We have developed a straightforward, one-pot, low-temperature hydrothermal method to transform oyster shell waste particles (bCCP) from the species Crassostrea gigas (Mg-calcite, 5 wt% Mg) into hydroxyapatite (HA) micro/nanoparticles. The influence of the P reagents (H 3 PO 4 , KH 2 PO 4 , and K 2 HPO 4 ), P/bCCP molar ratios (0.24, 0.6, and 0.96), digestion temperatures (25-200 °C), and digestion times (1 week-2 months) on the transformation process was thoroughly investigated. At 1 week, the minimum temperature to yield the full transformation significantly reduced from 160 °C to 120 °C when using K 2 HPO 4 instead of KH 2 PO 4 at a P/bCCP ratio of 0.6, and even to 80 °C at a P/bCCP ratio of 0.96. The transformation took place via a dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism driven by the favorable balance between HA precipitation and bCCP dissolution, due to the lower solubility product of HA than that of calcite at any of the tested temperatures. Both the bCCP and the derived HA particles were cytocompatible for MG-63 human osteosarcoma cells and m17.ASC murine mesenchymal stem cells, and additionally, they promoted the osteogenic differentiation of m17.ASC, especially the HA particles. Because of their physicochemical features and biological compatibility, both particles could be useful osteoinductive platforms for translational applications in bone tissue engineering.

Using X-ray scattering, we measured detailed maps of the diffuse scattering intensity distribution and a number of phonon dispersion branches for a single crystal of inorganically formed natural calcite and for high-quality mesocrystals of biogenic calcite from a Mediterranean sea urchin spine. A comparison shows that the known differences in the mechanical properties between the `strong' biogenic and `brittle' abiotic material should be attributed to the mesoscopic architecture of the crystal rather than to a modification of the calcite crystal structure. The data are rationalized by comparing them to the results of ab initio model calculations of lattice dynamics. For the mesocrystal, they are augmented by the evaluation of the faceting of the constituent nanocrystals.

Photochemical activation is proposed as a general method for controlling the crystallization of sparingly soluble carbonates in space and time. The photogeneration of carbonate in an alkaline environment is achieved upon photo-decarboxylation of an organic precursor by using a conventional 365 nm UV LED. Local irradiation was conducted focusing the LED light on a 300 μm radius spot on a closed glass crystallization cell. The precursor solution was optimized to avoid the precipitation of the photoreaction organic byproducts and prevent photo-induced pH changes to achieve the formation of calcium carbonate only in the corresponding irradiated area. The crystallization was monitored in real-time by time-lapse imaging. The method is also shown to work in gels. Similarly, it was also shown to photo-activate locally the formation of barium carbonate biomorphs. Biomineralization occurs in aqueous environments. Despite the ubiquity and relevance of CaCO 3 biomineralization, the role of water in the biomineralization process has remained elusive. Here, we demonstrate that water reorganization accompanies CaCO 3 biomineralization for sea urchin spine generation in a model system. Using surface-specific vibrational spectroscopy, we probe the water at the interface of the spine-associated protein during CaCO 3 mineralization. Our results show that, while the protein structure remains unchanged, the structure of interfacial water is perturbed differently in the presence of both Ca 2+ and CO 3 2- compared to the addition of only Ca 2+ . This difference is attributed to the condensation of prenucleation mineral species. Our findings are consistent with a nonclassical mineralization pathway for sea urchin spine generation and highlight the importance of protein hydration in biomineralization.

