Bi2S3-based alloys are considered promising thermoelectric materials due to their large Seebeck coefficient and low lattice thermal conductivity. However, low electrical conductivity usually leads to poor electrical transport properties, which seriously restricts their further application in thermoelectric refrigeration and/or power generation. In this work, Bi2S3 with high electrical transport properties is synthesized hydrothermally via Se and Cl co-doping. The maximum electrical conductivity value of 483 S cm−1 was obtained for the Bi2S2.4Se0.4Cl0.20 sample at room temperature. The significant improvement of electrical conductivity gives rise to a high average power factor of 411 μW m−1 K−2 during the measuring temperature range and a peak value of 456 μW m−1 K−2 at 673 K. Benefiting from the largely improved electrical transport properties, a superior ZT value of approximately 0.66 and ZTave. of 0.36 were obtained for Bi2S2.4Se0.4Cl0.20, and the theoretically calculated conversion efficiency reached 5.7%. The results indicate that Bi2S3 is a promising candidate for thermoelectric applications at medium temperatures.

Nanoparticle-mediated laser-induced breakdown (LIB) can be used for Nanoparticle synthesis, cell nanosurgery and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). To investigate the photo-thermal conversion of gold nanoparticles during pulsed laser irradiation, the electron-phonon two-temperature model was established in this study. The impact of laser energy density and pulse width on the thermal conversion and morphology change of gold nanorods were investigated and compared with experimental observations. The results show that the melting threshold of gold nanorods under nanosecond laser irradiation is about twenty times that of femtosecond laser irradiation. The mechanisms of nanorod fragmentation are different between fem to and nanosecond laser irradiation: particle melting is more likely to occur in nanosecond laser irradiation, while the Coulomb explosion is highly likely to occur in femtosecond laser irradiation.

Postvaccination serologic testing (PVST) is utilized to monitor the success or failure of vaccination against hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in infants of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positive mothers. This secondary analysis of 1255 infants of HBsAg-positive mothers at 7–14 months age included in two prospective studies aimed to determine the optimal interval for PVST after three hepatitis B vaccine doses. HBsAg and anti-HBs were quantitatively tested with microparticle enzyme immunoassay. The average PVST interval was 3.8 ± 2.2 months. Overall, 1.7% (21/1255) infants had anti-HBs

The most serious and common complication of the medication recommended by World Health Organization (WHO) for tuberculosis (TB) is anti-tuberculosis drugs-induced hepatotoxicity (ATDH). Pregnane X receptor (PXR) is a key factor of ATDH, while Hepatocyte nuclear factor 4α (HNF4α) and hepatocyte nuclear factor 4 alpha-antisense-1 (HNF4α-AS1) may have co-regulating relationship with PXR. This study aimed to explore whether the genetic variants of HNF4α and HNF4α-AS1 are associated with the predisposition of ATDH.TB patients diagnosed in West China Hospital between December 2014 and April 2018 were enrolled. TagSNPs in HNF4α and HNF4α-AS1 gene from the samples of the patients were genotyped with a custom-designed 2×48-plex SNP ScanTM Kit. The frequencies of the alleles, genotypes, genetic models and haplotype distribution of the variants were compared between the case and control groups. The association between SNP and ATDH risk was assessed by single factor logistic regression.Logistic regression analysis showed that none of the 15 genetic variants in HNF4α and HNF4α-AS1 genes were significantly associated with susceptibility to ATDH in the Chinese Han population after Bonferroni correction.A challenge has arisen to the promising application of SNPs in the HNF4α and HNF4α-AS1 genes as genetic markers for ATDH, and further study is needed with a larger sample size.

Blood vessel dysfunction causes several retinal diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, familial exudative vitreoretinopathy, macular degeneration and choroidal neovascularization in pathological myopia. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-neutralizing proteins provide benefits in most of those diseases, yet unsolved haemorrhage and frequent intraocular injections still bothered patients. Here, we identified endothelial CD146 as a new target for retinal diseases. CD146 expression was activated in two ocular pathological angiogenesis models, a laser-induced choroid neovascularization model and an oxygen-induced retinopathy model. The absence of CD146 impaired hypoxia-induced cell migration and angiogenesis both in cell lines and animal model. Preventive or therapeutic treatment with anti-CD146 antibody AA98 significantly inhibited hypoxia-induced aberrant retinal angiogenesis in two retinal disease models. Mechanistically, under hypoxia condition, CD146 was involved in the activation of NFκB, Erk and Akt signalling pathways, which are partially independent of VEGF. Consistently, anti-CD146 therapy combined with anti-VEGF therapy showed enhanced impairment effect of hypoxia-induced angiogenesis in vitro and in vivo. Given the critical role of abnormal angiogenesis in retinal and choroidal diseases, our results provide novel insights into combinatorial therapy for neovascular fundus diseases.

Background: Quantification of viral antigens and viral loads in human milk samples from mothers infected with hepatitis B virus is largely unknown. Research Aim: The aim of the study was to quantitatively measure the levels of viral antigens and deoxyribonucleic acid of hepatitis B virus in human milk from mothers infected with hepatitis B virus. Methods: Fifty-five pairs of milk and serum samples from mothers with positive hepatitis B surface antigen, including 11 hepatitis B e antigen positive, were quantitatively tested to measure viral antigens by microparticle enzyme immunoassay and viral loads by real-time polymerase chain reaction assay. Results: The median level of hepatitis B surface antigen in the human milk samples of mothers with positive or negative hepatitis B e antigen was each lower than that in the sera, respectively (1.10 vs. 4.32 log10 IU/ml, t = 10.693, p < .001; -0.77 vs. 2.53 log10 IU/ml, t = -25.135, p < .001). The titers of hepatitis B surface antigen or hepatitis B e antigen in the human milk samples were each correlated with that in maternal serum. The detectable level of deoxyribonucleic acid of hepatitis B virus in human milk ranged from 1.42–5.27 log10 IU/ml, whereas that in maternal sera was 1.44–8.66 log10 IU/ml. The viral level in human milk was not correlated with that in maternal circulation. Conclusion: The present study data illustrate the relatively low titers of viral markers in the milk of mothers with positive hepatitis B surface antigen.

