Mixing state and density are two key parameters of aerosol particles affecting their impacts on radiative forcing and human health. Here a single-particle aerosol mass spectrometer in tandem with a differential mobility analyzer and an aerodynamic aerosol classifier was deployed during the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games (OWG) to investigate the impacts of emission controls on particle mixing state and density. Our results show the dominance of carbonaceous particles comprising mainly total elemental carbon (Total-EC, 13.4 %), total organic carbon (Total-OC, 10.5 %) and Total-ECOC (47.1 %). Particularly, the particles containing organic carbon and sulfate were enhanced significantly during OWG, although those from primary emissions decreased. The composition of carbonaceous particles also changed significantly which was characterized by the decreases in EC mixed with nitrate and sulfate (EC-NS), EC mixed with potassium nitrate (KEC-N), and amine-containing particles and increase in ECOC mixed with nitrate and sulfate (ECOC-NS). This result indicates that emission controls during OWG reduced the mixing of EC with inorganic aerosol species and amines yet increased the mixing of EC with organic aerosol. The average effective density (ρeff) of aerosol particles (150–300 nm) was 1.15 g cm -3 during the non-Olympic Winter Games (nOWG), with higher values during OWG (1.26 g cm -3) due to the increase in secondary particle contribution. In addition, the ρeff of most particles increased with the increases in pollution levels and relative humidity, yet they varied differently for different types of particles, highlighting the impacts of aging and formation processes on the changes of particle density and mixing state. Precipitation is a critical factor in changing aerosol life cycle, yet its impact on aerosol species with different properties in megacities remains unclear. Here we characterized the changes of PM2.5 aerosol species during rainfall processes in five summers (2018–2022) in Beijing using highly time‐resolved measurements of aerosol chemical speciation monitor along with precipitation. Average pattern of 233 rainfall processes showed that over 30% decreases in aerosol species before rain start were due to the increased wind speed, and the subsequent decreases were caused by the combined effects of precipitation and winds with an average scavenging of 62%–100% in 1 hr. We also observed very different responses of aerosol species to precipitation depending on intensities, duration and formation mechanisms. During the rainfall processes, aerosol composition showed decreased contributions of organics and sulfate, particularly from late night to morning, while increased contributions of nitrate and chloride due to enhanced gas‐particle partitioning associated with the increase of relative humidity and the decrease of temperature. The scavenging rates of aerosol species significantly increased as the increase of rainfall intensity (>5 mm hr−1) and duration (>4 hr). However, the scavenging effect of light rainfall was negligible although the cumulative contribution was ∼50% due to high frequency, and even caused increases in nitrate and chloride. The case analysis of aerosol evolution during weak and heavy rainfall events further illustrated the dual impacts of precipitation on aerosol species through wet scavenging and secondary formation. Photochemical aging is a key atmospheric processing, yet the changes in physicochemical properties of organic aerosol (OA) during photochemical aging of primary emissions from cooking and burning are less understood. Here we conducted 12 burning (straw, wood, and coal) and cooking experiments to characterize the evolution of size distributions, volatility, and glass transition temperature (Tg) from fresh smoke to aged OA with an equivalent photochemical age of ∼1.5 days using an oxidation flow reactor‐thermodenuder‐aerosol mass spectrometer system. The mass spectra of OA showed significant changes during photochemical aging, for example, the rapid degradation of m/z 60 for straw and wood burning OA, and the large increase in f44 (fraction of m/z 44 in OA) for all OA. The contributions of non‐volatile compounds to the total OA in aged burning OA (1.6%–5.3%) decreased considerably compared with those in fresh burning smoke (2.3%–17.1%), suggesting that photochemical aging of primary emissions for ∼1.5 days produced more volatile secondary OA (SOA). Consistently, the pronounced formation of SOA below 150 nm was observed, and it showed more volatile properties than aged large particles. The Tg of OA under dry conditions (Tg,org) was estimated based on volatility distributions, and the results showed increased Tg,org during photochemical aging of biomass burning and coal combustion emissions, while decreased Tg,org for aged cooking OA. Overall, our results illustrate the different changes in size distributions, volatility, and Tg,org through photochemical aging of different primary emissions, which in turn affect their