[Otros] Dans cette revue, nous présentons des résultats sur l'absorption acoustique parfaite sub-longueur d'onde faisant appel à des métamatériaux acoustiques avec des résonateurs Helmholtz pour différentes configurations. L'absorption parfaite à basse fréquence nécessite une augmentation du nombre d'états aux basses fréquences ainsi que de trouver les bonnes conditions pour une adaptation d'impédance avec le milieu environnant. Si en outre, on souhaite réduire les dimensions géométriques des structures proposées pour des questions pratiques, on peut utiliser des résonateurs locaux judicieusement conçus afin d'attendre une absorption parfaite sub-longueur d'onde. Les résonateurs de Helmholtz se sont révélés de bons candidats en raison de leur accordabilité aisée de la géométrie, donc de la fréquence de résonance, de la fuite d'énergie et des pertes intrinsèques. Lorsqu'ils sont branchés à un guide d'ondes ou à un milieu environnant, ils se comportent comme des systèmes ouverts, avec pertes et résonances caractérisés par leur fuite d'énergie et leurs pertes intrinsèques. L'équilibre entre ces deux aspects représente la condition de couplage critique et donne lieu à un maximum d'absorption d'énergie. Le mécanisme de couplage critique est ici représenté dans le plan de fréquence complexe afin d'interpréter la condition d'adaptation d'impédance. Dans cette revue, nous discutons en détail la possibilité d'obtenir une absorption parfaite par ces conditions de couplage critiques dans différents systèmes tels que la réflexion (à un port), la transmission (à deux ports) ou les systèmes à trois ports., [EN] In this review, we present the results on sub-wavelength perfect acoustic absorption using acoustic metamaterials made of Helmholtz resonators with different setups. Low frequency perfect absorption requires to increase the number of states at low frequencies and finding the good conditions for impedance matching with the background medium. If, in addition, one wishes to reduce the geometric dimensions of the proposed structures for practical issues, one can use properly designed local resonators and achieve subwavelength perfect absorption. Helmholtz resonators have been shown good candidates due to their easy tunability of the geometry, so of the resonance frequency, the energy leakage and the intrinsic losses. When plugged to a waveguide or a surrounding medium they behave as open, lossy and resonant systems characterized by their energy leakage and intrinsic losses. The balance between these two represents the critical coupling condition and gives rise to maximum energy absorption. The critical coupling mechanism is represented here in the complex frequency plane in order to interpret the impedance matching condition. [EN] In this study, we report the characteristics of acoustic jets obtained through a mesoscale (radius less than 5 wavelengths) ABS cylinder made with a 3D printer. We have analyzed the influence of cylinder size on the characteristic parameters of an acoustic jet, such as maximum acoustic intensity at focus, Full Width at Half Maximum and length of Acoustic Jet. FWHM below 0.5 wavelength in AJ was experimentally obtained. It has been observed that there are two operating regimes depending on the cylinder radius: the resonant and the non-resonant. In the resonant regime, the excitation of Whispering Gallery Modes results in optimal parameter values of the acoustic jet. However, as it is a resonant regime, any minimal variation in cylinder size, working frequency or refractive index would make resonance disappear. In non-resonant mode, a phononic crystal has been embedded inside the cylinder and the characteristic parameters of the acoustic jet have been studied. These have been observed to improve. The aim of this study is to evaluate children in middle childhood with clubfoot treated with Ponseti method vs posterior-only release and to compare their results to a control group with 4 modules (physical examination, gait study, radiographic measurements, and questionnaires). From 01/01/2004 until 01/01/2009, 31 children (45 feet) were treated with the posterior-only release protocol and 22 patients (34 feet) were treated with the Ponseti method. In 2016, patients were evaluated and compared with 25 children without neuromuscular disorders. Parents completed 3 outcome questionnaires. Radiographs evaluated residual deformity and osteoarthritis. A physical examination and a 3-dimensional gait analysis were performed to evaluate range of motion, kinematic, and kinetic data. Recurrence rate was similar between treatment groups; however, type of surgery to treat residual deformity was more aggressive in the posterior-only release (91% required major surgery), p?=?.024. Radiographic examination showed similar residual deformity with greater hindfoot varus in posterior-only release (68%), p?=?.02. Reduced cadence, increased stance dorsiflexion, calcaneus gait and forced eversion prior to swing were the main characteristics of gait in posterior-only release. Four (11%) feet treated with posterior-only release vs 11 (33%) feet treated with Ponseti method had a normal gait, p?=?.016. Our study showed that biomechanical function and long-term outcomes of children in middle childhood treated with the Ponseti method more closely compare with healthy individuals than those treated using posterior-only surgical technique. [EN] Crop classification based on satellite and aerial imagery is a recurrent application in remote sensing. It has been used as input for creating and updating agricultural inventories, yield prediction and land management. In the context of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), farmers get subsidies based on the crop area cultivated. The correspondence between the declared and the actual crop needs to be monitored every year, and the parcels must be properly maintained, without signs of abandonment. In this work, Sentinel2 time series images and 4-band Very High Resolution (VHR) aerial orthoimages from the Spanish National Programme of Aerial Orthophotography (PNOA) were combined in a pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) (VGG-19) adapted with a double goal: (i) the classification of agricultural parcels in different crop types; and (ii) the identification of crop condition (i.e., abandoned vs. non-abandoned) of permanent crops in a Mediterranean area of Spain. A total of 1237 crop parcels from the CAP declarations of 2019 were used as ground truth to classify into cereals, fruit trees, olive trees, vineyards, grasslands and arable land, from which 80% were used for training and 20% for testing. The overall accuracy obtained was greater than 93% both, at parcel and area levels. Olive trees were the least accurate crop, mostly misclassified with fruit trees, and young vineyards were slightly confused with cereal and arable land. In the assessment of crop condition, only 9.65% of the abandoned plots were missed (omission errors), and 7.21% of plots were over-detected (commission errors), having a 99% of overall accuracy from a total of 1931 image subset samples. The proposed methodology based on CNN is promising for its operational application in crop monitoring and in the detection of abandonments in the context of CAP subsidies, but a more exhaustive number of training samples is needed for extension to other crop types and geographical areas., This research has been funded by the Conselleria d'Agricultura, Medi Ambient, Canvi Climàtic i Desenvolupament Rural, Generalitat Valenciana, throught the nominative line S847000. The detection of methane emissions from fossil fuel production activities, such as oil and gas extraction and coal mining, has been identified as a key means for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. Several