1. Temporal trend of clinical events in patients with atrial fibrillation on edoxaban therapy: results from the non-interventional global ETNA-AF program

Abstract

Background Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) who initiated vitamin K antagonist (VKA) were at highest risk of stroke and bleeding in the first few months of therapy. Understanding of the temporal trend of clinical events in AF patients on non-VKA oral anticoagulant (NOAC) therapy should aid therapeutic decisions. Purpose To evaluate the temporal trend of clinical events in AF patients receiving edoxaban in routine clinical practice in the Global ETNA-AF program. Methods Global ETNA-AF is a multicentre, prospective, noninterventional program evaluating the safety and effectiveness of edoxaban in patients from European and Asian countries. Thromboembolic, bleeding and death events were analysed separately for the 1st and 2nd year of the follow-up period, using a time-to-first-event estimation of cumulative incidence and annual rate via Kaplan-Meier method. Results A total of 27,617 patients were included in this analysis, 48.6% from Europe and 51.4% from Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Baseline characteristics were consistent with typical AF population in real world studies (Table 1). Approximately 83% of patients received the recommended edoxaban dose. Annualized rates of ischaemic stroke and major bleeding (ISTH) were lower in the 2nd year than in the 1st year: ischaemic stroke 0.59% (95% CI, 0.50–0.70) vs 0.86% (95% CI, 0.75–0.98), p=0.015; major bleeding 0.87% (95% CI, 0.75–1.00) vs 1.15% (95% CI, 1.02–1.29), p=0.036. The trend toward lower rates of ischaemic stroke and major bleeding in the 2nd year was consistent across regions. All-cause mortality increased slightly from the 1st year to the 2nd year, which was not statistically significant and was not driven by cardiovascular (CV) mortality (Table 2). Conclusion In routine clinical practice in the Global ETNA-AF program, major bleeding and ischaemic stroke rates in >27,000 patients on edoxaban therapy declined from 1st year to 2nd year. Further analyses will investigate whether such trend is influenced by selection for healthier patients over time. Longer follow-up is needed to better understand long-term trends. The large dataset from the global prospective, noninterventional ETNA-AF program allows for analysis of the impact of age on clinical events in AF patients treated with edoxaban. Purpose Evaluate the safety and effectiveness of edoxaban by age subgroups and the impact of age on clinical events. Methods Baseline patient characteristics, thromboembolic and bleeding events, and mortality data were collected from patients with 2-year follow-up in ETNA-AF program and analyzed in defined age subgroups. Cox regression analysis was conducted using age as a continuous variable and clinical events as outcome variables. Results A total of 27,617 patients were categorized into four age subgroups: Conclusion Two-year follow-up data from the global ETNA-AF program support the use of edoxaban as a safe and effective treatment for AF patients across all age groups, including the very elderly, in routine clinical care. The impact of age on the risk of ICH was smaller than that of ischemic stroke and major bleeding.

Main funding source(s): Daiichi Sankyo Background and Purpose The large global Edoxaban Treatment in routiNe clinical prActice (ETNA)-AF program was designed to assess the safety and effectiveness of edoxaban, complementing randomized clinical trials. Methods ETNA collects data on patient characteristics and clinical events in unselected AF patients treated with edoxaban for stroke prevention, integrating data from prospective, noninterventional studies conducted in Europe, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. Results The 2-year follow-up analysis included 27,617 patients, the majority of whom (82.6%) received the recommended dose according to the local label. At baseline, the mean age was 73.6 ± 9.8 years and 58.1% were male. Half of the patients (50.5%) were 75 years or older. The CHA2DS2-VASc score was 3.3 ± 1.5, and the modified HAS-BLED score was 2.4 ± 1.1. The rate of ischemic stroke was 0.74%/yr, major bleeding 1.02%/yr, intracranial hemorrhage 0.29%/yr, and major gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding 0.51%/yr. All-cause mortality was 3.13%/yr, and cardiovascular (CV) mortality 1.45%/yr (see Table). Conclusion The rates of ischemic stroke and major bleeding events remained low globally and across regions during the two-year follow-up period in AF patients treated with edoxaban. Abstract

Summary Microbial research in space is being conducted for almost 50 years now. The closed system of the International Space Station (ISS) has acted as a microbial observatory for the past 10 years, conducting research on adaptation and survivability of microorganisms exposed to space conditions. This adaptation can be either beneficial or detrimental to crew members and spacecraft. Therefore, it becomes crucial to identify the impact of two primary stress conditions, namely, radiation and microgravity, on microbial life aboard the ISS. Elucidating the mechanistic basis of microbial adaptation to space conditions aids in the development of countermeasures against their potentially detrimental effects and allows us to harness their biotechnologically important properties. Several microbial processes have been studied, either in spaceflight or using devices that can simulate space conditions. However, at present, research is limited to only a few microorganisms, and extensive research on biotechnologically important microorganisms is required to make long-term space missions self-sustainable., Graphical abstract, Microbiology ; Space Sciences

