Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is a perioperative management protocol used to accelerate patient recovery. This study evaluated its benefits in patients with resectable esophageal cancer.This retrospective study compared patients before (January 2013 to December 2016) and after (June 2018 to December 2020) ERAS protocol implementation in our hospital. A propensity score-matched analysis was used to compare short-term surgical outcomes between ERAS and non-ERAS groups. After propensity score matching each group included 243 patients.There were significant differences in hospital length of stay after surgery (7.40 vs 11.17 days, P.001) and hospitalization cost (¥69380 vs ¥78075, P.001) between the ERAS and non-ERAS groups. The time to chest tube removal (4.91 vs 7.16 days, P.001) and first bowel movement (2.87 vs 3.97 days, P.001) was significantly shorter in the ERAS group. However there was no significant difference in total postoperative complication morbidity (20.2% vs 25.1%, P = .193). The complication of postoperative atelectasis or pneumonia was significantly lower in the ERAS group (P = .003), but there was no significant difference in occurrence of at least grade III complications between the 2 groups (12.3% vs 11.5%, P = .889).We demonstrated that ERAS could reduce hospital stay, numerical pain scores, and hospitalization costs without increasing postoperative complication and readmission. Furthermore subgroup analyses revealed that ERAS was safe for older people (70 years old).

Background Exosomal long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been recognised as promising stable biomarkers in cancers. The aim of this study was to identify an exosomal lncRNA panel for diagnosis and prognosis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Materials and Methods Exosomes were isolated from serum by ExoQuick Solution. To validate the exosomes, exosomal markers and characterization of nanoparticle were performed. Quantitative real-time PCR was used to measure the levels of lncRNAs in exosomes from ESCC patients and healthy subjects. In the training set, exosomal lncRNA profiles from 404 samples were conducted and established new models by multivariate logistic regression. In the validation set, the diagnostic performance of the panel was further validated in 222 additional individuals with a receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC). Kaplan-Meier and multivariate Cox proportional hazards analysis were applied to assess the correlation between lncRNAs and survival rate of ESCC patients. Results A 4-lncRNA panel (UCA1, POU3F3, ESCCAL-1 and PEG10) in exosomes for ESCC diagnosis was developed by logistic regression model. The diagnostic accuracy of panel was evaluated with AUC value of 0.844 and 0.853 for training and validation stage, respectively. Introduction: Dyslipidemia is a common intermediate aggravating factor of various cancers, but the relationship between blood lipid profiles and lung cancer remains unclear. This study was performed to assess the non-linear and linear relationships between them.Material and methods: We enrolled 1593 newly diagnosed lung cancer patients and 1593 age- and sex-matched healthy controls between 2017 and 2019. Biochemical indicators, including lipid profiles and tumor markers, were collected. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated using conditional logistic regression analysis. The restricted cubic spline analysis and multiple linear regression were used to explore the non-linear and linear associations.Results: Lung cancer patients had lower values for total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). After multivariate adjustment, hyper-TC and low-HDL-C were associated with lung cancer risk. In addition, non-linear relationships were identified between lung cancer risk and TC/HDL-C. Multiple linear regression analyses showed that triglycerides were significantly associated with squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCC). As well, HDL-C was significantly associated with neuron-specific enolase (NSE), cytokeratin 19 fragments (CYFRA21-1), SCC, and tumor-associated antigen 125 (CA-125). Significant linear trends were observed between increasing triglyceride quartiles and hyper-NSE/hyper-CYFRA21-1, and between increasing HDL-C quartiles and hyper-NSE/hyper-CYFRA21-1/hyper-CA-125. Conclusions: Lipid levels were significantly lower in lung cancer patients, and there were negative non-linear associations of TC and HDL-C with lung cancer risk. In addition, there were negative linear trends across TG and HDL-C quartiles for the risk of abnormal tumor markers among lung cancer patients.

