Ionic liquids are composed of an organic cation and a highly delocalized perfluorinated anion, which remain tight to each other and neutral across the extended liquid framework. Here we show that n-alkanes in millimolar amounts enable a sufficient ion charge separation to release the innate acidity of the ionic liquid and catalyze the industrially relevant alkylation of phenol, after generating homogeneous, self-stabilized, and surfactant-free microdroplets (1–5 μm). This extremely mild and simple protocol circumvents any external additive or potential ionic liquid degradation and can be extended to water, which spontaneously generates microdroplets (ca. 3 μm) and catalyzes Brönsted rather than Lewis acid reactions. These results open new avenues not only in the use of ionic liquids as acid catalysts/solvents but also in the preparation of surfactant-free, well-defined ionic liquid microemulsions., R.G. thanks the ITQ and Severo Ochoa program for the concession of a fellowship. To date, a plethora of electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) have been proposed. For evaluating their electrocatalytic behavior the determination of the onset potential in each studied electrolyte is a key parameter. Nevertheless, this evaluation becomes particularly problematic for first- transition metal catalysts as well as by the use of electroactive collectors ( e.g. Ni foams) whose redox peaks overlap the onset potential. A usual solution to detect the onset potential requires the availabil- ity of in-situ mass spectrometric determination of the generated oxygen. In this work, we present fast and easier available cyclic voltammetry and coulovoltammetric responses to determine the onset poten- tials of three benchmark electrocatalysts: a layered double hydroxide, a Prussian blue analogue and a β-Layered hydroxide. Cyclic coulovoltammetric responses allow, as we demonstrate here, a quantitative separation in the same potential range of the charge consumed by reversible (redox) reactions and the charge consumed by the irreversible reaction: the oxygen release. Quantifying the irreversible charges (that correspond to the OER) for different anodic potential limits permits the unambiguous determina- tion of both, the onset potential and the Tafel slope values without the catalyst redox contributions. As far as we know, this is the first time that this fast, available and cheap methodology has been applied for the OER determination. Thus, coulovoltammetry arises as a friendly and powerful tool for the investigation of electrocatalytic performances. Hybrids and composite materials offer a synergic combination of polymer and inorganic features. The integration of specific functionalities at the nanoscale leads to the improvement of the characteristics of macroscopic materials. In this context, the attractiveness of multifunctional polymer–inorganic nanoparticles is remarkable. The relative arrangement of the components forming the hybrid nanostructure determines the accessibility of the functionalities, the properties, and the applicability of the material. Colloidal methods have been traditionally used for the preparation of hybrid nanoparticles, but the precise control of their morphology remains still a challenge. The objective of this thesis is to establish the bases for the preparation of multifunctional polymer–metal oxide hybrid nanoparticles and capsules with a morphology controlled according to the application. The miniemulsion technique was used to overcome the structural restrictions of other synthetic platforms. For this aim, inorganic species with complementary catalytic (ceria and titania) and magnetic (magnetite) properties were simultaneously incorporated within different polymer supports (polystyrene, PMMA, and polyurethane) via miniemulsion polymerization processes and their variations. The inorganic species were functionalized with different silanes. The control of the hybrid morphology was approached by tuning the differences of polarity and the interfacial chemistry involved between the inorganic functionalities and the polymer. The chemical structure of the coupling agent was related to the specific deposition of metal oxides nanoparticles on the polymer surface, within the matrix or to the formation of Janus-like structures. The control allowed by this strategy was used for the preparation of magnetoresponsive polymer-supported catalysts. The catalytic functionalities were also incorporated by functionalization of the polymer surface with chiral units of amino acids. The hybrid nanoparticles were proposed for heterogeneous and enantioselective catalysis with industrial relevance. In addition, miniemulsions were used for the preparation of a specific type of particles with a liquid core (capsules), which were exploited for the encapsulation of hydrated salts as phase change materials for energy storage applications. The efficiency and scalability of the synthetic strategy was studied and related to the performance of the product in energy-related applications. In this fashion, the work proposes the substitution of traditional surfactants by surface active monomers (surfmers) and inorganic nanoparticles as functional emulsifiers. In summary, this thesis proves the versatility of the miniemulsion technique as a synthetic platform for the preparation of multifunctional hybrid nanomaterials with a controlled structure for catalytic and energy–related applications.

