Summary Background The use of magnetically controlled capsules for gastroscopy is in the early stages of clinical adoption. We aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a fully automated magnetically controlled capsule endoscopy (FAMCE) system in clinical practice for gastroscopy and small bowel examination. Methods We did a prospective, comparative study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of FAMCE. Patients from two hospitals in Chongqing, China were consecutively enrolled. Eligible participants were aged 18–80 years with suspected gastric pathology and no previous surgery. Participants underwent FAMCE for screening of gastric lesions, then conventional transoral gastroscopy 2 h later, and stomach examination results were compared. The primary outcome was the rate of complete detection of gastric anatomy landmarks (cardia, fundus, body, angulus, antrum, and pylorus) by FAMCE. Secondary outcomes were the time required for gastric completion by FAMCE, the rate of detection of gastric lesions by FAMCE compared with conventional transoral gastroscopy, and the rate of complete small bowel examination. Adverse events were also evaluated. The study was registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, ChiCTR2000040507. Findings Between May 12 and Aug 17, 2020, 114 patients (mean age 44·0 years [IQR 34·0–55·0]; 63 [55%] female) were enrolled. The rate of complete detection of gastric anatomical structures by FAMCE was 100% (95% CI 99·3–100·0). The concordance between FAMCE and conventional transoral gastroscopy was 99·61% (99·45–99·78). The mean completion time of a gastroscopy with FAMCE was 19·17 min (SD 1·43; median 19·00, IQR 19·00–20·00), compared with 5·21 min (2·00; 5·18, 3·68–6·45) for conventional transoral gastroscopy. In 114 enrolled patients, 214 lesions were detected by FAMCE and conventional transoral gastroscopy. Of those, 193 were detected by both modalities. FAMCE missed five pathologies (four cases of gastritis and one polyp), whereas conventional transoral gastroscopy missed 16 pathologies (12 cases of gastritis, one polyp, one fundal xanthoma, and two antral erosions). FAMCE was able to provide a complete small bowel examination for all 114 patients and detected intestinal lesions in 50 (44%) patients. During the study, two (2%) patients experienced adverse events. No serious adverse events were recorded, and there was no evidence of capsule retention. Interpretation The performance of FAMCE is similar to conventional transoral gastroscopy in completion of gastric examination and lesion detection. Furthermore, it can provide a complete small bowel examination. Therefore, FAMCE could be effective method for examination of the gastrointestinal tract. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most malignant tumour worldwide, with high mortality and recurrence. Chemoresistance is one of the main factors leading to metastasis and poor prognosis in advanced CRC patients. By analysing the Gene Expression Omnibus data set, we found higher hexokinase 2 (HK2) expression levels in patients with metastatic CRC than in those with primary CRC. Moreover, we observed higher enrichment in oxaliplatin resistance‐related gene sets in metastatic CRC than in primary CRC. However, the underlying relationship has not yet been elucidated. In our study, HK2 expression was significantly elevated in CRC patients. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) revealed multi‐drug resistance and epithelial‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) pathways related to high HK2 expression. Our results showed that knockdown of HK2 significantly inhibited vimentin and Twist1 expression and promoted TJP1 and E‐cadherin expression in CRC cells. Additionally, transcriptional and enzymatic inhibition of HK2 by 3‐bromopyruvate (3‐bp) impaired oxaliplatin resistance in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, HK2 interacts with and stabilized Twist1 by preventing its ubiquitin‐mediated degradation, which is related to oxaliplatin resistance, in CRC cells. Overexpression of Twist1 reduced the apoptosis rate by HK2 knockdown in CRC cells. Collectively, we discovered that HK2 is a crucial regulator that mediates oxaliplatin resistance through Twist1. These findings identify HK2 and Twist1 as promising drug targets for CRC chemoresistance.

This study aimed to examine changes in levels of cytokine and T cell surface molecules in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients receiving sequential interferon therapy following 1-year nucleos(t)ide analogs (NAs) treatment. Cytokine levels were measured in 30 patients, and T cell surface molecule expression was measured in 48 patients receiving sequential interferon therapy and 24 patients only receiving NA mono-therapy. An HBsAg titer of0.05 IU/ml was defined as a "functional cure." In the cured group (HBsAg 0.05 IU/ml), a decreasing probability was observed in IFN-γ (after Week 0), and IL-22 and IP-10 (after Week 12). In the non-cured group (HBsAg ≥ 0.05 IU/ml), a probability of slightly decreasing was observed for IFN-γ (after Week 12), and a probability of increasing IP-10 concentration (after Week 0) was observed. Generalized estimating equation (GEE) analyses showed significant differences in the levels of IL-10, IL-23, CCL-3, IL-1β, IL-2, and IL-12P70 between the two groups. Background Leiomyoma of the uterus is relatively common, but uterine leiomyoma of the greater omentum is rare. Case summary Here, we report the case of a 22-year-old woman who presented with a 3 mo history of progressive abdominal distension and a hypervascular abdominopelvic mass. Due to a high serum concentration of CA125, the preoperative diagnosis was unclear. During surgery, 5 L of ascites was removed. An 18.8 cm solid mass, which was pedunculated from the uterine fundus and exhibited complex adhesion to the greater omentum, was removed. The CA125 level was reduced postoperatively, and a pathologic study confirmed that the mass was a leiomyoma that originated in the uterus. Conclusion Uterine leiomyoma can share vessels with the greater omentum. This case highlights the difficulty of diagnosing pseudo-Meigs syndrome and the importance of imaging and laboratory examinations.

Sleep disorders in patients with end-stage renal disease are common but have rarely been reported in previous studies. Therefore, we examined the prevalence of sleep disorders and the risk factors for declining sleep quality in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). A multicenter prospective cohort study was conducted at five PD centers across different provinces in China. A total of 449 patients who underwent PD between March to November 2013 were enrolled. Demographic data, laboratory indicators, presence of depression, and sleep assessment data were collected. Sleep questionnaires reflecting five categories of sleep disorders, namely, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, excessive daytime sleepiness, possible narcolepsy, and sleepwalking and nightmares, were administered at baseline and at 24 months postoperatively. Sleep disorders were diagnosed when a patient had at least one sleep problem. At baseline, 335 (74.6%) patients had at least one type of sleep disorder. Depression, diabetes mellitus (DM), and male were found to be associated with the presence of a sleep disorder. At follow-up, the prevalence of insomnia, restless legs syndrome, and excessive daytime sleepiness had significantly increased in 285 patients. Furthermore, cardiovascular disease (CVD) was found to be associated with the presence of sleep disorders in patients with one or more disorders at baseline, whereas a low serum albumin level was found to be associated with sleep disorders in patients without any sleep disorders at baseline. The prevalence of sleep disorders was relatively high among PD patients at baseline and increased afterthe2-year follow-up. Depression, DM, and male were associated with all sleep disorders at baseline. CVD was associated with the presence of a sleep disorder at baseline and worse sleep quality at the 2-year follow-up; whereas a low serum albumin level was associated with the risk of acquiring a sleep disorder at the 2-year follow-up among patients with normal sleep status at baseline.