types of optical satellite sensors have recently been shown to be instrumental for this task. Spaceborne imaging spectrometers belong to this group. These instruments measure the solar radiation reflected by the Earth in hundreds of spectral channels in the 400-2500 nm spectral range with a typical spectral resolution of 10 nm and a spatial resolution of 30 m. The Italian PRISMA mission is the first system of this type providing data openly to the international scientific community. In this work, we evaluate the potential of PRISMA for methane mapping. Our retrieval of methane concentration enhancements is based on a matched-filter based algorithm applied to the 2300 nm spectral region containing methane absorption bands. We perform a simulation-based sensitivity analysis to assess the retrieval performance for different sites. The impact on the retrieval of uncertainties in PRISMA's spectral response and of different illumination conditions has also been evaluated. We find that brightness and homogeneity of the surface are major drivers for the detection and quantification of methane plumes with PRISMA, with precision errors ranging from 61 to 197 ppb in the evaluated images. The potential of PRISMA for methane mapping is further illustrated by real plume detections at different methane hotspot regions, including oil and gas extraction fields in Algeria, Turkmenistan, and the Permian Basin (USA) as well as the coal mines in the Shanxi region in China. Our study reports several important findings regarding the potential and limitations of PRISMA for methane mapping, most of which can be extrapolated to upcoming satellite imaging spectroscopy missions.

[EN] Column strengthening is a very common practice for improving the seismic performance of reinforced concrete frame structures or repairing damage after a seismic event. Several methods are employed for column strengthening, which can improve column strength by preventing its shear, bending or compression failure. However, not all methods allow column strengthening connections between adjacent floors, thus the beam-column joint strength could be limited by the column-joint interface capacity. This work aimed to analyse two joint strengthening designs, for which an experimental campaign of eight full-scale beam-column joints strengthened with steel caging, and subjected to cyclic and gravity loads, was carried out. As access to joint panels is very complex in existing structures, joint strengthening consists of external solutions: vertical or diagonal bars and capitals connecting columns. The results showed that these techniques significantly increased beam-column joint strength and highlighted that failure can be undesirably transferred to the joint. Vertical bars prevented the bending failure of the column-joint interface, but failure occurred at the joint in this study. [EN] In this work, we show that scattered acoustic vortices generated by metasurfaces with chiral symmetry present broadband unusual properties in the far-field. These metasurfaces are designed to encode the holographic field of an acoustical vortex, resulting in structures with spiral geometry. In the near field, phase dislocations with tuned topological charge emerge when the scattered waves interference destructively along the axis of the spiral metasurface. In the far field, metasurfaces based on holographic vortices inhibit specular reflections because all scattered waves also interfere destructively in the normal direction. In addition, the scattering function in the far field is unusually uniform because the reflected waves diverge spherically from the holographic focal point. In this way, by triggering vorticity, energy can be evenly reflected in all directions except to the normal. As a consequence, the designed metasurface presents a mean correlation-scattering coefficient of 0.99 (0.98 in experiments) and a mean normalized diffusion coefficient of 0.73 (0.76 in experiments) over a 4 octave frequency band. The singular features of the resulting metasurfaces with chiral geometry allow the simultaneous generation of broadband, diffuse and non-specular scattering. The M4F project brings together the fusion and fission materials communities working on the prediction of radiation damage production and evolution and their effects on the mechanical behaviour of irradiated ferritic/martensitic (F/M) steels. It is a multidisciplinary project in which several different experimental and computational materials science tools are integrated to understand and model the complex phenomena associated with the formation and evolution of irradiation induced defects and their effects on the macroscopic behaviour of the target materials. In particular the project focuses on two specific aspects: (1) To develop physical understanding and predictive models of the origin and consequences of localised deformation under irradiation in F/M steels; (2) To develop good practices and possibly advance towards the definition of protocols for the use of ion irradiation as a tool to evaluate radiation effects on materials. Nineteen modelling codes across different scales are being used and developed and an experimental validation programme based on the examination of materials irradiated with neutrons and ions is being carried out. The project enters now its 4th year and is close to delivering high-quality results. A naphtho[2,1-b:6,5-b′]difuran derivative was found to serve as an effective violet-emitting laser dye. It showed amplified spontaneous emission at 413 nm with the threshold of 1.1–2.9 mJ cm−2 using 0.1–0.5 wt% in polystyrene film. Lasing was also demonstrated using all-polymeric distributed-feedback lasers emitting at 411–417 nm with the threshold of 2.0–2.9 mJ cm−2. [EN] The monitoring and control of thermo-hygrometric indoor conditions is necessary for an adequate preservation of cultural heritage. The European standard EN 15757:2010 specifies a procedure for determining if seasonal patterns of relative humidity (RH) and temperature are adequate for the long-term preservation of hygroscopic materials on display at museums, archives, libraries or heritage buildings. This procedure is based on the characterization of the seasonal patterns and the calculation of certain control limits, so that it is possible to assess whether certain changes in the microclimate can be harmful for the preventive conservation of artworks, which would lead to the implementation of corrective actions. In order to discuss the application of this standard, 27 autonomous data-loggers were located in different points at the Archaeological Museum of l¿Almoina (Valencia). The HVAC system (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) at the museum tries to reach certain homogeneous environment, which becomes a challenge because parts of the ruins are covered by a skylight that produces a greenhouse effect in summer, resulting in severe thermo-hygrometric gradients. Based on the analysis of temperatures recorded during 16 months, the air conditions in this museum are discussed according to the standard EN 15757:2010, and some corrective measures are proposed to improve the conservation conditions. Although this standard is basically intended for data recorded from a single sensor, an alternative approach proposed in this work is to find zones inside the museum with a homogeneous microclimate and to discuss next the average values collected in each area. A methodology is presented to optimize the application of this standard in places with a complex microclimate like this case, when multiple sensors are located at different positions., This research was funded by the European Unions Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No. 814624.

