BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE In chronic kidney disease (CKD), patients inevitably reach end-stage renal disease and require renal transplant. Evidence suggests that CKD is associated with metabolite disorders. However, the molecular pathways targeted by metabolites remain enigmatic. Here, we describe roles of 1-hydroxypyrene in mediating renal fibrosis. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH We analysed 5406 urine and serum samples from patients with Stage 1-5 CKD using metabolomics, and 1-hydroxypyrene was identified and validated using longitudinal and drug intervention cohorts as well as 5/6 nephrectomised and adenine-induced rats. KEY RESULTS We identified correlations between the urine and serum levels of 1-hydroxypyrene and the estimated GFR in patients with CKD onset and progression. Moreover, increased 1-hydroxypyrene levels in serum and kidney tissues correlated with decreased renal function in two rat models. Up-regulated mRNA expression of aryl hydrocarbon receptor and its target genes, including CYP1A1, CYP1A2 and CYP1B1, were observed in patients and rats with progressive CKD. Further we showed up-regulated mRNA expression of aryl hydrocarbon receptor and its three target genes, plus up-regulated nuclear aryl hydrocarbon receptor protein levels in mice and HK-2 cells treated with 1-hydroxypyrene, which caused accumulation of extracellular matrix components. Treatment with aryl hydrocarbon receptor short hairpin RNA or flavonoids inhibited mRNA expression of aryl hydrocarbon receptor and its target genes in 1-hydroxypyrene-induced HK-2 cells and mice. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS Metabolite 1-hydroxypyrene was demonstrated to mediate renal fibrosis through activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor signalling pathway. Targeting aryl hydrocarbon receptor may be an alternative therapeutic strategy for CKD progression.

A novel and high-efficiency Pd/TMxOy-rGO/CFP (TMxOy = Co3O4, Mn3O4, Ni(OH)2) electrocatalyst for directly integrated membrane electrode was synthesized by controllable cyclic voltammetry electrodeposition combined with hydrothermal process. The results showed excellent performance towards methanol oxidation reduction. The Pd/Co3O4-rGO/CFP as-prepared catalyst has the best electrocatalytic activity, and mass activity is 5181 mA·mg−1Pd, which is about 40 times and 4.3 times that of the commercial Pd/C and Pt/C catalyst (JM). It can be attributed that the small size of Pd nanoparticle, uniformity of distribution, and the synergistic interaction between transition metal oxide on the support surface and Pd nanoparticles. The prepared Pd/TMxOy-rGO/CFP composite electrode is a promising catalyst for integrated membrane electrode assembly of proton exchange membrane fuel cells in the future.

Direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) as a promising device for converting chemical energy to electricity has been paid ever-increasing attention. However, the slow kinetics of ethanol electrooxidation at an anode hinders the application of DEFCs. Although Pt is the best catalyst among all the pure metal catalysts, it still has a relatively poor ability to break the C C bond, is deactivated by the accumulated COad intermediates, and undergoes unwanted desired structure change over long-term operation. In recent years, the addition of other metals to form binary, ternary, and quaternary catalysts have significantly improved electroactivity and stability. Ternary catalysts can have numerous element combinations and complicated architectures and, therefore, have been the subject of considerable research. In this review, most of the reported ternary catalysts will be summarized and categorized according to their structure while discussing the essence of the role of each component.

The regulatory relationship between silent information regulator 2 (SIRT2) and glucose 6‐phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is still unclear. The present study aimed to explore the function of SIRT2 and its regulatory effect on G6PD in ccRCC. The Cancer Genome Atlas data mining of SIRT2 was first analyzed. Quantitative real‐time PCR and western blot analyses were used to assess the mRNA and protein expression levels, respectively. Cell viability, colony formation, cell cycle, cell apoptosis, and TUNEL assays and EdU staining were used to investigate the roles of SIRT2 in ccRCC proliferation and apoptosis. The coimmunoprecipitation (Co‐IP) assay was used to analyze the association between SIRT2 and G6PD in ccRCC cells. Quantitative Co‐IP assay was used to detect the levels of G6PD ubiquitination and small ubiquitin‐related modifier 1 (SUMO1). An in vivo experiment was also carried out to confirm in vitro findings. The results indicated that SIRT2 promoted ccRCC proliferation and inhibited apoptosis by regulating cell cycle and apoptosis related proteins. Silent information regulator 2 interacted with G6PD, facilitated its activity through deacetylation, and increased its stability by reducing its ubiquitination and enhancing its SUMO1 modification. Silent information regulator 2 also promoted ccRCC tumor development in vivo. Taken together, the present study indicated that SIRT2 promoted ccRCC progression by increasing G6PD activity and stability, and it could be a potential new diagnostic and therapeutic target for ccRCC., The present study explores the function of silent information regulator 2 (SIRT2) and its regulatory effect of on glucose 6‐phosphate dehydrogenase in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). It aims to provide new molecular clues for targeted treatment of patients with ccRCC. The study supports an oncogenic role for SIRT2 in ccRCC and SIRT2 might be a potential therapeutic target for ccRCC.

