This study presents a comprehensive structural analysis of the adducts formed upon the reaction of two Ru(III) complexes [HIsq][trans-RuIIICl4(dmso)(Isq)] (1) and [H2Ind][trans-RuIIICl4(dmso)(HInd)] (2) (where HInd-indazole, Isq-isoquinoline, analogs of NAMI-A) and two Ru(II) complexes, cis-[RuCl2(dmso)4] (c) and trans-[RuCl2(dmso)4] (t), with hen-egg white lysozyme (HEWL). Additionally, the crystal structure of an adduct of human lysozyme (HL) with ruthenium complex, [H2Ind][trans-RuCl4(dmso)(HInd)] was solved. X-ray crystallographic data analysis revealed that all studied Ru complexes, regardless of coordination surroundings and metal center charge, coordinate to the same amino acids (His15, Arg14, and Asp101) of HEWL, losing most of their original ligands. In the case of the 2-HL adduct, two distinct metalation sites: (i) Arg107, Arg113 and (ii) Gln127, Gln129, were identified. Crystallographic data were supported by studies of the interaction of 1 and 2 with HEWL in an aqueous solution. Hydrolytic stability studies revealed that both complexes 1 and 2 liberate the N-heterocyclic ligand under crystallization-like conditions (pH 4.5) as well as under physiological pH conditions, and this process is not significantly affected by the presence of HEWL. A comparative examination of nine crystal structures of Ru complexes with lysozyme, obtained through soaking and co-crystallization experiments, together with in-solution studies of the interaction between 1 and 2 with HEWL, indicates that the hydrolytic release of the N-heterocyclic ligand is one of the critical factors in the interaction between Ru complexes and lysozyme. This understanding is crucial in shedding light on the tendency of Ru complexes to target diverse metalation sites during the formation and in the final forms of the adducts with proteins. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) infection is a primary cause of otitis media (OM), the most common disease for which children are prescribed antibiotics. However, the abuse of antibiotics has led to a global increase in antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Nanozymes, as promising alternatives to traditional antibiotics, are being extensively utilized to combat AMR. Here, we synthesize a series of single-atom nanozymes (metal-C3N4 SANzymes) by loading four metals (Ag, Fe, Cu, Ru) with antibacterial properties onto a crystalline g-C3N4. These metal-C3N4 display a rob-like morphology and well-dispersed metal atoms. Among them, Ru-C3N4 demonstrates the optimal peroxidase-like activity (285.3 U mg–1), comparable to that of horseradish peroxidase (267.7 U mg–1). In vitro antibacterial assays reveal that Ru-C3N4 significantly inhibits S. aureus growth compared with other metal-C3N4 even at a low concentration (0.06 mg mL–1). Notably, Ru-C3N4 acts as a narrow-spectrum nanoantibiotic with relative specificity against Gram-positive bacteria. Biofilms formed by S. aureus are easily degraded by Ru-C3N4 due to its high peroxidase-like activity. In vivo, Ru-C3N4 effectively eliminates S. aureus and relieves ear inflammation in OM mouse models. However, untreated OM mice eventually develop hearing impairment. Due to its low metal load, Ru-C3N4 does not exhibit significant toxicity to blood, liver, or kidney. In conclusion, this study presents a novel SANzyme-based antibiotic that can effectively eliminate S. aureus and treat S. aureus-induced OM.

In 2022, Beller and coworkers achieved the reversible hydrogenation of CO2 to formic acid using a Mn(I)–PN5P complex with excellent activity and reusability of the catalyst. To understand the detailed mechanism for the reversible hydrogen release–storage process, especially the effects of the transition metal center in this process, we employed DFT calculations according to which Ru(II) and Fe(II) are considered as two alternatives to the Mn(I) center. Our computational results showed that the production of formic acid from CO2 hydrogenation is not thermodynamically favorable. The reversible hydrogen release–storage process actually occurs between CO2/H2 and formate rather than formic acid. Moreover, Mn(I) might not be a unique active metal for the reversible hydrogenation of CO2 to formate; Ru(II) would be a better option.

This article provides an overview of the development, structure and activity of various metal complexes with anti-cancer activity. Chemical researchers continue to work on the development and synthesis of new molecules that could act as anti-tumor drugs to achieve more favorable therapies. It is therefore important to have information about the various chemotherapeutic substances and their mode of action. This review focuses on metallodrugs that contain a metal as a key structural fragment, with cisplatin paving the way for their chemotherapeutic application. The text also looks at ruthenium complexes, including the therapeutic applications of phosphorescent ruthenium(II) complexes, emphasizing their dual role in therapy and diagnostics. In addition, the antitumor activities of titanium and gold derivatives, their side effects, and ongoing research to improve their efficacy and reduce adverse effects are discussed. Metallization of host defense peptides (HDPs) with various metal ions is also highlighted as a strategy that significantly enhances their anticancer activity by broadening their mechanisms of action.

Abstract The carbonyl group is arguably the most versatile functional group for synthetic purposes. Here, a series of N,N’‐bis(pyridylideneamide) (bisPYA) complexes of ruthenium(II), [Ru(cym)(bisPYA)Cl]+ (cym=cymene), were synthesized and applied as catalysts for Lemieux‐Johnson oxidation of alkenes to access carbonyl functionalities. Complexes bearing para‐ and ortho‐bisPYA ligands induce higher activity and selectivity than their mesoionic meta‐bisPYA analogues. The non‐coordinating counterion of the cationic complexes affects the catalytic performance markedly, with PF6− enhancing the activity compared to trifluoromethanesulfonate, OTf−. Likewise, replacing the anionic ancillary chloride ligand by a neutral and more labile MeCN ligand led to increased activity. Electrochemical and solubility measurements revealed no direct correlation of ligand donor strength to catalytic performance. Variation of the solvent mixture and the ratio of its components provided access to high‐performance catalysts. In H2O/MeCN/CH2Cl2 at 3 : 1:0.5 (v/v) ratio, turnover frequencies up to 10,000 h−1 were obtained for the Lemieux‐Johnson oxidation of styrene with these Ru(bisPYA) complexes, allowing quantitative conversions within 30 min at 0.1 mol % catalyst loadings and corresponding to a 5 times faster reaction than the best catalyst known to date for this transformation.

Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) envenomation is a medical emergency encountered in the Southeastern United States. The venom contains a snake venom thrombin-like enzyme (SVTLE) that is defibrinogenating, causing coagulopathy without effects on platelets in humans. This investigation utilized thrombelastographic methods to document this coagulopathy kinetically on the molecular level in a rabbit model of envenomation via the analyses of whole blood samples without and with platelet inhibition. Subsequently, the administration of a novel ruthenium compound containing site-directed antivenom abrogated the coagulopathic effects of envenomation in whole blood without platelet inhibition and significantly diminished loss of coagulation in platelet-inhibited samples. This investigation provides coagulation kinetic insights into the molecular interactions and results of SVTLE on fibrinogen-dependent coagulation and confirmation of the efficacy of a ruthenium antivenom. These results serve as a rationale to investigate the coagulopathic effects of other venoms with this model and assess the efficacy of this site-directed antivenom.

Ruthenium chloride (RuCl3) is widely utilized for synthesis and catalysis of numerous compounds in academia and industry and is utilized as a key molecule in a variety of compounds with medical applications. Interestingly, RuCl3 has been demonstrated to modulate human plasmatic coagulation and serves as a constituent of a compounded inorganic antivenom that neutralizes the coagulopathic effects of snake venom in vitro and in vivo. Using thrombelastography, this investigation sought to determine if RuCl3 inhibition of the fibrinogenolytic effects of Crotalus atrox venom could be modulated by vehicle composition in human plasma. Venom was exposed to RuCl3 in 0.9% NaCl, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), or 0.9% NaCl containing 1% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). RuCl3 inhibited venom-mediated delay in the onset of thrombus formation, decreased clot growth velocity, and decreased clot strength. PBS and DMSO enhanced the effects of RuCl3. It is concluded that while a Ru-based cation is responsible for significant inhibition of venom activity, a combination of Ru-based ions containing phosphate and DMSO enhances RuCl3-mediated venom inhibition. Additional investigation is indicated to determine what specific Ru-containing molecules cause venom inhibition and what other combinations of inorganic/organic compounds may enhance the antivenom effects of RuCl3.

In the evolving landscape of portable electronics, there is a critical demand for components that meld stretchability with optical transparency, especially in supercapacitors. Traditional materials fall short in harmonizing conductivity, stretchability, transparency, and capacity. Although poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) stands out as an exemplary candidate, further performance enhancements are necessary to meet the demands of practical applications. This study presents an innovative and effective method for enhancing electrochemical properties by homogeneously incorporating Ru(III) into PEDOT:PSS. These Ru(III) PEDOT:PSS complexes are readily synthesized by dipping PEDOT:PSS films in RuCl3 solution for no longer than one minute, leveraging the high specific capacitance of Ru(III) while minimizing interference with transmittance. The supercapacitor made with this Ru(III) PEDOT:PSS complex demonstrated an areal capacitance of 1.62 mF cm−2 at a transmittance of 73.5%, which was 155% higher than that of the supercapacitor made with PEDOT:PSS under comparable transparency. Notably, the supercapacitor retained 87.8% of its initial capacitance even under 20% tensile strain across 20,000 cycles. This work presents a blueprint for developing stretchable and transparent supercapacitors, marking a significant stride toward next-generation wearable electronics.

The porous architectures of oxygen cathodes are highly desired for high-capacity lithium–oxygen batteries (LOBs) to support cathodic catalysts and provide accommodation for discharge products. However, controllable porosity is still a challenge for laminated cathodes with cathode materials and binders, since polymer binders usually shield the active sites of catalysts and block the pores of cathodes. In addition, polymer binders such as poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) are not stable under the nucleophilic attack of intermediate product superoxide radicals in the oxygen electrochemical environment. The parasitic reactions and blocking effect of binders deteriorate and then quickly shut down the operation of LOBs. Herein, the present work proposes a binder-free three-dimensional (3D) porous graphene (PG) cathode for LOBs, which is prepared by the self-assembly and the chemical reduction of GO with triblock copolymer soft templates (Pluronic F127). The interconnected mesoporous architecture of resultant 3D PG cathodes achieved an ultrahigh capacity of 10,300 mAh g−1 for LOBs. Further, the cathodic catalysts ruthenium (Ru) and manganese dioxide (MnO2) were, respectively, loaded onto the inner surface of PG cathodes to lower the polarization and enhance the cycling performance of LOBs. This work provides an effective way to fabricate free-standing 3D porous oxygen cathodes for high-performance LOBs.

Green hydrogen production through the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a promising solution for transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. To enable the use of a variety of electrolytes with different pH values, HER catalysts with pH universality are highly desirable but their performance remains mediocre. Herein, a pH‐universal HER catalyst composed of ruthenium nanoparticles decorated on amorphous Ni‐doped MoO3 (a–Ni–MoO3) nanowire support is reported, that is, Ru/a–Ni–MoO3, which achieves enhanced performance as compared to the commercial Ru/C catalyst. Electron transfer from Ru to a–Ni–MoO3 is identified by spectroscopic techniques, which results in a modified electronic structure of the Ru active sites with a reduced electron density of 4d states near the Fermi level. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that the modulated electronic structure weakens the interactions between the Ru active sites and the reaction intermediates, which facilitates the HER reaction steps including H intermediate desorption and water dissociation. Experimental and theoretical findings provide insight into enhancing pH‐universal HER performance through modulation of electrocatalyst electronic structure.