Gastroliths are highly calcified structures formed in the cardiac stomach wall of crustaceans for the temporary storage of amorphous CaCO 3 (ACC). The gastrolithic ACC is stabilized by the presence of biomolecules, and represents a novel model for research into biomineralization. For the first time, an in vitro biomimetic retrosynthesis of scaffolds of gastrolithic matrices with CaCO 3 is presented. With the help of synthetic polyacrylic (PAA) and phytic (PA) acids, amorphous precursor particles were stabilized in double (DD) and gas (GD) diffusion crystallization assays. The presence of these synthetic molecules as efficient inhibitors of nucleation and growth of CaCO 3 , and the use of biological gastrolith scaffolds as confined reaction environments determined the kinetics of crystallization, and controlled the morphogenesis of CaCO 3 . The mollusk shell is a complex biological material that integrates mineral phases with organic macromolecular components such as proteins. The role of proteins in the formation of the nacre layer (aragonite mineral phase) is poorly understood, particularly with regard to the organization of mineral deposits within the protein extracellular matrix and the identification of which proteins are responsible for this task. We report new experiments that provide insight into the role of the framework nacre protein, n16.3 (Pinctada fucata), as an organizer or assembler of calcium carbonate mineral clusters. Using a combination of biophysical techniques, we find that recombinant n16.3 (r-n16.3) oligomerizes to form amorphous protein films and particles that possess regions of disorder and mobility. These supramolecular assemblies possess an intrinsically disordered C-terminal region (T64-W98) and reorganize in the presence of Ca(2+) ions to form clustered protein oligomers. This Ca(2+)-induced reorganization leads to alterations in the molecular environments of Trp residues, the majority of which reside in putative aggregation-prone cross-β strand regions. Potentiometric Ca(2+) titrations reveal that r-n16.3 does not significantly affect the formation of prenucleation clusters in solution, and this suggests a role for this protein in postnucleation mineralization events. This is verified in subsequent in vitro mineralization assays in which r-n16.3 demonstrates its ability to form gel-like protein phases that organize and cluster nanometer-sized single-crystal calcite relative to protein-deficient controls. We conclude that the n16 nacre framework proteome creates a protein gel matrix that organizes and dimensionally limits mineral deposits. This process is highly relevant to the formation of ordered, nanometer-sized nacre tablets in the mollusk shell.

Crystallisation is at the heart of various scientific disciplines, but still the understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying phase separation and the formation of the first solid particles in aqueous solution is rather limited. In this review, classical nucleation theory, as well as established concepts of spinodal decomposition and liquid-liquid demixing, is introduced together with a description of the recently proposed pre-nucleation cluster pathway. The features of pre-nucleation clusters are presented and discussed in relation to recent modifications of the classical and established models for phase separation, together with a review of experimental work and computer simulations on the characteristics of pre-nucleation clusters of calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, iron(oxy)(hydr)oxide, silica, and also amino acids as an example of small organic molecules. The role of pre-nucleation clusters as solute precursors in the emergence of a new phase is summarized, and the link between the chemical speciation of homogeneous solutions and the process of phase separation via pre-nucleation clusters is highlighted.

Stable monodispersed amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) nanoparticles can be synthesized in ethanol media by a facile method, and crystallization of ACC is kinetically controlled, resulting in the formation of three polymorphs in a mixed solvent of ethanol-water at different pH values.

The larval spicule matrix protein SM50 is the most abundant occluded matrix protein present in the mineralized larval sea urchin spicule. Recent evidence implicates SM50 in the stabilization of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC). Here, we investigate the molecular interactions of SM50 and CaCO3 by investigating the function of three major domains of SM50 as small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) fusion proteins - a C-type lectin domain (CTL), a glycine rich region (GRR) and a proline rich region (PRR). Under various mineralization conditions, we find that SUMO-CTL is monomeric and influences CaCO3 mineralization, SUMO-GRR aggregates into large protein superstructures and SUMO-PRR modifies the early CaCO3 mineralization stages as well as growth. The combination of these mineralization and self-assembly properties of the major domains synergistically enable the full-length SM50 to fulfill functions of constructing the organic spicule matrix as well as performing necessary mineralization activities such as Ca(2+) ion recruitment and organization to allow for proper growth and development of the mineralized larval sea urchin spicule., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. Polymers