Abstract

In order to keep pharmacy education relevant to a rapidly-evolving future, this study sought to identify key insights from leaders from a broad array of pharmacy and non-pharmacy industries on the future of the pharmacy profession, pharmaceutical sciences, and pharmacy education. Thought leaders representing a variety of industries were surveyed regarding their perspectives on the future of pharmacy practice, pharmaceutical science disciplines, and pharmacy education in seven domains. From 46 completed surveys, top challenges/threats were barriers that limit clinical practice opportunities, excessive supply of pharmacists, and high drug costs. Major changes in the drug distribution system, automation/robotics, and new therapeutic approaches were identified as the top technological disrupters. Key drivers of pharmacy education included the primary care provider shortage, growing use of technology and data, and rising drug costs. The most significant sources of job growth outside of retail and hospital settings were managed care organizations, technology/biotech/pharmaceutical companies, and ambulatory care practices. Needs in the industry included clinical management of complex patients, leadership and management, pharmaceutical scientists, and implementation science. Knowledge gaps were pharmacists not recognizing their value on the health care team, preparation to embrace and lead change, and expertise in data science and analytics. Pharmacy schools will need to address several disruptive trends to future-proof their curricula, including expanding patient management skills, leadership and management training, technology, and data analytics.

6. Edoxaban treatment of elderly patients with atrial fibrillation in routine clinical practice: 1-year results of the non-interventional Global ETNA-AF program

Abstract

Background The prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) and the need for appropriate anticoagulation increase with age. The benefit/risk profile of direct oral anticoagulants such as edoxaban in elderly population with AF in regular clinical practice is therefore of particular interest. Purpose Analyses of Global ETNA-AF data were performed to report patient characteristics, edoxaban treatment, and 1-year clinical events by age subgroups. Methods Global ETNA-AF is a multicentre, prospective, noninterventional program conducted in Europe, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and other Asian countries. Demographics, baseline characteristics, and 1-year clinical event data were analysed in four age subgroups. Results Of 26,823 patients included in this analysis, 50.4% were ≥75 years old and 11.6% were ≥85 years. Increase in age was generally associated with lower body weight, lower creatinine clearance, higher CHA2DS2-VASc and HAS-BLED scores, and a higher percentage of patients receiving the reduced dose of 30 mg daily edoxaban. At 1-year, rates of ISTH major bleeding and ischaemic stroke were generally low across all age subgroups. The proportion of intracranial haemorrhage within major bleeding events was similar across age groups. All-cause mortality increased with age more than cardiovascular mortality. Conclusion Data from Global ETNA-AF support the safety and effectiveness of edoxaban in elderly AF patients (including ≥85 years) in routine clinical care with only a small increase in intracranial haemorrhage. Abstract

Isosbestic plasmonic nanostructures, which feature an invariance of optical absorption and heat generation upon varying the incident light polarization, have broad application in many fields such as nanochemistry, optical nanoantennas, and microbubble formation. In this study, we focus on the isosbestic optical absorption by metallic dimers and systematically investigate the coupling between two interacting particles by using both the superposition T-matrix method and dipole approximation model. We observe that the interparticle coupling effects on particle absorption can be both positive and negative, compared to an isolated particle. Meanwhile, the optical absorption properties of spheres with small size parameters can realize more flexible control through changing the sphere size, interparticle distance, and incident light wavelength. For illuminations with incident light propagating perpendicularly to the line joining the centers of the two spheres, isosbestic conditions will be satisfied as long as the absorption efficiencies for transverse and longitudinal illuminations are equal. For transverse illuminations along the dimer axis, the ratio of absorption efficiency of the two metallic spheres presents the fluctuation change with the interparticle distance. Owing to the strong interparticle coupling effects, it even leads to the absorption efficiency of the far sphere being higher than that of the near sphere. Our results are aimed at expanding our understanding of the interparticle electromagnetic coupling effects on isosbestic light absorption in plasmonic nanoparticle systems.

