Dielectric polymer composites with conducting fillers would have great potential for diverse applications if their severe leakage loss could be addressed. In this regard, ternary composites using both ceramic and conducting materials as fillers might be an enabler for high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss. Herein, ternary composites with both Ti3C2Tx MXene conducting nanosheets and CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) dielectric particles embedded in silicone rubber were studied. It was found that a ternary composite with 1.2 wt% (0.40 vol%) Ti3C2Tx MXene and 12 wt% (2.58 vol%) CCTO could provide an overall superior performance that include a high dielectric constant of 8.8, low dielectric loss of less than 0.0015, good thermal stability up to 450 °C, and excellent mechanical properties with tensile strength of 569 kPa, elastic module of 523 kPa and elongation at break of 333%. The outstanding performance is attributed to the improved uniform dispersion and good interfacial compatibility of mixed fillers in the polymer matrix, suggesting ternary composites might be a better option over their binary counterparts in preparing high performance dielectric composites.

Tungsten is a naturally occurring transition element used in a broad range of applications. As a result of its extensive use, we are increasingly exposed to tungsten from our environment, including potable water, since tungsten can become bioaccessible in ground sources. The kidneys are particularly susceptible to tungsten exposure as this is the main site for tungsten excretion. In this study, we investigated the prolonged effects of tungsten on the kidneys and how this may impact injury and function. When mice were exposed to tungsten in their drinking water for 1 mo, kidney function had not significantly changed. Following 3-mo exposure, mice were presented with deterioration in kidney function as determined by serum and urine creatinine levels. During 3 mo of tungsten exposure, murine kidneys demonstrated significant increases in the myofibroblast marker α-smooth muscle actin (αSMA) and extracellular matrix products: fibronectin, collagen, and matricellular proteins. In addition, Masson’s trichrome and hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining revealed an increase in fibrotic tissue and vacuolization of tubular epithelial cells, respectively, from kidneys of tungsten-treated mice, indicative of renal injury. In vitro treatment of kidney fibroblasts with tungsten led to increased proliferation and upregulation of transforming growth factor β1 (TGFβ1), which was consistent with the appearance of fibroblast-to-myofibroblast transition (FMT) markers. Our data suggest that continuous exposure to tungsten impairs kidney function that may lead to the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Under the guidance of a symmetry-breaking and π-bridge-extending strategy, three asymmetric and symmetric non-fullerene acceptors (L1, L2, and L3) with DA′D core units and two 2-(5,6-difluoro-3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-ylidene)malononitrile electron-withdrawing units (A) have been designed and synthesized via changing the alkoxy-substituted thiophene bridge unit. The asymmetric A–DA′D–π-A-type non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) L2 displays much improved solubility and a slightly larger molar absorption coefficient than its symmetric counterparts (L1 and L3). In addition, blend film based on the asymmetric NFA L2 shows suitable nanoscale phase morphology and much higher and more balanced hole and electron mobilities. Hence, compared with L1- and L3-based organic solar cells (OSCs), optimal L2-based devices can deliver a high power-conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.06% with simultaneously enhanced current density and fill factor values. Our study indicates that a combined symmetry-breaking and π-bridge-extending strategy is powerful for the design of high-performance NFAs.

Exploiting high-performance, low-cost, and robust bifunctional catalysts toward electrochemical water splitting is of great importance, but remains challenging.

It is reported that the cis/trans conformation change of the peptide hormone oxytocin plays an important role in its receptors and activation and the cis conformation does not lead to antagonistic activity. Motivated by recent experiments and theories, the quasi-static amide-I 2D IR spectra of oxytocin are investigated using DFT/B3LYP (D3)/6-31G (d, p) in combination with the isotope labeling method under different electric fields. The theoretical amide-I IR spectra and bond length of the disulfide bond are consistent with the experimental values, which indicates that the theoretical modes are reasonable. Our theoretical results demonstrate that the oxytocin conformation is transformed from the cis conformation to the trans conformation with the change of the direction of the electric field, which is confirmed by the distance of the backbone carbonyl oxygen of Cys6 and Pro7, the Ramachandran plot of Cys6 and Pro7, the dihedral angle of Cβ-S-S-Cβ, and the rmsd of the oxytocin backbone. Moreover, the trans conformation as the result of the turn in the vicinity of Pro7 has a tighter secondary spatial structure than the cis conformation, including stronger hydrogen bonds, longer γ-turn geometry involving five amino acids, and a more stable disulfide bond. Our work provides new insights into the relationship between the conformation, the activation of the peptide hormone oxytocin, and the electric fields.

