The novelty of the presented research is the determination of the nitrogen and phosphorus fraction in the liquid fraction of digestate from agricultural biogas plants. This information is important because it can help in proposing possible further liquid fraction management or developing of new technologies for their purification. The research covered digestates from agricultural biogas plants, obtained from the fermentation of three different groups of waste, i.e. agricultural lignocellulosic waste (where corn silage was a monosubstrate or a dominant co-substrate), food waste (where fruit and vegetable waste or distillery residue were monosubstrate or dominant co-substrate) and livestock manure (where cow manure was a monosubstrate or a dominant co-substrate). Concentrations of nutrients in the liquid fraction of digestates varied within a wide range (230.9-649.1 mg PO43-/L and 1363-3211 mg N/L), and their content was determined by the feedstock characteristic. The highest concentrations of organic phosphorus were found in the liquid fraction of digestates from the fermentation of distillery brew and livestock manure, and the lowest in the fermentation of fruit and vegetable waste. In the liquid fraction of digestates from agricultural biogas plants, regardless of the composition of the feedstock, the dominant nitrogen form was ammonium nitrogen (from 60% to 90% TN). Organic nitrogen was dominated by CON fraction, which was from 35% to 54% of ON. It was 1.3-1.6 times higher than the DON fraction.

Measurements for determining the effect of chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT) on the efficiency of pollutant removal from wastewater were carried out using conventional inorganic coagulants PIX113 with polymer A110 (Kemipol, Police, Poland) and unconventional cationic organic coagulants Cofloc (Attana, Coalville, UK) C29510 (Kemipol, Police, Poland) and Sedifloc 575 (3F Chimica, Sandrigo, Italy). The average removal efficiency in the 2-hour sedimentation process was 46%, 34%, 8%, 12% for the total suspended solids, organic matter (COD), total nitrogen, and total phosphorus, respectively. The use of organic coagulants contributed to 14&ndash, 81% increase of pollutant removal efficiency. Substantial discrepancies in biological nutrient removal processes were not discovered in two-phase (anaerobic-anoxic) experiments without and with the addition of the organic coagulants. The increase in organic matter removal efficiency as a result of the CEPT process may contribute to a 65&ndash, 80% increase in biogas production. The conducted research confirms the possibility of using organic coagulants in the primary precipitation process in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in accordance with the principles of maximum energy recovery, thereby promoting renewable energy sources. Additionally, organic coagulants, as opposed to inorganic ones, do not cause a significant increase of chloride and sulfate ion concentrations, which facilitates the use of treated wastewater in the water reuse systems, such as irrigation of agricultural crops.

