Zeolites are essential materials to industry due to their adsorption and catalytic properties. The best current approach to prepare a targeted zeolite still relies on trial and error's synthetic procedures since a rational understanding of the impact of synthesis variables on the final structures is still missing. To discern the role of a variety of organic templates, we perform simulations of the early stages of condensation of silica oligomers by combining DFT, Brønsted-Evans-Polanyi relationships and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. We investigate an extended reaction path mechanism including 258 equilibrium reactions and 242 chemical species up to silica octamers, comparing the computed concentrations of Si oligomers with 29 SI NMR experimental data. The effect of the templating agent is linked to the modification of the intramolecular H-bond network in the growing oligomer, which produces higher concentration of 4-membered ring intermediates, precursors of the key double-four ring building blocks present on more than 39 known zeolite topologies.

Acceptorless dehydrogenation into carbonyls and molecular hydrogen is an attractive strategy to valorize (biobased) alcohols. Using 2-octanol dehydrogenation as benchmark reaction in a continuous reactor, a library of metal-supported catalysts is tested to validate the predictive level of catalytic activity for combined DFT and micro-kinetic modeling. Based on a series of transition metals, scaling relations are determined as a function of two descriptors, i.e. the surface binding energies of atomic carbon and oxygen. Then, a volcano-shape relation based on both descriptors is derived, paving the way to further optimization of active catalysts. Evaluation of 294 diluted alloys but also a series of carbides and nitrides with the volcano map identified 12 promising candidates with potentially improved activity for alcohol dehydrogenation, which provides useful guidance for experimental catalyst design. Further screening identifies β-Mo2N and γ-Mo2N exposing mostly (001) and (100) facets as potential candidates for alcohol dehydrogenation.

In this work, a theoretical analysis was carried out on the mechanism of methane combustion occurring on single site palladium oxide species [Pd]2+ supported on Al-MCM-41 silica. Single site Pd-oxo and PdO2-superoxo structures were used to represent the active centers. Activation energies for all the elementary steps involved in the oxidation of methane into formaldehyde are presented. The competition of methane/methanol substrates on active sites was examined. It was found that the formation of methanol via the reaction of methane with the superoxo species, formed via the adsorption of O2 on reduced Pd(ii) centers, facilitates the production of the very active Pd-oxo catalytic sites.

Among the best-performing homogeneous catalysts for the direct amination of activated secondary alcohols with electron-poor amine derivatives, metal triflates, such as aluminum triflate, Al(OTf)3 , stand out. Herein we report the extension of this reaction to electron-rich amines and activated primary alcohols. We provide detailed insight into the structure and reactivity of the catalyst under working conditions in both nitromethane and toluene solvent, through experiment (cyclic voltammetry, conductimetry, NMR spectroscopy), and density functional theory (DFT) simulations. Competition between aniline and benzyl alcohol for Al in the two solvents explains the different reactivities. The catalyst structures predicted from the DFT calculations were validated by the experiments. Whereas a SN 1-type mechanism was found to be active in nitromethane, we propose a SN 2 mechanism in toluene to rationalize the much higher selectivity observed when using this solvent. Also, unlike what is commonly assumed in homogeneous catalysis, we show that different active species may be active instead of only one.

In alkene metathesis, while group 6 (Mo or W) high-oxidation state alkylidenes are accepted to be key reaction intermediates for both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts, it has been proposed that low valent species in their +4 oxidation state can serve as precatalysts. However, the activation mechanism for these latter species-generating alkylidenes-is still an open question. Here, we report the syntheses of tungsten(IV)-oxo bisalkoxide molecular complexes stabilized by pyridine ligands, WO(OR)2py3 (R = CMe(CF3)2 (2a), R = Si(O tBu)3 (2b), and R = C(CF3)3 (2c); py = pyridine), and show that upon activation with B(C6F5)3 they display alkene metathesis activities comparable to W(VI)-oxo alkylidenes. The initiation mechanism is examined by kinetic, isotope labeling and computational studies. Experimental evidence reveals that the presence of an allylic CH group in the alkene reactant is crucial for initiating alkene metathesis. Deuterium labeling of the allylic C-H group shows a primary kinetic isotope effect on the rate of initiation. DFT calculations support the formation of an allyl hydride intermediate via activation of the allylic C-H bond and show that formation of the metallacyclobutane from the allyl "hydride" involves a proton transfer facilitated by the coordination of a Lewis acid (B(C6F5)3) and assisted by a Lewis base (pyridine). This proton transfer step is rate determining and yields the metathesis active species.

The surface Au–Ni nano-alloy was very efficiently used for the first time for the hydrogenation of levulinic acid with formic acid as an internal hydrogen source.

DFT calculations highlight the role of co-adsorbed ammonia in catalytic activity in the amination of alcohols by ammonia.

Despite progress in theoretical tools, the influence of solvation in heterogeneous catalysis remains poorly understood and predicted due to the large computational burden. In this work, we show that the inclusion of the solvation by water using a continuum model thermodynamically inhibits the O-H bond scissions involved in the ethanol aqueous phase reforming reaction over Pt(111), while it tends to favor the C-H, C-C, and C-O scissions. Then, we present a novel group additivity scheme for the free energy of adsorbates at the Pt/water interface that is able to capture this solvent effect. The mean absolute error (MeanAE) for the Gibbs free energy of formation is 3.3 kcal/mol over the investigated set of 200 species at the interface and the MeanAE for the 151 reaction free energies of ethanol aqueous phase reforming is 2.8 kcal/mol. Regarding the effect of solvation, our scheme is able to predict it with a MeanAE of about 1 kcal/mol. Together, the scheme promises to be accurate enough for narrowing down the most important reaction pathways in complex reaction networks as encountered in biomass conversion.

The evaluation of solvation energies is a great challenge. We focus here on an organic molecule chemisorbed at a metal-liquid interface, as a prototypical system, essential in tribology, electrochemistry and heterogeneous catalysis. We compare an established implicit solvation scheme with a strategy based on molecular mechanics (MM) free energy perturbation (FEP) seeded by QM computations. First, we benchmark the approaches against experimental hydration energies of standard (organic) molecules and find acceptable errors in the order of 0.06 eV (1.3 kcal mol-1). Then, the impact of various parameters on the solvation energy of an adsorbate have been assessed on a typical system of interest, levulinic acid adsorbed at a Ru(0001)/water interface. We identify the need for dipole corrections or symmetric slabs when including solvation effects on metallic surfaces. The MM-FEP scheme is revealed to be as reliable as the implicit solvent for water. In the case of levulinic acid, both PCM and MM-FEP agree that the bulk solvation effect is not sufficient to change the adsorption mode from bidentate to mono-dentate, despite the fact that the COOH group is desolvated in the bidentate case. MM-FEP has the great advantage of being more easily generalized to other solvents and to be further improved which will be particularly useful to study solvent and (counter-)ion effects on interfacial reactions.
