Monoclinic Lu2WO6 undergoes diphase-to-perovskite BiLuWO6 transition via selective occupancy of Bi in three Lu sites. The transformation mechanism, process, and structure stabilities are revealed by variable cell nudged elastic band method, video, and phonon spectrum. Lattice transition brings about photogenerated charge separation in BiLuWO6. This is verified by indirect band gap transition, high electron migration rate, weak exciton binding energy, large photocurrent response, and small impedance. The electron–hole life time is elongated to produce abundant superoxide and hydroxyl radicals for the degradation of rhodamine B and phenol molecules. Bi–O antibonding states serve as immediate energy levels to change the recombination path, inducing 340 nm excitation band and 510 nm green light emission of Lu2WO6. Furthermore, multicolor emission of 1 at% Bi3+ + RE3+ (RE = Sm/Eu/Dy)-codoped Lu2WO6 is acquired via synergistic modification of the Bi–O antibonding state and RE3+ 4f states. Thus, the photogenerated charge motion in Lu2WO6 is tuned to expand application fields.

Thirteen BaTiO3/γ-Bi2O3 heterojunctions (labeled as HS1 to HS13) were synthesized via solid phase method under different raw material ratio, calcination temperatures, and times with XRD, SEM, EDS mapping, TEM, XPS, and Raman spectra characterizations. The degradation efficiency of all samples is above 93% after 90 min upon initial concentration 10 mg/L tetracycline with the optimal HS6 as 97.95%. The first order reaction rate is above 0.059 min-1, faster than 0.031 min-1 of BaTiO3 and 0.011 min-1 of γ-Bi2O3. The catalyst masses, different water bodies, and pH values have a little effect on the final removal efficiency of tetracycline. Under the same test environment, the removal efficiency of 10 mg/L rhodamine B is over 73.62%, higher than BaTiO3 45.35% and γ-Bi2O3 63.34% and the best HS3, HS4, and HS5 samples have 100% degradation efficiency. The heterojunction can be recycled with excellent structural stability. The superior catalytic activity is attributed to electrons transfer along Z-type from γ-Bi2O3 conductor band (CB) to BaTiO3 valence band (VB) via work function and charge density difference analysis. The superoxide radical and hole are active substance in the process of tetracycline degradation while the rhodamine B removal is ascribed to superoxide and hydroxyl radicals attacking. The decomposition paths of two pollutants are revealed using high performance liquid chromatography mass spectroscopy (HPLC-MS).

Through ground state and constrained density function calculations, Sm3+ ions luminescence in self-activated monoclinic Lu2WO6 was originated from intra 4f → 4f transitions, not inter 5d → 4f transitions. Theoretically the white luminescence was obtained by combining red and blue-green emissions of 4f energy levels and W–O charge transfer transitions. Experimentally, pure and Sm3+ doping Lu2WO6 powders were synthesized using solid phase reaction calcined in air atmosphere. By the analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Rietveld refinement, element Sm charge state was trivalent, and Sm3+ doping was concentration-dependent selectively doping in three Lu sites. Previous studies have shown that hydrogen treatment leads to the formation of blue to black TiO_2, which exhibits photocatalytic activity different from that of white pristine TiO_2. However, the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. Herein, density functional theory is combined with comprehensive analytical approaches such as X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy and transient absorption spectroscopy to gain fundamental understanding of the correlation among the oxygen vacancy, electronic band structure, charge separation, charge carrier lifetime, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and photocatalytic activity. The present work reveals that hydrogen treatment results in chemical reduction of TiO_2, inducing surface and subsurface oxygen vacancies, which create shallow and deep sub-band gap Ti(III) states below the conduction band. This leads to a blue color but limited enhancement of visible light photocatalytic activity up to 440 nm at the cost of reduced ultraviolet photocatalytic activity. The extended light absorption spectral range for reduced TiO_2 is ascribed to both the defect-to-conduction band transitions and the valence band-to-defect transitions. The photogenerated charge carriers from the defect states to the conduction band have lifetimes too short to drive photocatalysis. The Ti(III) deep and shallow trap states below the conduction band are also found to reduce the lifetime of photogenerated charge carriers under ultraviolet light irradiation. The ROS generated by the reduced TiO_2 are less than those generated by pristine TiO_2. Consequently, the reduced TiO_2 exhibits ultraviolet-responsive photocatalytic activity worse than that of pristine TiO_2. This report shows that increasing the light absorption spectral range of a semiconductor by doping or introduction of defects does not necessarily guarantee an increase in photocatalytic activity.