Lung cancer is the first leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common type of lung cancer. Increasing evidence shows that long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) are capable of modulating tumor initiation, proliferation and metastasis. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate whether circulating lncRNA could be used as biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis of NSCLC. Expression profiles of 14 lncRNA selected from other studies were validated in 20 pairs of tissues by quantitative real‐time PCR, and the dysregulated lncRNA thus identified were further validated in serum samples from two independent cohorts along with three tumor makers (CEA, CYFRA21‐1, and SCCA). Receiver‐operating characteristic analysis was utilized to estimate the diagnostic efficiency of the candidate lncRNA and tumor markers. Objective. This Work is aimed at exploring the effect of microRNA (MiR)-608 on the function of nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) A549 cells and related mechanisms. Methods. Blood samples of 106 NSCLC patients (experimental group) as well as 124 normal people (control group) were selected for relevant investigation. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) as well as DNA sequencing was used to determine the genotyping of the MiR-608 rs4919510 polymorphism. MiR-608 expression in cells was detected by real-time PCR technology. Western blotting was used to detect changes in protein levels. NSCLC tissues as well as adjacent tissues were explored in 33 patients undergoing surgery. Results. MiR-608 rs4919510 does not influence the incidence of NSCLC patients. In addition, MiR-608 expression was downregulated in the tumor tissue of NSCLC patients, while the transcription factor activating enhancer-binding protein 4 (TFAP4) expression was upregulated. MiR-608 promotes DOX- (Doxorubicin-) induced apoptosis by negatively regulating TFAP4 expression in NSCLC tissue. TFAP4 can significantly inhibit the migration of A549 cells. Conclusion. The findings in this investigation can contribute to the effective treatment of NSCLC patients. Also, the investigation can provide some theoretical support for the application of new targets for NSCLC treatment.

Selecting a solar greenhouse type that suits local conditions is an important issue for the development of protected horticulture in Northern China. In this study, type selection was treated as a multi-objective fuzzy decision-making problem. According to building features and microclimate, an assessment framework system was constructed that consisted of four levels: objective level (A), criteria hierarchy (B), sub-criteria hierarchy (C), and alternatives (D). The indicators for sub-criteria hierarchy were first quantified by a set of formulas and survey of experts. The surveyed data were classified using the Analysis Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. Next, the weights of the indicators were obtained from 15 experts. The results show that the weight of structure safety (B2) is the highest, while the aesthetic property is the lowest in the criteria hierarchy. In the sub-criteria hierarchy, the weight of structural stability (C4), useful life (C5) and land utilization (C11) are higher than others. A case study was performed for northern Jiangsu province to screen out the optimal solar greenhouse types that suit the local conditions using his methodology. The result suggests that the method of multi-objective fuzzy decision-making and classical AHP could be used to deal with the selection of solar greenhouse designs.

The conventional video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is performed through the intercostals incisions. In this study, we reported our current experience of thoracoscopic surgery using a subxiphoid single-incision and compared it with the intercostal uniport VATS in the operation time and postoperative pain for spontaneous pneumothorax.From July 2014 to September 2015, 43 consecutive patients with spontaneous pneumothorax underwent the unilateral or bilateral bullectomy vie VATS. Among these, 22 patients were treated by the subxiphoid single-incision VATS, and 21 patients were treated using the conventional intercostals uniport VATS. The duration of operation, hospital stay days and inpatient pain scores were compared between each group.The postoperative pain scores on postoperative days (POD) 0, 1, 2 and 3 were significantly lower for patients who underwent the subxiphoid single-incision VATS than those who underwent the intercostal uniport VATS (p 0.05). However, the subxiphoid single-incision VATS needed longer surgical time than the intercostal uniport VATS (p 0.001).The subxiphoid uniport VATS could decrease the postoperative pain and was safe and effective for performing the unilateral or bilateral bullectomy, but, demanded longer surgical time comparing with the intercostal uniport VATS.Subxiphoid single-incision VATS, as a new method for bullectomy, could provide a good choice of the incision position for these young patients with spontaneous pneumothorax.

