The prolonged start-up time and low total nitrogen removal of anammox hinder its full-scale application. Herein, application of nano-zerovalent iron and low strength magnetic field in sole and in combination to abbreviate the start-up period and long-term process stability of anammox was carried out. The reactor’s anammox start-up with the only magnetic field (R3) was 34 days, saving 43.3% time compared with the control. The increase of nitrogen removal efficiency over the control was 43.7% during the start-up period. However, the reactor with the coupled treatment of nano-zerovalent iron and magnetic field (R4) was more stable with higher nitrogen removal efficiency (80%) at high nitrogen loading (5.28 kg/m3/d). Anammox gene copy number in R4 was highest after 180 days of culture, followed by nano-zerovalent iron (R2) and R3 reactor. The functional genes of denitrifying bacteria (nirK and nirS) were also identified in all reactors with higher copy numbers in R2, followed by R4 and R3. Furthermore, high throughput analysis showed that the Thauera performing partial denitrification, Ignavibacterium performing dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium or nitrite were also present in all reactors, more abundant in R4, confirming that the higher nitrogen removal efficiency in R4 was attributed to the synergistic relationship of other nitrogenous genera with anammox. The higher abundance of PD and DNRA in the reactor with the coupled treatment of nano-zero valent iron and magnetic field, achieved in this research, opens the opportunity of complete nitrogen removal via synergistic partial-denitrification, anammox, and DNRA (SPDAD) process.

Its ingredients are also considered helpful for cancer rehabilitation. Here, we will explore the regulatory mechanism of BXXX acting on PD-L1 in gastric cancer (GC).Methods: GC samples and the general baseline data of the patients were collated. Immunohistochemical (IHC) detected the expression of programmed cell death-ligand 1(PD-L1), hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), interferon-γ receptor (IFNGR) and Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). ELISA detected the expressions of EGF, IFNG and IL-6 in serum samples. Network tools were used to analyze the potential molecules of BXXX. In the cell experiment, CCK-8 detected the cell proliferation. Tunel detected the apoptosis. Western blot detected the expression of related proteins. In animal experiments, the tumor volume of GC-bearing mice was observed. Expression of EGF, IFNG and IL-6 in the serum of tumor-bearing GC mice were detected by ELISA. Western blot detected the expression of related proteins.Results: The expressions of PD-L1, HIF-1, EGFR, IFNGR and TLR4 in the tissues of GC patients were significantly increased, and the expressions of EGF, IFNG and IL-6 in serum were increased. The molecular results of the network tools showed that BXXX and its main components have a targeting effect on the key molecules of each pathway in the PD-L1 regulatory network. Cell experiments showed that BXXX can inhibit the expression of PD-L1, HIF-1, EGFR and TLR4, but has no significant effect on the expression of IFNGR, thus inhibiting the proliferation and promoting the apoptosis of GC cells. The results were consistent with the animal experiments on tumor-bearing gastric cancer mice.Conclusion: BXXX inhibited the expression of PD-L1 through multi-target and multi-pathway regulation of major oncogenes in GC, thus effect cell proliferation and apoptosis.Keywords: banxia xiexin decoction, gastric cancer, PD-L1, multi-target and multi-pathway

This work proposes an approach to fabricate flexible transparent ultraviolet (UV)-shielding membrane by casting method, which uniformly disperses pristine zinc oxide nanoparticles (NPs) in low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The critical conditions for film fabrication, such as casting temperature, LDPE concentration in the solution, dissolution time, NP concentration, and post hot press cooling processes, are systematically studied. It is found that the casting temperature needs to be close to the melting temperature of LDPE, namely, 115°C, so that transparent film formation without cracks can be guaranteed. NP agglomerates are suppressed if the polymer concentration is controlled below 6%. For good dispersion of NPs, LDPE has to be swelled or unentangled enough in the solution (close to 200 h dissolution time), and then the NP agglomerates can be diminished due to the diffusion of the NPs into the polymer gel (322 h dissolution time). When the NPs are well-dispersed in the LDPE film, the film can completely shield UV light while allowing high transmissivity for the visible light. As the concentration of NPs in the film increases from 4 to 6%, the transmissivity of the film decreases, the tensile strength increases, and the tensile failure strain decreases.

Rapid developments in the electric industry have promoted an increasing demand for lithium resources. Lithium in salt lake brines has emerged as the main source for industrial lithium extraction, owing to its low cost and extensive reserves. The effective separation of Mg2+ and Li+ is critical to achieving high recovery efficiency and purity of the final lithium product. This paper summarizes Mg2+/Li+ separation materials and methods in the field of lithium recovery from salt lake brines. The review begins with an introduction to the global distribution and demand for lithium resources, followed by a description of the materials used in various separation techniques, including precipitation, adsorption, solvent extraction, nanofiltration membrane, electrodialysis, and electrochemical methods. A comparison, analysis, and outlook of such methods are comprehensively discussed in terms of principles, mechanisms, synthesis/operation, development, and industrial applications. We conclude with a presentation of challenges and insights into the future directions of lithium extraction from salt lake brines. A combination of the advantages of various materials is the most logical step toward developing novel methods for extracting lithium from brines with high separation selectivity, stability, low cost, and environmentally friendly characteristics.

Micro-nano structure regulation of polyaniline and impedance-matching design of its composites are two crucial but challenging works in microwave absorption. In this study, an in situ sacrificial templates polymerization is applied to regulate the porous structures of polyaniline decorated on vapor-grown carbon fiber (VGCF). By manipulating porous polyaniline structures, heterogeneous interfaces, polarization centers, and geometric structures are introduced into porous VGCF@polyaniline nanohybrids. Porous VGCF@polyaniline demonstrated robust microwave absorption ability with a minimum reflection loss of − 55.9 dB at 10.3 GHz with a filler loading of 18 wt% and a thinner thickness of 1.33 mm. The investigation of the novel porous polyaniline structures and composition relationship suggest that the microwave absorption ability of porous VGCF@polyaniline is originated from the optimal impedance-matching ratio, enhanced dielectric loss, and synergistic effect, which is enhanced by conductive loss and interfacial polarization. A universal approach was proposed to address the critical issue of hybridizing porous VGCF@polyaniline with flexible polyurethane sponge as practical electromagnetic absorption structures. The hybrids exhibited interesting dual absorption properties with minimum reflection loss of − 28.8 and − 35.5 dB at frequencies of 8.5 and 8.7 GHz, respectively. This study provides a new approach for designing lightweight and practical microwave absorbers.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been investigated as novel regulatory molecules involved in diverse biological processes. Our previous study demonstrated that lncRNA-ES3 is associated with the high glucose-induced calcification/senescence of human aortic vascular smooth muscle cells (HA-VSMCs). However, the mechanism of lncRNA-ES3 in vascular calcification/aging remained largely unknown. Here, we report that the expression of basic helix-loop-helix family member e40 (Bhlhe40) was decreased significantly in HA-VSMCs treated with high glucose, whereas the expression of basic leucine zipper transcription factor (BATF) was increased. Overexpression of Bhlhe40 and inhibition of BATF alleviated calcification/senescence of HA-VSMCs, as confirmed by Alizarin Red S staining and the presence of senescence-associated β-galactosidase-positive cells. Moreover, we identified that Bhlhe40 regulates lncRNA-ES3 in HA-VSMCs by binding to the promoter region of the lncRNA-ES3 gene (LINC00458). Upregulation or inhibition of lncRNA-ES3 expression significantly promoted or reduced calcification/senescence of HA-VSMCs, respectively. Additionally, we identified that lncRNA-ES3 functions in this process by suppressing the expression of miR-95-5p, miR-6776-5p, miR-3620-5p, and miR-4747-5p. The results demonstrate that lncRNA-ES3 triggers gene silencing of multiple miRNAs by binding to Bhlhe40, leading to calcification/senescence of VSMCs. Our findings suggest that pharmacological interventions targeting lncRNA-ES3 may be therapeutically beneficial in ameliorating vascular calcification/aging.