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (CsPbX3 NCs) have been regarded as promising materials in photocatalysis. Combining metal single atoms with CsPbX3 NCs may be a practical way in exploring perovskite-based catalysts. However, such hybrids have not been achieved experimentally yet, mainly due to the weak interaction between the metal atom and the CsPbX3 surface. Here, we demonstrate that Pt single atoms can be deposited on CsPbBr3 NCs through a photoassisted approach, in which the surface was partially oxidized first, followed by the anchoring of Pt single atoms through the formation of Pt-O and Pt-Br bonds. The deposition of Pt single atoms can significantly change the photophysical properties of CsPbBr3 NCs by inducing the generation of deep trap states in the band gap. The as-prepared Pt-SA/CsPbBr3 can be used as efficient and durable catalysts for photocatalytic semi-hydrogenation of propyne. A CsPbBr3 nanocrystal might be a suitable substrate for anchoring other metal single atoms, such as Cu, Au, Ag, Pd, and so on.

This paper reports that the optical properties of anthraquinone (AQ) and its photo-catalytic performance in the visible light-driven p-xylene (PX) oxidation can be fine-tuned and improved through varying its skeleton substituents at the molecular level, and the electron-withdrawing substituent exhibits a better improvement effect than the electron-donating one. The best catalyst 2-carboxyanthraquinone (AQ-COOH) can achieve 70.9% PX conversion and 88.2% p-toluic acid selectivity under visible light illumination and 1 atm O2 pressure. The addition of benzenesulfonic acid in the above photocatalytic system can further increase PX conversion to 86.7%, along with a significant improvement in the selectivity of p-carboxybenzaldehyde and terephthalic acid, which likely originates from the unique recombination behavior of the photo-generated charge carriers of the catalyst and the additive driven by the strong interactions between their aromatic skeletons and acidic substituents. Furthermore, AQ-COOH can achieve almost quantitative yield of acetylacetone in ethylbenzene photooxidation and the regulating effect of toluene's para-position substituents on its reactivity is also reported in the AQ-COOH photocatalysis system. Based on quenching tests and EPR spectral characterizations, the oxygen vacancies (h+), superoxide free radicals (O2•-) and singlet oxygen (1O2) as the photo-generated active species are involved in the proposed photo-catalysis mechanism.

Controllable fabrication of Fe-N-C based single-atom catalysts (SACs) for enhanced electrocatalytic performance is highly desirable but still challenging. Here, an in situ surface-confined strategy was demonstrated for the synthesis of single atomic Fe-N4 on N-doped carbon nanoleaves (L-FeNC). The in situ generated Zn3[Fe(CN)6]2 could not only serve as a protection layer against collapse of nanoleaves but also provide abundant Fe source for the formation of Fe-N moieties during pyrolysis, leading to high surface area and high graphitization degree of L-FeNC simultaneously. Benefiting from abundant Fe-N4 active sites, enhanced mass and charge transfer, the as-prepared L-FeNC manifested a half-wave potential of 0.89 V for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in 0.1 M KOH. A maximum power density of 140 mW cm−2 and stable discharge voltage even after operation for 50,000 s have been demonstrated when the L-FeNC was used as air cathode for Zn-air battery. This work not only provided a unique surface-confined strategy for the synthesis of two-dimensional nanocarbons, but also demonstrated the significant benefit from rational design and engineering of Fe-N-C SACs, thus offering great opportunities for fabrication of efficient energy conversion and storage devices.

Electrochemical reductions of CO2 (ECRR) and N2 (ENRR) can not only reduce CO2 emissions in the air but also make use of N2 and H2O, the most extensive resources on earth, to produce high value-added chemicals, which has become one of the hot research directions. In this study, the formation energy (Ef) and dissolution potential (Udiss) of 96 two-dimensional catalysts derived from different defect sites of monoclinic crystal boron nitride (BN) were calculated, and the catalysts with thermodynamic and electrochemical stability were selected. The suitable catalysts for producing HCOOH (Ga/In@N-BN), CO (Sn@BN), and CH3OH (Co@N-BN) by ECRR and NH3 (Fe@BN) by ENRR were predicated based on a selective calculation method. The results obtained can provide guidance for the design and development of new catalysts for ECRR and ENRR.

