BACKGROUND To investigate the role of adiponectin in nonalcoholic fatty liver cell model and its mechanism. METHODS The serum were collected from patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and healthy controls. Then the expression of APN in the serum was detected using APN kit. Furthermore, an in vitro model of NAFLD was established using mixed fatty acids treated HepG2 cells, and APN was highly expressed in the culture solution to a concentration of 10 μg/mL. The normal control group (Normal) was normal cells, the model group (NAFLD) was mixed fatty acids treated HepG2 cells, the experimental group (NAFLD+APN) was model cells transfected with high APN expression, and the negative control group (NAFLD+PBS) was model cells transfected with PBS. The expression of NOX2 in each group was detected by Western blot. The corresponding kit was used to detect the level of triglyceride (TG), the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), the content of malondialdehyde (MDA), and the ratio of GSH/GSSG in each group of cells. CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2RR), combined with solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs), is a feasible technology for the storage of renewable electric energy, while its development is limited by the catalytic activity and stability on cathodes. Here, a novel garnet oxide (Gd3Fe5O12) cathode is designed, where the garnet oxide is converted to perovskite oxide and iron via in situ electrochemical phase transition during CO2 electroreduction, resulting in high activity with Faradaic efficiency close to 100% and great stability over 1000 h galvanostatic test. A variety of experimental characterizations and density functional theory calculations indicate that in situ exsolved Fe clusters can effectively enhance the adsorption energies of intermediates and lowering the CO2 dissociation barriers. Microkinetic modelling confirms that CO2RR goes through a dissociative adsorption mechanism and the electronic transfer for CO2 dissociation is the rate-determining step.

High silicon oxygen/phenolic aldehyde (VSF/PR) ablative heat-proof material is widely used as resin-based heat-proof system for long-term aircraft. Understanding the generation and flow process of the surface droplets during high temperature is key to improving the thermal stability, and prior to which, a direct visualization of the surface evolution is required. Here we use optical imaging technique to in-situ and real time record the surface evolution of a flat plate subjected to thermal ablation at 1700 °C in wind tunnel. Based on the experimental results processed using image processing method and by combining the fluid theory in high temperature wind tunnel, we explained the distribution of the surface temperature and surface liquid droplets, the velocity field, and the movement of the liquid droplets on the plate surface. Results show that the distribution of the liquid droplets was correlated to the temperature distribution. A verification experiment for the merging process of two liquid droplets shows that droplet with high viscosity would generate a great friction force and cause the droplet to move forward in a rolling manner. The chasing and merging process of the liquid droplets with high viscosity is rather an entrainment process than a spontaneous merging process normally induced by surface tension. These findings help to understand the flow behavior of the liquid droplets during thermal ablation.

Potyviral coat protein (CP) is involved in the replication and movement of potyviruses. However, little information is available on the roles of CP-coding sequence in potyviral infection. Here, we introduced synonymous substitutions to the codon C574G575C576 coding conserved residue arginine at position 192 (R192) of tobacco vein banding mosaic virus (TVBMV) CP. Substitution of the codon C574G575C576 to A574G575A576 or A574G575G576, but not C574G575A576, C574G575T576, or C574G575G576, reduced the replication, cell-to-cell movement, and accumulation of TVBMV in Nicotiana benthamiana plants, suggesting that C574 was critical for replication of TVBMV. Nucleotides 531 to 576 of the TVBMV CP-coding sequence were predicted to form a stem-loop structure, in which four consecutive C-G base pairs (C576-G531, C532-G575, C574-G533, and C534-G573) were located at the stem. Synonymous substitutions of R178-codon C532G533C534 to A532G533A534 and A532G533G534, but not C532G533A534, C532G533T534, or C532G533G534, reduced the replication levels, cell-to-cell, and systemic movement of TVBMV, suggesting that C532 was critical for TVBMV replication. Synonymous substitutions disrupting base pairs C576-G531 and C534-G573 did not affect viral accumulation. After three serial-passage inoculations, the accumulation of spontaneous mutant viruses was restored, and codons A532G533A534, A532G533G534, A574G575A576, or A574G575G576 of mutants were each separately changed to C532G533A534, C532G533G534, C574G575A576, or C574G575G576. Synonymous mutation of R178 and R192 also reduced viral accumulation in N. tabacum plants. Therefore, we concluded that the two consecutive C532-G575 and C574-G533 base pairs played critical roles in TVBMV replication via maintaining the stability of the stem-loop structures formed by nucleotides 531 to 576 of the CP-coding sequence.