The molecule N,N′-bis(3-methylphenyl)-N,N′-dyphenylbenzidine (TPD) has been widely used in optoelectronic applications, mainly for its hole-transporting properties, but also for its capability to emit blue light and amplified spontaneous emission, which is important for the development of organic lasers. Here, we report deep-blue-emitting distributed feedback (DFB) lasers based on TPD dispersed in polystyrene (PS), as active media, and dichromated gelatin layers with holographically engraved relief gratings, as laser resonators. The effect of the device architecture (with the resonator located below or on top of the active layer) is investigated with a dye (TPD) that can be doped into PS at higher rates (up to 60 wt%), than with previously used dyes (&lt, 5 wt%). This has enabled changing the index contrast between film and resonator, which has an important effect on the laser performance. With regards to thresholds, both architectures behave similarly for TPD concentrations above 20 wt%, while for lower concentrations, top-layer resonator devices show lower values (around half). Remarkably, the operational durability of top-layer resonator devices is larger (in a factor of around 2), independently of the TPD concentration. This is a consequence of the protection offered by the resonator against dye photo-oxidation when the device is illuminated with pulsed UV light.

[EN] Despite the complete treatment with surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, patients with glioblastoma have a devasting prognosis. Although the role of extending temozolomide treatment has been explored, the results are inconclusive. Recent evidence suggested that tumor vascularity may be a modulating factor in combination with methylation of O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promotor gene on the effect of temozolomide-based therapies, opening new possibilities for personalized treatments. Before proposing a prospective interventional clinical study, it is necessary to confirm the beneficial effect of the combined effect of MGMT methylation and moderate tumor vascularity, as well as the lack of benefit of temozolomide in patients with a highly vascular tumor.In this study, we evaluated the benefit on survival of the combination of methylation of O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promotor gene and moderate vascularity in glioblastoma using a retrospective dataset of 123 patients from a multicenter cohort. MRI processing and calculation of relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV), used to define moderate- and high-vascular groups, were performed with the automatic ONCOhabitats method. We assessed the previously proposed rCBV threshold (10.7) and the new calculated ones (9.1 and 9.8) to analyze the association with survival for different populations according to vascularity and MGMT methylation status. We found that patients included in the moderate-vascular group had longer survival when MGMT is methylated (significant median survival difference of 174 days, p = 0.0129*). However, we did not find significant differences depending on the MGMT methylation status for the high-vascular group (p = 0.9119). In addition, we investigated the combined correlation of MGMT methylation status and rCBV with the prognostic effect of the number of temozolomide cycles, and only significant results were found for the moderate-vascular group. In conclusion, there is a lack of benefit of extending temozolomide treatment for patients with high vascular glioblastomas, even presenting MGMT methylation. [EN] In this work we numerically and experimentally study the performance of large-volume hyperthermia induced by acoustic holographic-modulated high-intensity focused ultrasound (AHmHIFU) in gelatin phantoms. Excellent agreement was found between thermal simulations of the AHmHIFU system and temperature maps characterized with Proton Resonance Frequency Shift MR-thermometry at 1.5 T. ROIs inside which experimental temperature elevation was greater than 4 degrees were 11 mm by 16 mm and 7 mm by 30 mm with and without the holographic lens, respectively. Most importantly, standard deviation inside these ROIs were equal to 12% and 40% of the maximum temperature with and without the lens. In order to boost the use of shallow geothermal energy, reliable and sound information concerning its potential must be provided to the public and energy decision-makers, among others. To this end, we developed a GIS-based methodology that allowed us to estimate the resource, energy, economic and environmental potential of shallow geothermal energy at a regional scale. Our method focuses on closed-loop borehole heat exchanger systems, which are by far the systems that are most utilized for heating and cooling purposes, and whose energy demands are similar throughout the year in the study area applied. The resource was assessed based on the thermal properties from the surface to a depth of 100 m, considering the water saturation grade of the materials. Additionally, climate and building characteristics data were also used as the main input. The G.POT method was used for assessing the annual shallow geothermal resource and for the specific heat extraction (sHe) rate estimation for both heating and, for the first time, for cooling. The method was applied to the Region of Murcia (Spain) and thematic maps were created with the outputting results. They offer insight toward the thermal energy that can be extracted for both heating and cooling in (MWh/year) and (W/m); the technical potential, making a distinction over the climate zones in the region; the cost of the possible ground source heat pump (GSHP) installation, associated payback period and the cost of producing the shallow geothermal energy; and, finally, the GHG emissions savings derived from its usage. The model also output the specific heat extraction rates, which are compared to those from the VDI 4640, which prove to be slightly higher than the previous one.