are important additives for the control of mineralization reactions in both biological and bioinspired mineralization. The reason is that they allow for a number of interactions with the growing crystals and even amorphous minerals. These can substantially influence the way the mineral grows on several levels. Already in the prenucleation phase, polymers can control the formation of prenucleation clusters and subsequently the nucleation event. Also, polymers can control whether the further crystallization follows a classical or nonclassical particle-mediated growth path. In this chapter, the main ways in which polymers can be used to control a crystallization reaction will be highlighted. In addition, polymers that are useful for this purpose and the experimental conditions suitable for directing a crystallization reaction into the desired direction through the use of polymers will be described., (© 2013 Elsevier Inc. Despite the importance of crystallization for various areas of research, our understanding of the early stages of the mineral precipitation from solution and of the actual mechanism of nucleation is still rather limited. Indeed, detailed insights into the processes underlying nucleation may enable a systematic development of novel strategies for controlling mineralization, which is highly relevant for fields ranging from materials chemistry to medicine. In this work, we describe experimental aspects of a quantitative assay, which relies on pH titrations combined with in situ metal ion potentiometry and conductivity measurements. The assay has originally been designed to study the crystallization of calcium carbonate, one of the most abundant biominerals. However, the developed procedures can also be readily applied to any compound containing cations for which ion-selective electrodes are available. Besides the possibility to quantitatively assess ion association prior to nucleation and to directly determine thermodynamic solubility products of precipitated phases, the main advantage of the crystallization assay is the unambiguous identification of the different stages of precipitation (i.e., prenucleation, nucleation, and early postnucleation) and the characterization of the multiple effects of additives. Furthermore, the experiments permit targeted access to distinct precursor species and intermediate stages, which thus can be analyzed by additional methods such as cryo-electron microscopy or analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC). Regarding ion association in solution, AUC detects entities significantly larger than simple ion pairs, so-called prenucleation clusters. Biological materials are often based on simple constituents and grown by the principle of self-assembly under ambient conditions. In particular, biomineralization approaches exploit efficient pathways of inorganic material synthesis. There is still a large gap between the complexity of natural systems and the practical utilization of bioinspired formation mechanisms. Here we describe a simple self-assembly route leading to a CaCO(3) microlens array, somewhat reminiscent of the brittlestars' microlenses, with uniform size and focal length, by using a minimum number of components and equipment at ambient conditions. The formation mechanism of the amorphous CaCO(3) microlens arrays was elucidated by confocal Raman spectroscopic imaging to be a two-step growth process mediated by the organic surfactant. CaCO(3) microlens arrays are easy to fabricate, biocompatible and functional in amorphous or more stable crystalline forms. This shows that advanced optical materials can be generated by a simple mineral precipitation.

A titration set-up coupling ion selective electrodes with pH adjustment was used to analyze the effects of additives present during precipitation of calcium carbonate. Besides industrially well-established antiscalants (sodium triphosphate, citrate, polyacrylate and poly(aspartic acid)), also functional polymers being active in morphosynthesis (polystyrene sulfonate and poly(styrene-alt-maleic acid)) were analyzed. Interestingly each additive acts in its specific way, suggesting the notation "fingerprinting" for a complex interplay of up to five "solution modes" of influencing CaCO(3) precipitation and crystallisation. The results provide new insights into the modes of additive controlled crystallisation, and in the long run, the insights may facilitate the design of precipitation systems that yield complex and tailor-made crystals.

Calcium carbonate forms scales, geological deposits, biominerals, and ocean sediments. Huge amounts of carbon dioxide are retained as carbonate ions, and calcium ions represent a major contribution to water hardness. Despite its relevance, little is known about the precipitation mechanism of calcium carbonate, and specified complex crystal structures challenge the classical view on nucleation considering the formation of metastable ion clusters. We demonstrate that dissolved calcium carbonate in fact contains stable prenucleation ion clusters forming even in undersaturated solution. The cluster formation can be characterized by means of equilibrium thermodynamics, applying a multiple-binding model, which allows for structural preformation. Stable clusters are the relevant species in calcium carbonate nucleation. Such mechanisms may also be important for the crystallization of other minerals.

