Discovery of drugs rapidly and effectively is an important aspect for Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, a novel high-throughput screening (HTS) method aims at screening the small-molecules with amyloid-β (Aβ) binding affinity from natural medicines, based on the combinational use of biolayer interferometry (BLI) and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode-array detector and quadrupole/time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC−DAD-Q/TOF-MS/MS) has been firstly developed. Briefly, the components in natural medicines disassociated from biotinylated Aβ were collected to analyze their potential Aβ binding affinity by UHPLC−DAD-Q/TOF-MS/MS. Here, baicalein was confirmed to exhibit the highest binding affinity with Aβ in Scutellaria baicalensis. Moreover, polyporenic acid C (PPAC), dehydrotumulosic acid (DTA), and tumulosic acid (TA) in Kai-Xin-San (KXS) were also identified as potent Aβ inhibitors. Further bioactivity validations indicated that these compounds could inhibit Aβ fibrillation, improve the viability in Aβ-induced PC-12 cells, and decrease the Aβ content and improve the behavioral ability in Caenorhabditis elegans. The molecular docking results confirmed that PPAC, DTA, and TA possessed good binding properties with Aβ. Collectively, the present study has provided a novel and effective HTS method for the identification of natural inhibitors on Aβ fibrillation, which may accelerate the process on anti-AD drugs discovery and development.

The purpose of this study is to maintain the proliferation capability of human parotid gland acinar cells (ACs) in vitro to extend passage number and to study the mechanism that regulates AC stemness. N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase V (GnT-V) is the Golgi enzyme, and it has been reported that the β1,6GlcNAc-branched N-linked glycans are associated with various cell behaviors. Therefore, we modify the gene expression of ACs by transfection of the GnT-V-overexpression plasmid, and we found that upregulation of GnT-V extensively increased ACs proliferation and stemness properties in ACs/GnT-V compared to ACs transfected with Mock plasmid. More importantly, we observed that high levels of GnT-V positively correlated with ALDH1A3 expression via increasing phosphorylation of cell surface receptors and activating the downstream signaling transduction. Hence, the current study suggested that GnT-V is a significant factor for cell immortalization in the ACs model by activating the EGFR/ERK/ALDH1A3 signaling pathway.

Policosanol exhibits a lipid accumulation alleviating effect, but the underlying mechanisms remains unclear. Bile acids are a significant factor in regulating cholesterol and lipid metabolism homeostasis in mammals. This study was aimed to elucidate the alleviating effect and underlying mechanisms of policosanol on hepatic lipid accumulation through bile acid (BA) metabolism. Policosanol supplementation significantly reduced hepatic triglycerides (19.29%), cholesterol (30.38%) in high fat diet (HFD) induced obese mice (P < 0.05). Furthermore, compared with the control group, HFD decreased the levels of total BAs (TBAs, 37.67%) and cholic acid (CA, 62.74%) in the serum of mice (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, compared to HFD group, policosanol also increased the level of secondary BAs (SBAs) and muricholic acids (MCAs, P < 0.05). qRT-PCR combined with protein level analysis revealed that policosanol significantly decreased sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP-1c) and CD36, and increased the expression level of cytochrome P450 family 7 subfamily A member 1 (CYP7A1) and cytochrome P450 Family 27 Subfamily A Member 1 (CYP27A1, P < 0.05). Additionally, in the liver, policosanol was found downregulated the expression of farnesoid X receptor (FXR)-small heterodimer partner (SHP), and activate the Takeda G-coupled protein receptor 5 (TGR5)-adenosine-monophosphate-activated protein kinase (APMK) signaling pathway (P < 0.05). Peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR)-α, hormone sensitive lipase (HSL), and carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT)-1α also significantly increased in HP group (P < 0.05). The aforementioned results reveal that the potential mechanism of policosanol in alleviating liver lipid accumulation is to promote BA synthesis and lipolysis through regulating the cross-talk of the AMPK-FXR-TGR5. New insight for the application of policosanol as an anti-fatty liver functional food ingredient or supplement is also provided. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Policosanol is an important active component of cereals and insect waxes (15-80%). However, almost no policosanol in refined foods such as clear corn germ oil and wheat flour. This study showed that oral administration of policosanol can significantly reduce triglyceride and cholesterol levels in the liver through affecting AMPK-TGR5-FXR cross-talk, whereas no significant toxicological effect is reported in human and mouse models. This study may provide theoretical support for the theory of dietary structure and the development of dietary supplements to improve lipid metabolism targeting the "bile acid-AMPK-TGR5" pathway.

Designed and synthesized two corrosion inhibitors that can resist corrosion of low-carbon steel in high-salinity corrosive media. When these compounds are used as corrosion inhibitors in high salinity corrosive media, the laboratory evaluation results clearly showed that the two corrosion inhibitors had an excellent corrosion resistance. The synthetic corrosion inhibitors have an symmetrical structure which not only has a symmetrical appearance but also has the practical significance of forming an entire surface covering layer, which avoids the general corrosion and pitting corrosion.

Emerging evidence indicates that blood–retinal barrier (BRB) damage is the main cause of diabetic retinopathy (DR), and the downregulation of tight proteins (TJs) located between endothelial cells and the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated inflammation in Müller cells result in BRB injury. In this study, we aimed to study the protective effect of lychee seed polyphenol (LSP) on BRB integrity and the mechanism of action. By establishing a cellular model of BRB injury by using high glucose (HG)-induced hRECs or co-culture system of hRECs with MIO-M1 cells, we found that LSP significantly maintained the integrity of monolayer of hRECs as revealed by the decreased PD40 permeability and increased TJs, including ZO-1, Occludin, and Claudin 5. In addition, LSP inhibited the NLRP3 inflammasome activation and the levels of inflammatory cytokines via the TLR4/MYD88/NF-κB pathway. Collectively, this study provides valuable insight into the utilization of LSP in the treatment of DR.