BACKGROUND: The triangulating stapling (TST) and T-shape stapling (TS) methods have been proposed to decrease the incidence of anastomotic leakage after esophagectomy, but few studies have compared them to the circular stapling technique (CS). This retrospective study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of three cervical anastomosis methods after esophagectomy. METHODS: Squamous cell carcinoma patients who underwent minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) with CS, TST or TS anastomosis between April 2010 and June 2012 were recruited. Their clinical characteristics and short-term outcome were analyzed. Kaplan-Meier analyses compared with log-rank test were used to calculate the effect of the three types of cervical anastomosis on overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). RESULTS: The incidence of anastomotic leakage was 21.8% in the CS group, 7.7% in the TS group and 11.9% in the TST group (P=0.029). Exosome-shuttled bioactive miRNAs act as novel non-invasive biomarkers for cancer diagnosis have received increasing attention. In this study, we aimed to investigate the expression signatures of exosomal miRNAs and develop a serum exosome-derived miRNA panel for diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The miR-17-92 cluster including 6 miRNAs (miR-17-5p, miR-18a-5p, miR-19a-3p, miR-19b-1-5p, miR-20a-5p and miR-92a-1-5p) was selected as potential diagnostic candidate molecule. Then, expression profiles of the candidate miRNAs were firstly analyzed in 43 pairs of serum samples from the training set by quantitative real-time PCR, and the dysregulated miRNA along with three tumor markers (carcinoembryonic antigen, CEA; cytokeratin 19 fragment, CYFRA21-1; squamous cell carcinoma antigen, SCCA) were further validated in two independent cohorts, which consisted of training set (including 100 NSCLC patients and 90 healthy controls) and validation set (including 72 NSCLC patients and 47 healthy controls). The expression of miR-17-5p was significantly up-regulated in NSCLC patients compared with the healthy controls (P0.001), suggesting that miR-17-5p might have considerable clinical value in the diagnosis of NSCLC. Based on the data from the training set, we next used a logistic regression model to construct a 4-molecule panel consisting of miR-17-5p and three tumor markers for NSCLC diagnosis. The performance of such 4-molecule panel was verified with an area under the ROC curve of 0.860 (95% CI = 0.802 to 0.906, sensitivity = 63.0% and specificity = 93.3%) and 0.844 (95% CI = 0.766 to 0.904, sensitivity = 76.4% and specificity = 76.6%) in the training set and validation set, respectively. In conclusion, the newly developed diagnostic panel consisting of exosomal miR-17-5p, CEA, CYFRA21-1 and SCCA may have considerable clinical value in the diagnosis of NSCLC.

Chinese solar greenhouse is the most common protected horticulture facility in China. The design of solar greenhouses has been evolving but few designs were based on solid engineering analyses and extensive field testing. This article analyzed three aspects that contribute to their good thermal performance: high solar transmittance of the South facing roof due to limited structural and equipment shading, interception and heat buffering of solar radiation by opaque walls and ground, and good insulation of the North facing roof, wall, and sidewalls. A mathematical model is presented to predict and evaluate the thermal environment of solar greenhouses. The model is based on the heat balance and the heat exchange between the system components. Simulations and analyses using the solar greenhouse model suggest the following: 1) materials with good heat insulation should be used for the outer layer of walls, and those with high thermal conductivity and volumetric specific heat should be used for the inner layer, 2) the gained benefits in terms of air temperature and heat flows released from walls to the inside air start to become marginal as the wall thickness increases, and3)by lowering indoor ground the thermal environment of solar greenhouses can be greatly improved. An optimal wall thickness can be determined by weighing the improvements of the thermal environment against the increase in cost associated with material selection and construction.

The purposes of the present study were to detect the expression of metastasis-associated protein 1 (MTA1) in patients with esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC), and to evaluate the relevance of MTA1 protein expression to the tumor progression, angiogenesis, and prognosis. Both MTA1 protein and intratumoral microvessels were examined by immunohistochemical staining in 131 ESCC patients who successfully underwent subtotal esophagectomy and esophagogastric anastomosis at Qilu Hospital between Jan 2004 and Dec 2005. Intratumoral microvessel density (MVD) was recorded by counting CD-34 positive immunostained endothelial cells. All statistical analyses were performed with SPSS 13.0 statistical software. High expression of MTA1 protein was detected in 57 cases and significantly correlated with tumor invasion depth (P = 0.041), lymph node metastasis (P = 0.021), pathologic stage (P = 0.003), and MVD (P = 0.044). Survival analysis showed that patients with MTA1 protein high expression had significantly poor overall 5-year survival (P = 0.002), and the factor found on multivariate analysis to significantly affect overall survival was only pathologic stage (P = 0.040). Further stratified survival analysis split by pathologic stage demonstrated that MTA1 protein high expression significantly predicted unfavorable prognosis among patients with pathologic stage II disease (P = 0.006). High expression of the MTA1 protein is common in ESCC, and is closely associated with tumor progression, increased tumor angiogenesis, and poor survival. These findings indicate that MTA1 protein has clinical potentials as a useful indicator of progressive phenotype, a promising prognostic predictor to identify patients with poor prognosis, and a potential novel therapeutic target of antiangiogenesis for patients with ESCC.

