PurposeThe study explores the role of dialogic public communication and information quality (IQ) in evaluating the operational performance of donation-based crowdfunding (DBC) tasks. These tasks are primarily used to support disaster relief operations. The authors also test the influence of cognitive trust and swift trust as moderating variables in explaining the relationship between both IQ and dialogic communication with operational performance.Design/methodology/approachThe authors used a primary survey to test the hypotheses. A total of 203 responses were collected from multiple crowdfunding platforms. The authors used archival data from task creators on donation-based crowdfunding platforms, and a structured questionnaire is also used to collect responses. Data are analyzed using Warp PLS 6.0. Warp PLS 6.0 works on the principle of partial least square (PLS) structured equation modeling (SEM) and has been used widely to test path analytical models.FindingsThe authors found out that the operational performance is explained significantly by the quality of information and its association with dialogic public communication. The results support the arguments offered by dialogic public communication theory and trust transfer theory in assessing the operational success of DBC. The study also confirms that cognitive trust positively moderates the relationship between IQ and organizational public dialogic communication and operational performance. It is also revealed that the duration of the DBC task has no significant control over dialogic public communication.Practical implicationsThe study lays practical foundations for task creators on DBC platforms and website designers as it sets the importance of both IQ and dialogic communication channels. The communication made by the task creator and/or the DBC platforms with the donors and potential donors in the form of timely and appropriate information forms the key to the success of any DBC task. The study also helps task creators choose a suitable platform to improve performance.Originality/valueThe authors propose a unique framework by integrating two theoretical perspectives: dialogic public relation theory and trust transfer theory in understanding the operational performance of donation-based crowdfunding tasks. The authors address DBC tasks catering to disaster relief operations by collecting responses from task creators on DBC platforms. The study uniquely positions itself in the area of information and communication.

In this letter, we jointly consider the problems of blind channel estimation (BCE), channel equalization and data detection in underwater visible light communication (UVLC) systems. Specifically, we propose to solve them with a model-driven deep learning (DL) approach. Inspired by the module-based signal processing methodology and communication theory, we devise a new blind receiver architecture called blind detection network (BDNet), which consists of three modules corresponding to BCE, channel equalization, and symbol demapping, respectively. Different from existing BCE schemes, the BDNet does not directly estimate the channel itself, but instead estimates the inverse channel regardless of the scalar ambiguity issue by learning the latent channel features from the received signal only. The UVLC channel effects can then be partially compensated by the zero-forcing equalization module of BDNet. Finally, the symbol demapping module recovers the transmitted symbols with the aid of the learned decision thresholds. Simulation results show the competitive bit error rate performance of BDNet in comparison to conventional pilot-aided schemes.

Strategic communication requires the identification and understanding of target audiences for tailored communication. The Global Warming’s Six Americas analysis segments the U.S. public into six distinct, but internally consistent audiences, who each respond differently to the issue of climate change. The segments include the Alarmed, Concerned, Cautious, Disengaged, Doubtful, and Dismissive. The framework was first developed in 2008 and has been tracked twice a year using nationally representative surveys for over a decade. This research has helped advance communication theory and practice and the Six Americas framework has informed the decision making of stakeholders ranging from scientists to government officials, journalists, educators, and advocates. The framework has also been extended to assess specialized audiences (e.g. broadcast meteorologists) and other countries (e.g. India, Australia, and Germany). Future research should further develop and investigate the Six Americas within the United States, while also developing tailored segmentations and related tools for other countries.

Rather than a single theory, “action assembly theory” actually refers to a family of theoretical formulations that have in common the basic idea that message-relevant thoughts (e.g., ideational content, plans) and overt verbal and nonverbal behaviors are produced by the activation (retrieval), and subsequent assembly (integration) of elemental action specifications held in long-term memory (LTM) as components of “procedural records”—modular structures that preserve action-outcome-in-situation relationships. Also common to the various action-assembly theories is the idea that the result of the assembly process is the “output representation,” a constantly evolving configuration of action features that effectively constitutes a person’s thoughts and actions at any moment. A primary focus of the action-assembly perspective is on explicating how it is possible for people to think, say, and do things that they have never thought, heard, or done before. Other concerns are with person and situational factors bearing on speech fluency, communication-skill acquisition, sources of social-performance deficits, message planning and editing processes, cognitive processes underlying the production of deceptive messages, cross-situational consistency in message behavior, the nature of the “self,” and the nature and function of consciousness.

Mediation has various features as being a special communicational endeavour regarding to the agreement of two or more parties in a conflicted situation. Presenting these features allows to draw the conclusion that mediation is beyond simple conflict management, thus, it has independent institutional framing both theoretically and practically. This paper reflects on the Participation Theory of Communication (PTC) as a theoretical framing, although the practical implementation stands in its main focus. By presenting all application fields of mediation – family, workplace, communal (urban), peer (school), healthcare and intercultural (minority) mediation – based on the author's personal experience as practicing mediator, the specific features of the mediation process are demonstrated.