The modification of the methyl group of 4′-(p-tolyl)-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine produced the novel unnatural amino acid 3-(4-([2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridin]-4′-yl)phenyl)-2-aminopropanoic acid (phet). Mononuclear heteroleptic ruthenium complexes of the general formulae [Ru(L1)(L2)](PF6)2 (L1 = 2-acetylamino-2-(4-[2,2′:6′,2″]terpyridine-4′-yl-benzyl)-malonic acid diethyl ester, (phem), 3-(4-([2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridin]-4′-yl)phenyl)-2-aminopropanoic acid, (phet), and L2 = 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine (tpy), 4′-phenyl-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine (ptpy), 4′-(p-tolyl)-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine (mptpy)), as well as the homoleptic [Ru(phem)2](PF6)2 and [Ru(phet)2](PF6)2, were synthesized and characterized by means of NMR spectroscopic techniques, elemental analysis, and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The photophysical properties of the synthesized complexes were also studied.

Two new ruthenium complexes with chelating-ether benzylidene ligands bearing a furan moiety were synthesized and characterized, including X-ray crystallography. They initiated fast, also at 0 °C, and were found to be highly active in a variety of ring-closing, ene-yne, and cross-metathesis reactions, including an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) model, which makes them good candidates for the transformation of complex polyfunctional compounds that require mild reaction conditions.

Abstract A heterogenized alternative to the homogeneous precapture of CO2 with amines and subsequent hydrogenation to MeOH was developed using aminated silica and a Ru‐MACHOTM catalyst. Commercial mesoporous silica was modified with three different amino‐silane monomers and used as support for the Ru catalyst. These composites were studied by TEM and solid‐state NMR spectroscopy before and after the catalytic reaction. These catalytic reactions were conducted at 155 °C at a H2 and CO2 pressures of 75 and 2 bar, respectively, with the heterogeneous system (gas‐solid) being probed with gas‐phase infrared spectroscopy used to quantify the resulting products. High turnover number (TON) values were observed for the samples aminated with secondary amines.

The design of catalysts active for ammonia synthesis under mild conditions of temperature and pressure is a new grail for its production process based on green hydrogen and intermittent renewable energy sources. Ru/LaScSi and Ru/CeTiGe are investigated with an approach combining DFT calculations and 15N/14N homomolecular exchange experiments. Ru/LaScSi is the most active of both catalysts. It has electride-like properties which are enhanced when partially hydrogenated leading to higher activity in nitrogen equilibration reaction. Ru/CeTiGe, relatively active despite the absence of electride-like character, is proposed to produce NH3 following the associative mechanism with the assistance of absorbed H.

Abstract Water‐oxidation is a mechanistic bottleneck in artificial photosynthesis that is critical for achieving sustainable energy‐to‐fuel conversion. Grafting molecular water‐oxidation catalyst assemblies on the surface of a polymer can engender better stability and higher efficiency. Herein, we present a hybrid construct which consists of a molecular single‐site RuCat1 encapsulated into a UV cross‐linked polymer assembly on an F‐doped tin oxide (FTO). Incorporation of high‐density surface‐binding sites (COO− groups) resulted in a high surface loading of the RuCat1 and surface stability as shown from ATR‐FTIR, UV‐vis and cyclic voltammetry data. Furthermore, we found that the grafted RuCat1 into the polymer brush layers promotes pH‐dependent electrocatalytic water‐oxidation with a turnover frequency of 0.45 s−1 and an estimated 88 % faradaic efficiency during control potential electrolysis at pH 8.5. The general applicability of this approach is illustrated by screening a series of molecular single‐site catalysts which points to the importance of electrostatic interactions as well as hydrogen bonding in the functionalization of the electrode.

Hydrogen has emerged as an important candidate for clean energy, owing to its environmentally friendly advantages. Electrolytic hydrogen production stands out as the most promising technology for hydrogen production. Therefore, the design of highly efficient electrocatalysts is significant to drive the application of hydrogen technologies. Platinum (Pt)-based catalysts are famous for their outstanding performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the expensive cost limits its wide application. Ruthenium (Ru)-based catalysts have received extensive attention due to their relatively lower cost and HER performance similar to that of Pt. Nevertheless, the performance of Ru-based catalysts is still unable to meet industrial demands. Therefore, improving HER performance through the modification of Ru-based catalysts remains significant. In this review, the reaction mechanism of HER is analyzed and the latest research progress in the modification of Ru-based electrocatalysts is summarized. From the reaction mechanism perspective, addressing the adsorption of intermediates on the Ru-based electrocatalyst surface, the adsorption–activation of interface water molecules, and the behavior of interface water molecules and proposing solutions to enhance performance of Ru-based electrocatalyst are the main findings, ultimately contributing to promoting their application in the field of electrocatalysis.

The molecular complexes of Re(4,4′-dcbpy)(CO)3Cl (dcbpy = dicarboxylicacid-2,2’-bipyridyl) and [Ru(dcbpy)3]2+ are co-assembled into UiO-66 scaffolds as structural imperfects for CO2 photocatalytic reduction (named as Re-Ru@U). The prepared catalysts are characterized by XRD, Fourier-Transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms. The intact structure of molecular complexes within the matrix are monitored by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra through a totally digesting catalyst. The optical properties are studied via absorption and photoluminescence spectra, and the single-electron reduction in Re and Ru complexes is detected by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra. An excellent photocatalytic performance is obtained with steady and sustained CO evolution and a turnover number (TON) value of 15 (11 h). The CO activity irradiating by single wavelength presents the absorption-intensity-dependent changing tendency, where the absorption intensity is superposed by Re and Ru complexes. The two radicals related to Re and Ru, respectively, are simultaneously detected in the Re-Ru@U catalyst. It is suggested that the ReC2 component serves as both a photosensitizer and a catalyst, and the RuC2 component works as an additional photosensitizer to supply the second electron for CO2 reduction. The co-assembling of dual metals Re and Ru in the matrix promotes the electron transfer from the reductive Ru centres to one-electron-reduced Re centres and accounts for the superior activity of CO evolution. Our results demonstrate a strategy to develop the multimetallic catalysts via facile assembling into MOF scaffolds to promote photocatalytic performance.