We report two new single‐ion magnets (SIMs) of a family of oxydiacetate lanthanide complexes with D3 symmetry to test the predictive capabilities of complete active space ab initio methods (CASSCF and CASPT2) and the semiempirical radial effective charge (REC) model. Comparison of the theoretical predictions of the energy levels, wave functions and magnetic properties with detailed spectroscopic and magnetic characterisation is used to critically discuss the limitations of these theoretical approaches. The need for spectroscopic information for a reliable description of the properties of lanthanide SIMs is emphasised. A tetravalent uranium compound with a radical azobenzene ligand, namely, [{(SiMe2NPh)3‐tacn}UIV(η2‐N2Ph2.)] (2), was obtained by one‐electron reduction of azobenzene by the trivalent uranium compound [UIII{(SiMe2NPh)3‐tacn}] (1). Compound 2 was characterized by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction and 1H NMR, IR, and UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy. The magnetic properties of 2 and precursor 1 were studied by static magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements, which for the former revealed single‐molecule magnet behaviour for the first time in a mononuclear UIV compound, whereas trivalent uranium compound 1 does not exhibit slow relaxation of the magnetization at low temperatures. A first approximation to the magnetic behaviour of these compounds was attempted by combining an effective electrostatic model with a phenomenological approach using the full single‐ion Hamiltonian. Experimental evidence on the efficiency of 2,2'4,4'-tetramethoxybenzil for UV-light energy dissipation is provided. A novel iridium complex, [bis-(2-phenylpyridine)(2-carboxy-4-dimethylaminopyridine)iridium(III)] (N984), was synthesized and characterized using spectroscopic and electrochemical methods; a solution processable OLED device incorporating the N984 complex displays electroluminescence spectra with a narrow bandwidth of 70 nm at half of its intensity, with colour coordinates of x = 0.322; y = 0.529 that are very close to those suggested by the PAL standard for a green emitter. The ease of production, the extreme toxicity of organophosphorus-containing nerve agents, and their facile use in terrorism attacks underscores the need to develop accurate systems to detect these chemicals. Among different technologies we review here recent advances in the design of chromo-fluorogenic methods for the specific detection of nerve agents. Optical sensing (especially colorimetric detection) requires usually low-cost and widely used instrumentation and offers the possibility of so-called “naked eye detection”. Recent reported examples suggest that the application of chromo-fluorogenic supramolecular concepts for the chromogenic or fluorogenic sensing of nerve agents might be an area of increasing interest that would allow developing systems able to overcome some of the limitations shown by classical analytical methods. Here we report the synthesis and characterisation of a polymer made up of a system of parallel 2-D grids of Fe(II) ions linked by [Au(CN)2]– bridges and its transformation into a new system of three interpenetrated 3-D coordination open frameworks with the NbO topology. Experimental evidence has been obtained for the involvement of encounter complexes between both enantiomers of a π,π* triplet excited ketone and a chiral phenol or indole. We have studied the dependence of the chemical reaction mechanism of L-lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) on the protonation state of titratable residues and on the level of the quantum mechanical (QM) description by means of hybrid quantum-mechanical/molecular-mechanical (QM/MM) methods; this methodology has allowed clarification of the timing of the hydride transfer and proton transfer components that hitherto had not been possible to state definitively. Anew phase has been observed during the sodiumintercalation of hafnium nitride chloride as intermediate between the host β-HfNCl and the already reported Na 0.29 HfNCl with Tc of 24 K; the new intermediate shows interlayer spacings ranging from 9.48 to 9.67 A°, corresponds to a second stage intercalate of HfNCl and is superconducting with a critical temperature of 20 K. We describe a novel titanium phthalocyanine that shows no aggregation when anchored to nanocrystalline TiO2 films through its axial carboxylated ligand without the use of co-adsorbents; state selective electron injection into the TiO2 is demonstrated, resulting in efficient photocurrent generation in dye sensitised photoelectrochemical solar cells. Enantiomerically pure dirhodium(II) complexes with ortho-metalated p-substituted aryl phosphines have been shown to be enantio- and diastereoselective in the cyclopropanation of styrene by ethyl diazoacetate. Silica-based materials with hierarchical pore systems at three different length scales (small mesopores–large mesopores–macropores) have been prepared through a nanotectonic approach by using mesoporous nanoparticles as building blocks; the resulting materials present a highly accessible foam-like architecture and can be prepared as large monoliths. {Fe(pmd)2[Cu(CN)2]2} (pmd = pyrimidine) displays a rigid two-dimensional structure and undergoes thermal- and optical-driven spin crossover behaviour; cooperative elastic coupling between iron(II) ions in the framework induces thermal hysteresis in the HS↔LS conversion and sigmoidal HS→LS relaxation of the photo-induced HS state at low temperatures. Reaction of [FeIII(bipy)(CN)4]¯ with fully solvated MII cations [M = Co (1) and Mn (2)] produces the isostructural bis double zigzag chains [[FeIII(bipy)(CN)4]2MII(H2O)]·MeCN·1/2H2O; 1 exhibits intrachain ferromagnetic and interchain antiferromagnetic couplings, slow magnetic relaxation and hysteresis effects. Tris(benzene-1,2-dithiolate)molybdenum(VI) reacts rapidly and quantitatively with tetrabutylammonium hydroxide to yield the corresponding Mo(V) and Mo(IV) complexes and hydrogen peroxide; the reaction has been executed in dry tetrahydrofuran where the reaction rate shows a fair dependence on complex and OH2 concentrations. Thermally stable porous aluminophosphates (ICMUV-3) with P/Al molar ratios in the range 0.15

The 2D honeycomb-like layered iron(iii)–nickel(ii) cyanidebridged complex [Ni(cyclam)]3[Fe(CN)6]2·nH2O exhibits ferromagnetic intralayer and antiferromagnetic interlayer interactions; above 3 K the magnetic properties are typical of a metamagnet with Hc = 5000 G, whereas below 3 K a canted structure is formed, leading to a long range ferromagnetic ordering.
