Functional films have been used in greenhouses to improve the light environment for plant growth. Among them, a spectrum conversion film converting the green light of incident sunlight into red light has been reported to increase the crop productivity. However, the results are not always consistent, and the reasons for the improvement are not fully understood. The objectives of this study were to reveal the cumulative effects of a green-to-red spectrum conversion film (SCF) on the electron transport and photosynthetic performance of Fragaria × ananassa Duch. The photosynthetic efficiency, leaf optical properties, chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence, growth, and fruit qualities when the plant was grown under a transparent polyethylene film (PE) and SCF were evaluated. The sunlight modified by SCF did not change the leaf optical properties and chlorophyll content but significantly increased the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters related to reduction end electron acceptors at PSI acceptor side and the efficiency of electron transport. Without an increase in nonphotochemical quenching, the effective quantum yields of PSII and PSI of leaves grown under SCF were significantly higher than those parameters when grown under PE. Forty eight days after transplanting, the photosynthetic efficiency and photosynthetic rates of leaves and whole plants increased significantly under SCF compared to PE. The vegetative growth was not affected by SCF, but the fruit weight, sweetness, acidity, and firmness under SCF were significantly improved. These results indicated that sunlight modified by SCF stimulates electron flow and improves photosynthetic capacity and fruit quality of Fragaria × ananassa Duch.

Temperature and CO2 concentration affect the yield and quality of mushrooms. In particular, high CO2 concentration due to mushroom respiration induces specific physiological disorders of mushrooms. The objective of this study was to quantify the CO2 emission rate of King Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus eryngii (DC.) Quel) as a function of temperature and growth stage during the cultivation including thinning processes. CO2 emission rates of the substrate including mycelium before and after thinning were significantly different. In the respiration model, the maintenance and CO2 production coefficients of fruit bodies were expressed as quadratic equations according to temperature. The total CO2 emission rate of a bottle of mushroom estimated by the model were validated with measured ones (R 2 = 0.71). The CO2 emission rates of the mushroom showed exponential and quadratical increases with growth stage and temperature at 16 to 25℃, respectively. The CO2 emission rate models developed for King Oyster mushroom can be utilized to control the CO2 concentration and temperature in mushroom cultivation facilities.

Although spectrum conversion films are used to improve the photosynthetic efficiency and, ultimately, crop growth, the effects of the modified spectrum on photosynthetic traits in plants have not yet been sufficiently reported. The objective of this study was to investigate the changes in photosynthetic performance and chlorophyll fluorescence of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) under a green-to-red conversion (GtR) film. The GtR-modified spectrum increased the dry mass and decreased the petiole length. The photosynthetic light-response curves were significantly improved, and the gap of the maximum photosynthetic rates increased over time after covering. The GtR-modified spectrum significantly increased chlorophyll fluorescence parameters in the JIP-test, such as parameters related to the reduction of end electron acceptors on the PSI acceptor side, the efficiency for electron transport in PSII, and the performance indexes. Our data indicated that the GtR-modified spectrum promotes electron transfer around PSI, improving photosynthetic performance and growth.

Rising antibiotic resistance urgently begs for novel targets and strategies for antibiotic discovery. Here, we report that over-activation of the periplasmic DegP protease, a member of the highly conserved HtrA family, can be a viable strategy for antibiotic development. We demonstrate that tripodal peptidyl compounds that mimic DegP-activating lipoprotein variants allosterically activate DegP and inhibit the growth of an Escherichia coli strain with a permeable outer membrane in a DegP-dependent fashion. Interestingly, these compounds inhibit bacterial growth at a temperature at which DegP is not essential for cell viability, mainly by over-proteolysis of newly synthesized proteins. Co-crystal structures show that the peptidyl arms of the compounds bind to the substrate-binding sites of DegP. Overall, our results represent an intriguing example of killing bacteria by activating a non-essential enzyme, and thus expand the scope of antibiotic targets beyond the traditional essential proteins or pathways., Hyunjin Cho et al. show that peptidyl compounds activating the periplasmic DegP protease inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli by promoting the proteolysis of newly synthesized proteins. This study presents an intriguing strategy to combat antibiotic resistance by activating a non-essential bacterial enzyme, thus expanding the scope of traditional antibiotic targets.

UV-B irradiation has been used to enhance the secondary metabolite content in plants, but its spatial effect on plants has not been considered. The objective of this study was to compare spatial photosynthetic traits and bioactive compound accumulation in kale (Brassica oleracea L. var Acephala) according to the distribution and length of UV-B exposure near harvest. Plants were exposed to UV-B of 0-3, 3-6 and 6-9 W m-2 for 4 h per day at 5 days (Exp. 1) and 4.2 W m-2 at 5, 4, 3, 2 or 1 days (Exp. 2) before harvest. In spatial distribution, the higher the UV-B intensity, the lower the mean Fv /Fm (maximal photochemical efficiency of PSII) and the higher the concentration of total flavonoid compound (TFC). With UV-B stress, Fv /Fm and fluorescence transient parameters decreased except for DI0 /CS (dissipated energy flux per cross section) and PIabs (performance index of PSII). When exposed to UV-B radiation for 2 days before harvest, the total phenolic compounds and TFC per plant were highest, not always proportional to the local Fv /Fm but affected by dry weight. Short-term UV-B stress near harvest would be more efficient for the accumulation of bioactive compounds by minimizing the loss of plant weight.

