Emerging evidence points out that the responses of soil organic carbon (SOC) to nitrogen (N) addition differ along the soil profile, highlighting the importance of synthesizing results from different soil layers. Here, using a global meta‐analysis, we found that N addition significantly enhanced topsoil (0–30 cm) SOC by 3.7% (±1.4%) in forests and grasslands. In contrast, SOC in the subsoil (30–100 cm) initially increased with N addition but decreased over time. The model selection analysis revealed that experimental duration and vegetation type are among the most important predictors across a wide range of climatic, environmental, and edaphic variables. The contrasting responses of SOC to N addition indicate the importance of considering deep soil layers, particularly for long‐term continuous N deposition. Finally, the lack of depth‐dependent SOC responses to N addition in experimental and modeling frameworks has likely resulted in the overestimation of changes in SOC storage under enhanced N deposition. Much research focuses on increasing carbon storage in mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM), in which carbon may persist for centuries to millennia. However, MAOM-targeted management is insufficient because the formation pathways of persistent soil organic matter are diverse and vary with environmental conditions. Effective management must also consider particulate organic matter (POM). In many soils, there is potential for enlarging POM pools, POM can persist over long time scales, and POM can be a direct precursor of MAOM. We present a framework for context-dependent management strategies that recognizes soils as complex systems in which environmental conditions constrain POM and MAOM formation. Increasing C storage in mineral-associated organic matter is insufficient due to diverse, environmentally specific persistent soil organic matter formation. Soil organic carbon management is a nature-based carbon dioxide removal technology at the same time contributing to soil health and agricultural productivity. The soil science communities are refuting the traditional assumptions of the nature of soil organic matter (SOM) as based on 'humic substances' that are operationally-defined and have not been observed by contemporary, in situ spectromicroscopic techniques. Instead, new theories suggest that the interactions between molecular diversity of organic compounds, their spatial heterogeneity and temporal variability controls the formation and persistence of SOM. A mechanistic understanding of these processes occurring within organo-mineral and organo-organic assemblages requires non-invasive techniques that minimize any disturbance to the physical and chemical integrity of the sample. Here, we present a theory-driven review where a combination of in situ methods serve as potential solutions to better understand the persistence and dynamics of SOM and its effects on nutrient distribution at a micro- and nano-scale. We explore underlying theories in light of advances in available methodologies, their historical development and future opportunities. Examples of interdisciplinary approaches that have been utilized in other areas of science but not in soils offer both deductive and inductive analytical opportunities. We show how different conceptual methods across scales inform each other, and how important and indispensable high-resolution investigations are to resolving next-generation questions. Increased human‐derived nitrogen (N) loading in terrestrial ecosystems has caused widespread ecosystem‐level phosphorus (P) limitation. In response, plants and soil micro‐organisms adopt a series of P‐acquisition strategies to offset N loading‐induced P limitation. Many of these strategies impose costs on carbon (C) allocation by plants and soil micro‐organisms; however, it remains unclear how P‐acquisition strategies affect soil C cycling. Herein, we review the literature on the effects of N loading on P limitation and outline a conceptual overview of how plant and microbial P‐acquisition strategies may affect soil organic carbon (SOC) stabilization and decomposition in terrestrial ecosystems.Excessive input of N significantly enhances plant biomass production, soil acidification, and produces plant litterfall with high N/P ratios, which can aggravate ecosystem‐level P limitation.Long‐term N loading can cause plants and soil micro‐organisms to alter their functional traits to increase P acquisition. Plants can release carboxylate exudates and phosphatases, modify root morphological traits, facilitate the formation of symbiotic associations with mycorrhizal fungi and stimulate the abundance of P‐mineralizing and P‐solubilizing micro‐organisms. Releasing carboxylate exudates and phosphatases could accelerate SOC decomposition, whereas changing symbiotic associations and root morphological traits (e.g. an increase in fine root length) may contribute to higher SOC stabilization. Increased