In this study, 5-aminosalicylic acid was successfully grafted onto the poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) macromolecular chains of PGMA/SiO(2) to obtain a novel adsorbent designated as ASA-PGMA/SiO(2). The adsorption properties of ASA-PGMA/SiO(2) for heavy metal ions were studied through batch and column methods. The experimental results showed that ASA-PGMA/SiO(2) possesses strong chelating adsorption ability for heavy metal ions, and its adsorption capacity for Cu(2+), Cd(2+), Zn(2+), and Pb(2+) reaches 0.42, 0.40, 0.35, and 0.31 mmol g(-1), respectively. In addition, pH has a great influence on the adsorption capacity in the studied pH range. The adsorption isotherm data greatly obey the Langmuir and Freundlich model. The desorption of metal ions from ASA-PGMA/SiO(2) is effective using 0.1 mol l(-1) of hydrochloric acid solution as eluent. Consecutive adsorption-desorption experiments showed that ASA-PGMA/SiO(2) could be reused almost without any loss in the adsorption capacity., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.)

Numerous academic studies in the field of chemical education utilize the conceptual framework of three distinct tiers that underlie the instruction and acquisition of chemical knowledge. This framework is commonly depicted in a chemistry triangle, with the vertices denoted as macroscopic, submicroscopic, and symbolic. The ability of students to effectively convert between various representations and develop triple representation thinking can be advantageous in comprehending chemical concepts and the underlying micro essence. However, studies have shown that students have certain difficulties with triple representation. A microcomputer-based laboratory provides students with intuitive material by dynamically presenting data images in real time, helping students transfer among triple representations. This study investigated the effect of a microcomputer-based laboratory on the triple representation of a chemistry lesson based on eye-tracking evidence. The experimental group (N = 14) completed the test by watching the experimental video of the microcomputer-based laboratory, while the control group (N = 13) watched the traditional experimental video. Eye-tracking was used to make real-time recordings of the experimental procedures carried out by each of the groups. By comparing the triple representation test results and eye-tracking indicators of the two groups, the results show that a microcomputer-based laboratory has a positive effect on the triple representation, and the experimental group performed significantly better when acquiring image information under the influence of the microcomputer-based laboratory.

Abstract Although the LiCoO2 (LCO) cathode material has been widely used in commercial lithium ion batteries (LIB) and shows high stability, LIB’s improvements have several challenges that still need to be overcome. In this paper, we have studied the in-operando structural properties of LCO within battery cells using Bragg Coherent X-ray Diffraction Imaging to identify ways to optimise the LCO batteries’ cycling. We have successfully reconstructed the X-ray scattering phase variation (a fingerprint of atomic displacement) within a ≈ (1.6 × 1.4 × 1.3) μm3 LCO nanocrystal across a charge/discharge cycle. Reconstructions indicate strained domains forming, expanding, and fragmenting near the surface of the nanocrystal during charging, with a determined maximum relative lattice displacements of 0.467 Å. While discharging, all domains replicate in reverse the effects observed from the charging states, but with a lower maximum relative lattice displacements of 0.226 Å. These findings show the inefficiency-increasing domain dynamics within LCO lattices during cycling.

The synthesis of zeolites from natural aluminosilicate minerals has drawn extensive attention due to its significant utility in greening the zeolite manufacturing process. In this study, pure-phase NaX zeolite was synthesized via a low-temperature hydrothermal method, utilizing natural, low-quality attapulgite clay as the raw material. Acidified clay was fully activated through alkali fusion at 200 °C, and the impact of alkali fusion temperature, H2O/Na2O ratio, aging temperature, and crystallization time on the resulting crystalline NaX zeolite was investigated. The optimal conditions for obtaining pure NaX zeolite were determined to be alkali melting at 200 °C for 4 h, an H2O/Na2O ratio of 50, aging at 40 °C, and a crystallization period of 11 h at 90 °C. With a large BET surface area of 328.43 m2/g, the obtained NaX zeolite was used to adsorb Pb2+ from wastewater with a removal rate of 95%. This research provides a valuable method for the extensive and efficient utilization of low-grade natural attapulgite clay. Moreover, this is the first report on the synthesis of pure-phase NaX zeolite using only low-quality natural attapulgite clay as raw material through an atmospheric pressure water bath method.