Objective Cardiovascular diseases and vascular aging are common in patients with diabetes. High glucose is a major cause of vascular aging and cardiovascular diseases. Premature senescence of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) is one of the main contributors to vascular aging. Adiponectin has been demonstrated to have an anti‐aging effect. The present study explored the mechanisms by which adiponectin protects VSMCs against high‐glucose‐induced senescence. Methods Senescence‐associated β‐galactosidase (SA‐β‐gal) staining was used to detect senescence cells. Western blot was used for measuring protein levels. Flow cytometry was carried out to detect the cell cycle and telomeric repeat amplification protocol (TRAP)–polymerase chain reaction (PCR) silver staining was selected to measure the telomerase activity. Results Premature senescence of VSMCs was induced by high glucose (30 mM) in a time‐dependent manner, which was verified by an increased number of senescence cells, p21 and p53 expression, as well as the decreased proliferation index. High glucose reduced telomerase activity of VSMCs via inhibition of the AMPK/TSC2/mTOR/S6K1 pathway and activation of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR/S6K1 pathway, while adiponectin treatment significantly increased telomerase activity of VSMCs through activation of AMPK/TSC2/mTOR/S6K1 signaling and inhibition of PI3K/Akt/mTOR/S6K1 signaling. Conclusion Adiponectin attenuated the high‐glucose‐induced premature senescence of VSMCs via increasing telomerase activity of VSMCs, which was achieved by activation of AMPK/TSC2/mTOR/S6K1 signaling and inhibition of PI3K/Akt/mTOR/S6K1 signaling.

In this work, gold and bismuth bimetallic nanoparticles decorated L-cysteine functionalized graphene oxide nanocomposites (Au-BiNPs/SH-GO) were prepared and applied to selective detection of Fe(III) in lake and seawater samples by modifying onto glassy carbon electrodes. Bimetallic nanoparticles have various excellent properties and better catalytic properties because of the unique synergistic effect between metals. The modified electrode was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Under optimized conditions, current peak intensity increased linearly with increasing Fe(III) concentration over the range of 0.2–50 μM and a detection limit of 0.07 μM (S/N = 3). The Au-BiNPs/SH-GO/GCE was used for the determination of Fe(III) in lake and seawater samples with recoveries ranged from 90 to 103%. Those satisfactory results revealed the potential application of the Au-BiNPs/SH-GO electrochemical sensor for heavy metals detection in environmental monitoring.

Vascular calcification/aging is a crucial feature of diabetic macro vasculopathy, resulting in serious cardiovascular diseases. The calcification/senescence of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) induced by hyperglycemia can cause diabetic vascular calcification/aging. However, the mechanism of VSMCs calcification/senescence involved in diabetic vascular calcification/aging remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine how the high glucose (HG) information in circulating blood is transmitted from vascular endothelial cells (ECs) to VSMCs, which are not contacted with blood directly. Exosomes have attracted much attention for their vital roles in regulating cell-to-cell communication. In this study, we found that milk fat globule epidermal growth factor 8 (MFGE8) was enriched in high glucose induced human umbilical vein endothelial cell exosomes (HG-HUVEC-Exo) and regulate VSMCs calcification/senescence, characterized by up-regulated expressions of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2), as well as the increased mineralized nodules and senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SA-β-gal) positive cells. Upstream mechanism studies showed that sirtuin1 (SIRT1) was involved in VSMCs calcification/senescence by affecting the expression of MFGE8. We also found that inflammatory response mediated by IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 was closely associated with MFGE8 and played a key role in regulating HG-HUVEC-Exo-induced VSMCs calcification/senescence. These findings provide a new insight into the mechanism of exosomal MFGE8 as a potential preventive and therapeutic target for the intervention of diabetic vascular calcification/aging.

Gelatin production is the most industry polluting process where huge amounts of raw organic materials and chemicals (HCl, NaOH, Ca2+) are utilized in the manufacturing accompanied by voluminous quantities of end-pipe effluent. The gelatinous wastewater (GWW) contains a large fraction of protein and lipids with biodegradability (BOD/COD ratio) exceeding 0.6. Thus, it represents a promising low-cost substrate for the generation of biofuels, i.e., H2 and CH4, by the anaerobic digestion process. This review comprehensively describes the anaerobic technologies employed for simultaneous treatment and energy recovery from GWW. The emphasis was afforded on factors affecting the biofuels productivity from anaerobic digestion of GWW, i.e., protein concentration, organic loading rate (OLR), hydraulic retention time (HRT), the substrate to inoculum (S0/X0) ratio, type of mixed culture anaerobes, carbohydrates concentration, volatile fatty acids (VFAs), ammonia and alkalinity/VFA ratio, and reactor configurations. Economic values and future perspectives that require more attention are also outlined to facilitate further advancement and achieve practicality in this domain.

Banxia xiexin decoction (BXXX) is a classic preparation used to treat gastrointestinal diseases, and also has certain therapeutic effects on gastrointestinal tumors. BXXX has been reported to regulate the expression of proteins associated with drug resistance and sensitivity in tumors, and thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the mechanisms of BXXX drug sensitivity in gastric cancer (GC). The expression levels of programmed cell death 1 ligand 1 (PD-L1), 6-O-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) and STAT3 were immunohistochemically detected in the cancer and adjacent non-cancer tissues of patients with GC, and in vitro experimentation was conducted using drug-resistant and -sensitive GC cells. The expression levels of PD-L1, MGMT and STAT3 were determined using reverse transcription-quantitative PCR. Different concentrations of BXXX drug serum were used to treat the cells and the cellular inhibition rate was assessed using a Cell Counting Kit-8 assay. Flow cytometry was used to detect apoptosis, and western blot analysis was used to detect the expression levels of IL-6, IFN-γ, JAK/STAT3 pathway proteins, PD-L1 and MGMT. The association between PD-L1 and MGMT protein expression levels was subsequently assessed via co-immunoprecipitation. Furthermore, in vivo studies were conducted following the establishment of a drug-resistant tumor-bearing mouse model, where GC tumor size was assessed under different treatment conditions, and western blot analysis was used to detect the expression of related pathway proteins. The expression levels of PD-L1, MGMT and STAT3 were significantly increased in GC tissues, GC cells and cisplatin-resistant cells. Furthermore, BXXX inhibited the proliferation of drug-resistant cells and promoted the inhibitory effects of chemotherapeutic drugs on drug-resistant cells. BXXX also inhibited the expression levels of IL-6, IFN-γ and JAK/STAT3 pathway proteins, as well as the expression levels of PD-L1 and MGMT. Colivelin, an activator of STAT3, reversed the effects of BXXX on drug-resistant GC cells, and significantly reversed the effect of BXXX on PD-L1 expression. In conclusion, BXXX was found to influence the drug sensitivity of GC cells by regulating the expression of MGMT. This process functions viaPD-L1, which was itself mediated by IL-6/JAK/STAT3 signaling.