MoS2 as one graphene-like 2D layered transition metal sulfide has attracted great attention. However, its application for the HER is still restricted by the poor electrical conductivity and structural restacking. In this work, we developed a facile method to prepare MoO2@MoS2 heterostructures in situ by partial conversion of MoOx into MoS2 on carbon cloth. Based on the two-time hydrothermal process, the MoS2 nanosheets can be dispersed and grow on carbon cloth. Excellent electrochemical HER activity of MoO2@MoS2/CC-2 can be achieved with a low overpotential of 115 mV at 10 mA cm−2 (η10) in 0.5 M H2SO4. Furthermore, it still shows durable electrocatalytic stability for 13 h. The outstanding electrocatalytic activity may be ascribed to the synergistic effect between the MoO2 and MoS2 heterostructures.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are regarded as advanced materials for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) because of their large specific surface area, adjustable pore size and abundant intrinsic molecular/atomic metal active sites. However, their essential features, such as the organic-ligand-shielded metal centres and low conductivity, make their electrocatalytic potential far from being exploited. These undesired issues can be avoided by designing and constructing MOF nanoarrays (MOF NAs) on self-supporting and conductive substrates such as the carbon cloth. Transforming appropriate solid material nanoarrays into MOF NAs provides a possibility to unlock the bottleneck. Herein, we have successfully developed a general approach for the morphological and electronic modulation of Co/Ni-MOF-74 NAs with wall-like Co/Ni(OH)2 NAs as the self-sacrificing template. The wall- or spindle-like morphology of MOF-74 NAs was modulated by changing the dosage of ligand. As a result, Co/Ni-MOF-74 NAs displayed superior activity and stability to those of Co/Ni-MOF-74 prepared without the template. The Co0.5Ni0.5-MOF-74 NAs delivered a low overpotential of 244 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 due to the high proportion of active high-valence Co(III) and Ni(III). The proposed strategy can be extended to obtain brick-like Ni-BDC NAs and needle-like Ni BTC MOF NAs on carbon cloth.

Blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction has been implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and is closely linked to the release of proinflammatory cytokines in brain capillary endothelial cells. We have previously reported that lychee seed polyphenols (LSP) exerted anti-neuroinflammatory effect. In this study, we aimed to explore the protective effect of LSP on BBB integrity. The monolayer permeability of bEnd.3 cells, and the mRNA level and protein expression of tight junction proteins (TJs), including Claudin 5, Occludin, and ZO-1, were examined. In addition, the inhibition of Aβ(25-35)-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation, and the autophagy induced by LSP were investigated by detecting the expression of NLRP3, caspase-1, ASC, LC3, AMPK, mTOR, and ULK1. Furthermore, the cognitive function and the expression of TJs, NLRP3, caspase-1, IL-1β, and p62 were determined in APP/PS1 mice. The results showed that LSP significantly decreased the monolayer permeability and inhibited the NLRP3 inflammasome in Aβ(25-35)-induced bEnd3 cells. In addition, LSP induced autophagy via the AMPK/mTOR/ULK1 pathway in bEnd.3 cells, and improved the spatial learning and memory function, increased the TJs expression, and inhibited the expression of NLRP3, caspase-1, IL-1β, and p62 in APP/PS1 mice. Therefore, LSP protects BBB integrity in AD through inhibiting Aβ(25-35)-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation via the AMPK/mTOR/ULK1-mediated autophagy.

The aim of the study was to investigate the regulatory effects of policosanol on hyperlipidemia, gut microbiota and metabolic status in a C57BL/6 mouse model. A total of 35 C57BL/6 mice were assigned to 3 groups, chow (n=12), high fat diet (HFD, n=12) and HFD+policosanol (n=11), then treated for 18 weeks. Policosanol supplementation significantly reduced serum triglycerides and total cholesterol, as well as the weight of brown adipose tissue (BAT) (p0.05). Combined 16S rRNA gene sequencing and untargeted metabolomic analysis demonstrated that policosanol had regulatory effects on gut microbiota and serum metabolism in mice. In obese mice, policosanol increased the proportion of Bacteroides, decreased the proportion of Firmicutes, and increased the ratio of Bacteroides to Firmicutes (pBacteroides, Parasutterella, and decreasing level of Lactobacillus and Candidatus_Saccharimonas. Moreover, policosanol decreased fatty acid synthase (FAS) in the iWAT of obese mice. Au nanorods were prepared through seed growth method. Their lengths and diameters were controlled by adjusting Ag+ content in the growth solution. Ethyl orthosilicate were hydrolyzed in alkali solutions to obtain SiO2-coated Au nanostructures. Au nanorods with ideal morphologies and sizes could only be obtained under the presence of a certain Ag+ concentration in the growth solution. Without Ag+, only some irregular nanoparticles were generated without nanorods. Longitudinal plasma absorption of Au nanorods shifts first to red shift and then to blue with the increase of Ag+ in the growth solution, while transverse plasma absorption hardly changes. However, longitudinal plasma absorption of silica-coated Au nanorods has a blue shift with the increase of the thickness of silica, while the transverse plasma has a slight red shift. Therefore, by coating Au nanorods with silica and by adjusting their aspect ratio by using different Ag+ concentration in the growth solution, Au nanoparticles can be synthesized for applications requiring absorption in specific UV regions.

In this study, a gemini zwitterionic viscoelastic surfactant with a sulfonic group, named VES-S, was synthesized. The surface activity properties of VES-S were found to show an ultra-low sensitivity to the salt concentration compared to those of cationic gemini surfactants, meaning that the packing parameter of VES-S varies little with increasing salinity. Through laboratory measurements, it was found that the addition of salt can enhance the viscoelasticity of the VES-S solution by tightening the net-work structure even at a high NaCl concentration (8 wt%), which indicated that VES-S was a viscoelastic surfactant with high salt tolerance. A series of laboratory evaluations showed that the clean fracturing fluids prepared by VES-S and simulated seawaters fulfilled the requirements for hydraulic fracturing operations, which proved that VES-S was an excellent and reliable viscoelastic surfactant with a high salt tolerance that can be used to prepare seawater-based clean fracturing fluids.

