Industrial purification of biomolecules is commonly based on a sequence of chromatographic processes, which are adapted slightly to new target components, as the time to market is crucial. To improve time and material efficiency, modeling is increasingly used to determine optimal operating conditions, thus providing new challenges for current and future bioengineers. At the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), mechanistic modeling of protein chromatography has long been part of the curriculum of the Bioengineering master's degree program, supported by exercises using simulation software. Emphasis lies on nonlinear preparative chromatography, where the result strongly depends on the sample concentration. For undergraduate students to gain hands-on experience in model-based optimization, a three-week, in-depth laboratory course was designed on the purification of a ternary mixture of proteins using ion-exchange chromatography and mechanistic modeling. Students apply in-house software ChromX, which is made available for download, together with tutorials on numerics and practical applications. This article presents the working principle of ChromX and results of the laboratory course for undergraduate students.

High‐entropy materials have drawn much attention as battery materials due to their distinctive properties. Lithiated high‐entropy oxide (Li0.33(MgCoNiCuZn)0.67O, LiHEO) exhibits both high lithium‐ion and electronic conductivity, making it a potential coating material for layered Ni‐rich oxide cathodes (Li1+x(Ni1−y−zCoyMnz)1−xO2, NCM or NMC) in conventional Li‐ion battery cells; however, high‐temperature synthesis limits its application. Therefore, a photonic curing strategy is used for synthesizing LiHEO and the non‐lithiated form (denoted as high‐entropy oxide [HEO]), and nanoscale coatings are successfully produced on LiNi0.85Co0.1Mn0.05O2 (NCM851005) particles. To one's knowledge, this is the first report on particle coating with high‐entropy materials using photonic curing. NCM851005 with LiHEO‐modified surface shows good cycling stability, with a capacity retention of 97% at 1 C rate after 200 cycles. The improvement in electrochemical performance is attributed to the conformal coating that prevents structural changes caused by the reaction between cathode material and liquid electrolyte. Compared to bare NCM851005, the coated material shows a significantly reduced tendency for intergranular cracking, successfully preventing electrolyte penetration and suppressing side reactions. Overall, photonic curing presents a novel cost‐ and energy‐efficient synthesis and coating procedure that paves the way for surface modification of any heat‐sensitive material for a wide range of applications.

This study presents an innovative lateral flow microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) designed for conducting quantitative paper-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (p-ELISA), seamlessly executing conventional ELISA steps in a paper-based format. The p-ELISA device utilizes a passive fluidic circuit with functional elements such as a multi-bi-material cantilever (B-MaC) assembly, delay channels, and a buffer zone, all enclosed within housing for autonomous, sequential loading of critical reagents onto the detection zone. This novel approach not only demonstrates a rapid assay completion time of under 30 min, but also boasts reduced reagent requirements, minimal equipment needs, and broad applicability across clinical diagnostics and environmental surveillance. Through detailed descriptions of the design, materials, and fabrication methods for the multi-directional flow assay (MDFA), this manuscript highlights the device’s potential for complex biochemical analyses in a user-friendly and versatile format. Analytical performance evaluation, including a limit of detection (LOD) of 8.4 pM for Rabbit IgG, benchmarks the device’s efficacy compared to existing p-ELISA methodologies. This pioneering work lays the groundwork for future advancements in autonomous diagnostics, aiming to enhance global health outcomes through accessible and reliable testing solutions.

The factors correlating to the student success in physical chemistry courses are investigated. The influence of mathematics ability on student performance in class is examined.

Powering aircraft by sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) is a pathway to reduce the climate impact of aviation by lowering aviation lifecycle CO2 emissions and by reducing ice crystal numbers and radiative forcing from contrails. While the effect of SAF blends on contrails has been measured previously, here we present novel measurements on particle emission and contrails from 100 % SAF combustion. During the ECLIF3 (Emission and CLimate Impact of alternative Fuels) campaign, a collaboration between the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR), Airbus, Rolls-Royce, and Neste, the DLR Falcon 20 research aircraft performed in situ measurements following an Airbus A350-941 source aircraft powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-84 engines in 1 to 2 min old contrails at cruise altitudes. Apparent ice emission indices of 100 % HEFA-SPK (hydro-processed esters and fatty acids–synthetic paraffinic kerosene) were measured and compared to Jet A-1 fuel contrails at similar engine and ambient ice-supersaturated conditions within a single flight. A 56 % reduction in ice particle numbers per mass of burned fuel was measured for 100 % HEFA-SPK compared to Jet A-1 under engine cruise conditions. The measured 35 % reduction in soot particle numbers suggests reduced ice activation by the low-sulfur HEFA fuel. Contrail properties are consistently modeled with a contrail plume model. Global climate model simulations for the 2018 fleet conservatively estimate a 26 % decrease in contrail radiative forcing and stronger decreases for larger particle reductions. Our results indicate that higher hydrogen content fuels as well as clean engines with low particle emissions may lead to reduced climate forcing from contrails.

Lithium‐excess cation‐disordered rocksalt materials are a promising class of transition metal‐based cathodes that exhibit high specific capacity and energy density. The exceptional performance is achieved through participation of anionic redox in addition to cationic redox reactions in the electrochemistry. However, anionic redox reactions accompanied by oxygen evolution, accelerated electrolyte breakdown, and structural evolution lead to voltage hysteresis and low initial Coulombic efficiency. Herein, an Al2O3 layer with varying thickness has been coated onto a high‐entropy disordered rocksalt oxyfluoride cathode through atomic layer deposition to enhance battery performance. The results indicate that the utilization of a uniform Al2O3 coating improves the capacity retention and rate capability of the cathode, with the performance being strongly dependent on the layer thickness. Further investigation into cathode–electrolyte interfacial reactions reveals that the thin protecting Al2O3 coating can reduce the decomposition of electrolyte on the cathode surface but cannot prevent bulk phase degradation during prolonged cycling. These findings highlight the need for optimized coating design on the disordered rocksalt cathode to improve battery performance.

