Rationally manipulating the in situ formed catalytically active surface of catalysts remains a tremendous challenge for a highly efficient water electrolysis. Here we present a cationic redox-tuning method to modulate in situ catalyst leaching and to redirect the dynamic surface restructuring of layered LiCoO2–xClx (x = 0, 0.1 or 0.2), for the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Chlorine doping lowered the potential to trigger in situ cobalt oxidation and lithium leaching, which induced the surface of LiCoO1.8Cl0.2 to transform into a self-terminated amorphous (oxy)hydroxide phase during the OER. In contrast, Cl-free LiCoO2 required higher electrochemical potentials to initiate the in situ surface reconstruction to spinel-type Li1±xCo2O4 and longer cycles to stabilize it. Surface-restructured LiCoO1.8Cl0.2 outperformed many state-of-the-art OER catalysts and demonstrated remarkable stability. This work makes a stride in modulating surface restructuring and in designing superior OER electrocatalysts via manipulating the in situ catalyst leaching. Rationally manipulating the in-situ-formed catalytically active surface of catalysts is a challenging but promising endeavour. Now, the surface of LiCoO2 during water oxidation is engineered by Cl doping via a cationic redox-tuning method that modulates in situ leaching and redirects the dynamic surface restructuring.

NDNF selectively labels neurogliaform inhibitory interneurons of layer 1. In this issue of Neuron, Cohen-Kashi Malina et al. (2021) show that NDNF activity is highly correlated with arousal level. During high arousal state, NDNF inhibits the dendrites while disinhibiting the soma of nearby pyramidal neurons.

The first total syntheses of isocorniculatolide B, corniculatolide B, and corniculatolide C, consisting of isomeric corniculatolide skeletons, have been accomplished in a divergent manner. The key features of the synthesis involve the construction of diaryl ether linkages by nucleophilic aromatic substitution, installation of a C14-substituted alkyl side chain via a sequence of Baeyer-Villiger reaction and Claisen rearrangement, and efficient construction of corniculatolide and isocorniculatolide frameworks, including 17-membered (exterior) macrolactone skeletons from a versatile diaryl ether intermediate by Mitsunobu macrolactonization. Moreover, we prepared the structural congeners of isomeric corniculatolides via diverted total synthesis approach including desmethyl analogues and related dimeric macrolides. The anti-inflammatory activities of the synthesized natural products, analogues and synthetic intermediates were also investigated. In particular, corniculatolide B significantly inhibited the protein expression of COX-2 and the mRNA expressions of TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 by inhibiting of NF-κB signaling in intestinal epithelial cells induced by lipopolysaccharide treatment. It also significantly inhibited the promoter activity and the phosphorylation of subunits p50 and p65 of NF-κB to the same extent as Bay 11-7082, a potent IκB kinase inhibitor. These results suggest that corniculatolide B might have therapeutic potential in inflammatory bowel disease via NF-κB signaling pathway.

To achieve practical production of fuel from water, it is essential to develop efficient and durable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). We report here that doping NiCoOOH nanosheets with 8% Ir leads to a low overpotential of only 260 mV for 50 mA/cm2, far better than previous OER catalysts. We synthesized this catalyst using a novel photochemical deposition method that leads to a uniform distribution of dopant, large catalytic active area, high interfacial charge transfer efficiency, good adhesion between catalyst and matrix, and long lifetime. Moreover, these nanosheets show significant stable performance for 70 h in alkaline media. Our density functional theory calculations show that Ir and Co both play essential bifunctional roles in stabilizing the key O radical intermediate on Ir and promoting the O–O bond coupling on Co, which are optimum for the 8% Ir.