Fiber batteries are easily integrated with textiles to power wearable electronics because of their one-dimensional shape. Fiber batteries should meet the requirements of excellent mechanical strength, flexibility, durability, and superior electrochemical performance. Herein, high-strength cellulose yarns, lightweight, low-cost, and sustainable, are adopted as robust and flexible substrates of both cathode (polyaniline) and anode (metal Zn) of an aqueous Zn-ion fiber battery. The fiber battery delivers an energy density of 153.2 and 61.1 Wh/kg at a power density of 0.16 and 6.5 kW/kg, respectively (based on the total active mass of the cathode and anode). Meanwhile, superior cyclic stability and high flexibility are exhibited by the fiber battery. The capacity retention is 91.9% and 97.5% after 1000 charge/discharge and bending cycles, respectively. Impressively, the fiber battery works well under a mechanical load of 100 g to power an LED indicator.

Various types of dissolved organic matter (DOM) exist in the effluent of coking wastewater treatment plants. These can become precursors for disinfection by-products (DBPs) during chlorination in downstream drinking water treatment plants, representing a significant threat to the water supply. In this study, an O3 fluidized bed reactor (FBR) process is proposed to stabilize and reduce the number of precursors of haloacetonitriles (HANs) and trihalomethanes (THMs) in coking wastewater effluent. It was found that higher O3 concentrations resulted in lower amounts of precursors. Analysis of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total organic carbon (TOC), as well as three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy, showed that O3 preferentially decomposed DOM containing unsaturated and aromatic components. Ozonation also changed the species of organic compounds in the effluent. Furthermore, nitrogenous organic compounds such as nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds and nitrile were quickly oxidized. Amines were first increased then decreased, while the olefin and phenol, which contain unsaturated functional groups, were also selectively oxidized by ozonation. Organic acids and alkanes were formed during ozonation; however, these intermediate compounds showed relatively low formation potential for HANs and THMs. Therefore, the precursors can be mineralized or converted to organic compounds, which are less likely to form disinfection by-products. These results indicate that the ozonation treatment of coking wastewater effluent can effectively minimize disinfection by-product formation potential (DBPFP), reducing risks to the downstream water supply.

The interactions between shales and supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO2) as well as the influence of these interactions on the pore structure and the surface functional groups play a key role in long-term CO2 geological sequestration. To investigate the effect of ScCO2 treatment on the performance of high-pressure CO2 adsorption, three shale samples selected from different formations were treated with ScCO2 in a geochemical reactor to simulate the in situ geological sequestration process. The high-pressure adsorption behaviors of CO2 on untreated and ScCO2-exposed shale samples were measured by gravimetric method at 45 °C and pressures up to 18 MPa. Characterization methods included scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), low-pressure gases adsorption (LP-GA), element analysis (EA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The experimental results indicated that ScCO2 fluid could significantly alter the structural and physicochemical properties of shales, leading to the variations in high-pressure CO2 adsorption capacity of shales. The moisture and oxygen contents in the ScCO2-exposed samples were lower than those in the untreated samples. XPS analysis showed that the relative content of the organic oxygen-containing functional groups (C O, C O, O C O and COO−) in the raw shale samples decreased after the ScCO2 treatment. After long-term ScCO2 immersion, the maximum CO2 adsorption capacity of the shale samples exhibited a decreasing trend when compared to the raw samples, which was linked to the changes in the specific surface area of the micro- and mesopores as well as the oxygen-containing functional groups. The results obtained in this paper provide a basis for further evaluation of CO2 storage mechanisms.

In this work, the lignin by-products are converted into the three-dimensional interconnected nitrogen and sulfur codoped porous carbon materials by the carbonization and KOH activation process. The as-obtained N, S-HPC-1 shows the multilevel pore structure (macro-, meso-, and micropores) with a high specific surface area of 1454.7 m2 g−1, high nitrogen and sulfur content up to 2.1 and 4.3 wt%. As a result, the N, S-HPC-1-based supercapacitor shows a high specific capacitance of 269 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1, excellent rate performance of 62% capacitance retention at 50 A g−1, and favorable capacitance retention of 98.4% after 10 000 cycles at 5 A g−1. Furthermore, it can yield a remarkable energy density of 37.4 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 62 W kg−1. These results exhibit a low-cost and environmental strategy of the lignin utilization for electrodes of supercapacitors.

Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) have been widely used in China to treat stroke. Accumulating evidence has found that microRNA (miR)-155 plays critical roles in the pathology of ischemic stroke. Here we investigated whether PNS plays a protective effect against oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R)-induced focal inflammation and injury in SH-SY5Y cells by regulating miR-155 expression. Treatment with PNS at a concentration less than 160 µg/mL had no effect on the proliferation of SH-SY5Y cell. In OGD/R-induced SH-SY5Y cells, 160 µg/mL PNS treatment promoted cell proliferation and cell cycle progression, as well as decreased inhibited apoptosis and miR-155 expression. However, overexpression of miR-155 attenuated the promotion effects of PNS on cell proliferation and cell cycle, apoptosis inhibition in OGD/R-induced SH-SY5Y cells. Moreover, 160 µg/mL PNS treatment decreased the levels of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in OGD/R-induced SH-SY5Y cells, whereas overexpression of miR-155 reversed PNS-induced decreases in the levels of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α in OGD/R-treated SH-SY5Y cells. In conclusion, PNS attenuated OGD/R-induced injury in human undifferentiated SH-SY5Y cells by regulating the expression of inflammatory factors through miR-155.

