As a new interdisciplinary field, synthetic biology has led to valuable innovations in the fields of medicine, chemistry, agriculture, energy and environment. In this paper, we systematically review the development status of global synthetic biology in the past six years, and make an in-depth benchmarking analysis of the field in China. With the aid of Scopus and SciVal, we analyze the scholarly output of synthetic biology in the world and individual countries, including publication distribution, popular journals and eminent institutions. Furthermore, the research focus and concepts, citation impact and collaborations are also examined using numerical index methods such as the field-weighted citation impact (FWCI) and relative activity index (RAI), showing the differences between data more intuitively. This study aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of the research status of synthetic biology in China and the world, offering a benchmarked overview of the results as a reference to guide the development of this field in the future.

Neuro-oncology is a growing, interdisciplinary field at the intersection of neurology and oncology, devoted to the care of patients with central nervous system tumors and neurologic complications of cancer, and collaboratively interfacing with neurosurgery, neuropathology, medical oncology and radiation oncology. There is increasing trainee interest in the field of neuro-oncology and an increasing number of fellowship training programs, attracting applicants with backgrounds in neurology, neurosurgery and medical oncology. The present guide aims to provide some general recommendations for residents and fellows to help them make the most out of their neuro-oncology fellowship and enable them to start their careers as a neuro-oncologists on firm footing.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made it clear that effective public health messaging is an indispensable component of a robust pandemic response system. In this article, we review decades of research from the interdisciplinary field of communication science and provide evidence-based recommendations for COVID-19 public health messaging. We take a principled approach by systematically examining the communication process, focusing on decisions about what to say in a message (i.e., message content) and how to say it (i.e., message executions), and how these decisions impact message persuasiveness. Following a synthesis of each major line of literature, we discuss how science-based principles of message design can be used in COVID-19 public health messaging. Additionally, we identify emerging challenges for public health messaging during the COVID-19 pandemic and discuss possible remedies. We conclude that communication science offers promising public health messaging strategies for combatting COVID-19 and future pandemics.

The topicality of this research is explained by the increased interest in public relations (PR) discourse as a response to the challenges of the present. The main objective of the research is linguistic study of PR discourse from the standpoint of interdisciplinarity. It is important to examine not only the peculiarities of PR pragmatics aimed at achieving the hearts of people, but also the linguistic means employed by PR managers in their practice to influence and control public opinion. Linguocultural research as part of an interdisciplinary approach to PR discourse implies its anthropocentric-communicative interpretation to carry out an integral linguistic analysis of PR discourse that forms its interdisciplinary core as well as its genre-stylistic particularity. The results and discussion given in the body of the article show that PR is a three-faceted entity, including the professional communication, multi-disciplinarity of knowledge required for PR experts as well as professional tools and skills. Linguistic expression of axiological aspect of PR discourse dealing with companies’ positive reputation is given special attention in this paper. The authors come to the conclusion that interdisciplinary knowledge transfer is of growing demand as it enriches the theoretical and practical spheres of human activity.

Questions of trust are increasingly important in relation to data and its use. The authors focus on humanities data and its visualization, through analysis of their own recent projects with museums, archives and libraries internationally. Their account connects the specifics of hands-on digital humanities work to larger epistemological questions. They discuss the sources of potential mistrust, and examine how different expectations and assumptions emerge depending on the use and user of the data; they offer a simple schema through which the implications may be traced. It is argued that vital issues of trust can be engaged with through design, which, rather than being conceived as a cosmetic finish, is seen as contributing insights and questions that affect the whole process. The article concludes with recommendations intended to be useful in both theory and practice.

According to a recent survey by the HR Research Institute, as the presence of artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly common in the workplace, HR professionals are worried that the use of recruitment algorithms will lead to a “dehumanization” of the hiring process. Our main goals in this paper are threefold: (i) to bring attention to this neglected issue, (ii) to clarify what exactly this concern about dehumanization might amount to, and (iii) to sketch an argument for why dehumanizing the hiring process is ethically suspect. After distinguishing the use of the term “dehumanization” in this context (i.e. removing the human presence) from its more common meaning in the interdisciplinary field of dehumanization studies (i.e. conceiving of other humans as subhuman), we argue that the use of hiring algorithms may negatively impact the employee-employer relationship. We argue that there are good independent reasons to accept a substantive employee-employer relationship, as well as an applicant-employer relationship, both of which are consistent with a stakeholder theory of corporate obligations. We further argue that dehumanizing the hiring process may negatively impact these relationships because of the difference between the values of human recruiters and the values embedded in recruitment algorithms. Drawing on Nguyen’s (in: Lackey, Applied Epistemology, Oxford University Press, 2021) critique of how Twitter “gamifies communication”, we argue that replacing human recruiters with algorithms imports artificial values into the hiring process. We close by briefly considering some ways to potentially mitigate the problems posed by recruitment algorithms, along with the possibility that some difficult trade-offs will need to be made.