Introduction. The article is devoted to the application of communications from the standpoint of managing the processes of information and interpersonal interaction at the internal level of the organization. The main theoretical aspects of internal communications in the management system of the organization as a component of its effective functioning are investigated: the essence of the concept of "communication" is specified; the advantages and disadvantages of fixed assets of internal communications and the purposes of their formation at the enterprise are generalized; systematized barriers to an effective communication process. Purpose. Analyze the theoretical foundations of internal communications as a component of effective management in the organization, generalization of approaches to communication management and development of measures to improve communication processes. Methods.To solve the goal, general theoretical methods were used: analysis, synthesis of provisions contained in the scientific literature on the problem under study, comparison, generalization, interpretation and systematization of theoretical and empirical research. Originality.A significant contribution to the systematization of management of communication processes, determining the place of communication in the management system in organizations is devoted to the works of many domestic and foreign scientists. However, issues related to the application of communication theory from the standpoint of managing the processes of information and interpersonal interaction at the internal level of the organization remain insufficiently studied. In addition, it is necessary to update the methodological approaches and tools of communication management in view of the rapid development of information and communication technologies. Conclusion. Thus, internal communication is a system of relationships in the team built on the principles of transparency, openness, mutual respect for each employee of the organization. It is important to remember that this system creates and provides a level playing field for all employees to hear and be heard. Internal communications are a way for an organization to work with its employees and for employees to work with their organization. Effective communication between employees allows to form a loyal attitude to the organization in which they work, and to create a favorable atmosphere and emotional state of employees. Internal communications are the basis for successful management of the organization and the achievement of strategic goals, as they are one of the main mechanisms for defining, creating and disseminating the values of the institution among its employees.

We argue for an interdisciplinary approach that connects existing models and theories in Human–Robot Interaction (HRI) to traditions in communication theory. In this article, we review existing models of interpersonal communication and interaction models that have been applied and developed in the contexts of HRI and social robotics. We argue that often, symmetric models are proposed in which the human and robot agents are depicted as having similar ways of functioning (similar capabilities, components, processes). However, we argue that models of human–robot interaction or communication should be asymmetric instead. We propose an asymmetric interaction model called AMODAL-HRI (an Asymmetric MODel of ALterity in Human–Robot Interaction). This model is based on theory on joint action, common robot architectures and cognitive architectures, and Kincaid’s model of communication. On the basis of this model, we discuss key differences between humans and robots that influence human expectations regarding interacting with robots, and identify design implications.

The concept of Value of Information (VoI) has attracted significant attentions within the civil engineering community over especially the last decade. Triggered by the increasing focus on structural health monitoring, availability of data and emerging techniques of Big Data analysis and Artificial Intelligence, important insights on how to take benefit from VoI in structural integrity management have been gained. This literature review starts out with a summary of the historical developments and contains (1) a summary of two different VoI analysis origins, (2) a compilation of existing VoI analyses research and (3) current engineering interpretations and applications of VoI in the field of civil and infrastructure engineering. VoI analysis has roots in communication theory and Bayesian decision analysis in conjunction with utility theory. Starting point is thus taken in brief introduction of these theoretical foundations, followed by a discussion on the relevant modelling aspects such as information, probability and utility modelling. A detailed review of relevant existing research is presented, divided into the following main areas: computational methods, optimal sensor placement and engineering risk management. Finally, by way of conclusion and outlook, challenges and some promising directions for VoI analysis in the field of civil and infrastructure engineering are identified.

Nowadays, because the mainstream culture occupies a large number of resources in the communication field, the spread of many intangible cultural heritage has been squeezed, and batik is one of them. Guizhou batik culture, in terms of its development space, in the collision with the mainstream culture, is in a relatively disadvantaged position. However, with the accelerating process of globalization and the rapid development of information technology, we can strive to improve the translation effect by means of the combination of translation theory and communication theory, taking the 5W mode of communication as the macro guidance and "function plus loyalty" proposed by Christian Nord as the principle. The 5W mode of communication proposed by Lasswell not only summarizes communication as five important factors, but also provides new inspiration for translation scholars. Taking the translation practice of Splendid China · Guizhou Batik as an example, this paper mainly expounds the infiltration of 5W mode of communication into the translation strategy and translation skills from five factors, namely, who (author and translator), says what (communication content), in which channel (media research) and with what effect, so as to enhance the spread of batik culture in Guizhou.

Building and maintaining common ground is vital for effective collaboration in CSCW. Moreover, subtle changes in a CSCW user interface can significantly impact grounding and collaborative processes. Yet, researchers and technology designers lack tools to understand how specific user interface designs may hinder or facilitate communication grounding. In this work, we leverage the well-established theory of communication grounding to develop a visual framework, called Joint Action Storyboards (JASs), to analyze and articulate how interaction minutiae impact the costs of communication grounding. JASs can depict an integrated view of mental actions of collaborators, their physical interactions with each other and the CSCW environment, and the corresponding grounding costs incurred. We present the development of JASs and discuss its various benefits for HCI and CSCW research. Through a series of case studies, we demonstrate how JASs provide an analysis tool for researchers and technology designers and serve as a tool to articulate the impact of interaction minutiae on communication grounding.

