Purpose: This study was done to develop and validate a scale for assessing nursing needs on comprehensive nursing care units and to derive a patient classification system based on nursing needs.Methods: In this methodological study, the initial items were identified through a review of the literature and surveys from nursing staff regarding the nursing needs on comprehensive nursing care units. Content validity was evaluated by nine nursing staff members from comprehensive nursing care units. To evaluate the concurrent validity and derive a patient classification system, nursing needs scores, perceived nursing needs and perceived patient severity for 216 patient cases were evaluated by five nurses. These data were analyzed using Pearson‘s correlation coefficients, one-way ANOVA with Scheffépost hoc tests and K-means clustering.Results: After evaluating content validity, the developed scale contained 64 activities in two domains: nursing intervention and assistance of daily living. Background: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at investigating the current status and prevalence of sleep disturbance in Korean university students and provide evidence to develop appropriate strategies for improving sleep disturbance.Methods: Pooled prevalence of sleep disturbance in Korean university students was assessed using PubMed, CINAHL, Research Information Sharing Service, National Assembly Library, Korean studies Information Service System, and Korea Citation Index databases. A total of 1,843 studies were retrieved from the literature search, and 14 studies were included in the analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using comprehensive meta-analysis software.Results: The overall pooled prevalence was 48.9% (95% confidence interval [CI], 41.6-56.3%). Subgroup analyses revealed that the pooled prevalence rates were 59.2% (95% CI, 38.8-50.7%) in the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)-based and 26.0% (95% CI, 19.5-33.9%) in non-PSQI-based studies, 23.2% (95% CI, 15.6-33.1%) in low-quality and 56.9% (95% CI, 49.3-64.2%) in moderate-quality studies, 35.6% (95% CI, 33.4-37.8%) in studies published before 2010 and 51.4% (95% CI, 42.9-59.8%) in studies published since 2011.Conclusions: The prevalence of sleep disturbance is higher in university students. Therefore, further studies are needed to identify sleep problems of university students and gain future-oriented insights to develop mediation strategies.

Purpose: Comprehensive nursing care services are provided for patient-centered nursing care in Korea. This study was conducted to compare differences in the frequency and elapsed time of nursing activities between comprehensive nursing care units and general medical-surgical units. Methods: This is a descriptive study design using direct observation of nursing care activities. A time and motion study on the frequency and elapsed time of nursing activities provided by nurses was conducted in the comprehensive nursing care units and general units of two small-to-medium sized hospitals. Data were collected for 64 hours in each hospital, through a two-way method using a checklist and a camera recorder. Results: The total number of nursing activities, activities provided per patient and patient safety care including clinical assessment and treatment were higher in the comprehensive nursing care units compared to general units. We found similar findings regarding the duration of nursing activities. Conclusion: Comprehensive nursing care units provide patient-centered nursing care and have a broader range of nursing activities for patient safety than general units. Assessments conducted to meet nursing needs and to promote safe nurse staffing should reflect the characteristics of the nursing tasks performed in comprehensive nursing care units.

The secondary traumatic stress (STS) of nurses caring for COVID-19 patients is expected to be high, and it can adversely affect patient care. The purpose of this study was to examine the degree of STS of nurses caring for COVID-19 patients, and we identified various factors that influence STS. This study followed a descriptive design. The data of 136 nurses who had provided direct care to COVID-19 patients from 5 September to 26 September 2020 were collected online. Hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to identify the factors influencing STS. Participants experienced moderate levels of STS. The regression model of Model 1 was statistically significant (F = 6.21, p &lt, 0.001), and the significant factors influencing STS were the duration of care for patients with COVID-19 for more than 30 days (β = 0.28, p &lt, 0.001) and working in an undesignated COVID-19 hospital (β = 0.21, p = 0.038). In Model 2, the factor influencing STS was the support of a friend in the category of social support (β = −0.21, p = 0.039). The nurses caring for COVID-19 patients are experiencing a persistent and moderate level of STS. This study can be used as basic data to treat and prevent STS.

