different trophic levels (autotrophs, heterotrophs, and primary consumers) in the complicated nutrient pathways of litter decomposition and provide support for predicting the effects of global changes (e.g., N deposition and CO2 enrichment), which have dramatically effects on alga dynamics and on ecological processes in aquatic ecosystems.

Extensive studies have reported that interaction of α-synuclein amyloid species with neurons is a crucial mechanistic characteristic of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and small molecules can downregulate the neurotoxic effects induced by protein aggregation. However, the exact mechanism(s) of these neuroprotective effects by small molecules remain widely unknown. In the present study, α-synuclein samples in the amyloidogenic condition were aged for 120 h with or without different concentrations of mitoquinone (MitoQ) as a quinone derivative compound and the amyloid characteristics and the relevant neurotoxicity were evaluated by Thioflavin T (ThT)/Nile red fluorescence, Congo red absorption, circular dichroism (CD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), cell viability, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), reactive oxygen species (ROS), reactive nitrogen species (RNS), malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and caspase-9/-3 activity assays. Results clearly showed the capacity of MitoQ on the inhibition of the formation of α-synuclein fibrillation products through modulation of the aggregation pathway by an effect on the kinetic parameters. Also, it was shown that α-synuclein samples aged for 120 h with MitoQ trigger less neurotoxic effects against SH-SY5Y cells than α-synuclein amyloid alone. Indeed, co-incubation of α-synuclein with MitoQ reduced the membrane leakage, oxidative and nitro-oxidative stress, modifications of macromolecules, and apoptosis.

Lithium-sulfur batteries possess the merits of low cost and high theoretical energy density but suffer from the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides and slow redox kinetics of sulfur. Herein, novel Co0.85Se nanoparticles embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheet arrays (Co0.85Se/NC) were constructed on carbon cloth as the self-supported host for a sulfur cathode using a facile fabrication strategy. The interconnected porous carbon-based structure of the Co0.85Se/NC could facilitate the rapid electron and ion transfer kinetics. The embedded Co0.85Se nanoparticles can effectively capture and catalyze lithium polysulfides, thus accelerating the redox kinetics and stabilizing sulfur cathodes. Therefore, the Co0.85Se/NC-S cathode could maintain a stable cycle performance for 400 cycles at 1C and deliver a high discharge specific capacity of 1361, 1001, and 810 mAh g-1 at current densities of 0.1, 1, and 3C, respectively. This work provides an efficient design strategy for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries with high energy densities.

Recent advances in high-precision potassium (K) isotopic analysis have found considerable isotopic variation in rock samples of the Earth’s continental and oceanic crusts; however, it is still uncertain whether there is any resolvable inter-mineral and mineral-melt K isotopic fractionation during igneous and metamorphic processes. Here, we report K isotope compositions of mineral separates from three extremely well preserved igneous rocks (intrusive/extrusive and mafic/intermediate/felsic) in order to investigate possible inter-mineral and mineral-melt K isotopic fractionation at magmatic temperatures. For the first time, we found large inter-mineral fractionation of K isotopes in natural samples (up to 1.072‰), where plagioclase displays a significant enrichment of heavier K isotopes compared to potassium feldspar and biotite in a granite. In addition, we also observed smaller but measurable K isotope fractionation (0.280‰±0.030‰) between ternary feldspar phenocrysts and matrix in a trachyandesite, as well as a comparable isotope fractionation (0.331‰±0.010‰) between plagioclase and the bulk in a gabbroic intrusive rock. We also evaluated such results by comparing the theoretically calculated equilibrium K isotope fractionation factors between relevant igneous minerals in literature and this study. In general, the measured inter-mineral fractionations are consistent with the theoretical calculations (i.e., plagioclase is enriched in heavier isotopes compared to potassium feldspar). Specifically, the measured K isotope fractionation between phenocryst rim and matrix in the trachyandesite agrees well with the calculated equilibrium isotope fractionation. However, the measured K isotope fractionations between phenocryst core and matrix as well as between plagioclase and K-feldspar are significantly larger (by a factor of ~2-3) than the calculated isotope fractionations, which suggest isotopic disequilibrium due to kinetic processes. Using a range of plagioclase-melt isotope fractionation factors inferred from the theoretical calculations in this study, we modeled the K isotopic fractionation during the formation of lunar anorthositic crust, and the result shows a negligible effect on the K isotopic compositions in both lunar crust and mantle. The K isotopic difference between Earth and Moon, therefore, cannot be the result of Lunar Magma Ocean differentiation. Finally, we evaluate the effect of observed inter-mineral fractionations on K-Ar and (40)Ar-(39)Ar dating. This study indicates the variation of (40)K/K ratio would contribute a maximum 0.08% error to the K-Ar and (40)Ar-(39)Ar age uncertainties. We propose a refined (40)K/total K ratio as 0.00011664±0.00000011 (116.64±0.11ppm) instead of the conventional value, 0.0001167(2) for the present Earth. Because some minerals fractionate K isotopes, ultrahigh precision age dating with the K-Ca-Ar dating systems must measure the K isotope fractionation in the same mineral fractions used for age dating.