Despite their proven importance for the atmospheric radiative energy budget, the effect of cirrus on climate and the magnitude of their modification by human activity is not well quantified. Besides anthropogenic pollution sources on the ground, aviation has a large local effect on cirrus microphysical and radiative properties via the formation of contrails and their transition to contrail cirrus. To investigate the anthropogenic influence on natural cirrus, we compare the microphysical properties of cirrus measured at mid-latitude (ML) regions (∘ N) that are often affected by aviation and pollution with cirrus measured in the same season in comparatively pristine high latitudes (HLs; ≥60∘ N). The number concentration, effective diameter, and ice water content of the observed cirrus are derived from in situ measurements covering ice crystal sizes between 2 and 6400 µm collected during the CIRRUS-HL campaign (Cirrus in High Latitudes) in June and July 2021. We analyse the dependence of cirrus microphysical properties on altitude and latitude and demonstrate that the median ice number concentration is an order of magnitude larger in the measured mid-latitude cirrus, with 0.0086 cm−3, compared to the high-latitude cirrus, with 0.001 cm−3. Ice crystals in mid-latitude cirrus are on average smaller than in high-latitude cirrus, with a median effective diameter of 165 µm compared to 210 µm, and the median ice water content in mid-latitude cirrus is higher (0.0033 g m−3) than in high-latitude cirrus (0.0019 g m−3). In order to investigate the cirrus properties in relation to the region of formation, we combine the airborne observations with 10 d backward trajectories to identify the location of cirrus formation and the cirrus type, i.e. in situ or liquid origin cirrus, depending on whether there is only ice or also liquid water present in the cirrus history, respectively. The cirrus formed and measured at mid-latitudes (M–M) have a particularly high ice number concentration and low effective diameter. This is very likely a signature of contrails and contrail cirrus, which is often observed in the in situ origin cirrus type. In contrast, the largest effective diameter and lowest number concentration were found in the cirrus formed and measured at high latitudes (H–H) along with the highest relative humidity over ice (RHi). On average, in-cloud RHi was above saturation in all cirrus. While most of the H–H cirrus were of an in situ origin, the cirrus formed at mid-latitudes and measured at high latitudes (M–H) were mainly of liquid origin. A pristine Arctic background atmosphere with relatively low ice nuclei availability and the extended growth of few nucleated ice crystals may explain the observed RHi and size distributions. The M–H cirrus are a mixture of the properties of M–M and H–H cirrus (preserving some of the initial properties acquired at mid-latitudes and transforming under Arctic atmospheric conditions). Our analyses indicate that part of the cirrus found at high latitudes is actually formed at mid-latitudes and therefore affected by mid-latitude air masses, which have a greater anthropogenic influence.

Due to their fast evolution and large natural variability in macro- and microphysical properties, the accurate representation of boundary layer clouds in current climate models remains a challenge. One of the regions with large intermodel spread in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 ensemble is the western North Atlantic Ocean. Here, statistically representative in situ measurements can help to develop and constrain the parameterization of clouds in global models. To this end, we performed comprehensive measurements of boundary layer clouds, aerosol, trace gases, and radiation in the western North Atlantic Ocean during the NASA Aerosol Cloud meTeorology Interactions oVer the western ATlantic Experiment (ACTIVATE) mission. In total, 174 research flights with 574 flight hours for cloud and precipitation measurements were performed with the HU-25 Falcon during three winter (February–March 2020, January–April 2021, and November 2021–March 2022) and three summer seasons (August–September 2020, May–June 2021, and May–June 2022). Here we present a statistical evaluation of 16 140 individual cloud events probed by the fast cloud droplet probe and the two-dimensional stereo cloud probe during 155 research flights in a representative and repetitive flight strategy allowing for robust statistical data analyses. We show that the vertical profiles of distributions of the liquid water content and the cloud droplet effective diameter (ED) increase with altitude in the marine boundary layer. Due to higher updraft speeds, higher cloud droplet number concentrations (Nliquid) were measured in winter compared to summer despite lower cloud condensation nucleus abundance. Flight cloud cover derived from statistical analysis of in situ data is reduced in summer and shows large variability. This seasonal contrast in cloud coverage is consistent with a dominance of a synoptic pattern in winter that favors conditions for the formation of stratiform clouds at the western edge of cyclones (post-cyclonic). In contrast, a dominant summer anticyclone is concomitant with the occurrence of shallow cumulus clouds and lower cloud coverage. The evaluation of boundary layer clouds and precipitation in the Nliquid ED phase space sheds light on liquid, mixed-phase, and ice cloud properties and helps to categorize the cloud data. Ice and liquid precipitation, often masked in cloud statistics by a high abundance of liquid clouds, is often observed throughout the cloud. The ACTIVATE in situ cloud measurements provide a wealth of cloud information useful for assessing airborne and satellite remote-sensing products, for global climate and weather model evaluations, and for dedicated process studies that address precipitation and aerosol–cloud interactions.

ACE inhibitors, sartans, and sacubitril are among the most important drugs for the prevention of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. At the same time, they are known to cause non-allergic bradykinin-mediated angioedema, a potentially fatal swelling of the mucosa and/or submucosa and deeper skin without signs of urticaria or pruritus, occurring mainly in the head and neck region. In contrast with hereditary angioedema, which is also mediated by bradykinin, angioedema triggered by these drugs is by far the most common subtype of non-allergic angioedema. The molecular mechanisms underlying this type of angioedema, which are discussed here, are not yet sufficiently understood. There are a number of approved drugs for the prevention and treatment of acute attacks of hereditary angioedema. These include inhibitors of bradykinin synthesis that act as kallkrein inhibitors, such as the parenterally applied plasma pool, and recombinant C1 esterase inhibitor, ecallantide, lanadelumab, and the orally available berotralstat, as well as the bradykinin receptor type 2 antagonist icatibant. In contrast, no diagnostic tools, guidelines, or treatments have yet been approved for the diagnosis and treatment of acute non-allergic drug-induced angioedema, although it is more common and can take life-threatening courses. Approved specific drugs and a structured diagnostic workflow are needed for this emergency diagnosis.