CO2 methanation offers a promising route for converting CO2 into valuable chemicals and energy fuels at the same time as hydrogen is stored in methane, so the development of suitable catalysts is crucial. In this review, the performance of catalysts for CO2 methanation is presented and discussed, including noble metal-based catalysts and non-noble metal-based catalysts. Among the noble metal-based catalysts (Ru, Rh, and Pd), Ru-based catalysts show the best catalytic performance. In the non-noble metal catalysts, Ni-based catalysts are the best among Ni-, Co-, and Fe-based catalysts. The factors predominantly affecting catalytic performance are the dispersion of the active metal; the synergy of the active metal with support; and the addition of dopants. Further comprehensive investigations into (i) catalytic performance under industrial conditions, (ii) stability over a much longer period and (iii) activity enhancement at low reaction temperatures are anticipated to meet the industrial applications of CO2 methanation.

Fatty alcohols are important products in the chemical industry, given that they are frequently used in the formulation of surfactants and lubricants. In this context, this work describes a catalytic heterogeneous approach for the production of 1-octadecanol (C18OH) from ethyl stearate (ES) using nanosized Ru-supported on tungstated zirconia (W/Zr). The activity and selectivity of this series of catalysts have been studied during the hydrogenation of ES in a batch reactor at 175 °C and PH2 = 40 bar. The so-prepared catalysts were characterized by a sort of characterization techniques (i.e., X-ray diffraction, H2-TPR, etc.), confirming the high dispersion and higher reducibility of Ru nanoparticles on the W/Zr surface (primarily tetragonal zirconia) with respect to pure zirconia. Overall, the catalysts were significantly active. In addition, a strong synergistic effect was revealed between Ru and W species, according to catalytic data. Finally, the reaction sequence towards fatty alcohol has also been elucidated, pointing to the ester hydrogenolysis to the aldehyde and ulterior hydrogenation of the latter as the main route for fatty alcohol formation.

Ru nanoparticles doped and supported by Mo oxide (Ru/Mo oxide NPs) were synthesized via an in situ co-precipitation strategy for hydrogen production via hydrolysis of ammonia borane (AB). The optimized Ru0.9Mo0.1 catalyst composition exhibited a total turnover frequency (TOF) value of 514.8 molH2 (molRu0.9Mo0.1)−1 min−1 at room temperature. Systematic characterization of the catalysts unveiled the dual role of Mo oxide in regulating the structure and catalytic performance of Ru NPs. This work provides a new approach for the design of Ru-based nanocatalysts toward hydrolysis of AB for H2 harvest.

Venomous snake bite adversely affects millions of people yearly, but few animal models allow for the determination of toxicodynamic timelines with hemotoxic venoms to characterize the onset and severity of coagulopathy or assess novel, site-directed antivenom strategies. Thus, the goals of this investigation were to create a rabbit model of subcutaneous envenomation to assess venom toxicodynamics and efficacy of ruthenium-based antivenom administration. New Zealand White rabbits were sedated with midazolam via the ear vein and had viscoelastic measurements of whole blood and/or plasmatic coagulation kinetics obtained from ear artery samples. Venoms derived from Crotalus scutulatus scutulatus, Bothrops moojeni, or Calloselasma rhodostoma were injected subcutaneously, and changes in coagulation were determined over three hours and compared to samples obtained prior to envenomation. Other rabbits had ruthenium-based antivenoms injected five minutes after venom injection. Viscoelastic analyses demonstrated diverse toxicodynamic patterns of coagulopathy consistent with the molecular composition of the proteomes of the venoms tested. The antivenoms tested attenuated venom-mediated coagulopathy. A novel rabbit model can be used to characterize the onset and severity of envenomation by diverse proteomes and to assess site-directed antivenoms. Future investigation is planned involving other medically important venoms and antivenom development.

Two ruthenium nitrosyl complexes of Na[RuNOCl4L] with nitronyl nitroxide radicals coordinated to ruthenium with N-donor pyridine rings were prepared and described. The crystal structure of both complexes is 1D or 2D polymeric, due to the additional coordination of sodium cation by bridging the chloride ligands or oxygen atoms of nitroxides. Partially, the oligomeric forms remain in the solutions of the complexes in acetonitrile. The magnetic measurements in the solid state demonstrate the presence of antiferromagnetic interactions through the exchange channels, with the distance between paramagnetic centers equal to 3.1–3.9 Å. The electrochemical behavior of the prepared complexes was investigated in acetonitrile solutions.

Operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) is combined with online mass spectrometry (MS) to help to resolve a long-standing debate concerning the active phase of RuO2 supported on rutile TiO2 (RuO2@TiO2) during the CO oxidation reaction. DRIFTS has been demonstrated to serve as a versatile probe molecule to elucidate the active phase of RuO2@TiO2 under various reaction conditions. Fully oxidized and fully reduced catalysts serve to provide reference DRIFT spectra, based on which the operando CO spectra acquired during CO oxidation under various reaction conditions are interpreted. Partially reduced RuO2@TiO2 was identified as the most active catalyst in the CO oxidation reaction. This is independent of the reaction conditions being reducing or oxidizing and whether the starting catalyst is the fully oxidized RuO2@TiO2 or the partially reduced RuO2@TiO2.