The quantitative expansion of nursing schools has necessitated the qualitative improvement of nursing education, which requires the development of nursing education for clinical practice. To identify strategies for strengthening the educational capacity of clinical fields and nursing schools, this study first examined the current status of nursing education for clinical practice, and then proposed several prospective directions for education. Nursing clinical practice-related studies from several Korean and international electronic databases were reviewed. Insufficient training hospitals and lack of qualified clinical training instructors were the main problems found within nursing educational resources for clinical practice, while the simple practice contents based on observation and inadequate evaluations were the main problems found in nursing educational management for clinical practice. This study suggests better standards and educational accountability for training hospitals and programs to nurture human resources for clinical practice, as well as a variety of training methods to integrate practical training courses and the expansion of formation evaluation. Based on these results, it is necessary to establish governance for nursing education for clinical practice and clarify the role and standards of each practitioner, strengthen the educational role of the hospital, and improve the system. In addition, introducing various types of education methods and strengthening evaluation standards are needed in order to enhance nursing education for clinical practice.

This study examined the perception and readiness of nursing educators regarding interprofessional education (IPE), and discussed the validity and application of IPE in nursing. From December 2016 to January 2017, 239 nursing professors and nurses completed a structured questionnaire consisting of general characteristics, the Interdisciplinary Education Perception Scale, the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Survey (RIPLS), and an IPE action plan. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and t-test using the IBM SPSS ver. 23.0 program (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). The analysis revealed that 91.6% of the participants had not experienced IPE, and only 11.7% knew about IPE. However, approximately 80.0% answered that IPE is necessary. The results of this study showed that the score of the perceived need for cooperation was higher in nurses than it was in professors, while the score on competency and autonomy was higher in professors than it was in nurses. With reference to the scores on the RIPLS, those of professors were high on the sub-scales of teamwork and collaboration, professional identity, and roles and responsibility. The results revealed that participants considered the upper-grade undergraduate years as the ideal time for imparting IPE, and it was deemed suitable to include communication, simulation, and clinical practice in IPE. Doctors, pharmacists, and physiotherapists were thought to require cooperation for IPE the most. Despite the presence of several barriers to IPE, the participants thought that IPE can achieve learning outcomes such as interprofessional communication and cooperation, conflict resolution, and teamwork. It is necessary to cooperate with professionals in the complex clinical environment as professional areas are specialized and subdivided. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the application of IPE in undergraduate education and in on-the-job training.

The purpose of this study is to identify factors associated with effective peer-assisted learning (PAL) for nursing students. This review examined studies on PAL in nursing education. The literature was searched using terms including ‘nursing & peer assisted learning,’ ‘nursing & peer learning,’ and ‘nursing & peer teaching.’ Potentially relevant research on PAL was identified, and 12 studies were determined to meet the inclusion criteria. This review includes five qualitative, three mixed-methods, and three experimental studies published on the topic. In the studies reviewed, practicum classes were found to use PAL the most. Students of the same age were most commonly the subjects of PAL, as indicated in six papers. PAL has been suggested to affect participants’ knowledge, self-efficacy, confidence, and anxiety. The findings indicate that interactions between peers promote learning and lead to mutually positive responses, which provide opportunities for self-development. Finally, students’ learning outcomes improve and their confidence in their knowledge and skills increases as they experience the role of student nurse. These findings indicate that PAL can be utilized as an efficient learning method in nursing education programs. However, effective strategies for using PAL to achieve learning objectives and maximize learning outcomes are needed.

Background A traditional Korean health behavior regimen, ‘Yangsaeng’ is an ancient Chinese concept that incorporates health promoting behaviours. Aim The purpose of this study was to test a hypothesized model that identified the effects of activity status, internal health locus of control, and resilience on Yangsaeng among patients with cardiovascular disease. Methods Secondary data were utilized in this study. Originally, 543 Korean patients with cardio-vascular disease were recruited from general hospitals, although only 532 were included in this study. Path analysis was performed using AMOS 17.0. Results Resilience was significantly associated with and accounted for 37% of the variance in Yangsaeng. Activity status and internal health locus of control were significantly associated with and accounted for 4% of the variance in resilience. Limitations Given the cross-sectional data used, the sequencing and/or direction of the relationships found remains uncertain. There may be complex interactions that were not considered. Conclusions These results suggest that enhancing resilience is essential to foster a health-promoting lifestyle that helps prevent the recurrence of cardio-vascular disease. Implications for nursing and health policy Nurse development of a Yangsaeng program for patients with cardiovascular disease may be a useful means of enhancing resilience in western as well as eastern cultures. This will help such patients to recognize the health benefits of improving their resilience through heightened activity levels and adopting an internal health locus of control.