[EN] In this work, we analyze the effect of the distribution of transparent Fresnel regions over the focusing profile of Soret Zone Plates (SZP) based on binary sequences. It is shown that this effect becomes very significant in those fields where directional transducers are employed, such as microwaves or acoustics. A thorough analysis of both the SZP transmission efficiency and the focusing enhancement factor is presented. [EN] This paper demonstrates that it is possible to characterize the water temperature profile and its temporal trend in a hot water storage tank during the thermal charge process, using a minimum number of thermocouples (TC), with minor differences compared to experimental data. Four experimental tests (two types of inlet and two water flow rates) were conducted in a 950 L capacity tank. For each experimental test (with 12 TC), four models were developed using a decreasing number of TC (7, 4, 3 and 2, respectively). The results of the estimation of water temperature obtained with each of the four models were compared with those of a fifth model performed with 12 TC. All models were tested for constant inlet temperature. Very acceptable results were achieved (RMSE between 0.2065 degrees C and 0.8706 degrees C in models with 3 TC). The models were also useful to estimate the water temperature profile and the evolution of thermocline thickness even with only 3 TC (RMSE between 0.00247 degrees C and 0.00292 degrees C). A comparison with a CFD model was carried out to complete the study with very small differences between both approaches when applied to the estimation of the instantaneous temperature profile. The proposed methodology has proven to be very effective in estimating several of the temperature-based indices commonly employed to evaluate thermal stratification in water storage tanks, with only two or three experimental temperature data measurements. [EN] In this work, we analyze the effect of predistortion techniques on the focusing profile of Fresnel Zone Plates (FZPs) in ultrasound applications. This novel predistortion method is based on either increasing or decreasing the width of some of the FZP Fresnel rings by a certain amount. We investigate how the magnitude of the predistortion, as well as the number and location of the predistorted rings, influences the lens focusing profile. This focusing profile can be affected in different ways depending on the area of the lens where the predistortion is applied. It is shown that when the inner area of the lens, closer to its center, is predistorted, this technique allows the control of the focal depth at the main focus. However, when the predistortion is applied to an area farther from the center of the lens, the acoustic intensity distribution among the main focus and the closest adjacent secondary foci can be tailored at a certain degree. Parallel-aligned liquid crystal on silicon devices (PA-LCoS) can be found nowadays in most of the advanced areas in optics and photonics. Many works have been dedicated to their characterization for optimum utilization in applications. However, usual techniques are based on diffractive or interferometric measurements. Recently, we proposed the use of Stokes polarimetry for a versatile yet easy to implement characterization. We show that the LCoS can modelled as a nonabsorbent reciprocal device which, combined with time-average Stokes polarimetry, enables to demonstrate robust measurements across the whole applied voltage range for the retardance and its flicker. One of the main novelties is that we also obtain the director orientation, which we show that changes across the voltage range, especially at larger applied voltages. This might affect in very sensitive applications. It might also provide a deeper insight into the internal dynamics in the LC layer. Photopolymers have become an important recording material for many applications, mainly related to holography. Their flexibility to change the chemical composition together with the optical properties made them a versatile holographic recording material. The introduction of liquid crystal molecules in a photopolymer based on multifunctional monomer provides us the possibility to generate tunable holograms. The switchable holographic elements are a key point for see-through applications. In this work, we optimize the holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystals composition to improve the performance of tunable waveguide couplers based on transmission gratings and specifically their response under an applied electric field. A variation around 60% in the transmission efficiency was achieved. [EN] Purpose: To systematically review evidence regarding the association of multi-parametric biomarkers with clinical outcomes and their capacity to explain relevant subcompartments of gliomas. Materials and Methods: Scopus database was searched for original journal papers from January 1st, 2007 to February 20th , 2017 according to PRISMA. Four hundred forty-nine abstracts of papers were reviewed and scored independently by two out of six authors. Based on those papers we analyzed associations between biomarkers, subcompartments within the tumor lesion, and clinical outcomes. From all the articles analyzed, the twenty-seven papers with the highest scores were highlighted to represent the evidence about MR imaging biomarkers associated with clinical outcomes. Similarly, eighteen studies defining subcompartments within the tumor region were also highlighted to represent the evidence of MR imaging biomarkers. Their reports were critically appraised according to the QUADAS-2 criteria. Results: It has been demonstrated that multi-parametric biomarkers are prepared for surrogating diagnosis, grading, segmentation, overall survival, progression-free survival, recurrence, molecular profiling and response to treatment in gliomas. Quantifications and radiomics features obtained from morphological exams (T1, T2, FLAIR, T1c), PWI (including DSC and DCE), diffusion (DWI, DTI) and chemical shift imaging (CSI) are the preferred MR biomarkers associated to clinical outcomes. Subcompartments relative to the peritumoral region, invasion, infiltration, proliferation, mass effect and pseudo flush, relapse compartments, gross tumor volumes, and high-risk regions have been defined to characterize the heterogeneity. For the majority of pairwise cooccurrences, we found no evidence to assert that observed co-occurrences were significantly different from their expected co-occurrences (Binomial test with False Discovery Rate correction, alpha=0.05). The co-occurrence among terms in the studied papers was found to be driven by their individual prevalence and trends in the literature. Conclusion: Combinations of MR imaging biomarkers from morphological, PWI, DWI and CSI exams have demonstrated their capability to predict clinical outcomes in different management moments