Eucommia ulmoides leaves (EL) are rich in phenolic acids and flavonoids, showing enhancing intestinal health effects. The intestinal microbiota-bile acid axis plays important roles in the occurrence and recovery of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, whether EL extract (ELE) has regulatory effects on the intestinal microbiota, bile acid metabolism, and IBD is still unclear. To fill this gap, 2% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced mild IBD in a C57BL/6J mouse model that was treated with 200 or 400 mg/kg (intake dose/body weight) ELE was used. Oral ELE supplementation alleviated DSS-induced shortening of colon and colonic epithelial injury. Compared with the DSS group, ELE supplementation significantly decreased Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and interlukin-6 (IL-6) and increased occludin and claudin-1 mRNA expression level in the colon (p < 0.05). Combined 16S rRNA gene sequencing and targeted metabolomic analyses demonstrated that ELE significantly improved the diversity and richness of the intestinal microbiota, decreased the abundance of Bacteroidaceae, and increased Akkermansiaceae and Ruminococcaceae abundance (p < 0.05) compared with DSS-induced IBD mice. Moreover, ELE significantly increased the serum contents of deoxycholic acid (DCA) and tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA), which were highly positively correlated with Akkermansia and unidentified_Ruminococccaceae relative to the DSS group. We then found that ELE increased Takeda G-protein coupled receptor 5 (TGR5), claudin-1, and occludin mRNA expression levels in the colon. In the Caco-2 cell model, we confirmed that activation of TGR5 improved the reduction in transepithelial electoral resistance (TEER) and decreased the permeability of FITC-dextran on monolayer cells induced by LPS (p < 0.05). siRNA interference assays showed that the decrease in TGR5 expression led to the decrease in TEER, an increase in FITC-dextran permeability, and a decrease in claudin-1 protein expression in Caco-2 cells. In summary, ELE alleviated IBD by influencing the intestinal microbiota structure and composition of bile acids, which in turn activated the colonic TGR5 gene expression in the colon and promoted the expression of tight junction proteins. These findings provide new insight for using ELE as a functional food with adjuvant therapeutic effects in IBD.

The burgeoning interest in synthesis and biological applications of 1,6-naphthyridines reflects the importance of 1,6-naphthyridines in the synthetic as well as medicinal chemistry fields. Specially, 1,6-naphthyridines are pharmacologically active, with variety of applications such as anticancer, anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), anti-microbial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities. Although collective recent synthetic developments have paved a path to a wide range of functionalized 1,6-naphthyridines, a complete correlation of synthesis with biological activity remains elusive. The current review focuses on recent synthetic developments from the last decade and a thorough study of the anticancer activity of 1,6-naphthyridines on different cancer cell lines. Anticancer activity has been correlated to 1,6-naphthyridines using the literature on the structure-activity relationship (SAR) along with molecular modeling studies. Exceptionally, at the end of this review, the utility of 1,6-naphthyridines displaying activities other than anticancer has also been included as a glimmering extension.

Solid particle size distribution (PSD) of drilling fluids is one of the key factors for the formation damage and lost circulation control. However, particle size degradation occurs during the long-term process of drilling fluid circulation in the wellbore, consequently resulting in severe formation damage. In this study, size degradation experiments of calcium carbonate solids in the period of drilling fluid circulation are conducted to understand the effect of initial particle size, rotation speed, shear time, fluid viscosity, temperature, pH, salinity, and solid concentration on size degradation of bridging material (BM). The size degradation rate of D90 is taken as the characterization of particle size degradation. The results show that ① the degree of size degradation sharply increases with increasing solid initial size, rotation speed, and shear time. Under the experimental conditions, size degradation rate of sample with D90 = 44.153 μm is up to 30%~40% at a rotation speed of 1000 rpm over 30 min; ② there is a critical particle size in the range 15–20 μm for size degradation over 90 min. When the particle size drops to this critical size, no size degradation occurs obviously; ③ size degradation decreases with increasing fluid viscosity; ④ fluid temperature, pH, salinity, and solid concentration have little effect on size degradation. The evaluation criterion of size degradation is established, and an empirical model is developed to calculate the size degradation. Two mechanisms of the formation damage induced by size degradation are revealed. Based on the particle size degradation, the strategy for the optimization of PSD and solid supplement is presented. We believe that this strategy will be of great significance to designing the particle size distribution of BM for drilling fluids in the field.

The apparent viscosity and rheological behavior of nanoSiCP/Al-5Cu composites were studied by using a high temperature coaxial rotating cylinder viscometer. The results show that mass fraction of nanoSiCP is an important factor for apparent viscosity of the nanoSiCP/Al-5Cu composites, and there is a great enhancement of apparent viscosity of the slurry with the increase of nanoSiCp content. It can attribute to the viscous force between nanoSiCp and matrix alloy melt above the liquidus. The increased amplitude of apparent viscosity in semi-solid state is far less than those in liquid state with the increase of mass fraction of nanoSiCp. The apparent viscosities of the composites reinforced with 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% and 2% nanoSiCp at 700°C were 24.78%, 95.25%, 160.29% and 228.62% higher than that of Al-5Cu alloy, respectively. Besides, the rheological model of nanoSiCP/Al-5Cu composites was established based on the fitting curve, which can precisely describe the relationship between the apparent viscosity of nanocomposites slurry and nanoSiCp mass fraction.

Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) have numerous advantages such as good thermal stability (Tg > 300 °C) and mechanical stability (tensile strength at break > 60 MPa) as well as excellent electrical insulation performance and chemical/electrochemical stability. Herein, a macroporous membrane made up of a polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) was fabricated and used as a separator of a rechargeable Li-ion battery for the first time. The PIM-1-based separator showed good thermal resistance with Tg > 300 °C, high electrolyte uptake, and excellent Li-ion conductivity.

Three kinds of drag reducer were synthesized by inverse emulsion polymerization and named PHWAM-1, PHWAM-2, and PHWAM-3. Drag reduction (DR) tests showed that the three drag reducers have different DR characteristics in fresh water and various saline waters because of their different types of hydrophobic monomers. PHWAM-1, without hydrophobic monomers, performs better in fresh water, while PHWAM-2 and PHWAM-3, with hydrophobic monomers, perform better in brine. In addition, PHWAM-3, which has twin-tailed hydrophobic monomers, performs best in high-concentration brine. Measurements of micro-particle size and observations of spatial structure suggest that although the stronger hydrophobic polymer has no DR advantage over a linear polymer in fresh water, the molecular chains form a mutually associative supporting structure that improves the DR performance over that of a linear polymer in high-concentration brine.

