The aim of this work was to study the influence of quenching and partitioning temperatures combined with various levels of Mn and Ni contents on the austenite stabilization along the quenching and partitioning (Q&P) cycle. Three steels with 2 wt.%, 4 wt.% and 6 wt.% manganese and one steel with 2 wt.% nickel content were investigated. Phase transformation temperatures and critical cooling rates were obtained experimentally using dilatometer for each alloy. Q&P cycles with different quenching and partitioning temperatures were also done in dilatometer, thus, allowing monitoring of the expansion/contraction during the whole Q&P cycle. Microstructure characterization was performed by means of a Scanning Electron Microscope and X-Ray Diffraction to measure retained austenite content. It was found that, strongly depending on the Q&P conditions, austenite stabilization or decomposition occurs during partitioning and final cooling. In case of high partitioning temperature cycles, austenite reverse transformation was observed. Certain cycles resulted in a very effective austenite stabilization and interesting microstructure. Genetic resources of aquatic species are of tremendous value, but worldwide these are maintained almost exclusively as live populations. This is extremely expensive and insecure, and largely results from a pervasive lack of production capability, quality management, and reproducibility in cryopreservation that are barriers in development of germplasm repositories. Community-based technology approaches are emerging that can stimulate research previously limited by a lack of affordable, customizable equipment. Open-access technologies can provide for custom design and fabrication not available through traditional manufacturing. This can assist repository development with robust sample production methods and strong quality management, and can greatly improve reproducibility and standardization. Open technologies can support establishment of new communities of users, makers, and developers that collectively strive to develop open hardware in a distributed (i.e., non-centralized) fashion that can yield aggregate throughput. This occurs through use of consumer-level tools, supplies, software, and equipment, free exchange of designs and modifications, and a shared sense of mission. For cryopreservation and repository development, we have identified 14 categories of open hardware for a processing pathway, and six categories for a quality management pathway. Open hardware offers economic incentives to develop repositories for aquatic species, something that has not occurred despite 70 years of research largely focused on protocol development rather than practical applications. Advanced development of custom scientific hardware enhancing open technologies will be facilitated by interdisciplinary collaboration across biological and engineering fields. Background Antibodies to the aquaporin-4 (AQP4) water channel in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) are reported to trigger the complement cascade, which is implicated in astrocyte damage and subsequent neuronal injury. The PREVENT study demonstrated that the terminal complement inhibitor eculizumab reduces adjudicated relapse risk in patients with anti-AQP4 immunoglobulin G-positive (AQP4+) NMOSD. The objective of this analysis was to evaluate the efficacy of eculizumab in reducing relapse risk and its safety in AQP4+ NMOSD across clinically relevant subgroups in PREVENT. Methods In the randomized, double-blind, time-to-event, phase 3 PREVENT trial, 143 adults received eculizumab (maintenance dose, 1200 mg/2 weeks) or placebo (2:1), with stable-dose concomitant immunosuppressive therapy (IST) permitted (except rituximab and mitoxantrone). Post hoc analyses of relapses and adverse events were performed for prespecified and post hoc subgroups based on concomitant IST and prior rituximab use, demographic and disease characteristics, and autoimmune comorbidity. Results The significant reduction in relapse risk observed for eculizumab versus placebo in the overall PREVENT population was consistently maintained across subgroups based on concomitant IST and previous rituximab use, age, sex, region, race, time since clinical onset of NMOSD, historical annualized relapse rate, baseline Expanded Disability Status Scale score, and history of another autoimmune disorder. The serious infection rate was lower with eculizumab than placebo regardless of rituximab use in the previous year, concomitant IST use, or history of another autoimmune disorder. Conclusion Across a wide range of clinically relevant AQP4+ NMOSD patient subgroups in PREVENT, eculizumab therapy was consistently effective versus placebo in reducing relapse risk, with no apparent increase in serious infection rate. Tin(IV) sulfide (SnS2), as a mid-band-gap semiconductor shows good potential as an excellent photocatalyst due to its low cost, wide light spectrum response and environment-friendly nature. However, to meet the demands of large-scale water treatment, a SnS2 photocatalyst with a red-shifted band gap, increased surface area and accelerated molecule and ion diffusion is required. Doping is a facile method to manipulate the optical and chemical properties of semiconductor materials simultaneously. In this work, SnS2 photocatalysts with varied Ag doping content are synthesized through a facile one-step hydrothermal method. The product is characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and UV-Vis spectrometry. The photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared Sn1−xAgxS2 is studied by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye under solar light irradiation. It is found that increasing the Ag dopant concentration can effectively increase the solar light adsorption efficiency of the photocatalyst and accelerate heterogeneous photocatalysis. The optimal concentration of Ag dopant is found to be 5% with the highest rate constant being 1.8251 hour−1. This study demonstrates that an optimal amount of Ag doping can effectively increase the photocatalytic performance of SnS2 and will promote the commercialization of such photocatalysts in the photocatalytic degradation of organic compounds.