G-quadruplex is an essential element in gene transcription that serves as a promising drug target. Guanine-vacancy-bearing G-quadruplex (GVBQ) is a newly identified G-quadruplex that has distinct structural features from the canonical G-quadruplex. Potential GVBQ-forming motifs are widely distributed in gene promoter regions. However, whether GVBQ can form in genomic DNA and be an effective target for manipulating gene expression is unknown. Using photo-crosslinking, dimethyl sulfate footprinting, exonuclease digestion and in vitro transcription, we demonstrated the formation of a GVBQ in the G-rich nuclease hypersensitivity element within the human PDGFR-β gene promoter region in both single-stranded and double-stranded DNA. The formation of GVBQ in dsDNA could be induced by negative supercoiling created by downstream transcription. We also found that the PDGFR-β GVBQ was specifically recognized and stabilized by a new synthetic porphyrin guanine conjugate (mPG). Targeting the PDGFR-β GVBQ in human cancer cells using the mPG could specifically alter PDGFR-β gene expression. Our work illustrates that targeting GVBQ with mPG in human cells can regulate the expression level of a specific gene, thus indicating a novel strategy for drug development.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is one of the typical reactive sulfur species, which exhibits an important role in regulating both physiological and pathological processes. Recent studies indicate that H2S also serves as a key signaling molecule in a broad range of regulatory processes in plants. However, in situ imaging and detection of the levels of H2S in plant tissues remains a challenge. In this work, a NIR fluorescent probe (HBTP-H2S) was synthesized to achieve H2S imaging in living plant tissues. HBTP-H2S exhibited high sensitivity toward H2S with a large Stokes shift (250 nm). HBTP-H2S could be applied to HeLa cells to detect the fluctuation of endogenous H2S levels in response to physiological stimulations. Importantly, HBTP-H2S was utilized for direct H2S imaging of rice roots and revealed the upregulation of H2S signaling in response to aluminum ions and flooding stresses. Our work thus provides a new tool to investigate H2S-involved signal interaction and protective resistance of crops under environmental stresses.

Regulatory T cell (Treg) stability is necessary for the proper control of immune activity and tissue homeostasis. However, it remains unclear whether Treg stability must be continually reinforced or is established during development under physiological conditions. Foxp3 has been characterized as a central mediator of the genetic program that governs Treg stability. Here, we demonstrate that to maintain Foxp3 protein expression, Tregs require cell-to-cell contact, which is mediated by the CD147-CD98 interaction. As Tregs are produced, CD147, which is expressed on their surface, is stimulated by CD98, which is widely expressed in the physiological environment. As a result, CD147’s intracellular domain binds to CDK2 and retains it near the membrane, leading to Foxp3 dephosphorylation and the prevention of Foxp3 degradation. In addition, the optimal distribution of Foxp3+ Tregs under both pathological and physiological conditions depends on CD98 expression. Thus, our study provides direct evidence that Foxp3-dependent Treg stability is reinforced in the periphery by the interaction between CD147 and CD98 in the surrounding environment. More importantly, Tregs with high CD147 expression effectively inhibit inflammatory responses and maintain Foxp3 stability, which has guiding significance for the application of Tregs in immunotherapy.

Ralstonia solanacearum RSc0454 is predicted as a FAD-linked oxidase based on protein homologies, while it contains distinct domains of lactate dehydrogenase and succinate dehydrogenase. A previous study demonstrated that RSc0454 exhibits lactate dehydrogenase activity using pyruvate and NADH as substrates, and is essential for pathogenicity of R. solanacearum. Here, we genetically characterized involvement of RSc0454 on bacterial growth and expression of genes for the type III secretion system (T3SS, a pathogenicity determinant) in R. solanacearum. The RSc0454 mutant grew normally in rich medium but grew faintly in host plants, and failed to grow in minimal medium. Supplementary succinate but not lactate could substantially restore some phenotypes of RSc0454 mutants, including faint growth in host plants, diminished growth in the minimal medium, and lost pathogenicity toward host plants. Expression of T3SS genes is directly controlled by a master regulator, HrpB, and hrpB expression is positively regulated by HrpG and PrhG in parallel ways. Deletion of RSc0454 substantially reduced expression levels of hrpB and T3SS both in vitro and in planta. Moreover, RSc0454 is revealed to be required for the T3SS expression via HrpG and PrhG, although through some novel pathway, and impaired expression of these genes was not due to growth deficiency of RSc0454 mutants. RSc0454 is suggested to be important for redox balance inside cells, and supplementary NADH partially restored diminished growth of the RSc0454 mutant in the minimal medium only in the presence of succinate at some moderate concentrations, indicating that the unbalanced redox in the RSc0454 mutant might be responsible for its diminished growth in the minimal medium. Taken together, these results provide novel insights into the understanding of various biological functions of this FAD-linked oxidase RSc0454 and involvement of the redox balance on expression of the T3SS in R. solanacearum. Supercapacitors possessing fast-charging characteristics and long lifespan are becoming increasingly important for powering portable and smart energy storage devices, and combining capacitive and battery-type materials into an integrated device is an effective method for increasing the overall performance of capacitors. Silicene is being designed as a cathode for the development of enhanced capacitance and ultra-cycle stable zinc-ion hybrid capacitors. Possessing a maximum areal capacity of 14 mF cm-2, a maximum power density of 9 mW cm-2, capacitance retention of 112% even after 10 000 cycles, and an unexpectedly high energy density of 23 mJ cm-2, this achievement of the zinc-ion hybrid capacitor would be superior to that of previously reported silicon-based supercapacitors. The DFT calculations further reveal that Zn ions dominate the capacitive behavior of the silicene electrode. The support association between silicene and zinc-ion hybrid capacitors so that they can take advantage of each other's strengths, which takes electrochemical energy technology to a stage, offering a straightforward proposal for integration and implementation of silicon-based materials.