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the impact of enterprise social media (ESM) usage on employee agility through communication quality and visibility. Theory of communication visibility is used to explore the moderating role of ESM-related strain in the relationship among communication quality, visibility and employee agility.Design/methodology/approachThe research model is analyzed using data from 240 Chinese employees of different companies. The proposed hypotheses are tested using structural equation modeling, hierarchical regression and mediation analysis.FindingsFindings suggest that ESM usage is positively related to communication quality and visibility. Communication visibility mediates the relationship between ESM usage and employee agility. ESM-related strain reduces the relationship between communication visibility and employee agility. However, ESM-related strain has an insignificant moderating effect on the relationship between communication quality and employee agility.Originality/valueThe present study examines how employee agility is associated with ESM usage in the workplace. The mediating effects of communication quality and visibility are explored using a theoretical foundation. This study provides empirical evidence on how the impact of ESM on employee agility is transmitted through communication visibility. Lastly, the current study quantifies the advantages of ESM for organizations and may motivate managers to confidently deploy ESM in the workplace.

Background: Parents of seriously ill children are at risk of psychosocial morbidity, which may be mitigated by competent family-centered communication and role-affirming conversations. Parent caregivers describe a guiding desire to do a good job in their parenting role but also depict struggling under the intense weight of parental duty. Objectives and Design: Through this case study, the Communication Theory of Identity (CTI) provides a framework for conceptualizing how palliative care teams can help parents cope with this reality. CTI views communication with care teams as formative in the development and enablement of parental perceptions of their “good parenting” role. Results: Palliative care teams may consider the four frames of identity (personal, enacted, relational, and communal) as meaningful dimensions of the parental pursuit to care well for an ill child. Conclusion: Palliative care teams may consider compassionate communication about parental roles to support the directional virtues of multilayered dynamic parental identity.

The article reviews emerging research programs and analyzes new research strategies, including media epistemological and media archeological approaches, interface semiotics, economic theory of communication between market entities, etc. The main questions of the article: how is a digital turn in culture possible, what are its preconditions and consequences that radically transform the context of life? The development of information technologies has led to the emergence of a number of research areas such as chaos theory, transformational linguistics, bioinformatics, etc. Applied theories today can already change not only basic epistemological, but also ontological concepts. Thus, the spheres of everyday existence, habitually labeled as marginal, become decisive for global political, economic and socio-cultural subjects. So, the message on social networks affects the stock markets, the behavior of computer players – on the ways of interacting with digital gadgets, and the instrumental and communication skills of our time, the network content of private video bloggers can sometimes determine the main agenda in the media. Software applications of the digital environment developed in the IT industry determine the set of tools available to the user, and with them, the ways of expressing and perceiving thoughts. The authors share the conclusion: whatever we work on, we work together with the digital mind, which in the form of Big Data, Big Five, Cyber DNA and other technologies determines our actions. The essence of the digital turn is not taken by the arsenal of pre-digital methodological attitudes that require a return to the original unity of logic, epistemology, ethics and aesthetics in an era of epistemological uncertainty. The situation becomes more complicated in connection with the declared counter-tendencies of globalization – glocalization.

Pharmacists are increasingly expected to communicate skillfully, yet few Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) curricula include theoretically-derived or evidence-based communication training. The 12 Fundamentals of Highly Effective Communicators is a pedagogical tool that we developed to teach principles of communication to two consecutive cohorts of PharmD students in their second year (P2). Students were asked to reflect on which of the 12 Fundamentals they found most helpful in their pharmacy training and practice. The most frequently selected Fundamental was “There is no ‘one size fits all’ message that will work in EVERY situation.” Students provided specific examples of how they perceived that these Fundamentals could help them have effective and appropriate interactions with patients and colleagues.

The digital land brings a new subject to debate about the most appropriate framework to guide religion expression in online settings to promote the Church tradition mission and to build a spiritual identity in a world of crisis. In the last months, there were many voices telling that Orthodox Church in Romania has a communication problem. In order to understand the process of communication of the Church in the digital era, we need to underlie this process in the psychology and sociology of communication theories. Therefore, our analysis is an attempt to better understand the challenges derived from the communication of religious subject in a context saturated by media influence over social iconology of the Church and over spiritual communion and identity. We discuss different perspectives on framing information, on the relation between the Church mission as public communicator and media agenda. Finally, we identify some positive aspects of re-thinking communication process in order to increase the Church capacity of building a powerful strategy for social messages and educating communities in the culture of Truth. Moreover, the success of moral communication means opening a dynamic pastoral program incorporating psycho-sociological aspects of communication. A teoria da comunicação está quase toda baseada em análises sobre a produção e recepção de conteúdos informacionais. Este artigo desloca o foco para uma dimensão esquecida da comunicação: a distribuição das informações. A partir de digressões acerca da história da distribuição de jornais e da análise de algumas experiências de entrega de jornais comunitários, testamos, ainda em caráter exploratório, a hipótese de que a horizontalidade na comunicação não depende das novas tecnologias da informação em si mesmas, ao contrário do que afirmam diversos autores, mas sim do modo como se valoriza a dialogia nos processos comunicativos. Em última instância, estaremos afirmando a relevância do estudo dos processos de distribuição de informações e refletindo sobre as transformações recentes na área.