This paper considers two additional factors of the widely researched vehicle routing problem with time windows (VRPTW). The two factors, which are very common characteristics in realworld, are uncertain number of vehicles and simultaneous delivery and pick-up service. Using minimization of the total transport costs as the objective of the extension VRPTW, a mathematic model is constructed. To solve the problem, an efficient multiswarm cooperative particle swarm optimization (MCPSO) algorithm is applied. And a new encoding method is proposed for the extension VRPTW. Finally, comparing with genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, the MCPSO algorithm performs best for solving this problem.

Accurate ventilation rate (VR) data are essential to maximizing the quality of aerial emission measurements. The Fan Assessment Numeration System (FANS) has been widely used by U.S. researchers in measuring aerial emissions from mechanically ventilated livestock and poultry facilities. The FANS device is used to measure airflow rates of ventilation fans in situ, thereby developing fan performance curves under field conditions. The FANS device was originally intended to be placed upstream of the fan to be calibrated. However, certain field situations make it impractical to apply the FANS device as such. This study was conducted to assess use of the FANS device downstream of a ventilation fan, with the gaps between the FANS device and the discharge cone of the exhaust fan sealed using a non-permeable fabric. Nine exhaust fans (1.22 or 1.32 m diameter) in laying hen and turkey houses were tested with the FANS device placed upstream and downstream for a building static pressure range of 10 to 40 Pa. The results revealed that downstream placement of the FANS device yielded 0.6% ±0.4% to 4.0% ±0.9 % (mean ±SE) higher but not significantly different (P > 0.28) VR values as compared to upstream placement for the exhaust fans tested. This magnitude of discrepancy is considered acceptable for in situ measurement of fan performance.

In this paper, we introduce a new type of field—continuous sets, where we can exploit randomness in the non-repeating decimal expansions of irrationals for cryptographical purposes, and present two specific sets, a real interval [0, 1) and a functional space F [0, 1) . On [0, 1), we propose ideal irrational random number generator (IIRNG) which generates non-repeating random number sequence as a truly RNG by computing the decimal expansion of an randomly chosen irrational. On F [0, 1) , we propose integral encryption scheme (IES) with which we can encrypt an infinite message and obtain perfect security in one-time encryption by computing the integration of the message on a randomly chosen function. Either the seeds of IIRNG or the keys of IES are sufficiently safe and immune to exhaustive key search. Both IIRNG and IES require the assumption that an element of [0, 1) or F [0, 1) can be uniformly randomly chosen. Though the assumption cannot be achieved in classical finite machine, we present the discretization of the assumption, i.e., randomly choosing an element of U or V (the set of all possible methods of generating irrationals or functions). The immunity of seeds or keys to exhaustive key search still exists, since any finite search for a random element of U or V is inefficient. This is the basic idea of implementing IIRNG and IES in finite machine. Two corresponding examples IRNG and IBC are also presented, whose securities are guaranteed by the randomly chosen elements of U or V .

