A once overlooked source of electrolyte degradation incurred by dissolved manganese (II) species in lithium-ion batteries has been identified recently. In order to deactivate the catalytic activity of such manganese (II) ion, 1-aza-12-crown-4-ether (A12C4) with cavity size well matched manganese (II) ion is used in this work as electrolyte additive. Theoretical and experimental results show that stable complex forms between A12C4 and manganese (II) ions in the electrolyte, which does not affect the solvation of Li ions. The strong binding effect of A12C4 additive reduces the charge density of manganese (II) ion and inhibits its destruction of the PF6− structure in the electrolyte, leading to greatly improved thermal stability of manganese (II) ions-containing electrolyte. In addition to bulk electrolyte, A12C4 additive also shows capability in preventing Mn2+ from degrading SEI on graphite surface. Such bulk and interphasial stability introduced by A12C4 leads to significantly improved cycling performance of LIBs.

Ammonia protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) have potential to be a highly efficient power source of high energy density. However, the inadequate catalytic activity of the existing anodes for utilization of ammonia greatly limits the performance of PCFCs. Here we report a Fe-modified state-of-the-art Ni cermet anode with greatly enhanced activity and durability toward utilization of ammonia. Cells with a Fe-decorated Ni-BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.1Yb0.1O3 (Ni-BZCYYb) anode demonstrate an excellent performance, achieving peak power densities of 0.360, 0.723, 1.257, and 1.609 Wcm−2 at 550, 600, 650, and 700 oC, respectively, which are the highest performance of solid oxide fuel cells fueled on ammonia. In addition, the cells show an excellent durability when operated at a constant current density of 0.5 A cm−2 (or power density of ~0.435 Wcm−2) at 650 oC. The superior activity and durability of the Fe-modified Ni/BZCYYb anode is attributed to the alternation of NH3 adsorption strength and N2 desorption barrier heights, as confirmed by first-principles based mechanistic and microkinetic modeling. Our research provides a valuable guidance for the development of efficient electro-catalysts for ammonia PCFCs.

Surface deposition based on metal-phenolic networks (MPNs) has received increasing interest in recent years. The catechol structure is generally considered to be essential to the formation of MPNs. Our most recent results have demonstrated that some kinds of monophenols can form MPNs on substrate surfaces. Herein, we report a fast and effective surface-coating system based on the coordination of 3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-propenoic acid, a kind of monophenol, with Fe3+. Compared with other metal ions such as Cu2+ and Ni2+, Fe3+ with stronger electron acceptability can coordinate with the monophenol more strongly to form MPNs, and moreover, the deposition time significantly decreases to 40 min from generally 24 h. It is demonstrated that the deposition process is controlled by the coordination, Fe3+ hydrolysis, and deprotonation of the monophenol. The coatings endow substrates such as polypropylene microfiltration membrane with underwater superoleophobicity, which can be applied in oil/water separation with high separation efficiency and great long-term stability. In addition, the coated membranes are positively charged and thus are useful in selective adsorption of dyes. The present work not only provides a novel, fast, and one-step deposition method to fabricate MPNs, but also demonstrates that the fabrication efficiency of monophenol-based MPNs is comparable with that of polyphenol-based MPNs.

Although solid-state lithium (Li)-metal batteries promise both high energy density and safety, existing solid ion conductors fail to satisfy the rigorous requirements of battery operations. Inorganic ion conductors allow fast ion transport, but their rigid and brittle nature prevents good interfacial contact with electrodes. Conversely, polymer ion conductors that are Li-metal-stable usually provide better interfacial compatibility and mechanical tolerance, but typically suffer from inferior ionic conductivity owing to the coupling of the ion transport with the motion of the polymer chains1–3. Here we report a general strategy for achieving high-performance solid polymer ion conductors by engineering of molecular channels. Through the coordination of copper ions (Cu2+) with one-dimensional cellulose nanofibrils, we show that the opening of molecular channels within the normally ion-insulating cellulose enables rapid transport of Li+ ions along the polymer chains. In addition to high Li+ conductivity (1.5 × 10−3 siemens per centimetre at room temperature along the molecular chain direction), the Cu2+-coordinated cellulose ion conductor also exhibits a high transference number (0.78, compared with 0.2–0.5 in other polymers2) and a wide window of electrochemical stability (0–4.5 volts) that can accommodate both the Li-metal anode and high-voltage cathodes. This one-dimensional ion conductor also allows ion percolation in thick LiFePO4 solid-state cathodes for application in batteries with a high energy density. Furthermore, we have verified the universality of this molecular-channel engineering approach with other polymers and cations, achieving similarly high conductivities, with implications that could go beyond safe, high-performance solid-state batteries. By coordinating copper ions with the oxygen-containing groups of cellulose nanofibrils, the molecular spacing in the nanofibrils is increased, allowing fast transport of lithium ions and offering hopes for solid-state batteries.