Abstract Determination of high sulfur content in sulfide minerals is crucial for various applications, including geochemistry, mining, and environmental monitoring. While inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) is the preferred method for sulfur analysis, conventional sample preparation techniques often fall short when dealing with high sulfur concentrations. This study investigated optimized digestion conditions for accurate sulfur determination in sulfide minerals using ICP-OES. We employed anti-corrosion acid digestion bombs, an aqua regia–hydrofluoric acid system, and a digestion temperature of 180 °C, achieving exceptional results. Certified reference material recoveries ranged from 99.9 to 100.5%, with relative standard deviations between 0.42 and 0.84%. These results demonstrate the high accuracy and precision of the method. The optimized digestion protocol presented in this study provides a robust and reliable approach for accurate sulfur analysis in sulfide minerals, particularly for high concentrations.

The gene editing and synthetic biological tools have led to the implementation of diverse metabolic engineering approaches to enhance the production of specific enzymes. Microbial keratinases can convert keratin wastes into valuable compounds for mankind. Since the market for keratinases cannot be satisfied by production from wild hosts, it is obligatory to develop hosts with high keratinase yields. The intention of this review is to evaluate microbial keratinase advancement through protein engineering, breeding techniques, and fermentation optimization. The main aim of protein engineering is to improve the heat resistance ability and catalytic activity of keratinases by employing mutagenesis methods. Moreover, modifying the expression elements and host engineering are also two unique ways to augment the keratinase yield. Intending to accelerate the production of modified keratinase, this review attempts to highlight the optimization of expression elements, such as promoter engineering, UTR, signal peptide, and codon optimization. Moreover, the approaches of host engineering including strengthening precursor supply, membrane surface engineering, and optimization of secretion pathways were also explained here. Furthermore, it is also essential to optimize the medium composition and fermentation condition for high keratinase yield. This review also addressed the present advancements, difficulties, and tendencies in the field of microbial keratinase production, along with its potential.

Abstract The untargeted metabolomics-based molecular networking approach combined with multivariate analysis, proves to be an effective strategy for distinguishing raw materials in herbal medicine according to specific criteria. It exhibits the correlations between chemical constituents and the geographical habitats of plants, providing a valuable tool for ensuring quality control in mass production within the industry. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive investigation of the chemical compositions of Epimedium koreanum Nakai and performed comparative analyses on four extracts collected from distinct regions in South Korea using untargeted metabolomics tools. Through the comprehensive use of UPLC-QTOF/MS analysis and advanced statistical techniques, we elucidated the chemical composition, leading to the identification of key chemical markers. Additionally, the molecular networking analysis revealed distinct clusters of flavonoids and phenolic acids, highlighting the influence of regional factors on the metabolite profiles. These findings offer a promising avenue for enhancing quality control and traceability in the herbal medicine industry, underscoring the important role of geographical variation in the chemical profiles of herbal products.

In the evolving landscape of higher education, challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic have underscored the necessity for innovative teaching methodologies. These challenges have catalyzed the integration of technology into education, particularly in blended learning environments, to bolster self-regulated learning (SRL) and higher-order thinking skills (HOTS). However, increased autonomy in blended learning can lead to learning disruptions if issues are not promptly addressed. In this context, OpenAI's ChatGPT, known for its extensive knowledge base and immediate feedback capability, emerges as a significant educational resource. Nonetheless, there are concerns that students might become excessively dependent on such tools, potentially hindering their development of HOTS. To address these concerns, this study introduces the Guidance-based ChatGPT-assisted Learning Aid (GCLA). This approach modifies the use of ChatGPT in educational settings by encouraging students to attempt problem-solving independently before seeking ChatGPT assistance. When engaged, the GCLA provides guidance through hints rather than direct answers, fostering an environment conducive to the development of SRL and HOTS. A randomized controlled trial (RCT) was employed to examine the impact of the GCLA compared to traditional ChatGPT use in a foundational chemistry course within a blended learning setting. This study involved 61 undergraduate students from a university in Taiwan. The findings reveal that the GCLA enhances SRL, HOTS, and knowledge construction compared to traditional ChatGPT use. These results directly align with the research objective to improve learning outcomes through providing guidance rather than answers by ChatGPT. In conclusion, the introduction of the GCLA has not only facilitated more effective learning experiences in blended learning environments but also ensured that students engage more actively in their educational journey. The implications of this study highlight the potential of ChatGPT-based tools in enhancing the quality of higher education, particularly in fostering essential skills such as self-regulation and HOTS. Furthermore, this research offers insights regarding the more effective use of ChatGPT in education.

