At present, there is no operation experience of static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) that accessed to the power grid. So, it is necessary to study the operating characteristics of the power grid and the ability of static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) regulating the power flow. First, the vector graph model of the SSSC regulating the line power flow is established. Then several typical ways of SSSC accessing the 220kV transmission lines are analyzed. Taking the SSSC that located in a Tianjin 220kV line as an example to study the regulating power flow characteristics in the subarea grid by using the PSD-BPA software. The results show that under the same operation mode, for the double-circuit lines, the active power flow on the line installed with SSSC changes and the active power flow on the other line changes in the reverse direction. However the active power flow change of the section of the double-circuit lines has the same trend with that of the active power flow through the SSSC. The active power adjustment ability of the SSSC decreases slightly with the increase of the subarea load, but the influence the subarea load is little.