Stanniocalcin-1 (STC1) is a glycoprotein hormone whose abnormal expression has been reported to be associated with a variety of tumors, but its function in breast cancer is not well understood. Through modulation of STC1 expression in different breast cancer cell lines, our study found that STC1 could promote the proliferation and growth of breast cancer cells and promote metastasis. Furthermore, STC1 reduced apoptosis induction by irradiation. We also found that STC1 could promote a homologous recombination-mediated DNA damage repair by recruiting BRCA1 to sites of damage. Moreover, STC1 silencing sensitized breast cancer cells to treatment with irradiation (IR), olaparib, or cisplatin in vitro. In clinical settings, the serum concentration of STC1 was higher in breast cancer patients than in healthy women, as detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In addition, immunohistochemical staining of breast cancer specimens showed that a high expression of STC1 was negatively correlated with recurrence-free survival in breast cancer, indicating that STC1 expression could be used as a predictive marker for a poor prognosis in breast cancer. All these findings indicate that STC1 promotes breast cancer tumorigenesis and that breast cancers with a high level of STC1 are more resistant to treatment, probably through homologous recombination (HR) promotion. Furthermore, combining STC1 inhibition and DNA damage-inducing drugs may be a novel approach to improve the survival of patients with STC1-expressing breast cancer.

Suffered from rapid recombination of electrons and holes, apparent photocatalytic activity (APA) of all photocatalysts can never achieve their theoretical ultimate values. But the upper limit of practical APA is of great significance to evaluate the practical application potential of a photocatalyst. Thus, in this work, the concept of ultimate apparent photocatalytic activity (UAPA) was firstly proposed and a convenient evaluation method was first established based on the nature that EDTA-2Na can exclusively scavenge photo-excited holes, and methyl orange (MO) is mainly attacked by superoxide radical (O2-) which is produced instantly by photo-excited electrons. From a macro perspective, six popular photocatalysts were designedly selected to verify the feasibility and application scope of the proposed UAPA evaluation method. Moreover, O2- production rate and photocurrent intensity were measured by spectroscopy and spectrum analyses, and theoretical carrier concentrations were calculated by density functional theory (DFT) to further confirm the rationality and reliability of the proposed method. Positive responses of all the tests guarantee that the proposed UAPA could precisely evaluate the application potential of a photocatalyst and rank the photocatalysts according to their practical potential.

This study puts forward a new way to produce montmorillonite immobilized bimetallic nickel-iron nanoparticles by dry in-situ hydrogen reduction method in the non-liquid environment, which effectively inhibits the oxidation of iron and nickel during the synthesis process and improves the reactivity of the material. The degradation of 4-Chlorophenol (4-CP) was investigated to examine the catalytic activity of the material. The morphology and crystal properties of the montmorillonite-templated Fe/Ni bimetallic particles were explored by using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction studies, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis. Results suggest that Fe and Ni particles were homogeneously dispersed on the montmorillonite. The optimization of Ni content and reduction temperature over the degradation of 4-CP was also studied. The introduction of Ni intensely improved the degradation of 4-CP and reached over 90% when Ni content was 28.5%. The degradation rate increased significantly with the increase of reduction temperature and showed maximum activity at the reduction tempreature of 800 °C. This study offers a new method to fabricate montmorillonite immobilized Fe/Ni bimetallic nanoparticles in the non-liquid environment and the composites exhibited high degradation activity to chlorinated organic compounds.

Composite masterbatches of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) with functionalized graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were prepared by melt blending via a twin-screw extruder. The structure and morphology of composite masterbatches were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The PPS/functionalized GNPs composite fibers were then manufactured by a self-made spinning equipment via melt spinning. The oxidation resistance and other properties of PPS composite fibers were also examined. The results showed that the pure PPS fibers exhibited smooth surface, whereas the surface of PPS/functionalized GNPs composite fibers was rough. The addition of functionalized GNPs could be acted as heterogeneous nucleating agents to improve the crystallization and increase the degree of crystallinity. The retention rate of breaking strength of PPS/functionalized GNPs composite fibers could maintain up to 85% after the oxidation treatment. The improvement in the oxidation resistance of PPS/functionalized GNPs composite fibers is the results of comprehensive effects characterized by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses. The addition of functionalized GNPs could limit the damage of the C–S group and retard the generation of sulfuryl groups (–SO–) during the oxidation treatment. The chemical combination of the elements sulfur (S) and oxygen (O) could also be restricted, thus weakening the oxidation activity.

Nature employs supramolecular self-assembly to organize many molecularly complex structures. Based on this, we now report for the first time the supramolecular self-assembly of 3D lightweight nanocellulose aerogels using carboxylated ginger cellulose nanofibers and polyaniline (PANI) in a green aqueous medium. A possible supramolecular self-assembly of the 3D conductive supramolecular aerogel (SA) was provided, which also possessed mechanical flexibility, shape recovery capabilities, and a porous networked microstructure to support the conductive PANI chains. The lightweight conductive SA with hierarchically porous 3D structures (porosity of 96.90%) exhibited a high conductivity of 0.372 mS/cm and a larger area-normalized capacitance (Cs) of 59.26 mF/cm2, which is 20 times higher than other 3D chemically cross-linked nanocellulose aerogels, fast charge-discharge performance, and excellent capacitance retention. Combining the flexible SA solid electrolyte with low-cost nonwoven polypropylene and PVA/H2SO4 yielded a high normalized capacitance (Cm) of 291.01 F/g without the use of adhesive that was typically required for flexible energy storage devices. Furthermore, the supramolecular conductive aerogel could be used as a universal sensitive sensor for toxic gas, field sobriety tests, and health monitoring devices by utilizing the electrode material in lightweight supercapacitor and wearable flexible devices.

Highly aligned nonwoven vapor grown carbon fibre (VGCF) based polyurethane (PU) fibrous membrane (VGCF@PUFM) was fabricated by rotation spinning based on DMF-H2O exchange for directional microwave shielding. This VGCF@PUFM showed obviously different electrical conductivity and mechanical strength in parallel and perpendicular directions. Variational microwave shielding effectiveness (SE) could be observed by changing the rotation angles of VGCF@PUFM with vibrational direction of electromagnetic (EM) wave. There was the shielding difference more than 10 dB (above 20 dB in 0°, below 8 dB in 90°). Greater shielding effectiveness could be expected by enhancing the anisotropy of electrical conductivity of the VGCF@PUFM. In addition, oriented alignment of VGCF in fibre is promising for further improvement of the electrical conductivity in fibre direction.