The article is devoted to the general problem of effective functioning of the border department of Ukraine. On this problem, the aspects of professional interaction of border guard officers are highlighted, in particular, the issues of the formation of their communication skills. The author's team analysed a wide range of scientific works: from scientists who studied the content of communication theory to scientists from the border service, who created scientific works related to the activities and training of border guards. A study of the results of scientific work of foreign scientists from the United States, France and Germany. The purpose of the article is to analyse the problem of forming communication skills of the future border guard officers. The authors note that the requirements for cooperation in the border service are formulated in a number of important legal documents: laws, regulations and orders of different levels. The meaning of the concepts "interaction" and "communication" is analysed. Levels of manifestation of professional interaction by border guards are determined: macro-, meso- and micro-level. The content and possibilities of realization of interaction at each of its levels are revealed. The analysis of curricula and study programs of those disciplines that create opportunities for the formation of communication skills of the future officers of the border department in all specialties that are in the academy of the border service. A number of pedagogical technologies, methods and techniques that influence the formation of communication skills of border guard cadets are proposed: collaborative learning technologies, case method, role and simulation games, etc. The proposals for promising areas of further research propose the development of methods for the formation of communication skills of future border guard officers.

To increase the effectiveness of the fight against cybercrime, developed countries have begun the relevant work to increase the security of their own information and telecommunications networks of general and special purpose. Current global trends in the spread of cybercrime and the intensification of cyberattacks indicate the growing importance of combating it for the further development of society, which in turn leads to the attribution of certain groups of public relations of the cybersphere to the competence of legal regulation. The current situation with cybercrime requires constant improvement of methods of combating cybercrime, development of information systems and methods aimed at ensuring cybersecurity in the country. That is why the authors of this article developed a method for assessing cybersecurity in a special purpose information and telecommunications system. During the research, the authors used the main provisions of communication theory, queuing theory, artificial intelligence, as well as general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis. The difference between the proposed method from the known ones, which determines its novelty, is the possibility of: detection and qualitative interpretation of cyber threats; modeling scenarios of extreme situations caused by the implementation of cyber threats; assessment of risks that have the characteristics of several classes and ranking of assets of the information and telecommunications system according to the degree of their criticality; perform an assessment of the number of critically vulnerable assets of the information and telecommunications system; substantiate the composition and probability of cyber threats that can cause extreme situations in the information and telecommunications system; conducting risk assessment of their implementation in the information and telecommunications system. The practical significance of the proposed method is fatigue, that its application allows to automate the process of analysis of cyber threats and risk assessment of cybersecurity of information and telecommunications system

Extant communication theories predate the explosion of digital formats and technological advances such as virtual reality, which likely explains their predominant focus on traditional and format-level (e.g., face-to-face, email) rather than digital or characteristic-level (e.g., visual cues, synchronicity) design decisions. Firms thus lack insights into how to create and use emerging digital formats, individually or synergistically. To establish a holistic framework of bilateral multiformat communication for relationship marketing, this article reviews communication theory to establish a foundation for understanding multiformat communication and to identify any gaps (e.g., AI agents, simulated cues). The authors then review bilateral communication research in light of the identified theoretical gaps, to inform their framework. Finally, by decomposing these formats according to six fundamental characteristics, they predict how each characteristic might promote effective, efficient, and experiential communication goals, in light of distinct message, temporal, and dyadic factors. Ultimately, these combined insights reveal an overarching framework, with characteristic-level propositions grouped into five key themes, that can serve as a platform for academics and managers to develop multiformat communication theory and relationship strategies. Smartphone adalah media baru dalam hal proses komunikasi, salah satu jenis gadget ini memiliki banyak sekali manfaat yang besar dalam kehidupan. Tidak hanya digunakan untuk saling berkomunikasi, nyatanya smartphone juga memiliki fungsi yang sangat luas. Beberapa sekolah tinggi kedinasan memang mempunyai peraturan larangan Tarunanya menggunakan smartphone, tetapi Politeknik Ilmu Pemasyarakatan yang merupakan sekolah tinggi kedinasan dibawah naungan Kementerian Hukum dan Ham mempunyai aturan penggunaan smartphone untuk berkomunikasi dalam proses pembelajaran, pelatihan dan pengasuhan. Penelitian ini menggunakan satu variable independen (X) yaitu intensitas penggunaan smartphone dan satu variable dependen (Y) yaitu perilaku komunikasi. Data primer dikumpulkan melalui metode survey terhadap 100 responden dengan menggunakan pendekatan insedental sampling. Teori yang digunakan diantaranya teori komunikasi, teori new media, psikologi komunikasi dan teori ketergantungan. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa intensitas penggunaan smartphone berpengaruh signifikan terhadap perilaku komunikasi sebesar 69% dan sisanya 31% dipengaruhi oleh factor lain yang tidak terdapat dalam penelitian.