Reflection of solar radiation by tropical low-level clouds has an important cooling effect on climate and leads to decreases in surface temperatures. Still, the effect of pollution on ubiquitous tropical continental low-level clouds and the investigation of the related impact on atmospheric cooling rates are poorly constrained by in situ observations and modeling, in particular during the West African summer monsoon season. Here, we present comprehensive in situ measurements of microphysical properties of low-level clouds over tropical West Africa, measured with the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) aircraft Falcon 20 during the DACCIWA (Dynamics–Aerosol–Chemistry–Cloud Interactions in West Africa) campaign in June and July 2016. Clouds below 1800 m altitude, identified as boundary layer clouds, were classified according to their carbon monoxide (CO) pollution level into pristine and less polluted clouds (CO < 135 ppbv) and polluted low-level clouds (CO > 155 ppbv) as confirmed by the linear CO to accumulation aerosol number concentration correlation. Whereas slightly enhanced aerosol background levels from biomass burning were measured across the entire area, clouds with substantially enhanced aerosol levels were measured in the outflow of major coastal cities, as well as over rural conurbations in the hinterlands. Here we investigate the impact of pollution on cloud droplet number concentration and size during the West African monsoon season. Our results show that the cloud droplet number concentration (CDNC) measured in the size range from 3 to 50 µm around noon increases by 26 % in the elevated aerosol outflow of coastal cities and conurbations with elevated aerosol loadings from median CDNC of 240 cm−3 (52 to 501 cm−3 interquartile range) to 324 cm−3 (60 to 740 cm−3 interquartile range). Higher CDNC resulted in a 17 % decrease in effective cloud droplet diameter from a median deff of 14.8 µm to a deff of 12.4 µm in polluted clouds. Radiative transfer simulations show a non-negligible influence of higher droplet number concentrations and smaller particle sizes on the diurnally averaged (noon) net radiative forcing at the top of atmosphere of −3.9 W m−2 (−16.3 W m−2) of polluted with respect to less polluted clouds and lead to a change in instantaneous heating rates of −22.8 K d−1 (−17.7 K d−1) at the top of clouds. Thus, the atmospheric cooling by low-level clouds increases only slightly in the polluted case due to the already elevated background aerosol concentrations. Additionally, the occurrence of mid- and high-level cloud layers atop buffer this effect further, so that the net radiative forcing and instantaneous heating rate of low-level clouds turn out to be less sensitive towards projected future increases in anthropogenic pollution in West Africa.

Abstract Multiphysics modeling enables probing of conditions inside a CO2 electrolyzer that are difficult to measure, such as local concentrations and pH, as well as rapid testing of possible design changes. A one‐dimensional model for a zero‐gap membrane electrode assembly (MEA) CO2 electrolyzer was developed with the assumption that catalyst layers interact with the membrane ionomer such that the ionomer affects the underlying kinetics. The kinetics for bicarbonate reacting to form hydrogen are fit using a planar electrode model for silver with an ionomer coating. The MEA model results are validated against experimental studies for current density and product selectivity. Flooding of the cathode is modeled using saturation curves, and results show that blocked pores in the microporous layer play a significant role in limiting the mass transport at high potentials (>2.8 V). Sensitivity studies showed that CO Faradaic efficiency can be increased by decreasing catalyst layer thickness and porosity, and decreasing KHCO3 concentration.

Airborne in situ cloud measurements were carried out over the northern Fram Strait between Greenland and Svalbard in spring 2019 and summer 2020. In total, 811 min of low-level cloud observations were performed during 20 research flights above the sea ice and the open Arctic ocean with the Polar 5 research aircraft of the Alfred Wegener Institute. Here, we combine the comprehensive in situ cloud data to investigate the distributions of particle number concentration N, effective diameter Deff, and cloud water content CWC (liquid and ice) of Arctic clouds below 500 m altitude, measured at latitudes between 76 and 83∘ N. We developed a method to quantitatively derive the occurrence probability of their thermodynamic phase from the combination of microphysical cloud probe and Polar Nephelometer data. Finally, we assess changes in cloud microphysics and cloud phase related to ambient meteorological conditions in spring and summer and address effects of the sea ice and open-ocean surface conditions. We find median N from 0.2 to 51.7 cm−3 and about 2 orders of magnitude higher N for mainly liquid clouds in summer compared to ice and mixed-phase clouds measured in spring. A southerly flow from the sea ice in cold air outbreaks dominates cloud formation processes at temperatures mostly below −10 ∘C in spring, while northerly warm air intrusions favor the formation of liquid clouds at warmer temperatures in summer. Our results show slightly higher N in clouds over the sea ice compared to the open ocean, indicating enhanced cloud formation processes over the sea ice. The median CWC is higher in summer (0.16 g m−3) than in spring (0.06 g m−3), as this is dominated by the available atmospheric water content and the temperatures at cloud formation level. We find large differences in the particle sizes in spring and summer and an impact of the surface conditions, which modifies the heat and moisture fluxes in the boundary layer. By combining microphysical cloud data with thermodynamic phase information from the Polar Nephelometer, we find mixed-phase clouds to be the dominant thermodynamic cloud phase in spring, with a frequency of occurrence of 61 % over the sea ice and 66 % over the ocean. Pure ice clouds exist almost exclusively over the open ocean in spring, and in summer the cloud particles are most likely in the liquid water state. The comprehensive low-level cloud data set will help us to better understand the role of clouds and their thermodynamic phase in the Arctic radiation budget and to assess the performance of global climate models in a region of the world with the strongest anthropogenic climate change.

Biomimetic N-acetylcysteamine thioesters are essential for the study of polyketide synthases, non-ribosomal peptide synthetases and fatty acid synthases. The chemistry for their preparation is, however, limited by their specific functionalization and their susceptibility to undesired side reactions. Here we report a method for the rapid preparation of N-acetylcysteamine (SNAC) 7-hydroxy-2-enethioates, which are suitable for the study of various enzymatic domains of megasynthase enzymes. The method is based on a one-pot sequence of hydroboration and the Suzuki–Miyaura reaction. The optimization of the reaction conditions made it possible to suppress potential side reactions and to introduce the highly functionalized SNAC methacrylate unit in a high yield. The versatility of the sequence was demonstrated by the synthesis of the complex polyketide-SNAC thioesters 12 and 33. Brown crotylation followed by the hydroboration to Suzuki–Miyaura reaction sequence enabled the introduction of the target motif in significantly fewer steps and with a higher overall yield and stereoselectivity than previously described approaches. This is the first report of a transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction in the presence of an SNAC thioester.

With respect to efficient use of diminishing or harder to reach energy resources, the catalysis of processes that will otherwise require high overpotentials is a very important application in today's world. As a newly developed class of materials, high‐entropy sulfides (HESs) are promising electrocatalysts for a variety of different reactions. In this report, HESs containing five or six transition metals are synthesized in a one‐step mechanochemical process. Seven HESs of Pnma (M:S≈1:1) and three Pa‐3 (M:S = 1:2) structures are investigated as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The performances and properties of the HESs with different compositions and structures are compared with each other and with commercial IrO2 as reference material, in terms of OER overpotential, Tafel slope, electrochemically active surface area, ionic conductivity, and durability. The structural and chemical properties of these HESs are determined by X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy. Most of the HESs show excellent and promising performance as OER electrocatalysts under alkaline conditions, and outperform the reference OER catalyst IrO2.