For developing a canopy photosynthesis model, an efficient method to measure the photosynthetic rate in a growth chamber is required. The objective of this study was to develop a method for establishing canopy photosynthetic rate curves of romaine lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) with light intensity and CO2 concentration variables using controlled growth chamber. The plants were grown in plant factory modules, and the canopy photosynthesis rates were measured in sealed growth chambers made of acrylic (1.0 x 0.8 x 0.5 m). First, the canopy photosynthetic rates of the plants were measured, and then the time constants were compared between two application methods: 1) changing light intensity (340, 270, 200, and 130 μmol·m-2·s-1) at a fixed CO2 concentration (1,000 μmol·mol-1) and 2) changing CO2 concentration (600, 1,000, 1,400, and 1,800 μmol·mol-1) at a fixed light intensity (200 μmol·m-2·s-1). Second, the canopy photosynthetic rates were measured by changing the light intensity at a CO2 concentration of 1,000 μmol·mol-1 and compared with those measured by changing the CO2 concentration at a light intensity of 200 μmol·m-2·s-1. The time constant when changing the CO2 concentration at the fixed light intensity was 3.2 times longer, and the deviation in photosynthetic rate was larger than when changing the light intensity. The canopy photosynthetic rate was obtained stably with a time lag of one min when changing the light intensity, while a time lag of six min or longer was required when changing the CO2 concentration. Therefore, changing the light intensity at a fixed CO2 concentration is more appropriate for short-term measurement of canopy photosynthesis using a growth chamber.

Since kale (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala) is one of the healthiest vegetables, its cultivation is increasing for either fresh consumption or as a source for functional foods and nutraceuticals. Plant factories are able to control the environment and trigger the accumulation of bioactive compounds with a stable supply by systematic cultivation methods. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the changes in the total phenolic compounds (TPCs), total flavonoid compounds (TFCs), glucosinolates (GLSs), and antioxidant capacity of kale in a plant factory and to determine an optimal harvest time for the maximum annual production. Two cultivars, namely ‘Manchoo collard’ and ‘Jangsoo collard’, were cultivated in a plant factory and thinned to avoid mutual shading. Both cultivars were harvested every week from 14 to 49 days after transplanting (DAT). The fresh weight (FW), dry weight (DW), projected leaf area (PLA), TPCs, TFCs, GLSs, and antioxidant capacity of both plants were measured every week. The annual production was calculated as follows: DW × the concentration × planting density × cultivation cycles per year. The optimal harvest time was determined based on the continuous phase of the production by modeling. The FW and DW of both cultivars exponentially increased, but the PLA hardly increased at 35 DAT. The TPCs, TFCs, and antioxidant capacity fluctuated or slightly changed, but the amount of substance per plant gradually increased. Their annual production increased with increasing harvest time, and only the production of TPCs in ‘Manchoo collard’ showed a local maximum when harvested at 35–42 DAT. Glucoiberin, sinigrin, and glucobrassicin were the major components of GLSs in both cultivars, and their contents fluctuated. The concentration of total GLSs was the highest at 42 DAT. Additionally, the annual production of the total and major GLSs showed the same results as the TPCs, TFCs, and antioxidant capacity. From the results, the optimum harvest time for production was determined to be 42 DAT.

Pendrin is a transmembrane chloride/anion antiporter that is strongly upregulated in the airways in rhinoviral infection, asthma, cystic fibrosis and chronic rhinosinusitis. Based on its role in the regulation of airway surface liquid depth, pendrin inhibitors have potential indications for treatment of inflammatory airways diseases. Here, a completely regioselective route to tetrahydro-pyrazolopyridine pendrin inhibitors based on 1,3-diketone and substituted hydrazine condensation was been developed. Structure-activity relationships at the tetra hydropyridyl nitrogen were investigated using a focused library, establishing the privileged nature of N-phenyl ureas and improving inhibitor potency by greater than 2-fold.

Cardiac remodeling characterized by cardiac fibrosis is a pathologic process occurring after acute myocardial infarction. Fibrosis can be ameliorated by interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), which is a soluble cytokine showing various effects such as anti-fibrosis, apoptosis, anti-proliferation, immunomodulation, and anti-viral activities. However, the role of IFN-γ in cardiac myofibroblasts is not well established. Therefore, we investigated the anti-fibrotic effects of IFN-γ in human cardiac myofibroblasts (hCMs) in vitro and whether indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), induced by IFN-γ and resulting in cell cycle arrest, plays an important role in regulating the biological activity of hCMs. After IFN-γ treatment, cell signaling pathways and DNA contents were analyzed to assess the biological activity of IFN-γ in hCMs. In addition, an IDO inhibitor (1-methyl tryptophan; 1-MT) was used to assess whether IDO plays a key role in regulating hCMs. IFN-γ significantly inhibited hCM proliferation, and IFN-γ-induced IDO expression caused cell cycle arrest in G0/G1 through tryptophan depletion. Moreover, IFN-γ treatment gradually suppressed the expression of α-smooth muscle actin. When IDO activity was inhibited by 1-MT, marked apoptosis was observed in hCMs through the induction of interferon regulatory factor, Fas, and Fas ligand. Our results suggest that IFN-γ plays key roles in anti-proliferative and anti-fibrotic activities in hCMs and further induces apoptosis via IDO inhibition. In conclusion, co-treatment with IFN-γ and 1-MT can ameliorate fibrosis in cardiac myofibroblasts through apoptosis.