Conducting polymers are interesting materials of technological applications, while the use of polymers as additives controlling crystal nucleation and growth is a fast growing research field. In the present article, we make a first step in combining both topics and report the effect of conducting polymer derivatives, which are based on carboxylated polyanilines (c-PANIs), on in vitro CaCO3 crystallization by the Kitano and gas diffusion method. This is the first example of the mineralization control of CaCO3 by a rigid carboxylated polymer. Both the concentration of c-PANI and the presence of carboxylate groups have a strong influence on the CaCO3 crystallization behavior and crystal morphology. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows crystalline calcite particles confirmed by FTIR spectra. pH and Ca2+ measurements during CaCO3 crystallization utilizing the Kitano and a constant-pH approach show a defined nucleation period of CaCO3 particles. The measurements allow for the calculation of the supersaturation time development, and the kinetic data can be combined with time-dependent light microscopy. The presence of c-PANIs delays the time of nucleation indicative of calcite nucleation inhibition. Microscopy illustrates the morphologies of CaCO3 crystals at all crystallization stages, from homogeneous spherical amorphous CaCO3 (ACC) particles corresponding to the first steps of crystallization to transition stage calcite crystals also involving a dissolution-recrystallization process in a late stage of crystallization. The data show that it is not possible to conclude the crystallization mechanism even for a very simple additive controlled crystallization process without time-resolved microscopic data supplemented by the analysis of the species present in the solution. Finally, fluorescence analysis indicates that conducting polymer derivatives can be incorporated into precipitated calcite particles. This gives rise to CaCO3 particles with novel and interesting optical properties.

The interaction between poly(L-glutamic acid) (PLE) and calcite crystals was studied with AFM-based single molecule force spectroscopy. Block copolymers of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and PLE were synthesized and covalently attached to the tip of an AFM cantilever. In desorption measurements the molecules were allowed to adsorb on the calcite crystal faces and afterward successively desorbed. The corresponding desorption forces were detected with high precision, showing for example a force transition between the two blocks. Because of its importance in the crystallization process in biominerals, the PLE-calcite interaction was investigated as a function of the pH as well as the calcium concentration of the aqueous solution. The sensitivity of the technique was underlined by resolving different interaction forces for calcite (104) and calcite (100).

Two double-hydrophilic block copolymers, each comprising a nonionic block and an anionic block comprising pendent aromatic sulfonate groups, were used as additives to modify the crystallization of CaCO3. Marked morphological changes in the CaCO3 particles were observed depending on the reaction conditions used. A poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) diblock copolymer was particularly versatile in effecting a morphological change in calcite particles, and a continuous structural transition in the product particles from polycrystalline to mesocrystal to single crystal was observed with variation in the calcium concentration. The existence of this structural sequence provides unique insight into the mechanism of polymer-mediated crystallization. We propose that it reflects continuity in the crystallization mechanism itself, spanning the limits from nonoriented aggregation of nanoparticles to classical ion-by-ion growth. The various pathways to polycrystalline, mesocrystal, and single-crystal particles, which had previously been considered to be distinct, therefore all form part of a unifying crystallization framework based on the aggregation of precursor subunits.

We reveal that the aragonite CaCO3 platelets in nacre of Haliotis laevigata are covered with a continuous layer of disordered amorphous CaCO3 and that there is no protein interaction with this layer. This finding contradicts classical paradigms of biomineralization, e.g., an epitaxial match between the structural organic matrix and the formed mineral. This finding also highlights the role of physicochemical effects in morphogenesis, complementing the previously assumed total control by biomolecules and bioprocesses, with many implications in nanotechnology and materials science.