Dynamic searchable symmetric encryption (DSSE) enables searches over encrypted data as well as data dynamics such as flexible data addition and deletion operations. A major security concern in DSSE is how to preserve forward and backward privacy, which are typically achieved by removing the linkability between the newly added data and previous queries, and between the deleted data and future queries, respectively. After information leakage types were formally defined for different levels of backward privacy (i.e., Type-I, II, III), many backward private DSSE schemes have been constructed under the definitions. However, we observed that the backward privacy can be violated by leveraging additional secondary leakage, which is typically leaked in specific constructions of schemes in spite of their theoretical guarantees. In this paper, in order to understand the security gap between the theoretical definitions and practical constructions, we conduct an in-depth analysis of the root cause for the secondary leakage, and demonstrate how it can be abused to violate Type-II backward privacy (e.g., the exposure of the deletion history) of DSSE constructions in practice. We then propose a novel Type-II backward private DSSE scheme based on Intel SGX, which is resilient to the secondary leakage abuse attack. According to the comparative analysis of our scheme with the state-of-the-art SGX-based DSSE schemes, Bunker-B (EuroSec’19) and SGX-SE1 (ACNS’20), our scheme shows higher efficiency in terms of the search latency with a negligible utility loss under the same security level (cf. Bunker-B) while showing similar efficiency with a higher security level (cf. SGX-SE1). Finally, we formally prove that our scheme guarantees Type-II backward privacy.

Ionic liquids are materials composed purely of cations and anions which melt at or below 100 ∘C. For applications involving wetting of a solid surface by an ionic liquid or the flow of ionic liquid through capillaries, one must know the wetting properties of the ionic liquid/solid pair, such as the contact angle (θ). Herein, the use of a (numerical) theoretical model of capillary rise kinetics for describing the experimental data of meniscus height versus time for a particular ionic liquid (BMI.BF4) rising in a glass capillary tube is reported, assessing also the suitability of estimating the ionic liquid/glass contact angle (θ) from the fitting procedure involved. Capillary rise experiments were conducted in glass capillaries with 1 mm internal diameter and digital images from the corresponding videos (obtained with an smartphone high-resolution camera and a LED light box) were semi-automatically processed/analyzed using an algorithm (script) specifically developed for such purpose. A relatively good agreement between the experimental data and the theoretical predictions was found for the ionic liquid (BMI.BF4) studied, in particular with respect to the shape of the height versus time curve. From fitting the theoretical model to the experimental data, a value of 43.7±6.4∘ was obtained for the contact angle (θ) of BMI.BF4 in glass at a temperature of 23.7±0.4∘C. The results obtained validated the utilized methodology for determining the contact angle of ionic liquids in (transparent) solid surfaces and also showed its adequacy for studying the kinetics of capillary rise of such liquids in small vertical capillaries.

Abstract Phenylene-bridged, TIPS-alkynylated azaacenes are excellent materials for selective gas sorption. In this study, we utilized 195 MHz high-fundamental-frequency quartz crystal microbalances, coated with cyclic azaacenes, and determined their affinity towards hazardous and narcotics-related compounds such as benzene, γ-butyrolactone (GBL) or safrole. Computational investigations by extended tight binding intermolecular force field allowed better understanding of the determined unique features. Remarkable selective affinities were found towards GBL and safrole – both dangerous compounds which can be abused as precursors for narcotics. With these systematic approaches, we were able to get a better insight into the selective adsorption and how to design better affinity materials

To determine the impact of dynamic and aerosol processes on marine low clouds, we examine the seasonal impact of updraft speed w and cloud condensation nuclei concentration at 0.43 % supersaturation (NCCN0.43%) on the cloud droplet number concentration (NC) of low-level clouds over the western North Atlantic Ocean. Aerosol and cloud properties were measured with instruments on board the NASA LaRC Falcon HU-25 during the ACTIVATE (Aerosol Cloud meTeorology Interactions oVer the western ATlantic Experiment) mission in summer (August) and winter (February–March) 2020. The data are grouped into different NCCN0.43% loadings, and the density functions of NC and w near the cloud bases are compared. For low updrafts (w < 1.3 m s−1), NC in winter is mainly limited by the updraft speed and in summer additionally by aerosols. At larger updrafts (w > 3 m s−1), NC is impacted by the aerosol population, while at clean marine conditions cloud nucleation is aerosol-limited, and for high NCCN0.43% it is influenced by aerosols and updraft. The aerosol size distribution in winter shows a bimodal distribution in clean marine environments, which transforms to a unimodal distribution in high NCCN0.43% due to chemical and physical aerosol processes, whereas unimodal distributions prevail in summer, with a significant difference in their aerosol concentration and composition. The increase of NCCN0.43% is accompanied with an increase of organic aerosol and sulfate compounds in both seasons. We demonstrate that NC can be explained by cloud condensation nuclei activation through upwards processed air masses with varying fractions of activated aerosols. The activation highly depends on w and thus supersaturation between the different seasons, while the aerosol size distribution additionally affects NC within a season. Our results quantify the seasonal influence of w and NCCN0.43% on NC and can be used to improve the representation of low marine clouds in models.

Different extraction pH values obtain polysaccharides with tailored structures and novel functionalities. This study investigated the influence of different extraction pH values (4.2, 6.8, and 9.2) on the physicochemical compositions and structural and functional properties of okra leaf polysaccharides (OLPs). The extraction yield (2.74–7.34%), molecular weights (68.5–85.4 kDa), total sugar contents (64.87–95.68%), degree of acetylation (18.28–22.88%), and methylation (8.97–15.20%) of OLPs varied significantly (p < 0.05). The monosaccharide composition reflected OLPs as pectic polysaccharides, with varied compositions of galacturonic acid, galactose, rhamnose, and arabinose. However, the differences in their sugar molar ratios, such as their side-chain and backbone chain compositions, greatly affected their functional properties. Additionally, notable differences due to extraction pH were observed in physical properties, thermal stability, and crystallinity. However, FTIR and NMR spectra revealed that extraction pH had negligible effects on the primary structure of OLPs. All OLPs showed non-Newtonian fluid behavior in the aqueous system with different apparent viscosities correlating with their molecular weights. Furthermore, the OLPs fractions stabilized oil-in-water emulsions differently and had distinct radical scavenging activities related to their compositions. This study provides a basis for selecting appropriate extraction pH to prepare OLPs with specific characteristics and applications in food-related disciplines.