Purpose This paper aims to present an overview of the history of communication research and theory in reference services literature and to discuss the potential of one relatively recent-emerging theory of communication (anxiety-uncertainty management theory) to describe and mitigate breakdowns in reference communication. Design/methodology/approach An overview and discussion of existing literature and communication-based theories of library reference services is presented. Findings This paper identifies and describes anxiety-uncertainty management theory as a lens through which to view communication breakdowns during library reference transactions. The concepts behind the theory and articulated as well as its insights for reference librarians. Originality/value This is the first article to discuss the anxiety-uncertainty management theory to examine communication breakdowns in library reference transactions.

In a conservative pondok pesantren's (Islamic boarding school) business, its management is run and only managed by the Kyai (An expert in Islam, the Head of the pesantren). However, such conservative management makes the business go slow in growth (passive), primitive and unsuitable with the needs of the growing market. Different from other conservative ones, the business of Pondok Pesantren Al-Barakah An-Nur Khumairoh, a convenient store, is not only for Kyai or his family's benefits, but for the Pondok Pesantren activities in general, major functions of the Pesantren, teachers' welfare, and others. The research data was obtained by interview, observation and documentation methods. The theory of communication employed in this research is Juli T. Wood's theory which states that there are three aspects that can benefit from learning communication: academic, professional, and personal aspects. Other theories employed are Interpersonal communication using a circular model and the Credibility theory, which consists of three: Initial Credibility, Derivative Credibility, and Terminal Credibility. The results of this study indicate that the acts of delegating, appointing and giving trust from a Kyai to the Santri to manage the business of a Pesantren - in this case the Convenience store of Pondok Pesantren al-Barakah an-Nur Khumairoh- is very effective in teaching independence to the santri. It can also instill entrepreneurial skill to the students.

Map is an effective communication means. It carries and transmits spatial information about spatial objects and phenomena, from map makers to map users. Therefore, cartography can be regarded as a communication system. Efforts has been made on the application of Shannon Information theory developed in digital communication to cartography to establish an information theory of cartography, or simply cartographic information theory (or map information theory). There was a boom during the period from later 1960s to early 1980s. Since later 1980s, researcher have almost given up the dream of establishing the information theory of cartography because they met a bottleneck problem. That is, Shannon entropy is only able to characterize the statistical information of map symbols but not capable of characterizing the spatial configuration (patterns) of map symbols. Fortunately, break-through has been made, i.e. the building of entropy models for metric and thematic information as well as a feasible computational model for Boltzmann entropy. This paper will review the evolutional processes, examine the bottleneck problems and the solutions, and finally propose a framework for the information theory of cartography. It is expected that such a theory will become the most fundamental theory of cartography in the big data era.

The article substantiates the necessity of applying the concept of accounting strategic information space as a component of accounting scientific knowledge system. The subject of the study is the strategic management information support system. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the concept of accounting strategic information space, allocation and description of its main components based on the use of the provisions of communication theory. The methodological basis of the study was the communication theory and the concept of information space. The scientific results obtained in the article can be using to improve the theoretical foundations of accounting, as well as the practice of information support forming for the strategic management system at the enterprises. The views of researchers on the need to allocate accounting strategic information space are analyzed. The place of the accounting strategic information space in the accounting system in the context of understanding accounting as information and communication system has been determined. The definition of accounting strategic information space as a combination of various types of accounting information of a strategic direction, the sources of its occurrence, the places of its processing, storage, and transmission, which concern both the accounting and information system of a separate business unit, and individual elements of such a system, was proposed. Three main elements have been identified and substantiated as a part of accounting strategic information space: accounting strategic information resources; means of accounting strategic information infrastructure; means of accounting strategic information interaction. A deeper understanding of the requirements of the strategic management subjects to accounting and accounting information process forming has been suggested.