In order to make a preliminary prediction of flavor and retention index (RI) for compounds in beer, this work applied the machine learning method to modeling depending on molecular structure. Towards this goal, the flavor compounds in beer from existing literature were collected. The database was classified into four groups as aromatic, bitter, sulfury, and others. The RI values on a non-polar SE-30 column and a polar Carbowax 20M column from the National Institute of Standards Technology (NIST) were investigated. The structures were converted to molecular descriptors calculated by molecular operating environment (MOE), ChemoPy and Mordred, respectively. By combining the pretreatment of the descriptors, machine learning models, including support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF) and k-nearest neighbour (kNN) were utilized for beer flavor models. Principal component regression (PCR), random forest regression (RFR) and partial least squares (PLS) regression were employed to predict the RI. The accuracy of the test set was obtained by SVM, RF, and kNN. Among them, the combination of descriptors calculated by Mordred and RF model afforded the highest accuracy of 0.686. R2 of the optimal regression model achieved 0.96. The results indicated that the models can be used to predict the flavor of a specific compound in beer and its RI value.

Diabetic neuropathic pain (DNP) is a troublesome diabetes complication all over the world. P2X3 receptor (P2X3R), a purinergic receptor from dorsal root ganglion (DRG), has important roles in neuropathic pain pathology and nociceptive sensations. Here, we investigated the involvement of DRG P2X3R and the effect of 2 Hz electroacupuncture (EA) on DNP. We monitored the rats’ body weight, fasting blood glucose level, paw withdrawal thresholds, and paw withdrawal latency, and evaluated P2X3R expression in DRG. We found that P2X3R expression is upregulated on DNP, while 2 Hz EA is analgesic against DNP and suppresses P2X3R expression in DRG. To evaluate P2X3R involvement in pain modulation, we then treated the animals with A317491, a P2X3R specific antagonist, or α β-me ATP, a P2X3R agonist. We found that A317491 alleviates hyperalgesia, while α β-me ATP blocks EA’s analgesic effects. Our findings indicated that 2 Hz EA alleviates DNP, possibly by suppressing P2X3R upregulation in DRG.

To evaluate the efficacy of trabeculo-canalectomy in treating glaucoma patients, a retrospective investigation of 53 glaucoma patients (53 eyes) who underwent trabeculo-canalectomy was conducted at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, China, from April 2017 to January 2019. Intraocular pressure (IOP), visual acuity, surgical success rates, medications, and complications were monitored at post-operative 1 day, 1 week, 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 months. The novel Coronavirus, COVID-19, is highly infectious is mainly transmitted from an infected person through liquid droplets. Most patients have a good prognosis, a few patients are in critical condition. Children’s infections are relatively mild, without fever and pneumonia and since they have the characteristics of clustering onset, they are easy to miss diagnosis and are thus more likely to cause disease transmission. Children with inflammatory bowel disease need to travel to and from the hospital multiple times to receive treatments due to this disease’s own characteristics, which in turn increases their risk of infection. Therefore, management recommendations for children with inflammatory bowel disease through a network platform during the pandemic of COVID-19 infection are proposed.

BACKGROUND Betulinic acid (BA) is a lupine pentacyclic triterpene compound derived from the bark of the white mulberry tree, which has a variety of pharmacological properties. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of BA combined with cisplatin on the proliferation, stemness, pyroptosis, and xenograft growth of esophageal carcinoma cells in a nude mouse xenograft model. METHODS The cell survival rate was detected by CCK-8 method. TE-11 cells were treated with 3μM of BA and 15 μM of cisplatin. The cells were randomly divided into four groups: the control group, the BA group, the cisplatin group, and the BA + Cisplatin group. Western blotting was used to detect the expression levels of Ki67, PCNA, SOX2, OCT4, ASC, and Caspase-1. The xenograft model of nude mice was constructed to detect tumor volume, and the positive expression rates of Ki67 and Caspase-1 were detected by immunohistochemistry. Aluminum honeycomb has been used widely on the spacecraft, as it has high strength mass ratio and good designability. In order to reduce the channel effect of honeycomb core, the multiple “Y” structures are proposed as the stuffing of the sandwich structure and the bracing structure of fabric layer respectively, and the compression tests are finished. The congregating effect of the “Y” structures on the debris cloud is validated by the hypervelocity impact test. The projectile diameter is 5 mm, and the impact velocities range from 3.9 km/s to 4.3 km/s. According to the test results, the “Y” structures adhered on the plate have certain stability and could play the bracing role, and they can reduce even eliminate the congregating effect on the debris cloud, however, their yield strength is lower compared with the aluminum honeycomb structure of equivalent areal density, which could be solved by structure optimum. The study results provide reference for improving the honeycomb structure used on spacecraft shield.

Background Information on possible donor-derived transmission events in China is limited. We evaluated the impacts of liver transplantation from infected deceased-donors, analyzed possible donor-derived bacterial or fungal infection events in recipients, and evaluated the etiologic agents’ characteristics and cases outcomes. Methods A single-center observational study was performed from January 2015 to March 2017 to retrospectively collect data from deceased-donors diagnosed with infection. Clinical data were recorded for each culture-positive donor and the matched liver recipient. The microorganisms were isolated and identified, and antibiotic sensitivity testing was performed. The pathogens distribution and incidence of possible donor-derived infection (P-DDI) events were analyzed and evaluated. Results Information from 211 donors was collected. Of these, 82 donors were infected and classified as the donation after brain death category. Overall, 149 and 138 pathogens were isolated from 82 infected donors and 82 matched liver recipients, respectively. Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and fungi accounted for 42.3% (63 of 149), 46.3% (69 of 149), and 11.4% (17 of 149) of pathogens in infected donors. The incidence of multidrug-resistant bacteria was high and Acinetobacter baumannii was the most concerning species. Infections occurred within the first 2 weeks after liver transplantation with an organ from an infected donor. Compared with the noninfection recipient group, the infection recipient group experienced a longer mechanical ventilation time (P = .004) and intensive care unit stay (P = .003), a higher incidence of renal dysfunction (P = .026) and renal replacement therapy (P = .001), and higher hospital mortality (P = .015). Possible donor-derived infection was observed in 14.6% of cases. Recipients with acute-on-chronic liver failure were more prone to have P-DDI than recipients with other diseases (P = .007; odds ratio = 0.114; 95% confidence interval, .025–.529). Conclusions When a liver recipient receives a graft from an infected deceased-donor, the postoperative incidence of infection is high and the infection interval is short. In addition, when a possible donor-derived, drug-resistant bacterial infection occurs, recipients may have serious complications and poor outcomes.