Mesoporous ceria nanoparticles (MCNs) have many superiorities such as higher surface area and more active reaction sites over their solid counterparts. However, the correlation between their structure and catalytic activity is poorly understood due to the lack of methods to synthesize MCNs with variable and well-defined structure parameters. In this study, a MCNs synthesis platform featured with strong structure parameter tuning capacity was established to synthesize plenty of MCNs for exploring their structure-catalytic activity relationship. The platform was composed of Ce(NO3)3·6H2O precursor, trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) ligand, and ethanol and octadecene (ODE) solvent. Through altering ligand/precursor ratio, ligand-precursor addition manner and reaction temperature, three groups of MCNs, totally twelve nanoparticles, were synthesized on the platform. The structure parameters of the synthesized MCNs were collected, and their catalytic activities including oxygen storage capacity (OSC), oxidase mimetic activity and photocatalytic activity were evaluated. The MCNs demonstrated wide range of nanoparticle diameter (40–115 nm), pore diameter (2.09–4.17 nm), pore volume (0.20–0.40 cm3 g−1), surface area (119.2–202.8 m2 g−1), and crystallite size (8.8–9.95 nm). These parameters played different roles in controlling different catalytic reactions, where pore size and crystallite size determined the oxygen storage capacity (OSC), pore size regulated the enzyme mimetic activity, and surface area dominated the photocatalytic activity. This study provided important insights into the correlation between structure and catalytic activity of MCNs, which was critical to the fabrication of MCNs based catalytic reactions.

However, the key roles of FTO in pan-cancer are still largely obscure.Methods: FTO expression levels in pan-cancer were estimated via the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx), Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia (CCLE), and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) databases. Univariate survival analysis was used to estimate the effects of FTO on prognosis. In addition, we used the Tumor Immune Evaluation Resource (TIMER) to assess the immune cell infiltration of FTO gene across cancers. The association of FTO expression with immune checkpoint genes expression, DNA mismatch repair (MMR) gene mutation, DNA methyltransferases, microsatellite instability (MSI), and tumor mutational burden (TMB) was investigated using Spearman’s correlation analysis. Moreover, Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) was utilized to identify critical pathways in cancers. The STRING website was used to reveal the protein–protein interaction (PPI) network of FTO.Results: FTO was aberrantly expressed across cancers and survival analysis demonstrated that its expression was associated with clinical prognosis of many cancer patients. Specifically, FTO expression was significantly associated with immune infiltrating cells in colon adenocarcinoma, kidney renal clear cell carcinoma, and liver hepatocellular carcinoma. In addition, FTO expression was significantly associated with immune checkpoint genes expression, MMR, DNA methyltransferases levels, TMB, and MSI in multiple cancers. Moreover, the GSEA unveiled that FTO was involved in the regulation of tumors and immune-related signaling pathways. In addition, several m6A related genes were implicated in the PPI network of FTO.Conclusion: FTO was related to patients’ prognosis and tumor immune infiltrates in various cancers, and may serve as a novel and potential prognostic and immune biomarker in human pan-cancer.Keywords: FTO, biomarker, prognosis, tumor immune, pan-cancer

