Abstract

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate how digital platforms capability, improvisational capability and organizational readiness directly affect innovation performance. This study also explores how organizational readiness acts as mediator.Design/methodology/approachThis empirical study is based on quantitative research design. Data were collected from 647 managers of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) working in Pakistan. Correlations and regression techniques were used for analyses. The Preacher and Hayes technique, the Sobel test and Bootstrap techniques were used to test mediation effect.FindingsThe results reveal a significant and positive relationship of digital platforms capability, improvisational capability and organizational readiness with innovation performance. Organizational readiness fully mediates the relationships between digital platforms capability and innovation performance link as well as between improvisational capability and innovation performance link.Originality/valueIn the age of digital economy the achievement of innovation performance is very important for SMEs. Businesses are shifting from traditional operational activities to digitalization. This study is imperative to offer new realm of modern technologies by exploring the role of digital platform capability, improvisational capability and organizational readiness for achieving innovation performance in digital economy.

Abstract

PurposeThis research aims to concentrate on the important concern that how social capital (SC) influences business model innovation (BMI) in the course of the mediating role of organizational learning capabilities (OLC) and the moderating role of entrepreneurial orientation (EO). In the context of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), this study empirically tested a theoretical model of BMI to advocate a mechanism for the analysis of its significant determinants.Design/methodology/approachIn order to achieve the objective of the research, survey method was utilized, and data were collected from 521 CEOs, MDs and the owners of ICT sector SMEs. Correlation, causal step approach and regression analysis were used to test the proposed model.FindingsFinding of the research advocates that OLC mediate the relationship between SC and BMI. In addition, stronger EO augments the association between OLC and BMI.Practical implicationsThe study adds to the literature by providing insights regarding the impact of SC, OLC and EO on BMI of small firms.Originality/valueThis research enriches the existing knowledge by testing a mediating role of OLC between SC-BMI link and, therefore, makes an important addition to the existing knowledge in the context of SMEs by concentrating on the relationship between SC, OLC, BMI and EO.

Abstract

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to develop a model of “electronic social entrepreneurship” by integrating social entrepreneurship and information and communication technology to enhance social enterprise effectiveness. Social enterprise has recently emerged as a contemporary form of enterprise to achieve sustainable social order. Thus, besides building economic value, a primary goal of these enterprises is to create superior social value. Although, a considerable number of studies exist on social enterprise, the literature is still lacking in the discussion on electronic social entrepreneurship.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopted inductive qualitative approach in which in-depth, semistructured interviews were conducted from 32 owners/managers/CEOs of registered social enterprises.FindingsThe analysis of interviews by qualified researchers resulted in the identification of four key themes. These themes included information and communication technology, information and communication technology–based innovation, environmental complexity and social value creation. Frequencies of all the identified themes were calculated, and based on these themes, literature review was conducted to find out the relationships between these themes and to introduce a model of electronic social entrepreneurship.Practical implicationsThe model developed could be used by social enterprises for achieving higher social and economic returns.Originality/valueBased on interviews and literature review, a unique model for electronic social entrepreneurship is developed.