relative abundances of P‐mineralizing and P‐solubilizing bacteria can accelerate P mining and SOC decay, which may decrease microbial C use efficiency and subsequently lower SOC sequestration.The trade‐offs between different plant P‐acquisition strategies under N loading should be among future research priorities due to their cascading impacts on soil C storage. Quantifying ecosystem thresholds for P adaption to increased N loading is important because P‐acquisition strategies are effective when N loading is below the N threshold. Moreover, understanding the response of P‐acquisition strategies at different levels of native soil N availability could provide insight to divergent P‐acquisition strategies across sites and ecosystems. Altogether, P‐acquisition strategies should be explicitly considered in Earth System Models to generate more realistic predictions of the effects of N loading on soil C cycling. Soil carbon sequestration arises from the interplay of carbon input and stabilization, which vary in space and time. Assessing the resulting microscale carbon distribution in an intact pore space, however, has so far eluded methodological accessibility. Here, we explore the role of soil moisture regimes in shaping microscale carbon gradients by a novel mapping protocol for particulate organic matter and carbon in the soil matrix based on a combination of Osmium staining, X-ray computed tomography, and machine learning. With three different soil types we show that the moisture regime governs C losses from particulate organic matter and the microscale carbon redistribution and stabilization patterns in the soil matrix. Carbon depletion around pores (aperture > 10 µm) occurs in a much larger soil volume (19–74%) than carbon enrichment around particulate organic matter (1%). Thus, interacting microscale processes shaped by the moisture regime are a decisive factor for overall soil carbon persistence. Correlations between organic carbon (OC) and fine mineral particles corroborate the important role of the abundance of soil minerals with reactive surfaces to bind and increase the persistence of organic matter (OM). The storage of OM broadly consists of particulate and mineral-associated forms. Correlative studies on the impact of fine mineral soil particles on OM storage mostly combined data from differing sites potentially confounded by other environmental factors. Here, we analyzed OM storage in a soil clay content gradient of 5–37% with similar farm management and mineral composition. Throughout the clay gradient, soils contained 14 mg OC g−1 on average in the bulk soil without showing any systematic increase. Density fractionation revealed that a greater proportion of OC was stored as occluded particulate OM in the high clay soils (18–37% clay). In low clay soils (5–18% clay), the fine mineral-associated fractions had up to two times higher OC contents than high clay soils. Specific surface area measurements revealed that more mineral-associated OM was related to higher OC loading. This suggests that there is a potentially thicker accrual of more OM at the same mineral surface area within fine fractions of the low clay soils. With increasing clay content, OM storage forms contained more particulate OC and mineral-associated OC with a lower surface loading. Clay minerals and pedogenic metal (oxyhydr)oxides are the most reactive soil mineral constituents controlling the long-term persistence of organic carbon (OC) in terrestrial ecosystems. However, their co-occurrence in most soils complicates direct assessment of their individual contribution to OC persistence. Making use of unique mineralogical combinations in soils located in the East Usambara Mountains of Tanzania, we disentangled the contribution of clay-sized aluminous minerals (kaolinite, gibbsite) and pedogenic Fe (oxyhydr)oxides (predominant goethite and hematite) on OC storage and stabilization under natural forests and croplands. Topsoil samples, varying in contents but not types of aluminous clays and pedogenic Fe (oxyhydr)oxides, were identified by selective extractions, X-ray diffraction, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Associated abundance of particulate and mineral-associated organic matter (OM) was quantified by density fractionation and their changes during land-use conversion were determined as a measure of OC persistence. Additionally, we assessed the resistance of OC to chemical oxidation as well as microbial decomposition in a 50-day laboratory incubation. We found that the ratio of pedogenic Fe to aluminous clay is more consequential for OC storage and stabilization than their individual contents, despite the fact that Fe (oxyhydr)oxides generally exert a stronger impact on OC than aluminous clays. Conjunction of large amounts of Fe (oxyhydr)oxides with low aluminous clay contents caused the strongest accumulation of mineral-associated OC, a low soil respiration, high OC stability against