Background Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a major cause of the development of progressive chronic kidney disease (CKD), while the mechanism is still unknown. LncRNA PVT1 contributes to kidney injury. This study aimed to explore the role of PVT1 in the development of CKD in CHF patients. Methods Expression of PVT1 in plasma samples of CHF patients with and without CKD was determined by RT-qPCR. The diagnostic value of plasma PVT1 for CKD was evaluated by ROC curve analysis. The predictive value of PVT1 for the development of CKD in CHF patients was analyzed by a 2-year follow-up study. Changes in PVT1 expression in CKD patients during treatment were analyzed by RT-qPCR and reflected by heatmaps. Results Plasma PVT1 was downregulated in CHF and further downregulated in CHF patients complicated with progressive CKD. ROC curve analysis showed that plasma PVT1 levels could be used to distinguish CHF patients complicated with CKD from CHF patients without CKD and healthy controls. During a 2-year follow-up, patients with high CHF levels had a low incidence of progressive CKD among CHF patients. Moreover, with the treatment of progressive CKD, plasma PVT1 was upregulated. Conclusions LncRNA-PVT1 downregulation may participate in the development of progressive CKD among patients with CHF.

Flexible piezoelectric thin films are raising interest in energy harvesting and wearable electronics, although their direct fabrication is challenging in the selection of substrates and thermal processing. In this work, we developed direct fabrication of flexible lead-free (K, Na)NbO3 (KNN)-based piezoelectric films on commercially available metallic foils by sol-gel processing. Stainless steel and platinum foils are selected as flexible substrates because of their good thermal stability, robust flexibility, and cost-efficiency. The sol-gel-processed KNN-based thin films on both of the metallic foils show good flexibility, with the bending radii reaching ±3 mm. The flexible thin films grown on stainless steel and platinum foils present high breakdown electric fields that reach 1760 and 2530 kV/cm, respectively, resulting from the fine-grained dense structure, limited leakage current density, and suppressed mobility of charged carriers. Improved effective piezoelectric coefficient d33, eff* (75.4 pm/V) with a slight decrease after bending was obtained in the flexible thin films on Pt when compared to their rigid counterparts. The flexible lead-free piezoelectric thin films with combined high breakdown electric fields and piezoelectric and energy storage properties may pave the way for integrating KNN-based multifunctional thin films into flexible electronics.

We report a feasible method to realize tunable surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) resonance in organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) by employing corrugated Ag-Al alloy electrodes. The excited SPP resonance induced by the periodic corrugations can be precisely tuned based on the composition ratios of the Ag-Al alloy electrodes. With an appropriate composition ratio of the corrugated alloy electrode, the photons trapped in SPP modes are recovered and extracted effectively. The 25% increasement in luminance and 21% enhancement in current efficiency have been achieved by using the corrugated Ag-Al alloy electrodes in OLEDs.

Ferroelectric perovskite oxides exhibit the bulk photovoltaic effect, which enables an above-bandgap photovoltage, controllable photocurrent response, and higher efficiencies. Herein, the phase structure, ferroelectric, dielectric, light absorption, and photovoltaic properties in (Ba0.95Ca0.05)(Ti0.92Sn0.08-xZrx)O3 (BCTSZx) ceramics were investigated. All BCTSZx samples had good ferroelectric properties along with a narrow band gap (Eg = 2.53–2.60 eV). A large photovoltaic response under AM 1.5 G simulated sunlight was observed in the poled BCTSZ0.06 ceramics, in which the maximum short-circuit current (JSC = 3.66 nA cm−2) as well as the highest transient current (JTC = 32.56 nA cm−2) and photocurrent (JPC = 12.63 nA cm−2) were obtained in 500 μm-thick sample negatively poled at 30 kV cm−1. Our results deepen an understanding of the ferroelectric photovoltaic mechanism of perovskite materials and provide a new material for photovoltaic and multifunctional applications.

Background Cisplatin has been a vital drug used for tumor treatment because of its excellent effect on numerous malignant solid cancers. Nonetheless, its nephrotoxicity is non-negligible in clinical practice. This study aims to provide a new understanding of the molecular mechanism of transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) in cisplatin-induced renal apoptosis. Methods We evaluated the effect on apoptosis, TRPA1 expression, and intracellular calcium concentration of human kidney 2 (HK-2) cells induced by diamminedichloroplatinum (DDP). Additionally, we also assessed DDP-induced apoptosis, the expression of Bax, caspase3, cleaved-cas3, p53, Bcl-2 and intracellular calcium concentration combined with HC-030031 and/or pifithrin-α. The effect of FK506 on apoptosis of HK-2 cells induced by DDP and the expression of the nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT) protein treated with HC-030031, pifithrin-α, and/or FK506 were also explored. Results The results showed that apoptosis, TRPA1 expression, and intracellular calcium concentration of HK-2 cell induced by DDP were enhanced in a dose-dependent manner. HC-030031 and pifithrin-α relieved apoptosis, and intracellular calcium concentration and the expression of NFAT and phospho-NFAT (p-NFAT) were induced by DDP. HC-030031 combined with pifithrin-α further aggravated the above-mentioned tendency, including relieved apoptosis, intracellular calcium concentration, and NFAT and p-NFAT expression. HC-030031 and FK506 decelerated the apoptosis, and NFAT and p-NFAT expression of HK-2 cells was induced by DDP, while simultaneous treatment with HC-030031 and FK506 further decreased apoptosis and protein expression. However, the expression of Bcl-2 increased when HC-030031, pifithrin-α, or FK506 was used alone, and HC-030031 combined with pifithrin-α or FK506 further improved the expression of Bcl-2. Conclusions TRPA1 mediates cisplatin-induced apoptosis in renal tubular cells via the calcineurin-nuclear factor of activated T-cells-p53 signaling pathway.

Due to the uncertainty energy resources, the distributed renewable energy supply usually leads to the highly unstable reliability of power system. For instance, power system reliability can be affected by the high penetration of large-scale wind turbine generators (WTG). Therefore, energy storage system (ESS) is usually installed with the distributed renewable energy generation to improve the power system reliability by smoothing out the fluctuations and improve the supply and demand balance. This paper aims to analyze the power system reliability by developing the multi-ESSs coordinated with WTGs model, which is each ESS linked with each WTG. The main indices for reliability evaluation are loss of load expectation, expected energy not served and energy index of reliability. Monte Carlo simulation method is used in this study. Furthermore, this paper demonstrates various sensitivity analysis of multi-ESSs model include the impact of various ESS capacity, peak load, WTG dispatch restriction index in China power system among case study. In addition, the capacity credit of WTG with multi-ESSs were evaluated in this study.

