Experimental evidence on the efficiency of 2,2'4,4'-tetramethoxybenzil for UV-light energy dissipation is provided. This non-phenolic aromatic ketone has a low energy triplet which quickly decays to the ketone ground state, thus avoiding the generation of undesirable reactive species. The ease of production, the extreme toxicity of organophosphorus-containing nerve agents, and their facile use in terrorism attacks underscores the need to develop accurate systems to detect these chemicals. Among different technologies we review here recent advances in the design of chromo-fluorogenic methods for the specific detection of nerve agents. Optical sensing (especially colorimetric detection) requires usually low-cost and widely used instrumentation and offers the possibility of so-called “naked eye detection”. Recent reported examples suggest that the application of chromo-fluorogenic supramolecular concepts for the chromogenic or fluorogenic sensing of nerve agents might be an area of increasing interest that would allow developing systems able to overcome some of the limitations shown by classical analytical methods. Experimental evidence has been obtained for the involvement of encounter complexes between both enantiomers of a π,π* triplet excited ketone and a chiral phenol or indole. We have studied the dependence of the chemical reaction mechanism of L-lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) on the protonation state of titratable residues and on the level of the quantum mechanical (QM) description by means of hybrid quantum-mechanical/molecular-mechanical (QM/MM) methods; this methodology has allowed clarification of the timing of the hydride transfer and proton transfer components that hitherto had not been possible to state definitively. A new iron(III)–carbonato monomeric complex of orthophenylenebis( oxamato) (opba) 1 is synthesized, and spectroscopically and structurally characterized; it is a moderately efficient non-heme catalyst for the aerobic epoxidation of alkenes with co-oxidation of pivalaldehyde. The crystal structure of the complex [Cu4(H22L)2(H2O)2- (ClO4)2](ClO4)2·2H2O where L is a new pyrazole ligand containing 1,5-diaminopentane spacers represents a new form of obtaining metal ion-induced inorganic–organic cages. Mo–V–Te–Nb metal oxide catalysts prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and heat-treated in N2 at high temperatures (600–700 °C) show high activity and selectivity for the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane to ethene. Yields of ethene of 75% have been obtained at 400 °C on the best catalysts. Dejoz Garcia, Ana Maria, Ana.M.Dejoz@uv.es

The decrease of the magnetic response under irradiation at very low temperature was interpreted as a new evidence of synergy between magnetic interaction and spin transition in an iron(II) binuclear SC compound. Real Cabezos, Jose Antonio, Jose.A.Real@uv.es