Mesoporous materials have been extensively studied for various applications due to their high specific surface areas and well-interconnected uniform nanopores. Great attention has been paid to synthesizing stable functional mesoporous metal oxides for catalysis, energy storage and conversion, chemical sensing, and so forth. Heteroatom doping and surface modification of metal oxides are typical routes to improve their performance. However, it still remains challenging to directly and conveniently synthesize mesoporous metal oxides with both a specific functionalized surface and heteroatom-doped framework. Here, we report a one-step multicomponent coassembly to synthesize Pt nanoparticle-decorated Si-doped WO3 nanowires interwoven into 3D mesoporous superstructures (Pt/Si-WO3 NWIMSs) by using amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polystyrene (PEO-b-PS), Keggin polyoxometalates (H4SiW12O40) and hydrophobic (1,5-cyclooctadiene)dimethylplatinum(II) as the as structure-directing agent, tungsten precursor and platinum source, respectively. The Pt/Si-WO3 NWIMSs exhibit a unique mesoporous structure consisting of 3D interwoven Si-doped WO3 nanowires with surfaces homogeneously decorated by Pt nanoparticles. Because of the highly porous structure, excellent transport of carriers in nanowires, and rich WO3/Pt active interfaces, the semiconductor gas sensors based on Pt/Si-WO3 NWIMSs show excellent sensing properties toward ethanol at low temperature (100 °C) with high sensitivity (S = 93 vs 50 ppm), low detection limit (0.5 ppm), fast response–recovery speed (17–7 s), excellent selectivity, and long-term stability., A multicomponent coassembly strategy was employed to construct metal oxide nanowires interwoven into 3D mesoporous superstructures decorated with platinum nanoparticles for low-temperature ethanol sensing.

Safety and high energy density have long restricted the large-scale practical application of lithium metal batteries because of the unbridled growth of lithium dendrites and the rapid deteriorating cycle performance of the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) cathode. Herein, an additive of RbNO3 with multiple functions is proposed for dendrite-free NCM811 lithium metal batteries. Benefiting from the electrostatic shielding effect formed by Rb+ during the Li+ deposition process and the solvation effect of NO3- to regulate lithium deposition, a high Coulombic efficiency of 95.02% (compared with the low Coulombic efficiency of 89.37% in the blank electrolyte) is acquired in Li//Cu cells, and the uniform growth of the lithium metal deposition with a large strawberry-like morphology is achieved. Moreover, when a cathode of NCM811 matches with a lithium metal anode, an extraordinary capacity retention of 93.67% after 200 cycles with a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.7% in the electrolyte with the RbNO3 system (a capacity retention of 80.1% with a Coulombic efficiency of 98.0% for the blank electrolyte) is achieved at 1C. This work provides guidance for the development of high-efficiency additives with dual synergistic regulation effects of anions and cations for lithium metal batteries in the future.