Herein we present our research on generation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on cellulose nanofibers by thermal treatment and DMF as reducing agents. The cellulose (CE) nanofibers were prepared by deacetylation of electrospun cellulose acetate (CA) nanofibers which were subsequently silver coated using AgNO3 followed by thermal and DMF induced reduction processes. The samples were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and antibacterial assays. Effect of these methods on mechanical properties, thermal stabilities (DTA analysis) and swelling of the CE nanofibers were also studied. Both the processes were effective and efficient in generation of AgNPs on CE nanofibers with higher contents and very good spatial distributions. The XRD, XPS and TEM results evidenced formation metallic AgNPs. TEM images depicted the CE nanofibers highly decorated with spherical AgNPs. The DMF induced process generated AgNPs with comparatively larger sizes. The antibacterial results confirmed excellent antibacterial performance of the CEAgNPs against S. aureus and E. coli. The CEAgNP nanofibers well decorated with AgNPs having good spatial distribution and excellent antibacterial performance suggests CEAgNPs as promising candidate for efficient antimicrobial activities.

Currently available synthetic grafts demonstrate moderate success at the macrovascular level, but there are still challenges at small vascular scale (inner diameter of less than 6 mm). In this paper, silk fibroin (SF)/polyurethane (PU)/SF three-layer drug carrier nanofibrous tubes were developed for blood vessel repair with several advantages over existing designs. Our design consisted of a bionic three-layer microtube that was synthesized from the drug carrier SF and oligomeric proanthocyanidin nanofibers as the inner layer, PU nanofibers as the middle layer, and SF nanofibers as the outer layer. The results suggested that these three-layer tubes are attractive biocompatible materials for use as vascular grafts.

Herein we present our research on a novel three phase antibacterial wound dressing prepared from carbon nanotubes, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and polyvinyl alcohol nanofibers. The AgNPs were generated on carbon nanotubes surfaces to synthesize carbon nanotubes-AgNP nanoparticles which were added into the polyvinyl alcohol nanofibers prior to electrospinning to prepare PVA/carbon nanotubes-AgNP composite nanofibers. All characterizations confirmed the three phase nanofiber architecture. Owing to growth of AgNPs on carbon nanotubes surfaces and embedding into PVA nanofibers the wound dressings are proposed for sustained and safer wound healing applications. The antibacterial test results confirmed excellent bactericidal and prolonged bacterial growth inhibition properties of the nanocomposites which suggest their suitability as sustained antibacterial wound dressing biomaterial.

A novel ternary nanocomposite of Fe3O4 functionalized porous biomass carbon decorated by aligned polyaniline (A-PANI/Fe3O4/PBC) was successfully fabricated by hydrothermal and in situ oxidative polymerization. The morphology and structure of the composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction, fourier transform infrared spectra, scanning electron microcopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectra and vibrating sample magnetometer. The microwave absorbing properties of A-PANI/Fe3O4/PBC composite were investigated in the frequency of 2–18 GHz. The results indicated that the A-PANI/Fe3O4/PBC composite possess excellent microwave absorbing performance, and the minimum reflection loss can be up to −44.8 dB at 10.67 GHz, effective absorbing bandwidth (RL

Multi-layer graphene oxide (MLGO) coated shape memory polyurethane (MLGO@SMPU) with different layers was fabricated by multiple dipping for adjustable shape memory switching devices. The MLGO, which stacked together in parallel, evenly covered the surface of the SMPU. Stress strain testing indicated that the coating of GO improved the mechanical strength of these MLGO@SMPU composites in the stretching stage below the strain of approximately 6%. Adhesive force testing suggested that the first GO layer could adhere well to the SMPU surface, but the interaction force between GO layers was weak. The angle recovery ratio and time, bending recovery force, and angle fixity ratio of these MLGO@SMPU composites were evaluated using homemade evaluation apparatus. Results indicated that with the increase of GO layers from one to five layers, the MLGO@SMPU gave an angle recovery ratio reduced to 83.2%, recovery time decreased to 7.6 s, bending recovery force increased to 18.3 mN, and angle fixity ratio decreased to 83.3%. This novel and straightforward approach of dipping graphene oxide onto shape memory substrates for adjustable recovery ratio, time and force has the potential to be applied to smart switching devices including sensors and actuators.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are effective antimicrobial agents however excess release of silver causes argyria and argyrosis. An strategy to avoid these detrimental side effects is immobilization of AgNPs on several organic and inorganic substrates. Herein, we propose immobilization of AgNPs on TiO2 nanoparticles by an environmentally green process subsequently incorporating the TiO2/AgNP into cellulose acetate (CA) nanofiber matrix. The TiO2/AgNP nanocomposite particles were prepared by coating TiO2 nanoparticles with polydopamine hydrochloride followed by a treatment in AgNO3 solution. Subsequently, the TiO2/AgNP nanocomposites were added into CA solution and electrospun to fabricate CA/TiO2/AgNP composite nanofibers. The samples were characterized by XRD, TEM, XPS, SEM, EDX, FTIR and antibacterial assays. Synthesis of TiO2/AgNP and its loading into CA nanofibers was confirmed by XRD, XPS, TEM and EDX analysis. SEM images indicated regular morphology of the nanofibers. The antibacterial test results confirmed CA/TiO2/AgNP composite nanofibers having excellent antibacterial performances for 36 h and substantial bacterial growth inhibition for 72 h.

In this paper, three bio-reactors were designed to determine the effects of different zero-valent iron (ZVI) powder dosages on anammox. Initially, a high ZVI dosage inhibited the anammox process, while anammox adopted the habitat after long-term culture. The continuous experiment indicated that R2 (100 mg ZVI/L) had no notable effect on shortening the anammox start-up time, while R3 (1000 mg ZVI/L) reduced the start-up time from 96 to 87 days. The stable nitrogen isotope test suggested that the anammox activity of R3 was higher than that of R1 (without ZVI powder) during the stabilisation stage. The anammox growth rate increased by 20% in R3, which was verified by the real-time quantitative PCR results. In comparison to the control, the anammox quantity increased by approximately 44.5% and 54% at 100 and 1000 mg/L on day 120, respectively, which is likely due to lower dissolved oxygen and oxide-reduce potential created by the ZVI powder. The addition of ZVI may release iron ions, reduce the DO and ORP, and regulate the habitat pH conditions, which are beneficial for promoting anammox bacteria. Moreover, ZVI may directly partake in the anammox reaction pathway and improve the total nitrogen removal.

We present our research on dyeability of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers following ultrasonic dyeing method. Although PAN has been extensively utilized in textile apparel, sportswear, upholstery and home furnishing, however, coloration of PAN nanofibers has not yet been reported. PAN is a compact fiber while the nanofiber structure makes it more difficult to color PAN nanofibers. PAN is generally dyed with basic dyes and dyeing is carried out in acidic conditions, while the dyeing process takes about two hours at boiling temperature. A systematic study on dyeability of PAN nanofibers will extend its use in textile apparel industry. Thus, we used ultrasonic energy and first time conducted our research on dyeability of electrospun PAN nanofibers using disperse dyes. Dyeing process parameters such as dyeing time, temperatures and concentrations of dyes were optimized. Ultrasonic dyeing of PAN nanofibers was compared with its conventional dyeing as well. Affect of ultrasonic dyeing on the morphology, chemical state, crystallographic structure and mechanical strength of PAN nanofibers has been studied. PAN nanofiber samples were characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD and tensile strength tests. The results revealed 80 °C and 60 min as optimum temperature and time for ultrasonic dyeing of PAN nanofibers. The ultrasonic dyeing does not affect morphology, chemical and crystalline structure of the PAN nanofibers while it improves their mechanical strength. Our research suggests dyeability of PAN nanofibers with disperse dyes by ultrasonic method and their subsequent use in textile apparels.