The problem of single image rain removal has attracted tremendous attention as the blurry images caused by rain streaks can degrade the performance of many computer vision algorithms. Although deep learning based de-raining methods have achieved a significant success, there are still unresolved issues in terms of the performance. In this work, we propose a novel recurrent attention dense network (RADN) for single image de-raining. In RADN, a region-level attention module is first utilized to identify rain streaks regions for the subsequent removal task. As rain streaks have different sizes and shapes, a modified densely connected convolutional network (DenseNet) with dilation convolutions and reduced channels is developed for an effective feature representation. The rain streaks are removed stage by stage and a Gate Recurrent Unit (GRU) is incorporated to deliver useful information from previous stages to later stages for a better performance. Qualitative and quantitative evaluations on both synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed approach can achieve a remarkable performance in comparison with the state-of-the-art methods for single image rain removal.

Peritoneal lymphomatosis is extremely rare and associated with poor prognosis. Most practitioners only pay more attention to peritoneal carcinomatosis. However, peritoneal lymphomatosis can be neglected and misdiagnosed. We report a teenager with 10 days of abdominal distension and pain accompanied by computed tomography scan suggesting diffuse thickening of the peritoneum and omentum and abdominopelvic effusion. Tuberculous peritonitis and peritoneal carcinomatosis were initially suspected. However, it was finally confirmed as non-Hodgkin’s B-cell lymphoma by omentum biopsies. He achieved complete remission after chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation. But unfortunately, he suffered a relapse and died 10 months after diagnosis. Following a review of the literature, it can be concluded that the discovery of lymphomatosis in peritoneum is a rare finding. Lymphoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of unexplained peritoneal thickening on computed tomography, and this case emphasizes the importance of early pathological diagnosis to make sure that the right treatment can be started opportunely.

Background: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a gastrointestinal disorder associated with epigastric pain and fullness, with symptoms such as anxiety and depression. Electroacupuncture (EA) has emerged as a potential therapeutic strategy to treat FD via electrical stimulation at specific acupoints of the body and has previously been demonstrated to be effective in promoting gastric motility and attenuating the symptoms of FD. However, the mechanisms underlying the effect of EA remain elusive.Results: Herein, we constructed an in vivo model of FD in rats and performed EA on FD-induced rats. Preliminary bioinformatic analysis through RNA sequencing revealed that differentially expressed microRNAs exist between non-treated and EA-treated rats subjected to EA. Among them, miR-221-3p was associated with the target gene c-kit, the expression of which is closely linked to interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) and gap junction intercellular communication, factors critically implicated in gastrointestinal motility. We further proved that miR-221-3p overexpression aggravated FD, but EA downregulated miR-221-3p to alleviate the symptoms of FD. The mechanisms of action underlying the effect of EA involve an increase in c-kit+ ICCs, upregulation of stem cell factor and connexin 43, and enhanced Raf/Erk signaling.Conclusions: Our findings suggest that EA is an effective method of managing FD by regulating miR-221-3p, the c-kit/stem cell factor axis, and Raf/Erk signaling, reinforcing the strong role of gap junction intercellular communication in gastrointestinal motility.

Aerogel has been widely known as a low-density and highly porous material and is closely connected with the complex processing methods, such as freeze-drying or supercritical drying. In this work, using the polymerization-induced aramid nanofiber (PANF) as a building block, we put forward a modified freezing-drying method for the high-efficiency preparation of all-para-aromatic-amide aerogels. In the preparation process, PANF hydrogel is first frozen at -18 °C and then dried at 20-150 °C for the formation of PANF aerogel. The PANF framework formed during the freezing process is crucial for the formation of the PANF aerogel. Moreover, the space-occupying effect of ice crystals is also helpful for the formation of the macroscopic pore structure in the aerogel. Aerogels with large size or well-controlled shape could be successfully obtained by this method. Through the variation of PANF concentration in the hydrogel and drying temperature, aerogels with different densities (20-185 mg/cm3) could be achieved, and the lowest density is reached at 150 °C, with the PANF concentration of 0.7%. The low-density PANF aerogels show high specific compressive strengths and low thermal conductivities, which are comparable to those resulting from the freeze-drying or supercritical drying method. Furthermore, the shrinkage phenomenon in the drying process could be skillfully utilized for the preparation of PANF aerogel-coated objects. The PANF aerogels could be applied as a thermal insulating material or shock absorption material in practical applications.

With the developments of Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud-computing technologies, cloud servers need storage of a huge volume of IoT data with high throughput and robust security. Joint Compression and Encryption (JCAE) scheme based on Huffman algorithm has been regarded as a promising technology to enhance the data storage method. Existing JCAE schemes still have the following limitations: (1) The keys in the JCAE would be cracked by physical and cloning attacks, (2) The rebuilding of Huffman tree reduces the operational efficiency, (3) The compression ratio should be further improved. In this paper, a Huffman-based JCAE scheme using Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs) is proposed. It provides physically secure keys with PUFs, efficient Huffman tree mutation without rebuilding, and practical compression ratio by combining the Lempel-Ziv and Welch (LZW) algorithm. The performance of the instanced PUFs and the derived keys was evaluated. Moreover, our scheme was demonstrated in a file protection system with the average throughput of 473Mbps and the average compression ratio of 0.5586. Finally, the security analysis shows that our scheme resists physical and cloning attacks as well as several classic attacks, thus improving the security level of existing data protection methods.

The authentication of Internet of Things (IoT) devices based on the Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) is widely adopted in the information security domain. However, the leakage of PUF responses in an authentication system reduces its privacy and security. To improve its security, we can utilize the Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) algorithm with different key lengths to encrypt the PUF response arbitrarily. Point multiplication is the most time-consuming operation in ECC because of its complex calculation process, which seriously affects the efficiency of the PUF response encryption. In order to solve this problem, a point multiplier based on binary field with reconfigurable key lengths of 233, 283, 409 and 571 is designed in this paper. In our method, by reusing the underlying computing units, the resources needed for point multiplication are effectively reduced. What it is more innovative is that double point multiplication operations with a key length of less than 283 bits can be performed simultaneously in the elaborate designed point multiplication circuit, which can effectively speed up the encryption process of ECC. The circuit is implemented on Xilinx Virtex-6 FPGA. The experiment results show the single point multiplication times of 233, 283, 409 and 571 key lengths are 19.33, 22.36, 41.36 and 56.5 μs, respectively, under the clock frequency of 135 MHz. In addition, it only needs 19.33 μs to perform two-point multiplication operations when the key length is 233 bits at the same time. When the key length is 283 bits, the point multiplication operation can be performed twice in 22.36 μs.