Intramuscular fat (IMF) is an important factor affecting meat quality, but lipid and metabolic profiles of donkey meat remain unclear. The present study was conducted to investigate lipid characteristics in different parts of Dezhou donkey using lipidomics. The results show that IMF was more abundant in longissimus dorsi muscle (LDM) than rump muscle (RM) and hamstring muscle (HM), and mainly composed of triglycerides (TGs) rich in saturated fatty acid (SFAs) and monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFAs). Vulgarisins are members of diterpenoids with rare 5/6/4/5 ring skeleton from Prunella vulgaris Linn. (P. vulgaris). Their molecular scaffolds comprise different hydroxylation and degree of esterification. Vulgarisins have attracted many attentions in the fields of food and medicine for their potent bioactivities. Firstly, four reference compounds were analyzed by higher-energy collisional dissociation mass spectrometry (HCD MS/MS) and the fragmentation patterns for molecular scaffold were summarized. And then, a high-performance liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization/high-resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-HR-MS) method was adopted to investigate the P. vulgaris extracts. Finally, the proposed analysis results were successfully applied to facilitate the discovery of the vulgarisins analogues from P. vulgaris. For the four reference compounds, the sodium adduct was the predominate ion in full scan. A specific fragmentation pathway of [M+Na]+ ions leads to produce diagnostic ions of vulgarisins at m/z 325 under HCD, which was formed through consecutive-side chains lost. Twenty-three diterpenoids, including 18 vulgarisins analogues, were identified or tentatively characterized in the botanical extracts of P. vulgaris based on their elemental constituents and characteristic fragment ion profiles. Two new vulgarisins analogues in the plant were isolated and their structures were illustrated based on extensive spectroscopic analysis using 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The HCD MS/MS method, including the profiles of the diagnostic ions induced by characteristic fragmentation, is an effective technique for the discovery of vulgarisins analogues in P. vulgaris. The expected fragmentation pattern knowledge will also facilitate the analysis of other natural products.

Tumor drug resistance and systemic side effects of chemotherapeutic drugs are the main reasons for the failure of cancer treatment. In recent years, it was found that some natural active ingredients can reverse MDR and regulate body immunity to enhance the efficacy and reduce toxicity of chemotherapeutic drugs. In this paper, a new nanosuspensions, HCPT and QUR hybrid nanosuspensions (HQ-NPs), was prepared by the microprecipitation-high pressure homogenization method to reverse tumor drug resistance, reduce toxicity, and increase therapeutic efficacy. The in vitro investigation results showed that HQ-NPs had a unique shape (particle size was about 216.3 ± 5.9 nm), changed crystalline, and different dissolution rates compared with HCPT-NPs and QUR-NPs, which is attributed to the strong intermolecular forces between HCPT and QUR as indicated by the results of the molecule dock. It was verified that the HQ-NPs could double the retention of HCPT in cells and enhance the cytotoxicity to A549/PTX cells in vitro tests compared with HCPT-NPs. The characterization of ferroelectricity in ultra-thin ferroelectric (FE) films is highly challenging due to enlarged leakage current and resistive switching (RS) effect. In this study, we investigated the polarization switching properties of 1.5-nm thick Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (HZO) films via direct hysteresis remnant polarization/voltage (P–V) loop measurement. To reduce the leakage current and eliminate the RS effect, positive-up–negative-down (PUND) measurement was implemented on back-to-back connected complementary cells. Rational hysteresis loops, with remnant polarization of approximately $2~\mu \text{C}$ /cm2, were successfully obtained by directly measuring the polarization switching currents. In this study, we provide direct evidence of the stable ferroelectric property in 1.5-nm thick HZO films, and thereby show a potential prospect of ultimate scalability of HZO films.

The influence of aromatic antioxidants 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT) and diphenylamine (DPA) on the thermal-oxidative degradation of base oils 150N was studied by using the hot oil oxidation test (HOOT) with temperatures varying from 100 to 200°C and times ranging from 1–24 h. Qualitative as well as quantitative analyses of the base oils and their fractions were done using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and spectroscopic (FTIR, UV–visible) techniques to gain a better understanding of their compositional and structural details. Oxidization processes were also studied and structural changes resulting from thermal oxidation were identified. The results indicate that the addition of antioxidants causes an obvious enhancement in the resistance of base oils to thermal-oxidative degradation. Moreover, the mixture of antioxidants shows better thermal-oxidative resistance than the phenolic or diphenylamine antioxidants alone.

Ten new meroterpenoids, bipolaquinones A-J (1-10), and one known congener, isocochlioquinone F (11), were isolated and identified from the fermented rice cultures of a soil-derived fungus, Bipolaris zeicola. The planar structures of 1-10 were elucidated based on extensive spectroscopic analyses (including HRESIMS and 1D and 2D NMR data), and their absolute configurations were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, comparison of experimental electronic circular dichroism (ECD) data, ECD calculations, and hydrolysis reaction. The immunosuppressive activity assay revealed that compounds 2, 3, and 7-10 showed significant inhibitory activity against concanavalin A (ConA)-induced T lymphocyte proliferation with IC50 values ranging from 4.1 to 9.4 μM, which furnished potential lead molecules for the design and development of new immunosuppressants for treating autoimmune-associated diseases.