Nanolimes have been commercially available for over a decade as a remineralization agent for natural stone to combat deterioration. While they have been applied successfully and studied extensively, their penetration abilities in different materials have not yet been readily quantifiable in situ and in real time. Using two transparent pore-imitating test systems (acrylic glass (PMMA) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)) and light microscopy, the penetration coefficients (PCs) of two nanolimes (CaLoSiL (CLS) and Nanorestore Plus (NRP)), as well as their solvents, were determined experimentally in square channels of about 100 µm diameter. Their PCs and those for a previously published glass–resin-based test system were also predicted based on measurable material parameters or literature values using the Lucas–Washburn equation. Additionally, a liquid mineral precursor (LMP) of calcium carbonate based on complex coacervation (CC) was investigated as an alternative to the solid particle dispersions of nanolime. In general, the dispersions behaved like their pure solvents. Overall, trends could be reasonably well predicted with both literature and experimentally determined properties using the Lucas–Washburn equation. In absolute terms, the prediction of observed infiltration behavior was satisfactory for alcohols and nanolimes but deviated substantially for water and the aqueous LMP. The commercially available PMMA chips and newly designed PDMS devices were mostly superior to the previously published glass–resin-based test system, except for the long-term monitoring of material deposition. Lastly, the transfer of results from these investigated systems to a different, nontransparent mineral, calcite, yielded similar PC values independently of the original data when used as the basis for the conversion (all PC types and all material/liquid combinations except aqueous solutions in PDMS devices). This knowledge can be used to improve the targeted design of tailor-made remineralization treatments for different application cases by guiding solvent choice, and to reduce destructive sampling by providing a micromodel for pretesting, if transferability to real stone samples proves demonstrable in the future. Amorphous calcium carbonate plays a key role as transient precursor in the early stages of biogenic calcium carbonate formation in nature. However, due to its instability in aqueous solution, there is still rare success to utilize amorphous calcium carbonate in biomedicine. Here, we report the mutual effect between paramagnetic gadolinium ions and amorphous calcium carbonate, resulting in ultrafine paramagnetic amorphous carbonate nanoclusters in the presence of both gadolinium occluded highly hydrated carbonate-like environment and poly(acrylic acid). Gadolinium is confirmed to enhance the water content in amorphous calcium carbonate, and the high water content of amorphous carbonate nanoclusters contributes to the much enhanced magnetic resonance imaging contrast efficiency compared with commercially available gadolinium-based contrast agents. Furthermore, the enhanced T1 weighted magnetic resonance imaging performance and biocompatibility of amorphous carbonate nanoclusters are further evaluated in various animals including rat, rabbit and beagle dog, in combination with promising safety in vivo. Overall, exceptionally facile mass-productive amorphous carbonate nanoclusters exhibit superb imaging performance and impressive stability, which provides a promising strategy to design magnetic resonance contrast agent. Sensitive, biocompatible and stable contrast agents for MRI are in demand. Here, the authors combine gadolinium ions with amorphous calcium carbonate to make stable paramagnetic amorphous carbonate nanoclusters with high MRI contrast and significantly improved biocompatibility over commercial gadolinium-based agents. Biomaterials such as seashells are intriguing due to their remarkable properties, including their hierarchical structure from the nanometer to the micro- or even macroscopic scale. Transferring this nanostructure to generate nanostructured polymers can improve their electrical conductivity. Here, we present the synthesis of polypyrrole using waste seashell powder as a template to prepare a polypyrrole/CaCO3 composite material. Various synthesis parameters were optimized to produce a composite material with an electrical conductivity of 2.1 × 10−4 ± 3.2 × 10−5 S/cm. This work presents the transformation of waste seashells into sustainable, electronically conductive materials and their application as an antistatic agent in polymers. The effect of Mg2+ on the precipitation pathway of CaCO3 in absolute ethanol has been studied to investigate the role of ion solvation in the crystallization process. Our data reveal that high concentrations of Mg2+ promote the precipitation of an amorphous transient phase together with non-stoichometric hydrated phases of calcium carbonate. The role of the double-hydrophilic block copolymer poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(methacrylic acid) (PEG-b-PMAA) on the morphogenesis of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) was studied by applying the contrast variation small angle neutron scattering technique. The morphology and size of CaCO3 crystals is strongly affected by the addition of PEG-b-PMAA. In order to determine the partial scattering functions of the polymer and CaCO3 mineral, we developed both an experimental and theoretical approach with a sophisticated method of their determination from the scattering intensity. Partial scattering functions give detailed