Despite numerous reports on the beneficial effects of catechin or epicatechin contained in tea and cacao extract on human health, a conclusive and precise molecular mechanism has not been elucidated. Metabolism of chemical compounds in gut microbiota recently gained significant attention, and extensive studies have been devoted in this field. In conjunction with these results, our group focused on the anti-inflammatory effects of both enantiomers of DHPV (5-(3&prime, 4&prime, dihydroxyphenyl)-&gamma, valerolactone), produced in the intestine by microbiota metabolism, on IEC-6 cells. Divergent and efficient enantioselective synthesis of (S)- and (R)-DHPV was efficiently achieved by cross-metathesis and Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation as a key reaction for four steps in 16% and 14% overall yields, respectively. The anti-inflammatory effects of two enantiomers were tested on IEC-6 cells, and we found that (S)-DHPV was more active than (R)-DHPV. This result implicates that the metabolite produced in the gut has beneficial effects on IEC-6 cells of rat intestines, and the chirality of the metabolite is important for its anti-inflammatory activity. This also provided information for the future discovery of novel small molecular therapeutics for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical to efficient water splitting to produce the H2 fuel for sustainable energy production. Currently, the best non-noble metal OER electrocatalyst in base conditions is the Fe-doped NiOOH (Ni1–xFexOOH), with an overpotential of η = 0.4, but much lower values are desired. We use density functional theory to determine the overall mechanism for the OER of Ni1–xFexOOH, concluding that promoting radical character on the metal–oxo bond is critical to efficient OER. Then we consider replacing Fe with 17 other transition metals of the Fe, Ru, and Os rows, where we find 3 new promising candidates: Co, Rh, and Ir, which we estimate to have η = 0.27, 0.15, and 0.02, respectively, all very much improved performance compared to Fe, making all three systems excellent candidates for experimental testing.

The effect of the catalyst morphology on the growth of carbon nanotubes (CNT) on nanostructured transition metal oxides was investigated to study a novel low-temperature synthetic route to functional CNT–transition metal oxide nanocomposites. Among several nanostructured manganese oxides with various morphologies and structures, only exfoliated 2D nanosheets of layered MnO2 acted as an effective catalyst for the chemical vapor deposition of CNT at low temperatures of 400–500 °C, which emphasizes the critical role of the catalyst morphology in CNT growth. Heat treatment of the MnO2 nanosheets under a C2H2 flow induced the deposition of CNT, as well as a phase transition to a 2D ordered assembly of MnO nanoparticles. The resulting CNT–MnO nanocomposites displayed excellent functionalities in Li-ion electrodes with huge discharge capacities and good rate characteristics, which highlights the usefulness of the present method for studying functional CNT–metal oxide nanocomposites. Electron microscopy and density functional theory calculations propose a formation mechanism via the efficient adsorption of carbon on the MnO2 nanosheets followed by the surface diffusion of carbon. It is of prime importance that the substitution of Fe for layered MnO2 nanosheets remarkably improved the efficiency of the formation of CNT by enhancing the surface adsorption of carbon species. This is the first report of the efficient growth of CNT at a very low temperature of 400 °C. The universal merit of the 2D nanosheet morphology was confirmed by the successful synthesis of a CNT–TiO2 nanocomposite with exfoliated titanate nanosheets. The present study demonstrates that employing exfoliated transition metal oxide nanosheets as catalysts provides an efficient low-temperature synthetic route to functional CNT–transition metal oxide nanocomposites.

To further improve the hydrogen-based energy system, there is an urgent need to replace precious metal-based hydrogen evolution reaction catalysts, including Pt-based materials, with nonprecious metal catalysts for electrochemical production of hydrogen from water. In this work, we propose a novel titanium-doped molybdenum phosphide (Ti–MoP) catalyst. Ti–MoP exhibits a low overpotential of 81.5 mV at 10 mA·cm−2. In particular, the remarkable improvement in material stability and electrochemical durability allows the catalyst to maintain its initial activity after prolonged exposure to air and shows accelerated electrochemical durability testing under acidic conditions. The experimental results and theoretical calculations revealed that the high durability is the result of electronically reduced Mo and P caused by Ti, and the high activity is a result of the optimization of the free energy of hydrogen adsorption (ΔGH) of the abnormally high-valence Ti.

Toward a sustainable carbon cycle, electrochemical conversion of CO2 into valuable fuels has drawn much attention. However, sluggish kinetics and a substantial overpotential, originating from the strong correlation between the adsorption energies of intermediates and products, are key obstacles of electrochemical CO2 conversion. Here we show that 2D covalent metals with a zero band gap can overcome the intrinsic limitation of conventional metals and metal alloys and thereby substantially decrease the overpotential for CO2 reduction because of their covalent characteristics. From first-principles-based high-throughput screening results on 61 2D covalent metals, we find that the strong correlation between the adsorption energies of COOH and CO can be entirely broken. This leads to the computational design of CO2-to-CO and CO2-to-CH4 conversion catalysts in addition to hydrogen–evolution–reaction catalysts. Electrocatalytic CO2 conversion into fuel is a prospective strategy for the sustainable energy production. However, still many parts of the catalyst such as low catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability are challenging. Herein, a hierarchical hexagonal Zn catalyst showed highly efficient and, more importantly, stable performance as an electrocatalyst for selectively producing CO. Moreover, we found that its high selectivity for CO is attributed to morphology. In electrochemical analysis, Zn (101) facet is favorable to CO formation whereas Zn (002) facet favors the H2 evolution during CO2 electrolysis. Indeed, DFT calculations showed that (101) facet lowers a reduction potential for CO2 to CO by more effectively stabilizing a (.) COOH intermediate than (002) facet. This further suggests that tuning the crystal structure to control (101)/(002) facet ratio of Zn can be considered as a key design principle to achieve a desirable product from Zn catalyst.