Prunella vulgaris is a widely used edible Chinese medicinal plant. In the present study, two new abietane-type diterpenoids, abietoquinones A (1) and B (2), were isolated from this plant by an immunosuppressive bioassay-guided isolation procedure. Their structures were elucidated unambiguously by NMR spectroscopic analysis, single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and electronic circular dichroism calculations. Compounds 1 and 2 bear a cyclohex-2-ene-1,4-dione moiety, which is uncommon among abietane diterpenes. Also, abietoquinone A (1) suppressed murine splenocyte proliferation and decreased the production of proinflammatory cytokines induced by concanavalin A (Con A) in vitro. In Con A-challenged mice, preinjection with 1 significantly ameliorated liver injury. Additionally, abietoquinone A (1) exhibited inhibitory activities against the proliferation of murine splenocytes and human T cells induced by anti-CD3/anti-CD28 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs).

Background N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification is one of the most common chemical modifications of eukaryotic mRNAs, which play an important role in tumors and cardiovascular disease through regulating mRNA stability, splicing and translation. However, the changes of m6A mRNA and m6A-related enzymes in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) remain largely unexplored. Methods MeRIP-seq was used to identify m6A methylation in lung tissues from control and MCT-PAH rats. Western blot and immunofluorescence were used to evaluate expression of m6A-related enzymes. Results Compared with control group, m6A methylation was mainly increased in lung tissues from MCT-PAH rats. The up-methylated coding genes in MCT-PAH rats were primarily enriched in processes associated with inflammation, glycolysis, ECM-receptor interaction and PDGF signal pathway, while genes with down-methylation were enriched in processes associated with TGF-β family receptor members. The expression of FTO and ALKBH5 downregulated, METTL3 and YTHDF1 increased and other methylation modification-related proteins was not significantly changed in MCT-PAH rats lung tissues. Immunofluorescence indicated that expression of FTO decreased and YTHDF1 increased in small pulmonary arteries of MCT-PAH rats. Conclusion m6A levels and the expression of methylation-related enzymes were altered in PAH rats, in which FTO and YTHDF1 may play a crucial role in m6A modification.

Two dimensional (2D) tin disulfide (SnS2) has attracted growing interest as a promising high performance photodetector with superior performance such as fast response time, high responsivity, and good stability. However, SnS2-based photodetectors still face great challenges, and the photodetection performance needs to be improved for practical applications. Herein, indium-doped SnS2 (In-SnS2) few layers were exfoliated from CVT-grown single crystals, which were synthesized by chemical vapor transport. Photodetectors based on In-SnS2 few layers were fabricated and detected. Compared with photodetectors based on pristine SnS2, photodetectors based on In-SnS2 few layers exhibited better photodetection performances, including higher responsivities, higher external quantum efficiencies, and greater normalized detectivities. The responsivity (R), external quantum efficiency (EQE), and normalized detectivity (D*) were increased by up to 2 orders of magnitude after In doping. Considering responsivity and response time, the photodetector based on 1.4 at. % In-SnS2 few layers exhibited an optimal photodetection performance with a high R of 153.8 A/W, a high EQE of 4.72 × 104 %, a great D* of 5.81 × 1012 Jones, and a short response time of 13 ms. Our work provides an efficient path to enhance photodetection performances of photodetectors based on SnS2 for future high-performance optoelectronic applications.

A new pair of enantiomeric isoprenylated chromone derivatives, (±)-pestaloficiol X [(±)-1], along with a known compound pestaloficiol J (2), were isolated from the plant endophytic fungus Pestalotiopsis sp. The racemic mixture 1 was separated through chiral HPLC. The structures of new compounds (±)-1 were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic data and their absolute configurations were further configured through computational analysis of their electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. Compound (+)-1 showed significant inhibitory potency against HL-60 and HEP-3B cell lines, with IC50 values of 1.35 ± 0.15 and 3.70 ± 0.33 μM, respectively, while compound (-)-1 showed significant inhibitory potency against HL-60 and HEP-3B cell lines, with IC50 values of 2.39 ± 0.26 and 2.99 ± 0.35 μM, respectively.