Abstract

Light scattering and radiative transfer in optically soft particle systems are important problems in many fields of natural sciences and engineering, such as biology, ocean optics, atmospheric science, solar energy utilization, and so on. Due to the effects of particle agglomeration and dependent scattering, the radiative transfer problem will become more complex with the increase of particle volume fraction. In this study, the scattering properties and radiative transfer characteristics of densely packed optically soft particle systems, with consideration of the effects of dependent scattering and particle agglomeration, are investigated. The dependent scattering properties of densely packed silicon-dioxide spherical particles embedded in water are calculated by using the Lorenz-Mie theory and Percus-Yevick sticky hard-sphere model. The directional-hemispherical reflectance of the dispersed plane-parallel layer is obtained by using the Monte Carlo method. The results show that dependent scattering and particle agglomeration have significant influence on the scattering properties of particles. With the increase of particle agglomeration degree, the scattering coefficients and asymmetry factors of the particles increase obviously, which can be even larger than the results for independent scattering under certain circumstances. Due to the combined interaction of multiple scattering, dependent scattering, and particle agglomeration, for different size particles, the variation tendency of the hemispherical reflectance is obviously different with increasing particle agglomeration degree.

Abstract

Introduction/Background Advanced/recurrent gynecologic cancer is a clinical challenge. The ideal treatment was controversial and how to manage recurrent condition was also an unsolved problem. We present four advanced cervical/endometrial cancer cases who were heavily treated before and they achieved complete remission after curative intent including immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). Methodology We retrospectively reviewed clinical records of these four such patients. Results Case 1: A 51-year-old nulliparous woman was diagnosed with cervical adenocarcinoma, International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage IVB, treated by concurrent chemoradiation and maintenance bevacizumab. Bone metastasis treated with radiotherapy focus on metastasis sacrum lesion and pembrolizumab combined with 5-FU and etoposide chemotherapy sequentially. She remains disease free with overall survival (OS) 35.3+ months. Case 2: A 34-year-old woman had cervical adenocarcinoma, FIGO stage IVA, treated by chemoirradiation. Central pelvic recurrence at 8 years was treated by total pelvic exenteration with intra-operative radiotherapy (IORT) for involved pelvic side wall margin, and salvage chemotherapy. Re-recurrence at para-aortic lymph node (PALN) found later. She achieved remission with pembrolizumab and radiotherapy. Case 3: A 42-year-old woman had cervical squamous cell carcinoma, FIGO IIIC and recurrence once that she received operation and chemoirradiation in China. Second relapse at left para-spinal and paraureter soft tissue noted. Pembrolizumab, cisplatin and topotecan with radiotherapy was applied. She is currently disease free (OS 134+ months). Case 4: A 39-year-old woman had endometrial carcinoma, FIGO stage IIIC1. She received primary operation and chemo-radiotherapy. First recurrence at left pelvic lymph node was treated by operation, intra-operative brachytherapy and chemotherapy. 2nd relapse at left PALN was salvaged by proton therapy to PALN, chemotherapy, and pembrolizumab. No disease detected till now (OS 77+ months). Conclusion Incorporating ICIs to proton therapy and chemotherapy provide long disease-free survival to advanced/recurrent gynecologic cancer failed traditional chemoirradiation. Background As populations age, prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) and ensuing need for oral anticoagulation increase. Benefits and risks of nonvitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants such as edoxaban in the frail, elderly population with AF in regular clinical care is of special interest. Purpose Data from Global ETNA-AF capturing almost 2ehz745.1164 patients treated with edoxaban in Europe, Japan, and Korea/Taiwan, was analyzed to compare outcomes in patients Methods Global ETNA-AF is a multinational, multicentre, prospective, noninterventional program (EU: NCT02944019, Japan: UMINehz745.116417011, Korea/Taiwan: NCT02951039). Demographics, baseline characteristics, and 1-year outcome data were reported for 19416 patients classified into 3 age categories. Results At 1-year follow-up, rates of major bleeding (including intracranial haemorrhage [ICH]) and ischaemic stroke were generally low. All-cause and CV mortality increased with age; CV mortality was a minor proportion of all-cause mortality in all age groups. Rates of major bleeding and ischaemic stroke increased slightly with age, but to a lesser extent than all-cause and CV mortality. There was no increase in the rate of ICH with age. Conclusion Global data from this set of unselected patients support the use of edoxaban as a safe and effective treatment in elderly and very elderly patients with AF in regular clinical care. Abstract

The management of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in pregnancy is a unique issue. Telbivudine (LdT) is recommended to block HBV mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) in the third trimester. However, the safety of LdT treatment during the entire pregnancy for the long-term growth of infants is unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and long-term safety of LdT for the entire pregnancy period. This retrospective cohort study included 40 pregnant women and 43 children from 2011 to 2017. The antiviral effects and maternal abnormalities were evaluated. In addition, adverse events regarding infants at delivery and HBV vaccination outcomes were recorded. The status of physical development in the children during follow-up was also evaluated. Among pregnant women, the rates of HBV DNA flare were 5.00% during pregnancy and 7.50% postpartum, and the HBeAg seroconversion rates were 7.50% during pregnancy and 7.50% postpartum. No severe maternal abnormalities were observed. Regarding the infants, no one was positive for HBsAg, and only one infant was negative for anti-HBs in children over 7 months of age. Furthermore, no birth defects or severe adverse events were observed at delivery, and 97.67% normal height and 93.02% normal weight in children were observed on follow-up until 5 years of age. In conclusion, LdT use for the entire pregnancy is both effective for treating pregnant women and blocking HBV MTCT. Moreover, LdT is safe for women and infants. Most importantly, the long-term follow-up indicated that LdT is safe and does not affect the growth of children.