of gliomas. Whereas morphologic-derived compartments have been mostly studied during the last ten years, new multi-parametric MRI approaches have also been proposed to discover specific subcompartments of the tumors. [EN] We report the fabrication of ZnO/Cu2O heterojunction solar cells by means of the electrodeposition technique. The effect of electrolyte medium for the ZnO deposition, annealing treatment and interface modification with graphene oxide (GO) layer on the photoelectrical properties was analyzed. The electrochemical results indicated a markedly dependent Cu2O film electrodeposition on the GO-modified ZnO films. The modification of ZnO/Cu2O interface with GO nanosheets and annealing treatment results in improved interface properties, varying morphology and defects in ZnO lattice that further lead to enhanced performance of the proposed heterojunction solar cells. While the obtained results indicate that the properties of GO coating need to be tailored for improved performance, a synergetic effect of the GO addition and annealing treatment on the photoelectric properties of the electrodeposited heterojunction is achieved. [EN] In this work, we present a configurable spherical lens for underwater focusing applications, which consists on a hollow ABS container filled with a liquid mixture. Two miscible liquids with different sound speeds are required to implement this novel configurable lens. We show that by adjusting the mixing ratio between the volumes of both liquids, the sound speed of the liquid mixture can be accurately selected. This results in a modification of the acoustic jet properties and a continuous tuning on the lens focal length. This procedure can be fully automatized providing a dynamic control mechanism that can shift the lens focal length to any desired value inside a continuous range in both directions. Depending on the acoustic properties of the selected liquids, subwavelength resolution or even beyond the diffraction limit resolution can be achieved. [EN] Copper barium tin sulfide (CBTS) is a direct band gap earth abundant, non-toxic and quaternary semiconductor compound. It is used as absorber because of its direct band gap of 1.9 eV. A numerical guide is proposed for CBTS-based photovoltaic cell to enhance the efficiency of experimentally designed device with introducing Cu2O as back surface field (BSF) layer by means of numerical modeling. Device optimization was performed in SCAPS-1D software under 1.5 AM illumination spectrum. After introducing BSF layer and optimized physical parameters, promising result was achieved with PCE of 9.72%, V-oc of 0.81 V, J(sc) of 15.73 mA/cm(2) and FF of 78.23%. [EN] The correction of transcranial focused ultrasound aberrations is a relevant issue for enhancing various non-invasive medical treatments. The emission through multi-element phased arrays has been the most widely accepted method to improve focusing in recent years; however, the number and size of transducers represent a bottleneck that limits the focusing accuracy of the technique. To overcome this limitation, a new disruptive technology, based on 3-D-printed acoustic lenses, has recently been proposed. As the submillimeter precision of the latest generation of 3-D printers has been proven to overcome the spatial limitations of phased arrays, a new challenge is to improve the accuracy of the numerical simulations required to design this type of ultrasound lens. In the study described here, we evaluated two improvements in the numerical model applied in previous works for the design of 3-D-printed lenses: (i) allowing the propagation of shear waves in the skull by means of its simulation as an isotropic solid and (ii) introduction of absorption into the set of equations that describes the dynamics of the wave in both fluid and solid media. [EN] In this work we evaluated the imaging properties of the Diffractive Corneal Inlay (DCI), a novel type of corneal implant working by diffraction that we proposed for the treatment of presbyopia. ZEMAX OpticStudio software was employed for the numerical assessment, with simulations performed in a human-based eye model. In the ray tracing analysis, we used the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), the Area under the MTF (AMTF), and the Point Spread Function (PSF). The theoretical performance of the DCI under different situations was evaluated in comparison with a commercially available pinhole based corneal inlay. Finally, real images were obtained experimentally in vitro in a model eye with inlays prototypes. Consumers increasingly demand high quality products, forcing manufacturers to a greater effort when designing. During the last years, the noise has become a key factor in valuing a product, so the use of psychoacoustic techniques has been extended considerably. The automotive sector has always taken into consideration the noise when designing vehicles. A large number of tools and analysis methods have been developed in order to determine the sound quality of their products. Although the first efforts focussed on establishing the sound quality of the propulsion system, they rapidly spread to other parts of the vehicle like doors, powered windows, etc. The present work focuses on studying the behaviour of electrically adjustable exterior mirrors in vehicles. In order to analyse the noise produced by this kind of devices, four different samples were measured in a semi-anechoic chamber. To establish the pleasantness descriptor of the samples, sixty-two subjects were exposed to an auditory test using two different methods: paired comparison and ranking procedure. The experiments were carried out in three different laboratories: University of Kyushu in Japan (JP), University of Coimbra in Portugal (PT) and University of Alicante in Spain (SP); leading to a cross-cultural study. The results showed a great similarity between the preferences obtained by the two methods.

[EN] Acoustic vortices with subwavelength dimensions and tunable topological charge are theoretically and experimentally synthesized at distances far beyond the Rayleigh diffraction length of the source, using self-demodulation. A dual helical acoustic source is used to generate two primary confocal vortex beams at different frequencies and different topological charges. As a consequence of the conservation of angular momentum during nonlinear wave mixing, a self-demodulated vortex beam at the difference frequency emerges, keeping the spatial features of the primary vortex beams and a topological charge that is the difference of their topological charges. We report subdiffractive vortices the characteristic size of which is 18 times smaller than its wavelength at a distance 2.8 times the Rayleigh diffraction length. The generation and focusing of subwavelength vortices paves the way for long-range communication, biomedical, and wave-matter interaction applications.