During the West African summer monsoon, pollutants emitted in urbanized coastal areas modify cloud cover and precipitation patterns. The Dynamics-Aerosol-Chemistry-Cloud Interactions in West Africa (DACCIWA) field campaign provided numerous aircraft-based and ground-based observations, which are used here to evaluate two experiments made with the coupled WRF–CHIMERE model, integrating both the direct and indirect aerosol effect on meteorology. During one well-documented week (1–7 July 2016), the impacts of anthropogenic aerosols on the diurnal cycle of low-level clouds and precipitation are analyzed in detail using high and moderate intensity of anthropogenic emissions in the experiments. Over the continent and close to major anthropogenic emission sources, the breakup time of low-level clouds is delayed by 1 hour, and the daily precipitation rate decreased by 7.5 % with the enhanced anthropogenic emission experiment (with high aerosol load). Despite the small modifications on daily average of low-level cloud cover (+2.6 %) with high aerosol load compared to moderate, there is an increase by more than 20 % from 14:00 to 22:00 UTC on hourly average. Moreover, modifications of the modeled low-level cloud and precipitation rate occur far from the major anthropogenic emission sources, to the south over the ocean and to the north up to 11∘ N. The present study adds evidence to recent findings that enhanced pollution levels in West Africa may reduce precipitation.

Sustainable aviation fuels can reduce contrail ice numbers and radiative forcing by contrail cirrus. We measured apparent ice emission indices for fuels with varying aromatic content at altitude ranges of 9.1–9.8 and 11.4–11.6 km. Measurement data were collected during the ECLIF II/NDMAX flight experiment in January 2018. The fuels varied in both aromatic quantity and type. Between a sustainable aviation fuel blend and a reference fuel Jet A-1, a maximum reduction in apparent ice emission indices of 40 % was found. We show vertical ice number and extinction distributions for three different fuels and calculate representative contrail optical depths. Optical depths of contrails (0.5–3 min in age) were reduced by 40 % to 52 % for a sustainable aviation fuel compared to the reference fuel. Our measurements suggest that sustainable aviation fuels result in reduced ice particle numbers, extinction coefficients, optical depth and climate impact from contrails.

In the trend of transforming existing systems and services into non-face-to-face models, the concert industry is also showing movements toward transitioning to virtual formats. Physical concerts in the real world require venues that can accommodate hundreds to tens of thousands of spectators, but non-face-to-face methods that can accommodate large audiences face various limitations. Moreover, to elevate the satisfaction level of virtual concert attendees to that of real-world concerts, it is important to implement interaction between performers and audiences. Modern metaverse platforms apply cutting-edge network technologies to accommodate numerous users within a single channel. Many researchers are adopting network technologies such as SDN (software-defined networking) and CDN (content delivery network) to set up a virtual concert that can accommodate large audiences. In this paper, we propose a network framework to be designed for the composition of virtual concerts. In particular, we separate a channel dedicated to interaction in order to provide an immersive experience of exchanging interactions between performers and audiences. As massive audiences transmitting interaction data to the performer in a 1:N format can lead to problems with acceptance and latency, this study introduces a concept of a channel form called ‘Zone’ and proposes an interaction data channel network framework that does not compromise immersion. The proposed framework supports tasks for effectively transmitting interaction data using network technologies for metaverse platforms such as XDN and clustering algorithms such as fuzzy c-means. We also suggest a CDN-based architecture that can ensure low latency for performers to transmit interaction data to the audience.

Reversible electrochemical magnesium plating/stripping processes are important for the development of high-energy-density Mg batteries based on Mg anodes. Ether glyme solutions such as monoglyme (G1), diglyme (G2), and triglyme (G3) with the MgTFSI2 salt are one of the conventional and commonly used electrolytes that can obtain the reversible behavior of Mg electrodes. However, the electrolyte cathodic efficiency is argued to be limited due to the enormous parasitic reductive decomposition and passivation, which is governed by impurities. In this work, a systematic identification of the impurities in these systems and their effect on the Mg deposition–dissolution processes is reported. The mitigation methods generally used for eliminating impurities are evaluated, and their beneficial effects on the improved reactivity are also discussed. By comparing the performances, we proposed a necessary conditioning protocol that can be easy to handle and much safer toward the practical application of MgTFSI2/glyme electrolytes containing impurities.

Ionizing radiation damage to DNA plays a fundamental role in cancer therapy, whereby water radiolysis effects are important to take into account. Here, near-ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron-spectroscopy is used to directly measure DNA damage during irradiation in water and compared to that in a dry atmosphere.

Background: Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of gentamicin sulfate (GEN) is usually recommended, particularly in critical patients. Only a few reports had described the determination of GEN in plasma or plasma using LC-MS/MS. Objective: This study aimed to develop and validate a sensitive ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) assay for the quantification of GEN in small volumes of human plasma. Results: The use of a very low concentration of the ion-pairing agent HFBA allowed significant retention of the very polar GEN forms in a reversed phase UHPLC column. The solid-phase extraction (SPE) procedure allowed clean extracts, with no interferences detected in blank samples, and high sensitivity. The assay was linear on the range of 0.2–40 mg L−1 of GEN complex. The combined GEN complex had inter-assay CV of 8.8–10.0%, intra-assay CV of 10.2–11.0%, and accuracy of 96.8–104.0%. The assay was applied to 17 clinical samples obtained from neonate patients. Measured concentrations were in the range of 0.15–3.57 mg L−1 for GEN C1, 0.12–3.55 mg L−1 for GEN C1a, 0.20–5.77 mg L−1 for GEN C2, and 0.47–12.88 mg L−1 for the GEN complex, all within the linear range of the assay. Conclusion: A sensitive assay for the quantification of gentamicin in plasma using anion-exchange SPE and UHPLC-MS/MS was validated. The assay can be used for TDM of gentamicin, particularly in centers with access to proper instrumentation and with a low demand for gentamicin measurements, where immunoassays are not cost-effective.