Amblyopia greatly affects the physical and mental development of children. Acupuncture is effective for amblyopia, though its mechanism remains unclear. This article summarized the mechanism of acupuncture treatment of amblyopia from the perspectives of morphology of neurons in visual cortex, visual electrophysiology, and molecular biology, etc. It was found that acupuncture may treat amblyopia through repairing the morphological and ultrastructural damages of neurons in visual cortex, promoting the electrical activities in visual pathway and visual cortical neurons, and modulating the synthesis and expression levels of factors involved in visual system. Nevertheless, further studies are required to unveil the mechanism of acupuncture treatment of amblyopia.

Background: Chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO) is a mitochondrial encephalomyopathy caused by multiple mtDNA abnormalities. There is little information about the changes of ocular fundus with CPEO. The aim of this work was to measure and evaluate changes in the macular retinal thickness and optic nerve head in patients with CPEO using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography and to compare the findings with those of healthy individuals. Methods: Totally, 18 CPEO patients were enrolled in this study. Healthy volunteers matched for gender, age, and diopter settings were included as a control group. The retinal thickness of macular central fovea, inner and outer retinal layer thickness of perifoveal macular, optic nerve head parameters, and peripapillay retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (pRNFLT) for all included cases were measured using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. A paired t test was used to compare the differences in the studied parameters between the two groups. The correlations between macular retinal thickness, pRNFLT, disease duration, and age of onset were also analyzed. Results: Among the macular parameters, retinal thickness of macular central fovea (t = -2.135, P < 0.05) and outer retinal layer thickness (t = -1.994, P < 0.05) of patients in the CPEO group were statistically significant lower than those of patients in the normal control group. For the optic nerve head parameters, the patients in the CPEO group showed a larger rim volume (t = -2.499, P < 0.05) and nerve head volume (t = -2.103, P < 0.05). The overall pRNFLT of patients in the CPEO group was statistically significant lower than that of patients in the control group (t = -4.125, P < 0.05). The comparison of pRNFLT in eight sectors showed that the pRNFLT of patients in the CPEO group was statistically significant lower than that of the control group mainly in the inferior and temporal sectors. The degree of pRNFL defect negatively correlated with the disease duration (r = -0.583, P < 0.05). Conclusions: The retinal thickness of patients with CPEO was significantly thinner, which was mostly the outer retina. The patients’ optic discs had a low volume and the loss of the retinal nerve fiber layer was obvious. With the extension of the disease duration, the retinal nerve fiber layer defect was even more significant. Background Research on the association between cognitive impairment (CI) and peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis is limited. Therefore, we investigated whether CI contributed to the risk of PD-related peritonitis. Methods This prospective cohort study enrolled 458 patients from 5 PD centers between 1 March 2013, and 30 November 2013, and continued until 31 May 2016. We used the Modified Mini- Mental State Examination (3MS) to assess general cognition, the Trail-Making Test to assess executive function, and subtests of the Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status to assess immediate and delayed memory, visuospatial skills, and language ability. Patients were assigned to CI and non-CI groups based on their 3MS scores. The first episode of peritonitis was the primary endpoint event. Treatment failure of peritonitis was defined as peritonitis-associated death or transfer to hemodialysis. We used competing risk models to analyze the association between CI and the risk of peritonitis. The association of CI with treatment failure after peritonitis was analyzed using logistic regression models. Results Ninety-four first episodes of peritonitis were recorded during a median follow-up of 31.4 months, 18.1% of which led to treatment failure. No significant group differences were observed for the occurrence, distribution of pathogenic bacteria, or outcomes of first-episode peritonitis. Immediate memory dysfunction was independently associated with a higher risk of PD-related peritonitis (hazard ratio [HR] 1.736, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.064 – 2.834, p < 0.05), adjusting for confounders. Conclusions Immediate memory dysfunction was a significant, independent predictor of PD-related peritonitis. Neither general nor specific domains of CI predicted treatment failure of peritonitis.

BACKGROUND Cerebellar fastigial nucleus electrical stimulation (FNS) in rats has been shown to protect against brain ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) damage. Activation of telomerase has been reported to provide neuroprotection in animal models of stroke. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to explore whether precondition FNS increases the expression of telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) and telomerase activity in rats after cerebral I/R injury. METHODS One day after continuous stimulation of the fastigial cerebellar nucleus for 1 h, adult male Sprague Dawley rats were subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) for 2 h and reperfusion for 24 h, 48 h and 72 h, while the I/R control groups received the same treatment without FNS. Ischemic lesion volumes were measured following TTC staining. The number of apoptotic cells was measured by using TUNEL assays. Subsequently, telomerase activity was examined by using TRAP-silver staining. Additionally, the expression level of TERT mRNA was assessed by using real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR. Finally, the expression of TERT protein was measured by using Western blotting. RESULTS The results of our study demonstrated that FNS significantly decreased infarct volumes and improved neurological deficits when compared with the I/R control group. To retrospectively evaluate the value of MR features based on Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS ver.2017) for identifying the status of cytokeratin (CK) 19 expression of HCC before surgery.A total of 201 patients with 207 HCCs who underwent MR imaging were reviewed retrospectively. MR features based on LI-RADS ver.2017 as well as clinical data were compared between CK19-positive (n = 51) and CK19-negative (n = 156) HCCs groups. Potential predictive parameters were identified by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis and diagnostic odds ratios (ORs) were recorded.MR features including targetoid appearance (p = 0.001) was more frequently observed while non-peripheral "washout" (p 0.0001) and non-rim arterial phase hyper-enhancement (p 0.0001) were found less frequently in CK19-positive HCCs compared to CK19-negative HCCs. At multivariate analysis, serum alphafetoprotein (AFP)20 ng/ml (OR = 5.9) and targetoid appearance (OR = 4.2) and non-peripheral "washout" (OR = 0.2) were significant independent predictors of CK19-positive HCCs.Targetoid appearance and absence non-peripheral "washout" combined with elevated AFP were useful for differentiating CK19-positive HCCs from CK19-negative HCC.

To explore whether volumetric acquisition of histogram analysis of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps could quantify liver fibrosis stages. 84 patients underwent MRI exams including DWI before surgery or liver biopsy were included. Histogram analysis of whole liver ADC maps were performed and parameters including ADC mean, ADC median, ADC skewness, ADC kurtosis, ADC standard deviation (SD), ADC 5th, 10th, 25th, 75th, 90th and 95th percentiles were calculated. The correlations between different histopathologic grades and histogram analysis parameters were determined. For the significant parameters, receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analyses were further established to evaluate the potential diagnostic performance for differentiating liver fibrosis stages. The ADC mean and ADC median, ADC SD, ADC5th, 10th, 25th, 75th, 90th and 95th percentile were significantly lower with the increasing grade of liver fibrosis (rho: from − 0.580 to − 0.230). ADC skewness and ADC kurtosis were significantly higher with the increasing grade of liver fibrosis (rho: 0.243, 0.347, respectively). Areas under the ROC curve (AUC) of ADC mean and ADC 75th percentile for identification liver fibrosis (F1–F4), moderate to advanced liver fibrosis (F2–F4), advanced liver fibrosis (F3–F4), cirrhosis (F4) were 0.87, 0.83, 0.82, 0.76 and 0.88, 0.82, 0.80, 0.74, respectively. Histogram analysis of volumetric acquisition of liver ADC maps has a potential value for quantifying liver fibrosis grades.