chemical oxidation, and high OC persistence during land-use change. Our study suggests that certain mineralogical combinations in the humid tropics alleviate OM losses during land conversion because of the strong and selective mineral control on OC stabilization, particular if the weight ratio of pedogenic Fe to aluminous clay exceeds the threshold range of 0.44‒0.56. The largest terrestrial organic carbon pool, carbon in soils, is regulated by an intricate connection between plant carbon inputs, microbial activity, and the soil matrix. This is manifested by how microorganisms, the key players in transforming plant-derived carbon into soil organic carbon, are controlled by the physical arrangement of organic and inorganic soil particles. Here we conduct an incubation of isotopically labelled litter to study effects of soil structure on the fate of litter-derived organic matter. While microbial activity and fungal growth is enhanced in the coarser-textured soil, we show that occlusion of organic matter into aggregates and formation of organo-mineral associations occur concurrently on fresh litter surfaces regardless of soil structure. These two mechanisms—the two most prominent processes contributing to the persistence of organic matter—occur directly at plant–soil interfaces, where surfaces of litter constitute a nucleus in the build-up of soil carbon persistence. Geogenic organic carbon (GOC) from sedimentary rocks is an overlooked fraction in soils that has not yet been quantified but influences the composition, age, and stability of total organic carbon (OC) in soils. In this context, GOC is the OC in bedrock deposited during sedimentation. The contribution of GOC to total soil OC may vary, depending on the type of bedrock. However, no studies have been carried out to investigate the contribution of GOC derived from different terrestrial sedimentary rocks to soil OC contents. In order to fill this knowledge gap, 10 m long sediment cores from three sites recovered from Pleistocene loess, Miocene sand, and Triassic Red Sandstone were analysed at 1 m depth intervals, and the amount of GOC was calculated based on 14 C measurements. The 14 C ages of bulk sedimentary OC revealed that OC is comprised of both biogenic and geogenic components. The biogenic component relates to OC that entered the sediments from plant sources since soil development started. Assuming an average age for this biogenic component ranging from 1000–4000 years BP (before present), we calculated average amounts of GOC in the sediments starting at 1.5 m depth, based on measured 14 C ages. The median amount of GOC in the sediments was then taken, and its proportion of soil mass (g GOC per kg -1 fine soil) was calculated in the soil profile. All the sediments contained considerable amounts of GOC (median amounts of 0.10 g kg -1 in Miocene sand, 0.27 g kg -1 in Pleistocene loess, and 0.17 g kg -1 in Red Sandstone) compared with subsoil OC contents (between 0.53 and 15.21 g kg -1). Long-term incubation experiments revealed that the GOC appeared comparatively stable against biodegradation. Its possible contribution to subsoil OC stocks (0.3–1.5 m depth) ranged from 1 % to 26 % in soil developed in the Miocene sand, from 16 % to 21 % in the loess soil, and from 6 % to 36 % at the Red Sandstone site. Thus, GOC with no detectable 14 C content influenced the 14 C ages of subsoil OC and may partly explain the strong increase in 14 C ages observed in many subsoils. It has been shown that reactive soil minerals, specifically iron(III) (oxyhydr)oxides, can trap organic carbon in soils overlying intact permafrost, and may limit carbon mobilization and degradation as it is observed in other environments. However, the use of iron(III)-bearing minerals as terminal electron acceptors in permafrost environments, and thus their stability and capacity to prevent carbon mobilization during permafrost thaw, is poorly understood. We have followed the dynamic interactions between iron and carbon using a space-for-time approach across a thaw gradient in Abisko (Sweden), where wetlands are expanding rapidly due to permafrost thaw. We show through bulk (selective extractions, EXAFS) and nanoscale analysis (correlative SEM and nanoSIMS) that organic carbon is bound to reactive Fe primarily in the transition between organic and mineral horizons in palsa underlain by intact permafrost (41.8 ± 10.8 mg carbon per g soil, 9.9 to 14.8% of total soil organic carbon). During permafrost thaw, water-logging and O2 limitation lead to reducing conditions and an increase in abundance of Fe(III)-reducing bacteria which favor mineral dissolution and drive mobilization of both iron and carbon along the thaw gradient. By providing a terminal electron acceptor, this rusty carbon sink is effectively destroyed along the thaw gradient and cannot prevent carbon release with thaw. Iron minerals trap carbon in permafrost, preventing microbial degradation and release to the