The solid-phase reaction method for preparing forsterite (Mg2SiO4) using the MgO and SiO2 powders has the disadvantages of high reaction temperature, long reaction time, and inhomogeneous reaction depending on the particle size of MgO. Therefore, MgO-based powders with a high reactivity were synthesized using a coprecipitation method with substitutional elements (Mn or Ni), and the effects of processing parameters on synthesizing MgO-based binary composition powders were investigated through the particle characteristics. The crystal structure was changed continuously with the contents and species of substitutional elements, showing the same trend as the atomistic simulation results. The MgO-based powders showed a higher reactivity than the conventional MgO powder, which could be confirmed in the particle characteristics, such as particle size and crystallinity, obtained in a short reaction time and at a relatively low temperature. The optimum composition ratio in the binary composition powder for forming the Mg2SiO4 depended on the type of substitutional element, and the reaction mechanism was identified based on the particle characteristics.

UV-B (280–315 nm) radiation has been used as an effective tool to improve bioactive compound contents in controlled environments, such as plant factories. However, plant structure changes with growth progress induce different positional distributions of UV-B radiation interception, which cause difficulty in accurately evaluating the effects of UV-B on biosynthesis of bioactive compounds. The objective of this study was to quantitatively analyze the positional distributions of UV-B radiation interception and bioactive compound contents of kales (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala) with growth progress and their relationships. Short-term moderate UV-B levels did not affect the plant growth and photosynthetic parameters. Spatial UV-B radiation interception was analyzed quantitatively by using 3D-scanned plant models and ray-tracing simulations. As growth progressed, the differences in absorbed UV-B energy between leaf positions were more pronounced. The concentrations of total phenolic compound (TPC) and total flavonoid compound (TFC) were higher with more cumulative absorbed UV-B energy. The cumulative UV energy yields for TFC were highest for the upper leaves of the older plants, while those for TPC were highest in the middle leaves of the younger plants. Despite the same UV-B levels, the UV-B radiation interception and UV-B susceptibility in the plants varied with leaf position and growth stage, which induced the different biosynthesis of TFC and TPC. This attempt to quantify the relationship between UV-B radiation interception and bioactive compound contents will contribute to the estimation and production of bioactive compounds in plant factories.

Ultraviolet-B (UV-B) acts as a regulatory stimulus, inducing the dose-dependent biosynthesis of phenolic compounds such as flavonoids at the leaf level. However, the heterogeneity of biosynthesis activation generated within a whole plant is not fully understood until now and cannot be interpreted without quantification of UV-B radiation interception. In this study, we analyzed the spatial UV-B radiation interception of kales (Brassica oleracea L. var. Acephala) grown under supplemental UV-B LED using ray-tracing simulation with 3-dimension-scanned models and leaf optical properties. The UV-B-induced phenolic compounds and flavonoids accumulated more, with higher UV-B interception and younger leaves. To distinguish the effects of UV-B energy and leaf developmental age, the contents were regressed separately and simultaneously. The effect of intercepted UV-B on flavonoid content was 4.9-fold that of leaf age, but the effects on phenolic compound biosynthesis were similar. This study confirmed the feasibility and relevance of UV-B radiation interception analysis and paves the way to explore the physical and physiological base determining the intraindividual distribution of phenolic compound in controlled environments.

We previously identified a spiro [piperidine-4,1-pyrido [3,4-b]indole] class of co-potentiators that function in synergy with existing CFTR potentiators such as VX-770 or GLGP1837 to restore channel activity of a defined subset of minimal function cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) mutants. Here, structure-activity studies were conducted to improve their potency over the previously identified compound, 20 (originally termed CP-A01). Targeted synthesis of 37 spiro [piperidine-4,1-pyrido [3,4-b]indoles] was generally accomplished using versatile two or three step reaction protocols with each step having high efficiency. Structure-activity relationship studies established that analog 2i, with 6′-methoxyindole and 2,4,5-trifluorobenzyl substituents, had the greatest potency for activation of N1303K-CFTR, with EC50 ∼600 nM representing an ∼17-fold improvement over the original compound identified in a small molecule screen.