Three-dimensional aerogel has been expected to be a promising candidate for lightweight absorber. Here, polypyrrole (PPy) aerogels with elasticity characteristic have been obtained via facile oxidative polymerization and freeze-drying techniques. The low density (54 − 61 mg/cm3) and mechanical strength (15.4 − 18.7 kPa at 50% strain) of the PPy aerogels can be achieved by adjusting the FeCl3/Py molar ratios from 1:1.5 to 1.5:1. And as a microwave absorber for the PPy aerogel (FeCl3/Py = 1:1.5, 10 wt% mixed with paraffin), at the thickness of 2 mm, the minimum reflection loss (RL) could reach − 55 dB at 14 GHz and the efficient bandwidth (RL ≤ − 10 dB, 90% absorption) is 5.5 GHz. Increasing the FeCl3/Py molar ratio to 1:1, the efficient bandwidth of the prepared PPy aerogel expands to 5.6 GHz. The high-performance microwave absorption properties and well mechanical capacities of the PPy aerogels highlight their potential application in the microwave absorbing systems.

Herein we present our research on synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on cellulose nanofibers (CN) by a facile procedure using dopamine hydrochloride (Dopa), as reducing agent. The CN were produced by deacetylation of electrospun cellulose acetate (CA) nanofibers. The CN were then treated with 2 mg/mL of Dopa in 1 M Tris HCl buffer (pH 8.5) followed by soaking in 150 mM AgNO3 solution for generation of AgNPs. The samples were characterized with SEM, XRD, FESEM, EDX, XPS, TEM, FTIR analysis and antibacterial assays. Synthesis of AgNPs was confirmed by XRD, XPS and TEM analysis. The TEM images demonstrated CNAgNP samples well decorated with AgNPs. Sizes of the spherical AgNPs, calculated by Debye–Scherrer method, were 20 nm. Antibacterial test results confirmed excellent bacterial growth inhibition properties of CNAgNP on agar plates and in liquid medium against E. coli and S. aureus strains. The relative cell viability (CFU/mL) test results demonstrated excellent bactericidal potential of the CNAgNP samples against the tested strains. The CNAgNP prepared by an environmentally benign process would thus be a promising nano-biocomposite for antibacterial applications.

Shape memory driving thickness adjustable graphite (G) micro-flakes@shape memory polyurethane (G@SMPU) sponge was fabricated by two-step dipping separately in G-dispersed aqueous solution and SMPU/THF solution for high-performance microwave shielding. The sponge exhibited an ultrahigh G loading ratio (G/sponge, wt/wt) up to 490 wt%. For the first time, dipping coating of SMPU onto the sponge was proposed, and the obtained G@SMPU sponge exhibited a good recovery effect at least above 90% after thorough compression. And also, the thickness could be adjusted by utilizing its shape memory property. For microwave shielding, G-9@SMPU and G-18@SMPU sponges achieved the shielding effectiveness over 20 and 30 dB, respectively. Moreover, varying thickness or compressing repeatedly even up to 100 times would not obviously decrease the shielding effect of the G@SMPU sponge. This suggests the steady distribution and adhesion of G micro-flakes inside the three-dimensional sponge substrate due to the fixing of SMPU.

A novel degumming approach by using steam treatment is proposed to minimize water pollution and consumption in silk wet processing. Sericin removal of Bombyx mori silk fibers was carried out with pressurized steam. The degumming ratio, fine structure and physical properties of the degummed silk fibers as well as energy efficiency were investigated to elucidate the degumming effects of steam treatment. Compared to the conventional neutral soap and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) degumming methods, sericin can be removed by steam treatment without any chemicals, and the degumming ratio as well as physicochemical properties of the degummed silk fibers maintained at a desirable level. Energy efficiency and cost analysis showed that steam degumming is more energy-efficient and economical than the conventional chemical degumming methods. Results showed that steam treatment is a feasible silk degumming method with the benefits of reduction in water pollution and energy consumption.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as catalysts for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to remove recalcitrant organic contaminants has been well reported, however, the separation of MOFs from the solution is difficult because of their powder state, which limits their applications. In the present study, zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF) materials, ZIF-9 and ZIF-12 were pioneered to load on cellulose aerogels, and the hybrid aerogels as metal catalysts to effectively activate PMS for Rhodamine B (RB), tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) and p-nitrophenol (PNP) degradation. The hybrid aerogels/PMS system could remove PNP about 90% in 1 h, which hard to remove from water. The pH value of the solution had no effect on the degradation process, which demonstrated that the hybrid aerogels had excellent pH tolerance. In addition, the mechanism of PNP degradation was investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and free radical trapping methods. The results showed that PMS could effectively activate by hybrid aerogels to produce sulfate radicals (SO4 −), hydroxyl radicals ( OH), and revealed that SO4 − play a key role in degradation. The most important feature of hybrid aerogels is can be easily separated from the solution. The obtained results showed that the hybrid aerogels exhibit excellent recyclability, with no significant effect on degradation. The prepared hybrid aerogels are green, environmentally friendly with high catalytic efficiency. Further, the outstanding degradation of PNP demonstrates the promising prospects of hybrid aerogels as advanced oxidation process (AOP) catalysts.

The addition of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) has been proven to improve the efficiency of the anammox process, however, the mechnism is not clear. Here, the effect of nZVI on anammox microbial community was studied by metagenomic sequencing methods. It was found that 50 mg/L nZVI indeed promoted the removal of NH4+ and NO2- of the anammox reactor and significantly improved the relative abundance of AnAOB (Ca. Brocadia) from 42.1% to 52.5%. What's more, 50 mg/L nZVI increased the abundance of c-di-GMP synthesized protein from 148 rpmr to 252 rpmr in the microbial community and decreased the abundance of c-di-GMP degradation protein from 238 rpmr to 204 rpmr, which indirectly led to the enrichment of c-di-GMP in the microbial community. The enrichment of c-di-GMP reduced the motility of microorganisms in the reactor and promoted the secretion of extracellular polymers by bacteria, which is beneficial to the formation of sludge particles in the anammox reactor. In conclusion, this research clarified the mechanism of nZVI promoting the anammox process and provided theoretical guidance for the engineering application of anammox.