atmosphere as CO2, but the stability of this carbon as permafrost thaws is unclear. Rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations have increased interest in the potential for forest ecosystems and soils to act as carbon (C) sinks. While soil organic C contents often vary with tree species identity, little is known about if, and how, tree species influence the stability of C in soil. Using a 40 year old common garden experiment with replicated plots of eleven temperate tree species, we investigated relationships between soil organic matter (SOM) stability in mineral soils and 17 ecological factors (including tree tissue chemistry, magnitude of organic matter inputs to the soil and their turnover, microbial community descriptors, and soil physicochemical properties). We measured five SOM stability indices, including heterotrophic respiration, C in aggregate occluded particulate organic matter (POM) and mineral associated SOM, and bulk SOM δ15N and ∆14C. The stability of SOM varied substantially among tree species, and this variability was independent of the amount of organic C in soils. Thus, when considering forest soils as C sinks, the stability of C stocks must be considered in addition to their size. Further, our results suggest tree species regulate soil C stability via the composition of their tissues, especially roots. Stability of SOM appeared to be greater (as indicated by higher δ15N and reduced respiration) beneath species with higher concentrations of nitrogen and lower amounts of acid insoluble compounds in their roots, while SOM stability appeared to be lower (as indicated by higher respiration and lower proportions of C in aggregate occluded POM) beneath species with higher tissue calcium contents. The proportion of C in mineral associated SOM and bulk soil ∆14C, though, were negligibly dependent on tree species traits, likely reflecting an insensitivity of some SOM pools to decadal scale shifts in ecological factors. Pyrogenic carbon (PyC) derives from incomplete combustion of organic matter and is ubiquitous in terrestrial and aquatic systems. Most PyC is inherently more stable against decomposition than plant residues, and PyC therefore forms an important component of the global carbon (C) cycle. During the Holocene, about 436 Pg organic C accumulated in northern peatlands, and we hypothesize that PyC may contribute substantially to that C stock. We studied 70 samples from 19 intact and degraded European peatland sites and analyzed their PyC content by 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and molecular modeling and peat age and accumulation by radiocarbon dating. Classification of a peatland as either intact or degraded was based on the comparison between apparent and expected long-term C accumulation rates. On average, PyC amounted for 13.5% of soil C across sites, and accounted for up to 50% at single sites. The amount of PyC increased significantly with peat age. Degraded peatlands had lost approximately 56 kg C m2, half of their former C stock. However, degraded peat had higher PyC contents than intact one. Selective enrichment of PyC during both peat build-up and decomposition seems to be an important factor fostering PyC accumulation. Assignment of our results to peatlands of the northern hemisphere, stratified by age, revealed an estimated PyC stock of 62 (±22) Pg. Permafrost-affected soils of the northern circumpolar region represent 50% of the terrestrial soil organic carbon ( SOC) reservoir and are most strongly affected by climatic change. There is growing concern that this vast SOC pool could transition from a net C sink to a source. But so far little is known on how the organic matter ( OM) in permafrost soils will respond in a warming future, which is governed by OM composition and possible stabilization mechanisms. To investigate if and how SOC in the active layer and adjacent permafrost is protected against degradation, we employed density fractionation to separate differently stabilized SOM fractions. We studied the quantity and quality of OM in different compartments using elemental analysis, 13 C solid-phase nuclear magnetic resonance (13 C- NMR) spectroscopy, and 14 C analyses. The soil samples were derived from 16 cores from drained thaw lake basins, ranging from 0 to 5500 years of age, representing a unique series of developing Arctic soils over time. The normalized SOC stocks ranged between 35.5 and 86.2 kg SOC m−3, with the major amount of SOC located in the active layers. The SOC stock is dominated by large amounts of particulate organic matter ( POM), whereas mineral-associated OM especially in older soils is of minor importance on a mass basis. We show that tremendous amounts of over 25 kg OC per square meter are stored as presumably easily degradable OM rich in carbohydrates. Only about 10 kg OC per square meter is present as presumably more stable, mineral-associated OC. Significant amounts of the easily