[EN] Central nervous system (CNS) pathologies are a prevalent problem in aging populations, creating a need to understand the underlying events in these diseases and develop efficient CNS-targeting drugs. The importance of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is evident, acting both as a physical barrier to drug entry into the CNS and potentially as the cause or aggravator of CNS diseases. The development of a biomimetic BBB invitro model is required for the understanding of BBB-related pathologies and in the screening of drugs targeting the CNS. There is currently great interest in understanding the influence of biochemical and biophysical factors, as these have the potential to greatly improve the barrier function of brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs). Recent advances in understanding how these may regulate barriergenesis in BMECs help promote the development of improved BBB invitro models and therefore novel interventional therapies for pathologies related to its disruption. We present the results of our ground-based astrometric observation campaign of BepiColombo during its Earth fly-by on 2020 April 10. The observational circumstances induced by the fly-by geometry made this event an excellent proxy for a close fly-by or an imminent impact of a natural body with a diameter of a few meters, with the added benefit of having a ground-truth orbit (from radio tracking) to compare with our purely optical orbit determination., The work of TSR was carried out through grant APOSTD/2019/046 by Generalitat Valenciana (Spain). In this work, we test a nondestructive optical method based on the Fresnel–Kirchhoff integral, which could be applied to different fields of engineering, such as detection of small cracks in structures, determination of dimensions for small components, analysis of composition of materials, etc. The basic idea is to apply the Fresnel–Kirchhoff integral method to the study of the properties of small-volume dielectric objects. In this work, we study the validity of this method. To do this, the results obtained by using this technique were compared to those obtained by rigorously solving the Helmholtz equation for a dielectric cylinder of circular cross-section. As an example of the precision of the method, the Fresnel–Kirchhoff integral method was applied to obtain the refractive index of a hair by fitting the theoretical curve to the experimental results of the diffraction pattern of the hair measured with a CCD camera. In a same manner, the method also was applied to obtain the dimensions of a crack artificially created in a piece of plastic. [EN] Background: Obesity and overweight are a serious health problem worldwide with multiple and connected causes. Simultaneously, chatbots are becoming increasingly popular as a way to interact with users in mobile health apps. Objective: This study reports the user-centered design and feasibility study of a chatbot to collect linked data to support the study of individual and social overweight and obesity causes in populations. Methods: We first studied the users' needs and gathered users' graphical preferences through an open survey on 52 wireframes designed by 150 design students; it also included questions about sociodemographics, diet and activity habits, the need for overweight and obesity apps, and desired functionality. We also interviewed an expert panel. We then designed and developed a chatbot. Finally, we conducted a pilot study to test feasibility. Results: We collected 452 answers to the survey and interviewed 4 specialists. Based on this research, we developed a Telegram chatbot named Wakamola structured in six sections: personal, diet, physical activity, social network, user's status score, and project information. We defined a user's status score as a normalized sum (0-100) of scores about diet (frequency of eating 50 foods), physical activity, BMI, and social network. We performed a pilot to evaluate the chatbot implementation among 85 healthy volunteers. Of 74 participants who completed all sections, we found 8 underweight people (11%), 5 overweight people (7%), and no obesity cases. The mean BMI was 21.4 kg/m(2) (normal weight). The most consumed foods were olive oil, milk and derivatives, cereals, vegetables, and fruits. People walked 10 minutes on 5.8 days per week, slept 7.02 hours per day, and were sitting 30.57 hours per week. Moreover, we were able to create a social network with 74 users, 178 relations, and 12 communities. Conclusions: The Telegram chatbot Wakamola is a feasible tool to collect data from a population about sociodemographics, diet patterns, physical activity, BMI, and specific diseases. Besides, the chatbot allows the connection of users in a social network to study overweight and obesity causes from both individual and social perspectives., Moreover, the authors acknowledge the funding support for this study provided by the CrowdHealth Project (Collective Wisdom Driving Public Health Policies, 727560).

In this work it is shown the first characterization of holographic solar concentrators recorded in Biophotopol - one of the greenest photopolymers. Biophotopol is an acrylate-based and water-soluble photopolymer with good recycling properties. The composition of this photopolymer and their thickness are easily changeable, which implies an important advantage vs. others commercialized photopolymers. Good diffraction efficiency and wide acceptance angles are achieved on phase volume transmission holograms by using an optimized composition and thin layers. A curing stage with a white incoherent light has been performed to obtain high temporal stability together with a good diffraction efficiency. Finally, the performance of the holographic lenses as holographic solar concentrators has been evaluated with an electronic setup connected to a polycrystalline silicon photovoltaic cell and a high intensity solar simulator emitting a standard solar spectrum (AM1.5G). [EN] The famous Renaissance frescoes in Valencia¿s Cathedral (Spain) have been kept under confined temperature and relative humidity (RH) conditions for about 300 years, until the removal of the baroque vault covering them, carried out in 2006. In the interest of longer-term preservation and in order to maintain these frescoes in good condition, a unique monitoring system was implemented to record both air temperature and RH. Sensors were installed in different points at the vault of the apse, during the restoration process. The present study proposes a statistical methodology for analyzing a subset of RH data recorded in 2008 and 2010, from the sensors. This methodology is based on fitting different functions and models to the time series, in order to classify the sensors. The methodology proposed, computes classification variables and applies a discriminant technique to them. The classification variables correspond to estimates of parameters of the models and features such as mean and maximum, among others. These features are computed using values of the functions such as spectral density, sample autocorrelation (sample ACF), sample partial autocorrelation (sample PACF), and moving range (MR). The classification variables computed were structured as a matrix. Next, Sparse Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (sPLS-DA) was applied in order to discriminate sensors according to their position in the vault. It was found that the classification of sensors derived from Seasonal ARIMA-TGARCH showed the best performance (i.e., lowest classification error rate). Wetlands play a key role in preserving biodiversity and preventing climate change. Their conservation poses an important and pressing challenge. In the Mediterranean region, one of the key threats to wetland survival is the lack of water due to competition for resources. The selection of the most sustainable water resources for wetland conservation is a complex elicitation problem. A novel Water Resources Sustainability Model (WRSM) focused on water quality has been developed to support the decision-making. This collaborative elicitation model is based on the analytical hierarchy process and uses the reference environmental status of the wetland. The model can be used to discriminate which water resources are more sustainable for the conservation of the wetland. The WRSM has been applied successfully to Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park. The framework enables establishing priorities when analyzing in terms of water quality any surface, recycled or underground water resources.