Physical adsorption by mesoporous silica support has been widely used as a stabilization strategy of enzymes. The characteristics of support influence loading amount, activity and stability of enzymes. Considering size and charge on surface of DhaA, a suitable support based on molecular sieve SBA-15 was designed. The preparation process included hydrothermal synthesis, pore expansion and surface functionalization. An amino-modified support with disordered structure was finally achieved; whose pore size and window size were 5.6 nm and 3.8 nm respectively. The high loading and low leakage amount of DhaA were achieved by being adsorbed in this designed support. The catalytic activity and conformation of DhaA were still kept after adsorption. More importantly, the adsorbed DhaA had significant stability improvement in extreme denaturation conditions such as low pH, 3M of urea, 40% DMSO, and 30 days storage at room temperature. All the results suggested that it’s feasible to enhance the stability of enzymes by designing the appropriate adsorption support.

Coal seam fracturing can effectively reduce gas leakage and coal powder damage while ensuring a healthy, stable and sustainable development of the coal industry. In this study, a fracturing fluid thickener-quaternary polymer (ADP) was synthesized by the synergistic effect and characterized by 1H NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The viscosity and microstructure of the polymer at different concentrations were observed. A rheological measurement suggests that ADP has good viscoelasticity and shear resistance. Additionally, the filtration performance and gel breaking analysis showed that ADP meets the coal industry standards. Moreover it was found that ADP broken gel fluid impacted the surface of coal samples in Yinjiagou Coal Mine, Yangcheng City, Shanxi Province. For example, it reduced the methane affinity of coal (12.69%) and increased the hydrophilicity. It is significantly rare in the literature where polymer broken gel fluid bring beneficial effects on coal. The damage of gel breaking fluid to coal rock permeability in this area is only 14.9%. Thus the polymer fracturing fluid is expected to become a suitable fracturing fluid for coal seam fracturing.

The electrochemical urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is useful for the simultaneous elimination of urea-rich wastewater and generation of hydrogen. In theory, nickel-based catalysts, as non-precious metal catalysts, show great advantages in this regard. However, poor conductivity and insufficient active sites on common nickel-based nanomaterials hinder their catalytic performance. Herein, we report methanol-directed one-step growth of single-layered (SL) α-Ni(OH)2 nanosheets on a conductive carbon cloth (CC) (SL α-Ni(OH)2 NS/CC) for highly efficient electrocatalytic urea oxidation. Without the use of any other pretreatment and modification methodology, it is found that huge SL α-Ni(OH)2 NS with a thickness of ∼0.8 nm densely and fully covers every CC fiber in the form of nanowalls. Taking advantage of the good conductivity of CC and the sufficiently exposed active surface of SL α-Ni(OH)2 NS, the resulting SL α-Ni(OH)2 NS/CC-integrated electrode displays superior UOR performance. A current density as high as 436.4 mA cm−2 at 0.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl is achieved, which represents the best UOR performance among those of the reported nickel-based electrocatalysts. This convenient approach opens a new way to obtain ultrafine heterogeneous catalysts and their integrated electrodes with the assistance of methanol solvent instead of water.

A novel twin-tailed amphiphilic monomer named CGS-12 was synthesized. The copolymer GHPAM was prepared by copolymerization of CGS-12 with acrylamide (AM) and acrylic acid (AA) by photoinitiated free radical polymerization in aqueous solution. The critical micelle concentration of CGS-12 is 1.02 × 10-4 M. The rheological behaviour of the above copolymer was studied. It was found that GHPAM provides better performance at high temperature, exhibits unusual salinity sensitivity and tolerates greater higher shear forces. The viscoelasticity and micro morphologies have been investigated revealing that CGS-12 considerably enhances the crosslinking density and promotes to form a more compact network than the corresponding single-tailed hydrophobic monomer DM-12. Finally, we prove via molecular dynamics simulations that CGS-12 can enhance the hydrophobic association compared to DM-12 while maintaining the same hydrophobic chains content, resulting in improved rheological properties.

Fibers that incorporated active catalysts have attracted increasing attention in the context of efficient personal protection and the safe handling of contaminated materials. It has proven challenging to develop self-detoxifying fiber composites that can simultaneously solve the problems of agglomeration and easy shedding. Here, we report an approach to the synthesis of a tightly-bonded Zr(OH)4/fiber composite by using glycerol as a chelating and dispersing agent. Zr(OH)4 can be evenly distributed across the fiber surface, effectively increasing the Zr(OH)4content in fiber composite materials and enhancing decontamination performance. Thus, more than 2-fold increase in adsorption ability was found for the activity of the Zr(OH)4 powder. The decontamination results demonstrated that the Zr(OH)4/fiber composite was able to degrade the surface contamination of chemical agent simulators and 12 h degradation efficiency for 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide(2-CEES) and dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) could reach 99.9% and 97.5%. A quaternary polymer (HGP) was prepared by the free-radical polymerization of acrylamide, acrylic acid, maleic anhydride functionalized β-cyclodextrin (MAH-β-CD), and N-(3-methacrylamidopropyl)-N, N-dimethylnaphthalen-1-aminium chloride (NAP). It was found that host–guest behavior occurred most effectively at a molar rate of NAP and CD with 1:1, which exhibited better solubility than hydrophobically associative polymer. Moreover, the as-prepared polymer has superior salt tolerance, shear resistance, and viscoelasticity due to host–guest strategy. More importantly, the HGP solution simulates the distribution of formation water in the Bohai SZ1-1 oilfield has good rheological properties at 120 °C. All results show that the proposed polymer could be a competitive candidate in oilfield applications such as fracturing fluids, displacement fluids, and drilling fluids.

Au nanoparticle (Au NP)@SiO2@TDA-Eu nanocomposites were prepared by a two-step process: Au NP@SiO2 nanocomposites were prepared by a modified onepot process. Then the europium coordination polymer was deposited on the surface of the Au NP@SiO2 by mixing 2,2’-thiodiacetic acid [S(CH2COO)22-, TDA] and Eu(NO3)3·6H2O in ethanol via a hydrothermal method. The maximum fluorescent enhancement factor of the nanocomposites was 6.81 at 30 nm thickness of silica between the core of the Au NP and the shell of TDA-Eu. The prepared nanocomposites exhibit more sensitive monitoring of reactive oxygen species.