Glass fiber fabrics/hollow glass microspheres (HGM)–waterborne polyurethane (WPU) textile composites were prepared using glass fiber, WPU, and HGM as skeleton material, binder, and insulation filler, respectively, to study the effect of HGM on the thermal insulation performance of glass fiber fabrics. Scanning electron microscopy, Instron 3367 tensile test instrument, thermal constant analysis, and infrared thermal imaging were used to determine the cross-sectional morphology, mechanical property, thermal conductivity, and thermal insulation property, respectively, of the developed materials. The results show that the addition of HGM mixed in WPU significantly enhanced thermal insulation performance of the textile composite with the reduction of thermal conductivity of 45.2% when the volume ratio of HGM to WPU is 0.8 compared with that of material without HGM. The composite can achieve the thermal insulation effect with a temperature difference of 17.74 °C at the temperature field of 70 °C. Meanwhile, the tensile strength of the composite is improved from 14.16 to 22.14 MPa. With these results, it is confirmed that designing hollow glass microspheres (HGM) is an effective way to develop and enhance the high performance of insulation materials with an obvious lightweight of the bulk density reaching about 50%.

In this study, we investigated the potentials of nanomaterials to enhance anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process, in terms of nitrogen removal, microbial enrichment, and activity of key enzymes. Graphene nanosheets (GNs) and γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) were selected due to their catalytic functions as conductive material and electron shuttles, respectively. The obtained results revealed that the optimum dosage of GNs (10 mg/L) boosted the nitrogen removal rate (NRR) by 46 ± 3.1% compared to the control, with maximum NH4+-N and NO2−-N removal of 86.5 ± 2.7% and 97.1 ± 0.5%, respectively. Moreover, hydrazine dehydrogenase (HDH) enzyme activity was augmented by 1.1-fold when using 10 mg/L GNs. The presence of GNs promoted the anammox granulation via enhancement of hydrophobic interaction of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Regarding the use of γ-Fe2O3 NPs, 100 mg/L dose increased NRR by 55 ± 3.8%; however, no contribution to HDH enzyme activity and a decrease in EPS compositions were observed. Given that the abiotic use of γ-Fe2O3 NPs further resulted in high adsorption efficiency (~92%), we conclude that the observed promotion due to γ-Fe2O3 NPs was mainly abiotic. Moreover, the 16S rRNA analysis revealed that the relative abundance of genus C. Jettenia (anammox related bacteria) increased from 11.9% to 12.3% when using 10 mg/L GNs, while declined to 8.3% at 100 mg/L γ-Fe2O3 NPs. Eventually, nanomaterials could stimulate the efficiency of anammox process, and this promotion and associated mechanism depend on their dose and composition.

International audience; Dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) is an important process of nitrate reduction in the environment. The distribution of DNRA bacteria and the relationships with environmental factors in multistage constructed wetland were investigated in this study. The quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis showed that the abundance of DNRA bacteria at all sites ranged from 2.10 × 1010 to 1.10 × 1011 copies/g of dry sediments. The Anaeromyxobacter (belong to Deltaproteobacteria) was the most abundant DNRA bacteria at all sites. The Geobater known as DNRA bacteria was also identified in this study. The abundances of DNRA bacteria, denitrifying bacteria, and anammox bacteria were conspicuously negatively correlated with Eh and positively correlated with the NO3--N removal efficency by statistical analysis.

Aim: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a serious complication of diabetes (DM). Luo Tong formula (LTF) exerts protective effects against DR in rats, but its underlying mechanism remains unknown. Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats injected with streptozotocin (STZ) were used as an experimental diabetes model. LTF or calcium dobesilate (CaD) was administered to diabetic rats via gastric gavage. After the 12 weeks of treatment, blood and tissue samples were collected to determine serum glucose and retinal structure. Blood samples were collected for blood glucose and hemorheology analysis. Gene or protein expression levels were evaluated by immunohistochemistry, western blotting and/or quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results: DM rats exhibits significantly increased blood retinal-barrier (BRB) breakdown and VEGF/VEGFR expression in the retina, and decreased miR-200b and tight junction ZO-1/Occludin/ Claudin-5 genes expression, as well as Ang-1/Tie-2 expressions in the retina compared to normal control group. LTF treatment significantly moderated histological abnormalities in diabetic rats, independent of blood glucose level; improved some hemorrheological parameters; decreased the expressions of VEGF/VEGFR and BRB breakdown, significantly increased PEDF and tight junction proteins ZO-1/Occludin, as well as increased retinal miR-200b expression compared to non-treatment diabetic rats. Moreover, LTF prevented the reduction in Ang-1/Tie-2 expression. Conclusions: LTF treatment ameliorated DR through its repair vascular and attenuate vascular leakage. A mechanism involving miR-200b may contribute to benefit effects.

The effects of FeS on nitrogen removal performance and microbial community of anammox process were studied. During the start-up period, the removal efficiencies of nitrite and total nitrogen were significantly improved by FeS. The addition of FeS increased the content of iron ions in the reactor and promoted the synthesis of heme c, which was involved in the formation of various enzymes. Compared with the control, the abundance of anammox bacteria in the FeS reactor was increased by 29%, and the expression level of the nirS gene (encoding cd1 type nitrite reductase containing heme) was nearly doubled. The content of nitrite reductase (ammonia-forming) in the community was increased by 26.4%. The difference in functional bacteria and enzyme contents in the microbial community resulted in a difference in nitrogen removal rate (NRR) between the two reactors. High-throughput results indicated that FeS increased the richness and diversity of microbial community and enhanced the metabolic function of the microbial community. The addition of FeS did not change the dominant position of Ca. Kuenenia in both reactors. But the relative abundance of heterotrophic denitrifying bacteria was reduced with FeS, which may be related to the inhibition effect of S2− produced by FeS.

High entropy materials are attracting ever-increasing concern on account of their unique structure and unprecedented potential application in various fields. In this letter, a high entropy (Cr0.2Mn0.2Fe0.2Co0.2Ni0.2)3O4 (S-HEO) with Fd3m spinel structure, is prepared by solid-state reaction. Importantly, without the presence of entropy stabilization behavior, single spinel-structure of S-HEO can be retained through the re-heat treatment process. Benefiting from abundant electroactive species and various chemical valance, excellent Li+ storage capability and favorable performance toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are achieved with S-HEO. As anode material for Li ion batteries, S-HEO presents a high specific capacity of 560 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1 and superior capacity retention of 100% after 5000 cycles. In-situ EIS, ex-situ TEM and XRD analysis were conducted to probe insight into the diffusion kinetic and structural evolution of S-HEO upon cycling. Efficient water oxidation with an overpotential of 332 mV to reach 10 mA cm−2 are achieved with S-HEO. With comparison to spinel-type moderate entropy oxides (S-MEOs), the synergic effect between five species highlight the merits of high-entropy feature, manifesting a better OER kinetic and higher stability in KOH solution. This research demonstrates the significant importance of high-entropy concept to boost the performance of high entropy materials for electrochemical application.