Based on previous findings regarding the angiogenic activities and prognostic roles of metastasis-associated protein 1 (MTA1) in early-stage non-small cell lung cancer, the clinicopathological and prognostic significance of MTA1 protein expression, and its correlation with angiogenesis in lung invasive adenocarcinoma, were further assessed in the present study, according to the 2011 International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer/American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society classification. High protein expression levels of MTA1 were commonly observed in patients with lung invasive adenocarcinoma, and were significantly correlated with tumor size (P=0.030), lymph node metastasis (P=0.021) and microvessel density (P=0.015). Survival analysis demonstrated that patients with high protein expression levels of MTA1 exhibited significantly shorter five-year disease-free and overall survival than those patients whose protein expression levels of MTA1 were low (24.5% vs. 48.7%, P=0.001, and 34.7% vs. 59.2%, P=0.005, respectively). In addition, Cox regression multivariate analysis demonstrated that high protein expression levels of MTA1 significantly correlated with unfavorable five-year disease-free survival (P=0.024). These findings indicate that MTA1 protein expression may possess clinical potential as an indicator of progressive phenotype. Therefore, MTA1 is a promising prognostic predictor to identify subgroups of patients with high risk of relapse, and a potentially novel therapeutic target for antiangiogenesis in patients with lung invasive adenocarcinoma.

Background The study was designed to detect the expression level of thimet oligopeptidase (THOP1) protein in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and investigate its correlation with clinicopathologic features and prognosis. Methods Immunohistochemical staining was used to determine the expression of THOP1 protein in 120 NSCLC specimens and 53 distant normal lung tissues. Quantitative real-time PCR and western blotting were employed to measure the expression of THOP1 in 16 pairs of primary NSCLC and corresponding normal tissues. Results Analysis of immunohistochemical staining suggested low THOP1 expression was found in 71 (59.2%) of the 120 NSCLC specimens and significantly correlated with positive lymph node metastasis (P = 0.048). However, low THOP1 expression was found in 22 (41.5%) of the 53 normal lung tissues. Chi-square test suggested that the expression of THOP1 was significantly higher in the normal lung tissues than that in the NSCLC specimens (P = 0.032). Real-Time PCR and western blotting showed that NSCLC specimens had decreased THOP1 mRNA and protein expression compared to corresponding normal tissues. Univariate analysis demonstrated that low THOP1 expression significantly predicted decreased 5-year disease-free survival (P = 0.038) and overall survival (P = 0.017). In addition, positive lymph node metastasis (P = 0.025) and advanced TNM stage (P = 0.009) significantly predicted decreased 5-year overall survival. However, multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that only low THOP1 expression retained its significance as an independent prognostic factor for unfavorable 5-year disease-free survival (P = 0.046) and overall survival (P = 0.021). Conclusions THOP1 may have clinical potentials to be employed as a promising biomarker to identify individuals with better prognosis and a novel antitumor agent for therapy of patients with NSCLC.

Background Sirtuin1 (SIRT1) is an NAD+-dependent type III histone deacetylase (HDAC). This research investigated the prevalence of SIRT1 protein expression and its prognostic influence with the aim of validating its potential role in lymphangiogenesis and lymphovascular invasion (LVI) in pN0 esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Methods A total of 206 patients were enrolled in this retrospective study. SIRT1 and VEGF-C protein expression was detected by immunohistochemical staining. Peritumoral lymphatic microvessel density (LVD) and LVI were evaluated by immunostaining for D2-40. Statistical analysis was then preformed to investigate the relevance of SIRT1 expression and various clinicopathologic features and to examine the effect of SIRT1 on tumor-induced lymphangiogenesis, LVI and prognosis. Background Pathological angiogenesis plays an essential role in tumor aggressiveness and leads to unfavorable prognosis. The aim of this study is to detect the potential role of Retinoblastoma binding protein 2 (RBP2) in the tumor angiogenesis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods Immunohistochemical staining was used to detect the expression of RBP2, hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and CD34. Two pairs of siRNA sequences and pcDNA3-HA-RBP2 were used to down-regulate and up-regulate RBP2 expression in H1975 and SK-MES-1 cells. An endothelial cell tube formation assay, VEGF enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, real-time PCR and western blotting were performed to detect the potential mechanisms mediated by RBP2 in tumor angiogenesis. Results Of the 102 stage I NSCLC specimens analyzed, high RBP2 protein expression is closely associated with tumor size (P = 0.030), high HIF-1α expression (P = 0.028), high VEGF expression (P = 0.048), increased tumor angiogenesis (P = 0.033) and poor prognosis (P = 0.037); high MVD was associated with high HIF-1α expression (P = 0.034), high VEGF expression (P = 0.001) and poor prognosis (P = 0.040). Multivariate analysis indicated that RBP2 had an independent influence on the survival of patients with stage I NSCLC (P = 0.044). By modulating the expression of RBP2, our findings suggested that RBP2 protein depletion decreased HUVECs tube formation by down-regulating VEGF in a conditioned medium. RBP2 stimulated the up-regulation of VEGF, which was dependent on HIF-1α, and activated the HIF-1α via phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt signaling pathway. Moreover, VEGF increased the activation of Akt regulated by RBP2. Conclusions The RBP2 protein may stimulate HIF-1α expression via the activation of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway under normoxia and then stimulate VEGF expression. These findings indicate that RBP2 may play a critical role in tumor angiogenesis and serve as an attractive therapeutic target against tumor aggressiveness for early-stage NSCLC patients.