Ruthenium-catalyzed cross metathesis using biseugenol (1) with electron-deficient olefins methyl (2a) and ethyl (2b) acrylates, acrylic acid (2c), acrylonitrile (2d), and methyl methacrylate (2e) derivatives have been conducted to afford respective derivatives 3a–3e with good yields and excellent conversion rates. Activity of prepared compounds against trypomastigote and amastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi and mammalian cytotoxicity have been evaluated. The results obtained indicate that the IC50 values for amastigotes of compounds 3b and 3d are quite similar to those of biseugenol (1), but unlike this compound, they show reduced toxicities with SI values similar to those of the standard drug benznidazol.

Ruthenium complexes are an important class that has multiple catalytic and biological applications. Ruthenium has a remarkably broad and diversified chemical spectrum. In the emerging fields of catalysis, such as homogeneous, heterogeneous, and photo catalysis, ruthenium complexes are being studied. Moreover, Ruthenium complexes can be used in the development of efficient chemotherapeutic drugs for cancer, even though some of them are in the final stage of clinical trials. This review covers the synthesis of the pincer, Shiff base, phosphine, N-heterocyclic carbenes, cycloruthenated, and half sandwiched ruthenium complexes and their potential catalytic and biological applications reported in the last 15 years.

The production of sorbitol from biomass, and especially from its cellulosic component, has been studied as a sustainable method for producing platform molecules. Because it requires two steps, namely, hydrolysis and hydrogenation, bifunctional materials are required as catalysts for this transformation. This study reports a bifunctional catalyst composed of sulfonic functions grafted onto a carbon support for the hydrolysis step and RuO2 nanoparticles for the hydrogenation step. As sulfur can easily poison Ru, synthetic optimization is necessary to obtain an efficient bifunctional catalyst that surpasses a mere Ru/C catalyst. Kinetic studies highlight the better activity of the bifunctional catalysts compared to the reference monofunctional catalysts. Besides being active in hydrolysis reactions, sulfonic functions also have a role in avoiding the degradation of the sorbitol produced. The recyclability of the bifunctional catalyst is also superior to that of the monofunctional one.

A series of ruthenium nanoparticles (RuNPs) were synthesized by the organometallic approach in different functionalized imidazolium ionic liquids (FILs). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed well-dispersed and narrow-sized RuNPs ranging from 1.3 to 2.2 nm, depending on the IL functionalization. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) allowed the interaction between the RuNPs and the ILs to be studied. The RuNPs stabilized by methoxy-based FILs (MEM and MME) displayed a good balance between catalytic activity and stability when evaluated in the hydrogenation of styrene (S) under mild reaction conditions. Moreover, the catalysts showed total selectivity towards ethylbenzene (EB) under milder reaction conditions (5 bar, 30 °C) than reported in the literature for other RuNP catalysts.

Abstract The new phase Be3Ru crystallizes with TiCu3‐type structure (space group Pmmn (59), a=3.7062(1) Å, b=4.5353(1) Å, c=4.4170(1) Å), a coloring variant of the hexagonal closest packing (hcp) of spheres. The electronic structure revealed that Be3Ru has a pseudo‐gap close to the Fermi level. A strong charge transfer from Be to Ru was observed from the analysis of electron density within the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) framework and polar three‐ and four‐atomic Be−Ru bonds were observed from the ELI−D (electron localizability indicator) analysis. This situation is very similar to the recently investigated Be5Pt and Be21Pt5 compounds. The unusual crystal chemical feature of Be3Ru is that different charged species belong to the same closest packing, contrary to typical inorganic compounds, where the cationic components are located in the voids of the closest packing formed by anions. Be3Ru is a diamagnet displaying metallic electrical resistivity.

Sodium-promoted monoclinic zirconia supported ruthenium catalysts were tested for CO2 hydrogenation at 20 bar and a H2:CO2 ratio of 3:1. Although increasing sodium promotion, from 2.5% to 5% by weight, slightly decreased CO2 conversion (14% to 10%), it doubled the selectivity to both CO (~36% to ~71%) and chain growth products (~4% to ~8%) remarkably and reduced the methane selectivity by two-thirds (~60% to ~21%). For CO2 hydrogenation during in situ DRIFTS under atmospheric pressure, it was revealed that Na increases the catalyst basicity and suppresses the reactivity of Ru sites. Higher basicity facilitates CO2 adsorption, weakens the C–H bond of the formate intermediate promoting CO formation, and inhibits methanation occurring on ruthenium nanoparticle surfaces. The suppression of excessive hydrogenation increases the chain growth probability. Decelerated reduction during H2-TPR/TPR-MS and H2-TPR-EXAFS/XANES at the K-edge of ruthenium indicates that sodium is in contact with ruthenium. A comparison of the XANES spectra of unpromoted and Na-promoted catalysts after H2 reduction showed no evidence of a promoting effect involving electron charge transfer.

Protic ruthenium complexes using the dihydroxybipyridine (dhbp) ligand combined with a spectator ligand (N,N = bpy, phen, dop, Bphen) have been studied for their potential activity vs. cancer cells and their photophysical luminescent properties. These complexes vary in the extent of π expansion and the use of proximal (6,6′-dhbp) or distal (4,4′-dhbp) hydroxy groups. Eight complexes are studied herein as the acidic (OH bearing) form, [(N,N)2Ru(n,n′-dhbp)]Cl2, or as the doubly deprotonated (O− bearing) form. Thus, the presence of these two protonation states gives 16 complexes that have been isolated and studied. Complex 7A, [(dop)2Ru(4,4′-dhbp)]Cl2, has been recently synthesized and characterized spectroscopically and by X-ray crystallography. The deprotonated forms of three complexes are also reported herein for the first time. The other complexes studied have been synthesized previously. Three complexes are light-activated and exhibit photocytotoxicity. The log(Do/w) values of the complexes are used herein to correlate photocytotoxicity with improved cellular uptake. For Ru complexes 1–4 bearing the 6,6′-dhbp ligand, photoluminescence studies (all in deaerated acetonitrile) have revealed that steric strain leads to photodissociation which tends to reduce photoluminescent lifetimes and quantum yields in both protonation states. For Ru complexes 5–8 bearing the 4,4′-dhbp ligand, the deprotonated Ru complexes (5B–8B) have low photoluminescent lifetimes and quantum yields due to quenching that is proposed to involve the 3LLCT excited state and charge transfer from the [O2-bpy]2− ligand to the N,N spectator ligand. The protonated OH bearing 4,4′-dhbp Ru complexes (5A–8A) have long luminescence lifetimes which increase with increasing π expansion on the N,N spectator ligand. The Bphen complex, 8A, has the longest lifetime of the series at 3.45 μs and a photoluminescence quantum yield of 18.7%. This Ru complex also exhibits the best photocytotoxicity of the series. A long luminescence lifetime is correlated with greater singlet oxygen quantum yields because the triplet excited state is presumably long-lived enough to interact with 3O2 to yield 1O2.