Super-concentrated water-in-salt electrolytes make high-voltage aqueous batteries possible, but at the expense of high cost and several adverse effects, including high viscosity, low conductivity and slow kinetics. Here, we observe a concentration-dependent association between CO2 and TFSI anions in water that reaches maximum strength at 5 mol kg−1 LiTFSI. This TFSI–CO2 complex and its reduction chemistry allow us to decouple the interphasial responsibility of an aqueous electrolyte from its bulk properties, hence making high-voltage aqueous Li-ion batteries practical in dilute salt-in-water electrolytes. The CO2/salt-in-water electrolyte not only inherits the wide electrochemical stability window and non-flammability from water-in-salt electrolytes but also successfully circumvents the numerous disadvantages induced by excessive salt. This work represents a deviation from the water-in-salt pathway that not only benefits the development of practical aqueous batteries, but also highlights how the complex interactions between electrolyte components can be used to manipulate interphasial chemistry. The lithium (Li) metal polymer battery (LMPB) is a promising candidate for solid-state batteries with high safety. However, high voltage stability of such a battery has been hindered by the use of polyethylene oxide (PEO), which oxidizes at a potential lower than 4 V versus Li. Herein, we adopt the polymer-in-salt electrolyte (PISE) strategy to circumvent the disadvantage of the PEO-lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) system with EO/Li ≤ 8 through a dry ball-milling process to avoid the contamination of the residual solvent. The obtained solid-state PISEs exhibit distinctly different morphologies and coordination structures which lead to significant improvement in oxidative stability. P(EO)1LiFSI has a low melting temperature, a high ionic conductivity at 60 °C, and an oxidative stability of ∼4.5 V versus Li/Li+. With an effective interphase rich in inorganic species and a good stability of the hybrid polymer electrolyte toward Li metal, the LMPB constructed with Li||LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 can retain 74.4% of capacity after 186 cycles at 60 °C under the cutoff charge voltage of 4.3 V. The findings offer a promising pathway toward high-voltage stable polymer electrolytes for high-energy-density and safe LMPBs.

We report the first synthesis of aluminum hexafluorophosphate (Al(PF6)3) and its electrochemical properties in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The single crystal structure of the synthesized Al(PF6)3 is revealed as [Al(DMSO)6](PF6)3, and 0.25 M Al(PF6)3 in DMSO with high ionic conductivity is obtained. The purity of this electrolyte was further confirmed with nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. We then demonstrated the reversibility of Al deposition-stripping in this electrolyte using scanning electron microscopy and an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth profiling study. The parasitic reaction involving DMSO decomposition during Al deposition is also identified via gas chromatography/electron ionization mass spectrometry.

Surface vacancies, serving as the activation centers for surface-adsorbed species, have been widely applied in catalysts to improve their activity and selectivity. In the case of ternary compound semiconductors, there is some controversy about exposed atoms and surface defects. Two-dimensional layered BiOCl is an important photocatalyst, which has had numerous studies focused on its oxygen vacancy (OV) and bismuth vacancy (BiV). It has been realized that its (001) surface can consist of exposed halogen atoms rather than oxygen atoms, which thus needs a new explanation for its surface defect engineering mechanism. Using first-principles calculations, the activation behavior of NOX (NO2, NO, N2O) at a chlorine vacancy (ClV) on the BiOCl (001) surface is systematically studied. It is found that after introducing ClV on BiOCl (001) surfaces, NOX molecules all show excellent activities with longer chemical bonds by capturing electrons from the catalyst. Our work furnishes fundamental insight into the activation of small molecules on defect-rich surfaces of ternary compound catalysts.

Aqueous electrolytes were once the rule for the battery industry. Until the advent of lithium ion batteries, a majority of commercially relevant batteries utilized water as the solvent for ion exchange. The development of the intercalation‐based lithium ion battery upended the industrial aqueous electrolyte paradigm: the high energy density of the lithium‐ion battery was revolutionary but required the use of organic electrolytes capable of passivating strongly redox active electrodes. With the safety of organic electrolytes becoming an issue in the early 1990s, a small community re‐examined aqueous electrolytes for lithium ion batteries. The first such audacious attempt was by Dahn et al., who conceptualized an aqueous lithium‐ion battery chemistry based on electrode materials suitable for the narrow electrochemical stability window of water, sacrificing energy density and cycle life for safety and low cost. The concept of an aqueous lithium‐ion battery was revived in the mid‐2010s with “highly concentrated” electrolytes, expanding the electrochemical stability window of water to regions comparable with nonaqueous electrolytes. Since then, significant efforts have been made around the world, aiming to understand the nature of the interfacial stability in those high‐concentration electrolytes as well as to further make the system viable for practical batteries. This review summarizes these efforts in this emerging frontier of new battery chemistries.