The primary hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD) is the generation of Lewy bodies of which major component is α-synuclein (α-Syn). Because of increasing evidence of the fundamental roles of α-Syn oligomers in disease progression, α-Syn oligomers have become potential targets for therapeutic interventions for PD. One of the potential toxicities of α-Syn oligomers is their inhibition of SNARE-mediated vesicle fusion by specifically interacting with vesicle-SNARE protein synaptobrevin-2 (Syb2), which hampers dopamine release. Here, we show that α-Syn monomers and oligomers cooperatively inhibit neuronal SNARE-mediated vesicle fusion. α-Syn monomers at submicromolar concentrations increase the fusion inhibition by α-Syn oligomers. This cooperative pathological effect stems from the synergically enhanced vesicle clustering. Based on this cooperative inhibition mechanism, we reverse the fusion inhibitory effect of α-Syn oligomers using small peptide fragments. The small peptide fragments, derivatives of α-Syn, block the binding of α-Syn oligomers to Syb2 and dramatically reverse the toxicity of α-Syn oligomers in vesicle fusion. Our findings demonstrate a new strategy for therapeutic intervention in PD and related diseases based on this specific interaction of α-Syn.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is one of the most frequent postoperative complications after liver transplantation (LT). Increased serum ammonia levels due to the liver disease itself may affect postoperative renal function. This study aimed to compare the incidence of postoperative AKI according to preoperative serum ammonia levels in patients after LT. Medical records from 436 patients who underwent LT from January 2010 to February 2020 in a single university hospital were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were then categorized according to changes in plasma creatinine concentrations within 48 h of LT using the Acute Kidney Injury Network criteria. A preoperative serum ammonia level above 45 mg/dL was associated with postoperative AKI (p &lt, 0.0001). Even in patients with a normal preoperative creatinine level, when the ammonia level was greater than 45 &mu, g/dL, the incidence of postoperative AKI was significantly higher (p &lt, 0.0001), the AKI stage was also higher in this group than in the group with preoperative ammonia levels less than or equal to 45 &mu, g/dL (p &lt, 0.0001). Based on the results of our research, an elevation in preoperative serum ammonia levels above 45 &mu, g/dL is related to postoperative AKI after LT.

Although plant responses to artificial lighting spectra often produce abnormal morphogenesis and reduced productivity, no quantification method to determine how plants perceive and respond to light has been available. Our objective in this study was to test whether a plant&rsquo, s spectral perception can be quantified using the light absorption of its major photoreceptors, phytochrome, cryptochrome, and phototropin. We developed an artificial solar lamp and three different light sources, based on a high-pressure sodium lamp, a fluorescent lamp, and red and blue light-emitting diodes, whose absorption by photoreceptors was equal to that of the standard solar spectrum. Cucumber plants grown under the artificial solar and developed light sources showed normal photomorphogenesis and were indistinguishable from each other. Plants grown under unmodified commercial light sources had abnormal photomorphogenesis that made them short and small. The photosynthetic rate was higher under the unmodified light sources, however, dry masses were highest under the artificial solar and modified light sources, indicating that the cucumber plants are optimized to the solar spectrum. Our results clearly demonstrate that the spectral perceptions of plants can be quantified using the light absorption of their photoreceptors, not visual color or spectra. We expect that our findings will contribute to a better understanding of plant perceptions of and responses to light quality, and improve the productivity of plants cultivated under artificial light.

A non-destructive analytical method to measure plant internal electrical conductivity (ECp) was developed to monitor plant responses to changes in environmental conditions. However, the relationship between ECp and plant physiological responses has not yet been established. The objective of the study was to evaluate the relationships among ECp, photosynthetic responses, and sap flow in paprika to monitor ECp in relation to changes in environmental conditions. High ECp levels were related to high photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate. Sap flow in the plant was also associated with ECp with a correlation coefficient of 0.606. However, the sap flow reflected only water flux, while ECp was determined by both water and ion content in stems of paprika. The ECp was predicted using environmental factors including temperature, irradiation, and relative humidity. A comparison of measured and predicted ECps could be used to detect unusual cultivation conditions for paprika such as drought and high temperature. Plant responses to water shortage were reflected by lower ECp compared to the predicted value.

This study was conducted for analyzing the contribution factors on ozone concentrations and its long term trends in each major city and province in Korea through several statistical methods such as simple linear regression, generalized linear model, KZ-filer, correlation matrix, Kringing method, and cluster analysis. The overall ozone levels in South Korea have been consistently increasing over the past 10 years. The ozone concentrations in Seoul, the biggest city in Korea, are the lowest in all areas with the highest increasing ratio for 95th% ozone. It is thought that the active photochemical reaction could affect the higher ozone concentration increase. On the other hand, the ozone concentrations in Jeju are the highest in Korea with the highest increasing ratio for 5th%, 33th%, and 50th% ozone. It is also thought that the weak NOx titration could be the reason of higher ozone concentrations in Jeju. In case of Jeju, transport related factors is the major factor affecting the ozone trend. Thus, it is assumed that the variation of ozone trend of Asian region affecting the ozone trend in Jeju, where domestic ozone photochemical reaction is less active than urban area. It is thought that the photochemical reaction plays the role of increasing of ozone concentrations in the urban area, even though the LRT affected on the increase of ozone concentrations in non-urban area.