Many areas of electronics, engineering and manufacturing rely on ferromagnetic materials, including iron, nickel and cobalt. Very few other materials have an innate magnetic moment rather than induced magnetic properties, which are more common. However, in a previous study of ruthenium nanoparticles, the smallest nano-dots showed significant magnetic moments. Furthermore, ruthenium nanoparticles with a face-centred cubic (fcc) packing structure exhibit high catalytic activity towards several reactions and such catalysts are of special interest for the electrocatalytic production of hydrogen. Previous calculations have shown that the energy per atom resembles that of the bulk energy per atom when the surface-to-bulk ratio < 1, but in its smallest form, nano-dots exhibit a range of other properties. Therefore, in this study, we have carried out calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) with long-range dispersion corrections DFT-D3 and DFT-D3-(BJ) to systematically investigate the magnetic moments of two different morphologies and various sizes of Ru nano-dots in the fcc phase. To confirm the results obtained by the plane-wave DFT methodologies, additional atom-centred DFT calculations were carried out on the smallest nano-dots to establish accurate spin-splitting energetics. Surprisingly, we found that in most cases, the high spin electronic structures had the most favourable energies and were hence the most stable.

The catalytic transformation of sugars into lactic acid has shown great potential for the scalable utilization of renewable biomass. Herein, RuOx/MoS2 catalysts were synthesized with the assistance of CaO for the one-pot conversion of glucose to lactic acid. Under the reaction conditions of 120 °C and 1 MPa O2, a 96.6% glucose conversion and a 54.3% lactic acid selectivity were realized in the one-pot catalytic reaction, with relatively high stability after four successive cycles. This catalytic system was also effective for the conversion of many other carbohydrate substrates, such as fructose, xylose and cellulose (selectivity 68.9%, 78.2% and 50.6%, respectively). According to catalyst characterizations and conditional experiments, the highly dispersed RuOx species on the surface of MoS2, together with OH−, promoted isomerization, retro-aldol condensation, dehydration and hydration reactions, resulting in a relatively high lactic acid yield for sugar conversions.

The modification of fatty substrates using heterogeneous catalysts have extensive industrial application and has an emphatic position in a sustainable context. Herein ruthenium, nickel, cobalt and copper-doped ruthenium, supported on hypercrosslinked polystyrene (HPS) catalysts were prepared by wet impregnation, characterized and applied on the modification of canola fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). The characterization showed a dispersive effect of doping metals over the ruthenium particles, the presence of acid sites and overall surface morphology, which allows targeting potential applications. The chosen modifications consisted of hydrogenation, hydroformylation, oxidative cleavage and deoxygenation, resulting in superb catalytic activities of over 99% conversions for hydrogenation and deoxygenation. The simplicity of the canola FAME composition allows the understanding of the catalytic processes and allows the upscale of more complex FAME matrixes. Finally, the obtained data stimulates further optimization studies for each application with a variation on the catalysts and the usage of residual fatty substrates, greatly enhancing the sustainability profile of the systems.

Oxygenate fuels are a promising solution to urban air pollution, reducing soot emissions by big margins. Formaldehyde is a major building block for the synthesis of oxygen-rich fuels. Herein we report the synthesis, characterisation and testing of ruthenium on alumina catalysts for the methanol-mediated CO hydrogenation towards oxygenates with the formaldehyde oxidation state. We varied the synthesis parameters and could see interesting correlation between synthesis parameters, final metal loading, crystallite sizes and catalyst activity. The catalysts were tested in a high-pressure three-folded reactor plant in the CO hydrogenation in methanolic media. Interesting relationships between catalyst synthesis, structure and activity could be gained from these experiments.

Two new unsymmetrical N-heterocyclic carbene ligand (uNHC)-based ruthenium complexes featuring phenolic OH function were obtained and fully characterised. The more active one was then immobilised on the metal–organic framework (MOF) solid support (Al)MIL-101-NH2. The catalytic activity of such a heterogeneous system was tested, showing that, while the heterogeneous catalyst is less active than the corresponding homogeneous catalyst in solution, it can catalyse selected olefin metathesis reactions, serving as the proof-of-concept for the immobilisation of catalytically active complexes in MOFs using a phenolic tag.

Ruthenium complexes are remarkable catalysts for the C–H activation approaches and organic transformations. Combining a Ru-catalyst with oxidants and other additives in a one-pot process is considered a sustainable approach due to the reduction in reaction steps and the minimal usage of solvents during synthesis, work-up, isolation of chemicals, and purification of the products. This review highlights the ruthenium-catalyzed organic transformations in a one-pot manner to achieve heterocyclic backbones, including indoles, benzofurans, indazoles, pyrans, pyrimidines, quinolines, and isoquinolines.