degradable, carbohydrate-rich OM are preserved in the yet permanently frozen soil below the permafrost table. To better understand how carbon and nitrogen mineralization are linked in soils, we conducted a long-term incubation experiment and compared carbon and nitrogen dynamics in the bulk soil and in soil fractions. Topsoil of a Rendzic Leptosol from a beech forest site near Tuttlingen, Germany, was separated into three particle size classes: sand (2000-20 μm), silt (20-2 μm), and clay (<2 μm). Bulk soil and particle size fractions were incubated in replicate, allowing periodic destructive sampling of triplicates at day 0, 14, 42, 84, 140, 210, and 280. We monitored CO2-C respiration, NH3-N emissions, nitrogen mineralization, pool sizes of total and salt extractable (0.01 M CaCl2) organic carbon and nitrogen, and microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen. The chemical composition of selected samples was further characterized by 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Fractionation did not influence carbon mineralization (∑ fractions ≈ bulk soil), which decreased in the order sand > clay > silt. The fractions respired between 10.4% (sand fraction), 8.8% (clay fraction) and 4.4% (silt fraction) of total soil organic carbon. However, nitrogen mineralization was affected by the fractionation procedure (∑ fractions < bulk soil) and followed the order clay > silt > sand. Fractionation increased the surface area and hence provided accessory mineral surfaces, which allowed new binding of especially nitrogen-rich compounds, in addition to ammonium fixation via cation exchange. As indicated by lower metabolic quotients, microbial carbon mineralization was more efficient in the bulk soil compared to the calculated sum of fractions. In the clay fraction, carbon mineralization rates, salt extractable organic carbon contents, and microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen contents declined strongly towards the end of the incubation. This indicates that in the clay fraction, organic carbon was not available for microbial degradation and that microorganisms were strongly carbon-limited causing a subsequent inhibition of nitrogen immobilization. Density fractionation revealed that organic matter in the sand fraction consisted mainly of particulate organic matter present as light material containing partly decomposed plant remnants. The organic matter in the clay fraction was mostly adsorbed on mineral surfaces. Organic matter in the sand and in the clay fraction was dominated by O/N-alkyl C indicating low recalcitrance, but the C/N ratio of organic matter narrowed with decreasing particle size. Our results suggest that carbon and nitrogen mineralization are decoupled in the mineral-associated fractions of the soil. The specific interactions of both carbon and nitrogen containing components with the mineral matrix strongly modulate the mineralization dynamics. Therefore, isolated considerations of C/N or alkyl C to O/N-alkyl C ratios of organic matter are insufficient as indicators for decomposition in plant residues. The combined consideration of C/N and alkyl C to O/N-alkyl C ratios provides a first impression about the degree of decomposition in plant residues. However, bioavailability in fractions where organic matter is mainly stabilized by spatial inaccessibility and by organo-mineral interactions cannot be explained by these ratios, but can be examined by an incubation approach. The physical, chemical, and biological processes forming the backbone of important soil functions (e.g., carbon sequestration, nutrient and contaminant storage, and water transport) take place at reactive interfaces of soil particles and pores. The accessibility of these interfaces is determined by the spatial arrangement of the solid mineral and organic soil components, and the resulting pore system. Despite the development and application of novel imaging techniques operating at the micrometer and even nanometer scale, the microstructure of soils is still considered as a random arrangement of mineral and organic components. Using nanoscale secondary ion mass spectroscopy (NanoSIMS) and a novel digital image processing routine adapted from remote sensing (consisting of image preprocessing, endmember extraction, and a supervised classification), we extensively analyzed the spatial distribution of secondary ions that are characteristic of mineral and organic soil components on the submicrometer scale in an intact soil aggregate (40 measurements, each covering an area of 30 pm x 30 pm with a lateral resolution of 100 nm X 100 nm). We were surprised that the 40 spatially independent measurements clustered in just two complementary types of micrometer-sized domains. Each domain is characterized by a microarchitecture built of a definite mineral assemblage with various organic matter forms and a specific pore system, each fulfilling different functions in soil. Our results demonstrate