Background. Depression is a common mental disease that lacks effective therapeutic drugs with good curative effects and few adverse reactions. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has the advantages of multiple components, multiple channels, and fewer adverse reactions in the treatment of depression. Although Xingpi Jieyu Decoction (XPJYD) demonstrates a good therapeutic effect on depression, the pharmacological mechanism underlying its antidepressant effect is still unclear. Methods. We used a network pharmacology strategy, including the construction and analysis of a complex drug-disease network, to explore the complex mechanism of XPJYD treatment of depression. In addition, molecular docking technology was used to preliminarily study the binding ability of the potential active components and core therapeutic targets of XPJYD. Results. The network pharmacology results showed 42 targets of XPJYD that are involved in depression. PPI network analysis demonstrated that the top 10 core targets were AKT1, VEGFA, MAPK8, FOS, ESR1, NR3C1, IL6, HIF1A, NOS3, and AR. The molecular docking results showed that the binding energies of beta sitosterol with AR, FOS, AKT1, VEGFA, NR3C1, and NOS3 were less than −7.0 kcal·mol−1, indicating a good docking effect. The GO enrichment analysis results showed that the XPJYD antidepression mechanism mainly involves the following biological processes such as apoptotic signaling pathway, cellular response to lipid, inflammatory response, and others. The KEGG analysis results indicated that XPJYD may regulate 13 pathways such as PI3K-Akt signaling pathway and estrogen signaling pathway in the treatment of depression. Conclusions. This study reflects the characteristics of the mechanism of action by which XPJYD treats depression, which includes multiple components, multiple targets, and multiple pathways, and provides a biological basis for further verification and a novel perspective for drug discovery in depression.

This study aimed to explore the efficacy of trypsin inhibitors in the treatment of severe pancreatitis (SP) by meta-analysis.The Boolean logic retrieval method was adopted to recruit the relevant literature. Chinese and English databases were respectively searched using a combination of the following search terms: "trypsin inhibitor", "acute pancreatitis", and "severe pancreatitis". The trypsin-treated SP group was set as the experimental group, and the blank control was set as the control group. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 software provided by the Cochrane system.A total of 12 references were included. The meta-analysis suggested that the heterogeneity test results of pancreatic infection incidence were Chi2 =0.51, degrees of freedom (df) =7, I2=0%50%, and P=1.000.01, with risk ratio (RR): 0.80, 95% confidence interval (CI): (0.64, 1.01), Z=1.88, and P=0.06. The heterogeneity test results of extra-pancreatic infection incidence were Chi2 =0.20, df =5, I2=0%50%, and P=1.000.01, with RR: 0.81, 95% CI: (0.62, 1.05), Z=1.60, and P=0.11. The heterogeneity test results of the length of hospital stay were Tau2 =65.69, Chi2 =75.05, df =6, I2=92%50%, and P0.0001. The length of hospital stay of the experimental group was shorter than that of the control group, with mean difference (MD): -23.31 and the 95% CI: (-29.60, -17.02), and the difference was statistically significant (Z=7.26, P0.0001). The heterogeneity test results of the inflammatory factor tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) level were Chi2 =67.28, df =3, I2=96%50%, and P0.0001. The level of TNF-α in the experimental group was lower than that in the control group, with MD: -11.69, 95% CI: (-12.51, -10.87), and the difference was statistically significant (Z=27.88, P0.0001). The heterogeneity test results of the mortality rate were Chi2 =2.52, df =5, I2=0%50%, and P=0.770.01. The mortality rate of the experimental group was lower than that of the control group, with RR: 0.27 and 95% CI: (0.19, 0.40), and the difference was notable (Z=6.75, P0.0001).The meta-analysis performed in this study confirmed that trypsin inhibitors can inhibit the release of inflammatory factors and reduce mortality rate of SP patients.

Exceptional points (EPs) are the singularities of a non-Hermitian system where the eigenenergies and eigenstates simultaneously coalesce, a topological property that gives rise to a plethora of exotic phenomena. Probing the EPs and associated effects requires the system to go through the EPs. However, the ultrahigh sensitivity of an isolated EP to the external disturbances makes accessing the EPs difficult. To overcome this limit, many approaches have been presented to form the exceptional line/ring and surface. Here, we demonstrate that a quantum exceptional chamber, which is a three-dimensional collection of the EPs, can be constructed in the coupled plasmon-quantum dot (QD) systems by the nondipole effect of the QD. For an asymmetric QD adjacent to a plasmonic nanoparticle, it is found that the contributions of multipole transitions to the coupling strength can be larger than that of dipole transition. The orientation-dependent quantum interference between the dipole and multipole transitions can lead to controllable switch between the weak and strong coupling, and provides an extra degree of freedom to form a high-dimension EP space. Our approach provides a robust platform for accessing the quantum EPs and related applications.

BACKGROUND Isoniazid (INH), rifampicin (RMP), pyrazinamide (PZA), and ethambutol (EMB) are the four most common drugs for the first-line treatment of tuberculosis (TB). Although chemotherapy drugs are widely used in the treatment of TB, and achieved good results, but the side effects, especially anti-tuberculosis drug-induced liver injury (ATDILI), cannot be overlooked. Many researchers have made efforts to uncover the association of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme genetic polymorphisms with ATDILI. In this study, we systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed the relationship between CYP polymorphism and susceptibility to ATDILI. METHODS We carried out literature searches of PubMed, Ovid, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms including "cytochrome P450 enzyme", "drug-induced liver injury", "polymorphism", "tuberculosis", and "hepatotoxicity" were used as keywords for our searches. RESULTS The pooled odds ratio (OR) of all studies for CYP2E1 to the risk of ATDILI was 1.18 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.82-1.71]. The articles in this meta-analysis were observed to be mildly heterogeneous. Further subgroup analysis revealed that the patients who receiving a four-drug protocol (INH + RIF + PZA + EMB) or three-drug protocol (INH + RIF + PZA) regimens showed a higher risk of ATDILI than those who receiving INH alone. However, subgroup analyses according to participants' ethnic origin, study type, and the definition of ATDILI produced no statistically significant results. Associations between other genes in the CYP family and ATDILI were indistinct and equivocal. DISCUSSION Our meta-analysis has uncovered an association between CYP2E1 RsaI/PstI polymorphisms and ATDILI, especially among patients who receive a four-drug (INH + RIF + PZA + EMB) or three-drug (INH + RIF + PZA) anti-TB treatment regimen.