Perovskite light-emitting devices (PeLEDs) have drawn a great deal of attention because of their exceptional optical and electrical properties. However, as for the blue PeLEDs based on low-dimensional (LD) CsPbBr3, the low conductivity of the widely used organic spacers as well as the difficulty of forming pure and uniform LD CsPbBr3 phase have severely inhibited the device performance such as stability and efficiency. In this work, we report an effective strategy to obtain high-quality LD CsPbBr3 by using a novel spacer of inorganic Cs4PbBr6 instead of the common long-chain ammonium halides. We found that a 3-amino-1-propanol (3AP)-modified PEDOT:PSS was helpful to stimulate the formation of the LD blue emissive CsPbBr3:Cs4PbBr6 composite. We also revealed that an additive of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) in the precursor can limit further growth of LD perovskite phase into 3D perovskite phase upon annealing, thus resulting in a uniformly distributed LD perovskite with high color stability. Consequently, efficient blue PeLEDs @ 485 nm with a brightness of 2192 cd/m2, current efficiency of 2.68 cd/A, and external quantum efficiency of 2.3% was successfully achieved. More importantly, the device showed much improved working stability compared to those with the spacer of organic ammonium halides. Our results provide some helpful insights into developing efficient and stable blue PeLEDs.

To improve the reliability, especially the toughness, of the reaction bonded silicon carbide (RBSC) ceramics, silicon carbide whiskers coated with pyrolytic carbon layer (PyC-SiCw) by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) were introduced into the RBSC ceramics to fabricate the SiCw/RBSC composites in this study. The microstructures and properties of the PyC-SiCw/RBSC composites under different mass fraction of nano carbon black and PyC-SiCw were investigated methodically. As a result, a bending strength of 550 MPa was achieved for the composites with 25 wt% nano carbon black, and the residual silicon decreased to 11.01 vol% from 26.58 vol% compared with the composite of 15 vol% nano carbon black. The fracture toughness of the composites reinforced with 10 wt% PyC-SiCw, reached a high value of 5.28 MPa m1/2, which increased by 39% compared to the RBSC composites with 10 wt% SiCw. The residual Si in the composites deceased below to 7 vol%, resulting from the combined actively reaction of nano carbon black and PyC with more Si. SEM and TEM results illustrated that the SiCw were protected by PyC coating. A thin SiC layer formed of outer surface of whiskers can provide a suitable whisker-matrix interface, which is in favor of crack deflection, SiCw bridging and pullout to improve the bending strength and toughness of the SiCw/RBSC composites.

Injectable hydrogels have been considered as promising materials for bone regeneration, but their osteoinduction and mechanical performance are yet to be improved. In this study, a novel biocompatible injectable and self-healing nano hybrid hydrogel was on-demand prepared via a fast (within 30 s) and easy gelation approach by reversible Schiff base formed between −CH=O of oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) and −NH2 of glycol chitosan (GCS) mixed with calcium phosphate nanoparticles (CaP NPs). Its raw materials can be ready in large quantities by a simple synthesis process. The mechanical strength, degradation and swelling behavior of the hydrogel can be readily controlled by simply controlling the molar ratio of −CH=O and −NH2. This hydrogel exhibits pH responsiveness, good degradability and biocompatibility. The hydrogel used as the matrix for mesenchymal stem cells can significantly induce the proliferation, differentiation and osteoinduction in vitro. These results showed this novel hydrogel is an ideal candidate for applications in bone tissue regeneration and drug delivery.