To improve the production of cephalotaxine and explore its biosynthesis pathway in the suspension cells of Cephalotaxus mannii, the cell suspension cultures were separately treated with elicitors, including coronatine (0.5, 1.0, 2.0 μmol/L) and methyl jasmonate (100 μmol/L), and then analyzed their transcriptome differences. The results showed that coronatine could improve the content of cephalotaxine in suspension cells of C. mannii. The highest product (6.75 mg/L) appeared in the coronatine treatment of 1.0 μmol/L, which was higher than that of methyl jasmonate treatment (4.29 mg/L) and control (3.14 mg/L). The key enzyme of the shikimic acid pathway, 3-deoxy-d-arabino-heptulosonate-7-phosphate synthase (DS) activity increased after 24 h of adding elicitors above. Transcriptome analysis indicated that the phenylpropane pathway, shikimic acid pathway, glucose metabolism process, phenylalanine, and tyrosine synthesis pathway were involved in the synthesis of cephalotaxine. In addition, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), hexokinase, phenylalanine ammonialyase (PAL), and Cytochrome P450, etc. were found out to be closely related to the cephalotaxine accumulation. It could be concluded that coronatine promoted the synthesis of cephalotaxine by affecting the expression of some enzymes, especially DS in the synthesis pathway of cephalotaxine. Coronatine (1.0 μmol/L) led a yield of 6.75 mg/L cephalotaxine, which was 2.15 times of the control. The transcriptome analysis indicated DS played an important role in cephalotaxine biosynthesis.

Glyburide (Gly) could inhibit NLRP3 inflammasome, as well as could be treated with Type 2 diabetes as a common medication. Despite more and more studies show that Gly could influence cancer risk and tumor growth, it remains unclear about the effect of Gly in lung tumorigenesis. To evaluate whether Gly inhibited lung tumorigenesis and explore the possible mechanisms, a benzo(a)pyrene [B(a)p] plus lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced non-diabetes mice model was established with B(a)p for 4 weeks and once a week (1 mg/mouse), then instilled with LPS for 15 weeks and once every 3 weeks (2.5 μg/mouse) intratracheally. Subsequently, Gly was administered by gavage (10 μl/g body weight) 1 week before B(a)p were given to the mice until the animal model finished (when Gly was first given named Week 0). At the end of the experiment called Week 34, we analyzed the incidence, number and histopathology of lung tumors, and detected the expression of NLRP3, IL-1β, and Cleaved-IL-1β protein. We found that vehicles and tricaprylin+Gly could not cause lung carcinogenesis in the whole process. While the incidence and mean tumor count of mice in B(a)P/LPS+Gly group were decreased compared with B(a)p/LPS group. Moreover, Gly could alleviate inflammatory changes and reduce pathological tumor nest numbers compared with mice administrated with B(a)p/LPS in histopathological examination. The B(a)p/LPS increased the expression of NLRP3, IL-1β, and Cleaved-IL-1β protein significantly than Vehicle, whereas decreased in B(a)P/LPS+Gly (0.96 mg/kg) group compared with B(a)p/LPS group. Results suggested glyburide might inhibit NLRP3 inflammasome to attenuate inflammation-related lung tumorigenesis caused by intratracheal instillation of B(a)p/LPS in non-diabetes mice.

Aims/Introduction To explore the potential role of irisin in the outcomes of newly diagnosed prediabetes. Materials and Methods Data were obtained from the Guiyang subcenter of the Risk Evaluation of cAncers in Chinese diabeTic Individuals: a lONgitudinal (REACTION) study. A total of 2,530 participants had newly diagnosed prediabetes at baseline and completed follow up. The nested 1:1 case–control study included 161 participants who developed diabetes mellitus at follow up, and 161 age‐ and sex‐matched controls. The follow‐up study included 86 matched case–control pairs. Fasting serum irisin levels were measured using enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. Results Baseline serum irisin levels were higher in the cases than in the controls (P = 0.002); high baseline serum irisin levels were an independent risk factor for the development of diabetes (odds ratio 1.235, 95% confidence interval 1.025–1.488). After adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), smoking, exercise, and family history of diabetes, subjects in the highest quartile of irisin levels had a higher risk of diabetes than those in the lowest quartile (odds ratio 3.065, 95% confidence interval 1.511–6.218). The extent of decrease in irisin levels during follow‐up was greater in the cases than in the controls (P, This is the first longitudinal study to investigate the potential role of irisin in the outcomes of newly diagnosed prediabetes and whether it can be a predictor of diabetes in prediabetic individuals. We believe that our study makes a significant contribution to the literature, because we found a clear association between serum irisin levels and the outcomes of newly diagnosed prediabetes.