However, a secondary LOR is difficult to predict by endoscopy due to the intestinal stricture, perforation, and fistulas. This study aimed to develop and validate a radiomic nomogram for the prediction of secondary LOR to IFX in patients with Crohn’s disease (CD).Patients and Methods: A total of 186 biologic-naive patients diagnosed with CD between September 2016 and June 2019 were enrolled. Secondary LOR was determined during week 54. Computed tomography enterography (CTE) texture analysis (TA) features were extracted from lesions and analyzed using LIFEx software. Feature selection was performed by least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and ten-fold cross validation. A nomogram was constructed using multivariable logistic regression, and the internal validation was approached by ten-fold cross validation.Results: Predictors contained in the radiomics nomogram included three first-order and five second-order signatures. The prediction model presented significant discrimination (AUC, 0.880; 95% CI, 0.816– 0.944) and high calibration (mean absolute error of = 0.028). Decision curve analysis (DCA) indicated that the nomogram provided clinical net benefit. Ten-fold cross validation assessed the stability of the nomogram with an AUC of 0.817 and an accuracy of 0.819.Conclusion: This novel radiomics nomogram provides a predictive tool to assess secondary LOR to IFX in patients with Crohn’s disease. Background Intradialytic hypotension (IDH) remains the most frequent severe side effect of hemodialysis (HD) and increases patient morbidity and mortality. Excessive ultrafiltration (UF) is considered the leading cause of IDH. This study developed a suitable prescription of UF to reduce the incidences of IDH episodes. Methods A retrospective study was performed to analyze 33,224 HD/hemodiafiltration (HDF) treatments in 312 patients. The prescription of UF were determined following the International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) guideline. The Pearson's method was used to study the correlation between relative variables. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to predict the value of the UF/weight ratio (UF/Wt) for IDH in all patients to establish a diagnostic cut-off point. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were applied to study the risk factors of IDH. Results Twelve thousand five hundred and fifty-eight sessions of IDH (38.7%) were identified, among which 1,224 (3.6%) were recorded with intervention against IDH. Both the systolic blood pressure (SBP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) of the hemodialytic patients were positively correlated with the UF quantity and the UF/Wt, but negatively correlated with blood flow. The ROC curve showed that UF/Wt =0.04 was the cut-off point for IDH. Age [per 10-year increment, odds ratio (OR) =1.005, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.004 to 1.007, P=0.000], diabetes mellitus (OR =1.209, 95% CI: 1.122 to 1.303, P=0.000), and UF/Wt >0.04 (OR =1.605, 95% CI: 1.532 to 1.682, P=0.000) were all independently associated with higher incidences of IDH. Conclusions IDH commonly occurs during HD in Chinese patients. Unchangeable factors such as diabetes and age, and modifiable factors including UF were associated with IDH. A UF/Wt threshold more than 0.04 may be a potential alert for avoiding IDH, especially in the elderly and diabetic patients.

Objective A role of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in the diagnosis of cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is not wellunderstood. This study evaluates the effectiveness of DWI in the diagnosis of CVT. Methods Literature search was conducted in electronic databases for the identification of studies which reported the outcomes of patients subjected to DWI for CVT diagnosis. Random-effects meta-analyses were performed to achieve overall estimates of important diagnostic efficiency indices including hyperintense signal rate, the sensitivity and specificity of DWI in diagnosing CVT, and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of DWI signal areas and surrounding tissue. Results Nineteen studies (443 patients with 856 CVTs; age 40 years [95% confidence interval (CI), 33 to 43]; 28% males [95% CI, 18 to 38]; symptom onset to DWI time 4.6 days [95% CI, 2.3 to 6.9]) were included. Hyperintense signals on DWI were detected in 40% (95% CI, 26 to 55) of the cases. The sensitivity of DWI for detecting CVT was 22% (95% CI, 11 to 34) but specificity was 98% (95% CI, 95 to 100). ADC values were quite heterogenous in DWI signal areas. BACKGROUND/AIMS To explore risk factors of acute kidney injury (AKI) and its severity after liver transplantation. MATERIALS AND METHODS This was a retrospective cohort of consecutive adults undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) at a referral hospital. Risk factors for AKI from 1week post-liver transplantation and 4-week outcomes were analysed. Further analyses of factors that influenced the severity of AKI were also performed. RESULTS A total of 204 patients were included. AKI was found in 55.4% of patients in the first week after OLT. Risk factors for AKI were recipient's sex, BMI, preoperative creatinine, preoperative hepatic encephalopathy, cold ischaemia time, duration of surgery, duration of inferior vena clamping, postoperative peak lactate and postoperative peak AST, which were higher in the AKI group. Four weeks after liver transplantation, 20.4% of AKI patients still had abnormal renal function and a mortality rate of 3.6%, and these values were significantly higher than those of patients without AKI (P

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been widely recognized as a precursor to metabolic complications. Elevated inflammation levels are predictive of NAFLD-associated metabolic disorder. Inactive rhomboid-like protein 2 (iRhom2) is regarded as a key regulator in inflammation. However, the precise mechanisms by which iRhom2-regulated inflammation promotes NAFLD progression remain to be elucidated. APPROACH AND RESULTS Here, we report that insulin resistance, hepatic steatosis, and specific macrophage inflammatory activation are significantly alleviated in iRhom2-deficient (knockout [KO]) mice, but aggravated in iRhom2 overexpressing mice. We further show that, mechanistically, in response to a high-fat diet (HFD), iRhom2 KO mice and mice with iRhom2 deficiency in myeloid cells only showed less severe hepatic steatosis and insulin resistance than controls. Inversely, transplantation of bone marrow cells from healthy mice to iRhom2 KO mice expedited the severity of insulin resistance and hepatic dyslipidemia. Of note, in response to HFD, hepatic iRhom2 binds to mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase 7 (MAP3K7) to facilitate MAP3K7 phosphorylation and nuclear factor kappa B cascade activation, thereby promoting the activation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase/insulin receptor substrate 1 signaling, but disturbing AKT/glycogen synthase kinase 3β-associated insulin signaling. The iRhom2/MAP3K7 axis is essential for iRhom2-regulated liver steatosis. CONCLUSIONS iRhom2 may represent a therapeutic target for the treatment of HFD-induced hepatic steatosis and insulin resistance.