Refractory metal niobium (Nb) incorporated with a small amount of silver (Ag), the resulting Nb-Ag two-phase alloys, were fabricated by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering. The microstructure, mechanical properties, wear resistance, corrosion behavior, in vitro and in vivo antibacterial properties and biocompatibility of the Nb-Ag alloys were systematically investigated. The results show that the mechanical properties, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and antibacterial ability were significantly enhanced after addition of 5 at.% Ag. The fabricated Nb-5 at.% Ag alloy demonstrates high yield strength of up to ∼ 1486 MPa and fracture strain of ∼ 35 %. The precipitated Ag particles could reduce friction and wear. The enhanced corrosion resistance was attributed to the higher relative density of the sintered alloys and the formation of a stable and dense passive film of niobium and silver oxides. In vitro and in vivo evaluations show that the Nb-5 at.% Ag alloy also has strong antibacterial activity and good biocompatibility and osteointegration ability. These results demonstrate great potential of the nanostructured Nb-Ag alloys for dental and orthopedic implants.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) as a commonly used semiconductor material has aroused extensive research attention in various fields, such as field-effect transistors, solar cells, luminescent devices, and sensors, because of its excellent light-electrical features and large exciton bonding energy. Herein, ultrasmall Au nanoparticles with tunable size decorated mesoporous ZnO nanospheres were synthesized via facile formaldehyde-assisted metal-ligand cross-linking strategy, where these active Au species could be transferred into Au nanoparticles in the frameworks by various reduction strategies. Typically, mesoporous ZnO-Au with a photoreduction technique showed superior ethanol sensing performance (ca. 159 for 50 ppm at 200 °C) because of its high surface area, dual-mesoporous structure, and interface effect (electron effect, surface catalytic/adsorption). Moreover, the mesoporous ZnO-Au composites by photoreduction show much better performance than those via H2 reduction and NaBH4 reduction, which is ascribed to the providential size of Au nanoparticles (ca. 6.6 nm) and abundant oxygen defects in the composites. In particular, the selectivity and sensitivity of mesoporous ZnO-Au far exceeds those of materials loaded with other noble metals (Pt, Pd, and Ag). The sensing mechanism of mesoporous ZnO-Au for ethanol is attributed to classical surface adsorption/catalytic reaction, where strong sensitization effect (electron and chemical) and the spillover effect of Au nanoparticles in the catalytic reaction cause superior ethanol sensing performances. In situ FTIR and GC-MS measurement revealed that the catalytic oxidation of ethanol follows the process of dehydrogenation and deep oxidation, that is, dehydrogenation to acetaldehyde, and then further oxidation to carbon dioxide and water.

Catalytic methane decomposition (CMD) receives increasing attention for co-production of COx-free hydrogen and valuable carbon by-product, and the catalyst plays a crucial role on methane conversion and the product features. Unsupported nickel catalysts derived from commercial nickel foam (NF) were prepared for CMD by mild pre-treatment. Effects of the pre-treatment method (acid treatment, thermal treatment, acid-thermal treatment and hydrogen reduction) and reaction temperature were explored on the NF morphology and CMD reactivity in a fixed-bed reactor. It is found that catalytic performance of the NF-based catalyst is highly dependent on the pre-treatment and reaction temperature. The thermal and acid-thermal treatments could greatly promote the catalytic activity (with methane conversion up to 74.6% and 91.8%, respectively) at 850 °C. To fully release potential abilities of the catalyst, the carbon deposited spent catalyst was recycled as a fresh catalyst in the CMD test by several strategies. High and stable methane conversion (up to around 90%–93%) can be achieved by simulating the operation model in a fluidized-bed reactor for a continuous CMD process. Besides, the carbon deposited spent catalyst could serve as a promising candidate of supercapacitor electrode material.