The electrosynthesis of valuable chemicals via carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) has provided a promising way to address global energy and sustainability problems. However, the selectivity and activity of deep-reduction products (DRPs) still remain as big challenges. Here, a copper–carbon-based catalyst with a hydrophobic core–shell architecture has been constructed and was found to exhibit excellent DRPs of methane generation with a faradaic efficiency of 81 ± 3% in a neutral medium and a maximum partial current density of −434 mA cm−2 in a flow cell configuration, which is among the best of CO2-to-CH4 electrocatalysts. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the hydrophobic structure decreasing the water coverage on the catalyst surface can promote the protonation of the *CO intermediate and block CO production, further favoring the generation of methane. These results provide a new insight into the electrosynthesis of DRPs via constructing a hydrophobic core–shell architecture for tuning the surface water coverage.

This review summarizes the recent advances in the development of electrocatalysts to facilitate the conversion of H2O, N2 and CO2 into essential global products, providing an in-depth understanding of the design of high-performance electrocatalysts.

Constructing robust adsorbents for SO2 removal remains a challenging issue. Herein, a U-Co bimetallic-organic framework, namely, ECUT-123, showing a helical 1D pore decorated by abundant -CH3 groups, enables ultrahigh stability under acid, base, and water. This merit further supports its big potential for the removal of trace SO2.

Macroalgae that inhabit intertidal zones are exposed to the air for several hours during low tide and must endure desiccation and high variations in temperature, light intensity, and salinity. Pyropia yezoensis (Rhodophyta, Bangiales), a typical intertidal red macroalga that is commercially cultivated in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, was investigated under different dehydration stresses of desiccation, high salinity, and high mannitol concentration. Using chlorophyll fluorescence imaging, photosynthetic activities of P. yezoensis thalli were analyzed using six parameters derived from quenching curves and rapid light curves. A distinct discrepancy was revealed in photosynthetic responses to different dehydration stresses. Dehydration caused by exposure to air resulted in rapid decreases in photosynthetic activities, which were always lower than two other stresses at the same water loss (WL) level. High salinity only reduced photosynthesis significantly at its maximum WL of 40% but maintained a relatively stable maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII) (Fv/Fm). High mannitol concentration induced maximum WL of 20% for a longer time (60 min) than the other two treatments and caused no adverse influences on the six parameters at different WL except for a significant decrease in non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) at 20% WL. Illustrated by chlorophyll fluorescence images, severe spatial heterogeneities were induced by desiccation with lower values in the upper parts than the middle or basal parts of the thalli. The NPQ and rETRmax (maximum relative electron transport rate) demonstrated clear distinctions for evaluating photosynthetic responses, indicating their sensitivity and applicability. The findings of this study indicated that the natural dehydration of exposure to air results in stronger and more heterogeneous effects than those of high salinity or high mannitol concentration.

Exploring earth-abundant electrocatalysts with excellent activity, robust stability, and multiple functions is crucial for electrolytic hydrogen generation. Porous phosphorized CoNi2 S4 yolk-shell spheres (P-CoNi2 S4 YSSs) were rationally designed and synthesized by a combined hydrothermal sulfidation and gas-phase phosphorization strategy. Benefiting from the strengthened Ni3+ /Ni2+ couple, enhanced electronic conductivity, and hollow structure, the P-CoNi2 S4 YSSs exhibit excellent activity and durability towards hydrogen/oxygen evolution and urea oxidation reactions in alkaline solution, affording low potentials of -0.135 V, 1.512 V, and 1.306 V (versus reversible hydrogen electrode) at 10 mA cm-2 , respectively. Remarkably, when used as the anode and cathode simultaneously, the P-CoNi2 S4 catalyst merely requires a cell voltage of 1.544 V in water splitting and 1.402 V in urea electrolysis to attain 10 mA cm-2 with excellent durability for 100 h, outperforming most of the reported nickel-based sulfides and even noble-metal-based electrocatalysts. This work promotes the application of sulfides in electrochemical hydrogen production and provides a feasible approach for urea-rich wastewater treatment.

Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (N2RR) in an aqueous solution suffers from unsatisfactory activity and selectivity for possible practical utilization. As the emerging catalyst for N2RR among various candidate non-metal catalysts, black phosphorus (BP) is promising but hasn’t been improved enough to solve those issues due to hugely exposed but inert surface P sites. In this work, a series of metals are chosen to adjust the coordination environment of inert surface P sites in bilayered BP (BPBL-M) by subsurface intercalation. The design principles of N2RR catalysts is investigated based on proton-coupled electron transfer theory by density functional theory (DFT). The BPBL-M with low-expanded interlayer-distances shows higher activity than bare BPBL and the first hydrogenation step for NNH* formation is potential determining step, where the activated N-N bond length correlates with N2RR activity. Meanwhile, the selectivity of N2RR on BPBL-M is regulated by intercalation as well. Considering the activity and selectivity altogether, the surface sites of BP yields higher activity and selectivity than the intrinsic BPBL after intercalation of Ni, Bi, Pd, and Ga. This model provides a new strategy from a theoretical perspective to activate the inert surface P sites to realize high intrinsic activity and high P site density for N2RR and broad new insight to design efficient 2D catalysts for N2RR.

Background In highly intensive dairy farms, cows often suffer from metabolic disorders that cause severe oxidative stress. Objectives This study aimed to observe correlations and associations of oxidative stress‐related indicators with milk compositions and metabolites. Methods Twenty‐two multiparous Holstein dairy cows in early lactation were randomly selected from a commercial dairy farm. The morning milk was collected for composition and metabolites analysis. Blood was sampled via the tail vein to analyze oxidative stress‐related indicators (reactive oxygen species, ROS; catalase, CAT; superoxide dismutase, SOD; glutathione peroxidase, GPX; malondialdehyde, MDA) and metabolites. Results Results showed that ROS were positively correlated with CAT, GPX, SOD, and MDA. However, the levels of CAT, GPX, and SOD were negatively related to milk fat (P, In highly intensive dairy farms, cows often suffer from metabolic disorders that cause severe oxidative stress. The correlations of oxidative stress‐related indicators with milk composition and metabolites (serum and milk) in multiparous Holstein dairy cows in early lactation were investigated in this study. Results indicated that ROS not only increased oxidative damage in dairy cows but also altered some metabolites involved in amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) has been identified as the key receptor of SARS coronavirus that plays a key role in the pathogenesis of SARS. It is known that ACE2 mRNA can be expressed in most organs. However, the protein expression of ACE2 is not clear yet. To explore the role of ACE2 as a precipitating factor in digestive organ damage in COVID-19, this study investigated the expression of ACE2 protein in the human liver, esophagus, stomach, and colon. The result showed that ACE2 can be expressed in the liver, esophagus, stomach, and colon, which suggests SARS-CoV-2 may enter the digestive system through ACE2 and cause liver damage and gastrointestinal damage. It is hoped that the result of the study will provide a new strategy for the prevention and treatment of digestive organ damage under COVID-19.