A novel electrolyte system with an excellent low-temperature performance for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has been developed and studied. It was discovered for the first time, in this work, that when isoxazole (IZ) was used as the main solvent, the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte for LIBs is more than doubled in a temperature range between -20 and 20 °C compared to the baseline electrolyte using ethylene carbonate-ethyl methyl carbonate as solvents. To solve the problem of solvent co-intercalation into the graphite anode and/or electrolyte decomposition, the lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) salt and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) additive were used to form a stable solid electrolyte interphase on the surface of the graphite anode. Benefitting from the high ionic conductivity at low temperature, cells using a new electrolyte with 1 M LiDFOB in FEC/IZ (1:10, vol %) solvents demonstrated a very high reversible capacity of 187.5 mAh g-1 at -20 °C, while the baseline electrolyte only delivered a reversible capacity of 23.1 mAh g-1.

Metallic zinc is an ideal anode due to its high theoretical capacity (820 mAh g−1), low redox potential (−0.762 V versus the standard hydrogen electrode), high abundance and low toxicity. When used in aqueous electrolyte, it also brings intrinsic safety, but suffers from severe irreversibility. This is best exemplified by low coulombic efficiency, dendrite growth and water consumption. This is thought to be due to severe hydrogen evolution during zinc plating and stripping, hitherto making the in-situ formation of a solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) impossible. Here, we report an aqueous zinc battery in which a dilute and acidic aqueous electrolyte with an alkylammonium salt additive assists the formation of a robust, Zn2+-conducting and waterproof SEI. The presence of this SEI enables excellent performance: dendrite-free zinc plating/stripping at 99.9% coulombic efficiency in a Ti||Zn asymmetric cell for 1,000 cycles; steady charge–discharge in a Zn||Zn symmetric cell for 6,000 cycles (6,000 h); and high energy densities (136 Wh kg−1 in a Zn||VOPO4 full battery with 88.7% retention for >6,000 cycles, 325 Wh kg−1 in a Zn||O2 full battery for >300 cycles and 218 Wh kg−1 in a Zn||MnO2 full battery with 88.5% retention for 1,000 cycles) using limited zinc. The SEI-forming electrolyte also allows the reversible operation of an anode-free pouch cell of Ti||ZnxVOPO4 at 100% depth of discharge for 100 cycles, thus establishing aqueous zinc batteries as viable cell systems for practical applications. A solid–electrolyte interphase that is permeable to Zn(ii) ions but waterproof is formed using an aqueous electrolyte composition. Cycling performances in an anode-free aqueous pouch cell show promise for intrinsically safe energy storage applications.

Aqueous zinc batteries dominate the primary battery market with alkaline chemistries and recently have been rejuvenated as rechargeable devices to compete for grid-scale energy storage applications. Tremendous effort has been made in the past few years and improved cyclability has been demonstrated in both alkaline, neutral, and mild acidic systems. In this review/perspective, we will elucidate the merits of rechargeable aqueous zinc batteries through side-by-side comparison to Li-ion batteries, examine the challenges and progress made in the pursuit of highly rechargeable alkaline and mild acidic batteries, and finally provide a holistic forward look at the technology. The focus is placed on static closed cell designs, while flow batteries and open systems like zinc-air batteries will not be included due to space constraint.

Aqueous rechargeable zinc metal batteries promise attractive advantages including safety, high volumetric energy density, and low cost; however, such benefits cannot be unlocked unless Zn reversibility meets stringent commercial viability. Herein, we report remarkable improvements on Zn reversibility in aqueous electrolytes when phosphonium-based cations are used to reshape interfacial structures and interphasial chemistries, particularly when their ligands contain an ether linkage. This novel aqueous electrolyte supports unprecedented Zn reversibility by showing dendrite-free Zn plating/stripping for over 6400 h at 0.5 mA cm-2 , or over 280 h at 2.5 mA cm-2 , with coulombic efficiency above 99 % even with 20 % Zn utilization per cycle. Excellent full cell performance is demonstrated with Na2 V6 O16 ⋅1.63 H2 O cathode, which cycles for 2000 times at 300 mA g-1 . The microscopic characterization and modeling identify the mechanism of unique interphase chemistry from phosphonium and its functionalities as the key factors responsible for dictating reversible Zn chemistry.