Two novel alkaloids compounds together with fifteen know metabolites were identified from Aspergillus ochraceus. The stereochemistry features of the new molecules were determined via HRESIMS, NMR, ECD, and XRD analyses. Amongst these, compounds two compounds exhibited potential efficacy as anti‐Parkinson's disease with the EC50 values of 2.30 and 2.45 μm, respectively. ADMET prediction showed that these compounds owned favorable drug‐like characteristics and safe toxicity scores towards CNS drugs. Virtual screening analyses manifested that the compounds exhibited not only robust and reliable interactions to adenosine receptors A2A, but also higher binding selectivity to A2A receptors than to A1 and A3 receptors. Molecular dynamics simulation demonstrated the reliability of molecular docking results and the stability of the complexes obtained with the novel compounds and A2A receptors in natural environments. It is the first time that anti‐PD lead compounds have been identified from Aspergillus ochraceus and targeting adenosine A2A receptors., Prenylated indole alkaloid 14 exhibited the potential efficacy towards MPP+ insult SH‐SY5Y cells with the EC50 values of 2.30 μm. Virtual screening data manifested that 14 exhibited higher binding selectivity to A2AR than to A1R and A3R. Molecular dynamics simulation demonstrated the reliability of molecular docking results and the stability of 14‐A2AR complex in natural environments.

Green and recyclable solid acid catalysts are in urgent demand as a substitute for conventional liquid mineral acids. In this work, a series of novel sulfonic acid-functionalized core-shell Fe3O4@carbon microspheres (Fe3O4@C-SO3H) have been designed and synthesized as an efficient and recyclable heterogeneous acid catalyst. For the synthesis, core-shell Fe3O4@RF (resorcinol-formaldehyde) microspheres with tunable shell thickness were achieved by interfacial polymerization on magnetic Fe3O4 microspheres. After high-temperature carbonization, the microspheres were eventually treated by surface sulfonation, resulting in Fe3O4@C-x-SO3H (x stands for carbonization temperature) microspheres with abundant surface SO3H groups. The obtained microspheres possess uniform core-shell structure, partially-graphitized carbon skeletons, superparamagnetic property, high magnetization saturation value of 10.6 emu/g, and rich SO3H groups. The surface acid amounts can be adjusted in the range of 0.59–1.04 mmol/g via sulfonation treatment of carbon shells with different graphitization degrees. The magnetic Fe3O4@C-x-SO3H microspheres were utilized as a solid acid catalyst for the acetalization reaction between benzaldehyde and ethylene glycol, demonstrating high selectivity (97%) to benzaldehyde ethylene glycol acetal. More importantly, by applying an external magnetic field, the catalysts can be easily separated from the heterogeneous reaction solutions, which later show well preserved catalytic activity even after 9 cycles, revealing good recyclability and high stability.

Alkali metals are important factors affecting the process of biomass pyrolysis. In this paper, rice straw (RS) with different occurrence forms of alkali metals was used as the research object. The heat decomposition characteristics, the release law of small molecule gases and the change law of in-situ pyrolysis tar composition were investigated by the thermal mass spectrometer (TG-MS) and thermal pyrolysis-GC/MS (Py-GC/MS) to reveal the action mechanism of different occurrence forms of alkali metals in the pyrolysis process. The results showed that with the increase of the removal degree of alkali metals from rice straw, the release temperature of small molecules during the pyrolysis shifted to the high temperature region, due to the catalytic effect of alkali metals on the escape of small molecules. The different occurrence forms of alkali metals had different influences on the tar components. Water-soluble alkali metals inhibited the production of alcohols and promoted the production of ketones and aldehydes. Ion-exchanged alkali metals had different effects on oil composition at different temperatures. At the pyrolysis of 300°C, the presence of ion-exchanged alkali metals inhibited the production of aldehydes and ethers, and promoted the production of esters and ketones, but opposite effect was obtained at the temperature higher than 400°C. Kinetic analysis showed that both water-soluble alkali metal ions and exchanged alkali metals could reduce the activation energy of biomass pyrolysis.

We have developed a MUC1 antigen-based antitumor vaccine loaded on alum colloid encapsulated inside β-glucan particles (GP-Al). The constructed vaccine induced strong MUC1 antigen specific IgG antibody titers and enhanced CD8+ T cells cytotoxic effect to kill tumor cells. These results indicated that GP-Al can be served as an efficient delivery system and adjuvant for the development of cancer vaccines especially small molecule antigens based cancer vaccines.