To evaluate the existing data on aromatherapy interventions for improvement of sleep quality.Systematic literature review and meta-analysis on the effects of aromatherapy. Study Sources: Electronic databases, including the Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS), Korean studies Information Service System (KISS), National Assembly Library, and eight academies within the Korean Society of Nursing Science, were searched to identify studies published between 2000 and August 2013.Randomized controlled and quasi-experimental trials that included aromatherapy for the improvement of sleep quality. Of the 245 publications identified, 13 studies met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and 12 studies were used in the meta-analysis.Meta-analysis of the 12 studies using a random-effects model revealed that the use of aromatherapy was effective in improving sleep quality (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.540-1.745; Z=3.716). Subgroup analysis revealed that inhalation aromatherapy (95% CI, 0.792-1.541; Z=6.107) was more effective than massage therapy (95% CI, 0.128-2.166; Z=2.205) in unhealthy (95% CI, 0.248-1.100; Z=3.100) and healthy (95% CI, 0.393-5.104; Z=2.287) participants, respectively.Readily available aromatherapy treatments appear to be effective and promote sleep. Thus, it is essential to develop specific guidelines for the efficient use of aromatherapy.

Background A great number of studies have been conducted to examine the relationship between nurse staffing and patient outcomes. However, none of the reviews have rigorously assessed the evidence about the effect of nurse staffing on nurse outcomes through meta-analysis. Purpose The purpose of this review was to systematically assess empirical studies on the relationship between nurse staffing and nurse outcomes through meta-analysis. Methods Published peer-reviewed articles published between January 2000 and November 2016 were identified in CINAHL, PubMed, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, EBSCO, RISS, and DBpia databases. Findings This meta-analysis showed that greater nurse-to-patient ratio was consistently associated with higher degree of burnout among nurses (odds ratio: 1.07; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.04–1.11), increased job dissatisfaction (odds ratio: 1.08; 95% CI: 1.04–1.11), and higher intent to leave (odds ratio: 1.05; 95% CI: 1.02–1.07). With respect to needlestick injury, the overall effect size was 1.33 without statistical significance. Discussion The study findings demonstrate that higher nurse-to-patient ratio is related to negative nurse outcomes. Future studies assessing the optimal nurse-to-patient ratio level in relation to nurse outcomes are needed to reduce adverse nurse outcomes and to help retain nursing staff in hospital settings.

Purpose This study aimed at identifying factors related to persistent postoperative pain after cardiac surgery and estimating their effect sizes. Methods The literature search and selection was conducted in four different databases (CINAHL, Cochrane Library, PubMed, and PQDT) using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Statement. A total of 14 studies met the inclusion criteria and were systematically reviewed. For the meta-analysis, R was used to analyze 30 effect sizes of for both individual and operative factors as well as publication biases from a total of nine studies. Results The meta-analysis revealed that persistent postoperative pain after cardiac surgery was related to one individual factor (gender) and two operative factors (acute postoperative pain and use of the internal mammary artery). Operative factors (OR=5.26) had a larger effect size than individual factors (OR=1.53). Conclusion Female gender, acute pain after surgery, and use of the internal mammary artery are related factors to persistent postoperative pain. The development of interventions focusing on modifiable related factors, such as acute postoperative pain, may help to minimize or prevent PPP after cardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND: Falls are among the most frequent critical health problems for older adults over 65 years of age and often result in consequential injuries. AIM: This study developed a guideline covering risk factors and interventions for falls in order to prevent them from occurring in long-term care facilities. METHODS: This study was grounded in the methodological approach of the Scottish Intercollegiate Guideline Network for establishing evidence-based guidelines: (1) establishment of the target population and scope of the guideline, (2) systematic literature review and critical analysis, (3) determination of the recommendation grade, (4) development of a draft nursing intervention guideline and algorithm, (5) expert evaluation of the draft nursing intervention guideline, and (6) confirmation of the final intervention guideline and completion of the algorithm. RESULTS: The resulting evidence-based fall prevention guideline consists of a three-step factor assessment and a three-step intervention approach. LIMITATIONS: The resulting guideline was based on the literature and clinical experts. Further research is required to test the guideline's feasibility in across long term care facilities. CONCLUSION: This guideline can be used by nurses to screen patients who are at a high risk of falling to provide patient interventions to help prevent falls. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY: Considering the high rate of falls at long-term care facilities and the absence of evidence-based guidelines to prevent them, additional studies on falls at long-term care facilities are necessary. Results:Regarding satisfaction with thecurriculum, 47.0% of studentsof gerontological nursepractitioner education program were "mostlysat- isfied" and 36.0% were "satisfied" with the clinical practicum. Further, 35.0% of the participants regarded the hours(300) for the current clinical practice requiredfor graduation as"quite sufficient."Inaddition, 44.0% of the participants indicatedthattheir self-capabilityasgerontological nursepractitionerswas "satisfactory" and 34.0% reportedthat it was "not satisfactory." Conclusion:Resultsindicate that less than 50% of the studentswere sat- isfied with various aspects of the course suggesting that gerontological nurse practitioner programs be further developed to ensure that individuals adequately fulfill their roles as gerontological nurses after graduation.

