This study investigated the impact of the equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) combined with heat treatments on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AlSi10Mg alloys fabricated via selective laser melting (SLM) and gravity casting. Special attention was directed towards determining the effect of post-fabrication heat treatments on the microstructural evolution of AlSi10Mg alloy fabricated using two different routes. Three initial alloy conditions were considered prior to ECAP deformation: (1) as-cast in solution treated (T4) condition, (2) SLM in T4 condition, (3) SLM subjected to low-temperature annealing. Light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction line broadening analysis, and electron backscattered diffraction analysis were used to characterize the microstructures before and after ECAP. The results indicated that SLM followed by low-temperature annealing led to superior mechanical properties, relative to the two other conditions. Microscopic analyses revealed that the partial-cellular structure contributed to strong work hardening. This behavior enhanced the material’s strength because of the enhanced accumulation of geometrically necessary dislocations during ECAP deformation.

Casting is routinely used for acute andpost-operative immobilization and remains a cornerstone in the non-operative management of fractures and deformities. Theapplication of a properly fitted and well-molded cast, especially for a trainee, can bechallenging. We present a simple method ofprolonging cure time of fiberglass cast — placing ice in the dip water. Eight-ply, five-inch fiberglass cast was circumferentially applied to an aluminum-wrapped cardboard cylinder. An electronic, 2-channel temperature sensor (TR-71wf Temp Logger, T&D Corporation, Matsumoto, Japan), accurateto 0.1ºC and accurate to ±0.3ºC, was placed between the fourth and fifth layers of fiberglass. Thirty total casts were tested using 9±1ºC (cold), 22±1ºC (ambient), and 36±1ºC (warm) dip water. Room temperature was maintained at 24±1ºC. Cast temperatures were measured during theexothermic reaction generated by the castcuring. Peak temperatures and cure timeswere recorded. Cure time was defined as the point of downward deflection on the time-temperature curve immediately after peak. Cure and peak temperatures were compared among groups using analysis of variance. Mean cure time was 3.5±0.1 minutes forwarm water, 5.0±0.4 minutes for ambient water and 7.0±0.5 minutes for cold water. Peak temperature, measured between layers 4 and 5 of the cast material, was 36.6±0.8ºC for warm water, 31.1±1.4ºC for ambient water and 25.2±0.5ºC for cold water. Contribution gives an overview of knowledge about the method of centrifugal casting with orientate on Tekcast system. Company Tekcast Industries has developed a device for centrifugal casting, extending the area of production of castings or prototyping of metal or plastic. Materials suitable for the centrifugal casting with flexible operating parameters may include non-ferrous metal alloy based on zinc or aluminum or non-metallic materials such as polyester resins, polyurethane resins, epoxy resins, waxes and the like. The casting process is particularly suitable for a wide range of commercial castings and decorative objects.

The stress corrosion cracking of the sand cast magnesium alloys, Elektron 21 (ASTM-EV31A) and AZ91E, was studied using compact tension specimens in distilled water and in Mg(OH)(2) saturated 0.1 M NaCl solution under constant load. EV31A showed a higher K-ISCC than AZ91E, but exhibited a higher stage II crack growth rate than the latter. Fractography showed transgranular cracking for AZ91E and EV31A in distilled water, whereas mixed intergranular and transgranular cracking was observed for EV31A in the chloride environment. This paper presents the development of thermal expansion model for casted aluminium silicon carbide. Thermal expansion in the casting process is one of the most important parameters that influence the casting quality. The thermal expansion model for casted aluminium silicon carbide is developed by the squeeze casting method. A model of numbers evolved for the prediction of the unidirectional fibre and matrix reinforced composites was presented. The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTEs) of aluminium silicon carbide fibres reinforced material was significantly influenced by the thermal stresses and interfaces between matrix and fibres. The thermal expansion behaviour of the casted aluminium silicon carbide fibres reinforced composite relies on the thermal expansion of the fibres, and influenced by the onset of interfacial strength and residual stress state. The validation shows a good agreement among the model and experimental result of LM6 alloys silicon reinforces. As the result, the thermal expansion model for casted aluminium silicon carbide could predict the surface roughness of the casting product.