The strong metal–support interaction (SMSI) between metals and reducible supports (e.g., CeO2, TiO2, and SnO2), which has been widely investigated, plays a very important role in heterogeneous catalysis. We report the first example of SMSI between palladium (Pd) and gallium oxide (Ga2O3) within a PdGa nanoparticle (denoted as PdxGay NP, where x:y is the atomic ratio of Pd and Ga). The typical features of classic SMSI, such as electron transfer between Ga2O3 and Pd and suppression of H2 and CO adsorption, are successfully observed on PdxGay NPs. Detailed characterizations and control experiments demonstrate that the coexistence of PdGa alloy and Ga2O3 in PdxGay NPs plays a vital role in the formation of SMSI. To systematically study the effects of SMSI on catalytic performance, PdxGay NPs were used as “self-supported catalysts” for propyne semi-hydrogenation (PSH), a critical process for removing trace propyne from propylene in industry. It is shown that optimized Pd0.34Ga1 NPs give a propylene selectivity of 98.2% at a propyne conversion of 96.6% at 30 °C and atmospheric pressure, which is much higher than that of pure Pd NPs and Pd/Ga2O3 catalysts prepared by a conventional wet-impregnation method. The reaction paths of PSH on PdxGay NPs have been further revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work may not only deepen the basic understanding of SMSI, but also promote the design and application of heterogeneous catalysts.

Conventional templating synthesis confines the growth of seeds in rigid spaces to achieve faithful morphological replication. Herein, we explore the use of spherical shape-deformable polymeric nanoshells to regulate the anisotropic growth of Ag nanoplates. The flexible shells deform adaptively to accommodate the initial overgrowth of the seeds but restrict the growth in the directions where the shells are fully stretched, eventually producing nanoplates with an unconventional circular profile. The diameter of the final Ag nanoplates can be precisely predicted by stretching and flattering the nanoshells into a plate-like capsule while retaining their original internal surface area. Furthermore, unlike conventional templates, the polymer shells eventually turn themselves into a conformal coating that binds to the surface of the full-grown Ag nanoplates and significantly enhances their stability against oxidative etching.

Periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PdLFs) are an elongated cell type in the periodontium with matrix and bone regulatory functions which become abnormal in periodontal disease (PD). Here we found that the normally elongated and oriented PdLF nucleus becomes rounded and loses orientation in a mouse model of PD. Using in vitro micropatterning of cultured primary PdLF cell shape, we show that PdLF elongation correlates with nuclear elongation and the presence of thicker, contractile F-actin fibers. The rounded nuclei in mouse PD models in vivo are, therefore, indicative of reduced actomyosin tension. Inhibiting actomyosin contractility by inhibiting myosin light chain kinase, Rho kinase or myosin ATPase activity, in cultured PdLFs each consistently reduced messenger RNA levels of bone regulatory protein osteoprotegerin (OPG). Infection of cultured PdLFs with two different types of periodontal bacteria (Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum) failed to recapitulate the observed nuclear rounding in vivo, upregulated nonmuscle myosin II phosphorylation and downregulated OPG. Collectively, our results add support to the hypothesis that PdLF contractility becomes decreased and contributes to disease progression in PD.

The slow kinetics at the cathode of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) seriously limits the efficiencies of fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Pt, the state-of-the-art ORR electrocatalyst, suffers from high cost, low earth abundance, and poor stability. Here a self-templated strategy based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is proposed for the fabrication of hollow nitrogen-doped carbon spheres that are embedded with cobalt nanoparticles (Co/HNC). The Co/HNC manifests better ORR activities, methanol tolerance, and stability than commercial Pt/C. The high ORR performance of Co/NHC can be attributed to the hollow structure which provides enlarged electrochemically active surface area, the formation of more Co-N species, and the introduction of defects. This work highlights the significance of rational engineering of MOFs for enhanced ORR activity and stability and offers new routes to the design and synthesis of high-performance electrocatalysts.

Inorganic nanomaterials are widely used in heterogenous catalysis. With the development of nanoscience and nanotechnology, chemists can precisely control the size, morphology, and exposed facets of nanocrystals (NCs) in an elegant manner, further tailoring their catalytic performance towards diverse reactions. In this review, we focus on the design principles of high-performance catalysts using metal NCs and oxide NCs. Special attention is paid to the shape control and surface engineering of NCs. Some practically important heterogeneous catalytic reactions over nanocatalysts will be discussed. Finally, an outlook and perspective in nano-catalysis will be provided. The goal of this review is to discuss recent advances and perspective on heterogeneous catalysis using inorganic nanomaterials and motivate researchers to design efficient catalysts with high activity, selectivity and stability.