Identification of abnormal cervical cells is a significant problem in computer-aided diagnosis of cervical cancer. In this study, we develop an artificial intelligence (AI) system, named CytoBrain, to automatically screen abnormal cervical cells to help facilitate the subsequent clinical diagnosis of the subjects. The system consists of three main modules: 1) the cervical cell segmentation module which is responsible for efficiently extracting cell images in a whole slide image (WSI); 2) the cell classification module based on a compact visual geometry group (VGG) network called CompactVGG which is the key part of the system and is used for building the cell classiffier; 3) the visualized human-aided diagnosis module which can automatically diagnose a WSI based on the classification results of cells in it, and provide two visual display modes for users to review and modify. For model construction and validation, we have developed a dataset containing 198 952 cervical cell images (60 238 positive, 25 001 negative, and 113 713 junk) from samples of 2 312 adult women. Since CompactVGG is the key part of CytoBrain, we conduct comparison experiments to evaluate its time and classification performance on our developed dataset and two public datasets separately. The comparison results with VGG11, the most efficient one in the family of VGG networks, show that CompactVGG takes less time for either model training or sample testing. Compared with three sophisticated deep learning models, CompactVGG consistently achieves the best classification performance. The results illustrate that the system based on CompactVGG is efficient and effective and can support for large-scale cervical cancer screening.

There have been recent extensive studies and rapid advancement on the pathogenesis underlying idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and intricate pathogenesis of IPF has been suggested. The purpose of this study was to clarify the logical relationship between these mechanisms. An extensive search was undertaken of the PubMed using the following keywords: “etiology,” “pathogenesis,” “alveolar epithelial cell (AEC),” “fibroblast,” “lymphocyte,” “macrophage,” “epigenomics,” “histone,” acetylation,” “methylation,” “endoplasmic reticulum stress,” “mitochondrial dysfunction,” “telomerase,” “proteases,” “plasminogen,” “epithelial-mesenchymal transition,” “oxidative stress,” “inflammation,” “apoptosis,” and “idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.” This search covered relevant research articles published up to April 30, 2020. Original articles, reviews, and other articles were searched and reviewed for content; 240 highly relevant studies were obtained after screening. IPF is likely the result of complex interactions between environmental, genetic, and epigenetic factors: environmental exposures affect epigenetic marks; epigenetic processes translate environmental exposures into the regulation of chromatin; epigenetic processes shape gene expression profiles; in turn, an individual's genetic background determines epigenetic marks; finally, these genetic and epigenetic factors act in concert to dysregulate gene expression in IPF lung tissue. The pathogenesis of IPF involves various imbalances including endoplasmic reticulum, telomere length homeostasis, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidant/antioxidant imbalance, Th1/Th2 imbalance, M1–M2 polarization of macrophages, protease/antiprotease imbalance, and plasminogen activation/inhibition imbalance. These affect each other, promote each other, and ultimately promote AEC/fibroblast apoptosis imbalance directly or indirectly. Excessive AEC apoptosis and impaired apoptosis of fibroblasts contribute to fibrosis. IPF is likely the result of complex interactions between environmental, genetic, and epigenetic factors. The pathogenesis of IPF involves various imbalances centered on AEC/fibroblast apoptosis imbalance.

Background:. The low accuracy of equations predicting 24-h urinary sodium excretion using a single spot urine sample contributed to the misclassification of individual sodium intake levels. The application of single spot urine sample is limited by a lack of representativity of urinary sodium excretion, possibly due to the circadian rhythm in urinary excretion. This study aimed to explore the circadian rhythm, characteristics, and parameters in a healthy young adult Chinese population as a theoretical foundation for developing new approaches. Methods:. Eighty-five participants (mean age 32.4 years) completed the 24-h urine collection by successively collecting each of the single-voided specimens within 24 h. The concentrations of the urinary sodium, potassium, and creatinine for each voided specimen were measured. Cosinor analysis was applied to explore the circadian rhythm of the urinary sodium, potassium, and creatinine excretion. The excretion per hour was computed for analyzing the change over time with repeated-measures analysis of variance and a cubic spline model. Results:. The metabolism of urinary sodium, potassium, and creatinine showed different patterns of circadian rhythm, although the urinary sodium excretion showed non-significant parameters in the cosinor model. A significant circadian rhythm of urinary creatinine excretion was observed, while the circadian rhythm of sodium was less significant than that of potassium. The circadian rhythm of urinary sodium and creatinine excretion showed synchronization to some extent, which had a nocturnal peak and fell to the lowest around noon to afternoon. In contrast, the peak of potassium was observed in the morning and dropped to the lowest point in the evening. The hourly urinary excretion followed a similar circadian rhythm. Conclusion:. It is necessary to consider the circadian rhythm of urinary sodium, potassium, and creatinine excretion in adults while exploring the estimation model for 24-h urinary sodium excretion using spot urine.

Transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs) have attracted considerable attentions as one of the essential components in optoelectronic devices. High conductivity, transmittance and flexibility are required for the practical applications of the TCEs in wearable and portable electronics. Here, a simple fabrication process of capillary force-induced printing has been developed to realize highly aligned silver nanowires (AgNWs) film with high flexibility, stretchability and conformability. Ultrathin and skin-attachable OLEDs have been realized based on the aligned AgNWs electrode. This work has proposed a low-cost and fast fabrication strategy to realize highly aligned AgNWs electrode for the flexible and stretchable optoelectronic devices.