Objective We assessed the correlation between serum carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Methods We collected 518 CAD patients from the cardiovascular disease center in our hospital, and all cIMT values were measured in patients with CAD. Results The serum CA125 concentrations were found to be increased in CAD patients with early carotid atherosclerosis compared with patients without early carotid atherosclerosis (20.1±7.72 vs. 17.7±6.41 U/mL, p Conclusions We found that serum CA125 concentrations were positively correlated with cIMT in CAD patients, serum CA125 might be a potential biochemical marker for the estimation of atherosclerosis in patients with CAD.

Rationale & Objective Cognitive impairment is an independent predictor of technique failure and mortality in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) therapy. We investigated changes in cognitive function and factors associated with it in this population. Study Design Multicenter prospective cohort study. Setting & Participants 458 PD patients were enrolled and followed up for 2 years. Predictors Global and specific domains of cognitive function were measured at baseline and after 2 years. The Modified Mini-Mental State Examination (3MS) was used for assessment of global cognitive function; Trail-Making Tests A and B, for executive function; and subtests of the Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status, for immediate and delayed memory, visuospatial skill, and language ability. Outcomes The primary outcome was change in cognitive function. Secondary outcomes included all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, hospitalization, and transition to hemodialysis therapy. Analytical Approach Multivariable linear regression models. Results The prevalence of cognitive impairment increased from 19.8% to 23.9%. 3MS scores significantly decreased (84.8 to 83.1), although executive function, immediate memory, and visuospatial skill improved over time. Delayed memory capacity and language ability were unchanged. Lower serum albumin level was associated with deteriorated delayed memory, visuospatial skill, and language ability, as well as with the decline in general cognitive function (β values of 0.64, 0.90, 0.80, and 0.44, respectively). Advanced age, lower education, and depression were also correlated with deterioration in general and specific cognitive function. After multivariable adjustment, both global and specific cognitive impairment at baseline were associated with a greater rate of hospitalization, and memory dysfunction was associated with a lower dialysis modality survival rate. Limitations A relatively short observation period, small number of deaths, and potential selection bias due to patients unavailable for the second assessment. Conclusions In a PD population, global cognitive function declined over 2 years, though some specific cognitive domains improved. Besides well-recognized factors, hypoalbuminemia and depression were also risk factors for cognitive impairment.

Hemiplegic gait is the most common sequela of stroke. Patients with hemiplegic gait are at a risk of falling because of poor balance. The theory of cognitive-motor networks paved the way for a new field of research. However, the mechanism of the relationship of cognition with gait or posture control networks is unclear because of the dynamic characteristics of walking and changing postures. To explore differences in the balance function and fall risk between patients with and without cognitive impairment after stroke, we utilized the Berg balance scale, Timed “Up and Go” test, and 10 m walking test. Patients were divided into two groups: the observation group (16 patients, female 6 and male 10), comprising patients with cognitive impairment after stroke, and the control group (16 patients, female 7 and male 9), comprising patients without cognitive impairment after stroke. We found that patients with cognitive impairment had worse balance function and a higher risk of falls. They needed a longer time to turn around or sit down. Our findings indicated that posture control in turning around and sitting down required more cognitive resources in daily life.

Based on the structure of hybrid encryption algorithm, this paper proposes an area-saving hybrid AES-RSA encryption module which can be integrated into network processing unit system. In the implementation of the algorithm, combined with the advantages of reconfigurable technology and traditional algorithms, the reconfigurable computing module which is compatible with the two algorithms is designed. At the same time, an application specific control unit is designed in the periphery, which balances the core area and the usability and flexibility of the algorithm core. The synthesis result based on SMIC 0.13um technology library shows the designed circuit can run at 200 MHz clock within the area of 163.7 thousand gates. According to the test report, the throughput of AES encryption and decryption can reach 2.1Gbps, and the throughput of RSA encryption and decryption can reach 107.2Kbps.

Background It is unclear whether the therapeutic effect of warfarin in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and normal liver function differs between those with and without nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). With this in mind, we aimed to evaluate the impact of NAFLD on the international normalized ratio (INR) control in warfarin-treated AF patients with normal liver function. Methods We enrolled 600 AF patients aged 28-94 (median 68) with normal liver function who were receiving daily warfarin therapy, 172 with NAFLD and 428 without. The INR and INR/warfarin dosage rate were measured. Four nested multivariable linear regression models adjusted for potential confounders were used to assess whether there were differences in INR and INR/warfarin dose rate between patients with and without NAFLD. Results The INR, the percentage of patients with INR within the target range of 2.0-3.0, and the INR/warfarin dose rate were lower in patients with NAFLD than those without. In the maximally adjusted multivariable linear regression models, the INR in NAFLD patients (0.22±0.07, P=0.003) was lower than in non-NAFLD patients, and the INR/warfarin dose rate was slightly lower (0.09±0.06, P=0.10) in NAFLD than in non-NAFLD patients. Conclusions Our findings suggest that among AF patients, the therapeutic effect of warfarin is impaired in patients who have NAFLD. Therefore, a slightly higher or personally optimized dosage of warfarin might be necessary among AF patients with NAFLD in order to achieve the INR target range.

Serum microRNAs (miRNAs) have been implicated as noninvasive biomarkers for lung cancer diagnosis. However, there are no sensitive and specific biomarkers for the detection of radiotherapy-related non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) metastasis. The present study aimed to investigate the role of three serum miRNAs, namely miRNA (miR)-130a, miR-25 and miR-191*, in diagnosing NSCLC, and their biological functions in radiation-mediated development of metastatic properties in A549 cells. To determine this, serum samples were collected from 84 patients with NSCLC and 42 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Differential expression of serum miRNAs was analyzed by quantitative PCR. Significant associations between miRNA expression and overall survival of patients with NSCLC were identified using the Cox proportional regression model. A receiver operating characteristic curve was generated to evaluate diagnostic accuracy. The functions of miR-130a, miR-25 and miR-191* in lung cancer cells were studied by transfecting A549 cells with miRNA mimics and inhibitors. The results of the present study demonstrated that the expression levels of miR-130a, miR-25 and miR-191* in the serum of patients with NSCLC were increased compared with those in healthy controls, and these increases were associated with advanced age (≥60 years), radiotherapy, histological type (squamous carcinoma), low survival rate and low median survival time. Additionally, irradiation induced the upregulation of miR-130a, miR-25 and miR-191* expression in A549 cells in vitro and in a xenograft mouse model. Irradiation also promoted the invasiveness of A549 cells in vitro and metastasis in vivo. In conclusion, miR-130a, miR-25 and miR-191* may be potential biomarkers for the diagnosis of patients with NSCLC and may serve oncogenic roles in radiation-mediated metastasis of NSCLC.