Abstract

Background: The combination of cyclin dependent 4/6 kinase inhibitors (CDK4/6i) with endocrine therapy (ET) has resulted in clinically significant improvements in progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in hormone-receptor (HR)-positive metastatic breast cancer (MBC). However, most patients’ disease ultimately progresses on CDK4/6i and ET. Therefore, further research is necessary to understand the mechanisms driving primary and secondary resistance. PROMISE is a multicenter prospective cohort study enrolling women with HR-positive MBC commencing treatment with palbociclib + letrozole (1st line) or palbociclib + fulvestrant (2nd Line). The study provides a comprehensive “omic” assessment of blood, tumor, urine and the fecal microbiome to identify molecular or cellular features associated with primary endocrine resistance (e.g. disease progression ≤ 12 months on treatment) and acquired resistance to CDK 4/6i. Additionally, patient derived xenografts and organoids are created to test new drug strategies designed to overcome resistance to CDK 4/6i and ET. Here, we present initial sequencing results from pretreatment biospecimens collected from PROMISE study participants. Methods: On-study tumor biopsies and blood samples were collected for DNA/RNA sequencing (TempusTM). The analyzed biospecimens were all obtained prior to initiation of palbociclib and ET. We correlated patient clinical characteristics (phenotypes) with molecular data and responses to protocol treatment. The data were analyzed using a series of cutting-edge bioinformatics pipelines for somatic and germline mutations in addition to copy number alterations (CNAs). The study database was locked for analysis on 06/20/2019. Results: We analyzed the somatic single nucleotide variants/INDELs (sSNV/INDEL) profiles across the tumor samples to determine the genes that were least likely to occur as a result of background mutation processes. Twenty-six patients had somatic copy number alterations (sCNA) and/or sSNV/INDEL in at least one of 18 genes with the most significant sSNV/INDEL profiles (p < 0.03) which included clinically and biologically relevant genes. The genes with the most statistically significant sSNV/INDEL mutation profiles were GATA3, PIK3CA, CDH1, and ESR1 (p < 0.0009). We observed a high percentage of tumors with somatic alterations in GATA3 (23% sSNV/INDEL, 15% sCNA), PIK3CA (38%, 12%), CDH1 (19%, 50%) and ESR1 (19%, 58%). ESR1 mutations were more frequent in patients receiving 2nd line treatment. Other frequently altered genes included TP53 (15%, 46%), MAP2K4 (8%, 50%), DNAAF1 (8%, 50%), and CDKN1B (8%, 35%). Further, ZNF317 and F3 were altered in 9 and 7 patients, respectively. Twenty-four samples had alterations in at least one of the CDK4/6 pathway genes (RB1, CCNE2, CCND1, CDK6, ESR1, CDKN2A, CCND3, CDK4, CDK2 and CCNE1). Four patients progressed on therapy; three of the four patients had mutations in PIK3CA, and one had a mutation in ESR1. Results of the RNA sequencing data (N=26) will be presented at the SABCS meeting. Conclusions: This is the first report of a prospective study designed to characterize the genomic landscape of ER+/HER2- MBC prior to palbociclib treatment. We observed high frequencies of known targetable alterations in PIK3CA and ESR1, including in patients that progress, which is consistent with previous reports. Abstract

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the ways in which strategic orientation (SO) and strategic renewal (SR) could create the possibility for improving strategic performance (SP). The indirect effect of SO was also tested in this study. Furthermore, by using the moderated mediation model, the authors also investigated the moderating role of organizational ambidexterity (OA). Design/methodology/approach The results of this cross-sectional study are based on a survey conducted on 1,430 owner/managers of SMEs. To analyze the relationship among variables, this study used descriptive, correlation and hierarchical multiple regression approach. Findings Results revealed that SO positively affects SR and SP in SMEs. Furthermore, the mediating role of SR between the relationships of SO and SP was also confirmed. Moreover, OA strengthens the connection between SO, SR and SP. Practical implications The current study provides new insights for strategic planning and management by focusing on SO along with its different dimensions. Therefore, it provides new guidelines and a roadmap that would be helpful in achieving the objectives of SP. Originality/value The study makes significant contributions to the extant literature by adding new knowledge about the positive impact of SO on SP. Moreover, with the analysis of mediating role of SR in this relationship, the study has made significant addition to the existing literature on SP. Furthermore, moderated mediation model adds value to the existing body of knowledge.

Abstract

Objectives With the introduction of novel immune therapeutics for the treatment of disseminated malignancies, we sought to evaluate whether deliberate sequencing of immunotherapy before/after conventional cytotoxic chemotherapy would have an impact on clinical outcomes in patients with previously treated metastatic melanoma. We sought to evaluate whether or not ipilimumab immunotherapy administered before or after cytotoxic chemotherapy (nab-paclitaxel+bevacizumab, AB) would impact clinical outcomes. Methods We conducted a randomized phase 2 clinical trial of patients with BRAF wild-type metastatic melanoma (up to 2 prior therapies) who received either: (A) AB followed by ipilimumab therapy at progression; or (B) ipilimumab followed by AB treatment at progression. The primary goal of the study was a comparison of AB versus ipilimumab progression-free survival, with secondary clinical and laboratory endpoints. Results This study did not reach full accrual due to concurrent Food and Drug Administration approval of anti-programmed cell death 1 agents. Nevertheless, the available data suggests a cumulative therapeutic advantage to the sequential use of ipilimumab followed by AB. Correlative laboratory data revealed a favorable effect on systemic immune homeostasis in patients receiving AB therapy, of potential interest in further investigations, especially in the context of chemotherapy/immunotherapy combinations. Conclusion Albeit limited in scope, our data suggest that cytotoxic therapy with nab-paclitaxel and bevacizumab appear to favorably alter systemic parameters of immune function of potential benefit in combination T-cell directed immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy.