Leucyl-tRNA synthetase (LRS) plays major roles in providing leucine-tRNA and activating mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) through intracellular leucine sensing. mTORC1 activated by amino acids affects the influence on physiology functions including cell proliferation, protein synthesis and autophagy in various organisms. Biochemical results demonstrating leucine sensing have been published, but visual results are lacking. Therefore, we observed the location of LRS with and without leucine using stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy one of the super-resolution microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This revealed that LRS was translocated to the lysosome on addition of leucine. The translocation was inhibited by treatment with compound BC-LI-0186, disrupting the interaction between RagD and LRS. Immuno-TEM revealed a clear decrease in LRS translocation to the lysosome on addition of the inhibitor. This direct visualization of leucine sensing and LRS translocation to the lysosome was related to mTORC1 activation. To study the relationship between mTORC1 activation and LRS translocation, we monitored the change in autophagy for each condition using TEM and CLSM. The results showed a decrease in autophagy on addition of leucine, demonstrating crosstalk between leucine sensing, LRS translocation, RagD interaction, and mTORC1 activation.

The spectrum of light affects both the electrical energy consumption by plants and photosynthetic efficiency. In a plant factory, where light-emitting diodes (LEDs) serve as an alternative to solar light, the optimal spectrum of light should be carefully chosen to maximize the rate of photosynthesis and the electrical energy efficiency of the crop. The objectives of this study were to investigate the photosynthetic rate of different colored lettuces (reddish and green leaves), to quantify the spectral dependence of photosynthetic efficiency, and to optimize the LED spectrum for maximum canopy photosynthesis and electrical energy consumption in lettuce grown in a plant factory. Two lettuce cultivars (Lactuca sativa L.), ‘JeokChukMyeon’ and ‘CheongChukMyeon’, were assessed for light absorption and photosynthetic efficiency at the single leaf and canopy levels, and the relative consumption of electrical energy from the LED lights was measured at 18 narrow wavelength bands of 10 nm from 400 to 700 nm. Anthocyanin and chlorophyll content (SPAD value) were measured and correlated with leaf color. Light interception by the canopy was estimated with light transmittance models. The light absorption was similar among the green and reddish lettuce cultivars at most wavelengths, but slightly higher in the reddish leaves around 550 nm (green region). In the reddish leaves, photosynthetic rates per incident photon of a single leaf had two peaks at 650-660 and 400-410 nm, while the photosynthetic rate per absorbed photon had three peaks at 650-660, 400-410, and 540-560 nm. In the green region of the light spectrum, both photosynthetic rates per incident photon and those per absorbed photon were lower in the reddish cultivars than in the green cultivars. The spectral dependence of light absorption at the canopy level was much weaker than that at the single leaf level. The quantum yield and absorption of green light at the canopy level were nearly same as those of blue and red lights, indicating that the photosynthetic efficiency of green light at the canopy level was higher than that at the single leaf level. The relative electrical energy consumption was lower in the green region than in the red and blue regions. Therefore, the photosynthetic efficiency based on electrical energy consumption at the canopy level was much lower with green LEDs than with blue or red LEDs. These results describe the plant response to the light spectrum at the canopy level and can be useful for optimizing artificial lighting sources for maximum plant productivity and energy-savings in a plant factory.

Among abiotic stresses, both drought and UV-B radiation effectively trigger the accumulation of secondary metabolites, and can be widely applied in plant factories. The objectives of this study were to investigate antioxidant accumulation under drought stress alone, or in combination with UV-B radiation near harvest, and to determine an optimal treatment time for maximum antioxidant production. Kale (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala) plants were grown in a plant factory and harvested at 42 days after transplanting. The single and combination treatments lasted for 7 to 1 days and 4 to 2 days before harvest, respectively. The results of both Fv/Fm (maximal photochemical efficiency in photosystem II) and leaf water potential could ensure the function of photosynthesis and maintain normal leaf moisture in single drought treatments of less than 4 days. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant activities were significantly increased in both single and combination treatments for 3 to 4 days, compared to other treatments. The supplementary UV-B treatments showed no extra formation of antioxidants compared to the single drought treatments. As a result, drought for 3 days before harvest could achieve the highest potential value of kale as a source of natural antioxidants.

Photoswitches capable of accessing two geometric states are highly desirable, especially if their design is modular and incorporates a pharmacophore tethering site. We describe a redox isomerization strategy for synthesizing p-formylazobenzenes from p-nitrobenzyl alcohol. The resulting azo-aldehydes can be readily converted to photoswitchable compounds with excellent photophysical properties using simple hydrazide click chemistry. As a proof of principle, we synthesized a photoswitchable surfactant enabling the photocontrol of an emulsion with exceptionally high spatiotemporal precision.

The Cadogan cyclization is a robust but harsh method for the synthesis of 2 H-indazoles, a valuable class of nitrogen heterocycles. Although nitrene generation by exhaustive deoxygenation is widely accepted as the operating mechanism in the reductive cyclization of nitroaromatics, non-nitrene pathways have only been theorized previously. Here, 2 H-indazole N-oxides were synthesized through an interrupted Cadogan/Davis-Beirut reaction and are presented as direct evidence of competent oxygenated intermediates; mechanistic implications for both reactions are discussed. Isolation and characterization of these N-oxides enabled a formal Cadogan cyclization at room temperature for 2 H-indazole synthesis.