Background As of June 1, 2020, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused more than 6,000,000 infected persons and 360,000 deaths globally. Previous studies revealed pregnant women with COVID-19 had similar clinical manifestations to nonpregnant women. However, little is known about the outcome of neonates born to infected women. Methods and findings In this retrospective study, we studied 29 pregnant women with COVID-19 infection delivered in 2 designated general hospitals in Wuhan, China between January 30 and March 10, 2020, and 30 neonates (1 set of twins). Maternal demographic characteristics, delivery course, symptoms, and laboratory tests from hospital records were extracted. Neonates were hospitalized if they had symptoms (5 cases) or their guardians agreed to a hospitalized quarantine (13 cases), whereas symptom-free neonates also could be discharged after birth and followed up through telephone (12 cases). For hospitalized neonates, laboratory test results and chest X-ray or computed tomography (CT) were extracted from hospital records. The presence of antibody of SARS-CoV-2 was assessed in the serum of 4 neonates. Among 29 pregnant COVID-19-infected women (13 confirmed and 16 clinical diagnosed), the majority had higher education (56.6%), half were employed (51.7%), and their mean age was 29 years. Fourteen women experienced mild symptoms including fever (8), cough (9), shortness of breath (3), diarrhea (2), vomiting (1), and 15 were symptom-free. Eleven of 29 women had pregnancy complications, and 27 elected to have a cesarean section delivery. Of 30 neonates, 18 were admitted to Wuhan Children’s Hospital for quarantine and care, whereas the other 12 neonates discharged after birth without any symptoms and had normal follow-up. Five hospitalized neonates were diagnosed as COVID-19 infection (2 confirmed and 3 suspected). In addition, 12 of 13 other hospitalized neonates presented with radiological features for pneumonia through X-ray or CT screening, 1 with occasional cough and the others without associated symptoms. SARS-CoV-2 specific serum immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) were measured in 4 neonates and 2 were positive. The limited sample size limited statistical comparison between groups. Conclusions In this study, we observed COVID-19 or radiological features of pneumonia in some, but not all, neonates born to women with COVID-19 infection. These findings suggest that intrauterine or intrapartum transmission is possible and warrants clinical caution and further investigation. Objective We attempt to investigate the role of TNFRSF1A and its underlying mechanism in oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R)-induced injury in rat pheochromocytoma PC12 cells. Methods Public datasets GSE61616 and GSE106680 were downloaded from GEO database. PC12 cells were used to construct OGD/R models. QRT-PCR and western blot were implemented to test the relative mRNA and protein levels, respectively. The miRNA online prediction website TargetScan was used to predict TNFRSF1A upstream regulated miRNAs, which were then confirmed by luciferase reporter assay. The changes in cell viability and apoptosis were evaluated using cell counting kit 8 (CCK-8), lactose dehydrogenase (LDH), and flow cytometry assays. Results Bioinformatics analysis demonstrated that the expression of TNFRSF1A was upregulated in CI/RI and middle cerebral artery occlusion models compared with control, respectively. And a significant upregulation was also observed in OGD/R-damaged PC12 cells. Depletion of TNFRSF1A can notably enhance the cells proliferation after OGD/R treatment, while enlargement of TNFRSF1A presented the opposite outcomes. Moreover, miR-29a-3p was shown to be the upstream regulatory miRNA of TNFRSF1A. The levels of TNFRSF1A were inversely mediated by miR-29a-3p. Overexpression of miR-29a-3p can raise the cell viability, decrease the LDH activity, and reduce the apoptotic ratio in OGD/R-treated cells. Besides, TNFRSF1A can attenuate the protective effect of miR-29a-3p on OGD/R-treated cells. Furthermore, miR-29a-3p mimic inhibited, while overexpression of TNFRSF1A promoted the activation of NF-κB signaling pathway, and TNFRSF1A can attenuate the suppressive effect of miR-29a-3p on the NF-κB pathway. Conclusion Our research illustrated that the potential regulatory role of miR-29a-3p/TNFRSF1A axis in neurons cells suffered from OGD/R, and their effects on NF-κB signaling pathway, providing a possible bio-target for protecting cells from OGD/R damage .

Painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN) is a common and troublesome diabetes complication. Protein kinase C (PKC)-mediated dorsal root ganglia (DRG) P2X3 receptor upregulation is one important mechanism underlying PDN. Accumulating evidence demonstrated that electroacupuncture (EA) at low frequency could effectively attenuate neuropathic pain. Our previous study showed that 2-Hz EA could relieve pain well in PDN. The study aimed to investigate whether 2-Hz EA relieves pain in PDN through suppressing PKC-mediated DRG P2X3 receptor upregulation. A 7-week feeding of high-fat and high-sugar diet plus a single injection of streptozotocin (STZ) in a dose of 35 mg/kg after a 5-week feeding of the diet successfully induced type 2 PDN in rats as revealed by the elevated body weight, fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin and insulin resistance, and the reduced paw withdrawal threshold (PWT), as well as the destructive ultrastructural change of sciatic nerve. DRG plasma membrane P2X3 receptor level and DRG PKC expression were elevated. Two-hertz EA failed to improve peripheral neuropathy; however, it reduced PWT, DRG plasma membrane P2X3 receptor level, and DRG PKC expression in PDN rats. Intraperitoneal administration of P2X3 receptor agonist αβ-meATP or PKC activator phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) blocked 2-Hz EA analgesia. Furthermore, PMA administration increased DRG plasma membrane P2X3 receptor level in PDN rats subject to 2-Hz EA treatment. These findings together indicated that the analgesic effect of EA in PDN is mediated by suppressing PKC-dependent membrane P2X3 upregulation in DRG. EA at low frequency is a valuable approach for PDN control.

Non-motor symptoms (NMS) are important prodromal characteristics of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the incidence of NMS in first-degree relatives, such as siblings of PD patients, is still unknown.A total of 98 PD patients of the Affiliated Hospital of Yangzhou University were recruited; 210 siblings of these patients were included in a first-degree relatives (FDR) group and 250 healthy individuals were included in a control group. Various scales were used to assess NMS, including depression, anxiety, cognitive function, sleep status, constipation, daytime sleepiness, Rapid-Eye-Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD), and Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS).NMS were more common in the PD group than the control group. The incidence of anxiety (OR = 3.434, 95%CI: 2.058-5.731, P 0.001), depression (OR = 2.438, 95%CI: 1.289-4.609, P = 0.005), and RBD (OR = 4.120, 95%CI: 1.897-8.945, P 0.001) was higher in the FDR group than the control group. There were non-significant differences in constipation, cognitive impairment, sleep disorder, daytime sleepiness, and RLS between the two groups. The incidence of RLS in FDR of PD with an age of onset60 years was higher than in the controls (OR = 2.273, 95%CI: 1.107-4.667, P = 0.023).Siblings of PD are more likely to suffer from anxiety, depression and RBD than the general population. RLS is more common in siblings of PD with onset age60 than in the general population. It is speculated that PD patients and their siblings have common pathogenic genetic factors and early living environment for neurodegeneration.