Spinel-structured lithium manganese oxide is regarded as one of the most promising materials that can recover Li+ from brine and seawater. Herein, a hierarchical porous and hydrophilic H1.6Mn1.6O4@chitosan pellet (HMO@CP) is proposed and its mechanical property is tailored through the glutaraldehyde-derived cross-linking. Different characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunner-Emmet-Teller (BET) measurement, Fourier transformation infrared spectrum (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) meter were used to investigate the chemical and morphological properties of the HMO@CP. H1.6Mn1.6O4 powders were successfully encapsulated by chitosan, forming composite porous pellets. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of HMO@CP is 49.2 mg·g−1, which is similar to that of the pristine H1.6Mn1.6O4. Moreover, the adsorption behavior of HMO@CP well fits with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the Langmuir model can be used to describe the adsorption isotherm of HMO@CP. Furthermore, the adsorption thermodynamic parameters such as ΔHθ ΔGθ and ΔSθ were calculated based on the obtained results. When the pellet is immersed into 0.05mol·L−1 HCl solution after the Li+ adsorption process, the desorption equilibrium can be reached within 60 min, with a manganese dissolution loss of 2.48%. The Li+ adsorption capacity of HMO@CP remains at 41.92 mg·g−1 after five adsorption-desorption cycles, confirming the effective regeneration property of the HMO@CP. In addition, the as-prepared HMO@CP shows excellent selectivity for Li+ among Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ ions in the simulated solution.

The electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 presents a promising strategy in addressing environmental and energy crisis. Significant progress has been achieved via CO2 gas diffusion electrolysis, to react at high selectivity and high rate. However, the gas diffusion layer (GDL) of the gas diffusion electrode (GDE) still suffers from low tolerance and limited active sites. Here, the hydrophobic 1-octadecanethiol molecular was functionalized over the Cu catalyst layer of the GDE, which simultaneously stabilizes the GDL and exposes abundant active solid-liquid-gas three-phase interfaces. The resultant GDE exhibits multi-carbon (C2+) product selectivity over faradaic efficiency (FE) of 70.0% in the range of 100 to 800 mA·cm−2, with the peak FEC2+ of 85.2% at 800 mA·cm−2. Notably, the strengthened GDE could continuously drive high-current electrolysis for more than 100 h without flooding. This work opens a new way to improve CO2 gas diffusion electrolysis via surface molecular engineering. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

Prussian blue analogs (PBAs) are considered as reliable and promising cathode materials for aqueous Zn‐ion batteries (AZIBs), but they suffer from low capacity and poor cycling stability due to insufficient active sites and structural damage caused by the ion insertion/extraction processes. Herein, a template‐engaged ion exchange approach has been developed for the synthesis of Co‐substituted Mn‐rich PBA hollow spheres (CoMn‐PBA HSs) as cathode materials for AZIBs. Benefiting from the multiple advantageous features including hollow structure, abundant active sites, fast Zn2+ ion diffusion, and partial Co substitution, the CoMn‐PBA HSs electrode shows efficient zinc ion storage properties in terms of high capacity, decent rate capability and prolonged cycle life., Co‐substituted Mn‐rich Prussian Blue Analog (PBA) hollow spheres (CoMn‐PBA HSs) are rationally designed and synthesized through an efficient self‐templating approach. Benefiting from the hollow structure and partial Co substitution, the CoMn‐PBA HSs electrode exhibits enhanced zinc ion storage performance with high capacity, favorable rate capability, and impressive cycling stability.

The sol-gel process has been applied to cotton fabrics to cover the fibers with a silica-based film, which can improve their thermal oxidation and combustion behaviors. Silica sol, silane coupling agent 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH560) and flame retardant zinc borate (ZB) are used together to prepare SiO2-KH560-ZB hybrid sol, which is then finished on the surface of cotton fabric through impregnation and baking. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index analysis (LOI) and microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC) are used to characterize functional groups, thermal stability and flammability properties of finished fabrics. Surface morphology of sol modified cotton fabrics are analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (EDX). Results show the sols are successfully converted into gel coatings onto cotton fabrics, and continuous smoldering phenomenon of resulted fabrics disappears. ΔLOI/Δm of SiO2-KH560-ZB coated cotton fabric reaches the highest of 0.37%/g, char residue rate is as high as 28.43% and the peak heat release rate (PHRR) is reduced by 26.9% (83.7 W/g). KH560 has a significant coupling effect on combining components in the sol system and increases compatibility between sols and cotton fabrics. ZB (cooling, separation, dilution and suppression), silica sol (physical barrier) and KH560 show excellent synergistic effects in enhancing overall flame retardancy.