The effect of distillery waste product (fusel oil) as an alternative external organic carbon source (EOCS) was investigated in terms of the metabolic properties of denitrifying polyphosphate accumulating organisms (DPAOs). Samples of the non-acclimated biomass were collected from a local full-scale wastewater treatment plant employing A2/O type bioreactors. The acclimated biomass was obtained after cultivation (with fusel oil added) in a bench-scale reactor with a process configuration similar to the full-scale bioreactor. Changes in the functional properties of the biomass were investigated by measuring the phosphate release/uptake rates (PRRs and PURs), and nitrate utilization rates (NURs) with fusel oil in anaerobic-anoxic batch tests. Furthermore, a validated extended Activated Sludge Model no 2d (ASM2d) was used as a supporting tool to analyze the experimental results and estimate the contribution of DPAOs to the overall denitrification. In the non-acclimated biomass with fusel oil, the PRRs, PURs and NURs were low and close to the rates obtained in a reference test without adding EOCS. With the acclimated biomass, the PUR and NUR increased significantly, i.e., 3.5 and 2.7 times, respectively. In the non-acclimated biomass, approximately 60.0 ± 3.6% and 20.0 ± 2.2% of the total NUR was attributed to the utilization of endogenous carbon and examined EOCS, respectively. The remaining portion (20% of the total NUR) was attributed to PHA utilization (linked to PO4-P uptake) by DPAOs. With the acclimated biomass, the contribution of the EOCS to the NUR increased to approximately 60%, while the contribution of the endogenous carbon source decreased accordingly. Very accurate predictions of PURs and NURs (R2 = 0.97–1.00) were obtained with the extended ASM2d. Based on model simulations, it was estimated that the activity of DPAOs and denitrifying ordinary heterotrophic organisms corresponded to approximately 20% and 80% of the total NUR, respectively. The anammox-enriched granular sludge was successfully formed during the long-term biogranulation experiment lasting over 330 days. The cultivation was conducted at 30 ◦C in a 10-L sequencing batch reactor (SBR) fed with synthetic medium containing ammonia, nitrite and trace elements. The properties of the developed granules were investigated in terms of the biomass activity (including the growth rate of anammox bacteria), size distribution of the granules as well as nitrogen removal performance and pathways. The compositions of the microbial communities in the inoculum sludge and ultimate granules were compared using the metagenomic analysis. The mean particle size of the biomass increased from 290 m (inoculum sludge) to 728 m (ultimate granules). The overall nitrogen removal rate (NRR) and specific anammox activity (SAA) reached themaximumvalue of 5.3 kg Nm−3 d−1 and 1.6 kg NkgVSS−1 d−1, respectively. In the matured granules, Planctomycetes were the most abundant phylum (aprox. 44% of total 16S rRNA reads), exclusively represented by Candidatus Brocadia. Based on the 16S rRNA reads frequency derived from Planctomycetes in the total metagenomic library and volatile suspended solids (VSS) concentrations of the inoculum sludge and ultimate granules, the observed specific growth rate of anammox bacteria was estimated at 0.14 d−1 over the entire study period.

The aim of the study was to determine the mobility of phosphorus forms in raw organic waste and from the solid and liquid fractions of digestate. To achieve the purpose of this study, the components (including livestock manure, agricultural waste, food waste, sewage sludge) and their post fermentation products were considered. Subsequently, the effect of the fermentation process on the mobility of phosphorus forms in post-fermentation fractions (solid and liquid) was investigated. Then, the evaluation of the fertilising potential of digestate fractions was assessed. The available organic and inorganic phosphorus forms were determined according to the Standards in Measurements and Testing (SMT) Programme extraction protocol and according to the acid molybdate spectrophotometric method. It has been shown that phosphorus in digestates occurred mainly in inorganic forms with Fe, Al, Mn, Mg and Ca ions. Its proportion in relation to total phosphorus ranged from 80 to 90%. The lowest phosphorus content was found in digestate from the fermentation of agricultural and food waste (fruit and vegetables), while digestate from livestock manure and sewage sludge fermentation was rich in phosphorus. It was shown that the solid fractions of digestate represented from 30 to 70% of highly labile phosphorus (i.e. phosphorus with organic matter and in bonds with Al, Fe, Mg and Mn oxides and hydroxides) in relation to total phosphorus. However, the share of labile phosphorus forms in the liquid fraction of digestates was much higher and accounted for 80-90% of the total phosphorus.

A simple, accurate and selective HPLC method was developed and validated for determination of quercetin and kaempferol, which are the main flavonols in broccoli. The separation was achieved on a reversed-phase C18 column using a mobile phase composed of methanol/water (60/40) and phosphoric acid 0.2% at a flow rate of 1.0 ml min-1. The detection was carried out on a DAD detector at 370 nm. This method was validated according to the requirements for new methods, which include selectivity, linearity, precision, accuracy, limit of detection and limit of quantitation. The current method demonstrates good linearity, with R2 > 0.99. The recovery is within 98.07-102.15% and 97.92-101.83% for quercetin and kaempferol, respectively. The method is selective, in that quercetin and kaempferol are well separated from other compounds of broccoli with good resolution. The low limit of detection and limit of quantitation of quercetin and kaempferol enable the detection and quantitation of these flavonoids in broccoli at low con–centrations.