Objectives: As chronic sleep deprivation can have devastating effects, sleep disturbances in older adult warrants investigation. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions for insomnia. Methods/ Statistical Analysis: A systematic literature review was used to examine the effectiveness of non-pharmacological therapies on sleep disturbance. We conducted a literature search of Korean and international electronic databases. We reviewed selected 343 publications, 37 studies were analyzed in the meta-analysis. Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software was used to analyze the effect size. Findings: The meta-analysis based on the random effect model showed that the applied interventions improved sleep in older adults (Z = 5.63; 95% CI: 0.55-1.15). Subgroup analysis revealed that exercise was the most effective (95% CI: 0.35-0.88, Z = 4.55), followed by music therapy (95% CI: 0.30-1.16, Z = 3.36). On the contrary, behavior, laughter, massage, and supplementary therapy were not effective. Improvements/Applications: These findings provide comprehensive evidence regarding the efficacy and use of non-pharmacological sleep interventions. Thus, these interventions are available to improve quality of sleep in older adults.

Clinical nurses play a vital role in clinical practice education; thus, it is necessary to help clinical nurses have teaching efficacy through the development and application of systematic education programs.To identify nurses' teaching efficacy for clinical education and analyze the influencing factors of teaching efficacy.The study used a cross-sectional design. We used a convenience sample of 263 nurses from two hospitals. Teaching efficacy, general characteristics, and perception of clinical practice education were collected via self-reported questionnaires. Teaching efficacy was measured using Hwang's (2006) questionnaire, while perception of clinical practice education was measured using the Clinical Nurse Teacher Survey developed by Nishioka et al. (2014). Participants completed the questionnaire directly. The collected data were then analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVAs, and multiple regression analysis with PASW Statistics 18.0.The mean total score of teaching efficacy was 72.5 (range 21-105). The leadership for students subscale had the highest score (3.56±0.59). The factors influencing teaching efficacy were length of clinical career (β=0.26, p0.001) and perceptions of work satisfaction (β=0.20, p=.005), clinical supervisory relationship (β=0.18, p=.010), and nursing at the hospital ward (β=0.13, p=.029). Altogether, these variables explained 28% of the variance in teaching efficacy in nurses.Based on these results, nursing educators might need to develop greater confidence in their knowledge and enhance control of their teaching strategies. Nursing schools and hospitals might need to provide greater support and educational opportunities to nurse clinical practice instructors. Furthermore, constructing a system of cooperation between these colleges and educational hospitals, developing programs to enhance teaching efficacy, and identifying the clinical instructor's role are all necessary to promote clinical practice education.