In search of innovative antifungal solutions for the control of plant diseases, a series of cyanoacrylate derivatives containing naphthalene groups were designed and synthesized, and their inhibition activity against four plant pathogenic fungi was evaluated. The results of in vitro bioassay revealed that some target compounds possessed obvious antifungal effect against Fusarium graminearum. As the most prominent one, compound A2 showed a inhibition rate of 98.46 % at 10 µg/mL and an EC50 value of 0.26 µg/mL, which was close to that of the positive control phenamacril (with a inhibition rate of 100 % at 10 µg/mL and EC50 value of 0.14 µg/mL). The compound A2 also markedly inhibited the growth of F. graminearum inoculated on rice leaves at 200 μg/mL with the protective and curative efficiencies of 89.03 % and 90.91 %, respectively, which were close to that of the positive control phenamacril (with the protective and curative efficiencies of 94.54 % and 96.36 %, respectively). The observation under scanning electron microscopy and measurement of relative conductivity revealed that compound A2 caused the hyphal surface become shrunken and rough, and made the cell membrane permeability increased. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation analyses showed that compound A2 interacted with the key residues in the active site of myosin-5 in a similar mode as phenamacril. These results suggested that target compounds were potential myosin-5 inhibitors, they could serve as the lead compounds for further structural optimization to develop new fungicides against F. graminearum.

Abstract Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) are the most potent toxins known and are used to treat an increasing number of medical disorders. All BoNTs are naturally co-expressed with a protective partner protein (NTNH) with which they form a 300 kDa complex, to resist acidic and proteolytic attack from the digestive tract. We have previously identified a new botulinum neurotoxin serotype, BoNT/X, that has unique and therapeutically attractive properties. We present the cryo-EM structure of the BoNT/X-NTNH/X complex and the crystal structure of the isolated NTNH protein. Unexpectedly, the BoNT/X complex is stable and protease-resistant at both neutral and acidic pH and disassembles only in alkaline conditions. Using the stabilizing effect of NTNH, we isolated BoNT/X and showed that it has very low potency both in vitro and in vivo. Given the high catalytic activity and translocation efficacy of BoNT/X, low activity of the full toxin is likely due to the receptor-binding domain, which presents very weak ganglioside binding and exposed hydrophobic surfaces.

Abstract Background Mapping the distribution of bioavailable isotope ratios across landscapes serves as an efficient geochemical tool for delineating the origins and migration trajectories of humans and animals. Chungcheongbuk-do Province in central Korea, known for its geological diversity and inland location isolated from coastal influences, provides an ideal area to study the contributions of geological and environmental factors to the isotope landscape (isoscape). This study analyzed the distribution of bioavailable Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopes in the province using plant and soil data obtained in this study and from previous works. Findings Chungcheongbuk-do features diverse geological elements, including Precambrian basement, Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks, and Mesozoic granitoids and volcano-sedimentary sequences. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios of bulk soil samples from 44 sites primarily range from 0.781 to 0.706, with two ratios exceeding 0.9 originating from Precambrian basement and Cretaceous granitoid areas. Fractions of soils treated with 1 M ammonium nitrate and acetic acid exhibit indistinguishable 87Sr/86Sr ratios (R2 = 0.99, except for one point), spanning from 0.804 to 0.707. Plant 87Sr/86Sr ratios demonstrate a robust positive correlation with leachate ratios (for ammonium nitrate data, ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) plant = 0.938 × ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) leachate + 0.045, R2 = 0.98). The εNd values of bulk soils from Precambrian basement areas (–18 to –30) plot against Sm/Nd ratios around the reference line corresponding to 3 Ga, while other bulk soil samples (εNd = –1 to –21) align with a younger (~ 2 Ga) reference line. Plant εNd values, ranging from –4 to –24, exhibit a prominent positive correlation with ammonium nitrate leachates (plant ε Nd = 0.77 × leachate ε Nd – 3.83, R2 = 0.89). Plant samples do not show consistent variation between 87Sr/86Sr and εNd. The 206Pb/204Pb and 207Pb/204Pb ratios of bulk soils show a ~ 2 Ga trend, typical for Korean basement rocks. The Pb isotopic ratios of ammonium nitrate and acetic acid leachates match perfectly with each other (R2 = 0.99). The 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, and 208Pb/204Pb ratios of plant samples vary narrowly (19.2–17.9; 15.8–15.5; 39.0–38.0) and are distinctly different from those of bulk soils (24.4–17.9; 16.5–15.6; 42.5–37.9) and their leachates (23.1–17.7; 16.2–15.6; 41.0–38.1). Plant and soil data from this study and previous works were used to construct Sr and Nd isoscapes, employing interpolation models based on inverse distance weighting, simple kriging, empirical Bayesian kriging, and geology and topography-considered empirical Bayesian kriging regression prediction. These maps await validation through analysis of additional archives. Conclusions The isotope data obtained in this study highlight a strong geological control over bioavailable Sr and Nd, in contrast to a dominant environmental influence on bioavailable Pb. The Sr and Nd isoscapes presented here are potentially valuable for addressing archaeological or forensic inquiries in their current state. Nevertheless, the maps would benefit from additional refinement with increased sample density and enhanced interpolation models.

