Abstract

We visualized the density distributions of C2 (plume), NO (ambient gas), and CN (reaction product) when a graphite target was ablated by irradiating YAG laser pulses at wavelengths of 1064 and 355 nm in ambient gas mixture of NO and He. It has been shown by the density distributions of C2 and NO that the expansion of the plume removes the ambient gas and the plume and the ambient gas locate exclusively in both the cases at 1064 and 355 nm. A high CN density was observed at the interface between the plume and the ambient gas at 1064 nm, which is reasonable since chemical reactions between the plume and the ambient gas may occur only at their interface. On the other hand, in the case at 355 nm, we observed considerable CN inside the plume, indicating that the chemical reaction processes in the laser ablation at 355 nm is different from that expected from the density distributions of the plume and the ambient gas.

Abstract

Structured Abstract Authors – Warita H, Watarai H, Soma K Objectives – The goal of this study was to investigate the role of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in occlusal force-induced signal transduction in rat periodontal ligament (PDL). Design – Rats were fitted with a bite plate and a metal cap to the maxillary and mandibular incisors, respectively, to eliminate the occlusal forces on rat molars. One group was sacrificed at 7 days (exclusion group), while the remaining rats had their appliances removed to reestablish molar occlusal contact (reload group) and were sacrificed 7 days thereafter. Another group of rats (normal group) were left completely untreated. Frozen cross sections of the upper first molars were stained with NADPH-diaphorase to quantify NOS activity. The distal sides of the disto-palatal roots of the upper first molars were examined, and the number and the area of stained cells in the PDL were measured. Results – In the normal group, NOS expression was detected in blood vessels, monocyte-macrophages, fibroblastic cells and osteoclastic cells. Abstract

The relationship between occlusal stimuli and a hypofunctional periodontal ligament (PDL) structure has been reported, though changes in occlusal recovery conditions were still unclear. Nitric oxide (NO) produced by NO synthase (NOS) is considered a factor for vascular and immune system control, and it increases according to mechanical stimuli. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between NOS and occlusal stimuli in PDL by comparing hypofunction with occlusal recovery. The study focused on the expression of endothelial NOS (eNOS) and inducible NOS (iNOS). Their expression significantly decreased in occlusal hypofunction compared with the control group and increased close to normal in an occlusal recovery group. The change in the immunopositive area was more dramatic than the immunopositive cell number. Moreover, the rate of iNOS increase was higher than that of eNOS. This study suggests that NO plays an important role in the recovery of the hypofunctional PDL.

7. [Ne II] 12.8 Micron Images of Four Galactic Ultracompact H II Regions: Ionized Neon Abundance as a Tracer of the Ionizing Stars

Abstract

We present the results of ground-based imaging spectroscopy of the [Ne II] 12.8 micron line emitted from the ultracompact (UC) H II regions; W51d, G45.12+0.13, G35.20-1.74 and Monoceros R2, with 2arcsec spatial resolution. We found that the overall distribution of the [Ne II] emission is generally in good agreement with the radio (5 or 15 GHz) VLA distribution for each source. The Ne+ abundance ([Ne+/H+]) distributions are also derived from the [Ne II] and the radio maps. As for G45.12+0.13 and W51d, the Ne+ abundance decreases steeply from the outer part of the map toward the radio peak. On the other hand, the Ne+ abundance distributions of G35.20-1.74 and Mon R2 appear rather uniform. These results can be interpreted by the variation of ionizing structures of neon, which is primarily determined by the spectral type of the ionizing stars. We have evaluated the effective temperature of the ionizing star by comparing the Ne+ abundance averaged over the whole observed region with that calculated by H II region models based on recent non-LTE stellar atmosphere models: 39,100 (+1100, -500) K (O7.5V-O8V) for W51d, 37,200 (+1000, -700) K (O8V-O8.5V) for G45.12+0.13, 35,000-37,600 (+1500, -600) K (O8V-O9V) for G35.20-1.74, and < 34,000 K (< B0V) for Mon R2.