The conservative and surgical treatment of children is a fundamental pillar of the urological specialist training program and represents one of the core competencies within urological healthcare. The loss of this expertise has been a reoccurring topic within urologic occupational policy. The aim of this study is to analyse actual case numbers and to compare the distribution and dynamics of pediatric urologic surgeries between the specialist departments of urology and pediatric surgery in Germany.We defined the surgical treatments of maldecensus testis, hypospadias, and vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) as index interventions. Using the tool reimbursement.INFO (RI Innovation GmbH, Hürth, Germany) we analysed publicly available quality report data of German hospitals between 2006 and 2019.While orchidopexy was more commonly performed in the field of urology, the correction of hypospadias and the surgical treatment of VUR showed higher case numbers in the field of pediatric surgery. Proportionally, there was no relevant shift between urologic and pediatric surgical clinics for orchidopexy and surgical VUR therapy during the study period. For hypospadias corrections, the proportion of surgeries performed in pediatric surgical units is increasing (p 0.0001). In pediatric surgery 84-93% of the analyzed procedures are performed in high-volume units, while this proportion is 56-73% in urology. In particular, a high proportion of VUR therapy in urology is performed as an occasional procedure (30% very low volume).The quality report data enable the compilation of case numbers and the analysis of the distribution between urology and pediatric surgery in Germany. Merely the correction of hypospadias has shown a relevant shift towards pediatric surgery. The causes and possible consequences for professional policy of this preliminary investigation are complex and require further analysis.HINTERGRUND: Die konservative und chirurgische Behandlung von Kindern ist in der urologischen Facharztweiterbildung fest verankert und stellt eine Kernkompetenz der urologischen Versorgung dar. Berufspolitisch wird seit vielen Jahren ein zunehmender Verlust dieses Schwerpunkts befürchtet. Ziel dieser Studie ist es, reale Fallzahlen und eine mögliche Dynamik in der Verteilung kinderurologischer Eingriffe auf die Fachabteilungen für Urologie und Kinderchirurgie in Deutschland zu prüfen.Als Index-Eingriffe definierten wir Operationen des Hodenhochstands, der Hypospadie und des vesikoureteralen Refluxes (VUR). Mithilfe der Software reimbursement.INFO (RI Innovation GmbH, Hürth) werteten wir die öffentlich zugänglichen Qualitätsberichtsdaten der deutschen Krankenhäuser von 2006 bis 2019 aus und wiesen sie den entsprechenden Fachrichtungen zu.Die Orchidopexie erfolgt häufiger in der Urologie, wohingegen die Hypospadiekorrektur und die operative Therapie des VUR häufiger in der Kinderchirurgie durchgeführt werden. Anteilig zeigte sich für die Orchidopexie und die operative Refluxtherapie keine relevante Verschiebung zwischen urologischen und kinderchirurgischen Kliniken im Untersuchungszeitraum. Bei den Hypospadiekorrekturen nimmt der Anteil der Operationen in kinderchirurgischen Einheiten zu (p 0,0001). In der Kinderchirurgie erfolgen 84–93 % der analysierten Eingriffe in High-volume-Abteilungen während dieser Anteil in der Urologie bei 56–73 % liegt. Insbesondere die operative Refluxtherapie in der Urologie erfolgt zu einem hohen Anteil als Gelegenheitseingriff (30 % „very low volume“).Die Qualitätsberichtsdaten ermöglichen die Erfassung der Fallzahlen und die Analyse der Verteilung zwischen Urologie und Kinderchirurgie in Deutschland. Dabei ist für die Hypospadiekorrektur eine relevante Verschiebung in Richtung der Kinderchirurgie zu beobachten. Die Ursachen und möglichen berufspolitischen Konsequenzen dieser ersten Erhebung sind komplex und bedürfen weiterer Analysen.

Data science is an interdisciplinary field that extracts knowledge and insights from many structural and unstructured data, using scientific methods, data mining techniques, machine-learning algorithms, and big data. The healthcare industry generates large datasets of useful information on patient demography, treatment plans, results of medical examinations, insurance, etc. The data collected from the Internet of Things (IoT) devices attract the attention of data scientists. Data science provides aid to process, manage, analyze, and assimilate the large quantities of fragmented, structured, and unstructured data created by healthcare systems. This data requires effective management and analysis to acquire factual results. The process of data cleansing, data mining, data preparation, and data analysis used in healthcare applications is reviewed and discussed in the article. The article provides an insight into the status and prospects of big data analytics in healthcare, highlights the advantages, describes the frameworks and techniques used, briefs about the challenges faced currently, and discusses viable solutions. Data science and big data analytics can provide practical insights and aid in the decision-making of strategic decisions concerning the health system. It helps build a comprehensive view of patients, consumers, and clinicians. Data-driven decision-making opens up new possibilities to boost healthcare quality.

The problem of forming an integrated approach to the methodology of economic control (including audit and internal control) is considered in the article. Auditing in the IT environment and with the use of ІТ combines the features of social, natural, and exact sciences, and deals with research objects, which are conceptual systems, natural systems, and abstract systems.The structure of the method of economic control and audit is proposed. The audit method has a twodimensional (static and dynamic) and two-tier structure. At the general theoretical level, it includes 1) basic, general scientific theoretical techniques and approaches; 2) general research procedures inherent in auditing as an interdisciplinary field that combines research methodologies from natural, social, and exact sciences. At the applied (technological) level, the elements of the auditing method are control procedures and control technologies based on general scientific methods, approaches, and research procedures.The scientific procedure of audit and internal control is investigated and the methods based on the toolkit of exact sciences in conditions of ІТ application were proposed. The research method is arranged according to the selected objects. The techniques are grouped into three categories: a) techniques for collecting facts about physical characteristics; b) methods of thinking to gain understanding; c) modelling and programming. The identified facts are assessed and compared with the norm and an auditing result is formed, as well as in the direct implementation of corrective action. Ця структура лягла в основу запропонованої загальної процедури дослідження в аудиті, яка базується на поєднанні елементів методології дослідження природничих, суспільних та точних наук, що дало змогу сформувати комплексний підхід до удосконалення методології аудиту в умовах та із застосуванням інформаційних технологій.Можливе застосування результатів дослідження: на підставі розроблених положень можлива розробка організаційних і методичних положень аудиту та контролю в умовах застосування інформаційних технологій.Висновки. Об’єктами аудиту є як фінансові показники, так і характеристики бізнес-процесів, функціонування облікової системи, а отже, і функціонування інформаційних систем і технологій, за допомогою яких здійснюються облік і бізнес-процеси. В умовах використання інформаційних систем спостерігається взаємне проникнення та інтеграція різних видів контрольної діяльності. На практиці на проведення аудиторських перевірок завжди накладаються часові, просторові, бюджетні та юридичні обмеження. Завданням подальших досліджень має стати зняття або розширення цих обмежень. Реальну можливість зробити це надають інформаційні технології та моделювання бізнес-процесів з їхньою допомогою. JEL classification: M420

The widespread adoption of digital technologies and online social networks has revolutionized the way marketers engage with consumers. By deploying various digital platforms and information and communication technology (ICT) tools (e.g., smartphones, social media, mobile apps, electronic billboards, etc.), organizations can compete with more objective, relational, and interactive marketing techniques. The adoption of innovative devices and data-driven marketing, specifically in digital advertising, provides both a wide and efficient reach. Consequently, digital marketing (DM) triggered the creation of more informed, empowered, and connected groups of customers in both the real and virtual worlds. This paper tracks research dynamics in interactive digital marketing by identifying the stages of evolution of major topics, articles, citation and co-citation networks, using various computational techniques, including growth curve analysis and citation network analysis of bibliometric information. Finally, the study offers contributions to the field of interactive digital marketing as an international and interdisciplinary field of research.