Abstract

This paper focuses on polarized radiative transfer in a thin layer composed of titanium dioxide particles while considering the effect of host medium absorption on particle scattering. The single-scattering properties of particles in an absorbing medium are calculated using the modified Lorenz-Mie program recently developed based on the first-principles theory of electromagnetic scattering, and the vector radiative transfer equation is solved by using the spectral element method. The relative errors of Stokes parameters caused by using the conventional Lorenz-Mie theory are systemically investigated. The results show that neglecting the effect of host medium absorption on particle scattering has a more significant impact on the radiation intensity than the polarization components in most cases. Meanwhile, the relative errors of Stokes parameters induced by using the conventional Lorenz-Mie theory obviously increase with the increase of the host medium absorption index and particle size parameter. Due to the larger scattering coefficients and scattering albedos (i.e., for the case of particle size parameter x=10.0 in this study), the relative errors of Stokes parameters of monodisperse particles are obviously larger than those of polydisperse particles. Moreover, it is found that the relative errors of the Stokes parameters change nonlinearly with the particle volume fraction, especially for large size particles.

Abstract

Background Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a well-known risk factor for cognitive dysfunction in aged populations. However, there are inconsistent reports about impaired fasting glucose or prediabetes as an independent risk factor for cognitive function. Glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 (GAD65) is the key enzyme responsible for γ-aminobutyric acid synthesis in the central nervous system. Antibodies against GAD65 (GAD65Abs) are not only detected in approximately 80% of early-onset type 1 DM, but also linked to several neurological disorders. Aim This study aims to investigate the association between GAD65Ab titer levels and cognitive performance. In addition, we assessed the effect of GAD65Ab on cognitive function in adults with normal fasting glucose, prediabetes and DM. Methods A total of 328 subjects aged 49.10 ± 5.72 years were enrolled from the Third Health and Nutrition Examination Survey dataset. Cognitive performance was assessed by three computerized neurobehavioral tests, including the serial digit learning test, simple reaction time test (SRTT) and symbol-digit substitution test (SDST). Results Subjects with higher GAD65Ab titers had significantly poorer cognitive function in the SRTT and SDST (P Conclusions These results indicate that GAD65Ab may be a potential marker for cognitive impairment in non-diabetic adults.

Abstract

Highly transparent substrates are of interest for a variety of applications, but it is difficult to measure their optical constants precisely, especially the absorption index in the transparent spectral region. In this paper, a combination technique (DOPTM-EM) using both the double optical pathlength transmission method (DOPTM) and the ellipsometry method (EM) is presented to obtain the optical constants of highly transparent substrates, which overcomes the deficiencies of both the two methods. The EM cannot give accurate result of optical constants when the absorption index is very weak. The DOPTM is suitable to retrieve the weak absorption index; however, two sets of solutions exist for the retrieved refractive index and absorption index, and only one is the true value that needs to be identified. In the DOPTM-EM, the optical constants are measured first by using the EM and set as the initial value in the gradient-based inverse method used in the DOPTM, which ensures only the true optical constants are retrieved. The new method simultaneously obtains the refractive index and the absorption index of highly transparent substrate without relying on the Kramers–Kronig relation. The optical constants of three highly transparent substrates (polycrystalline BaF2, CaF2, and MgF2) were experimentally determined within wavelength range from ultraviolet to infrared regions (0.2–14 µm). The presented method will facilitate the measurement of optical constants for highly transparent materials.

Abstract

Background Recipient hepatectomy can be complicated by severe bleeding during caudate lobe dissection in living-donor liver transplantation (LDLT), especially when the inferior vena cava is encased or with dense adhesions from prior interventions. Total hepatic vascular exclusion (TVE) including total hepatic inflow (Pringle maneuver) and occlusion of supra- and infra-hepatic inferior vena cava during the partial hepatectomy has been studied well, but it has not been mentioned regarding recipient hepatectomy in LDLT. The aim of this study is to evaluate hemodynamic impact and surgical outcome by using the technique of TVE in LDLT. Methods From April 2010 to June 2010, 30 consecutive LDLT recipients at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital with TVE (TVE group, n = 14) or without TVE (non-TVE group, n = 16) for the caudate lobe dissection were analyzed retrospectively. Results The TVE group had a mean decrease in systolic blood pressure and cardiac index of 21% and 41% during caudate dissection in recipient hepatectomy, respectively. The TVE group had shorter time for caudate mobilization and less blood loss compared with the non-TVE group (3904 mL vs. 5650 mL, P = .461). Two patients in the non-TVE group were shifted to TVE as a salvage procedure to control bleeding. Three patients in the non-TVE group underwent relaparotomy for homeostasis. Conclusions Short-term TVE is a technically feasible procedure and should be considered during recipient hepatectomy with difficult caudate lobe dissection in LDLT to create a bloodless surgical field. Most patients tolerated the TVE without hemodynamic impact under anesthetic management.