Mussel-inspired surface modification has received significant interest in recent years because of its simplicity and versatility. The deposition systems are still mainly limited to molecules with catechol chemical structures. In this paper, we report a novel deposition system based on a monophenol, vanillic acid (4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoic acid), to fabricate metal-phenolic network coatings on various substrates. The results of the water contact angle and zeta potential reveal that the modified polypropylene microfiltration membrane is underwater superhydrophobic and positively charged, showing applications in oil/water separation and dye removal. Furthermore, the single-face modified Janus membrane is promising in switchable oil/water separation. The results demonstrate a novel example of the metal-monophenolic deposition system, which expands the toolbox of surface coatings and facilitates the understanding of the deposition of phenols.

Electrochemical reduction of nitrogen to ammonia under mild conditions provides an intriguing approach for energy conversion. A grand challenge for electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is to design a superior electrocatalyst to obtain high performance including high catalytic activity and selectivity. In the NRR process, the three most important steps are nitrogen adsorption, nitrogen activation, and ammonia desorption. We take MoS2 as the research object and obtain catalysts with different electronic densities of states through the doping of Fe and V, respectively. Using a combination of experiments and theoretical calculations, it is demonstrated that V-doped MoS2 (MoS2-V) shows better nitrogen adsorption and activation, while Fe-doped MoS2 (MoS2-Fe) obtains the highest ammonia yield in experiments (20.11 µg·h−1·mg−1cat.) due to its easier desorption of ammonia. Therefore, an appropriate balance between nitrogen adsorption, nitrogen activation, and ammonia desorption should be achieved to obtain highly efficient NRR electrocatalysts.

In the fleshy fruit of cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L.), the phloem flow is unloaded via an apoplasmic pathway, which requires protein carriers to export sugars derived from stachyose and raffinose into the apoplasm. However, transporter(s) involved in this process remain unidentified. Here, we report that a hexose transporter, CsSWEET7a (Sugar Will Eventually be Exported Transporter 7a), was highly expressed in cucumber sink tissues and localized to the plasma membrane in companion cells of the phloem. Its expression level increased gradually during fruit development. Down-regulation of CsSWEET7a by RNA interference (RNAi) resulted in smaller fruit size along with reduced soluble sugar levels and reduced allocation of 14C-labelled carbon to sink tissues. CsSWEET7a overexpression lines showed an opposite phenotype. Interestingly, genes encoding alkaline α-galactosidase (AGA) and sucrose synthase (SUS) were also differentially regulated in CsSWEET7a transgenic lines. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated that CsAGA2 co-localized with CsSWEET7a in companion cells, indicating cooperation between AGA and CsSWEET7a in fruit phloem unloading. Our findings indicated that CsSWEET7a is involved in sugar phloem unloading in cucumber fruit by removing hexoses from companion cells to the apoplasmic space to stimulate the raffinose family of oligosaccharides (RFOs) metabolism so that additional sugars can be unloaded to promote fruit growth. This study also provides a possible avenue towards improving fruit production in cucumber.

Temperature coefficients (TCs) for either electrochemical cell voltages or potentials of individual electrodes have been widely utilized to study the thermal safety and cathode/anode phase changes of lithium (Li)-ion batteries. However, the fundamental significance of single electrode potential TCs is little known. In this work, we discover that the Li-ion desolvation process during Li deposition/intercalation is accompanied by considerable entropy change, which significantly contributes to the measured Li/Li+ electrode potential TCs. To explore this phenomenon, we compare the Li/Li+ electrode potential TCs in a series of electrolyte formulations, where the interaction between Li-ion and solvent molecules occurs at varying strength as a function of both solvent and anion species as well as salt concentrations. As a result, we establish correlations between electrode potential TCs and Li-ion solvation structures and further verify them by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. We show that measurements of Li/Li+ electrode potential TCs provide valuable knowledge regarding the Li-ion solvation environments and could serve as a screening tool when designing future electrolytes for Li-ion/Li metal batteries.