Abstract Background Recent advances in high-resolution mass spectrometry have now enabled the study of proteomes at the single-cell level, offering the potential to unveil novel aspects of cellular processes. Remarkably, there has been no prior attempt to investigate single-plant cell proteomes. In this study, we aimed to explore the feasibility of conducting a proteomic analysis on individual protoplasts. Findings As a result, our analysis identified 978 proteins from the 180 protoplasts, aligning with well-known biological processes in plant leaves, such as photosynthetic electron transport in photosystem II. Employing the SCP package in the SCoPE2 workflow revealed a notable batch effect and extensive missing values in the data. Following correction, we observed the heterogeneity in single-protoplast proteome expression. Comparing the results of single-protoplast proteomics with those of bulk leaf proteomics, we noted that only a small fraction of bulk data was detected in the single-protoplast proteomics data, highlighting a technical limitation of the current single-cell proteomics method. Conclusions In summary, we demonstrated the feasibility of conducting a single-protoplast proteomic experiment, revealing heterogeneity in plant cellular proteome expression. This underscores the importance of analyzing a substantial number of plant cells to discern statistically significant changes in plant cell proteomes upon perturbation such as abscisic acid treatment in future studies. We anticipate that our study will contribute to advancing single-protoplast proteomics in the near future.

Protein content in food is an important indicator of the nutritional value of food, and it is also related to food safety and many other issues, therefore it is significant to accurately determine the protein content for the valuation of food nutrition and safety. The main elements in food include carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and sulphur, of which nitrogen mainly comes from protein. The average nitrogen content in protein is 16%, so the conversion factor for “nitrogen-to-protein” is 6.25. Therefore, the protein content in food can be obtained by measuring the nitrogen content of food combined with “nitrogen-to-protein” conversion factor. The traditional methods of protein detection are Kjeldahl method, spectrophotometry, and Dumas combustion. The Kjeldahl method is time-consuming and consumes a large amount of reagents, which can cause environmental pollution. Spectrophotometry is susceptible to interference and the quantitative curve is not easy to draw. Dumas combustion is expensive in terms of consumables. In this paper, a platform of tube furnace-quadrupole mass spectrometer was set up to analyze the protein content in food. Food samples were heated at high temperatures in a tube furnace and combusted in an oxygen-rich environment. After the gas products were ionized, they were directly introduced into a quadrupole mass analyzer for detection, which eliminated the need for processes such as oxidation-reduction, adsorption-desorption by using the selection ion scan function of the mass spectrometer. Five kinds of food samples with different protein contents were selected as research object. Each food sample was weighed at 1 g. The food samples were fully combusted in tube furnace at high temperature (1 300 ℃). The gas products were infused through a drying and filtering tube to remove water and smoke, and then entered the EI ion source through a capillary for ionization. By electronic ionization, nitrogen element characteristic ions, N+, NO+, and NO2+ are generated. The peak intensity of the NO2+ ions were detected by the selection ion scan function of the quadrupole mass analyzer. A standard curve for nitrogen quantification is plotted to be y=115.64x+1 896.9 with the correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.99992 and the relative standard deviation (RSD) of 2.1%-6.1%. The nitrogen content can be calculated by using the peak intensity of NO2+ ions according to the standard curve. The experimental platform of tube furnace-mass spectrometer provides a green, rapid, accurate, and low-cost detection method for quantitative analysis of protein content in food.