Abstract

The harmonic operation in a terahertz gyrotron traveling-wave amplifier (gyro-TWA) permits a reduced magnetic field, whereas a harmonic multiplying gyro-TWA enables magnetic field reduction and frequency multiplication. This study comparatively analyzes the 400-GHz fourth-harmonic gyro-TWAs and fourth-harmonic multiplying gyro-TWAs with axis-encircling electron beams. This property of the gyro-TWAs with axis-encircling electron beams enables us avoid the appearance of the majority of the competing modes. According to the simulation results obtained using multi-mode codes, the attenuating severs suppress the remaining competing modes. In the case of a harmonic gyro-TWA containing a sever section, the copper-section start-oscillation length is significantly influenced by a decrease in the sever-section radius when compared with an increase in the sever-section length. Furthermore, a stable fourth-harmonic TE41-mode gyro-TWA containing sever sections is proposed. We propose fourth-harmonic TE41-mode multiplying gyro-TWAs, where the drive stages operate in the fundamental-harmonic TE11 mode to reduce the frequency of the drive wave. We subsequently develop a stable fourth-harmonic multiplying gyro-TWA with sever sections in the drive and amplified stages to avoid the competing modes and enhance the output power. The stable high-gain fourth-harmonic gyro-TWA can yield a peak output power of 2.7 kW at 400.6 GHz with a saturated gain of 75 dB and a bandwidth of 0.7 GHz for a 75-kV and 2-A electron beam with an axial velocity spread of 3%. Furthermore, a peak output power of 1.7 kW can be obtained by the fourth-harmonic multiplying gyro-TWA at 400.4 GHz with a saturated gain of 57 dB and a bandwidth of 0.4 GHz. Subsequently, we calculate the power and gain scaling for the harmonic gyro-TWA and harmonic multiplying gyro-TWA.

Abstract

Background Immunosuppressive neutrophils with surface expression of lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1 (LOX-1) existed at both tumor sites and blood in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Their immunosuppressive activities were proved to be induced by endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. In addition, ER stress of cancer cells could be “transmissed” to nearby myeloid cells such as dendritic cells and macrophages. Based on these findings, we hypothesized that ER stress of HNSCC could induce LOX-1 expression and immunosuppression of nearby neutrophils. Methods Conditioned medium (CM) from SCC25 cancer cells with or without treatment of thapsigargin (THG), a common ER stress inducer, was collected. Human neutrophils, isolated from peripheral blood of healthy donors, were then cultured in differently prepared conditioned medium. After 4 hours of culture, LOX-1 expression of neutrophils was evaluated by flow cytometry. In addition, the immunosuppressive effects of these conditioned neutrophils were evaluated by their abilities to inhibit nonspecific T cell proliferation using interleukin-2 (IL-2)/anti-CD3/anti-CD28 system. Results Higher percentages of neutrophils expressed LOX-1 after they were cultured in CM from THG-treated SCC 25 cells than in CM from naive SCC 25 cells. Moreover, conditioned neutrophils by THG-treated SCC 25 cells had more inhibitory effects in T cell proliferation than conditioned neutrophils by naive SCC25 cells. Abstract

The optical constants of five highly transparent substrates (polycrystalline BaF2, CaF2, MgF2, ZnSe, and ZnS) were experimentally determined based on a combined technique using both the double optical pathlength transmission method and the ellipsometry method within temperature range 20°C-350°C in the ultraviolet-infrared region (0.2-20 μm). The results show that the refractive index spectra of polycrystalline BaF2, CaF2, and MgF2 are similar, but differ from that of polycrystalline ZnSe and ZnS. The thermo-optic coefficient of these highly transparent substrates increases with increasing temperature. The absorption indices show a significant temperature-dependent behavior, which increases with increasing temperature from 20°C to 350°C over the transparent region. For the sake of application, the fitted formulas of the refractive index of the five highly transparent substrates as a function of wavelength and temperature are presented.