that these microarchitectures form due to self-organization of the manifold mineral and organic soil components to distinct mineral assemblages, which are in turn stabilized by biophysical feedback mechanisms acting through pore characteristics and microbial accessibility. Soil microbial communities play a crucial role in the accumulation and stabilization of soil organic carbon (SOC) through complex processes involving plant residue transformation and mineral interactions. These processes are influenced by plant inputs and modulated by soil properties that are mostly determined by the parent material. However, our understanding is limited regarding the manner in which vegetation and parent material affect microbial community structure, necromass accumulation, and their subsequent impact on SOC storage. To bridge this knowledge gap, we conducted an in-depth investigation focusing on the top-down influence of vegetation type and the bottom-up effect of parent material on microbial-mediated carbon transformation across soil profiles in a tropical region. Our study encompassed 42 sites on three parent materials (basalt, granite, and marine sediments) and four vegetation types (rubber, banana, areca plantations and uncultivated grassland). Soil samples were collected at 0–20, 20–40, 40–80, and 80–100 cm depth. Microbial community structure and necromass were quantified using microbial biomarkers of phospholipid fatty acids and amino sugars, respectively. In rubber plantations, we observed a trend toward higher microbial biomass that, though not significant when compared to other vegetation types, transformed to a significantly higher accumulation of microbial necromass. This increase in microbial necromass was linked to the accumulation of SOC facilitated by the presence of clay size minerals in clayey soils developed from basalt. In particular, basaltic soils were dominated by bacteria, which facilitated the accumulation of bacterial necromass that significantly bolstered its contribution to SOC. In contrast, in sandier soils developed from granite and marine sediments, fungal communities and necromass dominated due to the propensity of fungi for coarser soil environments. Overall, the main impact of vegetation on microbial communities and necromass accumulation was primarily demonstrated for the topsoil. Differences in soil texture arising from different parent materials exert significant effects on the fungal-to bacterial-biomass and necromass ratios, consequently influencing the contribution of fungal and bacterial necromass carbon to SOC across soil profiles. It is crucial to promote soil carbon sequestration while reducing CO 2 emissions to mitigate climate change. However, the extent of increasing actual soil carbon storage depends on the amount and composition of organic matter input, including its fate during decomposition and soil organic matter (SOM) formation via microbial transformation. With respect to the need to increase carbon sequestration in soil and sustain soil fertility, it is of great interest to better understand how soils with different organic matter content react to amendment with fresh organic matter. Here, we incubated three agricultural soils representing a gradient in C content, adding two different 13C labeled plant residues varying in carbon-to-nitrogen ratio. Carbon mineralization was monitored together with the analysis of the 13CO 2 signatures. After the incubation, 13C compound-specific PLFAs, microbial necromass, and enzyme activities were analyzed. This study demonstrates that the carbon return on investment, thus the amount of retained fresh carbon in relation to the amount of added organic matter, clearly depends on the amount of native soil carbon. Notably, the addition of fresh organic matter to carbon-deficient soils leads to a higher specific CO 2 release compared to soils with high carbon loading, which can be attributed to the differences in the soil microorganisms' response. The CO 2 release of the soil with the lowest C-content was 2.1 and 2.0 mg g−1 soil for treatment with oat and pea litter addition, respectively, whereas for the soil with the highest C-content, CO 2 release was 1.7 mg g−1 soil for oat treatment and 1.6 mg g−1 soil for pea treatment. Thus, higher SOC contents sustain a higher 'return on investment' for the fresh carbon that is amended to soils. With plant litter amendments the microbial community shifted towards a higher fungi-to-bacteria ratio (F/B). This shift in the microbial community was more pronounced (F/B ranging from 0.04 to 0.11) with the addition of oat litter (low quality) compared to pea litter (high quality). Hence, it is important to consider the fate of organic amendments with different N availability when aiming to rebuild soil carbon stocks in degraded soils. Soil management should focus on sustaining soil carbon in balance with current carbon stocks to avoid the vicious circle of soils losing carbon in