Scana Björneborg är en av Europas ledande producenter av tunga friformsmidda detaljer och har eget stålverk, egen smedja, värmebehandlingsanläggning och maskinpark. På Scana Björneborg gjuts göt av järnskrot, varpå de smids, värmebehandlas och maskinbearbetas till valsar. Efter maskinbearbetning kontrolleras valsarna med ultraljud för att hitta eventuella inre fel. Specifikationerna från kund för hur stora indikationer får vara är strama och stora kostnader uppstår i samband med reklamationer, kassationer, omarbeten och förseningar. Felen har blivit alltmer frekventa och Scana Björneborg har satt samman två projektgrupper för att få försöka få bukt på dem. Examensarbetet skall understödja båda dessa grupper och genom undersökningen skapa underlag för vidare beslut. Undersökningen delades in i tre olika moment: * Statistik och information som kunde användas för att hitta eventuella samband och orsaker till de olika feltyperna samlades i en databas. * Den samlade statistiken och informationen organiserades, förenklades och analyserades sedan med hjälp av programmet SIMCA, ett program gjort för multivariata analyser av stora datamängder. Eventuella samband granskades och analyserades därefter manuellt för att väga och gallra resultatet . * Sex ytnära fel i tre olika detaljer öppnades upp för kartläggning av vilken typ av defekter det rörde sig om, och en metallografisk undersökning i ljus- och svepelektronmikroskop och analys av defekternas sammansättning gjordes. SIMCA-analys av insamlad statistik med avseende på centrumfel och vidare granskning och analys av dess resultat antyder att hög smidesvikt, hög Vanadinhalt, stukning, hög nedsmidningsgrad och smidestid per ton i den följden är viktiga faktorer vid uppkomsten av centrumfel, och att en viss samverkan finns mellan dem. Scana Steel Björneborg AB casts ingots from iron scrap. The ingots are then forged, heat treated and machined into rolls. After the machining the rolls are tested with ultrasonic testing equipment to look for indications of internal defects. The specifications on how big the indications are allowed to be from the client are rigid and large costs come up because of reclamations, discarding, reworking and delays. The defects have become increasingly more frequent and Scana Steel Björneborg AB has put together two groups to try and get control over the problem. The thesis is meant to support the two groups by investigating the internal defects, and to create a platform to take further decisions from. The investigation was made up of three parts: * Statistics and information that could be used to find connections and cause of the internal defects was gathered in a data base. * The gathered statistics and information was organized, simplified and analyzed with SIMCA, a computer software made for multivariate analyzing of large amounts of information. The results of the SIMCA-simulation were then checked further manually to weigh and lay down the fairness of the results. * Six near-surface defects in three parts were opened up to map the types of defects and a metallographic examination in optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and spectrometer analysis of the defects’ composition was made. The SIMCA analysis of gathered statistics concerning axis-centered defects and later manual analysis of the results showed that high forging weight, high Vanadium content, high degree of forging and low forging-time per tonne all relate to the creation of axis-centered defects, and that some interaction is present between them. The SIMCA analysis concerning near-surface defects showed that the chosen parameters do not relate with the creation of near-surface defects. The method is deemed unsuitable for further investigations. The metallographic examination of the six near-surface defects showed that all six defects resemble each other in appearance and composition. The most common elements in these inclusions are Aluminum and heightened contents of Carbon and Oxygen. These elements are all naturally occurring elements in the steel and because of this the inclusions are not thought to be exogenous.

Background Numerous designs are used to the treatment of Early Onset Scoliosis. For example, a Thoraco-Lumbo-Sacral Orthosis (TLSO) is constructed using Polyethylene (PE). In addition, a series of castings has been implemented using cast material (3M, BSN Medical). The cast material has some significant advantages over the PE design including: growth preserving, improved compliance, decreased invasiveness, delaying or avoiding surgery, and the ability to allow the skin to breathe. However, the mechanical effectiveness of the cast material brace as compared to the TLSO is unknown, thus providing the objective of this study. Methods A total of 23 standardized tensile tests were performed on the Delta-Cast Soft® and 3MTM ScotchcastTM Plus Casting Tape in order to obtain mechanical properties (Young’s and shear moduli and Poisson ratios). Using a radiograph of a thoracic spine, the size of twelve vertebrae and eleven intervertebral discs were measured and used to create a finite element spine model. Simulations using this model were used to establish mechanical loads which were then applied to finite element models of the TLSO and cast jacket. The thicknesses and number of material layers was varied in these models. Multiple simulations were performed. Results It was found that a 6.6.mm thick cast jacket made of Delta-Cast Soft® had a maximum deformation of 4.7 mm, a maximum stress of 2.9 MPa and a structural factor of safety of 5.71. On the other hand, a 4 mm thick jacket made of PE had a maximum deformation of 2 mm, a maximum stress of 8.9 MPa and a structural factor of safety of 2.70. The cast jacket was 3.5 times lighter and had a material of cost 1/5 of the PE brace. Conclusions Based on the results, either design will generate the proper constraint forces to maintain spinal correction. But, based on the design parameters (thickness, mechanical properties, structural factor of safety and cost) the brace made of cast material, though slightly thicker has superior structural and cost benefits. Thus, from the biomechanical point of view, the cast brace is more efficient than the PE brace.