Modern military radio systems operate in the complex conditions of the electronic environment, due to the limited frequency range, the influence of deliberate interference and signal fading. One of the ways to improve the effectiveness of military radio communication systems is to develop indicators (methods, techniques) for evaluating the effectiveness of military radio communication systems. The analysis found that known approaches to evaluating the performance of military radio communications systems are based on the use of bit error probability in a channel, which is a rather rough indicator of channel estimation. This necessitates the development of theoretical provisions for the transmission of discrete messages to military radio systems. In order to improve the known theoretical provisions for the transmission of discrete messages of military radio communication systems, the authors of the article developed indicators for assessing the quality of functioning of military radio communication systems that operate in complex conditions of electronic conditions. In the course of the study, the authors of the research substantiated two indicators of link quality in the fading channel: the probability of correctly receiving a message of finite duration and the likelihood of a link of finite duration without breaks. The first metric is the overall metric (communication) quality of the communication, and the second metric is the quality of the channel in the session of the final duration. During the research, the authors used the basic principles of communication theory, theories of insecurity, the theory of transmission of discrete messages, etc. The proposed results can be used to evaluate the status of radio channels when they are exposed to a variety of origins and signal fading. Reliable digital communication is a primary workhorse of the modern information age. The disciplines of communication, coding, and information theories drive the innovation by designing efficient codes that allow transmissions to be robustly and efficiently decoded. Progress in near optimal codes is made by individual human ingenuity over the decades, and breakthroughs have been, befittingly, sporadic and spread over several decades. Deep learning is a part of daily life where its successes can be attributed to a lack of a (mathematical) generative model. Deep learning empirically fits neural network models to the data, and the result has been extremely potent. In yet other applications, the data is generated by a simple model and performance criterion mathematically precise and training/test samples infinitely abundant, but the space of algorithmic choices is enormous (example: chess). Deep learning has recently shown strong promise in these problems too (example: alphazero). The latter scenario is a good description of communication theory. The mathematical models underlying canonical communication channels allow one to sample an unlimited amount of data to train and test the communication algorithms ((encoder, decoder) pairs) and the metric of bit (or block) error rate allows for mathematically precise evaluation. Motivated by the successes of deep learning in mathematically well defined and extremely challenging tasks of chess, Go, and protein folding, we posit that deep learning methods can play a crucial role in solving core goals of coding theory: designing new (encoder, decoder) pairs that improve state of the art performance over canonical channel models. This manuscript surveys recent advances towards demonstrating this hypothesis, by focusing on strengthening a specific family of coding methods – sequential codes (convolutional codes) and codes that use them as basic building blocks (Turbo codes) – via deep learning methods. New state of the art results are derived on several canonical channels, including the AWGN channel with feedback.

The aim of this research was to reduce the dissimilarities in the literature regarding the use of social media platforms (SMPs) for training and its impact on students’ satisfaction and academic performance in higher education institutions. The main method of data collection for Communication Theory (CT) was a questionnaire survey. This research hypothesizes that CT applied to social media platforms for learning will affect online communication, motives to communicate, communication self-efficacy and attitude towards usethat in turn improve students’ satisfaction and students’ academic performance. The data collection questionnaire was conducted with 309 students familiar with social media platforms. Quantitative structural equation modeling was employed to analyze the results. A significant relationship was found between online communication, motives to communicate, communication self-efficacy and attitude towards usefeatures with TC for utilizing social media platforms for academic purposes that positively affected satisfaction and academic performance. Therefore, the study indicates that TC theory to use social media improve the collaborative learning of students and enable them to efficiently share knowledge, information, and discussions. We recommend that students utilize social media platforms in pursuit of their educational goals. Educators should also be persuaded to incorporate social media platforms into their classes at higher education institutions.

OBJECTIVES To explore how a metatheory composed of five dominant psychosocial theories of communication, developmental regulation, emotions, resources and social cognition, explains the beliefs, concerns and experiences, of people experiencing tooth loss. BACKGROUND Complete tooth loss is the leading cause of disability associated with oral conditions in 19 of 21 global regions, and it is among the most difficult treatment challenges in dentistry. METHODS Interviews with 18 participants were analysed inductively using interpretive description and qualitative synthesis to explain their beliefs and experiences relating to tooth loss. RESULTS Theoretical constructs from the five dominant theories constituting the metatheory explained the beliefs, concerns and experiences of the participants. For example, both before and after tooth loss they engaged in adaptive behaviours according to developmental regulation theory; implemented management strategies according to emotion theory, social cognitive theory, and resource theory; sought help from friends and dental professionals according to communication theory; and modified their physical and social activities according to social cognitive theory. CONCLUSION A metatheory synthesised from five dominant theories addressing communication, personal background, emotions, resources and social awareness, offers a comprehensive and plausible explanation of how people respond psychologically and socially to the loss of their teeth, and expands the scope of information needed to help manage their loss and subsequent treatment.

Molecular communications has recently emerged as a new form of information transfer that uses chemical signals as information carriers. Alongside their novel applications in communications theory, chemical signals may also be utilized for various other applications, such as abnormality detection, direction finding, and entity localization. Among localization tasks, current literature mainly focuses on locating active entities that emanate chemicals, whereas the localization of a silent entity (e.g., an eavesdropper) is rarely considered. Exploiting the fact that different positions of a silent entity yields different received signals at the sensing device, this letter introduces a machine learning-based approach to detect the presence of a silent entity and localize it. Overall, the study shows that such a localization task is also achievable in cases where a clear analytical formula characterizing the received signal is not available, and provides a framework for further research on silent entity localization approaches.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how some of the information and communication practices of the Tech Media and specifically of Facebook, constitute media corruption. The paper will examine what the professional role of Facebook is regarding its information/communication practices and then demonstrate that Facebook is essentially a media company and not merely a “platform,” therefore liable to the same normative responsibilities as other media companies. Design/methodology/approach Applying the dual obligation information theory (DOIT), a normative information and communication theory that applies generally to all media companies that disseminate and share information, the paper demonstrates that Facebook’s role of mediating and curating the information of its users places upon it a normative editing responsibility, to ensure both the preventive detection and corrective editing of fake news, as well as other forms of misinformation disseminated on its platform. Finally, applying a philosophical model of media corruption the paper will demonstrate that Facebook’s role in the Cambridge Analytica case was not only unethical but moreover, constituted media corruption. Findings The paper concludes that Facebook’s media corruption illustrated in the Cambridge Analytica case is not a one-off case but the result of a systemic and inherent conflict of interest between its business model of selling users’ information to advertisers and its normative media role rendering the conflict of interest between those two roles conducive to media corruption. Originality/value The paper's originality is twofold. It demonstrates that Facebook is a media company normatively accountable on the basis of an original theory the DOIT and moreover, on the basis of an original media corruption theory its actions in the Cambridge Analytica case constituted media corruption.