It is well known that surface passivation and modification are efficient approaches to improve the photoluminescence and stability of perovskites. Although CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs) could be embedded into a Cs4PbBr6 matrix to enhance the photoluminescence property, the limited stability will hinder their applications. It still remains a challenge to convert CsPbBr3 to Cs4PbBr6 in one step with surface modification by using oxide on a single-particle level. Herein, the process of conversion from CsPbBr3 to Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3 microcrystals (MCs) by a ligand-assisted supersaturated recrystallization (LASR) method has been studied. To improve its stability, CsPbBr3 has been successfully converted into monodisperse Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3@Ta2O5 core–shell MCs through a facile one-step sol–gel method at room temperature. Compared with Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3, Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3@Ta2O5 has better light stability and thermal stability. Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3@Ta2O5 MCs display great enhancement in photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) (up to 94.7%) and photoluminescence lifetime (up to 67.8 ns). Furthermore, the luminous efficiency of the WLED device based on Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3@Ta2O5 (31.9 lm W−1) is twice that of the WLED device fabricated by Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3 (15.2 lm W−1).

BACKGROUND Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is widely used in the treatment of hematological diseases. However, complications after transplantation, such as acute and chronic graft-vs-host disease (GVHD), still seriously affect the quality of life and even threaten the lives of patients. There is evidence that glomerular diseases can manifest as GVHD. However, GVHD should not occur as a result of syngeneic HSCT. CASE SUMMARY A 20-year-old male diagnosed with T lymphoblastic lymphoma (stage IIIA, aaIPI 1) in September 2013 was treated with six cycles of hyper-CVAD and achieved complete remission. He underwent syngeneic HSCT in June 2014, and had no kidney disease history before the transplant. However, nephrotic syndrome occurred 24 mo later in the patient after syngeneic HSCT. Renal biopsy was performed, which led to a diagnosis of atypical membranous nephropathy. After treatment with glucocorticoids combined with cyclophosphamide and cyclosporine, the nephrotic syndrome was completely relieved. CONCLUSION We report a case of delayed nephrotic syndrome after syngeneic HSCT. Antibody-mediated autoimmune glomerular disease may be the underlying mechanism. After treatment with immunosuppressive agents, the nephrotic syndrome was completely relieved but further long-term follow-up is still needed.

Metal halide perovskites are a new class of promising materials in optoelectronic applications. As the optoelectronic properties of lead halide perovskites are determined largely by their morphology, the morphology of perovskites is crucial for their applications. However, the morphology-controllable synthesis of Cs4PbBr6 perovskites has been scarcely reported so far. Here, zero-dimensional Cs4PbBr6 perovskite microcrystals with tunable size and ultra-uniform morphology were synthesized via a facile precipitation method. The as-prepared Cs4PbBr6 microcrystals possess high photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 98% and excellent stability. The content of ligands plays a dominant role in the solubility of PbBr2 and can compete with Cs+ ions for the surface passivation of Cs4PbBr6 microcrystals, thus modulating the kinetics of the reaction to influence the size and phase of the final products. Meanwhile, the synthesized Cs4PbBr6 microcrystals have outstanding thermal stability compared with CsPbBr3 perovskites. Highly emissive hexagonal Cs4PbBr6 microcrystals with excellent stability were used as phosphors for white light emitting diodes (WLEDs), and the luminous efficiency of the WLED device was determined to be as high as 116.84 lm W−1. This study provides an effective and facile approach to fabricate stable Cs4PbBr6 microcrystals with tunable size and excellent photoluminescence properties.

Mg2Sn is a potential thermoelectric (TE) material that exhibits environmental compatibility. In this study, we fabricated Sb-doped Mg2Sn (Mg2Sn1-xSbx) single-crystal ingots and demonstrated the enhancement of TE performance via point defect engineering and Sb doping. The Mg2Sn1-xSbx single-crystal ingots exhibited considerably enhanced electrical conductivity because of the donor-doping effect in addition to high carrier mobility. Moreover, the Mg2Sn1-xSbx single-crystal ingots contained Mg vacancy (VMg) as a point defect. The introduced VMg and doped Sb atoms formed nanostructures, both acting as phonon-scattering centers. Consequently, lower lattice thermal conductivity was achieved for the Mg2Sn1-xSbx single-crystal ingots compared with polycrystalline counterparts. Owing to the significant enhancement in the electrical conductivity and the reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity, the maximum power factor of 5.1(4) × 10-3 W/(K2 m) and the maximum dimensionless figure of merit of 0.72(5) were achieved for the Mg2Sn0.99Sb0.01 single-crystal ingot, which are higher than those of single-phase Mg2Sn1-xSb polycrystals.

This study investigates the presentation of service logo information under partially automated driving. Drivers completed simulated drives with partial automation during which they had to detect target logo signs and react to hazards by taking over vehicle control when needed. Driver performance was measured in terms of sign detection rate, crash rate, and hazard response time. A number of factors, including sign information source, sign information load, and driver age group, were investigated. In general, our findings support the delivery of service logo information via in-vehicle display under partially automated driving, especially when the in-vehicle display occurred simultaneously with the on-road signage. Under this presentation condition, drivers were most accurate in detecting target logo signs, and showed little impairment from processing sign information as a secondary task when negotiating a hazard. Implications of the findings and future directions were discussed.

Vehicle automation is becoming more advanced in helping drivers understand and react to the environment around them. Many newer vehicle models come standard with backup cameras, blind spot detection, and warning signals. It’s important to identify if such features significantly improve driver performance. The current study investigated the relationship between the presentation of a warning indicating a threat and whether or not that signal helped the participants detect the threat. Findings suggested that participants asked to detect when an automated braking system engaged were significantly more accurate at noticing the system engaged than those asked to manually take-over the vehicle when a threat emerged. In both groups, those given visual warnings that a threat was about to occur were faster in taking over the vehicle when needed than those who did not receive a warning. However, accuracy was low across all conditions groups.