information for each component. In particular, the partial scattering function of the polymer, Spp, shows a monotonic slope with Q ² to ³ where the scattering vector Q is low (Q<0.01 Å ¹), which is a clear evidence that the polymer within the CaCO3 mineral has a mass fractal dimension. In this work, an aqueous calcium carbonate precursor solution capable of grouting loose quartz sand is developed and tested for the cementation of an Ottawa fine sand sample. Poly(acrylic acid) is used as a stabilizer of the CaCO3 liquid precursor phase resulting in homogenous droplets of the mineral precursor. Afterwards, this precursor phase was applied on quartz sand grains leading to calcium carbonate mineralization primarily on the surface of the grains. Within several days, a continuous CaCO3 coating of the sand grains was achieved (thickness of ∼50 μm), cementing the grains together forming a bulk material. This resulting composite material of CaCO3 cemented quartz sand is analogous to sandstone, which shows cohesion and enhanced strength with respect to untreated soil sand samples. The experimental procedures by which the required coating thickness forms have been thoroughly investigated and re-engineered in order to lay a foundation for an industrially applicable method in terms of upscaling and on-site construction. Investigations of the underlying mineralization process of this method strongly suggest a polymer induced liquid precursor (PILP) process followed by a non-classical crystallization pathway. The investigation of mineralization and demineralization processes is important for the understanding of many phenomena in daily life. Many crystalline materials are exposed to decay processes, resulting in lesions, cracks, and cavities. Historical artifacts, for example, often composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), are damaged by exposure to acid rain or temperature cycles. Another example for lesions in a crystalline material is dental caries, which lead to the loss of dental hard tissue, mainly composed of hydroxyapatite (HAp). The filling of such cavities and lesions, to avoid further mineral loss and enable or support the remineralization, is a major effort in both areas. Nevertheless, the investigation of the filling process of these materials into the cavities is difficult due to the non-transparency and crystallinity of the concerned materials. In order to address this problem, we present a transparent, inexpensive, and reusable test system for the investigation of infiltration and crystallization processes in situ, being able to deliver datasets that could potentially be used for quantitative evaluation of the infiltration process. This was achieved using a UV-lithography-based micro-comb test system (MCTS), combined with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) to mimic the surface tension/wettability of different materials, like marble, sandstone, or human enamel. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) was synthesized from diverse water-free alcohol solutions, resulting in the formation of vaterite and calcite precipitates, or stable particle suspensions, with the dimensions and morphologies depending upon the conditions used. Many phenomena depend on CaCO3 nucleation where the role of water remains enigmatic. Changes in THz absorption during the early stages of CaCO3 nucleation evidence altered coupled motions of hydrated calcium and carbonate ions. The direct link between these changes and the continuous development of the ion activity product reveals the locus of a liquid-liquid binodal limit. The data strongly suggest that proto-structured amorphous CaCO3 forms through solidification of initially liquid precursors. Furthermore, polycarboxylates, which stabilize liquid precursors of CaCO3, significantly enhance the kinetic stability of the metastable liquid-liquid state, but they do not affect the locus of the binodal limit. The importance of water network dynamics in phase separation mechanisms can be understood based on the notions of the pre-nucleation cluster pathway, and is likely to be more general for aqueous systems. Synergistic relations between organic molecules and mineral precursors regulate biogenic mineralization. Given the remarkable material properties of the egg shell as a biogenic ceramic, it serves as an important model to elucidate biomineral growth. With established roles of complex anionic biopolymers and a heterogeneous organic scaffold in egg shell mineralization, the present study explores the regulation over mineralization attained by applying synthetic polymeric counterparts (polyethylene glycol, poly(acrylic acid), poly(aspartic acid) and poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-maleic acid)) as additives during remineralization of decalcified eggshell membranes. By applying Mg2+ ions as a co-additive species, mineral retrosynthesis is achieved in a manner that modulates the polymorph and structure of mineral products. Notable features of the mineralization process include distinct local wettability of the biogenic organic scaffold by mineral precursors and mineralization-induced membrane actuation. Overall, the form, structure and polymorph of the mineralization products are synergistically affected by the additive and the content of Mg2+ ions. We also revisit the physicochemical nature of the biomineral scaffold and demonstrate the distinct spatial distribution of anionic biomolecules associated with the scaffold-mineral interface, as well as highlight the hydrogel-like properties of mammillae-associated macromolecules. Proteins are known to play various key roles in