A general method is described for asymmetric synthesis of both syn- and anti-1,3-amino alcohols. This method is found to be effective for a variety of substrates incorporating either aromatic or various aliphatic substituents.

Several mechanistic studies are conducted to explain the mechanisms involved in the reactions taking place between the aromatic ketones with olefins. The rate of C-H/olefin coupling is shown to exhibit a complete dependence on the concentration of the ruthenium complex in the system.

Theoretical and experimental studies are carried out for the three catalyst systems in order to answer a question that is unique for phosphine-sulfonate (P-S[O.sub.3]). The comparison of P-S[O.sub.3] and diphosphine (P-P) has shown that the [pi]-acrylonitrile complex is less stable than the corresponding [sigma]-complex in both the phosphine-sulfonato complex and the diphosphine complex and the comparison between P-S[O.sub.3] and imine-phenolate (N-O) has not shown any energetic difference in both AN insertion and its subsequent ethylene insertion.

Linear polyethylene propagation starting from Pd phosphine-sulfonate complexes is analyzed by using theoretical and experimental studied. The production of linear polyethylene with high molecular weight under ethylene pressure has shown that the cis and trans PdH(alkene)(phosphine-sulfonate) complexes are accessible in the pressure of excess amount of ethylene.

O-Acylanilines and a ruthenium complex are used for achieving the cleavage of unactivated aromatic C-N bonds on a late-transition-metal center. The results have shown that ruthenium-catalyzed C-C bond formation from o-acylaniline and organoboronate has proceeded via direct C-N bond cleavage on the ruthenium center.

Ruthenium-catalyzed regioselective direct amino- and alkoxycarbonylations of aromatic rings via C-H bond cleavage using chlorocarbonyl compounds are described. The generality of amide and ester groups is achieved by using carbonylating agents and alkyl chloroformates are also used for direct catalytic alkoxycarbonylation.

Several experiments are conducted to explain the mechanisms involved in the regiocontrolled copolymerization of a polar vinyl monomer with carbon monoxide (CO) by using methyl acrylate as a comonomer. The approach is shown to be extremely advantageous, as it helps in producing a copolymer with high level of head-to-tail regularity.

The first example of an alternating copolymerization of a polar vinyl monomer and carbon monoxide using vinyl acetate for the synthesis of [gamma]-polyketones is presented. The analysis provides a pathway for polymer synthesis with polar vinyl monomer, a cheap and easily available component.

A new method is described for producing [pi]-conjugated aromatic compounds by the ruthenium-catalyzed alkenylation of an aromatic C-H bond in arylpyridines and related compounds with alkenyl esters. This coupling reaction can be used for different aromatic compounds having [sp.sup.2] nitrogen directing groups.

The synthesis of ethylene-rich linear copolymers of ethylene and acrylonitrile is described by isolating phosphine-sulfonate methylpalladium complexes. Acrylonitrile units located in the linear polyethylene backbones are detected for the first time.

The highly diastereoselective alpha-alkylation of N'-tert-butanesulfinyl amidines is developed along with methods for converting the alkylation products to enantiomerically enriched amines that incorporate both alpha and beta stereocenters. The first asymmetric synthesis of (6R,7S)-7 amino-7,8-dihydro-alpha-bisabolene showed that this method should provide an efficient asymmetric synthesis of a wide variety of amine-containing compounds.

The stereoselective synthesis of both the syn- and anti-1,3-amino alcohols from a common synthetic intermediate is depicted. The first application of metalloenamines derived from N-sulfinyl imines is reported for the highly diastereoselective addition to aldehydes.