impacts on radiative forcing and human health. The vertical distribution of black carbon (BC), as well as its mixing state, is of great concern due to BC's strong regional climatic and environmental effects. In this study, vertical measurements were conducted through a moveable container based on a meteorological tower in the Beijing urban area during June and July. A total of 112 vertical profiles (0–240 m), including the concentrations of BC, O 3 , NO x and the optical properties of aerosols, were obtained. Based on BC concentration, the vertical profiles could be classified into four categories: uniform, gradual decrease, sharp decrease and sudden increase. The uniform type indicates strong vertical mixing with similar pollutant concentrations along the vertical direction. The gradual and sharp decrease types indicate stable vertical conditions with higher pollutant concentrations on the ground and lower concentrations at higher altitudes. Due to the strong radiation in summer, the vertical profiles exhibited a clear diurnal variation in which ∼ 80 % of profiles were uniform during the daytime and ∼ 40 %–90 % of profiles were of the gradual and sharp decrease types at night. O 3 is an exception, and its concentration generally increases with height, even under strong vertical mixing conditions. The size distribution of the BC core varied slightly along the vertical direction, and the coating thickness, denoted by the diameter ratio between the BC-containing particle and BC core (Dp/Dc), of BC increased with height under stable conditions. Although the coating thickness could increase the absorption ability with an average absorption enhancement of 1.25 at 23:00 LT (local time: UTC + 8), the vertical difference of Dp/Dc (2 %) was much lower than that of BC concentration (∼ 35 %). The vertical variation in absorption ability was mainly caused by the variation in BC concentration. In addition, O 3 and Dp/Dc occasionally increased during 06:00–08:00 but remained stable during 08:00–10:00. Vertical mixing and transportation from upper heights, such as the residual layer, could significantly influence the pollutant properties on the surface during early mornings. This study exhibits a continuous vertical picture of BC and its mixing state in urban areas, which would be helpful for understanding BC's regional environmental effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Water-soluble and water-insoluble organic aerosol (WSOA and WIOA) constitute a large fraction of fine particles in winter in northern China, yet our understanding of their sources and processes are still limited. Here we have a comprehensive characterization of WSOA in cold season in Beijing. Particularly, we present the first mass spectral characterization of WIOA by integrating online and offline organic aerosol measurements from high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometer. Our results showed that WSOA on average accounted for 59 % of the total OA and comprised dominantly secondary OA (SOA, 69 %). The WSOA composition showed significant changes during the transition season from autumn to winter. While the photochemical-related SOA dominated WSOA (51 %) in early November, the oxidized SOA from biomass burning increased substantially from 8 % to 29 % during the heating season. Comparatively, local primary OA dominantly from cooking aerosol contributed the major fraction of WSOA during clean periods. WIOA showed largely different spectral patterns from WSOA which were characterized by prominent hydrocarbon ions series and low oxygen-to-carbon (O/C = 0.19) and organic mass-to-organic carbon (OM/OC = 1.39) ratios. The nighttime WIOA showed less oxidized properties (O/C = 0.16 vs. 0.24) with more pronounced polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) signals than daytime, indicating the impacts of enhanced coal combustion emissions on WIOA. The evolution process of WSOA and WIOA was further demonstrated by the triangle plot of f44 (fraction of m/z 44 in OA) vs. f43 , f44 vs. f60 , and the Van Krevelen diagram (H/C vs. O/C). We also found more oxidized WSOA and an increased contribution of SOA in WSOA compared with previous winter studies in Beijing, indicating that the changes in OA composition due to clean air act have affected the sources and properties of WSOA. Large reductions in anthropogenic emissions during the Chinese New Year (CNY) holiday in Beijing have been well reported. However, the changes during the CNY of 2021 are different because most people stayed in Beijing to control the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Here a high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-AMS) was deployed for characterization of the changes in size-resolved aerosol composition and sources during the CNY. We found that the reductions in traffic-related NO x and fossil fuel-related organic aerosol (OA), and cooking OA (1.3–12.7%) during the CNY of 2021 were much smaller than those in previous CNY holidays of 2013, 2015, and 2020. In contrast, the mass