Gasoline spark ignition (SI) – Controlled auto-ignition (CAI) hybrid combustion had previously been shown to expanding the operational range of high-efficiency low-temperature combustion and reducing fuel consumption. However, the spark ignition became ineffective when the mixture became highly diluted and the large cyclic variation and even misfire would occur. To achieve high-efficiency combustion in extended engine operational range and overcome the limitation of SI-CAI hybrid combustion, Micro Flame Ignition (MFI) was proposed and researched as a mean to providing multiple auto-ignition sites to initiate the combustion process of the diluted mixture. In this research, both engine experiments and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were carried out to study the MFI combustion and SI-CAI hybrid combustion in a single-cylinder optical engine. Compared to the SI-CAI hybrid combustion, the flame propagation in MFI hybrid combustion was initiated by a large number of reaction fronts produced by the DME auto-ignition at multiple sites. MFI was found to deliver substantially more heat and ignition energy to the premixed mixture than the single spark ignition, enabling much faster initial heat release. However, the flame front expansion speed of MFI hybrid combustion dropped significantly to a similar value to that of the SI-CAI case because of the slower flame speed of diluted gasoline mixture. The MFI combustion exhibited three phases of autoignition stage, flame propagation stage and fast heat release stage. It is characterized by a higher peak heat release rate and shorter duration of the main combustion than those of the SI-CAI combustion. Besides, the use of spark ignition in the MFI operation promoted the autoignition of DME, leading to a shorter combustion duration and faster combustion than the MFI combustion without spark ignition. As a result, the spark assisted MFI strategy could be used to control the combustion phasing and optimize the MFI combustion process.

Cardamonin (CDM) is a natural chalcone with strong anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation-induced osteogenic changes in valve interstitial cells (VICs) play crucial roles in the development of calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD), a degenerative disease characterized by degeneration, thickening, fibrosis, and calcification of the heart valve tissues. To investigate the anti-osteogenic differentiation role of CDM in human valve interstitial cells (hVICs), which consequently reverses the calcification of the aortic valve, human VICs were exposed to osteogenic induction medium (OM) with CDM for further cell viability, osteogenic gene and protein expression analyses, and anti-calcification testing. mRNA sequencing was utilized to analyze the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and related signaling pathways as potential molecular targets involved in CDM's anti-calcification activity. Human aortic valve leaflet ex vivo calcific cultures were used to investigate the CDM inhibition of osteogenic differentiation of hVICs at the tissue level. ApoE-/- mice fed with a high-fat (HF) diet were used to evaluate the effect of CDM on aortic valve calcification. No significant CDM cytotoxicity was seen in the hVICs at 10 μM. The addition of CDM to OM prevented calcified nodule accumulation, and a decrease in the gene/protein expression levels of BMP2, RUNX2, SPP1, TNF-α, and COL1A2 was observed. Venn diagram analysis of the DEGs identified 666 common DEGs and highlighted the NOD-like receptor signaling pathway (ko04621) as an anti-calcification target of CDM. CDM also repressed the activation of p-AKT, p-ERK1/2, and p-IκBα, and prevented the OM-induced nuclear transcription of NF-κB p65. In the in vitro and ex vivo calcific conditional culture experiments, CDM exhibited anti-inflammatory and anti-calcification effects by suppressing the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome and downregulating IL-1β expression. In vivo, CDM ameliorated aortic valve calcification by interfering with NLRP3 expression. Our study demonstrated that CDM inhibited the phenotypical calcific transformation of hVICs by mediating the inactivation of the NF-κB/NLRP3 inflammasome. Therefore, it is considered to be a promising natural compound for use in preventing the progression of heart valve calcification disease.

When two is better than four Batteries based on the reaction of zinc and oxygen have been used for more than a century, but these have been primary (that is, nonrechargeable) cells. These batteries use an alkaline electrolyte and require a four-electron reduction of oxygen to water, which is a slow process. Sun et al. show that with the right choice of nonalkaline electrolyte, the battery can operate using a two-electron zinc-oxygen/zinc peroxide chemistry that is far more reversible. By making the electrolyte hydrophobic, water is excluded from the near surface of the cathode, thus preventing the four-electron reduction. Animal protein sources such as fishmeal and plasma powder are excellent and indispensable sources of energy, amino acids, and minerals in animal production. Amino acid imbalance, especially methionine-to-sulfur amino acid (Met:SAA) ratio, caused by an imbalance of animal protein meal leads to growth restriction. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of imbalanced Met:SAA ratio supplementation of different animal protein source diets on growth performance, plasma amino acid profiles, antioxidant capacity and intestinal morphology in a piglet model. Twenty-four weaned piglets (castrated males; BW = 10.46 ± 0.34 kg), assigned randomly into 3 groups (8 piglets/group), were fed for 28 d. Three experimental diets of equal energy and crude protein levels were as follows: 1) a corn-soybean basal diet with a Met:SAA ratio at 0.51 (BD); 2) a plasma powder diet with a low Met:SAA ratio at 0.41 (L-MR); 3) a fishmeal diet with a high Met:SAA ratio at 0.61 (H-MR). Engineering coatings with precise physicochemical properties allows for control over the interface of a material and its interactions with the surrounding environment. However, assembling coatings with well-defined properties on different material classes remains a challenge. Herein, we report a co-assembly strategy to precisely control the structure and properties (e.g., thickness, adhesion, wettability, and zeta potential) of coatings on various materials (27 substrates examined) using quinone and polyamine building blocks. By increasing the length of the amine building blocks from small molecule diamines to branched amine polymers, we tune the properties of the films, including the thickness (from ca. 5 to ca. 50 nm), interfacial adhesion (0.05 to 5.54 nN), water contact angle (130 to 40°), and zeta potential (-42 to 28 mV). The films can be post-functionalized through the in situ formation of diverse nanostructures, including nanoparticles, nanorods, and nanocrystals. Our approach provides a platform for the rational design of engineered, substrate-independent coatings for various applications.