This paper presents a portable fluorescent sensing system that utilizes different light emitting diode (LED) excitation lights for multiple target detection. In order to identify different analytes, three different wavelengths (385 nm, 448 nm, and 590 nm) of excitation light emitting diodes were used to selectively stimulate the target analytes. A highly sensitive silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) was used to detect corresponding fluorescent signals from each analyte. Based on the unique fluorescent response of each analyte, it is possible to simultaneously differentiate one analyte from the other in a mixture of target analytes. A portable system was designed and fabricated consisting of a display module, battery, data storage card, and sample loading tray into a compact 3D-printed jig. The portable sensor system was demonstrated for quantification and differentiation of microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris) and cyanobacteria (Spirulina) by measuring fluorescent responses of chlorophyll a in microalgae and phycocyanin in cyanobacteria. Obtained results suggest that the developed portable sensor system could be used as a generic fluorescence sensor platform for on-site detection of multiple analytes of interest.

Anaerobic biodegradation in sewage sludge of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) was investigated. Evolved gaseous carbon was measured to assess biodegradability according to ASTM D5210. Mass-loss experiments were performed to determine degradation kinetics. Changes in the polymer properties were investigated. The impact of a natural plasticizer [tributyl citrate (TBC)] on biodegradation was determined. Polylactic acid was also biodegraded for comparison. Melt-pressed plates of PHB (with thicknesses of 0.24, 0.5, 1.2, 3.5, and 5.0 mm) were biodegraded to investigate the relationship between initial mass:initial surface area ratios and decay rates. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs of degraded specimens were recorded for visual illustration of the degradation process. A relationship between initial mass:initial surface area and degradation rates indicates that the thickness and surface area of the material affect its degradation. The degradation rates were impacted by the sewage sludge activity. TBC additive hindered PHB's rate of degradation. Thermal properties, molecular bonding, and molecular weight measured by differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared, and size exclusion chromatography, respectively, were only slightly affected by biodegradation, indicating that recycling PHB will not affect its performance.

An estimated 28% of the production cost in HISTAR systems that are artificially illuminated is attributed to the lighting cost. This cost estimated is based on an operational configuration comprised of eight CFSTRs, a system dilution rate ( D s ) of 0.640 d −1 , and 400 W metal halide lamps positioned at an elevation of 38.1 cm over the culture. Deterministic model simulations of the volumetric productivity ( P v ), photosynthetic efficiency ( E o ) and lighting cost (LC) under various management strategies, operational parameters and reactor design configurations were performed and compared to the simulation results obtained for the original configuration. The simulations showed that LC may be reduced by 35.5% by switching from a metal halide (MH) to high-pressure sodium (HPS) light source at an optimum system dilution rate D s = 0.641 d −1 . LC may be reduced by an additional 17.8% through decreasing the lamp elevation to 25.4 cm. Increasing the wattage of the light source from 400 to 1000 W in the last six reactors would reduce the LC by 13% from the original cost. Overall, using HPS lamps at 25.4 cm height, with six 1000 W and two 400 W lamps at a D s = 0.641 d −1 will result in a 54% overall LC reduction compared to the original configuration of HISTAR. This represents a 13% reduction in the overall microalgal production cost for HISTAR.