Strontium ferromolybdate, Sr2FeMoO6, is an important member of the family of double perovskites with the possible technological applications in the field of spintronics and solid oxide fuel cells. Its preparation via a multi-step ceramic route or various wet chemistry-based routes is notoriously difficult. The present work demonstrates that Sr2FeMoO6 can be mechanosynthesized at ambient temperature in air directly from its precursors (SrO, α-Fe, MoO3) in the form of nanostructured powders, without the need for solvents and/or calcination under controlled oxygen fugacity. The mechanically induced evolution of the Sr2FeMoO6 phase and the far-from-equilibrium structural state of the reaction product are systematically monitored with XRD and a variety of spectroscopic techniques including Raman spectroscopy, 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The unique extensive oxidation of iron species (Fe0 → Fe3+) with simultaneous reduction of Mo cations (Mo6+ → Mo5+), occuring during the mechanosynthesis of Sr2FeMoO6, is attributed to the mechanically triggered formation of tiny metallic iron nanoparticles in superparamagnetic state with a large reaction surface and a high oxidation affinity, whose steady presence in the reaction mixture of the milled educts initiates/promotes the swift redox reaction. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy observations reveal that the mechanosynthesized Sr2FeMoO6, even after its moderate thermal treatment at 923 K for 30 min in air, exhibits the nanostructured nature with the average particle size of 21(4) nm. At the short-range scale, the nanostructure of the as-prepared Sr2FeMoO6 is characterized by both, the strongly distorted geometry of the constituent FeO6 octahedra and the extraordinarily high degree of anti-site disorder. The degree of anti-site disorder ASD = 0.5, derived independently from the present experimental XRD, Mössbauer, and SQUID magnetization data, corresponds to the completely random distribution of Fe3+ and Mo5+ cations over the sites of octahedral coordination provided by the double perovskite structure. Moreover, the fully anti-site disordered Sr2FeMoO6 nanoparticles exhibit superparamagnetism with the blocking temperature TB = 240 K and the deteriorated effective magnetic moment μ = 0.055 μB per formula unit.

When additive manufacturing is used, the freedom of design plays a decisive role. It allows designers of mechanically stressed parts to generate special functional surfaces, integrate very efficient conformal cooling channels, or adapt the parts to the specific load in order to increase the stress ratio. In combination with the functional principle of particle dampers, the usage of metal additive manufacturing could be useful to implement damping directly in the transmission path of machine parts and elements. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to qualify the influence on the damping capability of the particles, outer geometry, frequency behaviour and the shape of the inner geometry. In this approach, different inner geometries are used to analyse the distinctions of damping behaviour caused by unmelted metal powder. The focus lies on the geometrical shape of the inner geometry. It is recognisable that the shape has a non-negligible impact on the dynamic behaviour of the structure. The results show that structures with a high number of sharp edges in the inner shape oriented orthogonally to the excitation or under a certain angle provide a better energy decay than structures without an inner shape or a force-parallel oriented shape.

In this paper, we propose a conceptual framework for a sensor fusion system that can detect objects in a dense smoke environment with a visibility of less than 1 m. Based on the review of several articles, we determined that by using a single thermal IR camera, a single Frequency-Modulated Continuous-Wave (FMCW) radar, and multiple ultrasonic sensors simultaneously, the system can overcome the challenges of detecting objects in dense smoke. The four detailed methods proposed are as follows: First, a 3D ultrasonic sensor system that detects the 3D position of an object at a short distance and is not affected by temperature change/gradient; Second, detecting and classifying objects such as walls, stairs, and other obstacles using a thermal IR camera; Third, a 2D radial distance measurement method for a distant object using an FMCW radar; Fourth, sensor fusion for 3D position visualization of multiple objects using a thermal IR camera, 3D ultrasonic sensor system, and FMCW radar. Finally, a conceptual design is presented based on the proposed methodologies, and their theoretical usefulness is discussed. The framework is intended to motivate future research on the development of a sensor fusion system for object detection in dense smoke environments.

The combination of organic and inorganic materials is attracting attention as a photocatalyst that promotes the decomposition of organic dyes. A facile thermal procedure has been proposed to produce spherical silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), carbon nanospheres (CNSs), and a bispherical AgNP–CNS nanocomposite. The AgNPs and CNSs were each synthesized from silver acetate and glucose via single- and two-step annealing processes under sealed conditions, respectively. The AgNP–CNS nanocomposite was synthesized by the thermolysis of a mixture of silver acetate and a mesophase, where the mesophase was formed by annealing glucose in a sealed vessel at 190 °C. The physicochemical features of the as-prepared nanoparticles and composite were evaluated using several analytical techniques, revealing (i) increased light absorption, (ii) a reduced bandgap, (iii) the presence of chemical interfacial heterojunctions, (iv) an increased specific surface area, and (v) favorable band-edge positions of the AgNP–CNS nanocomposite compared with those of the individual AgNP and CNS components. These characteristics led to the excellent photocatalytic efficacy of the AgNP–CNS nanocomposite for the decomposition of three pollutant dyes under ultraviolet (UV) radiation. In the AgNP–CNS nanocomposite, the light absorption and UV utilization capacity increased at more active sites. In addition, effective electron–hole separation at the heterojunction between the AgNPs and CNSs was possible under favorable band-edge conditions, resulting in the creation of reactive oxygen species. The decomposition rates of methylene blue were 95.2, 80.2, and 73.2% after 60 min in the presence of the AgNP–CNS nanocomposite, AgNPs, and CNSs, respectively. We also evaluated the photocatalytic degradation efficiency at various pH values and loadings (catalysts and dyes) with the AgNP–CNS nanocomposite. The AgNP–CNS nanocomposite was structurally rigid, resulting in 93.2% degradation of MB after five cycles of photocatalytic degradation.