Background Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a kind of diffuse interstitial lung disease, the pathogenesis of which is unclear, and there is currently a lack of good treatment to improve the survival rate. Human menstrual blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MenSCs) have shown great potential in regenerative medicine. This study aimed to explore the therapeutic potential of MenSCs for bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis. Methods We investigated the transplantation of MenSCs in a pulmonary fibrosis mouse model induced by BLM. Mouse was divided into three groups: control group, BLM group, MenSC group. Twenty-one days after MenSC transplantation, we examined collagen content, pathological, fibrosis area in the lung tissue, and the level of inflammatory factors of serum. RNA sequence was used to examine the differential expressed gene between three groups. Transwell coculture experiments were further used to examine the function of MenSCs to MLE-12 cells and mouse lung fibroblasts (MLFs) in vitro. Results We observed that transplantation of MenSCs significantly improves pulmonary fibrosis mouse through evaluations of pathological lesions, collagen deposition, and inflammation. Transwell coculturing experiments showed that MenSCs suppress the proliferation and the differentiation of MLFs and inhibit the apoptosis of MLE-12 cells. Furthermore, antibody array results demonstrated that MenSCs inhibit the apoptosis of MLE-12 cells by suppressing the expression of inflammatory-related cytokines, including RANTES, Eotaxin, GM-CSF, MIP-1γ, MCP-5, CCL1, and GITR. Conclusions Collectively, our results suggested MenSCs have a great potential in the treatment of pulmonary fibrosis, and cytokines revealed in antibody array are expected to become the target of future therapy of MenSCs in clinical treatment of pulmonary fibrosis.

The atomic structure of quasi one-dimensional (1D) van der Waals materials can be regarded as the stacking of atomic chains to form thin flakes or nanoribbons, which substantially differentiates them from typical two-dimensional (2D) layered materials and 1D nanotube/nanowire array. Here we present our studies on quasi 1D gold selenide (AuSe) that possesses highly anisotropic crystal structure, excellent electrical conductivity, giant magnetoresistance, and unusual reentrant metallic behavior. The low in-plane symmetry of AuSe gives rise to its high anisotropy of vibrational behavior. In contrast, quasi 1D AuSe exhibits high in-plane electrical conductivity along the directions of both atomic chains and perpendicular one, which can be understood as a result of strong interchain interaction. We found that AuSe exhibits a near quadratic nonsaturating giant magnetoresistance of 1841% with the magnetic field perpendicular to its in-plane. We also observe unusual reentrant metallic behavior, which is caused by the carrier mismatch in the multiband transport. Our works help to establish fundamental understandings on quasi 1D van der Waals semimetallic AuSe and identify it as a new candidate for exploring giant magnetoresistance and compensated semimetals.

Rechargeable zinc metal batteries (RZMBs) offer a compelling complement to existing lithium ion and emerging lithium metal batteries for meeting the increasing energy storage demands of the future. Multiple recent reports have suggested that optimized electrolytes resolve a century-old challenge for RZMBs by achieving extremely reversible zinc plating/stripping with Coulombic efficiencies (CEs) approaching 100%. However, the disparity among published testing methods and conditions severely convolutes electrolyte performance comparisons. The lack of rigorous and standardized protocols is rapidly becoming an impediment to ongoing research and commercialization thrusts. This Perspective examines recent efforts to improve the reversibility of the zinc metal anode in terms of key parameters, including CE protocols, plating morphology, dendrite formation and long-term stability. Then we suggest the most appropriate standard protocols for future CE determination. Finally, we envision future strategies to improve zinc/electrolyte stability so that research efforts can be better aligned towards realistic performance targets for RZMB commercialization. Zinc metal batteries (ZMBs) provide a promising alternative to lithium metal batteries but share the formidable challenges in reversibility. The authors discuss the key performance metrics of ZMBs and propose a protocol to assess the true reversibility of zinc metal anodes.