In fish, type I IFNs are classified into three groups, i.e. Group I, Group II and Group III, which are further divided into seven subgroups according to the number of conservative cysteines, phylogenetic relationship, and probably their receptor complexes. In the present study, four type I IFNs and four cytokine receptor family B members (CRFBs) were identified in the Asian arowana, Scleropages formosus, an ancient species in the Osteoglossomorpha with commercial and conservation values. According to multiple sequence alignment and phylogenetic relationship, the four type I IFNs are named as IFNa1, IFNa2, IFNb and IFNc, with the former two belonging to Group I, and the latter two to Group II. The four receptors are named as CRFB1, CRFB2, CRFB5a and CRFB5b. The IFNs and their possible receptor genes are widely expressed in examined organs/tissues, and are induced following the stimulation of polyinosinic polycytidylic acid (polyI:C) in vivo. It was found that IFNa1, IFNa2, IFNb and IFNc use preferentially the receptor complexes, CRFB1 and CRFB5b, CRFB1 and CRFB5b, CRFB2 and CRFB5a, and CRFB2 and CRFB5b, respectively, indicating the evolutionary diversification in the interaction of type I IFNs and their receptors in this ancient fish species, S. formosus.

This study synthesized a facile and high sensitive fluorescent probe based on sulfur-doped carbon dots (S-CDs) using a one-step microwave irradiation method. The probe exhibited a strong blue emission and a high quantum yield (QY) of 36.40%. In the detection, the presence of trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) strongly quenched the PL intensity of S-CDs by the inner filter effect (IFE) quenching mechanism of Cr(III) on the S-CDs. The S-CDs exhibited good sensitivity to turn-off Cr(III) detection with a linear range concentration of 0–45 μM and a detection limit of 0.17 μM. Furthermore, the proposed method has been successfully applied for Cr(III) detection in natural water samples with the 93.68–106.20% recoveries.

Seed-assisted low alkalinity gel system was developed to explore the organic-free synthesis of MOR zeolite. MOR nanoassemblies with Si/Al ratio (SAR) up to 9.4 and high solid yield (84–94%) were successfully obtained under controlled low alkalinity conditions. Characterization results demonstrate that the acid strength increases in parallel with the SAR, while the total acid amount and the proton distribution in the main channels and the side pockets are similar for the samples. The proton distribution in the H-MOR is not straightforwardly related to the Na+ distribution in the as-synthesized MOR, implying the transfer of the protons among the oxygen sites of framework T atom. Relative to low-silica samples I-5.3 and I-7.4, sample I-9.4 displays the best mass transfer performance and accessibility of the acid sites by pyridine due to its relatively low Al density and mild dealumination degree. Correspondingly, sample I-9.4 (pyridine-modified catalyst) shows the best activity with ca. 100% selectivity of methyl acetate (MAc) in the DME carbonylation reaction. The high steady MAc yield (6.8 mmol/g/h) over sample I-9.4 suggests the promising application of MOR nanoassemblies synthesized by this economical organic-free strategy

Gastric cancer (GC) is the third leading cause of cancer-associated mortality globally. Although the diagnosis and therapeutic strategies for GC have improved, the prognosis for advanced gastric cancer (AGC) remains poor. Hence, the present study sought to design a zebrafish model established by microinjecting human MGC-803 GC cell line for studying personalized molecular-targeted cancer therapy. Apatinib, a novel molecular-targeted agent, was evaluated for its in vivo efficacy through a comparison among the control groups (no treatment) and subject groups (treatment). Newly formed vessel length and tumor volume were measured in all of the groups for further study. The length of newly formed vessels was obviously shortened after apatinib treatment in the zebrafish model established in this study. Meanwhile, apatinib exhibited the best antitumor growth effect with dose and time dependence by suppressing AKT/GSK3α/β signaling, which may be the mechanism underlying the profound antitumor clinical effect of apatinib. The data indicated that apatinib therapy exerts an anti-angiogenesis effect and it can be recommended as a proper antitumor growth therapy for GC patients. Additionally, zebrafish models could be designed as a potential practical tool to explore new anti-GC cancer drugs.