Hydrogen is the core source to both refinery and synthetic plant of chemicals. Refinery consumes high purity hydrogen while synthetic plant of chemicals needs syngas consists of hydrogen and carbon oxides. As main hydrogen production technologies, industrial coal gasification and steam methane reforming based pathways generate H2, CO and CO2, which is actually the mixture of hydrogen and carbon oxides. Hence, the gases demand of refinery and synthetic plant of chemicals and their supply from hydrogen production can form hybrid hydrogen networks. On the basis of complementary reuse, this paper firstly proposes integration of hybrid hydrogen network for refinery and synthetic plant of chemicals. Superstructures of individual and hybrid hydrogen networks are employed as problem illustration and corresponding linear programming (LP) mathematical models are formulated. Practical refinery and synthetic plant of chemicals cases are employed to demonstrate its application. Compared with individual networks, the natural gas conservation case can recover 8660.4 Nm3·h-1 hydrogen in purge gas, reduce 1386.6 Nm3·h-1 CO2 emission, equaling to reduction of 278.11 kmol·h-1 natural gas feedstock and 14.8% of total gas production load; the coal conservation case can even waive the total coal consumption and extra 104.1 kmol·h-1 natural gas, recover 8660.4 Nm3·h-1 hydrogen in purge gas, reduce 5255.8 Nm3·h-1 of CO2 emission and decrease 21.2% of the total gas production load. Furthermore, economic evaluation is also placed to account for the economic advantage of hybrid network.

All-inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have been promising candidates in various optoelectrical fields. It is still challenging to further enhance their optical properties and stability to meet the requirements of practical applications. Herein, we develop a passivation strategy towards CsPbBr3 NCs by using inorganic phosphate and bromide anions. Phosphate can coordinate with lead ions on CsPbBr3 NCs as capping ligands; meanwhile, excess bromide can strengthen the repair of surface trapping sites. The treated NCs exhibit near-unity quantum yield and boosted radiative recombination. In addition, obvious enhancement has been realized in their durability against polar solvents. A white light emitting diode (WLED) has been fabricated by employing the passivated NCs as a green light source, which possesses high luminous efficiency and operational stability.

Nerve guide conduits (NGCs) can replace autogenous nerve grafting in the treatment of peripheral nerve system (PNS) injury. However, the modulus of polyurethane NGCs that affects the outcome of PNS repair has been rarely elucidated in vivo. In this study, we developed biodegradable waterborne polyurethane (BWPU) NGCs with an outer BWPU membrane and an inner three-dimensional scaffold structure. The mechanical properties of BWPU NGCs can be modified by adjusting the molar content of polyethylene glycol (PEG) in the soft segments within the BWPU. Two types of BWPU NGCs with different moduli were prepared, containing 17% and 25% PEG in BWPU (termed as BWPU 17 NGCs and BWPU 25 NGCs, respectively). In rat sciatic nerves with 10-mm transected injury, mechanically stronger BWPU 17 NGCs exhibited superior nerve repair, which was similar to that obtained by the current gold standard autograft implantation, whereas weaker BWPU 25 NGCs displayed an unsatisfactory effect. Histological results revealed that both BWPU NGCs had anti-inflammatory effects and altered the activation state of macrophages to M2 phenotypes to enhance PNS regeneration. The analysis of growth-associated protein 43 expression, which regulates axon growth, revealed that the mechanical properties of BWPU NGCs influence the outcome of PNS regeneration by affecting the formation and extension of axons. These findings suggest that the mechanical properties of NGCs could play a key role in regulating PNS repair and should be considered in future biomaterial NGC designs.

Zr-Based catalysts have been extensively applied in Meerwein–Ponndorf–Verley type catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) reactions, but they are easily deactivated in the CTH conversion of high concentrations of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (γ-GVL). This work discloses that by using cheap glucose and ZrCl4 as two main raw materials, glucose phosphate carbamide zirconium (GluPC-Zr) is easily synthesized at large scale and low cost via a simple two-step conversion. The constructed GluPC-Zr has enhanced Lewis acid–base properties and good porosity, thus exhibiting outstanding activity for the CTH reactions of LA or its esters with isopropanol (IPA), providing 95–98% γ-GVL yields. Because of the excellent esterification performance of the introduced acidic phosphate groups, GluPC-Zr also works well at high LA concentrations, achieving a much higher turnover frequency (TOF, 8.2 mmol γ-GVL per g catalyst per h) than previously reported Zr-based catalysts (TOF, 0.2–2.4). And it shows excellent reusability in the reaction of LA with IPA, still providing ca. 95% γ-GVL yield after the seventh cycle run. This work provides a preferential esterification strategy for LA to hamper catalyst deactivation, which is of special significance for the large-scale production of γ-GVL from biomass-derived LA and a low-cost GluPC-Zr catalyst.