the formation of complex inorganic solids during natural biomineralisation processes. However, in most cases our understanding of the actual underlying mechanisms is rather limited. One interesting example is perlucin, a protein involved in the formation of nacre, where it is believed to promote the crystallisation of calcium carbonate. In the present work, we have used potentiometric titration assays to systematically investigate the influence of recombinant GFP-labeled perlucin derivatives on the early stages of CaCO3 formation. Our results indicate that different parts of the protein can impact nucleation in distinct ways and act in either a retarding or promoting fashion. The most important finding is that full-length GFP-perlucin changes the nature of the initially precipitated phase and seems to favour the direct formation of crystalline polymorphs over nucleation of ACC and subsequent phase transformation, as observed in reference experiments without protein. This confirms the supposed role of perlucin in nacre biomineralisation and may rely on specific interactions between the protein and the crystal lattice of the emerging mineral phase. Amorphous intermediate phases are vital precursors in the crystallization of many biogenic minerals. While inherent short-range orders have been found in amorphous calcium carbonates (ACCs) relating to different crystalline forms, it has never been clarified experimentally whether such orders already exist in very small clusters less than 2 nm in size. Here, we studied the stability and structure of 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid (PCDA) protected ACC clusters with a core size of ca. 1.4 nm consisting of only seven CaCO3 units. Ligand concentration and structure are shown to be key factors in stabilizing the ACC clusters. More importantly, even in such small CaCO3 entities, a proto-calcite short-range order can be identified but with a relatively high degree of disorder that arises from the very small size of the CaCO3 core. Our findings support the notion of a structural link between prenucleation clusters, amorphous intermediates, and final crystalline polymorphs, which appears central to the understanding of polymorph selection. Given increasing environmental issues due to the large usage of non-biodegradable plastics based on petroleum, new plastic materials, which are economic, environmentally friendly, and recyclable are in high demand. One feasible strategy is the bio-inspired synthesis of mineral-based hybrid materials. Herein we report a facile route for an amorphous CaCO3 (ACC)-based hydrogel consisting of very small ACC nanoparticles physically cross-linked by poly(acrylic acid). The hydrogel is shapeable, stretchable, and self-healable. Upon drying, the hydrogel forms free-standing, rigid, and transparent objects with remarkable mechanical performance. By swelling in water, the material can completely recover the initial hydrogel state. As a matrix, thermochromism can also be easily introduced. The effect of amphoteric siderophore deferoxamine on the crystallization behavior of calcium carbonate was investigated under bioinspired conditions. Amphoteric siderophore deferoxamine possesses self-organization ability, surface activity and ion-chelating properties. It induces in the present case the formation of unusual, highly organized aragonite mesocrystals during the precipitation of calcium carbonate from liquid phase. Structuring over many length scales is a design strategy widely used in Nature to create materials with unique functional properties. We here present a comprehensive analysis of an adult sea urchin spine. and in revealing a complex, hierarchical structure, show how Nature fabricates a material which diffracts as a single crystal of calcite and yet fractures as a glassy material. Each spine comprises a highly oriented array of Mg-calcite nanocrystals in which amorphous regions and macromolecules are embedded. It is postulated that this meso-crystalline structure forms via the crystallization of a dense array of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) precursor particles. A residual surface layer of ACC and/or macromolecules remains around the nanoparticle units which creates the mesocrystal structure and contributes to the conchoidal fracture behavior. Nature's demonstration of how crystallization of an amorphous precursor phase can create a crystalline material with remarkable properties therefore provides inspiration for a novel approach to the design and synthesis of synthetic composite materials. This article focuses on mesocrystals and morphology change of CaCO3 crystals in the presence of a polyelectrolyte additive. Crystallization control is one of the most important techniques of preparation, purification, and application of solid substances, making it an intensely studied field. Besides conventional crystallization, there are also nonclassical pathways of crystallization via colloidal intermediates and mesoscale transformation, in which crystalline structures are constructed and/or transformed from larger units instead of single ions. The authors present a simple system of calcite paired with polystyrene sulfonate, which undergoes mesocrystal formation. Appropriate concentration adjustment of both partners allows broad, systematic variation of the mesocrystal morphology that demonstrates long-range interactions. Moreover, the authors reports that selective coding of nanocrystal surfaces by polymers can not only lead to mesocrystals exposing unusual crystal faces in their superstructure, but also can form self-assembled structures with changed symmetry.