The research was carried out in two semi-natural systems (the polishing ponds in Swarzewo and the free water surface constructed wetland in Zarnowiec) in Poland. They were built as the 3rd stage of a conventional mechanical–biological wastewater treatment plant. These systems were built to improve the quality of the effluent of treated wastewater. In the polishing ponds and FWS wetland system, suspended solids, organic matter as well as nitrogen are removed, but there is problem with phosphorus removal. The aim of this paper was to determine phosphorus removal from treated wastewater as well as the characteristics of the bottom sediments with respect to phosphorus fractions and their transformation due to seasonal changes. The total efficiency of the phosphorus removal from the wastewater in Swarzewo was only 23.7%, while in Zarnowiec the total concentration of phosphorus in the effluent increased. It was found that in Swarzewo phosphorus bound with organic matter (NaOH–P fraction) had the largest impact on the deposition process and the release of phosphorus from the sediments to the wastewater, while in Zarnowiec–phosphorus loosely absorbed on the particle surface (NH4Cl–P fraction) and bound with iron (Fe–P fraction) was the most significant. The sediments from the semi-natural systems are a rich source of phosphorus, which is directly assimilable by plants. In the sediments from Swarzewo, the mobile forms (the sum of NH4Cl–P, Fe–P, NaOH–P) constituted 79% of the total phosphorus. The sediments from Zarnowiec are characterized by higher concentrations at these forms (about 96.0%). The sediments are capable of releasing phosphorus, so they should be scooped. The relatively low concentration of heavy metals and high concentrations of nitrogen and mobile fractions of phosphorus indicate, however, that after hygienization, the analyzed sediments can be potentially used as an initial product for the production of fertilizer.

Kynurenine aminotransferase II (KAT-II) is the astrocytic enzyme catalyzing the synthesis of kynurenic acid (KYNA), an endogenous inhibitor of the α7-nicotinic receptor and the NMDA receptor (NMDAr). A previous study demonstrated an increase of KYNA synthesis in the brain of rats with thioacetamide (TAA)-induced acute liver failure. Here we show that TAA administration increases KAT-II expression in the rat cerebral cortex and the effect is mimicked in cerebral cortical astrocytes in culture treated with high (5 mM) concentration of ammonia. KAT-II expression in control and TAA-treated rats was increased by NMDAr antagonist memantine, and the effects of TAA and memantine appeared additive. In astrocytes, the NMDAr antagonist MK-801 raised KAT-II expression as well, while NMDA added alone had no effect. Glutamate decreased KAT-II mRNA level, which was attenuated by MK-801. The results suggest that stimulation of KAT-II expression during hepatic encephalopathy may be associated with a partial inactivation of astrocytic NMDAr by ammonia.

Folic Acid - The Occurrence and the Role in Human Nutrition Folic acid occurs naturally in the salt form of folic acid - the so-called folate. The human body cannot synthesize it, and therefore it must be supplied from outside. Folic acid is involved in the synthesis and proper functioning of RNA and DNA acids. It is essential for growth and division of all body cells, which is particularly important during active growth or in the fetal and newborn life. In children and adults, folate along with vitamin B12 are involved in the production of red blood cells. Current research indicate on the existence in Poland and in Central and Northern Europe of significant deficiencies of folic acid in the diet. Deficiency of folic acid in our diet is due to the fact that we consume more highly processed food. Stored and heat-treated food loses a large part of folates. The most common pathological processes associated with a deficiency of folic acid in the body are neural tube defects, megaloblastic anaemia, disturbances in the functioning of the nervous and cardiovascular system, as well as the development of certain types of cancer. Effective methods to increase folate intake are still being searched for.