The corrosion evolution of steel disposal container largely depends on the evolution of surrounding bentonite environment in the long-term geological disposal of high-level radioactive wastes. This study focused on the influence of the deteriorated bentonite sediments on the corrosion behavior of NiCu low alloy steel in the top supernatant and bottom slurry formed by Gaomiaozi bentonite and 0.05 M NaHCO3 + 0.1 M NaCl + 0.1 M Na2SO4 solution. In the top supernatant, the cathodic process of the steel corrosion was transformed from the reduction in oxygen to the reduction in ferric corrosion products with time as same as that in the blank solution. While in the bottom bentonite slurry, the cathodic process always maintained as the hydrogen evolution reaction due to the coverage of more bentonite sediments. Meanwhile, the corrosion rate of NiCu steel was obviously decreased. In addition, the localized corrosion tendency of the steel could also be reduced by the large amount of deteriorated bentonite sediments.

A significant number of sequences in the human genome form noncanonical G-quadruplexes (G4s) with bulges or a guanine vacancy. Here, we systematically characterized the mechanical stability of parallel-stranded G4s with a one to seven nucleotides bulge at various positions. Our results show that G4-forming sequences with a bulge form multiple conformations, including fully-folded G4 with high mechanical stability (unfolding forces > 40 pN), partially-folded intermediates (unfolding forces < 40 pN). The folding probability and folded populations strongly depend on the positions and lengths of the bulge. By combining a single-molecule unfolding assay, dimethyl sulfate (DMS) footprinting, and a guanine-peptide conjugate that selectively stabilizes guanine-vacancy-bearing G-quadruplexes (GVBQs), we identified that GVBQs are the major intermediates of G4s with a bulge near the 5′ or 3′ ends. The existence of multiple structures may induce different regulatory functions in many biological processes. This study also demonstrates a new strategy for selectively stabilizing the intermediates of bulged G4s to modulate their functions.

Groups A and C were classified as NIBUT grade 1 (NIBUTf of 6– 9 s and NIBUTav of 8– 13 s), and groups B and D were classified as NIBUT grade 2 (NIBUTf of < 5 s and NIBUTav of ≤ 7 s). Groups A and B received 0.1% sodium hyaluronate eye drops, and groups C and D received 0.3% sodium hyaluronate eye drops.Results: In group A, there was a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the surface regularity index (SRI) and the surface asymmetry index (SAI) measured 1 s after eye drop administration. In group B, there was a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in the SRI and the SAI measured 1 s and 5 and 10 min after eye drop administration. In group C, there was a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the astigmatism degree, SRI, SAI, and irregular astigmatism index (IAI) measured 1 s after eye drop administration. There was a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in potential visual acuity (PVA). In group D, there was a significant increase in the IAI and Q value (parameters of aspheric characteristics of cornea, corneal Q value) measured 1 s after eye drop administration as well as a significant decrease in PVA (p < 0.05).Conclusion: The use of 0.1% sodium hyaluronate eye drops in patients with dry eye aid the temporary recovery of corneal surface regularity and the stability of tear film. The 0.1% sodium hyaluronate had a significant effect for the first 10 min after treatment.Keywords: dry eye, corneal topography, corneal surface regularity, tear film, sodium hyaluronate

The application of solid polymer electrolytes for Li metal batteries (LMBs) is hindered by the Li/electrolyte interface instability and poor mechanical strength. Herein, a flexible composite solid electrolyte with a cross-linked double-network structure of inorganic particles and polymer was constructed by an in situ gel-sol method. The as-prepared electrolyte promoted the formation of a stable solid electrolyte interface on the Li metal surface and suppressed the formation of Li dendrites more than pure polymer electrolytes. Particularly, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results demonstrated the beneficial effect of inorganic particles for suppressing the side reactions between the Li metal and polymer. Additionally, the as-prepared electrolyte exhibited a reduction of polymer crystallinity, which can facilitate Li+ transport by weaking the interactions between Li+ and the polymer chains. The Li|Li symmetric batteries were stabilized to maintain successive electrodeposition over 1400 h of the plating/stripping process. Furthermore, the Li|LiFePO4 batteries displayed excellent cycling performance at a rate of 0.3 C, revealing tremendous potential in promoting the large-scale application of future LMBs.

The glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor is a validated drug target for metabolic disorders. Ago-allosteric modulators are capable of acting both as agonists on their own and as efficacy enhancers of orthosteric ligands. However, the molecular details of ago-allosterism remain elusive. Here, we report three cryo-electron microscopy structures of GLP-1R bound to (i) compound 2 (an ago-allosteric modulator); (ii) compound 2 and GLP-1; and (iii) compound 2 and LY3502970 (a small molecule agonist), all in complex with heterotrimeric Gs. The structures reveal that compound 2 is covalently bonded to C347 at the cytoplasmic end of TM6 and triggers its outward movement in cooperation with the ECD whose N terminus penetrates into the GLP-1 binding site. This allows compound 2 to execute positive allosteric modulation through enhancement of both agonist binding and G protein coupling. Our findings offer insights into the structural basis of ago-allosterism at GLP-1R and may aid the design of better therapeutics., The glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor is a key regulator of glucose homeostasis and a drug target for type 2 diabetes but available GLP-1R agonists are suboptimal due to several side-effects. Here authors report the cryo-EM structure of GLP-1R bound to an ago-allosteric modulator in complex with heterotrimeric Gs which offers insights into the molecular details of ago-allosterism.

Pediatric lymphoma is a kind of malignant tumor with high mortality. The complexity of pediatric lymphoma shows a great challenge for effective diagnosis and treatment. In order to meet the challenge, the combination of pseudotargeted and targeted metabolomics was used to analyze the serum metabolites in pediatric lymphoma patients and healthy controls for discovering the metabolites related to pediatric lymphoma. The serum samples were obtained from the treatment group ( n = 43 ), the control group ( n = 26 ), and the patients group ( n = 18 ). A total of 17 serum metabolites, including carnitine, leucine, creatine, urea, (6Z,9Z,12Z)-octadecatrienoic acid, linoleate, octadecenoic acid, L-palmitoylcarnitine, hexadecanoic acid, tetradecanoic acid, (9Z)-hexadecenoic acid, uric acid, glucose, 1-methylnicotinamide, hypoxanthine, L-glutamine, and taurine, were found to be related to pediatric lymphoma. They could provide a scientific diagnostic basis and therapeutic target for pediatric lymphoma and elucidate the mechanism of pediatric lymphoma.

Sepsis is a life‐threatening organ dysfunction syndrome, and liver is a susceptible target organ in sepsis, because the activation of inflammatory pathways contributes to septic liver injury. Oxidative stress has been documented to participate in septic liver injury, because it not only directly induces oxidative genotoxicity, but also exacerbates inflammatory pathways to potentiate damage of liver. Therefore, to ameliorate oxidative stress is promising for protecting liver in sepsis. Wogonin is the compound extracted from the medicinal plant Scutellaria baicalensis Geogi and was found to exert therapeutic effects in multiple inflammatory diseases via alleviation of oxidative stress. However, whether wogonin is able to mitigate septic liver injury remains unknown. Herein, we firstly proved that wogonin treatment could improve survival of mice with lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‐ or caecal ligation and puncture (CLP)‐induced sepsis, together with restoration of reduced body temperature and respiratory rate, and suppression of several pro‐inflammatory cytokines in circulation. Then, we found that wogonin effectively alleviated liver injury via potentiation of the anti‐oxidative capacity. To be specific, wogonin activated Nrf2 thereby promoting expressions of anti‐oxidative enzymes including NQO‐1, GST, HO‐1, SOD1 and SOD2 in hepatocytes. Moreover, wogonin‐induced Nrf2 activation could suppress NF‐κB‐regulated up‐regulation of pro‐inflammatory cytokines. Ultimately, we provided in vivo evidence that wogonin activated Nrf2 signalling, potentiated anti‐oxidative enzymes and inhibited NF‐κB‐regulated pro‐inflammatory signalling. Taken together, this study demonstrates that wogonin can be the potential therapeutic agent for alleviating liver injury in sepsis by simultaneously ameliorating oxidative stress and inflammatory response through the activation of Nrf2.