The production of CO from the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is of great interest in the renewable energy storage and conversion, the neutral carbon emission, and carbon recycle utilization. Silver (Ag) is one of the catalytic metals that are active for electrochemical CO2 reduction into CO, but the catalysis requires a large overpotential to achieve higher selectivity. Constructing a metal-oxide interface could be an effective strategy to boost both activity and selectivity of the catalysis. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were first conducted to reveal the chemical insights of the catalytic performance on the interface between metal oxide and Ag(111) (MOx/Ag(111)). The results show that the *COOH intermediates can be more stabilized on the surfaces of MOx/Ag(111) than pure Ag(111). The hydrogen evolution reaction on MOx/Ag(111) can be suppressed due to the significantly higher Gibbs free energy for hydrogen adsorption (ΔGH*), thereby enhancing the selectivity toward CO2RR. A series of MOx/Ag composites with the unique interface based on the DFT results were then introduced though a two-step approach. The as-obtained MOx/Ag catalysts boosted both the CO activity and selectivity at a relatively positive potential range, especially in the case of MnO2/Ag. The reduction current density on the MnO2/Ag catalyst can reach 4.3 mA cm-2 at -0.7 V (vs RHE), which is 21.5 times higher than that on pure Ag, and the overpotential of CO2 to CO (390 mV) possesses is much lower than that on pure Ag NPs (690 mV). This study proposes an effective design strategy to construct a metal-oxide interface for CO2RR based on the synergistic effect between metals and MOx.

We have developed a protocol for insertion of alkylidene carbenes into the B-H bonds of amine-borane adducts, enabling, for the first time, the construction of C(sp2)-B bonds by means of carbene-insertion reactions. Various acyclic and cyclic alkenyl borane-amine adducts were prepared from readily accessible starting materials in good to high yields and were subsequently subjected to a diverse array of functional group transformations. The unprecedented spiro B-N heterocycles prepared in this study have potential utility as building blocks for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that insertion of the alkylidene carbenes into the B-H bonds of the amine-borane adducts proceeds via a concerted process involving a three-membered-ring transition state.

Plant corrosion inhibitors in acid-pickling environment have the advantages of wide source, low cost and environmental protection. Pueraria lobata leaf extract (PLLE) was prepared by the combination of soaking method and ultrasonic extraction method. HPLC characterization found that PLLE contains some active ingredients, such as Puerarin, Biochanin, Daidzin and Daidzein. The corrosion inhibition of PLLE on 10# steel in 1.0 M HCl solution was studied by weight loss analysis, potentiodynamic polarization measurement, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning Kelvin probe test (SKP) and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that PLLE can effectively inhibit the corrosion of 10# steel in HCl, when the temperature is 25 °C, adding 0.5 g/L PLLE to 1.0 M HCl solution, the corrosion inhibition efficiency of 10# steel can reach up to 94.37%. The SKP results show that after adding PLLE to HCl, the surface potential difference and electrochemical non-uniformity of 10# steel are reduced, and the local corrosion tendency is significantly reduced. Polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicate that PLLE is a mixed corrosion inhibitor. The adsorption process is mainly chemisorption and obeyed the Langmuir model.

The scaffold structures formed by the incorporation of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanomaterials can be studied to improve the 3D matrix properties in the applications of bone regeneration. On the other hand, RGO has delayed the incorporation into the mixtures that were determined to generate scaffolds on using 3D printing because of its poor colloidal stability of particles and weak solubility in water. Moreover, to produce RGO, the graphene oxide (GO) was treated with hydrazine hydrate solution, which was well known as a reducing agent that is highly hazardous. To outcome these drawbacks, an unique eco-friendly method was established to gather scaffolds that were 3D printed by the incorporation of RGO. This was obtained using the Gallic acid induced in situ reduction of the GO already existing on the gelatin/chitosan/tricalcium phosphate scaffolds. Moreover, scaffolds also exhibited antibacterial activity without conceding osteoblasts’ cell proliferation and viability. Furthermore, the obtained scaffolds showed good osteoblasts proliferation and viability indicating their possibility for applications in bone fracture healing.

The Ski-interacting protein (SNW1) acts as a transcriptional co-regulator associated with mRNA splicing and transcription, cell cycle progression, acute and chronic inflammatory responses, however, its role involved in host antiviral innate immune responses remains to be explored. Here, for the first time, we demonstrated that SNW1 positively regulates the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and interferon (IFN) responses induced by influenza A virus (IAV) infection, and further inhibits virus replication by performing SNW1 depletion or overexpression approaches. Furthermore, we showed that reduced interferon beta (IFN-β) expression caused by interfering SNW1 impairs the activation of JAK-STAT pathway in response to IAV or poly I:C. Importantly, by interacting with IKKγ, the regulatory subunit of IκB kinase (IKK) complex, SNW1 promotes IAV-induced activation of NF-κB and phosphorylation of TBK1 kinase, leading to the increase of antiviral effectors interleukin 6 (IL-6), C-X-C motif chemokine 10 (CXCL10), IFN-β and myxovirus resistance protein 1 (MX1). Taken together, our study revealed that SNW1 is an important mediator of host defenses against IAV through the induction of pro-inflammatory factors and IFN signaling, providing novel insights in modulating innate immune responses to protect host from IAV infection.