Palladium diselenide (PdSe2), a noble transition metal dichalcogenide has attracted increasing attention in recent years due to its outstanding semiconductor properties. In this study, 2D PdSe2 nanofilms with thicknesses ranging from 2 to 28 nm and their heterostructures with Si substrates (PdSe2/Si heterostructures) were synthesized via a simple selenization method. Electrical transport characterizations based on field-effect transistor devices indicate that the few-layer PdSe2 nanofilms exhibit a p-type semiconducting behavior. The optimal sensing performance of the PdSe2/Si-8 sensor (8 nm-thick PdSe2) exhibits a comparable response toward NO2 gas (ΔR/Ra = ∼7.2% to 100 ppb and ∼18% to 1 ppm) at room temperature (RT). This response may result from the heterostructure effect and maze-type surface. Additionally, the PdSe2/Si-8 sensor has selectivity toward NO2 compared with other gases including NO, H2, CO, NH3, and C2H5OH. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the largest adsorption energy and charge transfer between NO2 and the PdSe2 surface, which coincides well with the experimental results. Moreover, the PdSe2/Si-8 sensor also exhibits repeatability and long-term stability during about 4 months at RT. These results indicate that the PdSe2/Si heterostructures may be a promising nanomaterial for room-temperature NO2 gas-sensing devices.

Carbon fibre-reinforced silicon carbide composites (C/SiC) are a type of high-temperature structural ceramics that can be widely applied in aerospace, hypersonic aircraft, and military fields. However, the practical application of such materials in some complex high-temperature environments is still limited owing to drawbacks such as the bulging problem. In this study, the bulging of a C/SiC coating in a high-temperature wind tunnel is investigated. The surface data of specimens in the high-temperature arc wind tunnel were obtained using optical visualisation equipment, and the entire process of the formation of coating bulges, and their evolution and fusion is illustrated. Then, a fully coupled thermal fluid-solid simulation model is established, and the influence of defects on the internal heat transfer of materials is analysed. Further, the thermal fluid-solid coupling simulation technology is also used to analyse the bulging process of the coating to understand the mechanism of chemical reactions in defects between the coating and substrate. This work can serve as a guide for the screening and improvement of the material coating process.

Dysregulated expression of microRNAs (miRNAs or miRs) has been implicated in the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, their underlying role in the complication of detrusor fibrosis remains poorly understood. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the potential functional relevance of miR-363 in detrusor fibrosis of rats with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced T2DM through the predicted target gene collagen type I alpha 2 (Col1a2). Immunohistochemical analysis found an increase in the positive expression of collagen type III alpha 1 (Col3a1) and Col1a2 in detrusor tissues, where miR-363 expression was decreased. Next, gain- and loss-of-function experiments were performed to clarify the effects of miR-363 and Col1a2 on the activities of bladder detrusor cells. Of note, binding affinity between miR-363 and Col1a2 was verified by a dual-luciferase reporter gene assay and RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) assay. Upregulated miR-363 inhibited Col1a2 expression, which led to increased expression of B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) and Smad7 and accelerated cell viability, along with decreases in cell apoptosis and Col3a1, Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax), transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1, and Smad4 expressions. In conclusion, miR-363 upregulation reduces detrusor fibrosis in rats with STZ-induced T2DM through suppression of the TGF-β1/Smad signaling pathway by targeting Col1a2. Therefore, our study provided further insights for the development of new therapeutic targets for T2DM., Graphical Abstract, miR-363 can inhibit Col1a2, which promotes viability and reduces apoptosis of detrusor cells in rats with STZ-induced T2DM through the inhibition of the TGF-β1/Smad signaling pathway, which ultimately leads to the alleviation of detrusor fibrosis. This study provides new evidence regarding the functional actions of miR-363 in T2DM.

Organic electrical gas sensors have been developed for many decades because of their high sensitivity and selectivity. However, their industrialization is severely hindered by their intrinsic humidity susceptibility and poor recovery. Conventional organic sensory materials can only operate at room temperature owing to their weak intermolecular interactions. Herein, we demonstrate using a croconate polymer (poly-4,4'-biphenylcroconate) that the "ion-in-conjugation" concept enables organic gas sensors to operate at 100 °C and 70 % relative humidity with almost complete recovery. The fabricated sensor had a parts-per-billion (ppb) detection limit for NO2 and showed the highest sensitivity (2526 ppm-1 at 40 ppb) of all reported NO2 chemiresistive sensors. Furthermore, charge transfer increased with temperature. Theoretical calculations and in situ FTIR spectra confirmed the ion-in-conjugation-inspired hydrogen bond as key for excellent sensitivity. A NO2 alarm system was assembled to demonstrate the feasibility of this sensor.

