A total of 35 psychology department members from 21 universities assessed the relevance and efficacy of the New School Psychology Bulletin (NSPB), a graduate student journal, to training in psychology. Overall, a small sample of psychology department members viewed NSPB as an effective vehicle for student training. Perceptions among faculty were less favorable than previous research demonstrated with a student sample. The majority of respondents reported that students in their programs learn about manuscript preparation but noted that 50% or fewer students actually publish in peer-reviewed journals during graduate school. This suggests that although faculty members perceive that their students are adequately trained in this domain, a large number of students are not putting these skills into practice by submitting manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals.

In diesem Beitrag wird eine nicht-invasive Methode zur indirekten Messung des Polyethylenabriebs bei Kniegelenktotalendoprothesen basierend auf Standardrontgenbildern vorgestellt. Hierzu werden die dreidimensionalen (3D-) Lageparameter der tibialen und der femoralen Komponente aus der im Rontgenbild segmentierten Kontur der Prothesenteile geschatzt. Erste Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, das das Verfahren geeignet ist, um den minimalen Abstand der Prothesenteile und somit den Abrieb des Tibiaplateaus mit hinreichender Genauigkeit zu bestimmen.

From the late 1880s until the outbreak of war in Europe in 1914 thousands of Ukrainian peasants emigrated from the Austrian provinces of Galicia and Bukovyna, seeking agricultural lands on the frontiers of settlement in Canada and Brazil. This paper traces the process of emigration, settlement, and the creation of the Ukrainian pioneer diaspora through the actions of the Morski family of Khmelyska, Galicia, whose members established pioneer settlements in Manitoba, Canada, and in Parana, Brazil. The effects of the physical environment and of the institutional frameworks experienced on each frontier help to explain differences in the rate of economic progress, assimilation and integration into the mainstream culture of the host societies.

Jewish settlers established agricultural settlements in the Canadian Prairie Provinces from the early 1880s through the first decade of the 20th century. Without exception these settlements were eventually abandoned by their founders. Today there are no Jewish rural agricultural communities in western Canada. Environmental adversity and lack of farming experience as major factors in the failure of the Jewish settlements are questioned. This study argues that Jewish pioneers abandoned their farms when they were unable to reconcile the demands of religious observance with the dispersed pattern of settlement mandated by the Dominion Lands Act of 1872. Poor coordination of aid by Jewish philanthropic institutions and their failure to strive for the concentration of Jewish colonization in a single geographic area exacerbated the social and religious problems faced by rural Jewish settlers. For many, relocation to a Jewish urban community was the only way to remain observant to Jewish religious law.

Injuries of the penis are uncommon but represent urological emergencies. We report 3 cases of penile trauma illustrating the diversity of penile injury presentation. Radiological investigations are only mandatory if there is any suspicion of a urethral injury. Primary surgical approach is recommended in cases of penile fracture or local wound infection. An immediate operative exploration with removal of hematoma and primary defect closure should be done in every case. Surgical management should not be delayed to avoid late complications.

In this paper we present a method for measuring the wear of the polyethylene inlay in knee joint endoprostheses from standard X-ray images. Our approach is to estimate the spatial position of the tibial and femoral components of the prostheses from their contours in the X-ray image. When we know the exact shape of these two components, we can calculate the minimal spatial distance between them which approximates the remaining thickness of the inlay. First results show that this approach might provide sufficient accuracy for the given task.

One hundred consecutive patients who had trauma to the knee were examined by sonography and double-contrast arthrography to evaluate the presence or absence of popliteal cyst. In 58 cases both tests were negative, while in 15 both were positive. Each of those 15 patients had pain and/or a palpable mass behind the knee. In 27 remaining patients the arthrogram demonstrated a popliteal cyst that was not detected on the sonogram. None of the 27 patients complained of pain in the popliteal fossa or had a palpable mass in the area. The sonographic findings, however, showed good correlation with these clinical symptoms. This paper attempts to analyze these discrepancies and to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

The literature on this subject is slight, embracing in all about twenty cases. In five the gonococcus was obtained only from the voided specimen; in two the pyelitis was due to a mixed infection; in four no cultures were obtained; in one a nephrectomy was done and the diagnosis made from the specimen; in four the disease was only recognized at autopsy. In only four were cultures obtained from the kidney during the course of the disease. There are certain features about my case that are of special interest; it shows the possibility that this complication of gonorrhea may be more common than the comparative scarcity of the literature would indicate. The report of my own case is as follows: History. —The patient, a man, aged 27, came under treatment Nov. 6, 1911, complaining of a urethral discharge and painful micturition. He had had two previous attacks of gonorrhea in