Abstract In order to identify the key antioxidant defense systems used to cope with high-temperature stress in rice leaf chloroplasts following biochar supplementation, the present study compared the expression levels of chloroplast proteins related to antioxidant defense in high-temperature stressed rice leaves between without (C0) and with biochar supplementation (C40; 40 g biochar kg–1 soil). A total of sixteen differentially expressed antioxidant chloroplastic proteins were identified. Among them, three antioxidant enzyme proteins and eight thioredoxin proteins were 62–123% and 37–225% higher under the C40 treatment compared to C0, respectively. These results suggest that both antioxidant enzymes and the thioredoxin system are central to the biochar-mediated protection of rice leaves exposed to high-temperature stress.

Objectives: Respiratory infections are among the most common infectious diseases, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. C-reactive protein (CRP), serum amyloid A (SAA), procalcitonin (PCT), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) are advantageous for diagnosing respiratory tract infections. This study assessed the analytical performance and accuracy of new kits for Eu3+-based CRP/SAA and PCT/IL-6 lateral flow immunoassay and its diagnostic value in respiratory tract infections. Methods: This study evaluated the detection performance of a test kit using guidelines from the Center for Medical Device Evaluation (CMDE) and the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). The test results were compared to those of the commercial kits (CRP: Mindray; SAA: Norman; PCT: Shanghai Upper; IL-6: Wantai BioPharm). A total of 156 patients with respiratory tract infections (53 with bacterial infections (Bac group); 50 with viral infections (Vir group); and 53 with co-infections (Bac + Vir group)) were enrolled, along with 50 healthy controls (HC group). Venous blood samples were collected to measure levels of SAA, PCT, CRP, and IL-6 using both the test and commercial kits. The diagnostic value of these biomarkers was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. In this study, we demonstrate the emergence of NO2 gas sensing capabilities in the typically non-active NiWO4, a strongly correlated electron system (SCES), by introducing substitutional Fe at the Ni site. NiWO4 typically exhibits strong Coulombic repulsion between Ni atoms, resulting in a large band gap of over 3.0 eV and insulating behavior. This correlated behavior is clearly reflected in the significant increase of band gap when considering the Hubbard U correction for the cations, bringing the theoretical value closer to the observed value. The single-phase Fe0.5Ni0.5WO4 displays a notable shift in the [NiO6] symmetric vibration mode and an increase in magnetization. Additionally, theoretical calculations confirm the preservation of the wide band gap, with the Fe and O levels generated within the band gap. These findings indicate that Fe located in the Ni sites modulate Coulombic repulsion in NiWO4 SCES insulators. Unlike the poor gas-sensing performance of intrinsic NiWO4, Fe0.5Ni0.5WO4 exhibits a significant NO2 response (Rg/Ra) of 11 at 200°C than other gases and a limit of detection (LOD) of 46.4 ppb. This study provides a pathway for realizing gas-sensing performance in strongly correlated electron insulators with large band gaps through the introduction of dopant levels at the cation sites.

Buckwheat sprouts are rich in pectic polysaccharides, which possess numerous health-improving benefits. However, the precise structure–activity relationship of pectic polysaccharides from Tartary buckwheat sprouts (TP) is still scant, which ultimately restricts their applications in the food industry. Hence, both ultrasound-assisted Fenton treatment (UAFT) and mild alkali treatment (MATT) were utilized for the modification of TP, and then the effects of physicochemical characteristics of original and modified TPs on their bioactivities were assessed. Our findings reveled that the UAFT treatment could precisely reduce TP’s molecular weight, with the levels decreased from 8.191 × 104 Da to 0.957 × 104 Da. Meanwhile, the MATT treatment could precisely reduce TP’s esterification degree, with the values decreased from 28.04 % to 4.72 %. Nevertheless, both UAFT and MATT treatments had limited effects on the backbone and branched chain of TP. Moreover, our findings unveiled that the UAFT treatment could notably promote TP’s antioxidant, antiglycation, and immunostimulatory effects, while remarkedly reduce TP’s anti-hyperlipidemic effect, which were probably owing to that the UAFT treatment obviously reduced TP’s molecular weight. Additionally, the MATT treatment could also promote TP’s immunostimulatory effect, which was probably attributed to that the MATT treatment significantly decreased TP’s esterification degree. Interestingly, the MATT treatment could regulate TP’s antioxidant and antiglycation effects, which was probably attributed to that the MATT treatment simultaneously reduced its esterification degree and bound phenolics. Our findings are conducive to understanding TP’s structure–activity relationship, and can afford a scientific theoretical basis for the development of functional or healthy products based on TPs. Besides, the UAFT treatment can be a promising approach for the modification of TP to improve its biological functions.