Knowledge production within the interdisciplinary field of human–robot interaction (HRI) with social robots has accelerated, despite the continued fragmentation of the research domain. Together, these features make it hard to remain at the forefront of research or assess the collective evidence pertaining to specific areas, such as the role of emotions in HRI. This systematic review of state-of-the-art research into humans’ recognition and responses to artificial emotions of social robots during HRI encompasses the years 2000–2020. In accordance with a stimulus–organism–response framework, the review advances robotic psychology by revealing current knowledge about (1) the generation of artificial robotic emotions (stimulus), (2) human recognition of robotic artificial emotions (organism), and (3) human responses to robotic emotions (response), as well as (4) other contingencies that affect emotions as moderators.

Komplexe Krankheitsbilder, die Vernetzung der Berufsgruppen sowie die Digitalisierung des Gesundheitswesens stellen hohe Anforderungen an die Gesundheitsberufe in Deutschland, insbesondere in Hinblick auf die Umsetzung von interprofessioneller Zusammenarbeit. Ziel der Studie ist, die Bedarfe, Erwartungen, Barrieren und Wünsche bezüglich einer digital unterstützten interprofessionellen Zusammenarbeit ambulanter Praxen der Ergotherapie, Logopädie und Physiotherapie (ELP) zu untersuchen, um diese Herausforderungen zu adressieren. Mittels qualitativer Methoden wurden Therapeuten/-innen in zwei Fokusgruppen hinsichtlich ihrer Ansichten zur Interprofessionalität und dem aktuellen Einsatz von digitalen Medien befragt und darauf aufbauend Wünsche und Anforderungen an ein digitales Medium zur Unterstützung der interprofessionellen Zusammenarbeit (IZ) gesammelt. Mittels der qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse nach Kuckartz wurden die Kernaussagen entlang von Hauptkategorien wie „Berufliches Selbstverständnis ELP“, „Barrieren IZ“ und „Wünsche an ein digitales Medium“ zusammengefasst und die Kategorien in einer Concept-Map eingeordnet. Das Ergebnis umfasst eine erste Definition der „Digitalen Interprofessionalität“. Diese beschreibt eine berufsgruppenübergreifende Arbeitsweise, unterstützt durch ein digitales Medium zur Verbesserung der Kommunikation und der Patientenversorgung. Außerdem konnte aus den Aussagen der Teilnehmenden ein Framework generiert werden, welches zum einen Rahmenbedingungen zur Nutzung, wie Abrechnungsmöglichkeiten und Datenschutzregelungen, beinhaltet. Zum anderen sind gewünschte Funktionen sowie Gestaltungsideen abgebildet, beispielsweise ein Forum und intuitives Design. Die Ergebnisse der Studie bestätigen in der Literatur angeführte Barrieren der IZ, vor allem durch die Heilmittelrichtlinien, und verdeutlichen die Diskrepanz von Wünschen und Möglichkeiten. Mit der vorgeschlagenen Definition von digitaler Interprofessionalität wird, unter Einbezug der Digitalisierung, eine neue Perspektive auf IZ zwischen ELP eröffnet. Das Framework bietet Kriterien, welche in die Entwicklung eines ersten Prototypens einfließen können.

This paper seeks to access the stated knowledge about the practices and challenges faced by teachers and educators in the activities of plastic and visual expression in Primary Education in Portugal. As teacher training is nowadays organized in two cycles of higher education: a first cycle of initial training in basic education and a second cycle of specialized training with emphasis on supervised teaching practices, we tried to study some reports of these practices, made to obtain the Master's degree. In these reports, future teachers present the activities implemented in the school context as well as the teaching-learning procedures and strategies developed with elementary school students with the integration of different curricular areas. Neste trabalho procura-se aceder ao conhecimento declarado sobre as práticas e desafios que se colocam aos professores e educadores nas atividades de expressão plástica e visual no Ensino Básico em Portugal. Estando hoje a formação de professores, organizada em dois ciclos de estudos superiores: um primeiro ciclo de formação inicial em educação básica e um segundo ciclo de formação especializada com ênfase nas práticas de ensino supervisionada, procurámos estudar alguns relatórios dessas práticas, realizados para obtenção do grau de mestre. Nestes relatórios, os futuros professores apresentam as atividades implementadas em contexto escolar bem como os procedimentos e as estratégias de ensino-aprendizagem desenvolvidos com os alunos do ensino básico com a integração das diferentes áreas curriculares.

Learning analytics (LA) collects, analyses, and reports big data about learners to optimise learning. LA ethics is an interdisciplinary field of study that addresses moral, legal, and social issues; therefore, institutions are responsible for implementing frameworks that integrate these topics. Many of the ethical issues raised apply equally to educational data sets of any size. However, in this study, we focus on big data that increases the scale and granularity of data gathered. The purpose of this study is twofold: (a) to critically review the published (2011–2018) scientific literature on LA ethics issues and (b) to identify current trends and answer research questions in the field. This study’s research questions are as follows: what is essential in LA ethics for key educational stakeholders, and what should a proposed checklist for LA ethics include for specific educational stakeholders? After systematically searching online bibliographic databases, journals, and conferences, a literature review identified 53 articles from a sample of 562. The selected articles, based on critical and qualitative content analysis, were exhaustively analysed. The findings demonstrate the shortage of empirical evidence-based guidelines on LA ethics and highlight the need to establish codes of practices to monitor and evaluate LA ethics policies. Finally, this work proposes a useful checklist as an instructional design model for scholars, policymakers, and instructional designers, so that trusted partners may use LA responsibly to improve teaching and learning.

This article discusses the issue of systematization of international joint programmes in higher education. The authors analyze the criteria for differentiating between various types of international joint programmes. In particular, the authors propose to distinguish between international double degree programmes and dual degree programmes. Different classifications of international joint programmes are substantiated through the analysis of successful experience of their implementation in Russia and abroad in the context of globalization and international educational integration. The article also gives ground to the general criteria of the effectiveness of the implementation of various types of joint educational programmes. It is concluded that the systematization of international joint programmes will allow to avoid confusing terminology, and considering the fact such programmes are developed and implemented by universities with different backgrounds from different regions of the world, sometimes even from different education systems, this approach will greatly simplify academic cooperation between universities of different countries in the context of cultural differences and particular features of different national legislative regulations. Considering the different types of joint international programmes and the practice of their implementation in universities, the authors proceed from the fact that all these programmesrepresent effective ways of creating a single European higher education area, an important tool for implementing the principles of the Bologna process. Regarding the task of improving the competitiveness of universities that implement international joint programmes, the article also identifies the significant benefits for students acquiring specific intercultural, communicative, as well as interdisciplinary professional competencies and, respectively, advantages in employment, both in their own country and abroad.