A Davis–Beirut reaction inspired nitroso Diels–Alder protocol is reported. The starting material for the procedure is a nitrophenyl moiety with the para position appropriately substituted with a 2°-amine (see 5) or 2°-alcohol (see 6). Deprotonation at the benzylic position followed by concomitant oxidation of the benzylic position and reduction of the nitro moiety delivers a nitrosophenyl intermediate, which subsequently undergoes a nitroso Diels–Alder reaction. This one-pot procedure delivers aryldihydro-1,2-oxazines in moderate yields.

Transmetalation occurs upon addition of GaCl3 to (quinolin-8-yl)trimethylstannane. The compound dissolves immediately in pyridine, and recrystallization gives dichloropyridinyl(quinolin-8-yl)gallium(III). In chloroform, the compound bis-μ-(quinolin-8-yl)-μ-chloro-dichlorodigallium(III) tetrachlorogallate could be isolated in small quantities; however, the major product was trichloro(quinolinium-8-yl)gallate(III) zwitterion. The zwitterion also formed upon addition of methylene chloride or chlorodiphenylmethane. We hypothesize that the highly electrophilic digallyl cation abstracts chloride to form a carbocation and that proton transfer from the carbocation to the quinoline nitrogen affords transient carbenes. Supramolecular complexation of two bio-thiols, homocysteine (Hcys) and cysteine (Cys), by cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) has been fully investigated by 1H NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, isothermal titration calorimetry, and the results were further verified with computational investigations. NMR titration experimental results obviously indicate that the binding stoichiometry of CB[7] to Hcys is 1:1 and to Cys is 1:2 in aqueous solution. The binding constants and thermodynamic parameters associated with the complexation between CB[7] and the bio-thiols were determined by isothermal titration calorimetry. The energy-minimized structures of the supramolecular complexes of CB[7] with Hcys and Cys were determined and provide good agreement with the experimental results. The CB[7] cavity is sufficient to include the two Cys, but is unable to accommodate two Hcys due to steric hindrance. The differing binding abilities of Hcys and Cys in aqueous solution towards CB[7] host may lead to discriminate them.

Transcription by RNA polymerase (RNAP) is coupled with translation in bacteria. Here, we observe the dynamics of transcription and subcellular localization of a specific gene locus (encoding a non-membrane protein) in living E. coli cells at subdiffraction-limit resolution. The movement of the gene locus to the nucleoid periphery correlates with transcription, driven by either E. coli RNAP or T7 RNAP, and the effect is potentiated by translation., Transcription and translation are coupled in bacteria. A concise, one-step route to indazolones from primary alkyl amines and o-nitrobenzyl alcohols is reported. The key step in this readily scalable indazolone forming process involves base-mediated in situ o-nitrobenzyl alcohol → o-nitrosobenzaldehyde conversion. Although this functional group interconversion is known to be useful for 2 H-indazole synthesis, its reactivity was modulated for indazolone formation.

The compound 8-(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)-quinoline was prepared and found to hydrolyze rapidly in air; however, the expected product (quinolin-8-yl)boronic acid was not observed. Instead, the (quinolinium-8-yl)trihydroxyborate zwitterion or an anhydride were observed depending on the conditions of hydrolysis. The two products are related to one another in the degree of hydration, and the two forms could be interconverted. Both hydrolysis products were structurally characterized. Additionally, a commercial sample of ‘8-quinolylboronic acid’ was actually found to be the anhydride. The results call into question whether monomeric (quinolin-8-yl)boronic acid can actually be isolated in the neutral Lewis base-free form.

The moisture content (MC) and electrical conductivity (EC) in substrates are major root-zone environmental factors that affect the transpiration rate and subsequent plant growth in soilless culture. For maintaining optimum root-zone environments, efficient real-time irrigation control is required based on the substrate EC, substrate MC, and transpiration. The objectives of this study were to clarify the relationship between substrate MC and EC and analyze the changes in substrate EC, plant growth, and water use efficiency under different moisture control regimes. Irrigation systems maintaining three regimes of substrate MC (70–85, 60–85, and 50–85%) were set as treatments, and a conventional irrigation using accumulated radiation served as a control. Subsequent changes in the substrate EC and transpiration rate were continuously measured at different substrate MCs, and the relationships between these variables were derived. The transpiration rate was most sensitive to substrate EC at general cultivation conditions of a substrate EC of 2.5 to 4.5 dS·m−1 and a substrate MC of 60 to 85%. The transpiration rate tended to decrease with increasing substrate EC and decreasing substrate MC. More water was consumed in a higher substrate MC, which was controlled within a narrow range of MC. However, substrate EC was well-controlled below 4.5 dS·m−1 in a substrate MC of 70 to 85%. The relationship between the range of substrate MC and the increase in substrate EC was obtained using equations. Although more water was supplied for the control with a substrate MC of 70 to 85%, fruit productivity tended to increase compared to the other substrate MC treatments (60–85 and 50–85%). From the results, it is hypothesized that precise control of root-zone environments can be used to increase fruit productivity and water use efficiency and to minimize plant water stress as well.