Background Lichen planus still remains a disease of unclear etiology. Inconclusive reports exist on the role of stress the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in this disease. The objective of this study was to find associations between levels of stress and indices of the endocrine and immune response in patients with lichen planus. Methods A total of 57 patients with lichen planus and 27 healthy control volunteers took part in the study. All participants completed questionnaires measuring the frequency of stressful life events. Blood samples were collected and analyzed for levels of endocrine and immune parameters: neopterin, cortisol, interleukin (IL)-2, IL-6, IL-18, soluble IL-2 receptor (sIL-2R), sIL-6R, sFasL, T lymphocyte antigens CD3, CD4, CD8, CD25, CD69, HLA-DR, CD16/56, CD45RO and CD45RA. Results Patients differed significantly from the controls in the levels of neopterin (but not cortisol), expression of CD25, CD16, CD8, and CD45RA antigens on T lymphocytes. Patients had also significantly higher levels of sIL-2R, sFasL, sIL-6R and IL-18 than healthy controls. Patients and controls did not differ in the overall frequency of stressful life events experienced over 1 year prior to the study. However, two subgroups of patients with various stress levels differed significantly in the expression of CD25, HLA-DR, CD45RO, and CD45RA on T lymphocytes. Conclusions Our findings suggest that stress may alter numerous parameters of endocrine and immune response in lichen planus, which provides support for its role in the etiopathogenesis of this disease.

The operation of three hybrid constructed wetland systems composed with vertical flow (VF-CW) and horizontal flow (HF-CW) constructed wetlands was analysed. The analyses were carried out in two wetlands (CWs) located in northern Poland: in Wiklino and Wieszyno and one in Wiedersberg in Germany. The wetlands were supplied with domestic sewage after mechanical treatment. It was proved that the decomposition rate of organic matter was determined by proportions of organic hardly decomposed (COD-X(S)) and non-decomposed (COD-X(I)) suspension. It was proved that increase of organic matter (OM) concentration in filter material of first beds in plants: Wiklino and Wieszyno caused clogging and decreased removal efficiency. In the two-years long study no accumulation of organic matter in the VF-CW in Wiedersberg was observed. Therefore, the aerobic conditions maintained in the bed enabled efficient decomposition of soluble organic easy-to-decompose fraction (COD-S(S))and COD-X(S) and no accumulation of OM was observed. The effectiveness of COD removal in the VF-CW in Wiklino and Wieszyno was lower in comparison to Wiedersberg, which was due to lower biodegradation potential of treated sewage (in Wiklino) and accumulation of OM in the sub-surface bed layer, resulting in pores clogging and reduction of air inflow (in Wieszyno).

The effect of the different type of organic substance present in sewage on the organic matter accumulation and removal effectiveness in the hybrid constructed wetlands has been analysed. Effectiveness of organic matter removal from domestic sewage in hydrophyte beds depends on the type of organic matter fractions and their concentrations. Basing on analysis of COD fractions (soluble and suspended easy-to-decompose and hard-todecompose fractions) it was proven that accumulation of organic matter in hydrophyte beds is determined by hard-to-decompose suspended fraction. Colmatation in the HF-CW beds was observed for the loads over 10.0 CODXsg m−2 d−1, while in the VF-CW beds – for the loads over 12.5 CODXsg m−2 d−1.

Macrophyte plants e.g. reed, cattails, bulrush, can be applied to sewage sludge utilisation. One of the first facilities of this type in the Gdansk region (Northern Poland) was established in Darzlubie in 1995 and primary sludge has been utilised in reed beds there. The objective of the undertaken research was evaluating the influence of sewage sludge storage on its chemical and biological properties. A total of 5.5 m thick layer of primary, anaerobically stabilised sludge (moisture 90-96%) was loaded to the reed bed during 6 years of operation. As a consequence of dewatering and biochemical transformation, the sludge layer decreased to 30 cm. Moisture, organic matter, total nitrogen and total phosphorus contents, as well as coli index, Clostridium perfringens index and the number of Ascaris lumbricoides ova were measured. Also the contents of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cr and Cd) were determined in sludge samples. The study showed that sludge storage in reed beds results in dewatering and partial stabilisation. In the reed lagoons in Swarzewo and Zambrow, dewatering of secondary sludges was investigated. The results of measurements of the quality of sludge and effluent from the reed lagoon in Zambrow are also presented.