A catalytic defluorinative hydroarylation of alkenes with polyfluoroarenes in the presence of dppbz-ligated Cu catalyst and silanes was presented for the first time. This method provides a straightforward and alternative avenue to synthetic important polyfluorinated arenes with readily available and bench-stable alkenes as latent nucleophiles, and therefore avoids conventional reliance on stoichiometric quantities of organometallics. This reaction proceeds under very mild conditions and exhibits good functional group compatibility and high level of regioselectivity. The synthetic potential of this method was further demonstrated by the gram-scale synthesis, and an array of experimental studies were also carried out to elaborate the probable mechanism.

Summary Given the lack of defining features in the clinical manifestations and radiographic findings for children with mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP), quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) has become a useful diagnostic method. This study was performed to explore the relationship between the qPCR findings, clinical symptoms, and inflammatory markers in children with MPP. Four hundred children with MPP have been enrolled in this retrospective analysis. All clinical and analytical information, including mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) PCR results, has been collected. Based on the PCR results, the patients were divided into groups with load values (copy number) < 105 (54 cases), ≥105 and 108 (49 cases). The clinical features (including symptoms and signs) and inflammatory indicators were compared among the groups. The incidence of high fever (above 39°C), thermal peak during the entire hospitalization period, fever duration, days of hospitalization, and plasma lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were statistically correlated with the MP PCR load value in children with MPP. The analysis of relevance degree showed the correlative order as a thermal peak of hospitalization > duration of fever > period of hospitalization > LDH value > C-reactive protein value. The host immune response was significantly greater in the complication group than in the non-complication group.

Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Thunb.) Makino is a popular functional food and is also used as an important medicinal plant in China. Gypenoside, the main active constituent in G. pentaphyllum (Thunb.) Makino, belongs to dammarane-type triterpenoid saponins. Due to its high molecular weight and high polarity, it is difficult to obtain complete compound information for gypenoside extracts via mass spectrometry experiments. In this study, an automated targeted data postprocessing strategy called Compound MSn Database (ComMSnDB) was designed and established to elucidate compounds in gypenoside extracts based on ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS/MS). As a result, 18 types of and 199 main saponin constituents, including 47 potential novel compounds, were tentatively identified from different habitats. At the same time, 15 gypenoside standard compounds were used to verify the feasibility of the ComMSnDB strategy. These results demonstrated that ComMSnDB offers practical value for quick, automated, and effective compound identification.

Importance Age-related cataract is the leading cause of blindness worldwide. The pathological mechanisms causing this disease remain elusive. Background To examine the involvement of uric acid (UA) in the pathogenesis of posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC). Design Retrospective study and experimental investigation. Participants A total of 180 patients with PSC or non-PSC were included. Methods Samples obtained from the patients were used to analyse content of UA and for histochemical examinations. The effects of UA on human lens epithelial cells were also investigated. Main outcome measures Aqueous humour UA and urate deposits. Results The results showed a significant increase of aqueous humour UA in patients with PSC. After adjustment for potential confounders, elevated aqueous humour UA (odds ratio [OR] = 1.45) showed a stronger association with PSC than serum UA (OR = 1.10). Gomori methenamine silver staining revealed in PSC an intense deposit of urates in the lens fibres in equatorial regions, and in subcapsular fibres in posterior regions of the lens. Such staining was not detected in the lens with non-PSC. Treatment with UA-induced senescence and apoptosis in human lens epithelial cells in a dose dependent manner. Our results suggest that the elevated level of UA in aqueous humour causes a deposition of urates in human lens epithelium, which could possibly lead to dysfunction of these cells that generates opacification in PSC. Conclusions and relevance These findings indicate the local action of excessive UA in the pathogenesis of PSC. Control of serum UA level could delay the progression of PSC.

Single atom catalysts (SACs) have recently attracted great attention in heterogeneous catalysis and have been regarded as ideal models for investigating the strong interaction between metal and support. Despite the huge progress over the past decade, the deep understanding on the structure-performance correlation of SACs at a single atom level still remains to be a great challenge. In this study, we demonstrate that the variation in the coordination number of the Pt single atom can significantly promote the propylene selectivity during propyne semihydrogenation (PSH) for the first time. Specifically, the propylene selectivity greatly increases from 65.4% to 94.1% as the coordination number of Pt-O increases from ∼3.4 to ∼5, whereas the variation in the coordination number of Pt-O slightly influences the turnover frequency values of SACs. We anticipate that the present work may deepen the understanding on the structure-performance of SACs and also promote the fundamental research in single atom catalysis.