This study introduces the synthesis of a hybrid thermoelectric material with enhanced conductivity and a high Seebeck coefficient, leveraging the properties of Te nanowires (NWs) and the conductive polymer PEDOT:PSS. Te NWs were synthesized using the galvanic displacement reaction. To further enhance conductivity, Ag-Te NWs were synthesized under optimized conditions via the Ag topotactic reaction, achieving desired results within 7 min using ethylene glycol and AgNO3. This hybrid material exhibited an electrical conductivity of 463 S/cm, a Seebeck coefficient of 69.5 μV/K at 300 K, and a power factor of 260 μW/mK2. These metrics surpassed those of conventional Te/PEDOT:PSS hybrids by a factor of 3.6, highlighting the superior performance of our approach. This study represents a significant advancement in thermoelectric materials, improving both conductivity and efficiency.

Background: Huashi Baidu granule (HSBD), an approved herbal formula for treating COVID-19, demonstrates safety and efficacy. Despite its market approval, the detailed methodology and identification of its active components remain unexplored, leaving its bioactive constituents and action mechanisms unclear. Methods: This study investigated the potential mechanisms of HSBD’s active ingredient in treating COVID-19. Our approach integrated various techniques, including the UHPLC-QqQ-MS/MS method, analysis of the GEO database, network pharmacology, surface plasmon resonance, molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations, to formulate a comprehensive research strategy. Results: The UHPLC-QqQ-MS/MS method employed for HSBD analysis proved stable, reliable, and reproducible. We identified 25 principal components in HSBD, with 7 compounds detected in plasma, namely Pogostone, P-Hydroxybenzoic acid, Paeoniflorin, Rhein, Emodin, Ephedrine hydrochloride, and Pseudoephedrine hydrochloride. Protein-Protein Interaction (PPI) network analysis identified MMP9 as a pivotal target. Surface plasmon resonance analysis revealed that Paeoniflorin and Rhein exert their antiviral effects by interacting with RBD and ACE2. In contrast, Emodin’s antiviral mechanism predominantly involves binding to MMP9. Molecular docking results indicated strong binding affinities of Rhein and Paeoniflorin to the hACE2 protein, and high binding affinities of Emodin to the MMP9 protein, all of which were corroborated by molecular dynamics simulations. Conclusion: We investigated the methodology and identified the active components of HSBD, focusing on those absorbed into the plasma, to elucidate the effective material basis of HSBD in the treatment of COVID-19, our research offered insightful exploration into its mechanisms of action against COVID-19.

In the current study, the CN-CD30V10A battery tester, K-type temperature sensor, and RS485 are utilized to perform charging and discharging tests on the Panasonic 21,700 lithium-ion battery at various rates. The voltage and temperature changes are measured in real-time, with the data transmitted to the computer via RS485. Then a micro-thermal resistance method is proposed to calculate the equivalent thermal resistance of the cell core along the axial positive and negative poles, as well as along the radial outer circumference surface under anisotropic conditions. Based on the experimental results and the equivalent thermal resistance, an electrothermal coupling model is established for battery internal temperature estimation, taking into account anisotropy and temperature effects on heat transfer. Through the integration of the model and externally measured temperature, the internal temperature is accurately estimated. Moreover, the proposed model (Root-Mean-Square Error, RMSE=0.329) exhibits a significant improvement in accuracy compared to equivalent circuit model (RMSE=1.08), extended Kalman filter (RMSE=0.95), network extended Kalman filter (RMSE=0.58), and neural network unscented Kalman filter (RMSE=0.61). Specifically, the model achieves an approximately 76 % to 228 % reduction in RMSE compared to these methods.