In this study, a simple TiN/SiO2/p-Si tunneling junction structure was fabricated via thermal oxidation growth on a Si substrate annealed at 600 °C. After electroforming, the number of cycle times for the SiO2-based tunneling junction device can reach an order of magnitude of greater than 105. The resistances at low and high resistance states and the threshold voltage of the device fluctuated in a very narrow range. More interestingly, excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic current phenomena (EPSC and IPSC) were observed during the pulse mode measurements, indicating that the device can be used in biological synapse applications. At different measurement temperatures and electric fields, direct, Fowler–Nordheim, and trap-assisted tunneling were responsible for the intrinsic conductance mechanism of the device before and after electroforming. This study provides a convenient approach to prepare simple tunneling junction structures for resistive random access memory applications with superior properties.

Heterojunction composite plays an important role in enhancing photocatalysis activity through inhibit electron-hole recombination. In this paper, biphasic heterojunction BiVO4 and HoVO4 is insitu-grown and characterized through XRD, TEM, Raman, SEM, EDS, and XPS. These two structures form n type staggered band configuration using Mott-Schottky and DRS. Rhodamine B (RhB) photodegradation efficiency of the optimal sample is 90.7% after 90 min, higher than single BiVO4 54% and HoVO4 34.5%. The main reason is ascribed to fast photogenerated charge separation via O O bond connection according to photoluminescence, photocurrent response, and theory calculation. The RhB degradation path is revealed from intermediate products identification. Therefore this study unveils photodegradation dyes application of BiVO4/HoVO4 samples.

Molecular orbital theory predicts that interactions between lone-pair electrons give rise to van der Waals forces between layers due to the nonequivalent hybridization in bulk black phosphorus. First-principles calculations show that phosphorene nanoribbons (PNRs) have a high activity and can be bonded easily with oxygen atoms and hydroxyl groups, indicating that the PNRs can be oxidized easily. The cliff PNR configuration can be maintained when it is passivated with hydroxyl groups, indicating that it could be stable in a strong alkaline environment. Upon oxidation of their zigzag, armchair, and cliff edges, phosphorene nanoribbons can be changed from semimetallic to semiconducting, and the band gap can be changed from direct to indirect. In this work, graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) are introduced as an electron-trapped layer in Pd/Zr[Formula: see text]Hf[Formula: see text]O2 (ZHO)/SiO2/Si memory device. This structure possessed longer than 104 s retention capability, a low operation voltage around [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]V and 2.61[Formula: see text]V storage windows. GOQDs contained carbon–carbon and carbon–oxygen single/double bonds based on the analysis of C-1[Formula: see text] and O-1[Formula: see text] X-ray photoelectron spectra. It is proposed that the GOQDs’ wide bandgap with many oxygen-containing functional groups favors charge capture to a greater extent. This new type of charge-trapping memory can be a promising candidate for wide application to storing information with non-volatility in the big data era.

The effect of isovalent lanthanum (La) doping on the monoclinic Y2WO6 photoluminescence was studied. Introducing the non-activated La3+ into Y2WO6 brings new excitation bands from violet to visible regions and strong near-infrared emission, while the bands position and intensity depend on the doping concentration. It is interesting to find that doping La3+ into Y2WO6 promotes the oxygen vacancy formation according to the first-principle calculation, Raman spectrum and synchrotron radiation analysis. Through the Rietveld refinement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results, La3+ is found to mainly occupy the Y2 (2f) site in low-concentration doped samples. With increasing doping concentration, the La3+ occupation number at the Y3 (4g) site increases faster than those at the Y1 (2e) and Y2 (2f) sites. When La3+ occupies different Y sites, the localized energy states caused by the oxygen vacancy pair change their position in the forbidden band, inducing the variation of the excitation and emission bands. This research proposes a feasible method to tune the oxygen vacancy emission, eliminating the challenge of precisely controlling the calcination atmosphere.