CD146 was initially identified as a marker of melanoma in 1987. The research history of more than 30 years revealed its physiological functions in early development, immune response, metabolism, and pathological functions in inflammation, autoimmune diseases, tumor and pregnancy diseases. The understanding of the functional mechanisms of CD146 has also changed from mediating cell migration as an adhesion molecule to receiving extracellular signals and activating various intracellular signaling pathways as a cell membrane receptor. The correlation of CD146 to various diseases, especially its roles in tumors, inspired the application explorations of CD146 in diagnosis, prognosis and targeted therapy of those diseases, some of which has entered the clinical stage. In this review, to understand CD146 in an all-round way and develop its application potential in biomedicine, we comprehensively reviewed and summarized the research history of CD146 and addressed the prospect of the fundamental questions in its research and development.

This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical outcome of 172 children with newly diagnosed severe aplastic anemia (SAA) between January 2008 and April 2018, who received rabbit antithymocyte globulin (ATG) and cyclosporine (CsA) as first-line treatment. The median age at diagnosis was 5 years (range, 1–14). The overall response rates were 22.7%, 45.3%, and 61% at 40 days, 3 months, and 6 months, respectively, after rabbit ATG. In multivariate analysis, mild disease severity was the only predictor of favorable response at 6 months (P = 0.006). In the present study, median follow-up period was 63 months (range, 1–135). The 5-year overall survival (OS) and failure-free survival (FFS) rates were 90.5% and 70.4%. Multivariate analysis showed that erythroid burst-forming units (BFU-E) > 2/105 bone marrow mononuclear cell (BMMNC) (P = 0.037) and time interval before IST ≤ 30 days (P = 0.017) were independent positive predictors for OS, meanwhile BFU-E > 2/105BMMNC (P = 0.029) was the only favorable prognostic factor for FFS.

Introduction In clinical trials, recombinant factor IX fusion protein (rFIXFc) has demonstrated safety, efficacy and prolonged activity with extended dosing intervals for treatment of haemophilia B. Aim To assess the real-world clinical utility of rFIXFc in a variable patient population and routine clinical practice. Methods A multicentre, retrospective chart review was conducted of patients with haemophilia B who had received rFIXFc prophylaxis or on-demand treatment for ≥6 months across six sites in the United States. Results Sixty-four eligible patients were identified who had a median (range) duration on rFIXFc of 2.7 (0.5-5.0) years. Of 32 patients on rFIXFc prophylaxis who switched from prophylaxis with another factor treatment (ie pre-rFIXFc) and had a known pre-rFIXFc dosing interval, the initial dosing interval was lengthened for 26 (81%) patients and maintained for the remaining 6 (19%) patients. Most (n = 48 [91%]) patients who received rFIXFc prophylaxis from the beginning to the end of the chart review period (n = 53) maintained or lengthened the dosing interval from first through last dose of rFIXFc. For patients receiving rFIXFc prophylaxis, there was an approximate 50% reduction in weekly factor consumption compared with pre-rFIXFc prophylaxis. Overall annualized bleed rates, annualized spontaneous bleed rates and annualized joint bleed rates decreased after switching to rFIXFc prophylaxis (n = 24 with bleed data). Compliance to recommended treatment improved or remained stable in most patients with available data (30/31). Conclusion Recombinant factor IX fusion protein prophylaxis improved bleed control, reduced overall consumption, reduced frequency of infusion and improved compliance for patients with haemophilia B in a real-world setting.

Background Reports on the application of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) to the diagnosis of peripheral pulmonary lesions (PPLs) are scarce. There have been no studies investigating the optimal specimen type for mNGS. Methods We used mNGS to detect pathogens in matched transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB), bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and bronchial needle brushing (BB) specimens from 39 patients suspected of having infectious PPLs. We explored differences in microbial composition and diagnostic accuracy of mNGS for the 3 specimen types. Results mNGS was more sensitive than conventional culture for detection of bacteria and fungi in TBLB, BALF, and BB specimens, with no difference in the sensitivity of mNGS across the different specimen types. mNGS showed higher sensitivity for fungi or uncategorized pulmonary pathogens in TBLB+BALF+BB compared to TBLB but not BALF or BB specimens. There were no significant differences between the 3 specimen types in the relative abundance of pathogens, or between TBLB and BB specimens in the relative abundance of 6 common lower respiratory tract commensals. Conclusions mNGS has a higher sensitivity than the conventional culture method for detecting pathogens in TBLB, BALF, or BB specimens. mNGS of BB samples is a less invasive alternative to TBLB for the diagnosis of infectious PPLs.

Hormone receptor-positive breast cancer accounts for around 75% of breast cancers. The estrogen receptor pathway promotes tumor progression and endocrine resistance. Recently, the cross-talk between the ER signaling pathway and cell cycle regulation has been identified. It is necessary to determine the underlying molecular mechanisms involved in the ER signaling pathway and find new target genes for prognosis and drug resistance in ER+ breast cancer. In this study, lncRNA MAFG-AS1 was shown to be up-regulated and associated with poor prognosis in ER+ breast cancer. Functionally, down-regulation of MAFG-AS1 could inhibit cell proliferation and promote apoptosis. In addition, MAFG-AS1 which contained an estrogen-responsive element could promote CDK2 expression by sponging miR-339-5p. Subsequently, MAFG-AS1 and CDK2 were found to be up-regulated in tamoxifen-resistant MCF-7 cells. Cross-talk between the ER signaling pathway and cell cycle conducted by MAFG-AS1 and CDK2 could promote tamoxifen resistance. In conclusion, our study indicated that estrogen-responsive lncRNA MAFG-AS1 up-regulated CDK2 by sponging miR-339-5p, which promoted ER+ breast cancer proliferation. Cross-talk between the ER signaling pathway and cell cycle suggested that lncRNA MAFG-AS1 is a potential biomarker and therapeutic target in ER+ breast cancer. CDK2 inhibitors may be applied to endocrine resistance therapy.

As candidate thermal/environmental barrier coatings (T/EBCs), the structure characteristics and comprehensive properties of monoclinic-prime (m') RETaO4 (RE = Yb, Lu, Sc) with excellent Al2O3/SiO2 chemical compatibility are studied. Excellent thermal insulation protection will be provided by m'RETaO4 due to their low thermal conductivity (∼1.6 W m−1 K−1, 900 °C) and prominent thermal radiation resistance, which is much better than those of YSZ (∼2.5 W m−1 K−1, 1000 °C) and La2Zr2O7 (∼2.0 W m−1 K−1, 900 °C). The thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) are 3.0–8.0 × 10-6 K−1 (200−1200 °C), which is suitable for T/EBCs applications. Furthermore, absence of phase transition and extraordinary chemical compatibility with Al2O3/SiO2 up to 1500 °C indicate the potential application prospect. The documented governing mechanisms of m'RETaO4 properties will enable researchers to promote their application in the future investigation.