The articles included in this special issue of Families, Systems, & Health on informatics represent distinct elements of health informatics relevant to the implementation and provision of clinical services. Informatics is the collection, analysis, and application of data for direct care decisions in health care and an interdisciplinary field that brings medicine together with computer, cognitive, and social sciences. We frame the contributions of the included articles within the framework of the Quadruple Aim for health care: better outcomes, lower costs, improved patient satisfaction, and improved work life of health care providers. The examples provided aim to show how health informatics provides opportunities to improve care delivered to patients at individual and system levels while both identifying and closing gaps in research addressing the management and use of information generated in the course of delivering health care. The articles in this special issue reflect the cutting edge of health care, research and technology, where there is as much risk as there is promise of delivering stability to our dynamic health care system. Interdisciplinarity is widely considered necessary to solving many contemporary problems, and new funding structures and instruments have been created to encourage interdisciplinary research at universities. In this article, we study a small technical university specializing in green technology which implemented a strategy aimed at promoting and developing interdisciplinary collaboration. It did so by reallocating its internal research funds for at least five years to “research platforms” that required researchers from at least two of the three schools within the university to participate. Using data from semi-structured interviews from researchers in three of these platforms, we identify specific tensions that the strategy has generated in this case: (1) in the allocation of platform resources, (2) in the division of labor and disciplinary relations, (3) in choices over scientific output and academic careers. We further show how the particular platform format exacerbates the identified tensions in our case. We suggest that certain features of the current platform policy incentivize shallow interdisciplinary interactions, highlighting potential limits on the value of attempting to push for interdisciplinarity through internal funding.

Global energy systems are transforming from fossil fuels to renewables, but the conventional electricity systems are so fragile that could lead to negative consequences such as soaring prices, rolling blackouts, security issues and delays to emission reductions. Confronting to these issues, electricity systems of the future will be vastly changed, dominated by new technologies and business models, increasingly digital and highly complex. Such transformation will be enabled by means to efficiently, stably and affordably distribute electrical power from many sources and storage points. Market design, policy, regulations, legislations, cyber security and politics are barely keeping up with advances in technologies, and energy technology choices have multi-generational implications for people and economies. These issues are global and to find a solution requires true systems thinking, informed by cutting-edge research. This paper envisages interdisciplinary digitalized future energy systems for emission reductions and proposes a 6-theme template to shape the future energy system. The six research themes have been designed such that the “whole is greater than the sum of the parts”. Each theme is informed by the others and the inter-linking of the six themes’ inputs and outputs will drive the outcomes and impacts of future energy systems.

The article is devoted to priority solutions for launching systemic transformations of managerial education for the technological breakthrough. The basis for the development of such decisions was the scientific direction “Proactive Management in Actively Developing Industries and Economic Sectors”, in which the authors work, and the experience in creating educational products that meet the latest trends, including those that have appeared recently.The research methodology included analysis of scientific literature on the problems of complex systems development, proactive management and anticipatory training, systematization of educational practices for managers in foreign and domestic universities, conducting surveys of experts – heads of Russian large industrial enterprises, professors and students.The key reasons for the unsatisfactory state of management education are identified and a set of recommendations for its reform has been developed. Changes in organizational models of managerial education are proposed, the principles of implementing fundamental training and enhancing the humanization of education with a simultaneous increase in the level of knowledge of the scientific and technical foundations of production process are formulated. The conditions of increasing the effectiveness of students' practical training are considered, the forms of its implementation are determined to ensure the readiness of graduates to work in managerial positions. The results of long-term studies of anticipatory training, from managers at the lower levels to directors of large companies, are carried out. These results were obtained in the scientific and educational center “INZHEK” of the Ural Federal University and tested at various levels of management education (bachelor's, master's degrees).The results of the study are of practical interest to managers and professors of universities, business schools and corporate universities, as well as to top managers of business structures involved in improving personnel training.

In the article these are considered ethical and legal problems caused by the ongoing pandemic of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19). New challenges for health care, economy, education not only revealed rather a high level of stability and mobility, but also showed a poor readiness of response to sudden risks, which had a certain impact on all spheres of life of the whole society. The authors have conducted a brief cross-cultural analysis of the issue basing on data quoted by the international network of UNESCO chairs in bioethics, sessions of the Bioethics Committee within the RF Commission on UNESCO affairs, as well as official open sources of the health care system and judicial sphere of the Russian Federation. Strong reciprocal link of legal risks in the interdisciplinary field of medicine and law are made discernable: on the one hand, introduction of sanitary and hygienic regulations (using of personal protection gear, sanitary processing, maintaining social distance, etc.) are aimed at the realization of the right of protecting the health, while on the other hand they represent a violation of basic human rights. Besides the theoretical approach to the problem of the observance of the constitutional rights of citizens in the pandemic conditions there exists a real threat of their violation due to absence of special mechanisms of their realization in frames of sanitary and hygienic measures with regard to the vulnerable and socially disadvantaged sections in the society. It is made conclusion about necessity of the international collaboration for the purpose of joint decision-making and action in the sphere of health care taking into account an international character of ethical and legal challenges triggered by COVID-19 pandemic, as well as national, economic, cultural and confessional peculiarities.

PurposeNumerous exploratory, conceptual and empirical enquiries on financial behaviour and literacy have been conducted in the areas of economics, finance, business and management. However, no attempt was made to present a comprehensive science mapping of the area so far. Hence, the study intends to elicit the trend in the research field through synthesis of knowledge structures.Design/methodology/approachBibliometric analysis in the field of financial literacy and financial behaviour was performed on a sample of 1,138 documents based on a scientific search strategy run on the Web of Science database for the period 1985–2020. Biblioshiny, which is a web-based application included in Bibliometrix package developed in R-language (Ariaa and Cuccurullo, 2017), was used for the study. With the help of automated workflow in the software, prominent journals, authors, countries, articles, themes were identified; and citation, co-citation and social network analysis were conducted.FindingsResults show that the themes of financial literacy and financial behaviour have evolved over a period of time as an interdisciplinary field. In the initial stages, researchers focused on demographic and socio-economic determinants, but gradually the field embraced topics like behavioural and psychological constructs influencing financial behaviour. Along with conceptual structure, this research reveals the intellectual and social structure of the domain. This study provides important insights on areas that need further investigation.Research limitations/implicationsThe current research is a bibliometric analysis and hence limitations related to such studies are applicable. For future researchers to derive a strong conceptual framework, a systematic review of literature would be helpful. Science mapping for this study is limited to the Web of Science database owing to its wider coverage of good quality journals, structured formats which are compatible with the Bibliometrix software.Practical implicationsThe current study provides important insights on financial literacy and financial behaviour and their inter-linkages. It highlights the most addressed issues in the area and leads towards the prospective areas for research. It informs the future researchers about the emergent themes, contexts and possibilities of collaborations in this area by revealing social and intellectual structure of the domain.Social implicationsThe paper can provide important insights for policy formulation in the areas of financial education and literacy.Originality/valueThere has been lot of conceptual and empirical work done in the past, across countries, spanning the disciplines such as economics, finance, psychology and consumer behaviour. A major contribution of this study is that it consolidates fragmented literature in the area, highlights significant sources, authors and documents, while exploring the relation between financial literacy and financial behaviour.