Piezoelectric materials play a key role in various kinds of modern electronic devices. High Curie temperature piezoelectric materials are required for piezoelectric sensors under critical conditions for nuclear power plants, automotive, aeronautic, and aerospace applications. These piezoelectric sensors usually withstand high temperature of 500°C or higher. To meet the requirements of these applications, piezoelectric materials must possess high piezoelectric performance and high electrical resistivity as well as high Curie temperature. The Aurivillius-type bismuth layer-structured ferroelectrics (BLSFs) are the most promising high-temperature piezoelectric materials because of their very high Curie temperature ( T c). Structurally, the BLSF compounds are composed of fluorite-like (Bi2O2)2+ layers and perovskite-like (A m −1B m O3 m +1)2− blocks, which arrange along the c axis alternately and regularly. The general formula is (Bi2O2)2+(A m −1B m O3 m +1)2−, where A is a mono-, di-, or trivalent metallic ion (or their combination) suited to dodecahedral coordination; B is a transition metallic ion suited to octahedral coordination, and m is the number of BO6 octahedral in the perovskite-like blocks and varies from 1 to 4. In this paper, the crystal structure, piezoelectric properties (herein piezoelectric constant d 33 value), and Curie temperature ( T c) of prototype BLSF ceramics have been summarized, and the summarized results indicate that the piezoelectric properties of high T c BLSF compounds are very low. The prototype BLSF ceramics with T c of >700°C exhibit low piezoelectric d 33 value of no more than 10 pC/N, and the prototype BLSF ceramics with T c of >900°C exhibit low piezoelectric d 33 value of no more than 5 pC/N. Calcium bismuth niobate, CaBi2Nb2O9 (CBN), was firstly found and synthesized by Sweden scientist Aurivillius B, in 1949. But until 2005, the investigations on the piezoelectric properties of CBN were firstly reported by Yan H X and Reece M J. After that, the piezoelectric properties of CBN have attracted much attention. The compound CBN has a very high Curie temperature T c of ~940°C, and it is considered to be potential material as piezoelectric sensors and other electronic components for high-temperature applications. However, its particular bismuth layer-structured crystal structure restricts the rotation of the spontaneous polarization ( P s) in the two-dimensional orientation ( a - b plane), and large coercive field ( E c) makes the material difficult to be poled sufficiently. The prototype CBN ceramic exhibits very low piezoelectric performance, with low piezoelectric d 33 value of 5 pC/N. In this paper, the piezoelectric properties of bismuth layer-structure ferroelectric calcium bismuth niobate (CaBi2Nb2O9) piezoelectric ceramics have been summarized. The results indicate that A-site ions substitution is more effective than B-site ions substitution to enhance the piezoelectric properties of CaBi2Nb2O9 ceramics, and A-site and B-site ions co-substitution is more desirable to optimize the piezoelectric performance. The piezoelectric d 33 can be promoted to >16 pC/N by compositions adjusting, while the Curie temperature remains higher than 900°C. Texture technologies, such as templated grain growth (TGG) and spark plasma sintering, have been introduced, and they are good methods to further enhance the piezoelectric performance of CaBi2Nb2O9 ceramics. The piezoelectric d 33 can be promoted to higher than 20 pC/N by texture technologies. Overall, the CaBi2Nb2O9 ceramics are promising materials for high-temperature piezoelectric sensor applications. Finally, perspectives on how to further enhance the piezoelectric performance of CaBi2Nb2O9 ceramics are presented.

Background Normoalbuminuric diabetic kidney disease (NADKD) is a newly defined DKD, the clinical features and pathogenesis for which are still being understood. This study aimed to investigate the features and risk factors for NADKD in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted. The related clinical and laboratory data of patients with T2DM hospitalized between August 2012 and January 2020 were collected for statistical analysis. We classified the patients with T2DM into four groups on the basis of the presence or absence of albuminuria and reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Analysis of variance, the Kruskal–Wallis test, and the chi-square test were used to compare the groups. Binary logistic regression analyses with a forward stepwise method were performed to explore the risk factors for renal dysfunction in hospitalized patients with normoalbuminuric T2DM. Results Among the 1620 patients evaluated, 500 (30.9%) had DKD, of which 9% had NADKD. The prevalence of stroke, cardiovascular events, carotid plaque, and peripheral arterial disease in NADKD was significantly higher than in a non-DKD control group (normoalbuminuric T2DM patients with eGFR of ≥60 ml/min/1.73 m2). Regression analyses revealed that three significant independent factors were associated with NADKD: age (OR = 1.089, confidence interval [CI] 95% [1.055–1.123], p p = 0.011), and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c; OR = 0.839, CI 95% [0.716–0.983], p = 0.03). Conclusions NADKD is mainly associated with macrovascular rather than microvascular complications. NADKD is more common in patients with normoalbuminuric T2DM with older age, previous use of RASIs, and good glycemic control.

Layered transition metal oxides are ideal Na+/K+ host materials due to their high theoretical capacities and appropriate working potentials, and the pursuit of cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternatives with high energy density and structural stability has remained a hot topic. Herein, we design and synthesize a low-cost and zero-strain cathode material, P3-type K0.4Fe0.1Mn0.8Ti0.1O2, which demonstrates superior properties for both potassium and sodium storage. The cathode delivers a reversible potassium storage capacity of 117 mA h g-1 at 20 mA g-1 and a fast rate capability of 71 mA h g-1 at 1000 mA g-1. In situ X-ray diffraction reveals a solid-solution transition with a negligible volume change of 0.5% upon K+ insertion/deinsertion that ensures long cycling stability over 300 cycles. When the material is employed for sodium storage, a spontaneous ion-exchange process with Na+-containing electrolytes occurs. Thanks to the positive effects of the remaining K+ ions that protect the layered structure from collapse as well as expand the interlayer structure, and the resulting K0.12Na0.28Fe0.1Mn0.8Ti0.1O2 demonstrates a high sodium storage capacity of 160 mA h g-1 and superior cycling stability with capacity retention of 81% after 300 cycles as well as fast kinetics.