Two new substituted polyoxotantalate clusters, [Ti2 Ta8 O28 ](8-) and [Ti12 Ta6 O44 ](10-) , considerably expand the pH range where tantalates persist in aqueous solution. The structures of [Ti2 Ta8 O28 ](8-) and [Ti12 Ta6 O44 ](10-) are reported as tetramethylammonium salts after synthesis at hydrothermal conditions in aqueous solution. These Ti-substituted polyoxotantalate clusters have analogues among recently discovered niobates, but are slightly larger and more persistent in solution. Most importantly, they exhibit a much wider range of pH stability than the familiar hexatantalate cluster, which is the only other tantalate known to be stable at highly basic pH conditions. These molecules are kinetically stable to near-neutral pH, making them excellent synthons for further development into materials and catalysts, and an significant advance in adapting tantalates for use in aqueous solutions.

Reaction options, alkoxide vs hydroxide vs amine addition to the key intermediate (o-nitrosoimine) generated in the Davis–Beirut reaction of an o-nitrobenzyl-amine substrate, are reported to explain the nucleophilic addition selectivity of this one-pot indazole-forming process. The hydroxide addition/deprotection pathway as well as the fate of the resulting o-nitrosobenzaldehyde were both uncovered with several o-nitrobenzylamine substrates, and design elements required for an efficient double Davis–Beirut reaction, inspired by new mechanistic insights, were defined.

Solid niobium phosphate (NbOPO4·xH2O) is well known as a biomass-conversion catalyst, yet the chemical pathways are unclear. Here we report solution chemistry of a new niobophosphate cluster [H3Nb9P5O41]9− that reacts with H2O2 to form peroxo-Nb4P2, and this reaction can be reversed by hydrothermal treatment. We suggest that this cluster is a useful molecular model for the solid.

The discovery of a new variation on the Davis–Beirut reaction is described in which an atypical heterocyclic framework (the anthranil or benzo[c]isoxazole framework) is formed as the result of diversion of a key reactive intermediate away from its usual reactivity – a potentially general approach to reaction design and development. Experimental and computational support for the proposed mechanism and origins of altered reactivity are described.

To compare small bowel distension and bowel wall visualization among three different patients' positions (supine, sitting and right decubitus) during administration of oral contrast media in preparation for CT enterography (CTE).A total of 150 consecutive patients (104 males and 46 females; mean age 34.6 years, range 15-78 years) who were scheduled to undergo CTE were recruited. Patients were randomly allocated into the three position groups during oral contrast media administration, and there were 50 patients in each group. Two blinded radiologists independently scored the luminal distension and visualization of the bowel wall using a continuous 5-point scale (1: worst and 5: best) at the jejunum and ileum. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to evaluate differences between any two groups among the three positions for bowel distension and wall visualization.For ileal distension, the supine and sitting positions performed better than the right decubitus position [for reader 1, mean: 3.4/3.2/2.9 (hereafter, supine/sitting/right decubitus in order), p = 0.002/0.033; for reader 2, 3.3/3.0/2.6, p0.001/0.027]. However, there was no significant difference among the three groups for jejunal distension (for reader 1, 2.4/2.3/2.2; for reader 2, 2.4/2.4/2.2, p0.05, respectively). For bowel wall visualization, the supine and sitting positions were superior to the right decubitus position for the ileum when scored by one reader (4.0/3.8/3.4, p = 0.001/0.015).Supine and sitting positions during the administration of oral contrast media provided better ileal distension than the right decubitus position in obtaining CTE. Advances in knowledge: The performance of CTE largely depends on adequate luminal distension and wall visualization. As the terminal ileum is the predominant site of small bowel pathology for inflammatory bowel disease, the supine or sitting position would be preferable for patients who are suspected of having small bowel pathology.

An Ersup3+/sup-doped ZBLAN glass is used to display a 360° viewable reconstructed image from a hologram on a DMD. The reconstructed image, when the hologram is illuminated by a 852 nm wavelength laser beam, is situated at the inside of the glass, and then a 1530 nm wavelength laser beam is crossed through the image to light it with an upconversion green light, which is viewable at all surrounding directions. This enables us to eliminate the limitation of the viewing zone angle imposed by the finite size of pixels in electro-holographic displays based on digital display chips/panels. The amount of the green light is much higher than that known previously. This is partly caused by the upconversion luminescence induced by 852 and 1530 nm laser beams.

This report presents experimental studies of electrical changes in photovoltaic sensitive elements based on a Por-Si: c-Si heterojunction during the adsorption of acetone molecules in a mixture of pure nitrogen. The porous silicon layer was formed by electrochemical etching on a p-type silicon wafer. The obtained samples were subjected to additional plasma-chemical treatment using hydrogen and fluoride ions after fabrication. Such surface treatment has a stabilizing effect on the electrical properties of the material and increases their adsorption sensitivity to polar molecules. The developed technology allows you to automatically change the sensitivity of photovoltaic sensors during the experiment, depending on the concentration of acetone. These photovoltaic sensors are able to expand the range of measured concentrations from 1 ppm to 10 vol%.