To tackle membrane fouling and limited removals of pollutants (nutrients and emerging pollutants) that hinder the wide applications of membrane bioreactor (MBR), attached growth MBR (AGMBR) combining MBR and attached growth process has been developed. This review comprehensively presents the up-to-date developments of media used in both aerobic and anaerobic AGMBRs for treating wastewaters containing conventional and emerging pollutants. It also elaborates the properties of different media, characteristics of attached biomass, and their contributions to AGMBR performance. Conventional media, such as biological activated carbon and polymeric carriers, induce formation of aerobic, anoxic and/or anaerobic microenvironment, increase specific surface area or porous space for biomass retention, improve microbial activities, and enrich diverse microorganisms, thereby enhancing pollutants removal. Meanwhile, new media (i.e. biochar, bioaugmented carriers with selected strain/mixed cultures) do not only eliminate conventional pollutants (i.e. high concentration of nitrogen, etc.), but also effectively remove emerging pollutants (i.e. micropollutants, nonylphenol, adsorbable organic halogens, etc.) by forming thick and dense biofilm, creating anoxic/anaerobic microenvironments inside the media, enriching special functional microorganisms and increasing activity of microorganisms. Additionally, media can improve sludge characteristics (i.e. less extracellular polymeric substances and soluble microbial products, larger floc size, better sludge settleability, etc.), alleviating membrane fouling. Future studies need to focus on the development and applications of more new functional media in removing wider spectrum of emerging pollutants and enhancing biogas generation, as well as scale-up of lab-scale AGMBRs to pilot or full-scale AGMBRs.

Symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells based on yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte and Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.5O6-δ (SFM) electrode are prepared via phase-inversion and impregnation processes. The YSZ symmetrical electrolyte support is constructed using two porous frameworks and one thin-dense-membrane via phase-inversion combined with drip-coating techniques. SFM is infiltrated into the porous frameworks of the symmetric YSZ support to work as electrodes. Nanoscale Pr6O11 catalysts are further infiltrated into the electrodes to promote electrochemical performance. The optimal loading of SFM and Pr6O11 are systematically investigated. At 800 °C, with the optimal loading of SFM (12 wt%), the polarization resistance (Rp) for anode and cathode of the cell decrease to 0.19 and 0.10 Ω cm2, respectively. The maximum power density (MPD) achieves 301 mW•cm−2 in H2 at 800 °C. After loading Pr6O11, the Rp for anode and cathode further decrease by 47% to 0.10 Ω•cm2 and by 80% to 0.021 Ω•cm2, respectively. And the MPD improves by 51% to 455 mW•cm−2 (at 800 °C). These results and analysis of distribution of relaxation times demonstrate that the introduction of Pr6O11 as bifunctional catalysts is a promising approach for simultaneously improving H2 fuel oxidation and O2 reduction activities.

Flexible strain sensors have shown great application value in wearable devices. In the past decades, researchers have spent numerous efforts on developing high-stretchability, excellent dynamic durability, and large linear working range flexible strain sensors and shaped a series of important research results. However, the viscoelasticity of the elastic polymer is always a big challenge to develop a flexible sensor. Here, to overcome this challenge, we developed a novel self-repairing carbon nanotubes/ethylene vinyl acetate (CNTs/EVA) fiber strain sensor prepared by embedding the CNTs on the surface of the swollen shape memory EVA fiber via the ultrasonic method. The CNTs/EVA fiber strain sensors responded with significant results, with high stretchability (190% strain), large linear working range (up to 88% strain), excellent dynamic durability (5000 cycles), and fast response speed (312 ms). In addition, the permanently damaged conductive network of the strain sensors, caused by the viscoelasticity of elastic polymer, can restore above the transforming temperature of the shape memory CNTs/EVA fiber. Moreover, the performance of the restored strain sensors was almost as same as that of the original strain sensors. Furthermore, human health monitoring tests show that the CNTs/EVA fiber has a broad application prospect for human health monitoring in wearable electronic devices.

A full-scale sewage treatment plant in Xi'an city is discovered as the first mainstream anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) treatment process in China. Whether its biological mechanism is the nitritation-anammox or partial denitrification (PD)-anammox brought violent controversy between two groups. As a third party, here we uncovered the mystery of the moving-bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) as a PD-anammox process by analyzing the diversity and phylogenetic investigation of communities by reconstruction of unobserved states (PICRUSt) of microbes in anoxic pond. Anammox bacteria was found in the MBBR anoxic tank, which abundance is 8.9 times of that in the common anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process, confirming the existence of anammox process. The denitrifying bacteria (DNB) content in the anoxic tank is 5.9 times of the content of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB), thus the DNB-anammox system is proved at the microbial composition level. The PICRUSt analysis found that ammonium nitrogen is mainly derived from the deamination of urea. The functional genes NAR and AMO of DNB and AOB are 910.84 and 5.80 rpms, respectively. The NAR gene content is 157.0 times of the AMO gene content and it is proved at the genetic level that the nitrite in the anoxic pool is mainly derived from denitrification. This study demonstrated the feasibility and advantages of the PD-anammox in the anammox process, which is different from the traditional nitritation-anammox demonstrated in Strass Wastewater Treatment Plant, Austria and Changi Water Reclamation Plant, Singapore and provided an alternative option for the mainstream application of anammox.

Objective Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an aberrant lipid metabolism disease. Hypoxia inducible factor-1 (HIF-1α) is a transcription factor which plays an important part in adapting lower oxygen condition. Here, we aimed to clarify the relationship between HIF-1α and NAFLD. Methods HepG2 cells was stimulated by oleic acid (OA) and palmitic acid (PA) to establish in vitro model of NAFLD. The expression of lipid metabolism-related genes, the binding of PPARα to HIF-1α promoter, the lipid deposition, and oxidative stress were detected by qRT-PCR, western blot, Chip assay, Oil Red O staining and ELISA assays, respectively. Results HIF-1α silence promoted lipid accumulation in NAFLD cells, accompanying by the significantly increased contents of TG (triglyceride) and ApoB (apolipoprotein B). In HepG2 cells treated with OA/PA, the expression of lipid metabolism-related genes and proteins, including APOE, A2m, TNFRSF11B, LDLr, and SREBP2, and the intracellular lipid deposition were up-regulated and further aggravated after silencing HIF-1α. In addition, the loss of HIF-1α could remarkably elevate MDA contents while inhibit the activities of beneficial antioxidant enzymes SOD and GSH-Px to activate oxidative stress, and promote the secretion of pro-inflammatory IL-6 and TNF-α to aggravate inflammation in NDFLD cells. PPARα positively bound to HIF-1α promoter. The silence of PPARα aggravated lipid deposition under normal or hypoxic environment in NAFLD cells. In addition, PPAR-α silence could decrease the expression of HIF-1α and ANGPTL4 in NAFLD cell model; moreover, the expression of APOE, A2m and TNFRSF11B and the production of TG and MDA were increased by PPAR-α suppression. Conclusion HIF-1α plays a crucial role in the regulation of lipid metabolism through activating PPAR-α/ANGPTL4 signaling pathway in NAFLD.

From discovery in the early 1990s to completion of full-scale anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) reactor, it took almost two decades to uncover the secret veil of anammox bacteria. There were three milestones during the commercialization of anammox: the development of the first enrichment culture medium, completion of first commercial anammox reactor, and fast start-up of full-scale anammox plant. Till now, the culture of anammox bacteria experienced a big progress through two general strategies: (a) to start up a reactor from scratch, and (b) to seed the reactor with enriched anammox sludge. The first full-scale anammox reactor took 3.5 years to realize full operation using the first approach due to several reasons besides the lack of anammox sludge. On the contrary, the first Asian anammox reactor started up in 2 months, thanks to the availability of anammox seed. Along with the implementation of anammox plants, anammox eventually becomes the priority choice for ammonium wastewater treatment.