The influence of presumed influence hypothesis (IPI) is a communication theory accounting for the process of persuasive media effects. The present study integrates theoretical perspectives in persuasion and new and traditional media effects research to investigate the assumptions and explanatory mechanisms of IPI in an experiment. View numbers in social media directly predicted presumed exposure by others and indirectly predicted presumed influence on others, consistent with IPI and inconsistent with the bandwagon heuristic. Presumed exposure predicted presumed influence, consistent with IPI. Other predictors of presumed exposure and presumed influence were also found. Self’s evaluation of the message (realism) and engagement in the message (identification) predicted presumed exposure by others and presumed influence on others, supporting the expectation that a motivational mechanism of IPI is self-centric social perception. Social media message view numbers did not predict persuasive outcomes directly, but the evaluation of and engagement in the message did. Finally, the data were inconsistent with the assumption of pervasive mass media reach. This study provides theoretical implications for examining persuasive effects of social media messages, while enhancing and expanding IPI. Limitations of the study and directions for future research are discussed.

Background: Communication failure is reported as a cause of error in veterinary practice and has been associated with complaints and litigation. Evidence describing the types and nature of communication problems is lacking. This limits our ability to mitigate the risk poor communication poses. Methods: This study used a mixed methods approach to explore the frequency and types of communication problems present in settled cases of alleged veterinary professional negligence. Thematic analysis was conducted on written documents associated with 100 such cases involving canine patients. Interpretation was informed by human factors thinking and communication theory. Results were triangulated with findings from a focus group with the Veterinary Defence Society claims consultants and with healthcare literature on communication failures. Results: Communication problems played a contributory role in 80% of the cases examined. The analysis highlighted features of problematic communication in veterinary practice that are underrepresented in the current literature. These include the prominence of communication problems within veterinary teams, the impact of communication on the safety of care and also the interdependence of communication events with the context, system and environment in which they occur. Conclusions: These results suggest that communication is a collective competency. Effective communication is something veterinary systems, rather than individuals alone, achieve. There is a need to consider the team and organisational contexts in which communication occurs to ensure individual communication skills can be translated into communication practices that support the delivery of high-quality, safe veterinary care for the benefits of clinicians, owners and patients.

Like many other brain productions, language is a complex tool that helps individuals to communicate with each other. Many studies from computational linguistics aim to exhibit and understand the structures and content production. At present, a large list of contributions can describe and manage it with different levels of precision and applicability, but there is still a requirement for generative purposes. This paper is focused on stating the roots to understand language production from a combination of entropy and fractals. It is part of a larger work on seven rules that are intended to help build sentences automatically, in the context of dialogs with humans. As part of the scope of this paper, a set of dialogs are outlined and pre-processed. Three of the thermodynamic rules of language production are introduced and applied. Also, the communication implications and statistical evaluation are presented. From the results, a final analysis suggests that the exploration of fractals explanations of the entropy and entropy perspectives could provide a prospective insight for automatic sentence generation in natural language.

International Graduate Students (IGS) may share their journey in the United States with their accompanying families. Families tend to be the student, their spouse, and children if they have any. Those individuals who travel with the student are sometimes referred to as dependents. As they go through acculturation, both students and dependents encounter the challenge of affirming or reinventing their identities. In this study, we used the communication theory of identity (CTI) to analyze the disparate experiences of both groups. In CTI four layers constitute the concept of identity. The layers are: a) The way individuals see themselves (personal), b) their communicative interaction through social roles (relational), c) their construction of messages (enactment), and d) their role within a group or social network (communal). Thus, CTI views identity as a communicative and relational phenomenon.