Saline-alkali stress is major stress that severely reduces plant growth and productivity, it is necessary to make clear whether exogenous 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) can improve the salt-alkali resistance of soybean (Glycine max) by affecting its DNA methylation. In this study, the effects of EBR on soybean adaptation to saline-alkali stress, genomic DNA methylation level and pattern changes in saline-alkali-stressed leaf and root with or without EBR treatment were compared using methylation-sensitive amplified polymorphism (MSAP). In the results, saline-alkali stress increased DNA methylation levels in leaf and root, with higher respective hemi-methylation and global methylation rates observed in leaf (6.22, 22.24%) than root (5.72, 21.76%). EBR application reduced leaf and root DNA methylation levels, with leaf hemi-methylation rate (6.15%) exceeding that of root (4.25%) and leaf global methylation rate (21.79%) below that of root (22.51%). There were distinct DNA remethylation and demethylation variations across different tissues and treatments, demethylation in leaves was dominant. Meanwhile, untreated saline-alkali-stressed roots exhibited major demethylation-based variations, while remethylation variations predominated post-treatment. Under saline-alkali stress, root remethylation and demethylation rates (6.17, 7.55%, respectively) both exceeded respective leaf rates (5.18 and 7.46%); however, post-EBR treatment, root methylation rate (6.45%) exceeded leaf rate (5.38%), while root demethylation rate (6.13%) fell below leaf rate (6.94%). In conclusion, exogenous EBR application to saline-alkali-stressed soybean can influence leaf and root genomic DNA methylation levels and patterns via distinct tissue-specific methylation mechanisms.

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder that can lead to cognitive dysfunction. The hippocampus plays an important role in the cognitive function. Research has identified correlations between hippocampal impairment and diabetes, yet their intermediate remains unclear. Soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) is an enzyme that degrades epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs), which have multiple protective effects by suppressing inflammation, apoptosis and oxidative stress. In this study, under diabetic conditions both hippocampal injury and cognitive decline are accompanied by upregulation of sEH. Moreover, the sEH inhibitor trans-4-[4-(3-adamantan-1-y1-ureido)-cyclohexyloxy]-benzoic acid (t-AUCB) prevents cognitive dysfunction and decreased ROS accumulation and apoptosis in the diabetic hippocampus. t-AUCB treatment restored neuronal synaptic plasticity by restoring the expression of the postsynaptic proteins Postsynaptic density protein-95 (PSD95) and N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor subunit 2B (NR2B), the levels of which were positively correlated with Proline-rich tyrosine kinase 2 (Pyk2) levels under diabetic conditions. Thus, we suggest that hippocampal protection via sEH inhibition might be a potential therapeutic approach to attenuate the progression of cognitive decline in diabetes.

A functional yogurt was prepared with Ligustrum robustum (Rxob.) Blume extract (LRE), while its antioxidant and hypoglycemic activities were evaluated and its action mechanism was further explored. With the cofermentation of LRE, the yogurt showed the fine quality characteristics, including pH, titratable acidity, texture, syneresis susceptibility, color, microbiological content, and chemical composition. Meanwhile, the yogurt exhibited the remarkable antioxidant capability to enhance the activities of antioxidant enzymes and reduce the malondialdehyde level in animal serums. In addition, the yogurt showed the obvious hypoglycemic activity to inhibit the decrease of glucose tolerance and the increase of postprandial hyperglycemia of diabetes mice. Furthermore, using the analysis of molecular docking, the main compounds of LRE could combine tightly with α-amylase and α-glucosidase by hydrogen bond and hydrophobic interaction, so as to change their spatial structure and inhibit their biocatalytic activity in glucose metabolism. All present results suggested that LRE showed the potential value to be used as supplement to enhance the quality and functions of yogurt in food industry. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The hypoglycemic and antioxidant activities of a functional yogurt cofermented with LRE were found and its relative action mechanism was also explored. This work provide the experimental and theoretical basis for the application of this yogurt as nutraceuticals to protect human health in food industry.