Background. Banxia Xiexin Decoction (BXXD) reportedly regulates glycolipid metabolism and inhibits pancreatic β-cell apoptosis. This study is aimed at investigating the protective effect of BXXD on tert-butyl hydroperoxide- (t-BHP-) induced apoptosis in MIN6 cells and the underlying mechanisms. Methods. MIN6 cells were preincubated with BXXD or liraglutide (Li) with or without PI3K inhibitor LY294002 (LY) for 12 h, following which t-BHP was added to induce MIN6 cell apoptosis. The protective effects of BXXD on MIN6 cells were evaluated by detecting cell viability and proliferation and glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS). The antiapoptotic effects were evaluated by Hoechst 33342 staining and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling assay (TUNEL). Malondialdehyde and glutathione peroxidase content and superoxide dismutase activity were measured using commercial kits. The expression of PI3K/AKT/FOXO1 signaling pathway-related signal molecules, and that of apoptotic indicators Bax, P27, and Caspase-3, was quantified using western blotting. Results. Preincubation with BXXD significantly improved t-BHP-induced proliferation inhibition and apoptosis and enhanced GSIS. t-BHP induced the generation of reactive oxygen species and inhibited the activities of antioxidant enzymes, which could be neutralized by pretreatment with BXXD. BXXD promoted the phosphorylation of AKT and FOXO1 in t-BHP-induced MIN6 cells. Moreover, BXXD attenuated the expression of related apoptotic indicators Bax, P27, and Caspase-3. LY abolished these effects of BXXD. Conclusion. BXXD protected MIN6 cells against t-BHP-induced apoptosis and improved insulin secretory function through modulation of the PI3K/AKT pathway and the downstream FOXO1, thus suggesting a novel therapeutic approach for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

The nutrient-rich wastewaters if discharged to the environment without treatment may cause eutrophication in receiving water bodies and deterioration of the freshwater ecosystem. The regulatory authorities enact more stringent standards to push the industries and municipalities for the rigorous treatment of wastewater to meet the effluent discharge standards. Conventionally, wastewaters are treated with nitrification–denitrification (N–DN) process to remove nitrogen compounds. However, wastewater having a lower carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio will increase the treatment cost due to the addition of external carbon sources. Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process appears a suitable substitute to N–DN at a lower C/N ratio. Anammox is a chemolithoautotrophic process, belonging to phylum Planctomycetes, and they are slow-growing bacteria. Different strategies, such as, biofilm formation, granulation, and gel immobilization, have been applied to maintain a critical mass of bacterial cells in the system by avoiding washout from the bioreactor. The gel immobilization of anammox appears the best alternative to the natural process of biofilm formation and granulation. Polyvinyl alcohol–sodium alginate, polyethylene glycol, and water-born polyurethane are the most reported materials used for the entrapment of anammox bacteria. However, dissolution of the gel beads refrains its application for long-term bioprocess. Magnetic powder coat on the surface of the beads may increase the mechanical strength and durability of pellets. This chapter discusses natural techniques of anammox immobilization in brief and gel immobilization in detail. The properties of different materials used for immobilization of anammox are summarized. Application and problem of immobilization technology for the commercialization of this technology are also addressed. This chapter adds new knowledge about the application of immobilization technology in a real application from the laboratory-scale study. Finally, some new idea will also give a new direction in this regard.

Background Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a serious microvascular complication of diabetes and remains the leading cause of blindness in adults. Retinal inflammation is playing a crucial role in the development of DR, and targeting inflammatory mediators is a promising strategy for controlling DR. Here, we investigated compound Chinese medicine Luo Tong formula (LTF) alleviated retinal inflammatory responses in a STZ-induced diabetic rat model. Methods Sprague–Dawley rats were divided into four groups: control, streptozotocin-induced diabetic, LTF-treated diabetic, and calcium dobesilate (CaD)-treated diabetic rats. Blood samples were collected for blood glucose examination. Hematoxylin–eosin and periodic acid-Schiff staining were conducted for light microscopy observations. Retinal cell apoptosis was detected using the TUNEL assay. Proteins expression was quantified by Western blotting and/or immunohistochemistry, and gene expression was assessed by real-time PCR. Results Diabetic rats showed significant increases in the expression of tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), and the phospho-p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p-p38-MAPK)/p38 MAPK ratio compared to control rats. LTF treatment significantly improved both retinal and pancreatic pathological injury, LTF treatment also inhibited inducible the p-p38 MAPK/p38 MAPK ratio and NF-κB activation and decreased the subsequent induction of the retinal expression of proinflammatory mediators TNF-α, IL-1β, MCP-1 and ICAM-1 compared to diabetic rats. LTF also exhibited a protective effect on islet function. Conclusions LTF before the onset of DR can alleviate retinal pathological injury, LTF may play an anti-inflammatory role by inhibiting p38-MAPK and then inhibiting NF-κB pathway. But further studies are needed to confirm this conclusion. Trial registration This is an animal experiment, trial registration is not necessary.

Nowadays, photothermal agents have attained considerable attention in nanomedicine for the treatment of cancer after chemotherapy, surgery, biological therapy and radiotherapy. In this work, we showed a sericin-based, simple approach for synthesis of sericin functionalized reduced graphene oxide (SRGO) with low cytotoxicity and photo thermal efficiency. During the synthesis, the GO is deoxygenated in situ and functionalized by sericin, a low-cost, silk protein and concurrently forms SRGO. The subsequent SRGO disperse well in water with higher biocompatibility because of the decoration of sericin on graphene sheets. The prepared SRGO exhibited a good photothermal capacity with near-infrared laser irradiation (808 nm) for efficient killing of HeLa cells. Further, the synthesized SRGO could act as a promising material for photo thermal therapy applications in future.

Background Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is the main cause of end-stage kidney disease and has become a heavy economic and social burden due to its high prevalence and morbidity. The most effective strategy is that patients with DKD should be diagnosed and treated early. Preliminary studies showed that the Chinese herbal Tangshen Formula (TSF) may delay the progression of DKD, reducing microalbuminuria and macroalbuminuria and improving renal function. We designed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of TSF in patients with DKD. Methods/design This trial is a 13-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. A total of 632 participants will be randomized in a 1:1 ratio to an experiment group (TSF plus losartan) and a control group (placebo plus losartan). The trial cycle will last 24 weeks. The primary outcome will be the change in the urine microalbumin–creatinine ratio from baseline to week 24. The secondary outcome will be the change in the rate of progression to the clinical proteinuria period after intervention, the rate of urine microalbumin negative conversion, the rate of normal urinary microalbumin, the doubling rate of the baseline creatinine value and the glomerular filtration rate between the two groups. Safety in medication will also be evaluated. Discussion We hypothesize that patients with type 2 diabetes in the early stage of DKD will benefit from TSF. If successful, this study will provide evidence-based recommendations for clinicians. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03009864. Registered January 2017.