In this work, a copper(II) ion-selective electrode with an ionic liquid (IL), 1-(2-aminoethyl)-3-butylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([C4NH2C2im]NTf2), as active material has been developed. Parameters affecting the performance of the electrode, such as the dosage of the ILs, the amount of carbon nanotubes, and aqueous pH values, were investigated. The experimental results indicated that the optimal composition of the electrode filling material was 47.6% [C4NH2C2im]NTf2, 47.6% tetrabutylphosphonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TBPNTf2) and 4.8% carboxylic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH). Under the optimal conditions, the developed electrode exhibited a good linear response over the concentration range of 10−10–10−5 mol L−1 and had a low limit of detection, 7.9 × 10−11 mol L−1. No obvious interference from common metal ions was found. The proposed electrode was applied to determine copper (II) ion in food samples and the results were comparable to graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS).

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for approximately 85% of all lung cancers. Our previous studies have proven that Trillium tschonoskii Maxim. (TTM), a traditional Chinese medicine, possesses potent anti-tumor effect. However, the detailed components and molecular mechanism of TTM in anti-NSCLC are still unknown. In the present experiment, polyphyllin VI (PPVI) was successfully isolated from TTM with guidance of the anti-proliferative effect in A549 cells, and the cell death of PPVI treated A549 and H1299 cells was closely linked with the increased intracellular ROS levels. In addition, PPVI induced apoptosis by promoting the protein expression of Bax/Bcl2, caspase-3 and caspase-9, and activated autophagy by improving LC3 II conversion and GFP-LC3 puncta formation in A549 and H1299 cells. The mechanism study found that the activity of mTOR which regulates cell growth, proliferation and autophagy was significantly suppressed by PPVI. Accordingly, the PI3K/AKT and MEK/ERK pathways positively regulating mTOR were inhibited, and AMPK negatively regulating mTOR was activated. In addition, the downstream of mTOR, ULK1 at Ser 757 which downregulates autophagy was inhibited by PPVI. The apoptotic cell death induced by PPVI was confirmed, and it was significantly suppressed by the overexpression of AKT, ERK and mTOR, and the induced autophagic cell death which was depended on the Atg7 was decreased by the inhibitors, such as LY294002 (LY), Bafilomycin A1 (Baf), Compound C (CC) and SBI-0206965 (SBI). Furthermore, the mTOR signaling pathway was regulated by the increased ROS as the initial signal in A549 and H1299 cells. Finally, the anti-tumor growth activity of PPVI in vivo was validated in A549 bearing athymic nude mice. Taken together, our data have firstly demonstrated that PPVI is the main component in TTM that exerts the anti-proliferative effect by inducing apoptotic and autophagic cell death in NSCLC via the ROS-triggered mTOR signaling pathway, and PPVI may be a promising candidate for the treatment of NSCLC in future.

The effects of antibiotics on extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) using tetracycline as the model chemical were analyzed in terms of molecular property and structure. Results showed that three components, tryptophan, tryptophan type-proteins and polysaccharides in EPS of granular sludge from anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) reactor can interacted with tetracycline, detected by the static quenching via the endogenous fluorescence quenching and transient fluorescence spectroscopy. Thermodynamic experiment confirmed that their interaction was dominated by the hydrophobic force. Combined with the synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy, it was found that tetracycline facilitated the extension degree of peptide chains in tryptophan type-proteins, leading to the enhancement of hydrodynamic diameter of the macromolecules in EPS when binding with tetracycline. EPS in AnGS demonstrated the resistance ability to tetracycline by converting from gel to sol state in rheological term. With the increase of tetracycline concentration, the stability of elastic structures in EPS declined, influencing the AnGS stability.

Ethnopharmacological relevance Lychee seed, the seed of Litchi chinensis Sonn. is one of the commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It possesses many pharmacological effects such as blood glucose and lipid-lowering effects, liver protection, and antioxidation. Our preliminary studies have proven that an active fraction derived from lychee seed (LSF) can significantly decrease the blood glucose level, inhibit amyloid-β (Aβ) fibril formation and Tau hyperphosphorylation, and improve the cognitive function and behavior of Alzheimer's disease (AD) model rats. Aim of the study The aim of this study was to identify the main active components in LSF that can inhibit the hyperphosphorylation of Tau through improving insulin resistance (IR) in dexamethasone (DXM)-induced HepG2 and HT22 cells. Materials and methods The isolation was guided by the bioactivity evaluation of the improvement effect of IR in HepG2 and HT22 cells. The mRNA and protein expressions of IRS-1, PI3K, Akt, GSK-3β, and Tau were measured by RT-PCR, Western blotting, and immunofluorescence methods, respectively. Results After extraction, isolation, and elucidation using chromatography and spectrum technologies, three polyphenols including catechin, procyanidin A1 and procyanidin A2 were identified from fractions 3, 5, and 9 derived from LSF. These polyphenols inhibit hyperphosphorylated Tau via the up-regulation of IRS-1/PI3K/Akt and down-regulation of GSK-3β. Molecular docking result further demonstrate that these polyphenols exhibit good binding property with insulin receptor. Conclusions catechin, procyanidin A1, and procyanidin A2 are the main components in LSF that inhibit Tau hyperphosphorylation through improving IR via the IRS-1/PI3K/Akt/GSK-3β pathway. Therefore, the findings in the current study provide novel insight into the anti-AD mechanism of the components in LSF derived from lychee seed, which is valuable for the further development of a novel drug or nutrient supplement for the prevention and treatment of AD.

Polymer, SRP-2-1, was synthesized by micellar polymerization and characterized by 1H NMR. Salt tolerance and viscoelasticity tests verified that the salt resistance of SRP-2-1 was promoted by the synergistic effects of oxyethylene groups, sulfonate, and hydrophobic chains. It is suggested that the structure of SRP-2-1 became more compact with increasing salinity. Furthermore, a mechanism is proposed as to why SRP-2-1 solution has excellent salt-resistance properties. The experimental results indicate that, because of the good shear resistance properties, the polymer SRP-2-1 could be used as an alternative in many fields, for instance in fracturing fluids, enhanced oil recovery, and sewage treatment.