Games User Research (GUR) is an interdisciplinary field of study that aims to measure, analyze, and understand the interaction and experience of players with digital games. Joining efforts to the advances in GUR, this work focuses on the evaluation of player interaction with Location-Based Games (LBGs), seeking to understand which aspects of this interaction can be explored through interviews and how researchers and practitioners have been using this method. We analyzed 23 studies that applied interviews to this end and conducted an expert opinion survey with the authors of these studies. As a result, we presented lessons and research challenges for the use of interviews in this type of evaluation, in hopes to encourage the conscious and systematic application of this method, in addition to guiding practitioners and researchers, especially beginners.

Introduction. The area of intercultural communication with its system-forming theory, empirical research and implementation is gaining currency both in academic research and in the professional training of students. Regarding the latter aspect, there is a need (a) for developing a concept for the training of master’s students with knowledge of foreign languages; (b) for the introduction of new educational practices that successfully combine intercultural communication, foreign language and the modeling of communicative behavior in foreign language communication with its further reproduction in language practice in the students’ native language as well as (c) for the introduction of an educational project using modern technologies in the practice of institutions of higher education. The paper discusses the concept, structure and content of an educational project relying on the experience of higher education in Russia and Germany and aims to work towards an understanding of the social significance of future professional activities, primarily concerning the specific problems as well as of the adequacy of social and professional contacts in intercultural communication. Materials and Methods. Based on the subject, object and objectives of the study, the project’s methodological plan was implemented in the following stages: project planning, development of the fundamental features of the concept; determination of the project’s content; project modeling; introduction to the training of master’s students of various specialties at institutions of higher education. The methodological basis of the project consisted of the analysis of intercultural communication between representatives of the German and the Russian linguocultural community as well as the exchange of experience between them and their comparison. Results. Following the study and the exchange of experience between the institutions of higher education of Russia and Germany, the need for an integrative educational course was revealed, aiming at the improvement and optimization of intercultural communication skills at the level of both professional and personal communication with the goal to prepare master’s students for their future as researchers and practitioners. The educational project presented in the paper drawing on an eponymous integrative course will increase the efficiency of the training of master’s students from various specialized fields and prepare them for successful communication processes with representatives of other linguocultural communities. Discussion and Conclusion. The contents of this paper will be useful for researchers interested in optimizing the preparation of master’s students with knowledge in foreign languages by applying international experience.

The concept of frontier has been formed for a long time and in different directions. The main characteristics of a frontier - its flexible borders, a zone of space development characterised by uncertainty and instability - have proved their importance for understanding and describing the current state of the environment with regard to its social, cultural, communicative and linguistic indicators. The interdisciplinary (transcendental) potential of a frontier is realised in a complementary combination of natural-scientific and humanitarian scholarship. The aim of the present paper is to justify the scholarly integrity of the term frontier discourse the conceptual milieu of which is created through two overlapping multi-layered phenomena: frontier and discourse. The paper names the vectors of expanding the interdisciplinary possibilities of a frontier under the conditions of a discourse approach. Frontier as a flexible border is presented in the Internet communication, the socio-cultural space of the modern city, in the daily behavioural norms of the elite, in the family relations and in many other conceptual spheres the list of which remains open based on the ontological features of a frontier. Based on the examples from Russian and foreign literature, the author demonstrates the role of the frontier modus in the interpretation of literary texts whose plot, style and images are projected onto national history, culture, mentality in the by-border characteristics. Such frontier features as instability, its ability to create an interaction zone, which, under certain conditions, can lead to integration, are important for understanding the problems of modern language, speech and genre norms. The byborder territory is a place accumulating violations of traditional norms and providing the material which is necessary in order to anticipate the arising norm changes. The transformation of traditional genres and the formation of new ones also take place on frontier territories. It is concluded that frontier discourse ensures the understanding of norm movements in genre-stylistic characteristics.

En los últimos años, la aplicación de los estudios arqueométricos se ha incrementado notablemente. Por un lado, porque se ha logrado expandir un campo interdisciplinario que ha permitido la capacitación de los profesionales. Por el otro, porque se han logrado desarrollar espacios de trabajo con acceso al uso de diferentes técnicas analíticas, así como el diálogo e intercambio en el análisis de los resultados entre especialistas. En cuanto al estudio de materiales cerámicos arqueológicos, los avances en el desarrollo de las técnicas y la tecnología vinculada al trabajo arqueométrico ha facilitado la revisión de resultados y datos que fueran obtenidos oportunamente durante las investigaciones, con el fin de continuar explorando problemáticas arqueológicas y resolver cuestiones pendientes relacionadas con procesos de producción y circulación de materiales cerámicos, prácticas sociales de intercambio, interacción e integración y sus rituales asociados, entre otros. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo mostrar la aplicación de nuevas tecnologías y metodologías adaptadas a materiales cerámicos para evaluar su potencial afín al alcance de la información obtenida y revisar e incorporar nuevos datos vinculados con el estudio de la procedencia de materias primas, caracterización de pastas y técnicas de manufactura usadas por los alfareros andinos. Para ello, se presentan dos casos de estudio de cerámicas arqueológicas de la Quebrada de Humahuaca, provincia de Jujuy (Argentina), a partir de análisis realizados con petrografía-QEMSCAN, Raman-IFT-IR, microscopio UV-IR y microestratrigrafías de pigmentos. Los resultados obtenidos han ofrecido información adicional y específica para interpretar las interacciones dentro y fuera del espacio de la Quebrada de Humahuaca en diferentes momentos cronológicos del pasado prehispánico, dando cuenta del uso del espacio circumpuneño por las comunidades que lo habitaron

Currently, a new interdisciplinary field of research – financial behaviour-is rapidly developing. Psychological characteristics of the subject of financial behaviour can have a significant impact on the decision-making process in this field. Cognitive style, as an individual way of processing the information perceived by the subject, is one of the factors determining such procedural features of financial decision-making as: the time spent on decision – making, the speed of decision-making, the emotional state of the individual during decision-making, the nature of perceptual information processing (especially oculomotor activity), as well as the type of decision strategy - rational, irrational or marginal.