[EN] Numerical analysis is a tool that is helping engineers over the past decades in design optimization and low-cost fabrication of solar cell devices. The need of modeling tools is used to deeply analyze a device in a soft environment where the time and cost both can be saved before putting a device into fabrication. In this study, lead iodide-based perovskite solar cells were modeled having several feasible planar pin structures for known electron and hole transport layers. The primarily taken pin device structure for analysis was PEDOT:PSS/MAPbI(3)(I)/PCBM. A total of seventy-two different structures were analyzed. From our results, thirty-seven devices have achieved a maximum efficiency of 21%. The best device structure has achieved a 23.29% PCE. [EN] The paper ¿SPICE Model of Photomultiplier Tube Under Different Bias Conditions¿ is commented. We revisit the mathematical formulation to compensate for some ambiguities in the original manuscript, and point out some inconsistencies in the results and reproducibility of the simulations, as well as in the optimized parameters originally obtained with the PSPICE simulation engine. All simulations are recalculated with the NGSPICE software using the corrected parameters and compared against the original figures. [EN] Adequate thermic conditions are required for the preventive conservation of artworks, but such optimum conditions cannot always be achieved in historical buildings such as ancient churches. In those cases, it is of interest to assess the potential risk of punctual changes in indoor environments that can be harmful to artworks. These conditions can be assessed by means of a microclimate monitoring system comprised of a set of energy¿efficient wireless sensors connected to the cloud using IoT techniques. This approach was followed at the baroque church of Saint Thomas and Saint Philip Neri in Valencia (Spain). A set of 26 wireless nodes was installed, which recorded values of temperature and relative humidity every hour for a period of 7 months. Small differences of temperature were obtained among sensors, so that an efficient methodology based on principal component analysis (PCA) was applied for the characterization of similarities and dissimilarities between sensors. Daily ranges of temperatures were studied as well as mean trajectories, differences between days of the week, and changes in the correlation structure of daily median values over time. Results provide a framework for an efficient characterization of temperatures in heritage buildings based on a network of wireless sensors. [EN] Monte Carlo simulations are a unique tool to check the response of a detector and to monitor its performance. For a deep-sea neutrino telescope, the variability of the environmental conditions that can a ect the behaviour of the data acquisition system must be considered, in addition to a reliable description of the active parts of the detector and of the features of physics events, in order to produce a realistic set of simulated events. [EN] Shallow Geothermal Energy (SGE) exploited by vertical close loop Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) is a proven, reliable, and widespread renewable heating and cooling technology. However, in many regions there is still a lack of awareness among policy makers and end users, constituting a major constraint to wider deployment of SGE. In order to contribute to its market consolidation, this work focuses on bringing to light relevant spatial information affecting the suitability of SGE exploitation. This information is the result of the systematization of geological, climatic, and environmental open and available data translated into performance indicators. A set of thematic maps was created using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) comprising the European Member States and other European countries. The relative area and the amount of population affected per indicator was spatially analyzed to determine the most common values found and the affected population. The relationship between area percentage and population affected percentage per indicator was also analyzed and allowed to identify the most common indicators values in areas where high energy demands are expected. Additionally, an example of how this data can be used into a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) framework is shown. (c) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. [EN] The prediction of subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) who will progress to Alzheimer¿s disease (AD) is clinically relevant, and may above all have a significant impact on accelerating the development of new treatments. In this paper, we present a new MRI-based biomarker that enables us to accurately predict conversion of MCI subjects to AD. In order to better capture the AD signature, we introduce two main contributions. First, we present a new graph-based grading framework to combine inter-subject similarity features and intra-subject variability features. This framework involves patch-based grading of anatomical structures and graph-based modeling of structure alteration relationships. Second, we propose an innovative multiscale brain analysis to capture alterations caused by AD at different anatomical levels. Based on a cascade of classifiers, this multiscale approach enables the analysis of alterations of whole brain structures and hippocampus subfields at the same time. During our experiments using the ADNI-1 dataset, the proposed multiscale graph-based grading method obtained an area under the curve (AUC) of 81% to predict conversion of MCI subjects to AD within three years. Moreover, when combined with cognitive scores, the proposed method obtained 85% of AUC. [EN] Introduction People with ulnar, radial or median nerve injuries can present significant impairment of their sensory and motor functions. The prescribed treatment for these conditions often includes electrophysical therapies, whose effectiveness in improving symptoms and function is a source of debate. Therefore, this systematic review aims to provide an integrative overview of the efficacy of these modalities in sensorimotor rehabilitation compared to placebo, manual therapy, or between them. Methods We conducted a systematic review according to PRISMA guidelines. We perform a literature review in the following databases: Biomed Central, Ebscohost, Lilacs, Ovid, PEDro, Sage, Scopus, Science Direct, Semantic Scholar, Taylor & Francis, and Web of Science, for the period 1980¿2020. We include studies that discussed the sensorimotor rehabilitation of people with non-degenerative ulnar, radial, or median nerve injury. We assessed the quality of the included studies using the Risk of Bias Tool described in the Cochrane Handbook of Systematic Reviews of Interventions and the risk of bias across studies with the GRADE approach described in the GRADE Handbook. Results Thirty-eight studies were included in the systematic review and 34 in the meta-analysis. The overall quality of evidence was rated as low or very low according to GRADE criteria. Low-level laser therapy and ultrasound showed favourable results in improving symptom severity and functional status compared to manual therapy. In addition, the low-level laser showed improvements in pinch strength compared to placebo and pain (VAS) compared to manual therapy. Splints showed superior results to electrophysical modalities. The clinical significance of the results was assessed by effect size estimation and comparison with the minimum clinically important difference (MCID). Conclusions We found favourable results in pain relief, improvement of symptoms, functional status, and neurophysiological parameters for some electrophysical modalities, mainly when applied with a splint. Our results coincide with those obtained in some meta-analyses. However, none of these can be considered clinically significant. Polymer nanocomposites are designed and engineered on a nanometer scale with versatile applications including optics and photonics. During the last two decades, different photopolymerizable nano-compounds were introduced and developed to modify polymer properties. In this sense, inorganic and organic nanoparticles have been introduced to increase the refractive index modulation and/or to reduce the shrinkage. Liquid crystal polymer composites have been added to the category of active photopolymer materials with an electrically switchable option. Nowadays, in the design of smart glasses some problems remain on the table, like power consumption, the limitation of the resolution, the wide field of view, etc. The inclusion of holographic