Abstract

Purpose Social enterprises (SEs) have emerged as a tool to sustainable development. SEs create a social value along with an economic value. However, the aspect of SEs still missing from literature is the process of virtualization. The purpose of this paper is to introduce international social entrepreneurship as an emerging form of social entrepreneurship that is using information and communication technology (ICT)-enabled innovation and networking with international partners as virtual enterprise network, to create social and economic values across the borders. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, qualitative research paradigm is adopted to study the internationalization of SEs. To identify the drivers of internationalization, in-depth literature review was conducted. Articles from six databases and Google Scholar were searched to propose a comprehensive model for internationalization of SEs. Findings There is limited academic work on the use and impact of digital intervention (ICTs) on SEs and, especially, on the virtualization of SEs as there is no paper explaining virtualization of SEs. This paper proposes a model for the internationalization of SEs, named virtual social enterprise. Research limitations/implications The conceptual models and discussions on the virtualization of SEs are very limited in the extant literature. Very few articles could be found that studied the process of internationalization of SEs. Thus, the paper would have far-reaching implications for social enterprise theory and practice. Originality/value This is first study of its kind proposing a comprehensive theoretical model for internationalization of SEs. This model could be used by SEs for networking across international boundaries to control the flow of information and to market their products.

Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) security and privacy remain a major challenge, especially due to the highly scalable and distributed nature of IoT networks. IoT security has an exceptionally wide scope which also leads to the most demanding requirements needed for the widespread realization of many IoT visions. It includes the tasks such as trusted sensing, computation, communication, privacy in terms of security scope. A large number of industry-driven domain specific standards has been developed which hinder the development of a single IoT ecosystem. O-MI and O-DF standards were previously proposed to address the challenge of interoperability in IoT devices. This paper highlights and discusses the measures taken to enhance the security of these standards by integration of OAuth 2.0 service provider functionality with the O-MI authentication module along with the existing security module. The security architecture has been proposed which enhances the security features by providing authorization without use of certificates. The implementation details of the plug-in module for envisioned security model developed for the O-MI and O-DF standards have been discussed.

Abstract

Approximately 20-30% of patients with metastatic germ cell cancers (GCCs) can develop relapsed or refractory (RR) disease, about 40-50% of patients who relapse after salvage chemotherapy may reach long-term remission. The goal of this review was to identify patients who appear to benefit from high-dose chemotherapy (HDCT) and autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT). To access this, we performed a systematic medical literature review to evaluate the effectiveness of HDCT in the frontline setting, as well as in patients with RR testicular cancer. We searched databases for interventional clinical studies and identified 5883 studies. We selected 49 studies for inclusion, which included a total of 5985 patients. Seventeen studies reported results of newly diagnosed poor-risk GCC patients and 32 studies reported results of RR patients. For newly diagnosed patients with poor prognostic predictors, a risk adjusted strategy using unfavorable tumor marker decline with initial standard chemotherapy regimen and upfront HDCT demonstrated improved outcomes. Our data suggest a minimum of two HDCT cycles with ASCT should be standard of care for patients with RR GCC. Failure of HDCT results in a poor prognosis with only 10% of patients achieving lasting remission with salvage therapy.

Abstract

Objectives: To determine the etiology and level of spine trauma in patientspresenting in tertiary care hospital of Pakistan. Study Design: Descriptive, cross-sectional study.Setting: This study was conducted at the Department of Neurosurgery, Pakistan Institute ofMedical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad, from September 20th, 2014 to March 20th, 2015. Subjects:The patients in the study were of both genders, between 15 to 80 years of age (N=315, meanage 38.17 years, SD 17.31). Materials and Methods: All 315patientsbetween 15 to 80 yearsof age with spine trauma presenting to the Neurosurgery department of PIMS, Islamabadconsented to participate in the study. All these patients had underwent thorough history andphysical examination after stabilization and initial emergency management. X-ray spine wascarefully reviewed and patient details, bio-data, etiology of trauma, spinal injury type, level,neurological status and diagnosis were recorded. Results: The most frequently affected agegroup presenting with spine trauma were young and between 15 to 30 years of age (17.1%).The most frequent etiologies seen for spine injury were falls; 158 (50.2%) followed by RTA’s;129 (41%). The most common level of spine trauma presentation was at the lumbar spine;142 (45.1%) followed by thoracic spine fractures; 80 (25.4%). Conclusion: Lumbar spine andyounger male people are more prone to spinal injuries in Pakistan. The most frequent reasonfor the trauma was due to falls followed by road traffic accidents.

