The hegemonic understanding of the green transition will require a massive surge in mineral extraction. We contend that this entails wider, radical shifts in 21st century financialised capitalism. While there has been increasing critical interest in the role of finance capital in development, the links between finance, extraction, and the green transition have been largely overlooked. We fill this gap by arguing that the green transition, understood as a transformation of global capitalism, is marked by new rounds of appropriation, exploitation, and extraction, (re)producing dependencies for resource‐rich Global South countries. These emergent geographies of the green transition are best evaluated through what we call the "finance‐extraction‐transitions nexus". The nexus highlights the interplay between finance capital, mineral extraction, and the material, socio‐economic, and environmental implications of the green transition. This paper focuses on the actors in the new emerging Cold War. In the last century, the world was experiencing a phase of geopolitical rivalry between two major powers, commonly referred to as the Cold War. After surviving fifty years of proxy warfare, sanctions, arms race, and security concerns between the two dominant worldwide factions, the struggle finally came to an end. The USA exerted significant influence over the western bloc, while the Soviet Union dominated the eastern bloc. The global geopolitical scenario has seen substantial transformations in the twenty-first century. The global landscape has shifted towards a multipolar configuration, resulting in conflicts that have highly unorthodox characteristics. China, being a major player, actively engages in world politics and is enjoying a fair share in a market economy and the development of infrastructure. Amid the ongoing global quest for dominance, Europe is experiencing an emergence of new dynamics, each with its unique alliances and ideas. This article aims to analyze the potential for collaboration and conflict between the major players in the emerging global power transition during the early stages of this Cold War. The 21st century in Latin America began with a widespread shift to the left politically, a phenomenon called the 'pink tide'. Following a period of right‐wing re‐ascendancy, left wing governments are again gaining traction across the continent. This article analyses the end of the last pink tide via a dialogue between the post‐extractivism and degrowth literature by examining Bolivia, Ecuador, and Brazil. This is done through a look at the impacts of both economic growth as a normative policy aim and extractivism as the engine to produce this growth on political developments in these countries. In the tradition of Gramsci this is interpreted as a hegemonic force, recast here as growth‐through‐extraction, that serves to perpetuate the interests of wealthy classes despite political changes. This article concludes with a brief analysis of how academic debates and political processes have moved on since Escobar 2015 and what this might mean for the new left‐wing governments of Latin America. Both Karl Polanyi in The Great Transformation and Thomas Piketty in Capital and Ideology make use of the long historical roots of our current high levels of inequality and disappearing safety net, in an effort to understand the ideological basis of, and turmoil within, market societies. Both Polanyi and Piketty decry the erosion of the social institutions that maintained social stability and their replacement by market institutions. What we may call the Normative Representativeness Requirement (NRR) is a necessary condition on any successful objection to a political-economic system that is decentralized and profit-oriented. This article applies the NRR to what I call "The Radical Critique" of the profit system. I argue that this critique, which is not only historically important (as reported by Marx (Capital: a critique of political economy, C.H. Kerr and Company, Chicago, 1867)) but also continues to circulate (e.g., as reported by Cohen (Why not socialism?, Princeton University Press, Princeton, 2009), as reported by Piketty (Capital in the twenty-first century, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA, 2014)), does not meet the NRR. The Radical Critique of diverse forms of the profit system (e.g., laissez-faire or a welfare-state) suffers from a fatal flaw that renders its logical force at best undiscernible. The history of commercial aviation - from the earliest attempts at flight to the modern civil aircraft - is used to illustrate the central role of the evolutionary progress of collective knowledge in what is loosely described as technical progress. No individual knows how to build an airbus - ten thousand people working together do. The emphasis on collective intelligence as a means of solving problems builds on Penrose's insight that the firm is best viewed a s a collection of capabilities to develop a template for the modern corporation that recognises the development of 'capital as a service' and the importance of 'hollow corporations', franchises and platforms in the twenty-first century economy. Do digital technologies of early 21st century capitalism promote or reduce consumer sovereignty? This chapter addresses this question by examining John Kenneth Galbraith's critique of consumer sovereignty during the post-war period of industrial society and looks at the insights he provides to understand the impact of platform capitalism on consumer sovereignty today. This chapter has the following sections: (1) I review the main postulates of Galbraith's theory; (2) I highlight the main differences between traditional advertising and online behavioral advertising; (3) I explain how online behavioral advertisement strengthens Galbraith's dependence effect and revised sequence theories; (4) I then discuss normative challenges raised by digital platform corporations to individual sovereignty; and (5) finally, I argue that platform capitalism is a mature form of Galbraith's "new industrial state." Critical scholarship on twenty-first century capitalist development has called attention to certain structural limits on employment growth. Large populations excluded from formal employment are seen to eke out a precarious subsistence in informal economies, seemingly "surplus" to the needs of capital. This article, by contrast, aims