Uremic Clearance Granule (UCG) is a traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) that has been recognized as potentially effective treatment for diabetic nephropathy (DN). However, the chemical composition and the hypoglycemic ingredients of UCG remain unclear. In this experiment, a magnetic ligand fishing protocol combined with HPLC coupled Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (HPLC-FT-ICR-MS) technology was developed to screen and identify α-Glucosidase inhibitors from UCG. First, constituents of UCG was identified by HPLC-FT-ICR-MS. Next, α-Glucosidase coated Fe3O4@SiO2@NH2 (Fe3O4@SiO2@NH2@α-Glucosidase) nano composites was synthesized. The essential parameters (concentration of Glutaraldehyde (GA), ratio of Fe3O4@SiO2@NH2 to enzyme, crosslinking time and immobilization time) were optimized to obtain maximum enzyme activity and the performance of immobilized enzyme was compared with that of free enzyme. The α-Glucosidase inhibitory activities were then evaluated using autodock and the 4-Nitrophenyl-α-D-glucopyranoside (pNPG) method. As a result, 142 compounds were identified were identified by comparing the retention time, molecular ions and fragmentation behaviors with the reference compounds or the in-house database. 20 possible α-Glucosidase activity inhibitory components were identified using HPLC-FT-ICR-MS. Molecular docking and inhibition studies showed that 4 compuunds including Limonexic acid, Sanggenol A, Glabrone, Matrine were more likely to stronger α-Glucosidase inhibitory activities than acarbose. In conclusion, the proposed approach, which combined highly specific screening with HPLC-FT-ICR-MS, provided a powerful platform for discovering bioactive components from multi-component and multi-target traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs).

To reduce the environmental pollution caused by organic solvents and improve the extraction efficiency, a green and high-effective natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) was screened out and prepared for the extraction of flavonoids from Fructus aurantii based on the COMOS-RS and experimental verification. The results showed the results of theoretical screening and experimental verification were consistent, and Ch-Lea was the best extraction solvent, which further proved the COMOS-RS was an efficient tool for the solvent screening. Then, the extraction conditions were investigated. The optimum extraction conditions were as follows: molar ratio (1:2), water content (30%), solid–liquid ratio (1/60 g/g) and extraction time (15 min), yet the extraction temperature and power did not significantly affect the extraction yield. Under the optimal extraction condition, the extraction yield of flavonoids was 122.68 mg/g. Compared with the traditional extraction solvents (methanol and ethanol), Ch-Lea has a higher extraction yield. And the green assessment was conducted based on Eco-Scale methodology, which results indicated the Ch-Lea was more environmentally friendly than methanol and ethanol. Meanwhile, the Ch-Lea has good reusability, and the extraction yields from four reuses were 122.68 mg/g, 125.13 mg/g, 122.56 mg/g and 105.63 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, the extraction mechanism was delved into using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and reduced density gradient (RDG) analysis. The hydrogen bond interaction, particularly the O-H bonds, between Ch-Lea and the naringin molecule emerged as the primary force driving the extraction process. In summary, Ch-Lea is a green, economical, and highly effective solvent, making it a promising candidate for flavonoid extraction from Fructus aurantii. Its potential as an alternative to traditional extraction solvents further underscores its value.

A simple photometric device was built to measure the kinetics of the title reaction. The device consisted of a green light-emitting diode (centered at 520 nm), a sample vial, a photodiode, and an Arduino microcontroller board. These parts were mounted on a black poly(lactic acid) holder which was manufactured by utilizing three-dimensional printing. Adequate sensitivity and dynamic range (linear detection range from 2 × 10[superscript -3] to 0.9 in absorbance, base 10) and time resolution (ca. 6 × 10[superscript -3] s) have been achieved. The time-resolved absorbance of the pink form of phenolphthalein was recorded automatically. The time scale of the forward reaction can be controlled by [OH[superscript -]]. Evidence of reaching a chemical equilibrium was observed at conditions of higher concentration of phenolphthalein and lower [OH[superscript -]]. We also demonstrated direct observation of the slow reversed reaction (taking ca. hours). Factors affecting the reaction kinetics like the ionic strength and organic solvents have also been tested. For a laboratory class, the basic goal may include the kinetics of the forward reaction and a simple description of the chemical equilibrium. If time allows, the reversed reaction (color reappearing) may be demonstrated. In a test run, the participating high school students positively agreed that this activity had increased their related ability, while a minor portion of them were less confident on more complicated knowledge items like using the Beer-Lambert law, measuring the lifetime, and knowing the evidence of the reverse reaction.

Fluorescence analysis is an important technology, which can obtain the concentration of target analytes through comparing the fluorescence intensity change of a fluorescent sensor. Generally, the fluorescence intensity is measured by a fluorometer. However, many undergraduates have no chance to operate such an expensive instrument. Besides, the students cannot see the fluorescence of the obscured samples during the fluorometer-based detection process. Herein, a flexible experiment for fluorescence analysis was designed using a smartphone for recording fluorescence photographs and the software, Photoshop or ImageJ, for measuring the fluorescence intensity. The change in fluorescence intensity can be directly observed by naked eyes and be quantitatively measured by Photoshop or ImageJ. RhBN, with a simple synthetic process, was chosen as a ClO[superscript -] sensor, whose fluorescence emission significantly increased in the presence of ClO[superscript -] because of the strongly enlarged conjugated system. The experimental course designed in this article overcame the requirement of an expensive fluorometer and provided an interesting and simple approach for educating undergraduates about fluorescence analysis and fluorescent sensors.