Abstract

openaire: EC/H2020/688203/EU//BIoTope Internet of Things (IoT) is a computing infrastructure underlying powerful systems and applications, enabling autonomous interconnection of people, vehicles, devices, and information systems. Many IoT sectors such as smart grid or smart mobility will benefit from the recent evolutions of the smart city initiatives for building more advanced IoT services, from the collection of human- and machine-generated data to their storage and analysis. It is therefore of utmost importance to manage the volume, velocity, and variety of the data, in particular at the IoT gateways level, where data are published and consumed. This paper proposes an access time improvement framework to optimize the publication and consumption steps, the storage and retrieval of data at the gateways level to be more precise. This new distributed framework relies on a consistent hashing mechanism and modular characteristics of microservices to ensure a flexible and scalable solution. Applied and assessed on a real case study, experimental results show how the proposed framework improves data access time for standardized IoT gateways.

Abstract

Simple Summary Metastatic Uveal Melanoma (MUM) is a lethal malignancy with no durable treatment available to date. A vast majority of patients with MUM present with liver metastasis. The liver harbors metastatic disease with an apparent lack of a cytotoxic T cell response. It is becoming evident that MUM is not an immunologically silent malignancy and the investigation of non-T cell anti-tumor immunity is warranted. In this review, we highlight the relevance of Natural Killer (NK) cells in the biology and treatment of MUM. Potent anti-NK cell immunosuppression employed by uveal melanoma alludes to its vulnerability to NK cell cytotoxicity. On the contrary, micro-metastasis in the liver survive for several years within close vicinity of a plethora of circulating and liver-resident NK cells. This review provides unique perspectives into the potential role of NK cells in control or progression of uveal melanoma. Abstract Uveal melanoma has a high mortality rate following metastasis to the liver. Despite advances in systemic immune therapy, treatment of metastatic uveal melanoma (MUM) has failed to achieve long term durable responses. Barriers to success with immune therapy include the immune regulatory nature of uveal melanoma as well as the immune tolerant environment of the liver. To adequately harness the anti-tumor potential of the immune system, non-T cell-based approaches need to be explored. Natural Killer (NK) cells possess potent ability to target tumor cells via innate and adaptive responses. In this review, we discuss evidence that highlights the role of NK cell surveillance and targeting of uveal melanoma. We also discuss the repertoire of intra-hepatic NK cells. The human liver has a vast and diverse lymphoid population and NK cells comprise 50% of the hepatic lymphocytes. Hepatic NK cells share a common niche with uveal melanoma micro-metastasis within the liver sinusoids. It is, therefore, crucial to understand and investigate the role of intra-hepatic NK cells in the control or progression of MUM.

Abstract

Targeted therapy and immunotherapy have revolutionized the treatment of advanced melanoma. Despite recent advances, lack of long-term efficacy from targeted therapy and serious immune-related toxicity are major concerns. There is unmet need for ‘durable’ and ‘safe’ treatment options for advanced melanoma. Cancer vaccine therapy in melanoma has been investigated for many years with modest clinical efficacy. More recently, dendritic cell-based vaccine products have become available for clinical use and have been the focus of investigation. CLBS20 (NBS20/eltrapuldencel-T) is a novel dendritic cell-based vaccine product that has shown promising results in early phase trials in advanced melanoma. This cancer vaccine approach could play an important role in providing a sustainable survival benefit, targeting cancer cells themselves and avoiding off-target immune-related toxicity.

14. Patterns of hepato-pulmonary metastasis and their impact on clinical outcomes in uveal melanoma

Abstract

e22052 Background: Metastatic Uveal Melanoma (MUM) is a rare tumor with poor prognosis following development of liver metastasis. We hypothesized that patterns of metastasis in Uveal Melanoma correlate with clinical outcomes. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed patients with MUM at Mayo Clinic, Rochester from January 1999 to August 2019. Patients were stratified into two groups based on the pattern of hepatic and pulmonary metastasis at the time of diagnosis of metastatic disease: Group 1 (≤5 liver metastasis or lung metastasis) and Group 2 ( > 5 liver metastasis without lung metastasis). Baseline characteristics were compared between both groups. Survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan Meier method. Univariate and multivariate analysis were performed for Overall Survival (OS). Results: 147 patients were included in the study (n = 67 Group 1; n = 80 Group 2). In Group 1, 49/67 patients presented with ≤5 liver metastasis and 18/67 had lung metastasis without liver metastasis. Median OS for Group 1 was significantly longer than Group 2 (38 vs. 15 months; p < 0.0001) (Table). On univariate analysis, predictors for OS were: Pattern of Metastasis, ECOG PS > 0, Time to metastasis > 60 months, and Surgical metastatectomy. Pattern of Metastasis was an independent predictor for OS in a multivariate model that included these predictors (p = 0.0004). Group 1 patients were more likely to undergo surgical metastatectomy compared to group 2 (21.5% vs. 1.3%; p < 0.0001). Interestingly, the median time to metastasis from diagnosis of UM was significantly longer for Group 1 as compared to Group 2 (67 vs. 24.5 months; p < 0.0001). Conclusions: Limited (≤5) liver metastasis or lung metastasis (without liver metastasis) at diagnosis predict favorable clinical outcomes in MUM. The occurrence of such metastasis following a significantly longer time from primary diagnosis suggests the existence of a distinct sub-type of metastatic disease with relatively indolent behavior. Abstract