We present a continuous one-step reaction pathway for optically pure lactide under atmospheric conditions based on a novel SnO2–SiO2 nanocomposite catalyst. The new heterogeneous catalytic system gave a record high lactide yield of 94% with almost 100% enantioselectivity and long-term stability (>2500 h) from L-lactic acid.

The hydrogen (H) spillover phenomenon has attracted considerable attention in the catalysis field. Many researchers have focused on the phenomenon itself, as well as its applications for advanced catalytic systems. In particular, H spillover on non-reducible materials, such as alumina, silica, and zeolites, is a controversial issue owing to the lack of understanding regarding its mechanistic properties. In this study, we use density functional theory calculations to propose the entire mechanism of H spillover from H2 activation on a platinum to its participation in chemical reactions on the external surface of a zeolite. We determined that surface hydroxyl groups of the zeolites, such as Brønsted acid sites, play a role in initiating H spillover, and the Lewis acid sites facilitate the entire process by allowing H to be transferred as a H(+)/e(-) charge pair, as well as providing good binding sites for organic reactants. Theoretical results explain the key experimental features, and we expect that this work will help to elucidate the H spillover phenomenon on non-reducible support materials and to utilize it for catalytic systems.

In order to achieve practical application of electrochemical CO2 conversion technologies, the development of durable catalyst in real water matrix is essential because the use of catalysts only showing high performance within a well-refined environment cannot guarantee their feasibility in realistic conditions. Here, we report a design strategy for a catalyst, which shows excellent tolerance to deactivation factors, using a carbon-based material under more practical condition implemented by real tap water. Screening analyses on various components in tap water elucidated that the impurity group, which can be deposited on the catalyst surface and impede the active sites, such as copper, zinc, and especially iron are the main factors responsible for deactivation. Based on these findings, the structural modified nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube (denoted as ball mill N-CNT) was adopted as a catalyst design to secure durability. Consequently, the ball mill N-CNT revealed tolerance to the disclosed deactivation factors and showed stable performance during unprecedented long-time of 120 h in tap water media.

In this report, we explore the underlying mechanisms by which doped organic thin films as a top hole-selective layer (HSL) improve the performance and stability of colloidal quantum dot (CQD)-based solar cells. Molecular dynamics-based theoretical studies prove that the hydro/oxo-phobic properties of the HSL serve to efficiently passivate the CQD solid. Furthermore, the robust and outstanding electrical properties of the HSL, simultaneously ensure a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and increase the stability performance of CQD-based solar cells. As a result, a best PCE of 11.7% in a lead sulfide (PbS)-based CQD solar cell is achieved and over 90% of the initial performance is retained after 1 year storage under ambient conditions.

Bimetallic PtNi nanoparticles have been considered as a promising electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) owing to their high catalytic activity. However, under typical fuel cell operating conditions, Ni atoms easily dissolve into the electrolyte, resulting in degradation of the catalyst and the membrane-electrode assembly (MEA). Here, we report gallium-doped PtNi octahedral nanoparticles on a carbon support (Ga-PtNi/C). The Ga-PtNi/C shows high ORR activity, marking an 11.7-fold improvement in the mass activity (1.24 A mgPt-1) and a 17.3-fold improvement in the specific activity (2.53 mA cm-2) compare to the commercial Pt/C (0.106 A mgPt-1 and 0.146 mA cm-2). Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that addition of Ga to octahedral PtNi can cause an increase in the oxygen intermediate binding energy, leading to the enhanced catalytic activity toward ORR. In a voltage-cycling test, the Ga-PtNi/C exhibits superior stability to PtNi/C and the commercial Pt/C, maintaining the initial Ni concentration and octahedral shape of the nanoparticles. Single cell using the Ga-PtNi/C exhibits higher initial performance and durability than those using the PtNi/C and the commercial Pt/C. The majority of the Ga-PtNi nanoparticles well maintain the octahedral shape without agglomeration after the single cell durability test (30,000 cycles). This work demonstrates that the octahedral Ga-PtNi/C can be utilized as a highly active and durable ORR catalyst in practical fuel cell applications.