to recast labor in the "peripheries," not as an externalized quantity redundant to emerging economic formations, but rather as integral if often hidden features of capitalist value extraction. Rethinking, in this way, "surplus populations," we argue for particular attention to the heterogeneity of contemporary capitalist labor arrangements and to associated patterns of ideological devaluation, which underpin capitalist markets in the South and East as well as in peripheralized spaces in the North and West. The book "Troublemaking: Why You Should Organize Your Workplace" by Lydia Hughes and Jamie Woodcock explores the recent surge in worker unionization drives and strike activity in the US. Advanced education is often thought to respond to the demands of the economy, market forces create new occupations, and then universities respond with new degrees and curricula aimed at training future workers with specific new skills. Presented here is comparative research on an underappreciated, yet growing, concurrent alternative process: universities, with their global growth in numbers and enrollments, in concert with expanding research capacity, create and privilege knowledge and skills, legitimate new degrees that then become monetized and even required in private and public sectors of economies. A process referred to as academization of occupations has far-reaching implications for understanding the transformation of capitalism, new dimensions of social inequality, and resulting stratification among occupations. Academization is also eclipsing the more limited professionalization processes in occupations. Additionally, it fuels further expansion of advanced education and contributes to a new culture of work in the 21st century. Commissioned detailed German and US case studies of the university origins and influence on workplace consequences of seven selected occupations and associated knowledge, skills, and degrees investigate the academization process. And to demonstrate how universal this could become, the cases contrast the more open and less-restrictive education and occupation system in the US with the centralized and state-controlled education system in Germany. With expected variation, both economies and their occupational systems show evidence of robust academization. Existing studies have scrutinized the rise of states as global owners and investors, yet we still lack a good understanding of what state investment does in a globalized economy, especially in host states. Comparative capitalisms research has analyzed foreign state investment as a potential source of patient capital for coordinated and mixed-market economies. However, this patient capital framework cannot explain the recent surge of protectionist sentiments, even among the "good hosts" of state-led investment. Therefore, we go beyond the patient capital argument and develop a novel framework centered on the globalized nature of foreign state investment. We create and empirically illustrate a novel typology based on different modes of cross-border state investment—from financial to strategic—and different categories of host states. Bestselling fiction is an interesting and controversial phenomenon which attracts the attention of a wide range of academic circles from many areas such as socio-economic study, cultural study and literary study in nearly one hundred years. It has been studied firstly in English speaking countries where it was born, then extended to many other countries in Europe, America, Asia, and Pacific Islands. In Viet Nam, due to the newly formed market economy in postwar period, this phenomenon has just sprouted in Doi Moi literature. According to our investigation, there has not any theoretical and systematical research on this object in Viet Nam except for some short papers, not to mention applied studies. It is a gap need filling as soon as possible. Capitalism in the 21st century has been expanded globally through production, and above all, through consumption, digitization, and the proliferation of companies and organizations; analyzing these trends is essential to understand organizational specificities in national and regional contexts. To comprehend this expansion and its specific characteristics, this paper presents the conceptual proposal of the Capitalist Seduction Mode. The paper is organized into three sections: 1) an analysis of the processes of "hooking" or engagement of platform capitalism through networks of companies and organizations; 2) a reflection on the overflow of the managerial system into society; 3) the conceptualization of the smartphone as an expression of Googlism and as a device of social domination. Kate Raworth's celebrated book, Doughnut Economics: Seven ways to think like a 21st century economist, calls for a reconciliation of our design principles for society and the economy with the rhythms and tolerances of ecological systems. It will demand something akin to a new axial revolution that will have to be experienced as much in the body and in the intimacies of a renewed care and appreciation for our relational and ecological selves as in the collective re-design of our societies, democratic decision-making and collective provisioning. The argument that capitalism is, contrary to the narrative of mainstream economics, bad for human health goes back to the work of Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx. By the end of the twentieth century and beginning of the twenty-first century the evolution of capitalism in terms of the rise of neoliberalism first and later monopoly and financialization has undermined the foundations of human health. The "vectors" through which this has occurred include inequality and poverty, production, marketing, and the consumption of harmful products such as ultra-processed foods, alcohol, and tobacco use, and the primacy of growth with its connections to pollution, climate change and poor and dangerous working conditions. We face a physical health crisis associated with increasing incidence of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer and a mental health crisis associated with increasing incidence of depression and anxiety. The massive loss of life from the COVID-19 pandemic laid bare how the foundations for health have been eroded over time. In this article we explore the connections between key features of capitalism and worsening health outcomes in the United States. We then identify key policy and institutional changes that would be necessary if we are to reverse these trends. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Claims about 'the commodification of everything' are a staple of 21st century left (and some liberal) analysis and critique. These claims, however, are asserted much more often than they are backed up, and little attention has been devoted to thinking through how they might be substantiated or to what 'the commodification of everything' actually means. This paper contributes to contemporary debates over capitalism, commodification and politics by suggesting ways that commodification-of-everything arguments can be better specified and evaluated. It identifies four variants of commodification-of-everything claims; reviews and critiques the literature's uses of the terms 'commodity', 'everything' and 'thing'; and articulates three possible definitions of 'the commodification of everything' that raise additional questions about defining 'sale' and 'market' and the implications of thinking of things as commodities. The conclusion suggests reframings of the relationship between capitalism and commodification that seek to preserve the force of commodification-of-everything claims while avoiding their pitfalls. In the first quarter of the twenty-first century, much future-making in Kenya is taking place in ruins of unfinished promising projects, failed capitalist enterprises, and decades of colonial and postcolonial exclusion and marginalization. When discussing future-making in Kenya specifically and Africa more generally, especially in the context of vision-driven developmentalist narratives that rely on visions of linear progress and growth, analysts and social scientists need to account for ways that futures emerge from ruins and rubble of undelivered and uncertain promises, collapsed industries, and colonial and postcolonial dispossession of land and rights. This article establishes the overarching argumentation and framing of the "Living with Ruins" special collection, outlines key theoretical concepts like ruination, infrastructuring, and future-making, and examines ruins and ruination in key economic and political domains that make claims to Kenya's future: capitalist boom-and-bust economies, mega-scale infrastructure projects, and urban development. In all these domains, futures are emerging through assemblages of people's everyday practices of maintenance and the ruins that surround them, complicating facile proclamations of Africa's rising or abjection. The standpoint of this article is that Latin America - a space with huge contrasts, contradictions, structural heterogeneities plus a combination of both backward and modern forms - has always been a privileged locus for scientific and political pronouncements, and for creating an original, exhaustive field of reflection and an innovative method of historicalstructural research. It therefore constitutes a unique world space for exposing specific problems and for a theoretical formulation of the contradictory relationships of development and underdevelopment, center and periphery and structural dependence. Thus, based on this differentiated place, it seeks to discuss the systemic movements on a world scale during the twenty-first century and the impacts they have had on the continent. Some of the main contours are presented in order to construct a collective agenda of reflections on dependent development and space, inspired by the potent critical thinking, which has been developed on this continent and which, it is argued, should be re-established and restored vis-á-vis the structural and conjunctural movements of contemporary capitalism. Emphasis is given to some of the trends of geopolitical and geoeconomic change, currently underway in world capitalism, in order to promote a reflection regarding the specificities of the disputes for the social production of space in Latin America. One of the central problems in leftist thought in the twenty-first century has been the ability to unite its various parts in order to develop some form of wider convergence capable of challenging the post-cold war neoliberal capitalist order. Despite numerous rich critiques of the workings of neoliberal capitalism, political strategy has all too often been recued to a renewal of a dated twentieth-century statist project on the one hand and an ambiguous process of civil contestation on the other. This article builds on recent calls for convergence on the left, particularly between the grand traditions of Marxism and Anarchism, which have seen an unparalleled renaissance in innovative development in the last thirty years. It suggests that an open-ended framework of Gramsci’s ‘war of position’ provides an avenue for this convergence to build forms of political strategy. Whilst Gramscian hegemony has often been understood as one of the problematic concepts within leftist though and indeed one that has often led to divergence, it suggests that inclusive version of the term as applied by Stuart Hall and Raymond Williams remains one in which convergence can develop and thrive. This article analyses relations between the drag community and the creative industries sector in Belgrade over the first two decades of the 21st century. It argues that drag queens and kings, together with the rest of the LGBTIQ+ community, gain visibility through the creative industries, and that they are subjectified through the immaterial labor involved in the processes of market neoliberalization and city gentrification. The visibility of drag appears to depend not exclusively on social liberalization but on complex intersections of material-semiotic flows, the most important of which, in this analysis, appears to be the push toward a neoliberal market economy and the consequent entrepreneurship of the self through precarious creative, affective, and cognitive labor. This essay reviews Deaths of Despair and the Future of Capitalism (hereafter, DEATHS) by Anne Case and Angus Deaton, a fascinating account of life and death in the United States during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. While primarily targeted toward a popular audience, the volume will be of interest to many economists and other social scientists. It postulates how American capitalism run amok—combined with and partially causing the declining economic