Abstract

The optical constants of vegetable oils and biodiesels are the basic input parameters in the study of the thermal radiation transfer and monitoring the productivity of vegetable oils converting to biodiesels. In this work, a combined ellipsometry-transmission method is presented to obtain the optical constants of palm oil and palm oil biodiesel between 20°C and 150°C in the spectral range 600–4100 cm−1 and to study the temperature effect on the optical constants. In the combined method, a modified ellipsometry method is used to measure the optical constants of palm oil and palm oil biodiesel for the whole researched wave bands. For the weak absorption regions in which the ellipsometry method cannot give precise absorption indices, the transmission method is conducted to get the absorption indices using the refractive indices obtained by the proposed ellipsometry method. Deionized water and methanol are taken as examples to verify the combined ellipsometry-transmission method. It is shown that the combined method can overcome the deficiencies of the traditional ellipsometry and transmission method, which can be used for the measurements of both strong and weak absorption wave bands. The experimental analyses indicate that temperature exerts a noticeable influence on the infrared optical constants of palm oil and palm oil biodiesel. With the increase of temperature, the refractive indices at certain wavenumbers decrease nearly linearly, and the amplitudes of dominant absorption peaks show a decreasing trend. The absorption peaks located around 3550 cm−1 show blueshift trends as temperature increases. Comparing these two kinds of oils, palm oil presents larger values in refractive indices and dominant absorption peaks.

Abstract

A heavily germanium-doped (Ge-doped) silica fiber with a four-layer refractive index profile is proposed to obtain all normal flat dispersion property. The waveguide dispersion in the fiber can be modified by adjusting the fiber parameters, including the refractive indices and the core radiuses. As a result, the flat normal dispersion in the fiber can be obtained in the wavelength range of 1540–2600 nm, where the values of the dispersion slope are between $-$ 0.0058 and 0.03 $\hbox{ps/nm}^{2}/\hbox{km}$ . Furthermore, the numerical results show that the flat-top supercontinuum spectrum ranging from 1000 to 2600 nm can be generated by launching pump pulses at the wavelength of 1550 nm in the heavily Ge-doped fiber with a four-layer refractive index profile.

Abstract

To overcome the hysteresis of a tip/tilt mirror(TTM)in an adaptive optical system and to improve its linearity and control precision,this paper researches the nonlinear effects of the TTM.A compensation method based on the frequency-dependent Mutified-Prandtl-Ishlinskii(MPI)model is proposed for online adaptive inverse compensation of the hysteresis nonlinearity of the TTM.By combining with PID feedback control algorithm,an adaptive inverse feedforward composite control algorithm is proposed.In which,the adaptive inverse feedforward overcomes the hysteresis curve changes due to the frequency factors,and the PID algorithm improves the overall control performance.A second-order model of the TTM is established to estimate the output of the TTM system,which solves the reference signals of the MPI model,avoids adding extra feedforward sensors,and ensures the utilization of light energies.Experiment results indicate that this algorithm effectively solves the problemof hysteresis nonlinearity of the TTM,the 15 Hz hysteresis ratio of the TTM fells from 24.28% to1.17%,and the linearity is improved by about 95%.As compared with the traditional PID algorithm,the control precision has increased by about 60%.It concludes that this composite control algorithm can compensate the hysteresis nonlinearity of the TTM effectively,and the control precision of the TTM is improved in adaptive optical systems.

Abstract

Perpendicular Spin-Transfer Torque (STT) MRAM is a promising technology in terms of read/write speed, low power consumption and non-volatility, but there has not been a demonstration of high density manufacturability at small geometries. In this paper we present an unprecedented demonstration of a robust STT-MRAM technology designed in a 2x nm CMOS-embedded 40 Mb array. Key features are full array functionality with low BER (bit error rate), process uniformity and reliability, 10 years data retention at 125C with extended endurance to ∼ 107 cycles. All achieved with standard BEOL process temperatures. Data retention post 260°C solder reflow temperature cycle is demonstrated.

Abstract

Extinction coefficients are fundamental for analyzing radiative transport in micro/nano particle suspensions. In the traditional transmission method for measuring the extinction coefficient of particles in a cuvette, a reference system is used to compensate for the influence of the cuvette and base fluid. However, the multiple reflections and refractions between the air-glass and liquid-glass interfaces cannot be sufficiently eliminated by using the reference system, and the induced measurement error increases significantly with increasing difference in refractive index between the two neighboring media at these interfaces. In this paper, an improved transmission method is proposed to measure the extinction coefficient of micro/nano particles. The extinction coefficient of the particles is determined based on an optical model, taking into account the multiple reflection and refraction at the glass-liquid interfaces. An experimental validation was conducted for suspensions with various mean particle sizes. By considering the higher-order transmission terms, the improved transmission method generally achieved high-accuracy improvement over the traditional transmission method for extinction coefficient measurement, especially for the case with a small optical thickness of particle suspensions. This work provides an alternative and more accurate way for measuring the extinction characteristics of micro/nano particle suspensions.