Background: cancellation of planned surgery impacts substantially on patients and health systems. This study describes the incidence and reasons for cancellation of inpatient surgery in the UK NHS. Methods: we conducted a prospective observational cohort study over 7 consecutive days in March 2017 in 245 NHS hospitals. Occurrences and reasons for previous surgical cancellations were recorded. Using multilevel logistic regression, we identified patient- and hospital-level factors associated with cancellation due to inadequate bed capacity. Results: we analysed data from 14 936 patients undergoing planned surgery. A total of 1499 patients (10.0%) reported previous cancellation for the same procedure; contemporaneous hospital census data indicated that 13.9% patients attending inpatient operations were cancelled on the day of surgery. Non-clinical reasons, predominantly inadequate bed capacity, accounted for a large proportion of previous cancellations. Independent risk factors for cancellation due to inadequate bed capacity included requirement for postoperative critical care [odds ratio (OR)=2.92; 95% confidence interval (CI), 2.12–4.02; PConclusions: a significant proportion of patients presenting for surgery have experienced a previous cancellation for the same procedure. Cancer surgery is relatively protected, but bed capacity, including postoperative critical care requirements, are significant risk factors for previous cancellations.

Abstract

Internet of Things (IoT), the emerging computing infrastructure that refers to the networked interconnection of physical objects, incorporates a plethora of digital systems that are being developed by means of a large number of applications. Many of these applications administer data collection on the edge and offer data storage and analytics capabilities in the cloud. This raises the following problems: (i) the processing stages in IoT applications need to have separate implementations for both the edge and the cloud, (ii) the placement of computation is inflexible with separate software stacks, as the optimal deployment decisions need to be made at runtime, and (iii) unified fault tolerance is essential in case of intermittent long-distance network connectivity problems, malicious harming of edge devices, or harsh environments. This paper proposes a novel fault-tolerant architecture CEFIoT for IoT applications by adopting state-of-the-art cloud technologies and deploying them also for edge computing. We solve the data fault tolerance issue by exploiting the Apache Kafka publish/subscribe platform as the unified high-performance data replication solution offering a common software stack for both the edge and the cloud. We also deploy Kubernetes for fault-tolerant management and the advanced functionality allowing on-the-fly automatic reconfiguration of the processing pipeline to handle both hardware and network connectivity based failures., 6 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

There is a great saying; “Necessity is the mother of invention” the sole purpose of writing this paper is to take a step forward for the development of the electrical industry in Pakistan. This paper describes the proto-type mobile robot, which is capable of walking on the overhead transmission lines in the live environment. Its ultimate purpose is to inspect the transmission lines through cameras and send the data to the ground. The robot consists of two motors, four wheels, sensors, cameras etc. This robot can cross the clamps on the lines. An embedded computer based on Raspberry Pi3 is chosen as a core of the control system. IP Cameras are installed to obtain the video of the wires and communication system is based on wireless IP control router. The sensor configuration is used to sense any obstacle in shape of clamps. GPS system is mounted on the robot which provides the current location of the Robot.

Aim: To compare PD-L1 expression between metastatic uveal melanoma (MUM) and metastatic cutaneous melanoma (MCM). Materials & methods: A total of 295 MCM and 78 MUM specimens were analyzed for tumor cell PD-L1 expression. Abstract

openaire: EC/H2020/688203/EU//BIoTope The number of Internet of Things (IoT) vendors is rapidly growing, providing solutions for all levels of the IoT stack. Despite the universal agreement on the need for a standardized technology stack, following the model of the world-wide-web, a large number of industry-driven domain specific standards hinder the development of a single IoT ecosystem. An attempt to solve this challenge is the introduction of O-MI (Open Messaging Interface) and O-DF (Open Data Format), two domain independent standards published by Open Group. Despite their good compatibility, they define no specific security model. This paper takes the first step of defining a security model for these standards by proposing suitable access control and authentication mechanisms that can regulate the rights of different principles and operations defined in these standards. First, a brief introduction is provided of the O-MI and O-DF standards, including a comparison with existing standards. Second, the envisioned security model is presented, together with the implementation details of the plug-in module developed for the O-MI and O-DF reference implementation.