This Communication addresses the effects of egg membrane- and shell-associated proteoglycans, namely, keratan sulfate and dermatan sulfate, respectively, on the nascent stages of CaCO3 mineralization. Composed of calcitic columns intimately associated with a collagen membrane, the mechanisms underlying mineral growth are regulated by biomolecules. Of these, the role of proteoglycans is crucial because of their defined temporal and spatial distributions that direct mineral growth. The proteoglycans analyzed here induce dissimilar effects on the early stages of calcium carbonate mineralization. Egg-membrane associated keratan sulfate has a stabilizing effect toward soluble calcium carbonate prenucleation clusters and promotes formation of phases with lower solubility products after nucleation. In contrast, dermatan sulfate destabilizes prenucleation clusters and leads to more soluble phases of calcium carbonate postnucleation. The debate about crystallization processes is still ongoing and nonclassical crystallization mechanisms attract more and more attention. This work indicates that polymer induced liquid precursor (PILP) phases play a role for nonclassical calcium carbonate crystallization and growth processes. Here we report the observation of gel-like precursors for the crystal growth on a calcite surface by means of an in situ AFM study. These precursors spread out on the surface with time supporting their liquid character. This study will give new insights into biomineralization and crystallization processes in general. Electrospun submicrometer-sized poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) meshes and nanosized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used as a template for preparing porous and interconnected inorganic-organic hybrid materials composed of CaCO3. Herein, we describe the proportion and incorporation method of submicrometer-sized plasma-treated PCL meshes over areas >1 mm² with CaCO3 using three crystallization methods including the use of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). We found that flexible and rigid acid-functionalized MWCNTs showed a clear capacity and effects to penetrate calcite particles. MWCNTs interacted differently with the individual growth planes of CaCO3, indicating that fibers can undergo changes depending on sulfonate or carboxylate groups, adopt different orientations in solution, and thereby elicit changes in CaCO3 morphology. In summary, the use of PCL and acidic MWCNT fibers as an additive for substrate templates and experimental crystallization provides a viable approach for studying various aspects of biomineralization, including the production of controlled particles, control of porosities, and defined morphologies at microscale and nanoscale levels. From recent studies on bone and shell formation, the importance of polysaccharides in biomineralization processes is gradually being recognized. Through ion-complexation and self-assembly properties, such macromolecules have remarkable effects on mineralization. However, their influences on the different regimes of crystallization including the interactions with precursor species are unclear. The present study therefore addresses calcium carbonate mineralization in the presence of alginates, a class of linear copolymeric saccharides composed of β-1,4 linked d-mannuronic and l-guluronic acid. During mineralization, this biopolymer is found to exert pH-dependent control over mineralization pathways in terms of the stability of prenucleation clusters, inhibitory effect toward nucleation and initially formed postnucleation products. Remarkably in the presence of this macromolecular additive, either amorphous or crystalline vaterite particles can be selectively nucleated in a pH-dependent manner. This is validated by electron microscopy wherein vaterite particles are intimately associated with alginate assemblies after nucleation at pH 9.75. At lower pH, aggregates of amorphous particles are formed. Thus, in addition to the general focus on biochemical properties of additives, solution pH, a physiologically fundamental parameter significantly alters the scheme of mineralization.