Superconcentrated aqueous electrolytes (“water-in-salt” electrolytes, or WiSEs) enable various aqueous battery chemistries beyond the voltage limits imposed by the Pourbaix diagram of water. However, their detailed structural and transport properties remain unexplored and could be better understood through added studies. Here, we report on our observations of strong acidity (pH 2.4) induced by lithium bis­(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)­imide (LiTFSI) at superconcentration (at 20 mol/kg). Multiple nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and pulsed-field gradient (PFG) diffusion NMR experiments, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations reveal that such acidity originates from the formation of nanometric ion-rich structures. The experimental and simulation results indicate the separation of water-rich and ion-rich domains at salt concentrations ≥5 m and the acidity arising therefrom is due to deprotonation of water molecules in the ion-rich domains. As such, the ion-rich domain is composed of hydrophobic −CF3 (of TFSI–) and hydrophilic hydroxyl (OH–) groups. At 20 m concentration, the tortuosity and radius of water diffusion channels are estimated to be ∼10 and ∼1 nm, respectively, which are close to values obtained from hydrated Nafion membranes that also have hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) backbones and hydrophilic channels consisting of SO3– ion cluster networks providing for the transport of ions and water. Thus, we have discovered the structural similarity between WiSE and hydrated Nafion membranes on the nanometer scale.

Hydrogenation is an effective approach to improve the performance of photocatalysts within defect engineering methods. The mechanism of hydrogenation and synergetic effects between hydrogen atoms and local electronic structures, however, remain unclear due to the limits of available photocatalytic systems and technical barriers to observation and measurement. Here, we utilize oxygen vacancies as residential sites to host hydrogen atoms in a layered bismuth oxychloride material containing defects. It is confirmed theoretically and experimentally that the hydrogen atoms interact with the vacancies and surrounding atoms, which promotes the separati30on and transfer processes of photo-generated carriers via the resulting band structure. The efficiency of catalytic activity and selectivity of defective bismuth oxychloride regarding nitric oxide oxidation has been improved. This work clearly reveals the role of hydrogen atoms in defective crystalline materials and provides a promising way to design catalytic materials with controllable defect engineering. Hydrogenated BiOCl shows high performance as a semiconductor photocatalyst, but the mechanism and synergetic effects of hydrogenation are hard to study. Here interactions of oxygen vacancies and hydrogen atoms in BiOCl nanosheets show a modulation of energy dispersion, which leads to both improvements in charge separation and photocatalytic activity.

The impact of thermal history on the kinetic response of thin thermoresponsive diblock copolymer poly(diethylene glycol monomethyl ether methacrylate)-block-poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate), abbreviated as PMEO2MA-b-POEGMA300, films is investigated by in situ neutron reflectivity. The PMEO2MA and POEGMA300 blocks are both thermoresponsive polymers with a lower critical solution temperature. Their transition temperatures (TTs) are around 25 °C (TT1, PMEO2MA) and 60 °C (TT2, POEGMA300). Thus, by applying different temperature protocols (20 to 60 or 20 to 40 to 60 °C), the PMEO2MA-b-POEGMA300 thin films experience different thermal histories: the first protocol directly switches from a swollen to a collapsed state, whereas the second one switches first from a swollen to a semicollapsed and finally to a collapsed state. Although the applied thermal histories differ, the response and final state of the collapsed films are very close to each other. After the thermal stimulus, both films present a complicated response composed of an initial shrinkage, followed by a rearrangement. Interestingly, a subsequent reswelling of the collapsed film is only observed in the case of having applied a thermal stimulus of 20 to 40 °C. The normalized film thickness and the D2O amount of each layer in the PMEO2MA-b-POEGMA300 films are consistent at the end of the two different thermal stimuli. Hence, it can be concluded that the thermal history does not influence the final state of the PMEO2MA-b-POEGMA300 films upon heating. Based on this property, these thin films are especially suitable for the temperature switches on the nanoscale, which may experience different thermal histories.

Interleukin (IL)-1β in the joint cavity increases to promote healing after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Synovial tissue is a major joint microenvironmental regulator after ACL injury. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of synovial cells (SCs) on lysyl oxidase (LOX) and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) production by ACL fibroblasts (ACLfs) in the presence of IL-1β. This study sheds light on the regulation of LOX and MMP-1, -2, -3 expression by ACLfs co-cultured with SCs and treated with IL-1β. LOX and MMP-1, 2, 3 gene/protein expression in IL-1β/stretch-stimulated ACLfs co-cultured with SCs were measured by real-time quantitative PCR and Western blot. Meanwhile, MMP-2 activity was analyzed by zymogram. The results showed that co-culture with SCs increased LOX and MMP-1, -2, -3 gene and protein expression in the presence of IL-1β. Next, ACLfs were subjected to 12% mechanical stretch to simulate pathological injury. Under these conditions, SCs inhibited IL-1β-mediated upregulation of LOXs. However, IL-1β enhanced the expression of MMP-1, -2, -3 in injured ACLfs. SCs can either inhibit or increase LOX production in the presence of IL-1β, while promoting the accumulation of MMP in injured ACLfs. These results may provide crucial insights into the mechanisms underlying ACL poor healing capacity after injury.