Background Simulation-based nursing education is an increasingly popular pedagogical approach. It provides students with opportunities to practice their clinical and decision-making skills through various real-life situational experiences. However, simulation approaches fall along a continuum ranging from low-fidelity to high-fidelity simulation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect size of simulation-based educational interventions in nursing and compare effect sizes according to the fidelity level of the simulators through a meta-analysis. Method This study explores the quantitative evidence published in the electronic databases EBSCO, Medline, ScienceDirect, ERIC, RISS, and the National Assembly Library of Korea database. Using a search strategy including the search terms “nursing,” “simulation,” “human patient,” and “simulator,” we identified 2279 potentially relevant articles. Forty studies met the inclusion criteria and were retained in the analysis. Results This meta-analysis showed that simulation-based nursing education was effective in various learning domains, with a pooled random-effects standardized mean difference of 0.70. Subgroup analysis revealed that effect sizes were larger for high-fidelity simulation (0.86), medium-fidelity simulation (1.03), and standardized patients (0.86) than they were for low-fidelity and hybrid simulations. In terms of cognitive outcomes, the effect size was the largest for high-fidelity simulation (0.50). Regarding affective outcome, high-fidelity simulation (0.80) and standardized patients (0.73) had the largest effect sizes. Conclusions These results suggest that simulation-based nursing educational interventions have strong educational effects, with particularly large effects in the psychomotor domain. Since the effect is not proportional to fidelity level, it is important to use a variety of educational interventions to meet all of the educational goals.

Objective—To assess overall speech intelligibility in adolescent cochlear implanted speakers during quiet and multi-speaker babble conditions. Study design—A cross sectional assessment of intelligibility incorporating group (auditory-oral versus total communication speakers), sentence context (high versus low contexts) and background conditions (quiet versus multi-speaker babble). Setting—A camp designed to assess adolescents over a concentrated period of time. Participants: 57 adolescents who participated in an earlier study when they were 8 – 9 years old examining functional outcomes of speech perception, speech production and language were asked to participate in follow-up study. Methods—Speech intelligibility was assessed by asking the adolescents to repeat sentences. Sentences were digitally edited and played to normal hearing listeners who either provided broad transcriptions of sound accuracy or wrote down the words they understood when the sentences were presented in quiet and in multi-speaker babble. Main Outcome Variable—The dependent variables were percent correct consonants, vowels and total words identified. Results—Very few substitutions or omissions occurred,--resulting in high levels of accuracy for consonants and vowels. Speech intelligibility in quiet was significantly greater than in the multispeaker babble condition. Multi-speaker babble decreased performance uniformly across sentence context for the two groups. Conclusion—Accurate consonant production based on measures of substitutions and omissions fails to account for distortions and allophonic variations. Reductions in speech intelligibility relative to the phoneme correct productions suggest the allophonic variations related to distortions may influence naive listener’s ability to understand the speech of profoundly deaf individuals.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a revised version of the clinical critical thinking skills test (CCTS) and to subsequently validate its performance. Methods: This study is a secondary analysis of the CCTS. Data were obtained from a convenience sample of 284 college students in June 2011. Thirty items were analyzed using item response theory and test reliability was assessed. Test-retest reliability was measured using the results of 20 nursing college and graduate school students in July 2013. The content validity of the revised items was analyzed by calculating the degree of agreement between instrument developer intention in item development and the judgments of six experts. To analyze response process validity, qualitative data related to the response processes of nine nursing college students obtained through cognitive interviews were analyzed. Results: Out of initial 30 items, 11 items were excluded after the analysis of difficulty and discrimination parameter. When the 19 items of the revised version of the CCTS were analyzed, levels of item difficulty were found to be relatively low and levels of discrimination were found to be appropriate or high. The degree of agreement between item developer intention and expert judgments equaled or exceeded 50%. Conclusion: From above results, evidence of the response process validity was demonstrated, indicating that subjects respondeds as intended by the test developer. The revised 19-item CCTS was found to have sufficient reliability and validity and will therefore represents a more convenient measurement of critical thinking ability.

Summary Background The use of simulation as an educational tool is becoming increasingly prevalent in nursing education, and a variety of simulators are utilized. Based on the results of these studies, nursing facilitators must find ways to promote effective learning among students in clinical practice and classrooms. Objective To identify the best available evidence about the effects of patient simulation in nursing education through a meta-analysis. Methods This study explores quantitative evidence published in the electronic databases: EBSCO, Medline, ScienceDirect, and ERIC. Using a search strategy, we identified 2503 potentially relevant articles. Twenty studies were included in the final analysis. Results We found significant post-intervention improvements in various domains for participants who received simulation education compared to the control groups, with a pooled random-effects standardized mean difference of 0.71, which is a medium-to-large effect size. In the subgroup analysis, we found that simulation education in nursing had benefits, in terms of effect sizes, when the effects were evaluated through performance, the evaluation outcome was psychomotor skills, the subject of learning was clinical, learners were clinical nurses and senior undergraduate nursing students, and simulators were high fidelity. Conclusions These results indicate that simulation education demonstrated medium to large effect sizes and could guide nurse educators with regard to the conditions under which patient simulation is more effective than traditional learning methods.