concentrations of secondary aerosol species except nitrate showed ubiquitous increases (17.6–30.4%) during the CNY of 2021 mainly due to a 4-day severe haze episode. OA composition also changed substantially during the CNY of 2021. In particular, we observed a large increase by nearly a factor of 2 in oxidized primary OA likely from biomass burning, and a decrease of 50.1% in aqueous-phase secondary OA. A further analysis of the severe haze episode during the CNY illustrated a rapid transition of secondary formation from photochemical to aqueous-phase processing followed by a scavenging process, leading to significant changes in aerosol composition, size distributions, and oxidation degree of OA. A parameterization relationship between oxygen-to-carbon (O/C) and f 44 (fraction of m/z 44 in OA) from a collocated capture vaporizer aerosol chemical speciation monitor (CV-ACSM) was developed, which has a significant implication for characterization of OA evolution and the impacts on hygroscopicity due to the rapidly increased deployments of CV-ACSM worldwide. Atmospheric loading of black carbon aerosols influences air quality and visibility, and their mixing state and aerosol chemistry were sensitive to both emission scenarios and regional transport. In this study, the aerodynamic size-resolved mixing state of refractory black carbon aerosols (rBC) was investigated using a novel tandem system consisting of an aerodynamic aerosol classifier (AAC), a single particle soot photometer (SP2), and single-particle-aerosol mass spectrometry (SPA-MS) during the XXIV Olympic Winter Games (OWG) at an urban site in Beijing. Particles with aerodynamic diameter (D ae) of 200 nm and 300 nm were selected by AAC to focus on the effect of relative differences in morphology on the coating thickness, coating compositions, and optical properties of rBC particles. We found that rBC-containing particles with D ae of 300 nm were characterized by a rBC core with a count median diameter (CMD) of 108 ± 4 nm that typically have regular morphology (χ : m e a n ∼ 1) , higher relative coating thickness (RCT: mean ∼1.9), and strong light absorption enhancement (E abs : mean ∼1.5). The rBC-containing particles with D ae = 200 nm normally had irregular shapes (χ : m e a n ∼ 1.4) and weak E abs (E abs : mean ∼1.37). Classification based on air mass clustering and air pollution level revealed that the coating thickness of rBC particles only exhibited unimodal patterns under clean air conditions and distinct bimodal distributions under heavy pollution conditions, implying multiple origins of rBC particles, even during OWG periods. The coating thickness and E abs of rBC particles were greater when influenced by the higher RH air from east. Furthermore, the chemical compositions of the rBC coating quantitatively determined by SPA-MS were used to estimate the possible origins of the D ae = 300 nm, featured by a thicker coating thickness and stronger light absorption enhancement. Our results showed that rBC particles were primarily mixed with organics, nitrate, and sulfate during the XXIV OWG period. The organic components have a limited role in increasing rBC coatings under polluted conditions, while the alkali metal ions (K and Na) associated with traffic emissions and the secondary inorganic species favor the formation of thick coatings. Higher RH makes limited contributions to rBC mixed with sulfate and organics only (BCOC*_S) and pure BC. The relatively fresh BC could directly mix with organics and sulfate at low RH levels while evolving to mix with nitrate at high RH conditions. Secondary organic aerosols (SOA) constitute a large fraction of atmospheric aerosols, yet our knowledge of the formation and aging processes of SOA in megacities of China is still limited. In this work, the formation and aging processes of SOA in winter in Beijing was investigated using a high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) and an oxidation flow reactor (OFR). Our results showed that the OA enhancement from OH aging peaked at ∼3.9 equivalent days with an average enhancement of 0.9 (±0.3) μg m−3. Positive matrix factorization analysis of AMS-OFR data identified three primary OA (POA) and two SOA factors. While the concentrations of POA factors decreased as a function of photochemical age, the two SOA factors showed clear enhancements by 2.5 and 4.3 μg m−3 at ∼3.9 and ∼2.6 days of equivalent photochemical age, respectively. The average contribution of SOA to the total OA was 47% in ambient air and 87% in OFR-oxidized ambient air. The elevated oxygen-to-carbon (O/C) ratio from 0.49 to 0.77–0.82 and the decreased hydrogen-to-carbon (H/C) from 1.37 to ∼1.1 highlighted the formation of more oxidized SOA during photochemical aging in winter in Beijing. The ubiquitous SOA enhancement as a function of OA levels indicated the significant formation potential of SOA in winter, and it varied differently among different episodes. In particular, we observed a maximum SOA enhancement of 38.6 μg m−3 during a biomass burning event.