Purpose Knee hyperextension in stance is a difficult condition to treat in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy (CP). In children with passive knee hyperextension, the presence of contracture or spasticity of the calf leads to knee hyperextension in stance phase. We hypothesize surgical treatment of the contracture of the calf will lead to less knee hyperextension. Methods We performed a retrospective review of children who were evaluated in our movement laboratory over 23 years with a diagnosis of CP Gross Motor Function Classification System I, II or III. We selected children who had passive knee hyperextension on exam and who underwent calf lengthening surgery. Children were divided into two groups: early recurvatum (ER) (n = 20) and late recurvatum (LR) (n = 14). Results There was no difference in the preoperative passive knee extension among the groups or the surgeries performed. For children who had passive knee hyperextension, calf lengthening improved static dorsiflexion with knee flexion on clinical exam by 9.3° in the ER group, 9.6° in the LR group as well as dorsiflexion with knee extension on clinical exam by 9.5° in the ER group and 6.4° in the LR group. The kinematic data showed that the ER group improved their knee hyperextension by 11° (p < 0.001), whereas the LR group did not significantly change their stance phase knee position. Conclusion Children with passive knee hyperextension who have a calf contracture and walk in knee hyperextension in the first half of stance phase may improve after calf lengthening. The current global burden of tuberculosis (TB) is one of the greatest challenges to public health, particularly in developing countries, and thus effective diagnostic methods and treatment options for TB remain a central topic in basic and clinical research. Heparin-binding hemagglutinin (HBHA)-specific immune responses have been linked to protection against TB. The binding of HBHA-coated beads to epithelial and endothelial cell layers may trigger transcytosis of the beads, which is the basis for extrapulmonary dissemination. In addition, HBHA has been confirmed as a potential diagnostic marker for TB, and it is important in developing new TB vaccines and anti-TB drugs. Recently, basic research on HBHA has been intensified. The HBHA application in the field of prevention and treatment should be further explored. In addition, the existing research achievements have shown its broad application prospects. Currently, there are no relevant specialized products, and research should be accelerated. These products may contribute to the application of HBHA in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of TB.

Background Passive-active immunoprophylaxis against mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of hepatitis B virus (HBV) recommends administering hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) and birth-dose hepatitis B vaccine in infants within 12 or 24 hours after birth. With this protocol, MTCT of HBV still occurs in 5–10% infants of HBV-infected mothers with positive hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg). The present study aimed to investigate whether earlier administration of HBIG and hepatitis B vaccine after birth can further increase protection efficacy. Methods We conducted a prospective, multi-center observational study in infants born to mothers with HBV infection, in whom neonatal HBIG and birth dose hepatitis B vaccine were administered within one hour after birth. The infants were followed up for HBV markers at 7–14 months of age. Results A total of 1140 pregnant women with HBV were enrolled, and 982 infants (9 twins) of 973 mothers were followed up at 9.6 ± 1.9 months of age. HBIG and birth-dose vaccine were administered in newborn infants within a median of 0.17 (0.02–1.0) hours after birth. The overall rate of MTCT was 0.9% (9/982), with none (0%) of the 607 infants of HBeAg-negative mothers and 9 (2.4%) of 375 infants of HBeAg-positive mothers acquiring HBV. All 9 HBV-infected infants were born to mothers with HBV DNA >2.75 × 106 IU/mL. Maternal HBV DNA levels >2 × 106 IU/mL were an independent risk factor (odds ratio, 10.627; 95% confidence interval, 2.135–∞) for immunoprophylaxis failure. Conclusions Earlier use (within 1 hour after birth) of HBIG and hepatitis B vaccine can provide better protection efficacy against MTCT of HBV.

Three-phase meander-type dynamic wireless power transfer is ideal for the power supply or charging of rail vehicles. However, there is a lack of systematic analysis and design of the three-phase receiver. To achieve the compact design of the three-phase receiver in practical applications, this article studies the compact three-phase receiver with overlapped receiving coils and ferrite core. Based on the analysis of the fundamental coupling characteristic of three-phase meander-type dynamic wireless power transfer, two overlap modes of the receiving coils are concluded and compared. Meanwhile, by considering the influence of mutual inductance harmonic distortion, the accuracy of the receiving coil analysis and design is improved. Furthermore, a practical distributed strip core design is presented to enhance the coupling between transmitting coils and receiving coils. Additionally, the effect of the core on coupling imbalance is analyzed in detail and proves to have little effect on the power transfer. Afterward, a design flow of star-connected series-compensated receiver with the overlapped coils and the distributed strip core is proposed. Finally, for verification, a small prototype with an average output power of 154 W and average efficiency of 97% of the receiving coils is established.

Objectives To develop a new Chinese medicine (CM)-based drug and to evaluate its safety and effect for suppressing acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in COVID-19 patients. Methods A putative ARDS-suppressing drug Keguan-1 was first developed and then evaluated by a randomized, controlled two-arm trial. The two arms of the trial consist of a control therapy (alpha interferon inhalation, 50 µg twice daily; and lopinavir/ritonavir, 400 and 100 mg twice daily, respectively) and a testing therapy (control therapy plus Keguan-1 19.4 g twice daily) by random number table at 1:1 ratio with 24 cases each group. After 2-week treatment, adverse events, time to fever resolution, ARDS development, and lung injury on newly diagnosed COVID-19 patients were assessed. Results An analysis of the data from the first 30 participants showed that the control arm and the testing arm did not exhibit any significant differences in terms of adverse events. Based on this result, the study was expanded to include a total of 48 participants (24 cases each arm). The results show that compared with the control arm, the testing arm exhibited a significant improvement in time to fever resolution (P=0.035), and a significant reduction in the development of ARDS (P=0.048). Conclusions Keguan-1-based integrative therapy was safe and superior to the standard therapy in suppressing the development of ARDS in COVID-19 patients.