Introduction Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) swept rapidly throughout the world. So far, no therapeutics have yet proven to be effective. Ribavirin was recommended for the treatment of COVID-19 in China because of its in vitro activity. However, evidence supporting its clinical use with good efficacy is still lacking. Methods A total of 208 confirmed severe COVID-19 patients who were hospitalized in Wuhan Union West Campus between 1 February 2020 and 10 March 2020 were enrolled in the retrospective study. Patients were divided into two groups based on the use of ribavirin. The primary endpoint was the time to clinical improvement. The secondary endpoints included mortality, survival time, time to throat swab SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid negative conversion, and the length of hospital stay. Results 68 patients were treated with ribavirin while 140 not. There were no significant between-group differences in demographic characteristics, baseline laboratory test results, treatment, and distribution of ordinal scale scores at enrollment, except for coexisting diseases especially cancer (ribavirin group vs no ribavirin group, P = 0.01). Treatment with ribavirin was not associated with a difference in the time to clinical improvement (P = 0.48, HR = 0.88, 95% CI = 0.63–1.25). There were also no significant differences between-group in SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid negative conversion, mortality, survival time, and the length of hospital stay. Conclusions In hospitalized adult patients with severe COVID-19, no significant benefit was observed with ribavirin treatment.

Immunotherapy has become a revolutionary subject in cancer therapy during the past few years. Immune checkpoint-targeting antibodies (Abs) could boost anticancer immune responses. However, certain protein-based immunotherapies revealed side effects and unfavorable biodistribution, so effective non-protein options with lower side effects are highly sought after. RNA’s ability to form various three-dimensional configurations allows for the creation of a variety of ligands to bind different cell receptors. The rubber-like properties of RNA nanoparticles (NPs) allow for swift lodging to cancer vasculature with little accumulation in vital organs, resulting in a favorable pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) profile and safe pharmacological parameters. Multi-specific drugs are expected to be the fourth wave of biopharmaceutical innovation. Herein, we report the development of multi-specific Ab-like RNA NPs carrying multiple ligands for immunotherapy. The stoichiometries and stereo conformations of the checkpoint-activating RNA NPs were optimized for T cell activation. When compared to mono- and bi-specific RNA NPs, the tri-specific Ab-like RNA NPs bound to the trimeric T cell receptor with the highest efficiency, showed the optimal T cell activation, and promoted the strongest anti-tumor function of immune cells. Animal trials demonstrated that the tri-specific RNA NPs inhibited cancer growth. This Ab-like RNA NP platform represents an alternative to protein Abs for tumor immunotherapy., Graphical abstract, RNA therapeutics have become popular recently. Ab-like RNA nanoparticles could replace traditional protein antibodies in cancer immunotherapy and prove that matching the stoichiometry of the ligand RNA nanoparticles to the stoichiometry of the respective receptor subunits is very important in relationship to therapeutic efficiency.

Hypoxia refers to insufficient oxygen amounts at the tissue level unable to maintain adequate homeostasis. Severe hypoxia may occur in the absence of subjective breathlessness due to respiratory failure. Precise monitoring of low blood oxygen saturation is crucially desired, catering to the clinical requirements. However, current pulse oximeters cannot function well in monitoring peripheral oxygen saturation limited by the weak peripheral blood circulation at a low oxygen level. In this work, we propose a flexible hybrid electronic (FHE) with a compact structure and high sensitivity for conveniently monitoring hypoxia. This FHE is composed of 10-µm thickness semiconductors with different materials, functionalities, and sizes. Its performance is demonstrated by monitoring arterial blood oxygen saturation (SaO2) at the body's different arteries. The absolute error is less than 2% within a SaO2 ranging from 99% to 63%. The efficient techniques presented in this work may bring light to the next-generation flexible hybrid electronics and provide potential widespread use in research and clinical applications, especially for emergency treatment.