Purposes: The objective of the study was to identify the trends and relations between antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antibiotic use in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in Western China from 2014 to 2016. Methods: A retrospective, descriptive analysis of AMR prevalence, and trends and relations between AMR and antibiotic use during the 3-year period was performed. Results: Third-generation cephalosporin-resistant Escherichia coli was the most prevalent resistant pathogen in terms of both resistance density and resistance proportion. A significant correlation was found between resistance density of third-generation cephalosporin-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae and the use of beta-lactam–beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations (cc = 0.63, p = 0.03), quinolones (cc = 0.60, p = 0.04), and carbapenems (cc = 0.76, p = 0.004), among which only beta-lactam–beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations showed a significant correlation with third-generation cephalosporin-resistant E. coli (cc = 0.63, p = 0.03). For carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, not only carbapenem use (cc = 0.65, p = 0.02) but also penicillin (cc = 0.76, p = 0.004) and quinolone (cc = 0.69, p = 0.01) use showed significant correlation. A strong correlation was observed between the resistant proportion of third-generation cephalosporin-resistant E. coli and only the use of beta-lactam–beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations (cc = 0.61, p = 0.03). Conclusion: The association between antibiotic use and AMR, especially the implication of the difference in resistance density and resistance proportion, is crucial for local physicians and decision-makers to better use of antibiotics and allocate healthcare resources more effectively, as well as to better implement antimicrobial stewardship and effective infection control strategies. To analyze and summarize the characteristics and pattern in the selection of points and meridians by searching the clinical research literature about acupuncture-moxibustion treatment of amblyopia in the recent 17 years. By searching Chinese and English databases, such as China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), PubMed, etc., the points in 52 articles in conformity with the requirements were analyzed by frequency statistics by the order of meridians, major points, and adjunct points to summarize the rules and characteristics of the point selection. In 52 articles, there were 21 articles on ear acupuncture and 31 articles on acupuncture-moxibustion treatment. Ten meridians were involved in acupuncture-moxibustion treatment of amblyopia, and the leading 3 meridians were the Bladder, Stomach and Gallbladder Meridians. There were 34 points, 10 extraordinary points and 37 ear points were used in acupuncture-moxibustion treatment of amblyopia. The top 10 major points were Jingming (BL 1), Taiyang (EX-HN 5), Cuanzhu (BL 2), Fengchi (GB 20), Baihui (GV 20), Hegu (LI 4), Guangming (GB 37), Sibai (ST 2), Chengqi (ST 1) and Sizhukong (TE 23). The top 5 adjunct points were Zusanli (ST 36), Shenshu (BL 23), Ganshu (BL 18), Sanyinjiao (SP 6) and Taixi (KI 3). Acupuncture-moxibustion treatment of amblyopia is characterized by the selection of the points mainly from yang meridians, based upon syndromes differentiation plus personal experience, and the points mainly around the eyes and by stressed use of ear points.

In future active distribution networks (ADNs), microgrids (MGs) may have the possibility to control the power dispatched to the ADN by coordinating the output power of their multiple renewable generation units and energy storage units (ESUs). In this way, each MG may support the active distribution network, while promoting the penetration of renewable energy sources in a rational way. In this paper, we propose a tie-line power flow control of a hybrid MG, including photovoltaic (PV) generator, small wind turbines (WT), and ESUs.Firstly, the structure of the hybrid PV/WT/ESU MG is presented. In this power architecture, the battery is directly connected to the PV side through a DC/DC converter, thus reducing the number of conversions. Secondly, a hierarchical control is proposed to coordinate all those elements of the MG, making the tie-line power flow constant for a period of time, e.g. 15. min. Also, a method to calculate the tie-line power flow to be exchanged between the MG and the ADN is explored, and a power ramp rate is given between different dispatch intervals. Finally, a simulation model of the hybrid MG is built and tested. Simulation results show that the proposed hierarchical control strategy can select the proper operational mode and achieve seamless transfer between different modes. It also presents power curtailment functionality when the difference between the WT/PV output power and tie-line exchanged power flow is too large.

Gut microbiota is closely related to the tumorigenesis and progression of colorectal cancer (CRC), especially Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) could promote colorectal tumor growth and cause chemoresistance. Here, we developed a tumor-triggered release drug delivery gel to inhibit CRC cell growth in situ by intestinal perfusion. Antibiotic metronidazole (MTZ) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), the first-line chemotherapy drug of CRC, are individually incorporated into metal polyphenol network-coated mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN), and then blended with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) to obtain an anti-CRC gel, AB-Gel. In vivo studies showed that AB-Gel could efficiently inhibit the growth and metastasis of CRC in an orthotopic mouse model attributing to the MTZ-induced modulation in the CRC-related microbiota. Chemotherapy efficacy against orthotopic CRC was significantly enhanced by the elimination of Fn. This strategy based on the combination of gut microbiota modulation and chemotherapy would be considered as an enhanced strategy for CRC treatment with potential use in the clinic.

With the development of web-based electronic learning (e-learning), a huge number of e-learning materials in different scientific areas are available. Consequently, it can be confusing for learners when selecting suitable courseware from a large-scale dataset of e-learning options. In this work, we present an on-line course applicability assessment (OCAA) to assist learners in course selection. This method is based on the statistical analysis of learners' individual characteristics and teaching strategy of specific on-line courses. Three main characteristics are taken into consideration, including ‘learning style’, ‘learning behavioral type’ and ‘prior knowledge’ which considerably affect e-learning effectiveness. Three on-line courses with different teaching strategies were adopted, and a two-step experiment was scheduled to establish the OCAA model and test its usability, usefulness and performance. The research findings show that the e-learning effectiveness is improved under the assistance of OCAA. Thus, OCAA could make it easier for learners to find suitable course matched with their own individual characteristics, and the e-learning effectiveness could be improved.