Low-level clouds (LLCs) cover a wide area of southern West Africa (SWA) during the summer monsoon months and have an important cooling effect on the regional climate. Previous studies of these clouds have focused on modelling and remote sensing via satellite. We present the first comprehensive set of in situ measurements of cloud microphysics from the region, taken during June–July 2016, as part of the DACCIWA (Dynamics–aerosol–chemistry–cloud interactions in West Africa) campaign. This novel dataset allows us to assess spatial, diurnal, and day-to-day variation in the properties of these clouds over the region. LLCs developed overnight and mean cloud cover peaked a few hundred kilometres inland around 10:00 local solar time (LST), before clouds began to dissipate and convection intensified in the afternoon. Regional variation in LLC cover was largely orographic, and no lasting impacts in cloud cover related to pollution plumes were observed downwind of major population centres. The boundary layer cloud drop number concentration (CDNC) was locally variable inland, ranging from 200 to 840 cm−3 (10th and 90th percentiles at standard temperature and pressure), but showed no systematic regional variations. Enhancements were seen in pollution plumes from the coastal cities but were not statistically significant across the region. A significant fraction of accumulation mode aerosols, and therefore cloud condensation nuclei, were from ubiquitous biomass burning smoke transported from the Southern Hemisphere. To assess the relative importance of local and transported aerosol on the cloud field, we isolated the local contribution to the aerosol population by comparing inland and offshore size and composition measurements. A parcel model sensitivity analysis showed that doubling or halving local emissions only changed the calculated cloud drop number concentration by 13 %–22 %, as the high background meant local emissions were a small fraction of total aerosol. As the population of SWA grows, local emissions are expected to rise. Biomass burning smoke transported from the Southern Hemisphere is likely to dampen any effect of these increased local emissions on cloud–aerosol interactions. An integrative analysis between local pollution and Central African biomass burning emissions must be considered when predicting anthropogenic impacts on the regional cloud field during the West African summer monsoon.

Owing to their robust Li-ion storage properties induced by the entropy stabilization effect, transition-metal-based high entropy oxides are considered promising electrode materials for use in Li-ion batteries. In this work, full-cells comprising (Co0.2Cu0.2Mg0.2Ni0.2Zn0.2)O anode and LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 cathode were assembled to explore their potential for practical applications. The cycling performance was studied by different electrochemical experiments. The cells were found to deliver an initial specific discharge capacity of 446 mAh g−1, which was maintained at 300 and 256 mAh g−1 after 50 and 100 cycles, respectively, and they showed stable cyclability even at specific currents of 1.6 A g−1. More importantly, high specific energy and power densities of about 240 Wh kg−1 and 320 W kg−1 were achieved. Additionally, pouch cells of total capacity 2.5 mAh were built and successfully employed as a power source. We present a theoretical atomistic study of the optical properties of non-toxic InX (X = P, As, Sb) colloidal quantum dot arrays for application in photovoltaics. We focus on the electronic structure and optical absorption and on their dependence on array dimensionality and surface stoichiometry motivated by the rapid development of experimental techniques to achieve high periodicity and colloidal quantum dot characteristics. The homogeneous response of colloidal quantum dot arrays to different light polarizations is also investigated. Our results shed light on the optical behaviour of these novel multi-dimensional nanomaterials and identify some of them as ideal building blocks for intermediate band solar cells.

Illicit drug abuse is a worldwide social and health problem, and monitoring illicit drug use is of paramount importance in the context of public policies. It is already known that relevant epidemiologic information can be obtained from the analysis of urban residual waters. This approach, named wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE), is based on the measurement of specific markers, resulting from human biotransformation of the target drugs, as indicators of the consumption of the compounds by the population served by the wastewater treatment installation under investigation. Drug consumption estimation based on WBE requires sewage sampling strategies that express the concentrations along the whole time period of time. To this end, the most common approach is the use of automatic composite samplers. However, this active sampling procedure is costly, especially for long-term studies and in limited-resources settings. An alternative, cost-effective, sampling strategy is the use of passive samplers, like the polar organic chemical integrative sampler (POCIS). POCIS sampling has already been applied to the estimation of exposure to pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and some drugs of abuse, and some studies evaluated the comparative performances of POCIS and automatic composite samplers. In this context, this manuscript aims to review the most important biomarkers of drugs of abuse consumption in wastewater, the fundamentals of POCIS sampling in WBE, the previous application of POCIS for WBE of drugs of abuse, and to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of POCIS sampling, in comparison with other strategies used in WBE. POCIS sampling is an effective strategy to obtain a representative overview of biomarker concentrations in sewage over time, with a small number of analyzed samples, increased detection limits, with lower costs than active sampling. Just a few studies applied POCIS sampling for WBE of drugs of abuse, but the available data support the use of POCIS as a valuable tool for the long-term monitoring of the consumption of certain drugs within a defined population, particularly in limited-resources settings.

Since reservoirs can act as sinks for potential contaminants, such as metal(loid)s, sediment management is a challenge for reservoir operators. To exemplify the variability of concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), vanadium (V) and zinc (Zn), the sediments of two differently constituted reservoirs located in the Ore Mountains (Saxony, Germany) were comparatively investigated. In the sediments of the Einsiedel Reservoir, which has a catchment area dominated by forestry, the median values showed an enrichment of Cd (6.7 mg/kg), Co (31.4 mg/kg), Hg (0.57 mg/kg), Ni (39.0 mg/kg) and Zn (283 mg/kg), mainly due to an elevated geogenic background and a preferential input of these elements from the soils of the catchment area. Sediments of the Berthelsdorf Smelter Pond, which has a predominantly agricultural catchment, had relatively high median concentrations of As (62.9 mg/kg), Cd (10.3 mg/kg), Cr (43.1 mg/kg), Cu (50.2 mg/kg), Hg (0.51 mg/kg), Pb (204 mg/kg), V (57.0 mg/kg) and Zn (626 mg/kg), which was due to an elevated geogenic background and heavy anthropogenic metal(loid) inputs over the past. Statistical analyses indicated that site-specific differences (e.g., in the content of organic matter or in the physicochemical properties of sediments) may influence the sink and source functions of the reservoirs for metal(loid)s. In this context, a strong influence of the specific catchment characteristics on the sediment composition of the reservoirs was concluded. Based on the German Federal Soil Protection Ordinance, the status quo of the metal(loid) contamination of the two reservoirs was evaluated and recommendations for further management and investigations were derived.