Abstract

Hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is a rare, indolent B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder that accounts for 2% of all cases of leukemia. Most patients present with pancytopenia and splenomegaly with variable number of ‘hairy’ lymphocytes in blood. BRAF V600E mutation can be detected in virtually 100% of HCL cases and is absent in other B-cell lymphomas. The mutated gene and its responding abnormal protein can be used as specific markers in the diagnosis of HCL. New therapeutic modalities targeting on mutated BRAF and its downstream pathways have shown encouraging results in clinical trials. The objective of this review article is to discuss the recent developments in the diagnosis and management of hairy cell leukemia.

Abstract

Hemophagocytic syndrome (HPS) or hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) arises in the setting of a highly stimulated but ineffective immune response. There is significant overlap between the presentations of HPS and lymphoma and there is still little knowledge and attention among caregivers for this life-threatening syndrome. The current case is a valuable reminder about the possibility of secondary HLH (malignancy-associated in this particular case) as a cause of prolonged unexplained fever. While diagnostic criteria for lymphoma-specific HPS have been previously suggested, their applicability is limited since the HLH 2004 criteria are used to diagnose all cases of HPS. This case shows the importance of accurate interpretation of laboratory and pathological data for the diagnosis of lymphoma-related HPS. HPS in the setting of B-cell lymphoma carries a poor prognosis. Early recognition and prompt treatment offers the best chance of survival, especially in the setting of multi-organ failure. In today's business world, workspace design is one of the most critical factors for employee's productivity. Today's workplace is different, diverse and constantly changing. Issues related to the workspace design are significantly neglected in Pakistan. This is also affecting the employees' performances and results in delay in work completion, personal growth and promotes frustration, etc. The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of workspace design, i.e., furniture, noise, comfort and spatial arrangement on employees' productivity and to examine the relationship between efficiency and surroundings space design of the employees. The study was conducted from an employees-based view to investigate the effect of workspace design and how employees perceive its effect on their performance? Primary data was collected using standardised questionnaire from employees of three public sector universities in Hazara Division, Pakistan. Results demonstrated that employees believe that effective workspace design will enhance their productivity.

Abstract

There are different ways products are priced. Prices of some products are fixed and some are negotiable. This paper compares the effect of fixed pricing and negotiable pricing on purchase decision. The paper also compares the effect of different demographic variables on fixed and negotiable price. The results of our empirical study, conducted on locally manufactured apparels, reveal that people evaluate fixed prices more favourably as compared to negotiable price. Furthermore, it was found that demographic variables affect negotiable price, and people with different levels of education and income had differences of opinion in evaluating negotiable price. However, the majority of respondents were in favour of non-negotiable/fixed price. Hence, it could be concluded from the results that if organisations shift from negotiable price to fixed price, the inclination of customers towards their products increases. The sellers of locally manufactured apparels in particular and fast moving consumer goods in general can significantly improve their sales volume by shifting to non-negotiable/fixed price policy.

Abstract

With the evolution of vehicular networks, the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) has emerged as a promising technology for autonomous road transport. For a successful deployment of ITS, security and reliability are the most challenging factors to be tackled to ensure Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Infrastructure-to-Infrastructure (I2I) communications. Due to unreliable communications in vehicular networks, implementing fault-tolerant techniques for the Road Side Unit (RSU) infrastructure is an imperial need. Within this context, the contributions of this paper are twofold: (i) we propose a distributed fault-tolerant framework for V2I and I2I communications based on edge computing to resolve hardware- and network connectivity-based failures. The fault tolerance issue is addressed by employing open messaging standards as a subscription-based data replication solution at the edge. We also adopt Kubernetes for the fault-tolerant management, combined with high-availability mechanism, allowing automatic reconfiguration of the data processing pipeline; and (ii) we implement a demonstrator system for vehicular networks-based smart mobility to assess fault tolerance capabilities. The experimental results show that our proposed framework dynamically tolerates RSU-related failures during the vehicular communication phase.