Humans communicate, receive, and store information using sequences of items -- from words in a sentence or notes in music to abstract concepts in lectures and books. The networks formed by these items (nodes) and the sequential transitions between them (edges) encode important structural features of human communication and knowledge. But how do humans learn the networks of probabilistic transitions that underlie sequences of items? Moreover, what do people's internal maps of these networks look like? Here, we introduce graph learning, a growing and interdisciplinary field focused on studying how humans learn and represent networks in the world around them. We begin by describing established results from statistical learning showing that humans are adept at detecting differences in the transition probabilities between items in a sequence. We next present recent experiments that directly control for differences in transition probabilities, demonstrating that human behavior also depends critically on the abstract network structure of transitions. Finally, we present computational models that researchers have proposed to explain the effects of network structure on human behavior and cognition. These techniques have the potential to create new automated tools that could improve clinical workflows and unlock unstructured textual information contained in radiology and clinical reports for the development of radiology and clinical artificial intelligence applications. These applications will combine the appropriate application of classic linguistic and NLP preprocessing techniques, modern NLP techniques, and modern deep learning techniques.

Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) is an interdisciplinary and dynamic modelling approach for the study of today’s global challenges. It is used for the explanation, description, and prediction of behaviours of system components and the system at large. To understand and assess the quality of research in which CAS models are designed and used, a thorough understanding of the meanings of ‘validity’ from social science research methodology and ‘validation’ from simulation modelling is needed. In this paper, we first describe the modelling process. Then, we analyse the concepts ‘validity’ and ‘validation’ as used in a set of research methodology textbooks and a set of modelling textbooks. We present one single map that integrates validity as characteristic of the model input, the modelling process, model validation, and the validity of the model built. The map is illustrated by means of one example. The terminology proposed in the map allows to describe and distinguish between the validity of primary research used for input in the model, how the quality of the modelling depends on structural and behavioural validation, and, how the assessment of the validity of the model is informed by these types of validation plus research with independent data.

Aging is recognized as a common risk factor for many chronic diseases and functional decline. The newly emerging field of geroscience is an interdisciplinary field that aims to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms of aging. Several fundamental biological processes have been proposed as hallmarks of aging. The proposition of the geroscience hypothesis is that targeting holistically these highly integrated hallmarks could be an effective approach to preventing the pathogenesis of age-related diseases jointly, thereby improving the health span of most individuals. There is a growing awareness concerning the benefits of the prophylactic use of probiotics in maintaining health and improving quality of life in the elderly population. In view of the rapid progress in geroscience research, a new emphasis on geroscience-based probiotics is in high demand, and such probiotics require extensive preclinical and clinical research to support their functional efficacy. Here we propose a new term, "gerobiotics", to define those probiotic strains and their derived postbiotics and para-probiotics that are able to beneficially attenuate the fundamental mechanisms of aging, reduce physiological aging processes, and thereby expand the health span of the host. We provide a thorough discussion of why the coining of a new term is warranted instead of just referring to these probiotics as anti-aging probiotics or with other similar terms. In this review, we highlight the needs and importance of the new field of gerobiotics, past and currently on-going research and development in the field, biomarkers for potential targets, and recommended steps for the development of gerobiotic products. Use of gerobiotics could be a promising intervention strategy to improve health span and longevity of humans in the future.

Health services research (HSR) is an interdisciplinary field that investigates and improves the design and delivery of health services from individual, group, organisational and system perspectives. HSR examines complex problems within health systems. Qualitative research plays an important role in aiding us to develop a nuanced understanding of patients, family, healthcare providers, teams and systems. However, the overwhelming majority of HSR publications using qualitative research use traditional methods such as focus groups and interviews. Arts-based research—artistic and creative forms of data collection such as dance, drama and photovoice—have had limited uptake in HSR due to the lack of clarity in the methods, their rationales and potential impacts. To address this uncertainty, we conducted a qualitative systematic review of studies that have employed arts-based research in HSR topics. We searched four databases for peer-reviewed, primary HSR studies. Using conventional content analysis, we analysed the rationales for using arts-based approaches in 42 primary qualitative studies. We found four rationales for using arts-based approaches for HSR: (1) Capture aspects of a topic that may be overlooked, ignored or not conceptualised by other methods (ie, quantitative and interview-based qualitative methods). (2) Allow participants to reflect on their own experiences. (3) Generate valuable community knowledge to inform intervention design and delivery. (4) Formulate research projects that are more participatory in nature. This review provides health services researchers with the tools, reasons, rationales and justifications for using arts-based methods. We conclude this review by discussing the practicalities of making arts-based approaches commensurable to HSR.

The author focuses on the legal aesthetics dilemma, which appears in the dominant sense that the legal content prevails over the legal form. Some possible reasons and consequences of the aesthetical crisis are considered. The article offers the way to overcome that crisis. To this end the author outlines the new interdisciplinary field of legal studies called legal aesthetics. According to the author’s opinion the aesthetical criteria shall be applied primarily to the legal text and also to all the tools, such as visualisations, which make it more comprehensible. The key issues of the new discipline are scrutinized, such as objectives, subject, method and relations with other legal studies, such as legal technique. We reviewed the literature on sustainable supply chain management under big data from 2012 to 2019 and extracted 777 articles.Design/methodology/approachWe conducted quantitative analysis and data network visualization of the chosen literature, including authors, journals, countries, research institutions and citations.FindingsWe discovered that the development of this interdisciplinary field has gained increasing popularity among researchers around the world, such as China and the US publishing the most articles and Western states having more cooperation, which indicates this research topic is growing in significance globally.Originality/valueScientific and technological revolutions such as big data have been incorporated in various industries. Modern supply chain management has also been combined with the advances in data science to achieve sustainability goals. No studies have reviewed the sustainable supply chain management based on big data. This study fills this gap.