Abstract The physiological changes caused by the decline in estrogen levels due to menopause are linked to an increased risk of depression. This study investigated the antidepressant effects of hyperoside (HYP), a natural flavonol glycoside, and its associated molecular mechanisms in primary hippocampal neurons and ovariectomized (OVX) mice. HYP treatment increased nitric oxide (NO) production and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) expression in primary hippocampal neurons; additionally, it upregulated the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and phosphorylated tropomyosin receptor kinase B (TrkB). In OVX mice, HYP treatment significantly improved depression-like behaviors in an open field test to a level comparable to estrogen treatment. Furthermore, HYP treatment upregulated OVX-induced decreased nNOS expression and BDNF-TrkB signaling in the hippocampus. Therefore, this study suggests that HYP exhibits antidepressant potential by addressing estrogen deficiency-induced alterations, specifically by restoring nNOS expression, promoting NO production, and concurrently enhancing BDNF-TrkB signaling in OVX mice.

Abstract 2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT) is an excellent antioxidant that is easily oxidized to 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroperoxyl-4-methyl-2,5-cyclohexadienone (BHTOOH). For the safety of BHT production and usage, it is meaningful to study the thermal stability and decomposition properties of BHT and BHTOOH. In this paper, the thermal decomposition properties of BHT and BHTOOH were compared by the mini closed pressure vessel test (MCPVT) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Their kinetics of thermal decomposition were studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The thermal decomposition products of BHT and BHTOOH were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The results show that there was no significant change in temperature pressure when BHT was warmed up under a nitrogen atmosphere, indicating that BHT was stable within 400 K. The thermal decomposition reaction of BHTOOH was rapid with an initial reaction temperature of 375.2 K. The initial exothermic temperature (Ti) and heat release (QDSC) of DSC were 384.9 K and 865.0 J g−1, respectively. The apparent activation energies (Ea) for the thermal decomposition reactions of BHT and BHTOOH calculated by the Kissinger method were 151.8 kJ mol−1 and 66.07 kJ mol−1, respectively. The main decomposition products of BHT were isobutene and 2-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol. The thermal decomposition products of BHTOOH included BHT, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-ethylphenol, 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, 4,4′-(1,2-ethanediyl) bis [2,6-bis (1,1-dimethylethyl) phenol, etc. Based on the thermal decomposition behavior and products, the reaction pathway has been described. These results indicate that BHT is a potential thermal hazard during production, storage and application. For the safety of the chemical industry, the oxidation of BHT should be avoided.

Abstract Fish are susceptible to blood-sucking parasite infections, which cause severe anemia, dyspnea, and ultimately death. However, veterinary drugs available for fish to treat such infectious diseases are lacking; thus, livestock drugs have been repurposed as aquatic animal drugs. Febantel (FBT) and fenbendazole (FBZ) are representative antiparasitic agents for livestock such as cattle, swine, and poultry, and are considered suitable as aquatic animal drugs. Therefore, we investigated the safety and efficacy of FBT and FBZ in fish and performed a risk assessment to determine the maximum residue limit in fish. Most studies indicate that FBT is rapidly converted to FBZ, which is metabolized to oxfendazole and oxfendazole sulfone. FBZ was frequently detectable in the plasma and tissues (e.g., muscle, skin, and the liver) in significant quantities than other metabolites. We regarded the liver as the target organ because reversible hepatocytic changes were observed in fish after administration of 100 mg/kg FBT for 9 days. No toxicological effects, such as increased mortality or decreased appetite, were observed when the fish were administered 50 mg/kg FBT for 3 days. The efficacy of the drugs was verified in various parasites, including H. heterocerca, H. okamotoi or Z. japonica, and M. seriolae, as causative agents of beko disease through laboratory and field trials. Although toxicity studies on FBZ in fish are limited, its safety has been demonstrated from toxicity studies in a wide range of animal models. The risk from using FBT and FBZ was negligible for human health because the ratio of the estimates of dietary exposure and acceptable daily intake was 78.4%.