Myocardial injury after cardiac arrest (CA) often results in severe myocardial dysfunction and death involving mitochondrial dysfunction. Here, we sought to investigate whether baicalin, a natural flavonoid compound, exerts cardioprotection against CA-induced injury via regulating mitochondrial dysfunction. We subjected the rats to asphyxia CA after a daily baicalin treatment for 4 weeks. After the return of spontaneous circulation, baicalin treatment significantly improved cardiac function performance, elevated survival rate from 35% to 75%, prevented necrosis and apoptosis in the myocardium, which was accompanied by reduced phosphorylation of Drp1 at serine 616, inhibited Drp1 translocation to the mitochondria and mitochondrial fission, and improved mitochondrial function. In H9c2 cells subjected to simulated ischemia/reperfusion, increased phosphorylation of Drp1 at serine 616 and subsequently enhanced mitochondrial Drp1 translocation as well as mitochondrial fission, augmented cardiomyocyte death, increased reactive oxygen species production, released cytochrome c from mitochondria and injured mitochondrial respiration were efficiently improved by baicalin and Drp1 specific inhibitor with Mdivi-1. Furthermore, overexpression of Drp1 augmented excessive mitochondrial fission and abolished baicalin-afforded cardioprotection, indicating that the protective impacts of baicalin are linked to the inhibition of Drp1. Altogether, our findings disclose for the first time that baicalin offers cardioprotection against ischemic myocardial injury after CA by inhibiting Drp1-mediated mitochondrial fission. Baicalin might be a prospective therapy for the treatment of post-CA myocardial injury.

Nature utilizes a diverse array of protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) to regulate protein structure, activity, localization, and function. Among them, protein 4'-phosphopantetheinylation derived from Coenzyme A (CoA) is an essential PTM for the biosynthesis of fatty acids, polyketides, and non-ribosomal peptides in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. To explore its functions, various chemical probes mimicking the natural structure of 4'-phosphopantetheinylation have been developed. In this minireview, we summarize these chemical probes and describe their applications in direct and metabolic labelling of proteins in bacterial and mammalian cells.

The increase of affected river reaches by reservoirs has drastically disturbed the original hydrological conditions, and subsequently influenced the nutrient biogeochemistry in the aquatic system, particularly in the cascade reservoir system. To understand the seasonal variation of nitrogen (N) behaviors in cascade reservoirs, hydrochemistry and nitrate dual isotopes (δ15N-NO3- and δ18O-NO3-) were conducted in a karst watershed (Wujiang River) in southwest China. The results showed that NO3--N accounted for almost 90% of the total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) concentration with high average concentration 3.8 ± 0.4 mg/L among four cascade reservoirs. Higher N concentration (4.0 ± 0.8 mg/L) and larger longitudinal variation were observed in summer than in other seasons. The relationship between the variation of NO3--N and dual isotopes in the profiles demonstrated that nitrification was dominated transformation, while assimilation contributed significantly in the epilimnion during spring and summer. The high dissolved oxygen concentration in the present cascade reservoirs system prevented the occurrence of N depletion processes in most of the reservoirs. Denitrification occurred in the oldest reservoir during winter with a rate ranging from 18 to 28%. The long-term record of surface water TDN concentration in reservoirs demonstrated an increase from 2.0 to 3.6 mg/L during the past two decades (~ 0.1 mg/L per year). The seasonal nitrate isotopic signature and continuously increased fertilizer application demonstrated that chemical fertilizer contribution significantly influenced NO3--N concentration in the karst cascade reservoirs. The research highlighted that the notable N increase in karst cascade reservoirs could influence the aquatic health in the region and further investigations were required.

Sodium- and potassium-ion batteries have attracted intensive attention recently as low-cost alternatives to lithium-ion batteries with naturally abundant resources. However, the large ionic radii of Na+ and K+ render their slow mobility, leading to sluggish diffusion in host materials. Herein, hierarchical FeSe2 microspheres assembled by closely packed nano/microrods are rationally designed and synthesized through a facile solvothermal method. Without carbonaceous material incorporation, the electrode delivers a reversible Na+ storage capacity of 559 mA h g-1 at a current rate of 0.1 A g-1 and a remarkable rate performance with a capacity of 525 mA h g-1 at 20 A g-1 . As for K+ storage, the FeSe2 anode delivers a high reversible capacity of 393 mA h g-1 at 0.4 A g-1 . Even at a high current rate of 5 A g-1 , a discharge capacity of 322 mA h g-1 can be achieved, which is among the best high-rate anodes for K+ storage. The excellent electrochemical performance can be attributed to the favorable morphological structure and the use of an ether-based electrolyte during cycling. Moreover, quantitative study suggests a strong pseudocapacitive contribution, which boosts fast kinetics and interfacial storage.

Photo-controlled reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (photo-RDRP) has been investigated as a “green” and spatiotemporally controlling pathway for polymer synthesis. While the combination of photo-RDRP and flow chemistry has offered opportunities to increase light intensity and enable uniform light irradiation, problems associated with flow approaches still remain for photoflow-RDRP, which has hindered merging flow polymerization with other cutting-edge techniques. Herein, we summarize challenges and recent achievements in photoflow-RDRP including the development of (a) droplet/slug-flow to regulate residence time distribution, (b) mixing techniques to tailor polymer, (c) polymerization induced self-assembly, and (d) computer-aided synthesis. We hope this work will provide informative knowledge to people in related fields and stimulate novel ideas to promote polymer synthesis in both academia and industry.