An efficient and eco-friendly protocol for synthesizing difluoromethylated oxindoles through a visible-light induced one-pot tandem reaction of N-arylacrylamides, difluoroacetic acid and PhI(OAc)2 was developed. This reaction proceeded in the absence of any additive, base, metal-catalyst and external photosensitizer, using cheap and easily available CHF2CO2H as the difluoromethylation reagent and bulk biomass-derived 2-MeTHF as the sole solvent. 26 Examples of N-arylacrylamide substrates were investigated, and all of them successfully underwent difluoromethylation to deliver the target products in good to excellent yields.

We previously examined the associations between dietary dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) intake from fish consumption and type 2 diabetes (T2D) prevalence in Ontario and Manitoba. This study aims to further explore the relationship in a regionally representative sample of First Nations adults living on-reserve across Canada.Dietary, health and lifestyle data collected by the cross-sectional First Nations Food, Nutrition and Environment Study (2008-2018) were analyzed. This participatory study included 6091 First Nations adult participants who answered questions on T2D. The consumption of locally caught fish was estimated with a food frequency questionnaire. A total of 551 samples from 96 fish species were collected and analyzed for the presence of DDE and PCBs. The associations between fish and dietary DDE/PCBs intake with self-reported T2D were investigated using multiple logistic regression models adjusted for confounders.Dietary exposure to DDE (2.11 ng/kg/bw) and PCBs (1.47 ng/kg/bw) vs no exposure was positively associated with T2D with ORs of 2.33 (95% CI: 1.24-4.35) for DDE and 1.43 (95% CI: 1.01-3.59) for PCBs. The associations were stronger among females (DDE OR = 3.11 (1.41-6.88); PCBs OR = 1.76 (1.10-3.65)) and older individuals (DDE OR = 2.64 (1.12-6.20); PCBs OR = 1.44 (1.01-3.91)) as compared with males and younger participants. Also, significant dose-response relationships were found for fish consumption in females only.This study confirms our previous findings that dietary DDE/PCBs exposure may increase the risk of T2D. The effect of DDE/PCBs from fish consumption is driven by geographical differences in DDE/PCBs concentrations in fish and by the amount of fish consumed, and is more prominent in females than in males.RéSUMé: OBJECTIF: Nous avons précédemment examiné les associations entre l’apport alimentaire de dichlorodiphényldichloroéthylène (DDE) et de polychlorobiphényles (PCB) provenant de la consommation de poisson et la prévalence du diabète de type 2 (DT2) en Ontario et au Manitoba. Cette étude vise à explorer davantage la relation dans un échantillon régionalement représentatif d’adultes des Premières Nations vivant dans des réserves partout au Canada. MéTHODE: Les données sur l’alimentation, la santé et le mode de vie recueillies par l’Étude transversale sur l’alimentation, la nutrition et l’environnement chez les Premières Nations (2008–2018) ont été analysées. Cette étude participative comprenait 6 091 participants adultes des Premières Nations qui ont répondu à des questions sur le DT2. La consommation de poisson pêché localement a été estimée à l’aide d’un questionnaire de fréquence alimentaire. Au total, 551 échantillons de 96 espèces de poissons ont été prélevés et analysés pour la présence de DDE et de PCB. Les associations entre la consommation de poisson et l’exposition aux DDE/PCB avec le DT2 auto-déclaré ont été étudiées à l’aide de modèles de régression logistique multiples ajustés pour les facteurs de confusion. Les associations étaient plus fortes chez les femmes (DDE OR = 3,11 (1,41–6,88); PCB OR = 1,76 (1,10–3,65)) et les individus plus âgés (DDE OR = 2,64 (1,12–6,20); PCB OR = 1,44 (1,01–3,91)) par rapport aux hommes et aux participants plus jeunes. De plus, des relations dose-réponse significatives ont été trouvées pour la consommation de poisson chez les femmes seulement. CONCLUSION: Cette étude confirme nos conclusions précédentes selon lesquelles l’exposition à travers l’alimentation aux DDE/PCB peut augmenter le risque de DT2. L’effet du DDE/PCB sur la consommation de poisson est lié aux différences géographiques dans les concentrations de DDE/PCB dans le poisson et à la quantité de poisson consommée, et est plus important chez les femmes que chez les hommes.

