Leiomyomas involving the small bowel are rare benign tumors comprising 0.2% to 1.8% of all gastrointestinal tumors. We have presented a case with the rare complication of a free perforation between the tumor and the peritoneal cavity, causing an acute abdomen.

For several years, I have used the previous editions of this book as a text for pediatric residents who "rotate" through our microbiology laboratory during their training. Almost invariably they have been delighted to discover a book on this subject which was brief, lucid, and seemed written especially for them. This new edition should prove no disappointment to them. Brought up-to-date, it is an authoritative introduction to clinical bacteriology, not a reference work where the details of unusual bugs can be found. It covers more than most pediatricians will want to know about bacterial cytology, metabolism, and genetics. However, most will profit by reading the section on antimicrobial chemotherapy, several times. Similarly, the section on allergy and hypersensitivity will motivate the reader to take a new look at autoimmune disease. This is a bit surprising since I noted in the A.M.A. News recently that Cerumenex had been removed from the market because of a number of hypersensitivity reactions. Measurement of pulmonary ventilation in infants has been performed by a number of investigators.1-8In the last three decades plethysmographic methods have been used by most groups, although it has recently been demonstrated that the mask-and-bag technique is possible in small infants.7,8Observations have been chiefly limited to the newborn period, although one study has included a few infants up to 3 months of age.2 None of the studies to date have included data on flow rates. The purpose of this paper is to describe a method which permits direct measurement of ventilation. In addition, observations which have been extended to infants up to 8.9 months of age are included. This special edition of four volumes of the International Archives of Allergy and Applied Immunology is devoted to papers by approximately a hundred authors who combine to honor Dr. Bela Schick on his eightieth birthday. That such a large and diverse group of papers could be assembled in tribute to a man who rightly may lay claim to having been instrumental in bringing forth the concept of allergy is testimonial indeed to the soundness of his concept. Those who would learn more about Dr. Schick himself will be better referred to Antoni Gronowicz's biography, "Bela Schick and the World of Children." The present volume is of interest primarily to the allergist, the immunologist, and the pediatrician who still considers allergy as an antigen-antibody function and not an interaction between parenteral pathogens and childhood substrate. More students, residents, and ECFMG candidates will buy this little book than professors. This is because there are vastly more of the former than the latter. However, the book tells the professor more things he does not know about examining students than it tells the student about taking multiple-choice examinations. Doubtless the student will perform better in such examinations if he has read the sections devoted to the types of questions and their answers (14 pages; 8 more for ECFMG candidates). He will doubtless gain some confidence in having taken the sample examination included (35 pages). But for the professor, more than two-thirds of the book is pertinent material. Largely reflecting the extensive experience of the National Board of Medical Examiners, here are countless tips for improving the validity of student assessment. This volume is made up of 14 concise summary articles on selected topics in hematology and a like number about blood groups. The authors represent the cream of British workers in these fields. When published in 1959, as 2 issues of the British Medical Bulletin , the material was fresh and authoritative. Undoubtedly, they were republished in book form because they were found to fill a unique need for a review of "what's new" in these fields. The review is still authoritative and, in those topics which have not advanced rapidly in the intervening 2 years, reasonably up-to-date. One has only to survey the material here, however, to realize how rapid has been our progress. The presentation of certain subjects such as the composition of the hemoglobins and the reactions of antiglobulin serum has been almost revolutionized in the past 2 years.