Ion transport is an important issue in electrochemical-based energy conversion and storage devices. Ion transport at the interface of the electrode and electrolyte is critical for performance. However, there is little understanding of the interface phenomena based on ion transport properties. Here, the proton transport behavior in a Nafion membrane (electrolyte) and that of an ionomer in the catalyst layer (electrode/electrolyte interface) was investigated simultaneously by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Our study indicates that the proton transport behavior in the catalyst layer is different from that in membrane. To elucidate the interface phenomena, we analyzed the Nafion electrolyte and proton behavior by molecular dynamics (MD). On the basis of the MD results, we modified the catalyst with a hybrid of inorganic Pt catalyst and organic 3-mercaptopropionic acid to promote a positive interfacial reaction between the electrolyte and electrode, which resulted in improved proton transport and perf...

Continuous on-site electrochemical production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) can provide an attractive alternative to the present anthraquinone-based H2O2 production technology. A major challenge in the electrocatalyst design for H2O2 production is that O2 adsorption on the Pt surface thermodynamically favors “side-on” configuration over “end-on” configuration, which leads to a dissociation of O–O bond via dominant 4-electron pathway. This prefers H2O production rather than H2O2 production during the electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In the present work, we demonstrate that controlled coating of Pt catalysts with amorphous carbon layers can induce selective end-on adsorption of O2 on the Pt surface by eliminating accessible Pt ensemble sites, which allows significantly enhanced H2O2 production selectivity in the ORR. Nitrate (NO3-) is one of the most harmful contaminants in the groundwater, and it causes various health problems. Bimetallic catalysts, usually palladium (Pd) coupled with secondary metallic catalyst, are found to properly treat nitrate-containing wastewaters; however, the selectivity toward N2 production over ammonia (NH3) production still requires further improvement. Because the N2 selectivity is determined at the nitrite (NO2-) reduction step on the Pd surface, which occurs after NO3- is decomposed into NO2- on the secondary metallic catalyst, we here performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experiments to investigate the NO2- reduction pathway on the Pd surface activated by hydrogen. Based on extensive DFT calculations on the relative energetics among ∼100 possible intermediates, we found that NO2- is easily reduced to NO* on the Pd surface, followed by either sequential hydrogenation steps to yield NH3 or a decomposition step to N* and O* (an adsorbate on Pd is denoted using an asterisk). Based on the calculated high migration barrier of N*, we further discussed that the direct combination of two N* to yield N2 is kinetically less favorable than the combination of a highly mobile H* with N* to yield NH3. Instead, the reduction of NO2- in the vicinity of the N* can yield N2O* that can be preferentially transformed into N2 via diverse reaction pathways. Our DFT results suggest that enhancing the likelihood of N* encountering NO2- in the solution phase before combination with surface H* is important for maximizing the N2 selectivity. This is further supported by our experiments on NO2- reduction by Pd/TiO2, showing that both a decreased H2 flow rate and an increased NO2- concentration increased the N2 selectivity (78.6-93.6% and 57.8-90.9%, respectively).

To achieve high catalytic selectivity towards H2O2 from a H2/O2 mixture, HH bonds should be dissociated and OO bonds should be kept intact in the course of the reaction. A major dilemma in catalyst design, however, is that the metal catalysts that dissociate HH bonds have a thermodynamic preference for the dissociation of OO bonds. In this work, the selective dissociation of H2 over O2 was realized by the deposition of H2-selective carbon diffusion layers on a Pt catalyst. Because O2 cannot access the carbon-coated Pt surface, O2 hydrogenation occurs at the carbon surface from spilt-over hydrogen rather than at the Pt surface on which OO dissociation is likely. This leads to the great suppression of OO dissociation, which allows the highly selective synthesis of H2O2. Notably, N-doping of the carbon diffusion layer could increase the selectivity towards H2O2 significantly because of the stabilization of the hydroperoxy radical on the carbon surface.