Carbon cloth is treated with a moderate electrochemical activation strategy to enrich its surface functional groups. In result, the hydrophilicity and intrinsic activity of carbon cloth (CC) can be enhanced. Furthermore, the activated carbon cloth (ACC) can adsorb massive transition-metal like nickel ions with a wet chemistry method. Combined with a low temperature thermal reduction under the atmosphere of Ar/H2, nickel-incorporated activated carbon cloth (Ni-ACC) can be obtained. In comparison with bare CC and nickel-incorporated carbon cloth (Ni-CC), the Ni-ACC displays more superior activity and durability of water oxidation in alkaline environment. The overpotential at the current density of 10 mA cm−2 (η10) is maintained at 245 mV after chronopotentiometry (CP) test for 24 h. The electrochemical activated method can serve as a simple approach for fabricating various metal-incorporated ACC.

A fluorescent BODIPY probe (SO-BOD) conjugated with a 2-salicylaldoxime group via an ethynyl spacer was designed and synthesized for highly sensitive and selective detection of DCNP (a simulant of Tabun). The probe exhibited significant fluorescent quenching in the presence of Et3N, and 30-fold fluorescence enhancement was achieved in the presence of DCNP. Integration of experimental and computational methods well illustrated that these fluorescence variations were attributed to the intramolecular photo-induced electron transfer (PET) process. Except for the low limit of detection (34 nM) to DCNP, SO-BOD also showed a rapid response (t1/2 = 175 s) and high selectivity. Furthermore, naked-eye detection of DCNP was carried out in both the liquid and vapor phases by test strips immobilized with the probe.

The development of a selective and efficient catalyst for CO2 electroreduction is a great challenge in CO2 storage and conversion research. Silver metal is an attractive alternative due to its enhanced catalytic performance of CO2 electroreduction to CO. Here, we prepared Ag nanowires anchored on carbon support as an excellent electrocatalyst with remarkably high selectivity for the CO2 reduction to CO. The CO Faradic efficiency was approximately 100%. The enhanced catalytic performances may be ascribed to dense active sites exposed on the Ag nanowires’ high specific surface area, by the uniform dispersion of Ag nanowires on the carbon support. Our research demonstrates that Ag nanowires supported on carbon have potential as promising catalysts in CO2 electroreduction.

Here, ultrathin cobalt carbide (Co2C) nanosheets are firstly illustrated as effective and robust catalysts toward photothermal degradation of sulfur mustard simulants (e.g., 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide, CEES) under solar light. Under the optimal conditions, the degradation rate of CEES by Co2C nanosheets is up to 98 %, which is much higher than the widely used P25 and anatase TiO2 nanoparticles. Moreover, the degradation performance is comparable or even better than those typical photothermal catalysts, including MnO2, MnOx-TiO2 and Co3O4, under identical conditions. Experimental evidences and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the superior activity is attributed to three main reasons: (i) the high photo-to-heat conversion efficiency of Co2C enables an elevated surface temperature for chemical bond breaking, (ii) the feasible binding of CEES on Co2C surface via Co S and Co Cl coordination promotes the process of degradation, and (iii) the surface hydroxyl groups ( OH) on Co2C nanosheets favor the degradation of CEES. Obviously, this work provides new insights into practical and large-scale application of transition metal carbides (TMCs) as novel photothermal catalysts in the decontamination of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) under ambient conditions (i.e., solar light and room temperature).

In recent years, cationic surfactants have received extensive attention in cleaning fracturing fluid thickeners due to various unique properties. At the same time, the development of temperature-resistant and salt-resistant clean fracturing fluid is the key to deep well oil and gas resource development. In this study, the rigid-soft combined strategy is adopted for molecular structure designs. N,N-dimethylcyclohexylamine and epichlorohydrin are used as the initial reactants; after the ring-opening reaction occurs, they are quaternized with erucamide propyl dimethyl ammonium to synthesize a novel double-cation viscoelastic surfactant, SY–JS. With double-cationic charges on the head group, water molecules are selectively adsorbed around the cation lattice to increase the hydration layer, and thus, salt tolerance is improved. Cyclohexane with a rigid structure improves temperature resistance. The ultra-long unsaturated hydrophobic tail imparts excellent heat tolerance and dissolubility to the designed viscoelastic surfactant. The clean fracturing fluid prepared by 3 wt% SY–JS with 130,000 ppm NaCl or KCl performs well under a shear rate of 170 s−1 at 140 °C, and the apparent viscosity remains above 30 mPa s−1 after 120 min.. Additionally, the results show that single-tail surfactants exhibit excellent performance at approximately 140 °C. Afterward, the brine produced from Rumaila and Jiyuan oil fields is used to prepare brine-based clean fracturing fluids, and evaluations, including proppant suspension, gel breaking, and permeability damage, were conducted. The results show that the brine-based clean fracturing fluid completely meets the requirements of hydraulic fracturing industrial application.

An effective and highly sustainable method has been developed for the Suzuki coupling reaction of aryl halides and phenylboronic acid using in situ generated nacocellulose (NC) supported palladium nanoparticles (Pd@NC NPs) as heterogeneous catalysts in water. The formation of PdNPs was observed in the absence of additional reagents, during the course of the Suzuki reaction from NC and Pd(OAc)2. In situ formed Pd@NC NPs have been systematically characterized using TEM, EDX, XRD and FT-IR techniques. The in situ generated catalyst was separated and studied for its successful reusability up to 11 cycles. The application of aqueous media, use of in situ formed catalyst, mild reaction conditions, absence of volatile organic solvents, broad substrate scope, high product isolated yields are the significant developments of this protocol. The nanocellulose used for this protocol has been generated form the waste cotton cloth and hence it is an example for the waste to wealth and sustainable approach.