Virtual design production demands that information be increasingly encoded and decoded with image compression technologies. Since the Renaissance, the discourses of language and drawing and their actuation by the classical disciplinary treatise have been fundamental to the production of knowledge within the building arts. These early forms of data compression provoke reflection on theory and technology as critical counterparts to perception and imagination unique to the discipline of architecture. This research examines the illustrated expositions of Sebastiano Serlio through the lens of artificial intelligence (AI). The mimetic powers of technological data storage and retrieval and Serlio’s coded operations of orthographic projection drawing disclose other aesthetic and formal logics for architecture and its image that exist outside human perception. Examination of aesthetic communication theory provides a conceptual dimension of how architecture and artificial intelligent systems integrate both analog and digital modes of information processing. Tools and methods are reconsidered to propose alternative AI workflows that complicate normative and predictable linear design processes. The operative model presented demonstrates how augmenting and interpreting layered generative adversarial networks drive an integrated parametric process of three-dimensionalization. Concluding remarks contemplate the role of human design agency within these emerging modes of creative digital production.

Numerical simulation has always been the most important method for predicting tropical cyclone activity and has also been widely used in tropical cyclone climate research in recent years. However, the ability of numerical models to simulate tropical cyclone activities on a climate scale is still uncertain. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the modeling of the physical process of the model and strengthen the understanding of the impact of simulated tropical cyclone activities. In this article, time information is used to study the activities of tropical cyclones. Since time information is everywhere, a large amount of time information is now generated. This paper proposes a Spark-based auxiliary catalog system for managing large amounts of time data in a distributed environment. It uses a local index structure to significantly improve the query efficiency of temporal operations. Using this technology to explore tropical cyclones in the sea can improve the accuracy of tropical cyclone activity simulation and further the research on tropical cyclone climatology. In this article, we also apply tense big data to business English cross-cultural communication and use tense big data to manage a large amount of information that exists in business English cross-cultural communication, so that researchers can use relevant information to find problems in cross-cultural communication in the company language, and then study these problems. From the perspective of cross-cultural communication theory, this helps to enhance students’ phonological awareness and improve their use of business English. This paper uses a large amount of time data as the research basis and applies it to tropical cyclones at sea and business English to promote the vigorous development of cross-cultural communication.

The article is devoted to topical issues of formation of accounting and analytical support of the enterprise, which will streamline the process of obtaining, processing, accumulating, transmitting information to comprehensively support the decision-making process. The study analyzes the main approaches to enterprise management and proposes to use logistic principles to build accounting and analytical support, which will create a single information space of accounting and analytical support, which requires reorganization of information flows. The necessity of application of the concept of accounting strategic information space as a component of the system of accounting scientific knowledge is substantiated. The subject of the research is the system of information support of strategic management. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the concept of accounting strategic information space, selection and description of its main components based on the use of the provisions of communication theory. The methodological basis of the study was chosen communication theory and the concept of information space. The scientific results obtained in the article can be used to improve the theoretical foundations of accounting, as well as to improve the practice of forming information support system of strategic management in enterprises. Researchers' views on the need to allocate accounting strategic information space are analyzed. The place of accounting strategic information space in the accounting system in the context of understanding accounting as an information and communication system is determined. It is proposed to define the accounting strategic information space as a set of different types of accounting information of strategic direction, sources of its origin, places of its processing, storage and transmission, which concerns both the accounting and information system of a separate business unit and individual elements of such system. Three main elements (accounting strategic information resources; means of accounting strategic information infrastructure; means of accounting strategic information interaction) are singled out and substantiated as a part of the accounting strategic information space. The reasons for the emergence of distinctive features of the accounting strategic information space as an accounting theoretical construct are determined.

The use of tacit knowledge has previously been shown to help expedite problem-solving procedures in the setting of medical emergency responses, as individuals can use past experiences in present and future challenges. However, there is a lack of understanding in its application in IT and socio-technical management. This paper examines the thought processes observed in Security Operational Centre (SOC) analysts facing threat events to lay the groundwork for tacit knowledge management in SOCs. Based on Sternberg's fieldwork in tacit knowledge, we conducted semi-structured interviews with ten analysts to explore the key artefacts and individual traits that aid their approach to communication, and to examine the thought processes under hypothetical incident handling scenarios. The results highlight a unanimous pursuit of Root Cause Analysis (RCA) upon the outbreak of an incident and stages of decision-making when escalating to third party support providers. Using Business Process Modelling and Notation (BPMN), we show the procedural elements of tacit knowledge from several scenarios. The results also suggest that simulation environments and physical proximity with analysts and vendors can facilitate the transfer of tacit knowledge more effectively in SOCs.

The article is devoted to the description of copywriting as one of the forms of speech communication management. Copywriting fits into the processes of text-discursive transformations and is recognized as a peculiar case of their implementation. Methodological basis of the study is philological theory of communication, which determines the change in the status and content of the categories of the communication subject, text and discourse. Interpretation of copywriting as a part of the paradigm of philological theory of communication allows one to get away from the instrumental nature of the description of managerial processes and focus on their philological genesis. The study, based on the material of the analysis of the genre of leaflets, shows the essence of the process of copywriting in a series of text-discursive transformations. The main result of the study is to consider the compression and development processes of discourse in the context of modeling text-discursive transformations. As a result, it is established that the compression and development are carried out by the position of the subject of communication, who organizes the dynamics of the development of discursive semantics at the text level.