conjunction with increased greenhouse gas release. The physical protection of carbon (C) within aggregates contributes to the total C storage capability of soils. Changes in land use may have an immense effect especially in the topsoil where most of the disturbances (e.g. organic matter input, soil cultivation, surface temperature) intertwine. In strongly weathered and acidic tropical soils, pedogenic metal oxides and low-activity clay minerals should be the most important determinants of aggregation in addition to organic matter. However, it is unknown how different contents of these oxides and clay minerals affect the storage of organic C in aggregates. Moreover, we do not know whether effects of land use change on aggregate related C storage depend on the content of pedogenic oxides and clay in these tropical soils. To answer these questions, we selected an area located in the East Usambara Mountains, Tanzania, with abundant highly leached, acidic Acrisols. We selected each six sites under natural forest and annual cropping, having a similar plant species composition at each land use. Site selection at each land use was done based on strongly different ratios between the contents of pedogenic Fe oxides and oxide-free clay. The long soil development (East Usambara Mountains formed more than 25 million years ago) under these tropical climate conditions resulted in a similar mineral composition, consisting mainly of hematite, gibbsite, and kaolinite. Topsoil material was sampled (0-5 and 5-10 cm) at three slope positions and subjected to an aggregate fractionation by dry sieving. Bulk soils were analyzed for total element contents as well as contents of pedogenic metal oxides, soil texture (including oxide-free clay), pH, soil organic C, and total N. The obtained five aggregate size fractions (>4000 to <250 µm) were analyzed for their C and N contents. The unique characteristics of our gradient enable us to elucidate the influence of contrasting contents in pedogenic oxides and clay minerals on soil aggregation and the related C storage. Forest topsoils contained significantly more C than topsoils under cropland (4.4 vs. 3.1 kg/m²), whereas C storage under cropland was better related to mineralogical proxies. Therefore, we assume that mineral-organic associations are relatively more important for C storage under croplands, whereas labile particulate C contributes more to C storage in forest topsoils. Using all of our results, we will be able to estimate the impact of human disturbance on soil organic C storage along the gradient of pedogenic metal oxides and clay mineral contents. Despite a large body of studies investigating soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks and potential influencing factors, the impact of contrasting parent material, particularly in the subsoil, has received little attention. To reveal potential effects varying parent materials exert on SOC stocks, we investigated chemical ( 14 C content and overall chemical composition via 13 C NMR spectroscopy) and plant/microbial related parameters (root mass, amino sugars) of bulk soil and soil organic matter fractions from topsoil, subsoil, and rhizosphere soil at three European beech stands ( Fagus sylvatica L.) only differing in parent material (Tertiary sand, Quaternary loess, and Tertiary basalt). The results suggest that the clay fraction, its amount being largely dependent on the respective parent material, took a central role in shaping differences in SOC stocks among the investigated sites by affecting soil organic matter stabilization via organo-mineral association and aggregation. This fraction was particularly relevant in the subsoil, where it accounted for up to 80% of the bulk soil SOC stocks that decreased with decreasing amounts of the clay fraction (basalt > loess > sand site). Determining the soil's nutrient composition, parent material likely also indirectly affected SOC stocks by changing rhizosphere traits (such as fine root density or mortality) and by attracting root growth (and thus organic matter inputs) to subsoil with higher nutrient contents, where in situ root inputs in the form of rhizodeposits were likely the prime source of plant-derived SOC. However, root inputs also contributed in large part to topsoil SOC stocks and were associated with higher abundance of microbial compounds (amino sugars), whose relative importance increased with increasing soil depth. Independent of soil depth and site, amino sugars and the amount of the clay fraction, combined with parameters related to the input of organic matter (root mass and amount of the particulate organic matter fraction) explained more than 90% of the variability in SOC stocks, indicating a key role of these measures in impacting SOC stocks. Because parent material directly or indirectly influenced these parameters, we demonstrate the necessity to consider differences in parent material when estimating and predicting SOC stocks.