People with severe physical disabilities may experience psychosocial problems. Boccia is one sport that athletes with severe disability can engage in, but no information on the effects of Boccia on psychosocial outcomes for participants with severe disability is available. Therefore, we analyzed the effects of Boccia on psychosocial outcomes in persons with severe disabilities. The study included two competitive Boccia groups: independent competitive (IC) (n = 9) and nonindependent competitive (NIC) (n = 7), as well as a recreational Boccia group (n = 14) and control subjects (n = 13) (mean age = 46.46 +/- 10.75). All participants underwent a rehabilitation program. Between-group differences in change scores were assessed using analysis of variance/multivariate analysis of variance. Within-group differences were compared using t-tests and effect sizes (ESs). Change in psychosocial parameters was not significantly influenced by study group (p > 0.05). All groups presented moderate-to-large ESs in physical and psychological quality of life (ES > 0.51). In comparison to the control group, who presented small-to-trivial ESs in General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Profile of Mood States-Tension, the IC and recreational group presented moderate ESs in GHQ-28, whereas the NIC group presented moderate ESs in anxiety and tension. In conclusion, the rehabilitation program had a general positive effect on the psychosocial status of individuals with severe physical disabilities. However, the competitive Boccia groups demonstrated a greater number of favorable changes, suggesting an added value of participation in Boccia.

Factors such as limitations in water quality and quantity, cost of land, limitations on water discharges, environmental impacts and diseases, are driving the aquaculture industry toward more intensive practices. This will force producers to adopt environmentally friendlier technologies. Recirculating systems, with a biofilter as the most prominent characteristic, treat internally the water contaminated with dissolved organics and ammonia and reduce the amount of water use and discharge from aquaculture operations. This paper reviews the implications of the changing use of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) on biofiltration research for freshwater and marine operations. Demand for cost effective biofilters will increase with the expansion of recirculating systems, both as a complement and replacement of traditional ponds. For freshwater aquaculture, emphasis should be placed in cost competitiveness, low head operations, intensification of ponds with RAS biofiltration and the evaluation of suspended growth systems. In the marine systems, an increase in demand of oligotrophic and ultraoligotrophic systems is expected, particularly in the nursery systems. Sizing and cost efficiency of biofilters for nursery operations should be addressed. Problems in marine biofilter acclimation appear to justify the development of new acclimation procedures. Biosecurity concerns, land cost and storm threats will drive nursery systems inland, where saltwater supply and disposal will force an increased water reuse. Denitrification strategies will need to be redefined and optimized for the marine nursery environment.

Subarachnoid extramedullary intraspinal ‘cysts’ containing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), known as ‘diverticula’, can occur due to chronic inflammation or trauma in human beings and veterinary species. In dogs, these diverticula typically occur in the dorsal subarachnoid space at the level of the first and third cervical vertebrae of young, large breed dogs, or at the level of the caudal thoracic vertebrae of older, medium and small breed dogs. We present a case of a seven-year-old female neutered flat-coated retriever which experienced clinical signs localised to the cauda equina. Myelography and computed radiography (CT) imaging demonstrated a subarachnoid diverticulum in the ventral subarachnoid space at the level of the seventh lumbar vertebra (L7) cranial to a spinal sarcoma.

Background: There is often a delay between the clinical emergence of a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and the point in time at which the patient presents for definitive diagnosis and treatment. Previously published studies on delays regarding skin cancer have focused on melanoma rather than Bcc. We conducted a study aimed at identifying factors associated with the detection of Bcc and reasons for the delay in diagnosis. Method: A monocentric study was performed. Patients with a primary BCC diagnosed in 2010 were included in the study. They were asked about factors concerning BCC awareness and detection, tumor characteristics, previous history of nonmelanoma cutaneous cancer, family history of nonmelanoma cutaneous cancer, and the presence of comorbidities. Data were analyzed using SPSS software. Results: The mean diagnostic delay for BCC in our hospital setting was estimated at 19.79 ± 14.71 months. Delayed diagnosis was significantly associated with patients over 65 years, those without a previous history of BCC, those without a family history of BCC, those with BCC located elsewhere than the head or neck, and those with lesions not associated with itching or bleeding. Conclusion: This study revealed considerable delay in the diagnosis of BCC. The main reason for delay in the diagnosis seems to be the initial decision of the patient to seek medical advice. These data suggest a need for greater information for the general public on the symptoms and signs that should prompt suspicion of a BCC.