Understanding the phase separation mechanism of solid-state binary compounds induced by laser–material interaction is a challenge because of the complexity of the compound materials and short processing times. Here we present xenon chloride excimer laser-induced melt-mediated phase separation and surface reconstruction of single-crystal silicon carbide and study this process by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and a time-resolved reflectance method. A single-pulse laser irradiation triggers melting of the silicon carbide surface, resulting in a phase separation into a disordered carbon layer with partially graphitic domains (∼2.5 nm) and polycrystalline silicon (∼5 nm). Additional pulse irradiations cause sublimation of only the separated silicon element and subsequent transformation of the disordered carbon layer into multilayer graphene. The results demonstrate viability of synthesizing ultra-thin nanomaterials by the decomposition of a binary system., Laser beam-induced processing is industrially relevant but often challenging to study in terms of underlying phase transformations. Here authors characterize formation of thin, phase-separated carbon and silicon layers on a silicon carbide substrate by laser-induced melting and solidification.

We report an innovative route for designing novel functional alloys based on first-principles calculations, which is an isoelectronic solid solution (ISS) of two metal elements to create new characteristics that are not native to the constituent elements. Neither Rh nor Ag exhibits hydrogen storage properties, whereas the Rh50Ag50 ISS exhibits properties similar to Pd; furthermore, Au cannot dissociate H2, and Ir has a higher energy barrier for the H2 dissociation reaction than Pt, whereas the Ir50Au50 ISS can dissociate H2 in a similar way to Pt. In the periodic table, Pd is located between Rh and Ag, and Pt is located between Ir and Au, leading to similar atomic and electronic structures between the pure metals (Pd and Pt) and the ISS alloys (Rh50Ag50 and Ir50Au50). From a practical perspective, the Ir-Au ISS would be more cost-effective to use than pure Pt, and could exhibit catalytic activity equivalent to Pt. Therefore, the Ir50Au50 ISS alloy can be a potential catalyst candidate for the replacement of Pt.

CO_2 conversion is an essential technology to develop a sustainable carbon economy for the present and the future. Many studies have focused extensively on the electrochemical conversion of CO_2 into various useful chemicals. However, there is not yet a solution of sufficiently high enough efficiency and stability to demonstrate practical applicability. In this work, we use first-principles-based high-throughput screening to propose silver-based catalysts for efficient electrochemical reduction of CO_2 to CO while decreasing the overpotential by 0.4–0.5 V. We discovered the covalency-aided electrochemical reaction (CAER) mechanism in which p-block dopants have a major effect on the modulating reaction energetics by imposing partial covalency into the metal catalysts, thereby enhancing their catalytic activity well beyond modulations arising from d-block dopants. In particular, sulfur or arsenic doping can effectively minimize the overpotential with good structural and electrochemical stability. We expect this work to provide useful insights to guide the development of a feasible strategy to overcome the limitations of current technology for electrochemical CO_2 conversion.

Hydrogen spillover has been studied for several decades, but its nature, catalytic functions and even its existence remain topics of vigorous debate. This is a consequence of the lack of model catalysts that can provide direct evidences of the existence of hydrogen spillover and simplify the catalytic interpretation. Here we use platinum encapsulated in a dense aluminosilicate matrix with controlled diffusional properties and surface hydroxyl concentrations to elucidate the catalytic functions of hydrogen spillover. The catalytic investigation and theoretical modelling show that surface hydroxyls, presumably Brønsted acids, are crucial for utilizing the catalytic functions of hydrogen spillover on the aluminosilicate surface. The catalysts with optimized nanostructure show remarkable activities in hydro-/dehydrogenation, but virtually no activity for hydrogenolysis. This distinct chemoselectivity may be beneficial in industrially important hydroconversions such as propane dehydrogenation to propylene because the undesired hydrogenolysis pathway producing light hydrocarbons of low value (methane and ethane) is greatly suppressed.

We introduce a multiscale framework based on molecular dynamic (MD) simulation, micromechanics, and finite element method (FEM). A micromechanical model, which considers influences of the interface properties, nanoparticle (NP) size, and microcracks, is developed. Then, we perform MD simulations to characterize the mechanical properties of the nanocomposite system (silica/nylon 6) with varying volume fraction and size of NPs. By comparing the MD with micromechanics results, intrinsic physical properties at interfacial region are derived. Finally, we implement the developed model in the FEM code with the derived interfacial parameters, and predict the mechanical behavior of the nanocomposite at the macroscopic scale.
