Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare post-mortem CT findings with necropsy findings in domestic cats., Methods: Post-mortem CT and necropsies were performed in 20 cadavers of domestic cats. The sensitivity, specificity and agreement between the post-mortem CT and necropsy findings were determined., Results: There were a total of 315 post-mortem findings; 183 were identified by post-mortem CT and 132 were identified by necropsy. Post-mortem CT demonstrated a higher sensitivity to identify the findings mainly in bones. The higher indices of agreement between post-mortem CT and necropsy were related to abnormalities of pleural space, bones and joints., Conclusions and Relevance: This study demonstrated that post-mortem CT and necropsy provided different information. Thus, their use in conjunction with each other might improve the understanding of the cause of death and the identification of post-mortem lesions.

A previous study showed that a gastric intramural radiolucent band seen on radiographs and a gastric intramural hypoattenuating layer seen on computed tomography were due to the presence of gastric submucosal fat in a cat. There is no known prevalence and distribution pattern of this gastric submucosal fat in cats. This study was carried out to determine the prevalence and distribution pattern of submucosal fat in cat stomachs. Histologic examination of 41 cat stomachs was performed after scheduled killing of cats, obtained from animal shelters. The results revealed that submucosal fat was present in all stomachs. However, thickness and distribution pattern of the submucosal fat varied.

An intramural radiolucent band in the stomach wall can be seen on abdominal radiographs of cats without concurrent clinical gastrointestinal signs. A retrospective study of cats with normal abdominal radiographs and computed tomography (CT) was performed to determine the prevalence of this finding. This gastric radiolucent band was seen in 13 of 37 (35%) radiographs. There was no relationship between age, weight and relative obesity and the presence of this radiolucent band. Using CT, an intramural hypoattenuating layer was detected in the stomach wall of four of 15 (27%) cats. The intramural radiolucent band was visible on the radiographs in all four of those cats. This radiographic and CT finding was histologically determined to be normal fat in the gastric submucosa in one cat cadaver.
