Hydrogels, typically favored for 3D printing due to their viscoelasticity, are now trending toward ecofriendly alternatives amid growing environmental concerns. In this study, we crafted cellulose-based hydrogels, specifically employing cellulose acetate sulfate (CAS). By keeping the acetyl group substitution degree (DS acetyl = 1.8) and CAS molecular weight constant, we varied rheological properties by adjusting sulfate group substitution (DS sulfate = 0.4, 0.7, and 1.0) and CAS concentration (2-5 wt %). Rheological characterizations, including shear-thinning, yield stress, and thixotropy, were performed to identify optimal conditions for formulating CAS hydrogel ink in direct ink writing for 3D printing under selected experimental conditions. Based on rheological findings, CAS hydrogels with DS sulfate 0.7 and concentration of 4 wt % was used for 3D printing, with subsequent evaluation of printing metrics. Additionally, the effect of ionic cross-linking using Ca 2+ ions on the structural integrity of 3D-printed structures was evaluated, demonstrating effective preservation through reinforced polymer networks. The shrinking and swelling behaviors of the 3D-printed structures were also significantly affected by this ionic cross-linking. Building on these findings, this work could broaden the range of cellulose derivatives available for the preparation of cellulose-based hydrogels for 3D printing.

Featured Application: Drying causes irreversible structural changes in cellulose and the changes are intimately associated with porosity, including pore volume and surface area. These changes must be considered for the application of cellulose in high value industry such as sustainable polymers that use cellulose nanofiber and sustainable sugar production. The effect of drying on the enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose was determined by analysis of porosity and crystallinity. Fiber hornification induced by drying produced an irreversible reduction in pore volume due to shrinkage and pore collapse, and the decrease in porosity inhibited enzymatic hydrolysis. The drying effect index (DEI) was defined as the difference in enzymatic digestibility between oven- and never-dried pulp, and it was determined that more enzymes caused a higher DEI at the initial stage of enzymatic hydrolysis and the highest DEI was also observed at the earlier stages with higher enzyme dosage. However, there was no significant difference in the DEI with less enzymes because cellulose conversion to sugars during hydrolysis did not enhance enzymatic hydrolysis due to the decrease in enzyme activity. The water retention value (WRV) and Simons' staining were used to measure pore volume and to investigate the cause of the decrease in enzymatic hydrolysis. A decrease in enzyme accessibility induced by the collapse of enzymes' accessible larger pores was determined and this decreased the enzymatic hydrolysis. However, drying once did not cause any irreversible change in the crystalline structure, thus it seems there is no correlation between enzymatic digestibility and crystalline structure. The growing concern for the environment has resulted in renewed interest in bio-based resources. This study aims to produce a hydrogel adsorbent from cellulose and examine its adsorption performance. In pursuit of this goal, we report a simple one-pot synthesis of cellulose acetate sulfate (CAS), followed by the formation of CAS hydrogels and their subsequent adsorption performances. The CAS includes both hydrophilic and hydrophobic functional groups, enable the formation of a single-component hydrogel through intermolecular interactions in deionized water. The thermal reversibility of CAS hydrogels makes them easily processable into various shapes. The durability of the CAS hydrogel adsorbents can be improved by introducing divalent cations (e.g., Ca2+), which create ionically crosslinked hydrogels. The ionically a crosslinked CAS hydrogel adsorbent exhibits a maximum adsorption capacity of 245 mg/g for methylene blue (MB) at 23 °C and a pH of 7. The adsorption behavior of MB on the CAS hydrogel follows both the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Furthermore, the CAS hydrogel adsorbent maintains a 70 % removal ratio after five cycles. The simplicity of synthesis and hydrogel formation opens up new possibilities for producing and utilizing cellulose-based hydrogels as adsorbents for aqueous contaminants. Ecofriendly multifunctional films with only biomass-based components have gathered significant interest from researchers as next-generation materials. Following this trend, a TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibril (TOCNF) film containing hydrophilic lignin (CL) was fabricated. To produce the lignin, peracetic acid oxidation was carried out, leading to the introduction of carboxyl groups into the lignin structure. By adding hydrophilic lignin, various characteristics (e.g., surface smoothness, UV protection, antimicrobial activity, and barrier properties) of the TOCNF film were enhanced. In particular, the shrinkage of CNF was successfully prevented by the addition of CL, which is attributed to the lower surface roughness (R a) from 18.93 nm to 4.99 nm. As a result, the smooth surface of the TOCNF/CL film was shown compared to neat TOCNF film and TOCNF/Kraft lignin composite film. In addition, the TOCNF/CL film showed a superior UV blocking ability of 99.9 % with high transparency of 78.4 %, which is higher than that of CNF-lignin composite films in other research. Also, water vapor transmission rate was reduced after adding CL to TOCNF film. Consequently, the developed TOCNF/CL film can be potentially utilized in various applications, such as food packaging.