optical element has provided some possible solutions. In particular the photopolymers have been reported a good system to bring the photons produced in the image creation to the eye. Our group proposed an alternative scheme using transmission holographic elements. The fabrication architecture was tested with different photopolymers in order to optimize their chemical composition, and we proposed three schemes adapted to each material properties. In this paper we study the influence of the initiator concentration, for Holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal photopolymer, on the refractive index modulation and on the tunable properties of these holographic optical elements. The telescopes will detect extraterrestrial and atmospheric neutrinos by means of the incident photons induced by the passage of relativistic charged particles through the seawater as a consequence of a neutrino interaction. The telescopes are configured in a three-dimensional grid of digital optical modules, each hosting 31 photomultipliers. [EN] Ultrasound focusing is a hot topic due to its multiple applications in many fields, including biomedical imaging, thermal ablation of cancerous tissues, and non destructive testing in industrial environments. In such applications, the ability to control the focal distance of the ultrasound device in real-time is a key advantage over conventional devices with fixed focal parameters. Here, we present a method to achieve multiple time-modulated ultrasound foci using a single planar monofocal Fresnel Zone Plate. The method takes advantage of the focal distance linear dependence on the operating frequency of this kind of lenses to design a sequence of contiguous modulated rectangular pulses that achieve different focal distances and intensities as a function of time. [EN] Beam-column joints suffer intense damage from seismic events and are the cause of many buildings collapsing. These zones present complex behaviour under cyclic loads, including tensile-compression cycles, which make reinforcement adherence worse and cause severe cracking in concrete. Although columns can be strengthened by various methods (e.g. concrete jacketing, fibre-reinforced polymers and steel jacketing-caging), beam column joints require complex systems being applied, but are not always effective. In Europe, fitting steel caging around columns is one of the most frequently used techniques, although its effectiveness against seismic events requires further study. The aim of this work is to analyse the behaviour of beam-column joints strengthened by steel caging subjected to cyclic loading, for which an ambitious experimental campaign was carried out on seven fullscale steel-caged specimens with a variety of strengthening solutions at joints. We apply the polar decomposition of the Mueller matrix describing a liquid-crystal-on-silicon display to identify the diattenuator, depolarizer, and retarder contributions as a function of the gray level. The retarder contribution is expressed in terms of the equivalent Jones matrix to apply previous techniques to evaluate the phase modulation. This allows searching for optimized polarization configurations for phase- or amplitude-only modulation responses. We present results for λ=633 nm showing a phase-only modulation up to 2π rad and flat intensity modulation. The Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUV) designed for the detection and neutralization of naval mines are characterized by their high requirements regarding the reduction of the signatures of a vessel (thermal, acoustic, magnetic, etc.), all of them must be reduced in order not to be detected by the mines during the mission. This research work focuses on the reduction of the thermal signature transmitted by the UUV hull, where the use of phase change materials (PCM) is proposed as thermal insulation, placing it between the internal heat source of the UUV and the pressure hull, with the aim of drastically increasing the time in which the external face of the hull of the UUV is within a range of 3 °C and 5 °C temperature increase, allowing it to perform its mission without being detected by the thermal sensors of current naval mines. The simulation will be carried out using the Network Simulation Method for the resolution of the governing equations, which will allow the optimization of the necessary insulation thickness according to the required mission profile. In addition, it is proposed an expression that relates the PCM thickness and the time needed to reach a certain temperature increase.

Emerging risk models are still scarce and far from agreed upon. They are currently the focus of increasing interest in the occupational context. Consequently, frameworks that deal with emerging risk management in industrial contexts are very recent or, even still, in the development and maturation stage. Uncertainty should be considered as the main characteristic of emerging risk in this context. It is as such that the main objective of this paper is to develop a qualitative approach inspired by meta-learning lessons to the selection of strategies for emerging risk management, considering uncertainty as the main decision variable in occupational contexts. To this end, uncertainty has been integrated, as a combination of knowledge and understanding, in a theoretical framework on emerging risk. An emerging risk classification scheme has been developed with the results obtained. This scheme makes it possible to estimate the level of emerging risk and management strategies based on the combination of uncertainty and the potential consequences of emerging risk. Such approach has been applied to three case studies with different evolutionary degrees of emerging risk: exoskeletons; nanomaterials; and industrial automation. The proposed approach could be considered primarily as a qualitative tool applicable to the process of pre-assessment and communication of emerging risk. [EN] Higher education is continuously evolving to keep up with the challenges posed by the introduction of information and communication technologies (ICT) to education. In this sense, distance learning is booming, with an increasing number of higher education students taking advantage of the flexibility remote learning provides. The School of Agricultural Engineering and Environment (ETSIAMN) of Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) has been gradually incorporating ICT tools in its bachelor and master degrees for the last two decades. As a result, many college students and university instructors are familiar with ICT techniques. However, the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis has put distance learning in the spotlight like never before, forcing students, faculty, and staff to adapt to the new situation with hardly any preparation time. For that reason, it is convenient to analyse in depth the results and impact of the teaching and evaluation methodologies developed and applied during this critical period, as a way to detect and amend potential inefficiencies in the learning process. The specific goal of this study was to analyse the teaching period during the COVID-19 crisis in ETSIAMN, which covered the spring semester of the academic year 2019-2020. To this purpose, 114 instructors and 274 students were surveyed in July 2020, belonging to four bachelor degrees (agricultural and biological engineering; forestry engineering; food engineering; and biotechnology), and three master degrees (agricultural and biological engineering; forestry engineering, and oenology). Regarding the experimental design for the survey, three main blocks were identified: the first block corresponds to teaching methodologies, comparing students and faculty preferences for distance lecturing; the second block focuses on evaluation modalities and exam configurations; and the final block centers on the difficulties found by both students and lecturers along the adaptation process from conventional to distance teaching. Results showed that instructors and students preferred a combination of live streaming with recorded lectures, being multiple choice the favourite examination type, although many students rated first a project-based evaluation. Overall, students rejected tests with no possibilities to go back on already answered questions, and instructors mostly preferred limiting the time to complete the on-line tests. The lack of motivation was the main barrier encountered by students to achieve an effective learning. Finally, a set of counterweighting measures to improve and promote the successful implementation of distance learning in engineering colleges is proposed.