Traditionally, distributed system software developers print log messages when creating a program to track the runtime status of a system to help identify where problems may have occurred while the program is running. People often use system logs produced by distributed systems for troubleshooting and problem diagnosis. However, there may be thousands of failed jobs occurring within a short time. Manually inspecting these jobs one by one to detect anomalies is unfeasible due to the increasing scale and complexity of distributed systems. Since many failed jobs may have the same cause, there is a great demand for automatic job categorization techniques based on log analysis to help developers prioritize job investigation. Described herein is an unstructured log analysis technique for job categorization. In the technique, we propose a novel algorithm to categorize log messages into different categories without heavily relying on application specific knowledge, based on which jobs can be categorized. The aims of this work are to detect the expression levels of metastasis-associated protein 1 (MTA1) in patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and to investigate the relationship of MTA1 protein with clinicopathologic factors, tumor angiogenesis, and prognosis. One hundred and two patients with pathologic stage I NSCLC who successfully underwent curative surgical resection were enrolled in this study. Immunohistochemical staining for MTA1 and CD34 was performed using the streptavidin–peroxidase method, and intratumoral microvessel density (MVD) was recorded by counting CD34-positive immunostained endothelial cells. All statistical analyses were performed with SPSS statistical software to determine the effects of MTA1 protein on clinicopathologic factors, tumor angiogenesis, and prognosis. MTA1 protein overexpression was detected in 41 cases and was significantly associated with MVD (P = 0.008). MTA1 protein overexpression and high MVD were significantly associated with tumor relapse (P = 0.004 and 0.007) and poor 5-year disease-free survival (P = 0.001 and 0.004). Patients with MTA1 protein overexpression and high MVD had significantly poor overall survival (P = 0.005 and 0.043) and disease-specific survival (P = 0.006 and 0.031) at 5 years after operation. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that MTA1 protein overexpression was an independent prognosticator for unfavorable disease-free, overall, and disease-specific survival (P = 0.011, 0.024, and 0.046). MTA1 protein overexpression is common in early-stage NSCLC and is significantly associated with tumor angiogenesis and poor survival. These findings suggest that MTA1 may have clinical potential as a promising predictor to identify individuals with poor prognostic potential and as a possible novel target molecule of antiangiogenic therapy for patients with early-stage NSCLC.

Accurate ventilation rate data are essential to maximizing the quality of aerial emission measurements. The fan assessment numeration system (FANS) devices have been widely used by U.S. researchers in measuring aerial emissions from mechanically ventilated livestock and poultry confinement. It is used to conduct in-situ calibration of building ventilation fans and thus development of the fan performance curve under the field operation conditions. The FANS device was originally intended to be placed in the upstream of the fan under in-situ calibration. However, certain field situations make it impractical to apply the FANS device as such. This study assessed the possible use of the FANS in the downstream of a ventilation fan, with the gaps between the FANS device and the discharge cone of the exhaust fan sealed by non-permeable fabric. Nine exhaust fans (1.22 - 1.32 m diameter) in laying-hen and turkey houses were tested with the FANS placed in upstream or downstream for a building static pressure range of 10 to 40 Pa. The results revealed that downstream placement of FANS device yielded 0.44 to 3.1% higher ventilation rate when compared to its upstream placement. This discrepancy is considered acceptable for in-situ fan calibration.