Abstract

In this paper, a new structure of power electronic package is addressed. The package structure has high process integration including package assembly and substrate process. Hence, good capability for heterogeneous process integration is very important. To apply the new structure on power SiP module, an integration design of power SiP module that involved an embedded low-side MOS (LMOS), an embedded high-side MOS (HMOS), and an embedded CMOS controller is demonstrated. The performance of thermal dissipation and power efficiency is better than using power QFN (PQFN) solution. For overall package size, the new structure is also smaller than conventional power package such as PQFN.

Abstract

As durations of manned space missions increase, it is imperative to understand the long-term consequence of microbial exposure on human health in a closed human habitat. To date, studies aimed at bacterial and fungal contamination of space vessels have highlighted species compositions biased toward hardy, persistent organisms capable of withstanding harsh conditions. In the current study, we assessed traits of two independent Aspergillus fumigatus strains isolated from the International Space Station. Ubiquitously found in terrestrial soil and atmospheric environments, A. fumigatus is a significant opportunistic fungal threat to human health, particularly among the immunocompromised. Using two well-known clinical isolates of A. fumigatus as comparators, we found that both ISS isolates exhibited normal in vitro growth and chemical stress tolerance yet caused higher lethality in a vertebrate model of invasive disease. These findings substantiate the need for additional studies of physical traits and biological activities of microbes adapted to microgravity and other extreme extraterrestrial conditions., One mission of the Microbial Observatory Experiments on the International Space Station (ISS) is to examine the traits and diversity of fungal isolates to gain a better understanding of how fungi may adapt to microgravity environments and how this may affect interactions with humans in a closed habitat. Here, we report an initial characterization of two isolates, ISSFT-021 and IF1SW-F4, of Aspergillus fumigatus collected from the ISS and a comparison to the experimentally established clinical isolates Af293 and CEA10. Whole-genome sequencing of ISSFT-021 and IF1SW-F4 showed 54,960 and 52,129 single nucleotide polymorphisms, respectively, compared to Af293, which is consistent with observed genetic heterogeneity among sequenced A. fumigatus isolates from diverse clinical and environmental sources. Assessment of in vitro growth characteristics, secondary metabolite production, and susceptibility to chemical stresses revealed no outstanding differences between ISS and clinical strains that would suggest special adaptation to life aboard the ISS. Virulence assessment in a neutrophil-deficient larval zebrafish model of invasive aspergillosis revealed that both ISSFT-021 and IF1SW-F4 were significantly more lethal than Af293 and CEA10. Taken together, these genomic, in vitro, and in vivo analyses of two A. fumigatus strains isolated from the ISS provide a benchmark for future investigations of these strains and for continuing research on specific microbial isolates from manned space environments. IMPORTANCE As durations of manned space missions increase, it is imperative to understand the long-term consequence of microbial exposure on human health in a closed human habitat. To date, studies aimed at bacterial and fungal contamination of space vessels have highlighted species compositions biased toward hardy, persistent organisms capable of withstanding harsh conditions. In the current study, we assessed traits of two independent Aspergillus fumigatus strains isolated from the International Space Station. Ubiquitously found in terrestrial soil and atmospheric environments, A. fumigatus is a significant opportunistic fungal threat to human health, particularly among the immunocompromised. Using two well-known clinical isolates of A. fumigatus as comparators, we found that both ISS isolates exhibited normal in vitro growth and chemical stress tolerance yet caused higher lethality in a vertebrate model of invasive disease. These findings substantiate the need for additional studies of physical traits and biological activities of microbes adapted to microgravity and other extreme extraterrestrial conditions.

Abstract

Two schemes using the exploiting modification direction (EMD) method to obtain good stego image quality and increase embedding capacity were respectfully introduced by Zhang and Wang and Lee et al. This study proposes a data-hiding scheme based on an improved EMD method. According to experimental results, the proposed scheme retains high embedding capacity and good stego image quality.

Abstract

We have developed a self-assembled CMOS compatible scheme for the generation of Ge QDs through thermal oxidation of Si1-xGex patterned structures as well as demonstrated precise QD placement by guiding Ge nucleus migration along the oxidation path and thus arranging them onto targeted locations where the ultimate oxidation occurs. Thereby a single QD self-aligned with electrodes through nanoscale tunnel barriers of SiO2/Si3N4 is realized for an effective management of single electron tunneling. On the other hand, using the fidelity of lithographic patterning and selective oxidation of SiGe pillars well-organized 3D stacked Ge QDs are precisely placed vertically and laterally, and the stacking number is managed by conditions of etching and layer deposition. Stacked QDs luminescence tunable over the visible and possess low thermal conductivity, showing promise for nanophotonic and energy conversion devices.