본 연구는 시판중인 에너지음료에 의한 치아 법랑질 침식효과를 알아보기 위하여 선호도가 높은 4종의 에너지음료를 선정하여 산도, 완충능 및 Ca, P 함량을 분석하였다. 또한 에너지음료 침지 전 후의 법랑질의 침식 정도를 표면미세경도와 SEM으로 관찰하여 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 1. 에너지음료의 산성도는 번인텐스에서 $2.78{\pm}0.01$ 로 가장 낮았고 대조군인 증류수에서 $6.475{\pm}0.01$ 로 가장 높았다. 완충능은 번인텐스가 pH 5.5에서 $3.48{\pm}0.155$ 이고, pH 7.0에서는 $1.88{\pm}0.15$ 로 가장 높게 나타났고, 핫식스에서 각각 $1.71{\pm}0.37$ , $1.23{\pm}0.35$ 로 가장 낮게 나타났다. 2. 에너지음료의 칼슘 함유량은 레드불( $77.21{\pm}2.70mg/kg$ )에서 가장 높게 나타났고 핫식스( $0.98{\pm}0.05mg/kg$ )에서 가장 낮게 나타났다. 인의 함유량은 핫식스( $1.34{\pm}0.05mg/kg$ )에서 가장 높게 나타났고, 레드불에서는 검출되지 않았다. 3. 에너지음료 침지 전 후의 법랑질 표면경도 변화는 레드불에서 가장 큰 감소가 나타났고, 다음으로 볼트에너지, 번인텐스, 핫식스 순으로 나타났다. 대조군과 모든 에너지음료 간에는 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 나타냈으나(p 【To find out the effect of commercially available energy drinks on tooth enamel erosion, analyzed pH, buffering capacity, and the content of some of the inorganic components selecting 4 energy drinks that has high affinity of the products currently being sold. Ca content on energy drink was the highest at 'Volt Energy' as ( $77.21{\pm}2.70mg/kg$ ), the lowest at 'Hot6' as ( $0.98{\pm}0.05mg/kg$ ). P content was the highest on 'Hot6'( $1.34{\pm}0.05mg/kg$ ) and detected at 'Red Bull'. Enamel surface hardness variation of the energy drinks before and after immersion showed rapid decrease at 'Red Bull' ( $66.65{\pm}35.60$ ), and 'Volt Energy' ( $61.96{\pm}31.42$ ), 'Burn Intense' ( $58.53{\pm}24.84$ ), 'Hot6' ( $53.99{\pm}60.26$ ) was in order. We propose a waveguide-typed plasmonic mode converter with lateral gold mirrors (LGMs) at a wavelength of 1.55 μm. The 17.5 μm-long gap-s0 mode converter (G-s0 MC) is composed of an input 4.5 μm-wide insulator-metal-insulator-metal-insulator waveguide (IMIMI-W) and an output 2.0 μm-wide metal-insulator-metal waveguide (MIM-W) with LGMs connected by a laterally tapered (LT) IMIMI-W with LGMs. The strip thicknesses of the IMIMI-Ws and MIM-W are 20 nm and 50 nm, respectively. The 12.0 μm-long LGMs with 1.5 μm thickness are located beside the LT-IMIMI-W and MIM-W. All metals in the IMIMI-Ws, MIM-W, and LGMs are designed with gold. A low-loss polymer is used for the 30 μm-thick upper and lower cladding layers. The thickness of the central insulator in both the IMIMI-Ws and MIM-W was designed to be 500 nm. The input Ss0 mode with the size of -5.9 μm x 4.8 μm is converted to the output G-s0 mode with the size of 1.1 μm x 0.5 μm. The total loss of the G-s0 MC, including conversion loss, is -6.96 dB in simulation. The proposed G-s0 MC may be potentially useful for bridging micro- to nano-plasmonic integrated circuits.

Ion imbalance in recycled nutrient solutions is caused by selective ion uptake of plants, which occurs at different rates in different growth stages. The objectives of this study were to investigate the ion balances in both recycled nutrient solutions and rockwool media using different renewal patterns for the nutrient solutions, and to analyze the subsequent effects on uptake of water and nutrients. Over 12 weeks of paprika cultivation, two different renewal patterns (week units) of 6-4-2 and 8-2-2 weeks were compared with a constant renewal pattern of 4-4-4 weeks (control). The nutrient solution in the reservoir tank was constantly maintained at EC 2.5 dS·m -1 and pH 5.5-6.5. The changes in the ion balance with the 4-4-4 week pattern were smaller than those with the other treatments. In the early growth stage, however, the ion balances similarly changed among all treatments. Greater changes were subsequently observed for the 6-4-2 week pattern. Although fruit yield and shoot fresh weight of paprika were the lowest with 6-4-2 renewal pattern, no significant differences were observed. Our results indicate that renewal intervals can be extended in consideration of growth stage for more efficient and practical operations in closed soilless cultures.