Fast ion conduction in solid-state matrices constitutes the foundation for a wide spectrum of electrochemical systems that use solid electrolytes (SEs), examples of which include solid-state batteries (SSBs), solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), and diversified gas sensors. Mixing different solid conductors to form composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) introduces unique opportunities for SEs to possess exceptional overall performance far superior to their individual parental solids, thanks to the abundant chemistry and physics at the new interfaces thus created. In this review, we provide a comprehensive and in-depth examination of the development and understanding of CSEs for SSBs, with special focus on their physiochemical properties and mechanisms of ion transport therein. The origin of the enhanced ionic conductivity in CSEs relative to their single-phase parents is discussed in the context of defect chemistry and interfacial reactions. The models/theories for ion movement in diversified composites are critically reviewed to interrogate a general strategy to the design of novel CSEs, while properties such as mechanical strength and electrochemical stability are discussed in view of their perspective applications in lithium metal batteries and beyond. As an integral component of understanding how ions interact with their composite environments, characterization techniques to probe the ion transport kinetics across different temporal and spatial time scales are also summarized.

While sodium ion (Na+) itself cannot intercalate into graphitic structure to form binary graphite-intercalation-compounds (GICs) as its alkaline brothers (lithium, potassium etc.) do, the intercalation of its solvated form [Na(solvent)x]+ can readily happen, leading to reversible formation of ternary GICs at stage 1, as long as used solvent molecules are stable against reduction, such as ethers. However, a mystery still remains: what causes the initial irreversible capacity loss given that co-intercalation requires an interphase-free surface? In this work, we answered this fundamental question by elaborately examining the solvation structures, desolvation process and the corresponding electrochemical reduction stability of ether-based solvated Na+. Based on the understanding, a simple and effective approach was proposed to significantly increase the initial coulombic efficiency of sodium-ether co-intercalation. Such precise control over solvation-sheath and interfacial structures provides molecular-level guidance to the designing of new electrolyte systems and graphite-intercalation chemistries.

The osteogenic differentiation of human aortic valve interstitial cells (hVICs) is the key cellular mechanism of calcified aortic valve disease (CAVD). This study aimed to explore how curcumin (CCM) inhibits the osteogenic differentiation of hVICs and elucidate the molecular mechanisms involved. In this study, CCM inhibited the osteogenic differentiation of hVICs under osteogenic medium (OM) conditions by reversing the OM-induced increase in calcified nodule formation and osteogenesis-specific markers (ALP and Runx2). RNA sequencing identified 475 common differentially expressed genes with Venn diagrams of the different groups. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment revealed that the CCM inhibition of hVIC osteogenic differentiation was enriched in the NF-κB, PI3K-AKT, TNF, Jak-STAT, and MAPK signaling pathways. In addition, CCM suppressed the phosphorylation of ERK, IκBα, AKT, and interfered with the translocation of P65 into the cell nucleus in hVICs under OM culture conditions. In conclusion, CCM inhibited the osteogenic differentiation of hVICs via interfering with the activation of NF-κB/AKT/ERK signaling pathways. Our findings provide novel insights into a critical role for CCM in CAVD progression and shed new light on CCM-directed therapeutics for CAVD.

Over the past decades, Li-ion battery (LIB) has turned into one of the most important advances in the history of technology due to its extensive and in-depth impact on our life. Its omnipresence in all electric vehicles, consumer electronics and electric grids relies on the precisely tuned electrochemical dynamics and interactions among the electrolytes and the diversified anode and cathode chemistries therein. With consumers' demand for battery performance ever increasing, more and more stringent requirements are being imposed upon the established equilibria among these LIB components, and it became clear that the state-of-the-art electrolyte systems could no longer sustain the desired technological trajectory. Driven by such gap, researchers started to explore more unconventional electrolyte systems. From superconcentrated solvent-in-salt electrolytes to solid-state electrolytes, the current research realm of novel electrolyte systems has grown to unprecedented levels. In this review, we will avoid discussions on current state-of-the-art electrolytes but instead focus exclusively on unconventional electrolyte systems that represent new concepts.