Ruthenium(II) complexes with N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have recently attracted attention as novel chemotherapeutic agents. The complex HB324 was intensively studied as an apoptosis-inducing compound in resistant cell lines. HB324 induced apoptosis via mitochondrial pathways. Of particular interest is the upregulation of the Harakiri resistance protein, which inhibits the anti-apoptotic and death repressor proteins Bcl-2 (B-cell lymphoma 2) and BCL-xL (B-cell lymphoma-extra large). Moreover, HB324 showed synergistic activity with various established anticancer drugs and overcame resistance in several cell lines, such as neuroblastoma cells. In conclusion, HB324 showed promising potential as a novel anticancer agent in vitro, suggesting further investigations on this and other preclinical ruthenium drug candidates.

A novel strategy was adopted to fabricate pH-universal Ru-based electrocatalysts. Due to the synergistic effect of the ultra-small size of Ru nanoclusters and defective CNTs with oxygen-containing groups, the Ru nanoclusters directly grown on defective carbon (O-Ru NCs/CNTs) catalysts exhibited superior hydrogen evolution activity in the whole pH window. An overpotential of only 37, 13, and 50 mV was needed to reach 10 mA cm−2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, 1.0 M KOH and 1.0 M PBS, respectively. Moreover, this catalyst has shown higher stability. This work is important for the potential application of Ru-based electrocatalysts for hydrogen production.

We demonstrate a method for the synthesis of a water-soluble multimetallic peptidic array containing a predetermined sequence of metal centers such as Ru(II), Pt(II), and Rh(III). The compound, named as a water-soluble metal-organic complex array (WSMOCA), is obtained through 1) the conventional solution-chemistry-based preparation of the corresponding metal complex monomers having a 9-fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl (Fmoc)-protected amino acid moiety and 2) their sequential coupling together with other water-soluble organic building units on the surface-functionalized polymeric resin by following the procedures originally developed for the solid-phase synthesis of polypeptides, with proper modifications. Traces of reactions determined by mass spectrometric analysis at the representative coupling steps in stage 2 confirm the selective construction of a predetermined sequence of metal centers along with the peptide backbone. The WSMOCA cleaved from the resin at the end of stage 2 has a certain level of solubility in aqueous media dependent on the pH value and/or salt content, which is useful for the purification of the compound.

This article provides information on one of the most interesting elements in the D.I. Mendeleev Periodic Table - ruthenium, discovered 175 years ago by the outstanding Russian chemist Karl Karlovich Klaus. Its most important physical properties, a variety of oxidation states, and a tendency to form countless compounds have been noted, mocking it unique and indispensable in all areas of science, technology, and in society. We have taken into consideration the structure of ruthenium consumption today as well as a few prospects for its future use.

A family of complexes of the type [Ru(tpbn)(IP-R)(4-pic)]Cl2 (tbpn=2,2′-(4-(tert‑butyl)pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(1,8-napthyridine); 4-pic = 4-picoline; IP-R = imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline attached to an aromatic group R for 2–8 and H for 1) were prepared as near-infrared (NIR) absorbing coordination complexes to test whether triplet intraligand excited states (3IL) of higher energy than the lowest-lying triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer excited states (3MLCT) could effectively generate cytotoxic singlet oxygen (1O2) and elicit in vitro photodynamic therapy (PDT) effects. Aromatic groups ranged from benzene to anthracene, with corresponding triplet state energies that were all significantly higher (approximately 3.7–1.8 eV) than the 3MLCT state estimated at 1.5 eV. Complexes 1–8 absorbed NIR light, with their longest-wavelength peak maxima occurring near 725 nm that extended out to 800 nm. The 1O2 quantum yields for the aromatic-containing compounds were extremely small (ΦΔ = 0.07), with correspondingly modest in vitro photocytotoxicities. All compounds were nontoxic without a light trigger, with dark EC50 values >60 µM and most values closer to 100 or greater. EC50 values with visible light were 5–6 (PI = 15–20), 7–10 (PI=8–11), and 10–15 µM (PI = 6–8) in SKMEL28, A375, and B16F10 cancer cell lines, respectively. With NIR light, these values were even less: 11–16 (PI = 5–9), 16–50 (PI = 2–6), and 15–19 µM (PI = 4–6) in SKMEL28, A375, and B16F10 cancer cell lines, respectively. While measurable, the modest activities and absence of any trend between the 3IL energies and values for ΦΔ or PI demonstrate that 3IL states with energies above the lowest-lying 3MLCT states do not contribute to the overall excited state dynamics responsible for potent PDT effects in previous studies. Lowest-lying 3MLCT states in this family of NIR-absorbing photosensitizers do not produce the requisite 1O2 for effective in vitro photocytotoxic effects, underscoring the need to install 3IL states that are lower in energy than the lowest-lying 3MLCT states in order the create potent NIR-activatable Ru(II) complexes for PDT.

Cancer is one of the leading cause of lethality worldwide, CRC being the third most common cancer reported worldwide, with 1.85 million cases and 850,000 deaths annually. As in all other cancers, kinases are one of the major enzymes that play an essential role in the incidence and progression of CRC. Thus, using multi-kinase inhibitors is one of the therapeutic strategies used to counter advanced-stage CRC. Regorafenib is an FDA-approved drug in the third-line therapy of refractory metastatic colorectal cancer. Acquired resistance to cancers and higher toxicity of these drugs are disadvantages to the patients. To counter this, combination therapy is used as a strategy where a minimal dose of drugs can be used to get a higher efficacy and reduce drug resistance development. Ruthenium-based compounds are observed to be a potential alternative to platinum-based drugs due to their significant safety and effectiveness. Formerly, our lab reported Ru-1, a ruthenium-based compound, for its anticancer activity against multiple cancer cells, such as HepG2, HCT116, and MCF7. This study evaluates Ru-1′s activity against regorafenib-resistant HCT116 cells and as a combination therapeutic with regorafenib. Meanwhile, the mechanism of the effect of Ru-1 alone and with regorafenib as a combination is still unknown. In this study, we tested a drug combination (Ru-1 and regorafenib) against a panel of HT29, HCT116, and regorafenib-resistant HCT116 cells. The combination showed a synergistic inhibitory activity. Several mechanisms underlying these numerous synergistic activities, such as anti-proliferative efficacy, indicated that the combination exhibited potent cytotoxicity and enhanced apoptosis induction. Disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential increased intracellular ROS levels and decreased migratory cell properties were observed. The combination exhibited its activity by regulating PI3K/Akt and p38 MAP kinase signalling. This indicates that the combination of REG/Ru-1 targets cancer cells by modulating the PI3K/Akt and ERK signalling.