The development of these technologies is still at an early stage, which makes them an ideal candidate for proactive and anticipatory ethical reflection. This article explains the current state of neurorobotics development within the Human Brain Project, originating from a close collaboration between the scientific and technical experts who drive neurorobotics innovation, and the humanities and social sciences scholars who provide contextualising and reflective capabilities. This article discusses some of the ethical issues which can reasonably be expected. On this basis, the article explores possible gaps identified within this collaborative, ethical reflection that calls for attention to ensure that the development of neurorobotics is ethically sound and socially acceptable and desirable.

Geriatric medicine is a rapidly evolving field that addresses diagnostic, therapeutic and care aspects of older adults. Some disabilities and disorders affecting cognition (e.g. dementia), motor function (e.g. stroke, Parkinson’s disease, neuropathies), mood (e.g. depression), behavior (e.g. delirium) and chronic pain disorders are particularly frequent in old subjects. As knowledge about these age-associated conditions and disabilities is steadily increasing, the integral implementation of neurogeriatric knowledge in geriatric medicine and specific neurogeriatric research is essential to develop the field. This article discusses how neurological know-how could be integrated in academic geriatric medicine to improve care of neurogeriatric patients, to foster neurogeriatric research and training concepts and to provide innovative care concepts for geriatric patients with predominant neurological conditions and disabilities.

Learning Analytics (LA) is a systematic and interdisciplinary field that uses methods and analysis techniques to measure the effectiveness of different pedagogical approaches such as problem based learning (PBL), project based learning etc. Analysis of data helps to bring improvements in the curriculum and content delivery in higher education. According to recent predictions, for educational technology, research seeks to analyze the learners’ behavior, engagement time in learning, feedback, problem solving skills, ability to participate in team discussion. Teacher’s involvement in designing an activity, keeping the student motivated and to induce them to participate in the activity sessions is a challenging task. Students’ performance is always directly proportional to teachers’ involvement. Combining PBL and LA helps to collect data and analyze in a structured way to make decisions for an academic purpose. The benefits include targeted course offerings to the students, students’ learning outcomes, their behavior, performance, improved curriculum development, and improved personalized learning. Hence, this research enriches the application of PBL pedagogy with LA in engineering education.

The IFAC TC on “Supplemental Ways for Improving International Stability – SWIIS” is one of the longest situated in IFAC. According to first ideas during the IFAC World Congress in Kyoto 1981 this IFAC – at that time - Working Group organised in 1983 the first Workshop in this highly interdisciplinary field in Austria. Meanwhile a Technical Committee in IFAC, SWIIS was always a bridge between (control) engineers and various other disciplines to open IFAC to other related fields. It‘s a tradition to present on nearly each IFAC World Congress an update of this dynamic TC. Therefore in this contribution the role of process and manufacturing automation especially control engineering will be presented and discussed based on previous papers. Geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI) is an interdisciplinary field that has received tremendous attention from both academia and industry in recent years. This article reviews the series of GeoAI workshops held at the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) International Conference on Advances in Geographic Information Systems (SIGSPATIAL) since 2017. These workshops have provided researchers a forum to present GeoAI advances covering a wide range of topics, such as geospatial image processing, transportation modeling, public health, and digital humanities. We provide a summary of these topics and the research articles presented at the 2017, 2018, and 2019 GeoAI workshops. We conclude with a list of open research directions for this rapidly advancing field.

The University of Ottawa Healthcare Symposium (UOHS) is a one-day undergraduate health conference that aims to increase awareness of the interdisciplinary field of health. This conference engages students' interest in health through seminars, interactive panel discussions, and a research-based elevator pitch competition. UOHS was created eleven years ago by undergraduate students and has grown to become the University of Ottawa’s largest healthcare conference. Every year, UOHS hosts an event called the Pitch-O-Rama, during one of the conference’s seminar blocks. This event is an elevator pitch competition where individuals have the opportunity to present their health care-related research to an audience and panel of judges in a clear and engaging way. The goal of the Pitch-O-Rama is to have students communicate and share their scientific research to the community. The written submissions of the top 3 winners are highlighted in this abstract book.

Disability studies (DS) is an interdisciplinary field grounded in a minority studies philosophy that approaches disability as a socially constructed phenomenon. The first special issue of the American Journal of Occupational Therapy on DS was published in 2005. The present issue serves as a follow-up to highlight opportunities for and examples of DS integration into occupational therapy education, research, and practice. Studies in this special issue reflect a DS approach to research that prioritizes lived experiences, critical approaches, and participatory methodologies. Reported interventions focus on changing societal barriers rather than remediating individual impairments and acknowledge instrumental activities of daily living often neglected by traditional research. Studies on educational practices in occupational therapy have found persistent issues around negative attitudes toward disability and many opportunities to better infuse disabilities studies into curricula. Revisiting DS as it applies to occupational therapy has shown that many of the issues and considerations raised in 2005 remain in the field today. Recommendations across articles in this special issue highlight that advocacy and working for broader social change are essential for occupational therapy practitioners, given ongoing occupational injustices for people with disabilities. Infusing DS ideas into occupational therapy can promote greater alignment with priorities of disability communities and spur professional change to dismantle oppressive structures and ideologies.