Purpose: This integrative review study was done to analyze methods used for validation studies in Korean nursing research. Methods: In this study, the literature on instrument development in nursing research from Research Information Sharing Service (RISS) and major nursing journal databases in Korea were examined. The MeSH search terms included ‘nursing’, ‘instrument’, ‘instrument development’, ‘validation’ and 189 articles were included in the review. Results: The most frequently reported validity type was content validity, followed by construct validity, and criterion validity. One third reported a single type of validity, and 15% of the studies demonstrated three kinds of validity at the same time. In about 40% of the studies, both content and construct validity were examined. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that it is necessary to provide a wider variety of evidence to establish whether instruments are valid enough to use in nursing research.

In this study, to discuss the suitability of the procedure for and elements of the evaluation of nursing education curriculums, study trends for such evaluation were analyzed. The future direction of the evaluation of nursing education curriculums viewed based on the results of previous studies on the evaluation of nursing education curriculums is as follows. Effort to evaluate nursing education programs through the collection of more diverse data is necessary, and since the control of the quality of nursing skills education is very important because of the nature of the specialty, the evaluation should be more practical rather than being limited to the existing conventional accreditation and evaluation methods, specifically reviews of self-evaluation reports and evaluation by visits and interviews.

The aim of this study was to examine the roles of care helpers through job analysis. To do this, this study used the Developing A Curriculum Method (DACUM) to classify job content and a multi-dimensional study design was applied to identify roles and create a job description by looking into the appropriateness, significance, frequency, and difficulty of job content as identified through workshops and cross-sectional surveys conducted for appropriateness verification. A total of 418 care helpers working in nursing facilities and community senior service facilities across the country were surveyed. The collected data were analyzed using PASW 18.0 software. Six duties and 18 tasks were identified based on the job model. Most tasks were found to be ?占퐄mportant task?? scoring 4.0 points or above. Physical care duties, elimination care, position changing and movement assistance, feeding assistance, and safety care were identified as high frequency tasks. The most difficult tasks were emergency prevention, early detection, and speedy reporting. A summary of the job of care helpers is providing physical, emotional, housekeeping, and daily activity assistance to elderly patients with problems in independently undertaking daily activities due to physical or mental causes in long-term care facilities or at the client?占퐏 home. The results of this study suggest a task-focused examination, optimizing the content of the current standard teaching materials authorized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare while supplementing some content which was identified as task elements but not included in the current teaching materials and fully reflecting the actual frequency and difficulty of tasks.

【Purpose: This research was conducted to examine the relationship of knowledge, health beliefs, and self-efficacy on osteoporosis. Method: The design of this study was a correlative design. The subjects were 1,615 Korean adults over the age of 20 registered in a new town and participants were asked to fill in a questionnaire developed by Kim, Horan & Gendler (1991), translated into Korean. Results: 1) The subjects recorded an average score of 1l.10 on osteoporosis knowledge. The average scores on the osteoporosis health beliefs was 15.68 for perceived susceptibility and the respondents recorded an average score of 40.40 for osteoporosis self-efficacy. 2) There were statistically significant differences in the degree of osteoporosis knowledge, self-efficacy and health belief according to gender, age, scholastic achievement, marital state, and jobs. 3) There were statistically significant positive correlations between osteoporosis knowledge and self-efficacy. Conclusion: According to these results, an osteoporosis education program improving not only knowledge but also self-efficacy and health beliefs should be developed and applied to decrease the perception of barriers to exercise and intake of calcium.】