Based on the empirical electronic theory of solids and molecules (EET), the actual model for unit cell of cementite (θ-Fe3C) was built and the valence electron structures (VES) of cementite with specified site and a number of Fe atoms substituted by alloying atoms of M ( M=Cr, V, W, Mo, Mn ) were computed by statistical method. By defining P as the stability factor, the stability of alloyed cementite with different numbers and sites of Fe atoms substituted by M was calculated. Calculation results show that the density of lattice electrons, the symmetry of distribution of covalent electron pairs and bond energy have huge influence on the stability of alloyed cementite. It is more stable as M substitutes for Fe2 than for Fe1. The alloyed cementite is the most stable when Cr, Mo, W and V substitute for 2 atoms of Fe2 at the sites of Nos. 2 and 3 (or No. 6 and No. 7). The stability of alloyed cementite decreases gradually as being substitutional doped by W, Cr, V, Mo and Mn.

We reported a facile and scalable salt-templated approach to produce monodisperse Rh nanoparticles (NPs) on ultrathin carbon nanosheets with the assistance of calcination under inert gas. More importantly, in spite of the essentially poor ORR activity of Rh/C, the acquired Rh/C hybrid nanosheets display a comparable ORR activity to the optimal commercial Pt/C catalyst, which may be due to the extra-small size of Rh NPs and the 2D defect-rich amorphous carbon nanosheets that can facilitate the charge transfer and reactive surface exposure. Moreover, Rh/C nanosheets present the optimal current density and best durability with the minimum decline during the entire test, so that ∼93% activity after 20 000 s is achieved, indicating a good lifetime for ORR. In contrast, commercial Pt/C and commercial Rh/C exhibited worse durability, so that ∼74% and ∼85% activities after 20 000 s are maintained. What's more, in the model system of reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), the kinetic constant k for Rh/C nanosheets is 3.1 × 10−3, which is 4.5 times than that of the commercial Rh/C catalyst, revealing that our Rh/C hybrid nanosheets can be potentially applied in industrial catalytic hydrogenation. This work opens a novel and facile way for the rest of the precious metal NPs to be supported on ultrathin carbon nanosheets for heterogeneous catalysis.

Water electrolysis represents a promising solution for storage of renewable but intermittent electrical energy in hydrogen molecules. This technology is however challenged by the lack of efficient electrocatalysts for the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. Here we report on the synthesis of platinum-nickel hydroxide nanocomposites and their electrocatalytic applications for water reduction. An in situ reduction strategy taking advantage of the Ni(II)/Ni(III) redox has been developed to enable and regulate the overgrowth of Pt nanocrystals on single-layer Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets. The obtained nanocomposites (denoted as Pt@2D-Ni(OH) 2 ) exhibit an improvement factor of 5 in catalytic activity and a reduction of up to 130 mV in overpotential compared to Pt for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). A combination of electron microscopy/spectroscopy characterizations, electrochemical studies and density function theory calculations was employed to uncover the structures of the metal-hydroxide interface and understand the mechanisms of catalytic enhancement.

In this study, the modification effects and mechanism of manganese (Mn) and ultrasonic vibration (USV) on the needle-like Fe-containing intermetallic compounds of Al-20Si-xFe-2.0Cu-0.4Mg-1.0Ni (x=1, 2 wt.%) alloy have been studied respectively. The effect of Fe-containing phases on volume fraction of hard phases is also investigated. The results show that the mechanism and effect of Fe-containing intermetallic compounds improved by Mn are in close relationship with Fe content. Mn can promote to form less harmful α-Al15(Fe,Mn)3Si2 phase, or replace some Fe atoms of β-Al5FeSi and δ-Al4FeSi2 according to different Fe content. When USV was applied to this alloy containing 2%Fe near liquidus temperature, most of the acicular β phases formed in traditional process are substituted by fine plate δ phases. With the combined effects of 0.5%Mn and USV, the acicular β phases are almost repressed and the Fe-containing phases exist in form of fine Al4(Fe,Mn)Si2 and Al5(Fe,Mn)Si particles about 20~30μm. Consequently, the total volume fraction of hard phases which are composed of primary silicon particles and Fe-containing phases increases significantly.

The aim of the study was to analyze the effects of the intravenous infusion of salbutamol aerosol combined with magnesium sulfate in the treatment of pediatric asthma and the subsequent effects on the levels of T-lymphocyte subgroups and Th1/Th2 cytokines. A total of 86 patients with pediatric asthma, first diagnosed and treated at the Xuzhou Children's Hospital, were continuously selected and randomly divided into an observation group of 44 cases and control group of 42 cases. The patients in the control group were treated with budesonide atomization inhalation, while the children in the observation group were treated with intravenous infusion of salbutamol aerosol combined with magnesium sulfate. The therapeutic effects in the groups were compared. After treatment, the levels of serum CD3+ and CD8+ decreased when compared to before treatment; the levels of CD4+ and CD4+/CD8+ also increased, but the observation group had more significant improvement. Developing environment-friendly green absorbents for disposal of wastewater remains to be studied. In this paper, the cross-linked chitosan aerogel (CsA) as an environment-friendly absorbent was obtained by a simple method involving cross-linked process and freeze drying technique. Compared with conventional absorbents, the porous chitosan aerogel was provided with unique properties such as low density (0.0283g/cm(3)), high porosity (97.98%) and outstanding adsorption performance. The chitosan aerogel also displayed good reusability and excellent elasticity with a maximal thickness recovery up to 96.8% of the original thickness. The as-prepared absorbent exhibited preferable adsorption capacities for crude oil, diesel and copper ion (41.07g/g, 31.07g/g and 21.38mg/g, respectively). The aerogel can collect a wide range of organic solvents and oils with absorption capacities up to 40 times their own weight, depending on the density and viscosity of the liquids. The adsorption capacity for heavy metal ion was also considerable and the maximum adsorption capacity (qm) of the aerogel for copper ion was 35.08mg/g according to Langmuir isotherm model. Consequently, the chitosan aerogel with versatile adsorption properties has a good potential for wastewater treatment in environmental application.