This literature review article is the result of an academic activity of the Master in Professional and Technological Education (PROFEPT) of the Instituto Federal do Piauí (IFPI) in progress. Contemporary foreign language teaching has been shown to be of great importance for the development of academic and professional training in a contemporary sociocultural dynamic. Thus, this article sought to discuss the following epistemological aspects, namely: professional education and environmental education: conceptions and interrelationships; applicability of the textbook as teaching material in English language teaching contextualized in English language classes in the High school Technical Course in Environment. This academic-scientific study in terms of objective is characterized as basic research with a qualitative approach and consists of a systematic literature review. From this scientific-research, the importance of the need to integrate content and didactic materials that articulate professional training and propaedeutic training was evidenced, and that enables the student to develop creative skills of reflection and perception to be incorporated in their citizenship training and socio-environmental responsibility. It was also observed the need to build a teaching practice that addresses the theme of the environment, considering the inseparability between education and social practice to face issues related to socio-environmental issues. The aim of this study is to awaken the critical view of the professors to teaching intertwined between the disciplines, propaedeutics, English and techniques of the Environmental Technical Course. Este artículo de revisión de la literatura es el resultado de una actividad académica de la Maestría en Educación Profesional y Tecnológica (PROFEPT) del Instituto Federal de Piauí (IFPI) en curso. Se ha demostrado que la enseñanza contemporánea de lenguas extranjeras es de gran importancia para el desarrollo de la formación académica y profesional en una dinámica sociocultural contemporánea. Así, este artículo buscó discutir los siguientes aspectos epistemológicos, a saber: educación profesional y educación ambiental: concepciones e interrelaciones; Aplicabilidad del libro de texto como material didáctico en la enseñanza de la lengua inglesa contextualizada en las clases de lengua inglesa del Curso Técnico Medio en Medio Ambiente. Este estudio académico-científico en términos de objetivo se caracteriza por ser una investigación básica con enfoque cualitativo y consiste en una revisión sistemática de la literatura. A partir de esta investigación científico-científica, se evidenció la importancia de la necesidad de integrar contenidos y materiales didácticos que articulen la formación profesional y la formación propedéutica, y que permitan al estudiante desarrollar habilidades creativas de reflexión y percepción para ser incorporadas en su formación ciudadana y socio- responsabilidad ambiental. También se observó la necesidad de construir una práctica docente que aborde la temática del medio ambiente, considerando la inseparabilidad entre la educación y la práctica social para enfrentar los problemas relacionados con la problemática socioambiental. El objetivo de este estudio es despertar la visión crítica de los profesores hacia la docencia entrelazada entre las disciplinas, propedéutica, inglés y técnicas del Curso Técnico Ambiental. A partir desta pesquisa-científica, evidenciou-se a importância da necessidade de integralização de conteúdos e materiais didáticos que articule a formação profissional e a formação propedêutica, e que possibilite ao estudante o desenvolvimento de competências criativas de reflexão e percepção a serem incorporadas na sua formação-cidadã e de responsabilidade socioambiental. Observou-se ainda a necessidade da construção de uma prática docente que aborde a temática meio ambiente, considerando a indissociabilidade entre educação e prática social para o enfrentamento das questões relacionadas às problemáticas socioambientais. Pretende-se com este estudo despertar o olhar crítico docente para o ensino imbricado entre as disciplinas, propedêutica, língua inglesa e técnicas do Curso Técnico Meio Ambiente.

The use of medicines was long considered by Western schools of thought to be a a domain unique to humans; however, folklore/Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) from around the world suggests that animals have also long provided inspiration for the discovery of some medicinal plants used to treat humans and their livestock. Searching for medicinal knowledge from animals depends on the recognition of their ability to select and effectively use medicinal plants to prevent or actively ameliorate disease and other homeostatic imbalances. The interdisciplinary field of animal self-medication is providing scientific evidence for this ability in species across the animal kingdom and lends support to animal-origin medicinal plant folklore and recent ethnomedicinal information. Here, 14 case studies of purported animal-inspired plant medicines used by cultures around the world are presented together with ethnomedicinal and pharmacological evidence. Based on this evidence, the diversity and potential mode of self-medicative behaviors are considered. Over 20 animal species, including llama, sloth and jaguar in South America, reindeer and yak in Eurasia, langur and macaque in Asia, and chimpanzee, wild boar, porcupine and elephant in Africa, are linked to these case studies, representing a variety of potential preventative or therapeutic self-medicative behaviors. These examples provide an important perspective on what is likely to have been a much wider practice in the development of human traditional medicine. A role for animal self-medication research in the rejuvenation of old therapies and possible new discoveries of phytotherapies for human and livestock health is encouraged.

Indicators are increasingly needed in landscape assessment. Over recent years, a wide range of methods and assessment frameworks were developed to describe and evaluate landscape. However, landscape study is supported by several disciplines with different research targets and goals. Hence, it is not clear to what extent academic research shows interest in holistic, multidisciplinary, and integrative approaches combining a broad spectrum of indicators. To assess this, the ability to compare research outcomes through the indicators they have used provides common ground, enabling a comprehensive analysis across several fields and topic areas. Which six categories of indicators are commonly considered and combined (e.g., ecological, historical-cultural, socioeconomic, land use, environmental and perceptual), along with the leading research trends and gaps of integrative assessments is of particular interest to landscape assessment research. Relevant records were selected following a PRISMA protocol, where indicators used in the literature were identified and organised according to the six category reference framework. Only papers with at least three categories were further analysed according to the spatial and temporal context, the integration of indicators, and the primary assessment goals. Finally, a random forest model is explored to predict which variables correlate the most with integrative studies. Main research trends and gaps are also presented and discussed. Results revealed that, although the number of integrative studies has increased through time, only 14 of the 239 retrieved records (5%) consider all six categories of indicators. The most combined indicators are ecological and land use, also registering the highest increasing trend. Historical-cultural and perceptual indicators were the least mentioned (6 and 7%, respectively). Records related to planning, management and policy monitoring goals are the most successful for stimulating integration. Studies target mainly heterogeneous regions (31%), followed by urban and agricultural landscapes (16% and 14%). In conclusion, the main integration gaps pertain to the socioeconomic, perceptual, and historical categories. This review offers an innovative approach to compare indicators used by different assessment frameworks, disciplines, and topic areas. The presence of indicators from different categories enabled the operationalisation of a systematic, formal, and applicable evaluation system to a large number of articles. This simplification offers one of many possible perspectives on a very complex issue, difficult to measure and evaluate.

Groundwater is essential for drinking water provision and food production while hosting unique biodiversity and delivering key ecosystem services. However, overexploitation and contamination are prevailing threats in many regions worldwide. Even integrated governance schemes like the European Union Water Framework Directive often fail to ensure good quality and quantity conditions of groundwater bodies. Contributing factors are knowledge gaps on groundwater characteristics, limited financial, staff and land resources, as well as policy incoherencies. In this paper, we go further and argue that current groundwater challenges cannot be understood when considering the local situation within hydrologic boundaries only. New long-distance processes are at stake—so called telecouplings—that transgress watershed and administrative boundaries and significantly influence the state of local groundwater bodies. We provide three literature-based examples of European groundwater systems that are impacted by telecouplings, and we show how research and solution perspectives may change when acknowledging the de-localization of groundwater(s). We elaborate on virtual water trade, remote water supply, and seasonal tourist flows that connect sending, receiving and spillover systems. These processes can induce groundwater depletion and contamination but may also help to conserve the resource. Our hypothesis calls for a new spatial paradigm to groundwater management and highlights the need for transdisciplinary research approaches as envisioned in socio-hydrogeology.