The utilization of structural water in chemical self-assembly has not only effectively eliminated the negative influences of solvents from solutions or gels but has also provided new insight into the fabrication of new materials in bulk. However, up to now, supramolecular polymerization triggered by structural water has been dominated more by serendipity than rational design. After carefully analyzing the chemical structures of artificial monomers and gaining a deep understanding of the water-triggered assembly process, we report herein the bulk formation of polymeric materials from water and low-molecular weight monomers by rational design instead of serendipity.

Molecularly imprinting polymers (MIPs), as artificial antibodies with high recognition selectivity to template molecules, are widely used in various biosensors. To improve further the selectivity of MIPs-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensors, we report a differential strategy using non-imprinted polymers (NIPs) as the reference. In a proof-to-concept example for the determination of dopamine (DA), MIPs and NIPs membranes were fabricated by electrochemical polymerization of polypyrrole membranes on the surface of graphene quantum dots (GQDs)/TiO2 nanotubes (NTs). The photocurrent difference between the two PEC cells, MIPs@GQDs/TiO2 NTs−Pt and NIPs@GQDs/TiO2 NTs−Pt, was measured as the signal. As the non-specific adsorption of non-template molecules on the outside surface of MIPs and NIPs membranes is similar, the anti-interference ability for the determination of DA is much improved by using differential strategy. In the normal and differential PEC measurement models, 10.0 μM ascorbic acid is equivalent to 3.12 and 0.40 μM DA, respectively. Further, the smaller specific surface area in NIPs membrane was compensated by using a weight factor to correct the residual interference in a modified differential model. By using 10.0 μM ascorbic acid as the balance point, the presence of 10.0 μM H2O2, glutathione, uric acid or glucose is equivalent only to 0.090, 0.061,0.11 or 0.041 μM of DA, respectively, which are about 3–7% of their interference levels in the normal photocurrent model. The differential PEC method was applied in the determination of DA in serum samples in the linear range of 0.05–12.5 μM, with the detection limit of 0.018 μM.

Background: Iodine is important in both thyroid function and human metabolism. Studies have explored the effect of iodine on metabolic disorders through thyroid function. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between iodine status and metabolic disorders. Methods: Data were obtained from the TIDE program, including 51795 subjects aged ≥18 years. The prevalence of metabolic disorders and its related components were calculated based on the level of urinary iodine concentrations (UICs) using the chi-square method. To further explore whether prevalence was associated with UIC, quadratic and UIC-stratified logistic regression models were used. Findings: The prevalence of metabolic disorders presented as a U-shaped curve as the UICs change with a lower prevalence of 76% at a UIC of 300-499 µg/L. After adjusting for confounding factors, UIC of 300-499 µg/L was found to be a protective factor for metabolic disorders [OR=0·857, 95%CI (0·796-0·922)] and hypertension. A UIC of 300-799 µg/L was found to be protective against the occurrence of metabolic syndrome (MetS), impaired fasting glucose (IFG). 500-799 µg/L was protective against the occurrence of prediabetes, UIC ≥ µg/L was found to be protective against the occurrence of dyslipidemia. The electrochemical reduction of CO2 and H2O to syngas, a widely used precursor for chemical synthesis, has attracted increased attention. However, producing syngas over a wide range of CO:H2 ratios is important for its potential application. Herein, a facile method using an anodic oxidizing zinc plate has been developed to obtain lattice-dislocated ZnO, which exhibited higher faradaic efficiencies (above 90%) of syngas than that of ZnO without lattice dislocation. Moreover, the ratio of CO to H2 can be regulated in a wide range from 0.28 to 2.11 by applying different electrolyzing potentials, which is applicable to the synthesis of various chemicals. With density functional theory calculations, we conclude that the lattice dislocation defects in ZnO promote the electroreduction of CO2. In addition, stability and electrochemical noise tests show that lattice-dislocated ZnO can withstand long-term operation due to its effective corrosion resistance.

The widespread application of direct ethanol fuel cells is hampered due to the low activity, high cost and poor operation durability of electrocatalysts for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). Herein, we report a one-pot synthetic method to synthesize PdPb3 nanochains with well-defined shape, size and composition via a solution-phase reduction method. The morphology, composition distribution and structure characteristics of PdPb3 nanochains were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Thanks to the unique structure, the as-obtained PdPb3 nanochains can manifest much higher mass activity (2523 mA·mg−1) and higher operation durability than commercial Pd/C (1272 mA·mg−1) during the EOR measurements. More importantly, further CO-stripping measurements indicate that the incorporation of Pb species could favor the oxidative removal of CO intermediates on the Pd electrode at the negative potential and enhance the EOR activity and stability, making it possible to develop highly active and durable electrocatalysts.