Encapsulating a certain guest molecule in an assigned molecular compartment and then endowing the corresponding potential remains a huge challenge for metal-organic frameworks. To this end, we demonstrate a good example, for the first time, based on an actinide-based MOF. The used MOF (namely, ECUT-300) shows a unique uranyl-TPE anionic skeleton with three distinct cages, viz., mesopore A (2.8 nm), mesopore B (2.0 nm), and micropore C (0.9 nm). Through solid-liquid reaction, a RhB+ molecule can be encapsulated into ECUT-300 with the exact location in mesopore B, whereas the encapsulation of a metal-organic cation of [Fe(tpy)2]3+ was observed with the location in micropore C, suggesting unprecedented classified encapsulation. Impressively, the potential of the resulting guest@MOF composites is also highly dependent on the type of encapsulated guest molecules, for example, white-light emission for RhB+ and selective adsorption of C2H2 over CO2 for [Fe(tpy)2]3+.

In this study, a simple, quick, sensitive and reliable method utilizing ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry method was validated for simultaneous quantification of six main 2-(2-phenylethyl) chromones, including agarotetrol, isoagarotetrol, (5S,6R,7R,8S)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroxy-(4-methoxyphenethyl)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-chromen-4-one, 8-chloro-2-(2-phenyl ethyl)-5,6,7-trihydroxy-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrochromone, 6,7-dimethoxy-2-(2-phenylethyl) chromone, and 2-(2-phenylethyl) chromone in rat plasma after oral administration of agarwood ethanol extract. Separation was performed on a Waters ACQUITY UPLC BEH C18 column (2.1 × 100 mm, 1.7 μm) using gradient elution with mobile phase of 0.2% formic acid-water and acetonitrile. The tandem mass was performed in the multiple reaction monitoring mode with positive ionization. The calibration curves indicated good linearity (r2 > 0.99) over the corresponding concentration range. The precision and accuracy were within the acceptable range. Mean absolute recoveries of all analytes were between 73.31% and 94.76%, and the relative standard deviations of matrix effects were not higher than 15%. The six analytes were proven to be stable during sample storage and analysis procedures. The validated method was successfully applied to pharmacokinetic study of six 2-(2-phenylethyl) chromones in rat after oral administration of agarwood ethanol extract for the first time. This study could serve as a reference and provide theoretical guidance for further pharmacodynamic research and clinical applications of agarwood.

The pyrolysis tar from Naomaohu coal was separated by distillation apparatus. Four components of heavy oil above 320°C were analyzed. The result showed the colloid content was 28.84% and the asphaltene content was 35.12%, and both were difficult to convert in hydrogenation. 13C-NMR results showed that the relative molar ratio of aromatic carbon in heavy oil was 71.16%, which indicated that aromatic compounds in heavy fraction were dominant. The heavy fraction was treated by suspension bed and fixed bed cracking. The asphaltene and colloid were almost completely converted. The yield of naphtha with boiling point below 180°C was 66.95%, and the diesel with boiling point higher than 180°C was 17.84%. Oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur contained in heteroatoms were almost completely removed. Catalytic reforming of naphtha was carried out. The results showed that the number of cycloalkanes decreased by 60.23%, and the number of aromatics increased by 65.8%, which indicated that the dehydrogenation and aromatization of cycloalkanes occurred mainly. While the number of n-alkanes decreased by 13.42%, which indicated that the isomerization and cyclization of n-alkanes occurred simultaneously. The catalytic reforming oil contained more benzene, toluene, xylene and ethylbenzene, and the contents were 11.97%, 23.15%, 21.43% and 3.48% respectively. In the direct conversion process of heavy oil from coal pyrolysis, the transmissibility of basic structural units of coal was significantly reflected.
