Base-catalyzed Aldol condensation is the key step for the synthesis of methyl isopropyl ketone from methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and formaldehyde. To clarify the Aldol reaction between MEK and formaldehyde, various kinds of bases were screened and the effect of reaction parameters, such as catalyst doses, molar ratios of formaldehyde to MEK, reaction temperature and time on the performance of the selected catalyst, were investigated in detail. Results indicated that triethylamine was an effective catalyst for the Aldol reaction between MEK and formaldehyde. The catalytic Aldol condensation is proceeded via a combination of parallel and sequential reactions, with the selectivities of desired products adding up to 92% under conditions of 40℃ and a molar ratio of formaldehyde to MEK at 1.1.