This research was conducted to determine the effects of a fall prevention program on knowledge, self-efficacy, prevention activity, and depression in the low-income elderly women.The design of this study was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. There were 22 subjects in the experimental group and 22 in the control group. A fall prevention program was performed for approximately 40 minutes, once a week for 6 weeks.The results of this study were as follows: There were statistically significant differences of knowledge, self-efficacy, and prevention activity related to falls and depression between the experimental group and control group.In conclusion, the fall prevention program used in this study is appropriate for the elderly, therefore this program is strongly recommended for community-based health and welfare centers.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences Quality of Life(QOL) according to menopausal symptoms in middle aged women. Method The subjects consisted of 578 women(45-60 years old) residing in urban area by convenience sampling from March 15 to May 30, 2002. The data were collected by structured questionnaire that included general characteristics, menopausal symptoms and QOL scale. the collected data were analyzed by the SPSS 11.0 program that included descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA. Result The averaged age of menopause of subjects was 48.29+/-4.66 years and 74.8% in the subjects complained menopausal symptoms. As for the orders of complained menopausal symptom, it was fatigue, hot flashes, benumbed hands and feet, and irritability. The mean score of the QOL scale was showing above average level of quality of life. Religion was significantly different to the score for activity of QOL, monthly income was different to the score for activity and physical well-being of QOL. Menopausal status was significantly different to the QOL. Conclusion This study suggests that a replicate study is needed. The results are also useful in developing various programs for health promotion of middle aged women.

Purpose: The purpose of current study was to explore the positive outcomes of advanced practice nurse who have experienced the roles in their clinical settings. Methods: This study adopted a qualitative research design based on conventional content analysis. Participants were 16 nurse practitioners have been worked at hospitals or community centers. Data were collected via focus group interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis method. Results: Patients’ aspect outcomes were “client-centered care in providing continuity”, “providing trust based on expertise”, “promoting skilled intervention in patient recovering”, “blocking the negative consequences”, “quality improvement: nursing becoming tighter”, “providing total care for cases that require intensive care”, “improving patients outcomes by total management”, “increasing confidence in evidence-based professional nursing”, “rising the satisfaction by cost-effective services”, “providing skilled professional practice”, and “providing comprehensive care related to covering various aspects.” Other themes elicited also included “promoting efficacy by inter-related health professions supervising”, “the expansion of specialized practice areas increase business efficiency”, “formation of outside customers due to increasing the satisfaction with skilled nursing care”, “filling in the emptying spaces of doctors by practicing reliable role to bridge”, “attracting external customers through successful management of subjects”, “increasing staff’s satisfaction on the role to make a bridge between inside and outside doctors”, “24 hours medical expertise of professional staff ready secured”, and “low cost, same results, that is, cost-effective” in reference to health care resources aspect. Conclusion: These findings suggested that advanced practice nurses perceived various positive outcomes and provided basic data for outcome indicators of advanced practice nurses’ role.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify congruence between self-perception and objective status of obesity according to %Fat, and to investigate health promotion lifestyle in college women. Methods: The participants were a convenience sample of 392 college women who were eligible and agreed to participate in this study. Respondents were asked questions using a health promotion lifestyle profile and were evaluated for their body composition using InBody 3.0. The data were analyzed with SPSS 14.0 program, which was used for Chi square, ANOVA, and post-hoc comparison with Scheffe. Results: The major findings were as follows; 1) Overall, 41.8% of participants misclassified their perceived status of weight by %Fat standards and kappa was 0.329. 2) Two percent were underweight by BMI but overweight by %Fat and 39.0% normal weight by BMI but overweight by %Fat. 3) There were significant differences in health promotion lifestyle according to self-perception of body weight but there was no difference in health promotion lifestyle according to %Fat standards. Conclusion: These findings suggest the necessity for development and application of tailored health promotion program based on self-perception of body weight and %Fat in order to reform incorrect body image and health behavior in college women.

The purpose of this study was to examine the pattern of alternative therapy by the elderly. The data were collected from 15–25 May 2001 in Seoul, Korea. The instrument, developed by Shin (2000), was used to examine the patterns of alternative therapy. The collected data were analyzed by using the sas program. The findings revealed: 1 Over 66% (66.84%) of the elderly used alternative therapy. 2 In regard to the mind–body technique, exercise (19.85%) and praying or Bul-Gong (16.79%) were most favored. Sa-Gol (42.75%), ginseng (24.43%), and nok-yong (24.43%) were the most favorable of the dietary therapies. Of the manual healing methods, ordinary acupuncture (48.83%), physical therapy (24.43%), moxibustion (20.61%) and hand acupuncture (12.98%) were most favored. 3 The greatest satisfaction of the alternative therapies was ordinary acupuncture (14.50%). 4 The rate of using alternative therapy was significantly different in regard to gender (P = 0.0493). It was concluded that alternative therapies may be effective independent nursing interventions to use with the elderly.