Background: Aggressive basal cell carcinomas (BCC) are not rare. These subtypes of skin cancer are characterized by an infiltrative behavior and rapid progression. Often, management may be difficult. Recent evidence suggests that minimal UV exposure in combination with other behavioral and/or environmental factors may lead to higher incidence of BCC and, therefore, more risk of aggressive subtypes of this malignancy. Alcohol is a very commonly consumed beverage in Western societies, especially in association with outdoors activities. Objective: To investigate a possible relationship between alcohol intake and aggressive histological variants of BCC. Materials and Method: We designed a prospective study. Patients who underwent surgery for BCC in our hospital were interviewed to collect data regarding alcohol intake. The specimens were reviewed by a pathologist and classified into aggressive and non-aggressive subtypes. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software. Results: 136 patients were included. Of participants with aggressive BCCs, 10 (26.3%) were abstainers, 4 (10.4%) had light consumption, 18 (47.5%) moderate consumption and 6 (15.8%) heavy consumption, while among participants with non-aggressive BCCs, 57 (58.2%) were abstainers, 29 (29.5%) had light consumption, 10 (10.2%) moderate consumption and 2 (2.1%) heavy consumption. In the multivariate analysis we found a positive significant association between alcohol consumption and the presence of aggressive BBCs. Conclusions: According to our results, alcohol intake may be linked with a higher incidence of aggressive subtypes of BCC

Background: Aggressive histology is not rare in BCC. Large studies from referral centers report incidences of aggressive histology BCC ranging from 2.5- 44%. These aggressive BCC are characterized by subclinical extension, invasive behavior, local recurrence and challenging treatment. Objectives: To examine the association between non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use and the different histological subtypes of basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Methods: The design was a nested case-control study. The two population-based cohorts were of patients with a primary BCC diagnosis during January and May 2010 (n=136) and NSAID use in the 15 years prior to baseline. All the lesions were excised and analyzed to determinate the histological subtype of BCC as aggressive or non-aggressive. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), using conditional logistic regression, were calculated with the SPSS software to estimate the association of aggressive histological subtypes of BCC and use of NSAID. We controlled the potential confounding factors. Results: The rate of non-aggressive BCC associated with exposure to NSAID was increased (OD: 0.34; 95% CI: 0.14-0.84) after adjusting for covariants. Limitations: our sample is small. We collected data regarding use of NSAID over a wide time ranges, so that we are unable to propose when the potential benefits of NSAID on the histology of BCC would happen. Conclusion: According to our data, NSAID exposure is associated with a decreased risk of aggressive BCC.

Zoological parks, nature centers, natural history museums, and related institutions are valuable resources for urban environmental education in developing countries. To determine the effectiveness of conservation education strategies currently in use at such institutions in Colombia, the authors implemented and compared several program formats. A zoo workshop in wildlife conservation targeting elementary school teachers was designed, evaluated, and contrasted with existing programs, including a zoo visit preceded by a slide show, an unstructured visit to the zoo, and a control group. The authors assessed responses from 1,015 fourth-grade students in 26 randomly selected schools in Cali, Colombia. Alignment and shaping of the musculoskeletal system occur during each body position that infants experience while in neonatal intensive care. Neonatal nurses and physical therapists can play a major role in designing, modeling, and teaching positioning strategies that promote skeletal integrity, postural control, and sensorimotor organization. Musculoskeletal maturation processes and adverse musculoskeletal consequences are reviewed with an emphasis on clinical implications for neonatal care, discharge teaching, and follow-up. Recommendations are offered for neonatal positioning procedures to prevent extremity malalignment, skull deformities, and gross motor delay.

One of the research topics within the EU-project SKILLS1 was the training of Industrial Maintenance and Assembly (IMA) tasks. The IMA demonstrator developed comprehends two different training platforms, one based on technologies of Virtual Reality (VR) and the other one on Augmented Reality (AR). To qualify the efficiency of the developed training systems different studies have been conducted, followed by a final “Transfer of Skill” evaluation that has been performed by service technicians at the “SIDEL industrial training centre” in Parma. This evaluation included qualitative methods (feedback collection in questionnaires) as well as quantitative methods (experiments with control groups). The results demonstrate that both platforms are useful and suitable training tools for IMA tasks, and that the AR training decreased the number of unsolved errors in the task.