circumstances of the less educated—has increased mortality from drugs, suicide, and chronic liver disease. After describing the material in DEATHS in considerable detail, I suggest a variety of research questions that need to be answered to confirm or refute Case and Deaton's arguments and describe challenges to their key hypotheses. Among the latter are the ability of the postulated relationships to explain the sharply differing mortality trajectories of non-Hispanic Whites, compared with other groups, and the timing of the observed mortality changes. Although Fidesz prides itself on breaking with liberalism, and in the realm of political institutions the break is indeed fundamental, the new regime's socio-economic policies have radicalised certain neoliberal tendencies (332) At the beginning of the twenties there's nothing special about states rolling back liberal safeguards and freedoms. Accordingly, Scheiring's claim that "[t]he accumulative state replaced the competition state" (277) might also be too strong, as key economic policies of the accumulative state have not replaced but radicalized those of the pre-existing competition state. The result is a wide-ranging analysis, focusing on domestic and foreign economic actors shaping government policy, and offers an empirically rich and conceptually persuasive account of how and why domestic capital factions lost out under post-socialist neoliberalism, and how Orbán's Fidesz party aimed to alleviate this. Alienation is among the most influential terms in Marxist theory, but also one of the most ambiguous and controversial. Unlike previous literature, which has tended to focus on Marx' early philosophical writings, this offers a novel reinterpretation of the theory of alienation found in Marx's later works. Rather than conceiving alienation as a subjective experience or an inherent feature of social organization, I contend that alienation in the Marxist sense can be understood as an objective process arising from the appropriation of the results of production and their transformation into capital. This interpretation resolves the main theoretical problems conventionally associated with alienation theory, for example the tendency towards essentialism and moral paternalism. In particular, a Marxist theory of alienation explains the paradox of social power and isolation that characterizes contemporary capitalist societies, in which feelings of powerlessness and loneliness are intensified despite objective increases in humanity's social power and interdependence. This article explores the satire in Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah's Friday Black (2018), specifically focusing on the use of speculative devices to question assumptions about racial progress in the twenty-first century United States. Adjei-Brenyah's humor unsettles the logic of postracial time and demonstrates how contemporary African American satire disrupts race-neutral discourses that reproduce what Maria Bose calls "postracial capitalism." Drawing on recent scholarship by Bose, Danielle Fuentes Morgan, Lisa Guerrero, and others, I read Adjei-Brenyah's dark and hilarious short stories as satires that name and challenge the emerging technologies of racist domination that condemn Black bodies to premature death in contemporary America. Isaac Asimov’s Foundation and Frank Herbert’s Dune were considered to be “unadaptable” works. This paper critically discusses Villeneuve’s Dune and the TV series created by AppleTV+, a revision of the “Foundation”, overviewing the controversies surrounding the recreation and transformation of these “grand narratives”. The author considers that these transmutations are relevant not only for their storytelling alterations, but also for the transformations of “cinematic capitalism”. Proposing as a working concept the notion of chimeric capitalist cinema, the paper also brings into the debate other productions that disclose ideological mutations, like Rings of Power and House of the Dragon, considering how contemporary cinematic modes of production are changing. Seafood production and trade have expanded dramatically over the last 40 years and comprise one of the fastest growing, and most environmentally impactful, sub‐sectors of the global food system. While richer nations have increased their seafood consumption and displaced their environmental load, the marine environmental impact of fishery production has largely shifted to the waters of less‐affluent nations. To sustain fishing economies and seafood security, in an era of increasing marine ecological precarity constitutes a major challenge for development and human well‐being in the 21st century. Blue growth perspectives emphasize the transformative power of growth‐oriented development. Such perspectives conflict with critical political economic theories of environment and food systems; notably, the treadmill of production and world food system scholarship. Using annual data from the Global Footprint Network, World Bank, UN FAO, and International Monetary Fund, this study applies methods in cross‐national, panel regression analysis in order to ultimately pose some important challenges to modernist blue growth perspectives. The analysis suggests that economic growth and incorporation into the world market economy have led to unsustainable and inequitable outcomes regarding the marine ecological impact of fisheries. This article situates the current (re)configuration of Latin American regionalism within the broader history of capitalist geopolitics. I argue that modern regionalism, in the post-war period and beyond, is better understood through a deeper historicization of geopolitical dynamics that shaped, and were shaped by, global capital accumulation. From the early regional imaginaries of post-independence Latin American leaders, to the emergence of 'continental history' marked by the rise of the continent-sized island in the United States, the origins of regional institutions forms a more longer lineage than is often thought. The article provides a class-relational analysis of the ISI period, the rise (and fall) of neoliberal discipline, and the resurgence of a new Latin American left in the early twenty-first century. Through the lens of capitalist geopolitics, I offer a potential critical-theory route towards understanding the current conjuncture, and what the future portents for Latin American regionalism.