Cervical cancer is the third most common cancer in women worldwide. Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been identified as an etiological factor for cervical cancer. Data on the prevalence and subtype distribution of HPV infection in Jiangxi Province are incomplete. In this study, we investigated HPV subtype distribution and prevalence in Jiangxi Province between August 1, 2010, and December 31, 2015. A total of 71,435 individuals ranging in age from 16 to 77 years were recruited. Cervicovaginal swabs were collected from each participant, and HPV screening was performed. Our results showed that the HPV prevalence was 22.49% in Jiangxi Province. Overall, 14.99% of individuals were positive for a single HPV type, and 7.49% were positive for multiple types. The most frequently detected low-risk genotypes were HPV-6, and high-risk genotypes were HPV-16, -18, -33, -52, and -58. The prevalence and type distribution of HPV infection exhibits regional and age differences; Yingtan had the highest incidence for high-risk HPV infection (32.00%), and peaks in the frequencies of HPV infections were seen for patients under 20 and over 60 years of age. In conclusion, we present data showing that the HPV prevalence varies significantly with age and regions in Jiangxi Province. These results can serve as valuable reference to guide Jiangxi cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination programs. Keywords: Human papillomavirus, Jiangxi Province, Subtypes, Age

Background & Aim The herpes virus entry mediator (HVEM) network has become new directions in targeting novel checkpoint inhibitors for cancer therapy. However, the changes of membrane-bound HVEM (mHVEM) and soluble HVEM (sHVEM) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are not fully understood. This study aims to study the changes of mHVEM and sHVEM in HCC patients. Methods Serum samples were collected from 65 HCC patients, from which sHVEM levels were examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Expressions of mHVEM on peripheral lymphocytes from 20 HCC patients were determined using flow cytometry and associations between mHVEM on T and B cells were analyzed. Results The levels of mHVEM were down-regulated on peripheral lymphocytes in HCC patients, with a strong positive correlation between mHVEM expression on T and B cells. In contrast, the levels of soluble HVEM were up-regulated in the serum of HCC patients. Furthermore, we found that the increase of sHVEM level was correlated with advanced stages HCC. Conclusion Our data demonstrated paradoxical changes of membrane and soluble HVEM in the peripheral blood of HCC patients for the first time. These data supported the notion that roles of HVEM are likely to be immunosuppressive rather than activating tumor immunity. Future studies are warranted to further explore the translational values of mHVEM and sHVEM in peripheral blood as diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets.

BACKGROUND Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) is proposed as a simple and effective screening tool for abdominal obesity and cardiovascular disease risk factors. The present study examined the profiles of blood pressure (BP) among children and adolescents categorized by WHtR cutoffs. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 28 074 (14 015 boys and 14 059 girls) students aged 7-17 years participated in the study. Height, waist circumference and BP of all patients were measured, and WHtR was calculated. Relatively high blood pressure (RHBP) status was defined as systolic BP and/or diastolic BP of at least the 95th percentile for age and sex. All patients were divided into three groups (low, moderate and high) according to their WHtR. BP level and the prevalence of RHBP among the three groups were compared. Purpose To evaluate whether whole-tumor histogram-derived parameters for an apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) map and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could aid in assessing Ki-67 labeling index (LI) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Materials and Methods In all, 57 patients with HCC who underwent pretreatment MRI with a 3T MR scanner were included retrospectively. Histogram parameters including mean, median, standard deviation, skewness, kurtosis, and percentiles (5th, 25th, 75th, 95th) were derived from the ADC map and MR enhancement. Correlations between histogram parameters and Ki-67 LI were evaluated and differences between low Ki-67 (≤10%) and high Ki-67 (>10%) groups were assessed. Results Mean, median, 5th, 25th, 75th percentiles of ADC, and mean, median, 25th, 75th, 95th percentiles of enhancement of arterial phase (AP) demonstrated significant inverse correlations with Ki-67 LI (rho up to −0.48 for ADC, −0.43 for AP) and showed significant differences between low and high Ki-67 groups (P < 0.001–0.04). Areas under the receiver operator characteristics (ROC) curve for identification of high Ki-67 were 0.78, 0.77, 0.79, 0.82, and 0.76 for mean, median, 5th, 25th, 75th percentiles of ADC, respectively, and 0.74, 0.81, 0.76, 0.82, 0.69 for mean, median, 25th, 75th, 95th percentiles of AP, respectively. Background Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) is proposed as a simple, valid and convenient measure of abdominal obesity and health risks in practice. The present study examined the distribution of nutritional status among children and adolescents categorized by WHtR cut-offs. Methods A total of 30,459 students (15,249 boys and 15,210 girls) aged 7–18years participated in the study. Height, weight and waist circumference (WC) of all subjects were measured, body mass index (BMI) and WHtR were calculated. The grades of nutritional status (thinness, normal weight, overweight and obesity) was defined by the international BMI cut-offs. All subjects were divided into three groups (low, moderate and high) according to their WHtR, BMI level and the distribution of nutritional status among the three groups were compared. Results In both boys and girls, significant differences in BMI level and the nutritional status were observed among the three groups. Children and adolescents aged 7–18years in the ‘high WHtR group' (≥0.5) had higher BMI than those in the ‘low WHtR group' ( 2 for boys and 5.24–9.51kg/m 2 for girls. ‘low WHtR group' had higher prevalence of thinness, and ‘high WHtR group' had higher prevalence of overweight and obesity. The optimal distribution of nutritional status is found in the ‘moderate WHtR group' (between 0.4 and 0.5) with the highest proportion of normal weight and low prevalence of thinness and obesity. Conclusion WHtR is associated with nutritional status, which could be an indicator of nutritional status and early health risk. It is necessary to develop optimal boundary values in the future.

Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most malignant tumors with high incidence and mortality worldwide, and the multidrug resistance (MDR) often results in chemotherapy failure in GC. DJ-1 has been well indicated to be associated with drug resistance in multiple cancers. However, the role of DJ-1 in the MDR of gastric cancer cells and its possible mechanism remain to be elucidated. Therefore, the current study was investigated whether DJ-1 expression is differential in parental gastric cancer cell SGC7901 and vincristine (VCR)-induced gastric cancer MDR cell SGC7901/VCR, and whether DJ-1 plays a significant role in development of MDR in gastric cancer. The results showed that DJ-1 expression in SGC7901/VCR cells was significantly higher than its sensitive parental SGC7901 cells. Furthermore, DJ-1 overexpressed gastric cancer cell line SGC7901/LV-DJ-1 led to the increase of cell survival rate, the IC50 of chemotherapeutic drugs and number of cell clones as well as decrease of cell cycle G0/G1 phase ratio compared with its parental cells under the treatment of VCR, adriamycin (ADR), 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) and cisplatin (DDP). However, the DJ-1 knockdown stable cell line SGC7901/VCR/shDJ-1 reversed the above mentioned series of MDR. Moreover, it was found that upregulation of DJ-1 protein expression promoted the pumping rate of GC cells to ADR and reduced the apoptotic index of GC cells treated with chemotherapeutic drugs by upregulating P-gp and Bcl-2. Similarly, knocking down DJ-1, P-gp or Bcl-2 displayed a converse effect. In conclusion, the current study demonstrated that DJ-1 overexpression confers the MDR phenotype to SGC7901 cells and this process is related to DJ-1 promoting active efflux of drugs and enhancing the anti-apoptotic ability of MDR GC cells by upregulating P-gp and Bcl-2.