Ruthenium, palladium and platinum fall within the group of noble metals that are widely used in catalysis, especially for the electrocatalytic production of hydrogen. The dominant phase of the bulk Ru metal is hexagonal close-packed (hcp), which has been studied extensively. However, significantly less attention has been paid to the face-centred cubic (fcc) phases, which have been observed in nanoparticles. In this study, we have carried out density functional theory calculations with long-range dispersion corrections [DFT-D2, DFT-D3 and DFT-D3-(BJ)] to investigate the lattice parameters, surface energies and work functions of the (001), (011) and (111) surfaces of Ru, Pd and Pt in the fcc phase. When investigating the surface properties of the three metals, we observed that the DFT-D2 method generally underestimated the lattice parameters by up to 2.2% for Pt and 2.8% for Ru. The surface energies followed the observed trend (111) < (001) < (011) for both Ru and Pd with all three methods, which is comparable to experimental data. For Pt the same trend was observed with DFT-D2 and DFT-D3(BJ), but it deviated to Pt (111) < Pt (011) < Pt (001) for the DFT-D3 method. DFT-D2 overestimated the surface energies for all three Miller Indexes by 82%, 73%, and 60%, when compared to experimental values. The best correlation for the surface energies was obtained with the DFT-D3 and DFT-D3(BJ) methods, both of which have deviate by less than 15% deviation for all surfaces with respect to experiment. The work function followed the trend of Φ (111) < Φ (001) < Φ (011) for all three metals and calculated by all three methods. Five different types of Ru, Pd and Pt nanoparticles were considered, including icosahedral, decahedral, cuboctahedral, cubic and spherical particles of different sizes. The bulk, surface and nanoparticle calculations showed that the DFT-D2 method for Pt overestimated the exchange-correlation, leading to higher energy values that can be contributed erroneously to a more stable structure. The calculations showed that as soon as the surface-to-bulk ratio > 1, the energy per atom resembles bulk energy values.

Designing an economically viable catalyst that maintains high catalytic activity and stability is the key to unlock dry reforming of methane (DRM) as a primary strategy for biogas valorization. Ni/Al2O3 catalysts have been widely used for this purpose; however, several modifications have been reported in the last years in order to prevent coke deposition and deactivation of the samples. Modification of the acidity of the support and the addition of noble metal promoters are between the most reported strategies. Nevertheless, in the task of designing an active and stable catalyst for DRM, the selection of an appropriate noble metal promoter is turning more challenging owing to the lack of homogeneity of the different studies. Therefore, this research aims to compare Ru (0.50 and 2.0%) and Re (0.50 and 2.0%) as noble metal promoters for a Ni/MgAl2O4 catalyst under the same synthesis and reaction conditions. Catalysts were characterized by XRF, BET, XRD, TPR, hydrogen chemisorption (H2-TPD), and dry reforming reaction tests. Results show that both promoters increase Ni reducibility and dispersion. However, Ru seems a better promoter for DRM since 0.50% of Ru increases the catalytic activity in 10% and leads to less coke deposition.

New ruthenium olefin metathesis catalysts containing N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) connected by a linker tether to a benzylidene ligand were studied. Such obtained self-chelated Hoveyda–Grubbs type complexes existed in the form of an organometallic polymer but could still catalyze olefin metathesis after being dissolved in an organic solvent. Although these polymeric catalysts exhibited a slightly lower activity compared to structurally related nonpolymeric catalysts, they were successfully used in a number of ring-closing metathesis reactions leading to a variety of heterocyclic compounds, including biologically and pharmacologically related analogues of cathepsin K inhibitor and sildenafil (Viagra™). In the last case, a good solubility of a polymeric catalyst in toluene allowed the separation of the product from the catalyst via simple filtration.

The [Ru(PPh3)2Cl-piperidine(4-aminomethyl)] complex (mono-Ru) was synthesized from [Ru(PPh3)3Cl2] and 4-(aminomethyl)piperidine, whereas the [(PPh3)PdCl(Shiff-pip)] complex (mono-Pd) was obtained by reacting [Pd(PPh3)2Cl2] with its respective Schiff base ligand, both at a 1:1 molar ratio. The heterobimetallic [RuCl2(PPh3)2](μ-Schiff)Pd(PPh3)Cl] complex (Ru/Pd) was synthesized via a one-pot, three-component reaction of mono-Ru, [(Pd(PPh3)2Cl2] and salicylaldehyde. All complexes were fully characterized by FTIR, UV-Vis, and NMR spectroscopy, as well as elemental analysis, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, cyclic voltammetry, and computational studies. Ru/Pd was able to polymerize norbornene (NBE) by two different mechanisms: ROMP and vinyl polymerization. The Ru fragment was active for ROMP of NBE, reaching yields of 68 and 31% for mono-Ru and Ru/Pd, respectively, when the [NBE]/[Ru] = 3000 molar ratio and 5 μL EDA addition were employed at 50 °C. The poly(norbornene) (polyNBE) obtained presented an order of magnitude of 104 g mol−1 and Ð values between 1.48 and 1.79. For the vinyl polymerization of NBE, the Pd fragment was active using MAO as a cocatalyst, reaching a yield of 47.0% for Ru/Pd and quantitative yields for mono-Pd when [Al]/[Pd] = 2500 and [NBE]/[Pd] = 20,000 molar ratios were employed, both at 60 °C.