Three-dimensional displays are receiving considerable attention owing to their ability to deliver realistic content. Particularly, a multiview display with temporal multiplexing offers advantages in terms of fewer restrictions for optical alignment and flexibility in forming view density. However, most of studies realize horizontal parallax-only multiview display. In a horizontal parallax-only multiview display the content is distorted in the vertical direction as the observer changes the viewing distance. It is helpful to understand this phenomenon using the Wigner distribution function (WDF). In this study, we divided the viewing zone (VZ) into the sub-viewing zone and integrated viewing zone according to the number of views of the observer. Specifically, the changes in the contents are experimentally evaluated at different viewing distances to validate our expectation. For the experiment, we implemented a full-parallax multiview display with spherical symmetry and designed a high-speed wide-angle dual-axis scanner. This scanner comprises two single-axis scanners connected by high numerical-aperture scanning optics. The proposed system and WDF analysis of VZ will be helpful to evaluate the characteristics of the multiview system.

In this study, a variation of the substrate temperature during plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition of hydrogenated amorphous silicon is reported, which revealed a local minimum of the optical bandgap. It is shown, that the silicon monohydride bond density is more appropriate to describe this dependency than the commonly discussed layer properties hydrogen concentration and structural disorder. Furthermore, a high silicon monohydride bond density regime is suggested, in which the optical bandgap is independent of the bond density. This hypohesis explains previously published constant optical bandgaps under variation of the hydrogen concentration and structural disorder. Beyond their applications in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials can also make good photonic markers. Time-gated measurement of their delayed emission enables “background-free” imaging in, for example, biological systems, because no naturally-occurring compounds exhibit such long-lived emission. Attaching a strongly-absorbing antenna, such as a phenylene ethynylene oligomer, to the TADF core would be of interest to increase their brightness as photonic markers. With this motivation, we study a sequence of TADF-oligomer conjugates with oligomers of varying length and show that, even when the absorption of the oligomer is almost resonant with the charge-transfer absorption of the TADF core, the antenna transfers energy to the TADF core. We study this series of compounds with time resolved emission and transient absorption spectroscopy and find that the delayed fluorescence is essentially turned-off for the longer antennae. Interestingly, we find that the turn-off of the delayed fluorescence is not caused by quenching of the TADF charge-transfer triplet state due to triplet energy transfer of the lower-lying triplet state to the antenna, but must be associated with a decrease in the reverse intersystem crossing rate. These results are of relevance for the further development of TADF “dyes” and also, in the broader context, for understanding the dynamics of TADF molecules in the vicinity of energy donors/acceptors (i.e., in fluorescent OLEDs wherein TADF molecules are used as an assistant dopant).

The coherence of a light source is a vital aspect regarding the image quality of holographic contents. Generally, the coherence of the light source is the reason for speckle noise in a holographic display, which degrades the image quality. To reduce the speckle noise, partially coherent light sources such as light-emitting diodes (LED) have been studied. However, if the coherence of the light source is too low, the reconstructed image will blur. Therefore, using a spatial filter to improve the spatial coherence of LEDs has been proposed. In this study, we analyze the effect of the spatial and temporal coherence of the LED light source in a digital holographic display, and the optimal spatial coherence is determined. For this purpose, we devised an optical structure to control the spatial coherence in a holographic display system using a digital micro-mirror device (DMD). Here, the DMD functions as a dynamic spatial filter. By evaluating the change in the holographic image quality according to the spatial filter size, we obtained an optimal spatial filter size of 270 µm in our system. The proposed method is expected to be useful for selecting the optimal coherence of the light source for holographic displays.

Sediment management is a fundamental part of reservoir operation, but it is often complicated by metal(loid) enrichment in sediments. Knowledge concerning the sources of potential contaminants is therefore of important significance. To address this issue, the concentrations and the mobile fractions of metal(loid)s were determined in the sediments and the respective catchment areas of six reservoirs. The results indicate that reservoirs generally have a high potential for contaminated sediment accumulation due to preferential deposition of fine particles. The median values of the element-specific enrichment factor (EF) demonstrates slight enrichments of arsenic (EF: 3.4), chromium (EF: 2.8), and vanadium (EF: 2.9) for reservoir sediments. The enrichments of cadmium (EF: 8.2), manganese (EF: 3.9), nickel (EF: 4.8), and zinc (EF: 5.0) are significantly higher. This is enabled by a diffuse element release from the soils into the impounded streams, which is particularly favored by soil acidity. Leaching from the catchment soils partially enriches elements in stream sediments before their fine-grained portions in particular are deposited as reservoir sediment. We assume that this effect is of high relevance especially for reservoirs impounding small streams with forested catchments and weakly acid buffering parent material of soil formation.

Soils contain an increasing number of different pollutants, which are often released into the environment by human activity. Among the “new” potential pollutants are plastics and microplastics. “Recognized” pollutants such as heavy metals, of geogenic and anthropogenic origin, now meet purely anthropogenic contaminants such as plastic particles. Those can meet especially in floodplain landscapes and floodplain soils, because of their function as a temporary sink for sediments, nutrients, and pollutants. Based on a geospatial sampling approach, we analyzed the soil properties and heavy metal contents (ICP-MS) in soil material and macroplastic particles, and calculated total plastic concentrations (Ptot) from preliminary studies. Those data were used to investigate spatial connections between both groups of pollutants. Our results from the example of the Lahn river catchment show a low-to-moderate contamination of the floodplain soils with heavy metals and a wide distribution of plastic contents up to a depth of two meters. Furthermore, we were able to document heavy metal contents in macroplastic particles. Spatial and statistical correlations between both pollutants were found. Those correlations are mainly expressed by a comparable variability in concentrations across the catchment and in a common accumulation in topsoil and upper soil or sediment layers (0–50 cm). The results indicate comparable deposition conditions of both pollutants in the floodplain system.

The origin and classification of energy states, as well as the electronic transitions and energy transfers associated with them, have been recognized as critical factors for understanding the optical properties of carbon nanodots (CNDs). Herein, we report the synthesis of CNDs in an optimized process that allows low-temperature carbonization using ethanolamine as the major precursor and citric acid as an additive. The results obtained herein suggest that the energy states in our CNDs can be classified into four different types based on their chemical origin: carbogenic core states, surface defective states, molecular emissive states, and non-radiative trap states. Each energy state is associated with the occurrence of different types of emissions in the visible to near-infrared (NIR) range and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The potential pathways of radiative/non-radiative transitions in CNDs have been systematically studied using visible-to-NIR emission spectroscopy and fluorescence decay measurements. Furthermore, the bright photoluminescence and ROS generation of these CNDs render them suitable for in vitro imaging and photodynamic therapy applications. We believe that these new insights into the energy states of CNDs will result in significant improvements in other applications, such as photocatalysis and optoelectronics.