Abstract

The GaMnN and GaMnN: O films were obtained by annealing at different NH3 flow rates. When the NH3 flow rate was decreased to 20 sccm, the oxygen was co-doped into GaMnN film and substituted the few host atoms, which were confirmed by the X-ray Photoelectron Spectra. Moreover, the oxygen co-doping in GaMnN film drastically enhanced the gain of the ferromagnetic (FM) state but oxygen as shallow donor in GaN offers little carriers. Hence, the enhanced FM state is not due to increase of carrier concentration. On optical properties, the oxygen co-doping in GaMnN film will suppress the blue luminescence centered near 2.8 eV and make a blue shift of the photoluminescence spectra. Abstract

SUMMARY The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of dried Echinacea purpurea L. (EP) on the growth performance and antioxidant activity of broiler chickens. Five hundred 1-d-old broilers (Arbor Acres) were evenly divided by sex and randomly allocated into 5 groups: a control group (corn-soybean meal diet) and groups receiving 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, or 2.0% dried EP. The treatments had no significant effects on BW gain during the starter and grower periods (P > 0.05). However, in the grower period, the feed:gain of broilers in the dried EP-supplemented groups was significantly improved compared with that of the control group. Moreover, the feed:gain of the 1.0% EP group was significantly decreased over the feed:gain of the control group in the starter period and over the entire experimental period. The Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity, catalase, and superoxide dismutase contents of the serum, liver, and spleen of 35-d-old broilers in the 0.5 to 2.0% EP groups were significantly higher than those of broilers in the other groups. Ammonia N concentration was not significantly different among treatments in the jejunum-ileum and ceca. In conclusion, dried EP powder can be used as a feed additive to improve the feed conversion and antioxidant activity of broilers. The recommended dosage of dried EP powder in the diets of broilers is 0.5 to 1.0%.

Abstract

For future magnetic recording, one challenge is that the shield to shield spacing (SSS) of readers cannot be scaled down to achieve the linear density requirement. A differential dual spin valve (DDSV) has been proposed to improve the linear resolution as it does not rely on the magnetic shields to diminish the interference from adjacent bits. The side reading becomes more and more challenging as the track width shrinks to below SSS to accommodate high track density, in particular for a DDSV reader in which no magnetic shield or larger SSS is used. A self-biased DDSV structure is proposed to replace the conventional abutted junction stabilization scheme. In the self-biased DDSV readers, two side shields are put at the both sides of the sensor across the track direction in the replacement of the hard bias (HB). The stray fields from the two free layers in the DDSV sensor bias each other to stabilize the domain structure of the free layers. Preliminary analysis shows that the self-bias DDSV is also robust against the spin torque-induced magnetic instability. Simulation results indicate that the self-biased DDSV reader has much better reading sensitivity for the opposing fields generated by magnetic transitions than HB-stabilized sensor. It is found that for DDSV readers, the mag-noise is less significant due to a larger signal field and thicker free layer. Current perpendicular to the plane (CPP)-DDSV sensors have been fabricated and show very good differential effect in the real operating mode. The magnetoresistance performance of individual spin valve in CPP-DDSV sensors has been obtained through measurements with applied field and pinning field parallel to the easy axis of the free layer.

Abstract

Objectives Recipients after liver transplantation. (OLT) often experience renal dysfunction. Acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) after OLT occur among 20% to 50% and 30% to 90% of recipients, respectively; 2% to 5% of them deteriorate into end-stage renal disease each year. Since the predictable factors for CKD have not been well identified. We sought to investigate the incidence and predictors of CKD at 5 years after OLT. Patients and methods Between August 2002 and December 2005, we enrolled 77 patients who underwent adult living donor OLT with over 2 years of follow-up. The strategies to prevent renal dysfunction included induction with basiliximab to delay the use of tacrolimus: addition of mycophenolate mofetil to reduce the tacrolimus dosage; avoidance of the calcineurin inhibitor using sirolimus or administration of an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. The clinical variables were reviewed for analysis. Results The mean follow-up was 76 ± 14 months. The incidence of AKI (over 50% increase level of creatinine) was 29%. Ten (13.0%) patients developed CKD (creatinine > 2 mg/dL). One (1.3%) subject developed end-stage renal disease requiring hemodialysis. Upon multivariate analysis the development of CKD was significantly associated with the posttransplant 4-week creatinine level: 0.92 ± 0.23 versus 1.37 ± 0.93 mg/dL ( P = .008). Conclusion The 4-week creatinine value was predictive of the occurence of CKD over 5 years after OLT.
